Joshua Hubbs (00:14.605)
Okay.
Ricky Brule (00:28.423)
He's a lot of things. He's a brand ambassador, digital creator, photographer, archer. Josh hubs, welcome to the range. How are you man?
Joshua Hubbs (00:36.752)
I'm doing pretty good, doing pretty good.
Ricky Brule (00:38.881)
Yeah, awesome. Yeah, we just, well we chatted a couple of days ago and you were just, were out in the hills of, well, maybe mountains of New Mexico. Is that right?
Joshua Hubbs (00:50.742)
Yes sir, yeah we were out there in I would say mountains. Mountains in New Mexico, that's some brutal country out there. Big canyons, steep rolling mountains. We were back in the back country, four miles hunting elk.
Ricky Brule (00:54.87)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (01:03.706)
man, that's awesome. was like sitting at my desk, know, clickety clackety away on my keyboard and all I could think about is how much I wanted to be there. And then maybe perhaps you would have wanted to be in my position considering the amount of work you, you know, that was, was ahead of you. don't know.
Joshua Hubbs (01:18.861)
Yeah, man, some of those, I'll tell you what, donkeys and horses make a difference out there when you shoot something in one of those canyons.
Ricky Brule (01:28.691)
I bet. Absolutely. I've mentioned this a bunch of times, but when I hunted in Idaho, we ran into a group of gentlemen. were all in their like sixties and seventies and they had pack horses in there with them. And I was like, I was like, man, that's pretty cool. And they actually offered to pack an elk out if we ended up getting one, which was kind of, which was really nice of them to do. Cause I was just thinking about that, but at the same time, like
You know, from my first elk hunt, kind of want to, I don't want to be spoiled on it. You know what I mean? I want to know what it's like to have to pack an elk out. So I wasn't sure whether I would take them up on it or not. But, so anyways, why don't we, have you give our listeners just a little bit of an introduction. You know, you can kind of talk about yourself, what you do and, you know, what, what led you to be on this podcast with me today.
Joshua Hubbs (01:56.641)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (02:08.397)
Yeah, so my name is Joshua hubs, I'm 27 years old I've been a diehard archer and videographer slash photographer for quite some time now I think we're going on a little over 12 years now started out honestly started out with a phone and then worked my way up
but that kind of got me into shooting and everything else. honestly, archery got me into the filming world and all that. That's kind of my side gig that I do, freelance on the side. And then I work for the Department of Homeland Security as my nine to five here in Arizona. So run a pretty busy schedule, but I try to work hard so I can play hard. And my play hard is just getting out there, filming hunts and getting after hunts myself.
Ricky Brule (03:02.633)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's cool. You've been pretty hard at it. I've been following along for probably the last four five years. And I've seen your social channels grow, and it's been really fun to see all of that developing. You've been using our products for a while as well, so we really appreciate that. You've helped us out a ton there. And I just recently noticed, too, that
I think you, who was it that you, you were out with like Eric Chesser and crew out on a mule deer hunt recently weren't you? Get hushin', that's the crew.
Joshua Hubbs (03:38.648)
Yep.
Yep. Yep, we were, they were actually on that New Mexico hunt. I was filming for them. We filmed a Utah hunt with Casey's son Gage. Then I filmed with Eric and then we just on this New Mexico hunt and that was there out there as well. And those guys grind.
Ricky Brule (03:59.689)
Mm-hmm, bet. Yeah, absolutely. Well, that's really cool, man. Like I said, it's been really kind of fun to watch your journey and see how that's all been going for you. Let's talk a little bit about, you you said you've really been into, you know, bow hunting and you're an archer. Let's talk a little bit about your bow setup. What, you know, head to toe, what bow are you shooting and then all the accessories that you, you, that's where I wanna look for, all the accessories that you're using currently with your bow.
Joshua Hubbs (04:29.473)
Heck yeah. So my setup across the board's pretty much, no matter which bow I get, it's kind of been the same for the last couple of years. So I've got the Hoy Alpha X 33 right now. I got that at, my draw length's 29 and a half, and I'm shooting it at a little over 80 pounds.
I've ran the same rest literally on every single bow that I've owned. It's been a VaporTrail rest from the Pro V all the way up to what we have now, the GIA that's integrated and all that. Got everything on there. The site that I'm running, I run the dialed RXOS is what I was running, but now I'm running the dialed proof site. And my strings, my strings are VaporTrail strings there. And I Quattro Archery stabilizers.
