On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate Rozeveld and Bryan Meyering once again sit down and discuss an awesome buck Bryan shot down in Ohio. Bryan has been hunting out of state in Ohio for the last 4 years and finally connected on his first out of state buck. Going out of state with friends and trying to hunt in a landscape unfamiliar to their home state of Michigan always comes with challenges. Staying persistent and really learning how deer use a particular landscape helped Bryan find success down in Ohio.

It took 3 previous years of scouting more than hunting and not settling for the lack of deer activity for Bryan to find this particular set up. It had a few factors that keyed him onto this area and warranted him to throw a sit or 2 at it. Even with the spot being really close to a road he still felt like it was a good play for the 1st sit of his trip. Shortly into his rutcation Bryan connected on his 1st out of state buck!

Rounding out the episode Bryan and Nate recap their season in Michigan. Both guys have had some really good bucks killed by neighbors, cars, or family members. They are both attempting to locate and find other potential shooters and are not sleeping on the month of December to potentially have some good opportunities!

John does talk about a quick trip he made to the ranch, and also about his trip to Texas and the close encounter he had with his recurve bow. On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate is solo once again recapping the last 2 weeks of his season. These 2 weeks included opening day of Michigan's firearm season and his trip out to Kansas. Opening day of Michigan's rifle season is something that Nate and his son Henry have been enjoying for many years. Especially now that Henry has his own tag in his pocket and has been finding his own success the last 2 falls. This year Henry had a doe tag in his pocket and was able to fill that tag on a beautiful doe. Once again making memories to last a lifetime.

After Henry's tag was punched the next priority was Kansas for Nate. That included leaving the house at 2am and heading west. Kansas was the adventure that Nate looks forward to every fall when he travels out of state chasing whitetails. Through the episode Nate breaks down his thoughts and how the trip played out for him, including all the mistakes and success he faced. Nate breaks down every day of hunting and scouting along with every encounter he had on this trip. Kansas was unlike any other place he has hunted with a wide variety of diversity and difficult terrain.

Overall opening day of rifle was a huge success and so was the trip to Kansas for Nate. These are the moments that guys work so hard for and they go by so quickly every fall. The season isn't over yet and Nates got 3 buck tags he is still looking to fill!

Gone To The Dogs For Thanksgiving

Dogs
Coon Hunting

This episode drops on the Monday before Thanksgiving.  Steve extolls the joys of one of his favorite times of year as the episode opens.  Thanksgiving could well be called the hunter’s holiday since so much hunting activity routinely takes place on and around the traditional holiday.

Fellow podcast content creator Clayton Stark’s post on social media forms the basis for reflections by many members of the hound hunting community as they recall special memories.  Moreso than any other, Thanksgiving is a holiday for families; sumptuous meals, football games, recounts of family adventures combine to make the most, for some, enjoyable holiday of the year.

A phone call with Steve’s hunting buddy and frequent traveling companion Arnold “Nubbin” Moore rounds out the conversation as they discuss the upcoming annual trip to Arkansas and the White River National Wildlife Refuge.

With this episode, Steve and Ella, as well as the crews at Double U Hunting Supply, Alpha Dog Nutrition and Zepp Predator Calls, send a collective “Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!”

In today's episode, Jacob details how he broke down a piece of out of state public land, and in relatively short order, tagged a mature 11 pointer. As he outlines his hunt, he goes back to last fall when he felt he needed to add another state to his whitetail season. During the summer, Jacob spend time examining maps of public and private, and tried to identify a drainage system that would have several ridges dumping into it, as well as limited access points. He wanted to avoid any pre-season scouting and simply scout in season. As a result of his efforts, he found a piece that was relatively unpressured, found hot sign, and identified a ridge system that held several mature bucks.

Dan and Austin have been hunting together for the last couple years. When the deer activity slowed down on their individual chunks of private ground they decided to call an audible and shift their focus to a piece of public land that Dan and his family have been trail riding and camping on. After seeing several rub and scrape lines Dan decided to take his son Canyon out during the youth season and was able to call in 3 bucks in the first 30 minutes. This led to him putting more thought into hunting the same area during the regular rifle season. On both the drive out and the drive home Dan and Austin discuss their expectations for the hunt, their hesitancy with hunting public land during firearm season and the recap of how their first sit went. It’s an exciting episode which dives into tall tales about mountain lions as well as the management practices of multiple fish and game agencies.

