They discuss the importance of fine-tuning your existing hunting areas instead of constantly chasing new ones, emphasizing that simplicity often leads to success. Travis shares his belief that while skill is crucial, luck also plays a significant role in hunting, and it’s vital to acknowledge and appreciate the unpredictability of the sport. The conversation touches on the value of humility, avoiding the pitfalls of overcomplicating your approach, and steering clear of hunting gimmicks that promise more than they deliver.

As archery deer seasons begin to open across the country, identifying the hot oak flat for whitetails can translate into early season success. White oak flats specifically can be ideal areas for bucks to stage prior to coming to soybeans or corn, they can also serve as a primary food source on properties that lack agriculture. This week on the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast we get the chance to talk with Nicole Qualtieri. The conversation is about an article titled 'The Hunter Decline Myth' written by Nicole Qualtieri. The article challenges the fear-based marketing around the decline of hunters and highlights the importance of engaging non-hunters in conservation efforts. It discusses the per capita hunting numbers and the need to educate people about habitat and public lands. The article aims to spark conversations between hunters and non-hunters and promote a better understanding of the hunting community. Hunters are not declining, but hunting is a privilege that can be changed by legislators. It is important to advocate for hunting and share the experiences with others. The number of hunters may not be decreasing, but the availability of hunting opportunities and habitat are concerns. Success in hunting can be defined as either killing an animal or having a positive experience. An open invitation and inclusive vision of hunting can attract new and reactivated hunters.

How to Hunt Like a Wolf with Andrae D'Acquisto

On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with the lone wolf himself; Andrae D'Acquisto to talk all about the keys to consistently killing trophy bucks, hunting fresh sign, tactically pressuring deer, staying mobile, high-level thermal concepts, and above all else: hunting like a wolf

If there's any name out there that's practically synonymous with big deer, it's Andrae D'Acquisto, and for folks who haven't heard of him, he's the mind behind today's modern mobile hunting equipment and tactics. A Milwaukee-native, Andrae started building his own mobile treestands in his garage back in 1984 when he realized there was nothing else on the market that did what he needed it to do. Fast forward 40 years to today, and Lone Wolf Custom Gear is the leading name in mobile hunting.

Pierce and Andrae discuss Andrae's unique mentality when it comes to hunting giant deer, and contrary to what a lot of hunters will tell you, Andrae isn't afraid to shove a big buck around if he needs to in order to stack the deck in his favor. The guys talk about how crucial it is to stay mobile so that you're always in a "virgin spot" where deer have never encountered human presence before. After that, they dive into two thermal concepts you don't often hear about: thermal overflow and thermal creep, and after hearing Andrae's breakdown of each, you'll understand why that big one busted you last season. Lastly, the guys tease an upcoming episode all about the art of the Bump & Dump which will come out in part 2 of this conversation in a few weeks. All that and more in this week's episode!

In this conversation, Brian Krebs and Evan Williams discuss various topics related to archery. They talk about the recent announcement of John Dudley returning to Hoyt and the importance of maintaining good relationships in the industry. They also discuss the evolution of archery technology and the ability to fine-tune setups for individual preferences. The conversation covers the factors to consider when choosing a bow, such as draw weight, draw length, and arrow configuration. They emphasize the importance of accuracy and penetration in hunting scenarios and the need to find the right balance for different species and hunting conditions. They also touch on the value of having one versatile bow rather than multiple specialized bows. Evan and Brian discuss various topics related to bowhunting. They cover the importance of kinetic energy in arrow penetration, the behavior of animals when shot, the significance of shot placement, and the challenges of shooting at bedded animals. They also touch on the differences between hunting with a bow and hunting with a rifle, the benefits of adjustable draw lengths, and the advantages of longer axle-to-axle bows. Overall, the conversation provides valuable insights and considerations for bowhunters.

Takeaways:

Maintaining good relationships in the industry is important for collaborations and opportunities.

Archery technology has evolved, allowing for more fine-tuning of setups to individual preferences.

Accuracy and penetration are crucial in hunting scenarios.

Finding the right balance of draw weight, draw length, and arrow configuration is important for different species and hunting conditions.