Ricky Brule (04:57.15)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (05:12.943)
My arrow setup is Easton Axis Long Range. Absolutely love those arrows. I'm a big promoter of four millimeter arrows just because I'm sure you've seen, I like to shoot long range and having a four millimeter arrow just a little less wind drag and more penetration at those longer distances. So, especially when you're out here in the West Arizona, you kind of have to take some longer shots sometimes on these coos deer.
Ricky Brule (05:38.454)
Yeah. Yeah. And it's a, it's a, it's a smaller target too, right?
Joshua Hubbs (05:43.485)
Yeah, mean, people don't realize, I mean, they think of a whitetail and they think of a pretty good aiming radius, I would say probably 14 inches or so. But when you get on those Cus Deer, I would say it comes down to like nine inches, 10 inches. Like it's quite a bit smaller. They're no bigger than a dog, honestly.
Ricky Brule (06:00.49)
Mm-hmm. right on I I would love I it's my dream to get down there and hunt Coups at some point. I've got some family that lived down there zone I actually spent a year down there myself and I've never had an opportunity, but we keep talking about it. So one of these days we're gonna have to bite the bullet and Try to make it happen Definitely on the bucket list so that alpha X that you're shooting. What is the tell some of the specs on that bow?
Joshua Hubbs (06:20.671)
Definitely definitely recommend
Ricky Brule (06:29.087)
If you know off the top of your head like what's the axle to axle IBO that kind of stuff
Joshua Hubbs (06:32.971)
man, so I believe the IBO on that boat, I wanna say is 340. Axle to axle, 33. And the letoff, I think that I'm running on that right now is 80 % that I'm running on there. And I don't know the brace height off the top of my head.
Ricky Brule (06:52.625)
Okay, and then so what are you at 80 pounds with your setup? What what are you getting for? Not that this is a really big deal, but it does play a play a role in a factor and you know those long distance shots that you're taking. What do know what you're getting for speed out of that bow?
Joshua Hubbs (07:10.155)
Yeah, so my arrow setup again is the Easton Axis Long Range 4mm. I'm running the 55 grain half out on there with 125 grain tip. I believe with my wraps and fletchings, everything comes out to be right around 490 is my total arrow weight. Again, draw like 29 and a half and then a little over 80 pounds. So the arrows are coming out right now at about three, it's like right at 300, right around 290.
Ricky Brule (07:19.86)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (07:25.982)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (07:38.175)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (07:39.051)
490 grain arrow coming out about 290 around three. It's the upper 90s. yeah, honestly, huge thing for distance. I know a lot of people see arrow weight and they see poundage and they think, if I shoot this heavy arrow or this heavy poundage and this light arrow, I'll get the distance. It comes down to peep. So I've measured it a few times. My peep from my D loop measures six and like a quarter up. And the higher your peep is, the
Ricky Brule (07:44.7)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (08:08.105)
more distance you're going to get downrange.
Ricky Brule (08:09.726)
Mm hmm. Yeah, generally speaking in it and it, you know, and you're also shooting the dialed so that helps, you know, increase your range a little bit, you know, because you don't have to dial your site down quite as far. So it gives you a little bit of range before your, know, before your arrow may potentially be hitting your scope housing. So it has that feature too. And I did want to mention
Joshua Hubbs (08:29.589)
Yeah, that angled rail. That angled rail is awesome. I mean, I don't know if everybody knows how that works, the science behind that, having that rail not straight up and down, having it angled towards the bow, it just decreases your pin gappage the further down you get instead of increasing the pin gappage that a straight rail does.
Ricky Brule (08:50.761)
Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I've got a PRUF site at HQ right now waiting. We're going to be, I'm going to be filming my North Dakota mule deer hunt here in a couple of weeks. And so we're going to head over there, I think on Monday, which will be, well, it'd be the day before this, this episode launches, but we're going to head over there and we're going to, you know, get some, get some video, get some footage with Taylor and the guys and get the.
get the site mounted on my new bow, get some content there for this upcoming hunt. And so I'm super excited. It's been there for like a few days now. I was like, hey, you you could always just mail it to me if you wanted so I can, you know, hold it for a couple of days before I come up. But now he's just, he's going to hang onto it I'll pick it up Monday. So I'm pretty excited about that. That's going to be awesome. I never had an ex, you know, I've had a few people, I know some people that shoot the arcs. So was locally here and I've looked at them.
