Show Notes

This episode of Bama Wall Hangers is recorded at Bowen Taxidermy. Host Brad Bowen is solo in the studio, with his son Tucker out deer hunting and Sawyer at home resting from football practice. His remote guest is Dan Johnson of the Nine Finger Chronicles on the Sportsman's Empire Podcast Network. Brad credits Dan as a big reason the show exists. He heard Dan on another podcast in late spring or early summer, messaged him on Instagram asking who he listened to, and was encouraged on a phone call to just try starting a podcast.Dan describes his hunting life in Iowa and the places he has lived. He explains Iowa's seasons, including a long archery season through November with no gun season that month, and says only about six or seven percent of the state is timber. He shares a story of getting lost for eight or nine hours while turkey hunting in Bankhead National Forest in Alabama around 2005. The two compare notes on baiting permits in Alabama, the long Alabama rut, bow setups, tree stands and favorite hunts. Dan names mule deer as the animal he's most excited about. Brad names a South Texas aoudad hunt as a dream hunt, and mentions Tucker's interest in a Maryland sika hunt.In the later part of the conversation, both hosts trade stories. Dan tells of chasing a once-in-a-generation buck he guessed at about 220 inches, then heading to his stand without his bow and never seeing the buck again. Brad tells of taking his young cousin hunting, where the rifle jammed as a deer walked in. He also tells of a friend who didn't show up for a hunt, which let Brad take the biggest buck of his life. Brad also explains the Memory Mount chip that lets a phone replay a hunt from a mount. The episode closes with shout-outs to sponsors King Kutter, the Fayette County co-op and Jeremy Alman. Dan encourages listeners to relax and enjoy hunting, since no one knows how many seasons they have left. Brad shares his appreciation for Dan and for the people the show has let him meet. He says one reply to a message started it all, so never downplay anyone. Brad asks Dan to send a picture if he gets a big deer, and they talk about doing another episode after the season to share the mistakes they made.