In this episode, Brian Krebs and Whitney Trammell discuss the different approaches to hunting and the importance of starting with more approachable hunts. They emphasize the value of learning foundational skills and building experience gradually. They also touch on the misconception that hunting success is guaranteed and the impact it can have on new hunters. The conversation highlights the importance of patience, being adaptable, and understanding that hunting is not always about harvesting a trophy animal. Whitney shares her experience of hunting solo and the mental challenges that come with it. She initially felt scared and hesitant, but pushed through her fears and gained confidence. She emphasizes the importance of mindset and doing hard things to build resilience.

Brian also discusses his own experience with solo hunting and the difficulties of staying motivated and engaged without the presence of others. They both acknowledge that solo hunting can be mentally tough, but it also provides an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. In this conversation, Whitney and Brian discuss the importance of choosing hunting partners wisely and finding people who are on the same page. They also talk about the different strategies and approaches to hunting, including backpacking deep into the backcountry versus hunting closer to the roads. Whitney shares her experience with her podcast, Wild Strength, where she combines her passion for strength and conditioning with hunting and the outdoors. • Pushing through fear and hesitation can lead to increased confidence and personal growth.
  • Having a positive mindset and embracing the process of doing hard things can help overcome mental obstacles.
  • Solo hunting provides an opportunity for self-discovery and learning, but it can also be mentally tough and require a strong mindset.
  • Acknowledging the difficulties of solo hunting and being prepared for the mental challenges can help hunters better navigate the experience. Choose hunting partners wisely and make sure everyone in the group is someone you want to be with.
  • There are different strategies and approaches to hunting, such as backpacking deep into the backcountry or hunting closer to the roads.
  • Whitney's podcast, Wild Strength, combines her passion for strength and conditioning with hunting and the outdoors.

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is breaking down his controlled deer hunt at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. As soon as John found out he had been selected for the hunt back in June, he immediately began doing his homework and trying to learn as much as he could about the hunt and how it worked. What he found, is that there was not a ton of information out there on what to expect on this particular hunt. As he picked up bits and pieces from other hunters over the months leading up to the hunt, he still had a lot of questions leading up to the weekend of November 8th. After going through the process and coming home empty handed, he made up his mind to provide as much information as possible to future hunters who drew this coveted tag.

John briefly tells the story of his hunt and what he experienced, but the bulk of this episode is more about the process, the lessons learned, and what he would do differently next time. John lays out all of the rules of the hunt, and also talks about the terrain he encountered, the vegetation, and recommendations on gear to bring. John talks about the challenges of this hunt, and how just because you see lots of deer, does not mean its easy to actually fill a tag. He also shares some thoughts on the quality tag system, and some thoughts on whether or not this hunt may or may not be right for you.

On this episode of Michigan Wild, host Nate Rozeveld welcomes Jake Bollinger, a passionate hunter and habitat manager. They discuss the excitement surrounding the upcoming gun season, family traditions related to hunting, and the importance of processing deer personally. The conversation shifts to hunting access, land management strategies, and the significance of creating wildlife-friendly habitats. They also explore deer movement patterns, the use of technology in habitat management, and the value of community knowledge sharing in hunting. The episode continues with a captivating story about Jake's buck from the current season, which was shot in late October after making an aggressive move because the farmer drove by on a UTV.

Jake knew about this buck and was able to put the puzzle pieces together by finding scrapes and understanding how deer like to bed on his property.  After making the shot the recovery was unique and Jake was in uncharted territory after not hitting the buck ideal. He discussed the challenge of tracking and recovering his deer, particularly after a gut shot, and how waiting until the following morning was critical to recovering his deer.

Overall you can sense the passion Jake has for hunting and improving the landscape. He isn't afraid of some sweat equity and is always learning and attempting new strategies. He is very relatable to the majority of hunters who find themselves hunting the family farm or own their small piece of heaven. Leaving behind the property better than he found it is the driving force and he is already looking forward to starting habitat improvements this upcoming year.