Joshua Hubbs (09:26.663)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (09:31.901)
Yeah. Yeah.
Ricky Brule (09:48.375)
And just basically based on kind of relationships, it was hard for me to make the switch over. But now that I've seen the newer basically 2.0 version of the ARC SOS in the proof, it just looks like a phenomenal sight. And I'm super excited to get it on my boat and start shooting it.
Joshua Hubbs (10:07.731)
Yeah, I feel you there literally the day before my New Mexico hunt it showed up on the porch and When I showed up to camp the guys were like, why do you have a box in your truck? That says dialed I was like do this is a new site. I couldn't wait I I opened it up and I was like looking at it before we went up the trailhead
Ricky Brule (10:19.696)
hahahaha
Yeah. Yeah, it's amazing. I've been, I had a chance to get a sneak peek at it several months ago when it was in its prototype phase and Taylor was going over all the new features of it. And I'm just like, my gosh, this is, this is exciting. So, you know, it's in the archery industry, you know, there's a lot of the innovations have come so far, right? They've come a long ways, but now it's, it's becoming somewhat stagnant because the technology can only
Joshua Hubbs (10:23.949)
I can't wait to get this back on the bow.
Joshua Hubbs (10:40.091)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (10:53.692)
You can only do so much with it before now you're kind of getting away from what makes a bow more of a primitive hunting option. And so in order to kind of maintain some of that integrity, you know, there's only so far you can go before now, now you call it start calling it a crossbow, right? So, but the, see something like that, like they're definitely doing something different, doing something new and innovative. And I,
Joshua Hubbs (11:12.243)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (11:23.356)
I always want to be on the leading edge of that. So I'm pretty excited to start shooting that site.
Joshua Hubbs (11:28.839)
Yeah, definitely. Seeing a huge push towards that customization side too, since like you said, that stalemate's kinda happening and now it's coming down to looks, it seems like we can tweak looks a little bit and get all those new customization stuff out there.
Ricky Brule (11:34.748)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (11:45.018)
Yep, absolutely. So far this year, what species have you hunted so far this year and do you have anything else coming up for the rest of the year?
Joshua Hubbs (11:57.381)
Yeah, so this year I started off with turkeys in Oregon, was successful there with two birds, and then came back to Arizona and there's the OTC hunt here, which starts, there's an early hunt in some of the units, but most of them open up in December and January. So did go after that early hunt, but man, this year was brutal. It was hot, really hot for a long time down here, so.
That hunt was not as successful as I wanted it be, more of a scouting trip for what was coming to the water tanks and stuff. And I'll be getting back after that here in December and January. Also got a couple buddies that have tags down here, some archery elk tags that I'll be helping with. And then I have an Arizona rifle or archery elk tag that I'll be taking up here in a month. Just a little less than a month, I'll be out there chasing some bulls here soon.
Ricky Brule (12:51.644)
It's awesome. Super jealous, not gonna lie. I'm excited to start getting back at it again here as far as, you know, I haven't had a Western hunt in a long time. yeah, one of these days, I mean, once the kids are old enough, we're...
Ricky Brule (13:14.396)
If we could find a mountain that's on an ocean beach, that would probably be the best. I think that my wife would like that. I know, that's what I keep saying to you. like, well, I don't know if we can, I was like, what about a mountain with like a crystal clear lake? How about that? But, know, one of these days we'll see how it goes, you know? Speaking of kids, was, so right now I'm looking outside and this is the first.
Joshua Hubbs (13:20.535)
Sounds like Hawaii.
Joshua Hubbs (13:31.131)
There you go. There you go.
Ricky Brule (13:42.972)
snow we've had all year. We probably got about a half inch of accumulation already on Halloween. And I'm like, you know, when you get to my age and you have kids, these are the things that I'm concerned about. I'm, I really wish the snow could have waited just one more day because my, my daughter absolutely loves Halloween probably more than anything. She looks forward to it from the day Halloween ends till the next, to the following year. She's constant. She's planning out her costumes, everything.