Having one versatile bow can be more practical and cost-effective than multiple specialized bows. Kinetic energy plays a crucial role in arrow penetration, and a heavier projectile can produce more kinetic energy.

Shot placement is key when hunting animals, and it is generally better to shoot at an animal that is stopped and alert rather than one with its head down.

Animals can react differently when shot, and their behavior can be influenced by factors such as head position and body orientation.

The concept of a 'no man's land' in hunting is a misconception, as the lungs extend into the spine, and a high hit can still be lethal.

When shooting at a bedded animal, it is important to consider the orientation of the organs and adjust the shot accordingly.

The choice of bow and its specifications, such as draw length and axle-to-axle length, can impact shooting performance and comfort.

Women can exhibit exceptional focus and control during hunting, often surpassing men in their ability to block out distractions and concentrate on the target.

Choosing the right bow setup requires careful consideration of factors such as draw weight, draw length, and string angle to optimize performance and comfort.

Color choice for hunting equipment, such as bows, should take into account the environment and terrain to ensure effective camouflage.

They cover the importance of wet meadows in hunting properties, the use of compost teas to promote microbial activity in food plots, and the challenges of balancing soil health and weed control. They also touch on the concept of solarization, the benefits of diverse plant blends, and the value of focusing on the surrounding habitat rather than just food plots. Additionally, they discuss the use of herbicides, the benefits of no-till drilling, and the importance of soil amendments in timber areas. In this conversation, Jon Teater and Thomas discuss the importance of long-term habitat management and the role of consultants in implementing systems and routines. They emphasize the need to address weak points on the property and improve soil health through methods like fertilization and introducing organic matter. They also discuss the value of fire as a tool for cycling through vegetation and the challenges of using prescribed fire in certain areas. They highlight the significance of diversity in habitat and the impact of food plots on the surrounding environment. They encourage listeners to observe and experiment with different amendments and plant species to improve their habitat. Finally, they provide some quick tips for improving habitat before hunting season, including timber stand improvement, burning, and scouting.

Takeaways:

  • Trail cameras only tell you where you should have been, not where you should be.
  • Trail cameras only tell you what is happening directly in front of them.
  • Pressure is anything that causes stress or discomfort on a deer to a level that it's going to change their behavior.
  • There are really only two things that reduce pressure on deer. It is cover and consistency in pressure or lack thereof.
  • Topography is the greatest form of cover there is.
  • Variation in food value, a variation in food type composition is extremely important.

They even give some insight as to how they organize their data so it’s readily available when they need it.

The duo discusses what their plans are for this year. They share which animals they will target in which season and states. They talk about goals they have set for themselves and as a group. Chris plans to further his selective process on his family’s property as well as trying to finally put an end to the story with a buck they call “Posts”  in New York. Angelo has his heart set on a Tri-State TRIFECTA as well as filling his freezer for his family. Anyone who’s interested in taking on the challenge can use the hashtag #TriStateTRIFECTA. The Boys touch on this trifecta during their conversation.

Listen along as they lay out some tips that may help you finish getting ready for this season. Whether your a beginning or a long-time hunter, this podcast can help shed some light on forgotten check-list items. Things like D.I.Y. projects to improve gear and practice strategies to sharpen your skills can be found in this episode. Lastly, THE BOYS go on to share some hunting experiences, successes and failures from the past, public land scouting tips, how they choose the areas they will scout, and much, much more! Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by fellow Sportsmen’s Empire Podcaster, Jeremy Dinsmore.  Jeremy is host of the Antler Up Podcast and hails from Pennsylvania.  The guys first unpack some of the archery season preparations.  Jeremy tells the tale of how he gained back confidence in the stand, a story we can all relate with.  Then we head into the kitchen, where both guys can agree, processing deer to fit your family needs goes a long way, even if that includes mostly grind.  Get ready for a great story, and noteworthy tips on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick and Jeremy discuss various topics related to hunting and archery. They start by talking about their morning routines and the challenges of maintaining a clean house with kids. Then, they dive into the topic of post-shot processes and the different approaches to processing and butchering game. They also touch on Jeremy's archery setup and the importance of practicing with your hunting equipment. The conversation concludes with a discussion about the recent Mountain Archery Fest event and the benefits of participating in 3D archery shoots. In this conversation, Jeremy discusses what comes after a successful shot in hunting, including field dressing the deer and deciding whether to take it to a processor or process it at home. He shares his experience of last year, where he took three deer to a processor and processed two at home. Jeremy also talks about the different cuts of meat he keeps, such as neck and shoulder roasts, ground meat for tacos and spaghetti, and loins and backstraps for steaks. He also shares his recipe for making jerky and his favorite dish to bring to a potluck.

