In this very first Inside the NDA episode, Jeremy sits down with Lindsay Thomas Jr., Chief Communications Officer for the National Deer Association, for an eye-opening discussion on how deer see, smell, and survive in the wild. Lindsay breaks down fascinating insights into deer vision—how their broader peripheral view, ability to see in low light, and rapid information processing give them a huge advantage over hunters. Beyond the science, this episode highlights why the NDA’s mission matters now more than ever. Jeremy and Lindsay discuss deer behavior patterns, how hunters can prepare both physically and mentally for success, and the importance of practicing in the same gear you’ll hunt in. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by Matt Beisswanger for a traditional bowhunting conversation.  Matt is a team member of Inside Twenty whose focus is sharing traditional bowhunting and their faith in Christ.  Matt has been toting the stickbow since 2006 on and off and has wrapped a tag around numerous critters including some magnificent whitetail bucks.  He's learned a lot when it comes to transitioning from hunting with a compound.

The closer you need to get to your quarry, the more you need to learn about them in order to be successful.  For those who have hunted with a crossbow or a compound, you'd think switching to a traditional bow would be as simple as changing equipment and hunting the same as with your modern bow.  That has not been Matt's experience.  In fact, Matt shares with us how he manipulates stand locations to cater to closer shot opportunities.  He discusses stand height, cover needed within a set up, and different mindsets while scouting a location.  There is some creativity in this episode you may or may not have heard before, and it all revolves around getting Inside Twenty yards.

This week on the Antler Up Podcast, I’m joined by my good friend Justin Synan for a special conversation that was also featured over on his show, the Run’n and Gun’n Podcast. Anytime Justin and I sit down, it’s less of an interview and more of a catch-up between friends, and this one is no different. We dive into life, family, and how finding balance off the clock is just as important as anything we do in the woods. From the role family plays in keeping us grounded, to the mindset shifts that help us enjoy hunting beyond just the outcome, this is a conversation that blends real talk with our shared passion for the outdoors.

We also get into the practical side of prepping for the season—everything from scouting and reading deer patterns to being physically and mentally ready when the moment comes. Justin and I talk about learning from past hunts, what we’re focused on heading into this year, and why community and friendships are such an important piece of the hunting lifestyle. At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the journey, not just the results, and this episode is a great reminder of that.

Fall food plots greatly influence hunting success and wildlife attraction.  Planting in August and September on the east coast can be sketchy, especially when late summer droughts can persist.  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is riding solo discussing a plan of action if disaster strikes in your fall food plots.  Mitch shares personal experiences  salvaging food plots that did not establish from drought stress in the past.

Farming is always a gamble with the weather.  After initially planting food plots, Mitch discusses when to scout your plots and how to help evaluate if alternative action is needed.  He discusses what plant species work to salvage a food plot, when they can be planted, and how they can be planted.  While the process of replanting may be repetitive, there are a few things to consider between species selection, weed management, and soil crusting which may occur from drought stress.  All in all, doing something is better than nothing!

Knife making is both an art and a science. In today's episode, Jacob continues to examine the dynamics of the steel composition of high end knives and the implications of that composition. There are a lot of steels that were created in the 1940's to 1960's (A2 Tool Steel, D2 Tool Steel) that were specific for the manufacturing industry and are still used in high end hunting knives today. But what do knife steels look like as they evolved in the early 2000's and what do knife steels look like now as they evolved in the 2020's. There are often tradeoffs between toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. But is it possible to create a steel that has balance across these 3 knife steel dynamics. And, if so, what options are out there now for those looking for that balance of properties. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

If you haven't noticed, there is a new product segment emerging in the hunting knife space. Maybe it's been there all along...but it seems that there are more and more companies branching out and creating high end fixed blade hunting knives. The prices range from $200 to $400. And, while they look amazing, how do we know they are a worthy investment? Aside from the aesthetics, they all sort of seem the same? In today's episode, Jacob begins the deep dive into knife steel and some of the dynamics that come into play with regards to the type of steels that are available and how their composition of carbon, chromium, vanadium and other elements will dictate their toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate and Robert McIntyre sit down and have a conversation focused on Locating a Target Buck. The process of finding a target buck can differ between hunters, however depending on circumstances and the amount of time spent in the woods can increase your odds of finding a buck to hunt. Robert spends a lot of time each year lacing up his boots and getting to work searching and learning to increase his success each fall.

Throughout the episode the guys break down different scenarios and their strategies for finding target bucks. Be that seasonal scouting, early season, rut, late season, public, private, instate or out of state hunting. Locating a Target Buck consistently isn't something that falls into any hunters laps. Every year is a new year and sometimes it takes years of hunting/scouting to understand the system that works for you.