Joshua Hubbs (13:59.175)
You
Ricky Brule (14:12.762)
And now she's probably gonna tweak out on me when I tell her that she's gonna have to bundle up along with her costume because you won't be able to see it, you know? So I'm just like, I'm over here going, man, why couldn't the snow just waited one more day? So, but anyway, so quick rundown to what, I'm curious, you you've been hunting for a long time.
Joshua Hubbs (14:22.394)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (14:43.11)
Tell our listeners about a story about one of your favorite hunts or maybe it's not your favorite hunt but maybe something crazy happened. Something like that.
Joshua Hubbs (14:54.975)
Man, I would I would have to say probably one of my favorite probably craziest two hunts was my first Roosevelt Bull elk. It was a rifle hunt. It was it was in Oregon and man, I want to say I was probably I think I was like
14 or 15 at the time and my parents house, so I'd go up from my parents house every day. There's this clear cut up the river a little ways and I'd run up to this clear cut and before and after school. I was like always up there and I was getting excited because it was the first time. was the first time we had moved to Oregon and after six months you could actually hunt there. So it was the first year we could actually hunt and I had been watching these elk and I knew they were in this clear cut.
I was going up there every chance I could to kind of like pattern them. And I remember it was like two days before the hunt and I came down off the mountain and I was like, dad, these bulls are up there, you know, like there's three good branch bulls up there pushing 300 and a whole bunch of spikes and rag horns and the cows, there's probably 15 cows. The herd was probably about 25, 30 in total. And I was like.
we gotta get up there at this time and we gotta be ready. And I had it down to the wire. I was timing myself when I'd wake up in the morning and getting up to the clear cut, like hiking up through the timber, getting up there and then watching the elk. And I was like, okay, so if we time it right, we'll be there at daybreak at this time and everything. So the day before season, I believe it was like a Friday, and I laid everything out on the floor. So as I woke up,
I'd be getting dressed as I was getting to the door, because I was just excited. And I had my dad's coffee maker on a timer so he'd be ready. I told him, hey, we're getting up at this time. And we're going to be going. I was stoked. so the morning comes, and my alarm goes off. I've been awake staring at the ceiling for I can't tell you how long. I couldn't sleep, restless night. And I'm getting dressed, going to the door. I heard my dad's alarm go off.
Ricky Brule (16:48.675)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (16:57.87)
Ha
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (17:05.923)
walk out in the kitchen and you know I start making breakfast and I'm eating breakfast and packing my backpack and I'm like you know my dad should be up already he's not up yet so I go in there and I'm like hey dad you coming and he's like yeah I'm getting up I'm getting up so I finish packing I take his bag I throw it in the truck I get everything ready I'm kind of I'm dressed and I'm like sitting at the counter and I'm waiting for my dad to come his coffee's done and I got in a travel cup for him and everything I'm like waiting and I go back and hey we we got to go like we're running out of time like
these elk leave this clear cut almost when that sun comes up, like they're out of there, like we gotta go. He's like, yeah, yeah, I'm getting up, I'm getting up. And he's getting slow. So I go out and I start the truck and I'm sitting, I got the truck going, I'm waiting for him. He goes into the kitchen, he's making his peanut butter toast and grabs his coffee, know, and he's kind of like moseying out to the truck, toasting one hand coffee. And he's like, hey, did grab the rifles? And I'm like, yes. I'm like running down a checklist. I'm like, I got this, I got this. And he's like, well, I'm gonna go back and double check. I'm like, dude, we gotta go, man.
And at this point, I'm getting frustrated, know, and it's kind of, we're buttoned heads. We're not seeing eye to eye very well. It's father, son, little argument going on there about how we need to go. And he's like, hey, you know, it's okay, it's okay. And I'm kind of pressuring him. Anyway, we leave the house 15 minutes later than I wanted to. We start driving up the hill. I start busting on him, telling him he's driving too slow. And I'm like, dude, we need to go. Like, we're late. Like, let's keep going.
Ricky Brule (18:06.701)
You
Ricky Brule (18:22.38)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (18:34.275)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (18:35.172)
Anyway, we get up to the spot and now you have to hike up this ridge. It's probably three, 400 yards up to the top and then you walk the ridge out to this clear cut. It's probably about a half mile walk once you're up to the top. I grab my gear, I run up to the top of the hill and I get there and I look back down. My dad's like not even halfway up. He's like still basically at the truck and at this point I'm frustrated. So I'm not gonna lie, I got a little mad at my dad. We're definitely not seeing eye to eye on this hunt.