Takeaways

There are different approaches to processing and butchering game, including using a processor or doing it yourself. Each method has its pros and cons.

Practicing with your hunting equipment, including your bow and arrows, is crucial for accuracy and confidence in the field.

Participating in 3D archery shoots, such as the Mountain Archery Fest, can provide valuable practice and simulate real hunting scenarios.

Building confidence and honing your skills as a hunter takes time and effort, but it's a rewarding journey that leads to success in the field. After a successful shot, hunters need to field dress the deer and decide whether to take it to a processor or process it at home.

Different cuts of meat can be kept, such as neck and shoulder roasts, ground meat for tacos and spaghetti, and loins and backstraps for steaks.

Jerky can be made by brining the meat and then smoking it in a smoker.

A favorite dish to bring to a potluck could be Mississippi chuck roast served on a bun.

Firearms

In this episode, Brian Krebs and Silas Morris discuss the topic of rifle calibers and bullets for hunting in different environments. They explore the idea of using the same rifle for both whitetail hunting in Wisconsin and elk hunting in the West. They emphasize the importance of shot placement and understanding the capabilities of your rifle. They also discuss the effectiveness of different bullet types and the need for two different bullets for different types of hunting. In this conversation, Silas and Brian discuss the importance of bullet speed and size in hunting different animals.

They explore the relationship between bullet velocity and animal size, and how faster bullets can lead to quicker kills. They also touch on the idea of using a single bullet for all hunting purposes and the benefits of sticking with one rifle and one load. The conversation also covers the significance of shot placement and the need for hunters to strive for ethical and humane kills. They conclude by discussing the importance of optics in hunting and the challenges of finding a scope that works well for both short-range and long-range hunting.

https://www.instagram.com/silas.outdoors/

Takeaways:

  • Choosing the right rifle caliber and bullet for hunting depends on the specific hunting environment and target species.
  • Shot placement is crucial for a clean and ethical kill, regardless of the caliber or bullet used.
  • Understanding the capabilities and limitations of your rifle is important for making effective shots.
  • Using the same rifle for both whitetail and elk hunting is possible, but it may require adjusting bullet selection for different hunting scenarios.
  • Consider factors such as bullet weight, energy, and bullet construction when selecting ammunition for different hunting situations.
  • Faster bullets can lead to quicker kills, especially for smaller animals like antelope.
  • Bullet size and speed can influence the outcome of a hunt, but the size and toughness of the animal also play a role.
  • Using a single bullet for all hunting purposes can simplify the process and eliminate the need for constant adjustments and re-sighting.
  • Shot placement is crucial for ethical and humane kills, and hunters should strive to end the animal's suffering as quickly as possible.
  • Choosing the right optics for hunting requires considering the specific hunting scenarios and balancing the need for short-range and long-range capabilities.

This week we are continuing our mini series telling the stories that happened to our guests after they were on the podcast. I am joined by Damien Nissley as he shares a story about his spring turkey that involved trying to stalk up on a turkey, and eventually having to call the turkey away from his own decoy! I also share a few stories of mine from the past about a variety of hunts. For instance there was the time I tried to out call a couple of hens to get a strutting gobbler to my decoy, only to later learn that my decoy was probably facing the wrong way. Or the time I was unprepared for a Tom to come in so fast and I didn't have my gun up so I ended up missing the bird three times instead. I also talk about the time I woke up from a nap to find three toms about 100 yards away and how I tried to sneak up on them. On top of all that I recap one of my Canadian fishing trips from this year where, one at a time, every motor on the boat stopped working and we had to paddle to shore. With turkey season far in the rearview mirror I find that the best thing to do is to reminisce on past hunts and plan for the future. So I hope that wherever you are or whatever you're up to you can take a trip down memory lane along with me and Damien this week!

