This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is changing things up a little bit for the opening weekend of the 2024 hunting season in Oklahoma. Due to not having the quality of bucks he has grown accustomed to chasing on his home place this year, he is hitting the road (or water) and trying something a little different. John plans to take his boat into a more remote portion of Oklahoma and chase public land bucks and bears. Thanks to some updated regulation changes this year, a bear tag is now included in the lifetime license package, meaning John and other lifetime license holders are able to hunt bears without buying additional tags. John plans to use his boat to access hard to reach public land places in hopes of tagging either a whitetail buck or black bear in south eastern Oklahoma with his bow.

INSANE Recovery On A Big North Carolina Buck

In this week's episode I have Sam Brown on to share the story of the buck he recently killed in North Carolina. This story is absolutely CRAZY. As I'm sure many of you are aware, in bow hunting sometimes everything goes perfect, and sometimes it doesn't. Some hunter's who place a less than ideal shot on a deer will attempt to track the animal, and once they fail to recover the animal, the story ends there. That is not the case with this story. Sam's story is an example of perseverance and dedication to completing a harvest ethically, after making the mistake of a non-lethal shot on a deer. You definitely don't want to miss this one. As always, thanks for listening!

The speakers delve into the intricacies of arrow dynamics, focusing on the performance and efficiency of arrows in hunting scenarios. Real-world applications and testing of arrow builds are highlighted, emphasizing the need for quality products and techniques that enhance hunting efficiency. The discussion culminates in practical advice for hunters looking to improve their setups and maximize their effectiveness in the field TODAY. Of course, nothing tests your gear like an out of state multi-day hunt. You end up getting to know your gear on a very nuanced level as something breaks, squeaks, or simply fails altogether. Nothing can be more frustrating than a piece of gear that doesn't perform. In fact, it can adversely impact your entire hunt. On the other hand, when you find the right piece of gear that makes your hunt easier and more efficient, it is incredibly satisfying.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman, Dan and his hunting buddies do a full breakdown of the last 11 days pursuing moose, caribou, bear and wolves in Alaska’s interior.

Dan along with several buddies attempted to tackle their first ever interior hunt in Alaska for almost 2 weeks. This episode is full of day to day encounters with animals they had never seen before. Between fresh wolf tracks following them out of an abandoned mining trail to getting checked by Alaskan Fish and Game agents and even a perceived grizzly charge this episode is all about their crazy trip and the opportunities they never thought would happen. Dan, Austin and Jason have been hunting together for several years but when they decided to take on one of the most sought after hunts in North America they had no idea what to expect or what they’d be getting into. Between being surrounded by the 40 Mile Caribou herd and hanging out on the side of the road watching the Northern Lights dancing overhead this will be a trip they never forget. With a few tags still in their pockets the question isn’t if they will be back but how soon they will make it happen again.

They begin the episode with a shoutout to their friend Kevin Creeley who found success in his opening weekend hunt. With his harvest, he’s on the board with the first leg of the #TriStateTrifecta down. Congrats big dawg!! The boys then go on to discuss what their last week has looked like leading up to New Jersey’s opening weekend. Chris is finishing up wrapping his gear in cloth tape to help silence it up. Angelo is primed and ready to try out some new gear upgrades including his first hunt with a camera.

After the hosts catch you up on their week past, they start to break down what a typical day of hunting looks like starting with the physical and mental prep the night prior. Chris follows a very rigid scent-control regiment including the use of scent detergents, scent covers, and ozone generators. Angelo on the other hand doesn’t utilize any scent control at all. Instead, he prefers to use the wind to his advantage when both hanging a stand and spot-and-stalking. What they both agree on, however, is the mental preparation leading into the hunt. The boys go on to break down their entire process including the walk in, scouting, changing up the plan, climbing, hanging their sets, and setting up their cameras.

Angelo and Chris continue to discuss some things they like to do in the stand to pass the time as the hours progress. Chris touches on how he uses the camera as a tool in the tree both to remain occupied as well as a tool to see what’s going on without having to use his eyes. The boys also talk about the camaraderie of hunting and different ways to share the moment. For most of us, the people you first call from the tree are the most important to you whether it be your mother or father, brother or sister, or your husband or wife. Lastly, the Boys make sure to give a BIG shoutout to their wives for their support.

We discuss some early season food sources that we like to hunt from acorns to ag fields and food plots. We also discuss our personal experiences regarding deer's acorn species preference. Mitchell talks about his experience with deer feeding on ag food sources and the correlation between time of year and drought vs wet conditions and the impact that it has on their feeding patterns. We share some of our goals and ambitions for the upcoming season as well. Overall a really fun conversation with Mitchell. Thanks for listening!!

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore sits down with Steve Sherk Jr., a master of hunting big whitetails in the vast woods of Pennsylvania. Steve opens up about how his approach to hunting has evolved over the years, now balancing the demands of family and his guiding service with his passion for pursuing deer. He highlights his strategic shift toward gun season, with limited time set aside for bow hunting. Steve delves into the significance of trail cam data for choosing prime hunting spots and shares his observations on how deer behavior and bedding areas change as the season progresses, encouraging hunters to adapt their strategies accordingly.

Steve also shares invaluable tips on handling hunting pressure, noting the importance of flanking pressure to locate less disturbed areas. His early spring scouting methods—focused on understanding deer movement and bedding before the landscape thickens—provide key insights into successful hunting strategies. Steve talks about his favorite tactic of hunting from a distance during gun season and explains what he does to mark key beds. He wraps up by discussing the impact of acorn drops, his preference for hunting red oaks over white oaks, and his strategic plan for an upcoming six-day hunting window in late October, emphasizing travel corridors and hot scrapes as prime opportunities for success.

A long awaited and much anticipated episode this week as John prepares to head north to Kansas to chase open plains whitetails with his muzzleloaders. John starts the episode off by talking about more local things like the deer he is seeing on the ranch and an exciting new property he picked up in Texas. After running cameras for several weeks, the outlook is not looking great so far, and if he had to choose a spot to hunt tomorrow, he would probably find himself hunting public ground.

After the local stuff, John goes outbound and talks about his upcoming trip to Kansas, which if you are listening to this episode when it comes out, he is already there. John discusses his camp set up, his scouting, and what he expects to encounter. John did not have a chance to make a scouting trip over the summer, so he is going in completely blind. Though he did not get to put boots on the ground, he has spent countless hours e-scouting ever since he put in for the tag back in April. He feels confident that with a little gravel under the tire and some dirt under his boots, he can find a spot to take down a big bodied Kansas buck.

  • Cutting the hide along the hair pattern and avoiding unnecessary cuts ensures a better outcome
  • Following CWD laws and properly disposing of animal remains is important
  • Working with a professional taxidermist can result in a higher quality mount When caping a deer, be careful not to cut on top of the earbud as it can be difficult to sew back up.
  • To remove burrs, use an outdoor edge replaceable blade knife and keep the skin tight while scraping with the knife.
  • For clearing the ears, cut through the cartilage and be mindful not to cut into the inner ear.
  • When handling the eyes, stick a finger in the corner of the eye and peel off the skull, being cautious not to cut the eyelid.