Ricky Brule (18:48.185)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (19:04.951)
like we're arguing, we're fighting at this point. And finally get him to the top, walk in the ridge, we're walking. I'm holding my straps and I'm just head down trucking. And I'm telling him he's slowing me down and he's telling me I should just wait at the truck, I shouldn't come. And then I heard something which was, I was pretty positive it was a bugle so I stop and I look at him like, did you hear that? He's like, no, I didn't hear anything. And the sun's like, it's just getting enough color in the sky that you can start to see.
Ricky Brule (19:05.027)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (19:34.763)
If you weren't in the timber, you could probably see a little bit. And I was like, no, I'm pretty sure that's a bugle. He's like, no, it's a bird. And I was like, I don't know. So we start hiking and I'm going faster because I'm like, dude, I'm positive this was a bull. Like, I know it. And I hear it again, like just a hundred yards up the trail. 100 % it was a bugle that time. There was no doubt in my mind. He looks at me he's like, did you hear that? And I was like, it's a stupid bird. And I keep walking because we're just, we're not on the same page at all.
Ricky Brule (20:00.749)
Ha
Joshua Hubbs (20:04.291)
And then finally we get to the road that leads out to the clear cut and we're dropping our packs, we're in a hurry. And I'm like, hey, just stay with me on this road, we'll come around and the elk should be filing across it here soon, because they always come out the top. He's like, no, I'm going to take the high ground. I'm like, dude, whatever. At this point I was like, I'm done listening. We're having a father-son argument on the mountain. We come around this road.
Ricky Brule (20:18.713)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (20:32.083)
He's up on the hill, down on the road, and as soon as I turn the corner, right where thought Elk would be, the cows are filing across the road. And I look up and I see him, he's probably 30, 40 yards above me, and he's like, shoot! And I remember I seen a branch bull getting ready to cross the road, I pulled my rifle up, and I went to shoot, nothing happened, the safety was on, and I never wrapped around it, so I was like, I'm yelling at him to shoot, and I'm trying to load.
And he's like, I want you to get your first bull. I'm like, stop arguing with me, just shoot one. And so I just like, I need to settle down. So I remember I laid down in the middle of the road and it's like an old skid road. The grass is kind of like a knee height. And I remember I dropped my pack and I'm on top of my pack and I'm aiming straight down the road and I'm watching through the re-prod. I can see these antlers. They're just coming through. They're walking. That's like the only elk that was walking. And he's coming through real slow.
and I like tunnel vision. I'm just focused on the center of the road. And I remember I had both eyes open looking through the scope and I remember his head came out. I remember he looked kind of like both ways before getting onto the road. And as soon as he took a step on the road and that shoulder met my crosshair, boom, I pulled the trigger, bull elk drops. Nice six by six, ends up scoring 298 and he's laying in the middle of the road. I'm excited. I can hear my dad hooting and hollering up the hill. He's excited.
Ricky Brule (21:58.521)
You
Joshua Hubbs (22:00.567)
mom and I'm like, mom, just shot an elk, like this is crazy. And then she's like, are you sure? Where's your dad? And I was like, he's up the hill from me. She's like, he just shot an elk. And I was like, I never heard him shoot. I've been sitting here the whole time and he's like right there. And she's like, no, he just said he shot an elk. And I was like, where's his elk? She's like, it's laying in the road. I was like, my elk's laying in the road. And then she's like, hang on.
don't kill each other, I'll be up there in a minute, I'll get your buddies, we'll get some packs up there, we'll help you guys pack it out. So I run up to my dad and I'm like, I shot that elk, he's like, son, I don't wanna break it to you, but I shot that elk, and I was like, wait, what? And so he shows me his brass, and he's like, where's yours? And I take my gun, I got two shells in there, right? And my brass is on the road, so I run back down and I grab him, like, here's mine. And he's like, huh, I never heard you shoot, and I was like, I never heard you shoot.