Stay Ahead of the Game: Decoding Whitetail Patterns

Bowhunting

Public Land

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, Jeremy sits down with Brandon Barlow to dive deep into the nuances of whitetail hunting, with a particular focus on preparation and setting realistic expectations. Brandon, an experienced hunter from the South, shares his unique strategies for navigating the early season and unpredictable rut. He emphasizes the importance of honing in on daytime deer and leveraging historical data to determine the best times and locations to hunt. The discussion also touches on the significance of understanding fawning data, which can play a crucial role in identifying optimal hunting periods. Brandon's insights offer a fresh perspective on how to adapt hunting tactics based on regional variations and whitetail behavior.

Brandon's approach to whitetail hunting is both practical and unconventional. He advocates for setting up cameras in primary bedding areas to track daytime deer activity and suggests using affordable SD cameras instead of relying on cell cameras. By focusing on historical patterns and keeping options open, hunters can enhance their chances of encountering mature bucks. Brandon stresses the importance of not putting all your eggs in one basket by targeting just one or two bucks, but rather having multiple options to increase overall hunting efficiency. This episode is packed with valuable takeaways that can help hunters stay ahead of the game and make the most of their time in the field.

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Brandon Barlow on today's episode of the Antler Up Podcast.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman is bound to ruffle someone's feathers.  Take it with a grain of salt; it's two average Joe's having a conversation about their opinions of hunting in PA.  Our guest is John Kolb from Suffering Outdoors, and he and Mitch discuss five items that they believe if changed would improve the hunting opportunity in Pennsylvania.  Both John and Mitch are avid bowhunters, so the majority of this discussion revolves around improvements for our own self-interest.

Before we start, let's make it known that we both believe the Pennsylvania state agency does an excellent job of collecting data and making well informed decisions for our hunting seasons.  This is not an episode of critique, rather expanding on what's already worked well in the Keystone state, with a dash of selfish-interest.  We start the episode by listing a few things the state has already implemented that have made hunting regulations easier or created better hunting opportunities.  From here we break down our five points of interest, leading up to our grand finale. Let's just say, the final point argues the use of a trigger during archery season...  What do you think would make hunting PA better?

Deer Update & Assessing Your Hunting Situation with Jeff Pritzl

Strategy
Conservation
Whitetail
Bowhunting

On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with the Wisconsin Deer Program Specialist, Jeff Pritzl to discuss all major deer hunting updates, how dynamic of a state Wisconsin is to manage deer in, how the Department of Natural Resources really operates, how public input is crucial to getting things done, why not everyone's hunting situation may be a reflection of DNR data, and how you as an individual can become an amateur biologist to accurately assess the health of your deer herd, hunting situation, and hunting expectations.

After a career in the field of biology, Jeff Pritzl now sits at the Deer Program Specialist for the Wisconsin DNR. Jeff's job is anything but easy as he looks at the wide range of struggles and experiences that deer and deer hunters deal with across a state with an extremely diverse landscape. In the Southern Farmland Region where deer can exceed 70 per square mile, to the Northern Forest Region where populations are a fraction of what they once were, there is no 'one size fits all' approach to addressing the issue of deer management in our great state.

Jeff also dives into the nuances of not only helping the DNR to manage deer populations across the state, but also the people hunting them and the challenges that come with that. People may look at data that claims there to be so many or so few deer in an area, but on a 40 acre piece, it certainly may not seem that way during the 9-day season depending on a wide range of variables. If that sounds like you, it's up to you to let the DNR know, attend you CDAC meetings, and take advantage of public input opportunities.

The guys also discuss how you can go about assessing your own deer herd and hunting situation, and how you can not only understand the sphere of influence you may have on your herd, but how you can assess the trends you're seeing over time in your area.

This is a great conversation that covers a wide range of topics, all of which should leave you thinking about how you hunt this fall. Enjoy!
