In this conversation, Dan Johnson and Bronson Strickland discuss various aspects of deer research, including the impact of moon phases on deer movement, the transition of roles within the Deer Lab, and the funding sources for wildlife research. They delve into the complexities of scientific studies, particularly a comprehensive analysis of moon phases and their effects on deer behavior, ultimately concluding that moon phases do not significantly impact deer movement. The discussion also touches on the importance of curiosity in research and the need for hunters to rely on scientific evidence rather than conventional wisdom. In this conversation, Bronson Strickland and Dan Johnson delve into the psychological and environmental factors affecting deer movement, particularly focusing on the placebo effect, the impact of weather, and the significance of cold fronts during hunting seasons. They explore how beliefs and perceptions can influence behavior, the complexities of weather patterns, and the nuances of deer activity in relation to temperature changes. The discussion highlights the importance of scientific research in understanding animal behavior and offers insights for hunters looking to optimize their strategies based on environmental conditions.

On this episode of Michigan Wild Nate finds himself recapping his time at ATA and the most recent rabbit hunt. This was the first Archery Trade Association Nate ever attended and he really enjoyed it. Seeing all the companies and the people behind them was a refreshing experience. Nate also was able to see and feel some new products for 2025.

This weekend was the first serious rabbit hunt for Nate this winter. The dogs did fantastic and gunpowder was burned. Nate was able to reflect on his enjoyment chasing rabbits and the time spent with close friends throughout the hunt. Even though whitetail season isn't done for Nate, the majority of his focus is on small game hunting and scouting for the upcoming season. There will be opportunities to punch a few more tags in the upcoming weeks, but those will be very calculated if a target buck shows up.

In a recent episode of the "We Do This Too Outdoors" podcast, host Courtney Williamson welcomed Sharenda Birts, a passionate advocate for women in the outdoors. Birts shared her inspiring journey, which began with personal health challenges that ultimately led her to discover the joys of outdoor activities. After facing food allergies and undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer, she found herself seeking new experiences that would allow her to reconnect with nature. Her first hunting experience came through a pheasant hunt organized by Pheasants Forever, which not only marked a significant milestone in her life but also sparked a deep passion for exploring the outdoors. Birts emphasized the importance of curiosity and self-entertainment, noting how her upbringing as an only child helped her develop a love for solitary adventures.

The conversation also delved into the challenges women face in the outdoor community, particularly regarding representation and inclusivity. Birts, who co-founded Wildherness.org, highlighted the need for safe spaces where women can engage in outdoor activities without feeling intimidated. She acknowledged that many women, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, often feel discouraged from participating in hunting and other outdoor pursuits due to societal pressures and stereotypes. By creating a supportive network, Birts aims to empower women to embrace their love for the outdoors and to foster a sense of belonging within the community. Her organization focuses on mentorship and connection, ensuring that women have access to resources and guidance as they navigate their outdoor journeys.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch is joined by good friend Aaron Hepler to reminisce on this past year's hunting season.  If you've followed along to the show this season, you know that life has gotten busy and Mitch took a while to get into deer hunting mode.  Fortunately for him, he was not alone, as Aaron didn't jump on the deer hunting bandwagon too quickly either this season.  For the last 15+ years, both of these guys have been diehard deer hunters, especially when it comes to bowhunting.  Turns out, there are other fun things to do too!

Aaron discusses his new journey training a Brittany pup to be a bird dog.  A lot more effort went into working with his dog preseason and in season, then running cameras and scouting deer.  Aaron seems to think this hunting season was as fun as any he has had in the past.  And for the record, he still had an awesome deer season punching both buck and doe tags in PA!  We recount his deer hunting experiences and what he looks forward to doing more of in the future.  Thanks for listening, and remember to do what you love and not for likes!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, it's story time as Mitch recounts the events of opening week of rifle season at camp.  Each season during rifle season, he along with family and friends join together for some old fashioned deer drives in the big woods of northern PA.  The events throughout this week led to exactly what you read in the title, a hematoma on Mitch's leg, how he lost his cell phone during a drive, and the events leading to recovering a 130" mountain buck.

During the course of this three day hunt, Mitch's leg injury worsened from a fall he had opening weekend.  But being the blockhead he is, continued to push on hunting!  Organizing drives with a group can be somewhat challenging to effectively communicate with a group.  However, this social event is a fun change in pace to the solo venture of buck hunting all season.  Sometimes things do not always work out as you plan.  Drives get messed up, shot opportunities get missed, and sometimes story endings don't follow the Hollywood script.  However, the journey over this three day hunt turned out to be one for the memory books!

On this week's episode Mitch is gearing up for Pennsylvania's late season deer hunting with his flintlock muzzleloader.  This unique weapon has a 3+week long season for deer each year that creates a fun opportunity to fill a tag.  Over the past few years, Mitch has become slightly more serious in his shooting and preparation to fill a tag with the ol' smoke pole.  This was not always the case, in fact, plenty of animals have been scared by his inaccurate shooting in the past.  This forced a change to buckle down and learn how to become more accurate with quality practice.

Mitch shares his experiences shooting after purchasing a book about black powder rifle accuracy.  He shares the process he installed into his routine for load development and practice to help alleviate flinching, and build a handload with the right powder charge and patch thickness.  There are a few other tricks he has picked up that have helped his success along the way.  If you're an experienced flintlock shooter, this may not be your episode.  However, if you're the fella that didn't fill a deer tag and is deciding to dust off the flintlock after a few years of not being engaged, this may help you get ready!