And even though we weren't eye to eye the whole time, we were arguing, we were fighting, somehow at that exact moment, we shot at the same time at the same Bull Elk. And when we flipped that over, three inches apart were impact points of both guns. We smoked that thing. And yeah, was kind of, it was my first Bull Elk. It would have been my dad's like 12th or something. And yeah, it was just one of those things where
Ricky Brule (23:12.153)
Dude
Ricky Brule (23:21.848)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (23:26.038)
you know everything came together at one point even though we were separated and we're arguing we're fighting just at that one time everything was just perfect and we're looking at the same spot same elk same time
Ricky Brule (23:37.987)
That's wild I've never heard a story like that that is a great story dude I Did not I did not see that coming That's pretty that's pretty amazing that you guys both shot at the same time And I suppose you wouldn't hear each other shoot you know because of the recoil from
Joshua Hubbs (23:42.016)
Yeah, it was awesome.
Joshua Hubbs (23:52.964)
Yeah, I mean it was simultaneous. I don't think, even if you were on the canyon over, I don't think you would have heard two guns go off. I think it was just one gun at same time kind of thing.
Ricky Brule (24:01.475)
Right. That's cool. That's cool. He was going nowhere.
Joshua Hubbs (24:04.128)
did. No, yeah, he got hit with a 30 on six and a seven mm. wait, that thing was he was done.
Ricky Brule (24:11.189)
Well, that's amazing story. when you first started talking and you were talking about how old you were and with your dad, it reminded me, I always ask this question and I forgot to ask it right in the beginning. So we're gonna backtrack just a little bit. But tell us a little bit about your bow hunting origin story. Like I'm guessing, most of the time, people start out.
you know, hunting with a gun or something like that. And then they move their way into bow hunting. But tell us a little bit about that. How you, how you got to start shooting a bow and started hunting.
Joshua Hubbs (24:43.176)
Yeah, so grew up hunting with my dad. Honestly, there's photos of us. He had me in a backpack on his back and he would take me out and when I was little. So that's kind of how I progressed into hunting and I went with him and
Ricky Brule (24:52.917)
That's cool.
Joshua Hubbs (24:59.234)
rifle hunting is what started, but he had a bow, a Matthews Solo Cam, I wanna say it was like a mayhem or something. It was an older bow and he had it in a bow case downstairs and I would always watch hunting videos and see all these guys shooting bows. Well, his bow was like 50 to 60 pounds and I remember I saw it downstairs, I was watching, I believe, I wanna say it was the crush with Lee and Tiffany or something that like they were bow hunting elk and I was like, I wanna do that and my dad's like.
No, if you can pull a bow back, we'll get you a bow and you can start practicing. So I'd go down there and I'd look at his bow in the case and man, I tried pulling that bow back every which way you could. Put your feet on it, pull it back, sitting on the ground, pull it back. I was trying anything I could to pull that bow back and for like a month straight, as soon as I got home from school, I would run downstairs, try to pull on that bow, couldn't do it. So then I'd start doing pushups and I was like, I'm gonna get this bow back one of these days. And then one day,
I run downstairs, pull that bow back, and it was like a struggle, like as hard as I possibly could, and it finally cammed over, which his draw length at the time was way longer than me, so I'm like back here with this string. I was so excited I got the bow back. I ran outside and we had a dirt mound in the back that was built up from digging a ditch, and I was like, knocked an arrow, tried to draw it back again, couldn't get back that time, of course. So the next day I get out there, and first thing I did, knocked an arrow, draw it back, and was shooting.
Ricky Brule (26:21.481)
Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (26:27.604)
I was at this dirt mountain, was like, finally I could get this bow pulled back. after that, it of just progressed, you know, and he told me once I could start hitting a paper plate and all that, he would, take me out hunting and I just kept shooting it and kept shooting it. And eventually I got good enough that I could pull it back, shoot it, got my own boat, right size and everything else and went out there and that kind of just lit a fire under me. Nobody...
Ricky Brule (26:49.631)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (26:56.182)
He didn't bow hunt anymore and didn't even then. And ever since I picked up a bow, honestly, most of my bow hunts have been pretty much solo, unless some of my buddies come tag along with me, but usually all my bow hunts have been solo. And I liked it because rifle hunting got to the point where for us, it was like, hey, there's a deer. If you like him, he's yours basically. It kind of became the point of.
All right, I see it, I shoot it, we pack it out. It was kind of one of those things. The hard part was finding it, not killing it. And I wanted to challenge myself more. And after seeing all the bow hunting videos, that's what it was. And I'm gonna be honest with you, my very first September with a bow, I remember I was by myself, same kind of, I was hunting the same area we had chased those elk in with my dad. The elk were coming over the ridge in September. I was in the timber waiting for them. Cows were funneling through. I remember seeing this bull, he was,
48 yards and I was like, I got this all day long. I emptied my entire quiver, didn't touch a single elk. And I was like, I can't, remember coming back down the hill with no arrows in the quiver. I couldn't find a single one of them. And my dad's like, what happened? I was like, nobody's going to believe it, but these, I, I, there were so many elk. I shot all my arrows. This elk was running around and then I was following the herd down the hill. And I was like, it was crazy. And he's like,
Ricky Brule (27:55.957)
Hmm.
Ricky Brule (28:01.183)
Hahaha
Joshua Hubbs (28:22.975)
Sure, you got excited, didn't you? And I was like, no, I swear. Yeah, that honestly progressed into like an addiction. I was like, this is way harder than rifle hunting. I'm not gonna drop it. And since then, up until last year, everything I had harvested had been with a bow. Everything from bear, deer, and elk, everything was with a bow all the way up until last year I shot a buck with a rifle for the first time in a while. It was kind of fun to pick up a rifle again and go out there.
Ricky Brule (28:50.791)
Right? Yeah, that's pretty cool. I haven't hunted with a gun in quite some time. I've hunted with a muzzleloader a couple years back, but I didn't even see anything, so I didn't have any opportunities at success there. I look forward to being able to maybe go hunt with my uncles again and stuff like that and try to spend some time with them and bring a rifle with me. I've got a bunch, but they're just...
Joshua Hubbs (29:13.904)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (29:19.261)
You know, they're just sitting in the safe, you know, every once in a while, just, you know, run a patch through the barrel and make sure there's no rust forming on it back in the safe. It but yeah, it's fun. Rifle hunting is fun too. So, and that's how I cut my teeth as well. But, I just, out of curiosity too, when you said that you were shooting, when you, when you were first starting to try to dry your dad's bow back, do you remember how old you were when you were doing that?
Joshua Hubbs (29:27.275)
Yeah, yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (29:45.662)
Man, I believe I was like a freshman. I was either just like in middle school or I'd just gotten into high school. Would have been right around that time because that's, it had to have been right around that time because I started, as soon as that happened, I realized that the Bo-Rack, or not the Bo-Rack, Bo-Tech was right there in Eugene, Oregon.
And that's when I started going up there and I was like, hey guys, I finally pulled the bow back. I want to be able to get a bow. What do you guys recommend? And I started talking to those guys and built a relationship with Mike Harrington and Henry Bass that was up there at the time.
Ricky Brule (30:20.979)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (30:27.047)
Yeah. Yeah, right on. Yeah, I know those two guys to Mike shoots are are are arrest I believe or he did at one point I'm not sure if he does now. And then you know, Henry, I've just you know, I've met him through, you know, some target shoots and stuff like that. I think I met I think I talked to him in Vegas one year at the Vegas shoot but and I think Josh
Joshua Hubbs (30:46.461)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (30:53.725)
think that one of the guys that was running the pro shop there, name was Josh, used to be anyways. But now I think ever since Pure kind of took it over. That I guess that leads me to my next question. What was your first bow that you bought?
Joshua Hubbs (30:57.618)
Yep. Yep.
Joshua Hubbs (31:09.808)
The very first bow I had, besides my dad's bow that I took out, actually killed my first ever archery kill with his bow, which was pretty cool. But the first bow I bought would have been, I wanna say it was a Hoyt Power Max. It was kinda like the kit bow, you know? It came with everything on it. I had that bow, and then I would say the first flagship bow I got was with Bowtech, and it was the Reign Six.
Ricky Brule (31:34.067)
Yeah, right on. That's cool. I had the rain six. That's what I, was it the, yeah, it was, yeah, it was the rain that I shot my Boone and Crocket whitetail with. And I'm like, I sold it and now I'm kind of like, dang, you know, I should have just hung onto that, but that's like the kind of bow that you frame right next to the, you know, next to the, wall mount. No, I'm kind of, yeah, it's a great bow. I love that one. so.
Joshua Hubbs (31:45.224)
Heck yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (31:51.218)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (31:56.316)
Yeah, it was a good boat too.
Ricky Brule (32:04.539)
Not too long ago, you had sent me an email and we were kind of going back and forth. You told me that you had an upcoming hunt coming here in February and you said that you you basically won a hunt to New Zealand for red stag. Is that right?
Joshua Hubbs (32:21.372)
Yeah, yep, was a random luck of the draw. Got pulled out of a hat and won a hunt to New Zealand for Red Stag here in February.
Ricky Brule (32:30.295)
That's wild. So how did that all go down? was the contest that you entered?
Joshua Hubbs (32:36.509)
So it's Blackstone Outfitters and every year they do kind of a they do a giveaway of a hunt and all you have to do is like share and comment on their posts. One of my buddies tagged me in the post and I looked at it I was like, man, I don't know, you know, it's, don't know, their following is a little iffy. I was like, it could be real, could be not. I was like, you know what? I'm gonna throw my name in. I'm gonna share it with a bunch of people. I did, I didn't think anything of it. And then
Ricky Brule (33:04.357)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (33:05.594)
Like a month later I get a message on Instagram and it says, congratulations, you won a New Zealand hunt. And the formatting, know, at first I was like, I don't know, it seems kind of like a robot sent the message. It was very typed up. And next thing you my phone's ringing and it's Blackstone Outfitters from New Zealand. And I'm like, that's weird. I answer it and it's like, hey man, I just want to let you know, you've got a hunt. This is your hunt dates that we have available for you. Are you okay with that? And do you want to go after Red Stag?
Ricky Brule (33:16.229)
Yeah. Uh-huh.
Joshua Hubbs (33:35.292)
free range and I was like, yeah, say less. Like, I'm down for that. I would love to go after some free range red stag. He's like, right on. So these are your hunt dates. Just let me know when you can get out here. And I was like, I'm going to do everything I can to get out there at that time. That's a bucket. Red stag and moose have been on my bucket list hunt for archery for a while now. And so being able to do that, I remember I called my mom and dad. was like, you guys aren't going to believe this, but I'm going to New Zealand on a red stag hunt.
Ricky Brule (33:38.895)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (33:42.769)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (33:57.349)
Yeah.
Ricky Brule (34:03.985)
Ha ha ha.
Joshua Hubbs (34:04.944)
My mom's like, how much did you spend? I was like, I just want a hunch. She's no way.
Ricky Brule (34:08.591)
Yeah, that's amazing. I just, yeah, I can't even imagine. And then like you said, you know, it's tough to, in this day and age, you don't know what is coming at you that's real or not, especially through social media, right? Like if you get something in your email inbox, it might be able to have some more legitimacy. But when you get that congratulations email on Instagram, I can see it being easy to just like toss it aside, you know.
Joshua Hubbs (34:34.118)
Yep.
Ricky Brule (34:34.82)
But you know, there you have it folks, that's the proof. If you just follow, like and share man, could win yourself a New Zealand stag hunt.
Joshua Hubbs (34:44.218)
Yeah, literally. The last year's Hunter, he shot a really nice stag out there. And actually, that was one of the things I did to verify, you know, I went on there, I saw they had their last year's Hunter tagged in there. So I went to his profile, I like, Hey, is this real? Did you actually go out there and do this? And he sent me all the photos like, dude, it was so much fun. You're gonna love it.
Ricky Brule (35:01.452)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. That's awesome. Yeah, I look forward to seeing how that all goes down and and you say and you're making a film, right? So you've got you got a photographer buddy that's gonna be out there and then you said you also have a videographer now that's getting sent out there with you too or Okay, okay
Joshua Hubbs (35:17.244)
Same guy is going to be running photos and videos. We're going to film the hunt in partnership with Kings Camo and we'll be out there. There's going be some new products that we'll probably be talking about while we're out there and then we'll be filming the hunt.
Ricky Brule (35:32.54)
That's cool. We'll have to talk a little bit more about that because we have We have some big things. This is probably gonna be one of the biggest ATA shows we've had in a long time We've had a product that we've been developing for quite some time. We finally have Some prototypes of it. We're using it. It's functioning well So we're pretty excited and so we might have to try to see what we can do about getting because this your hunt in New Zealand is You're primarily gonna be using your bow. Is that right?
Joshua Hubbs (36:01.13)
Strictly my bow, I'm not gonna pick up a rifle.
Ricky Brule (36:02.094)
Strictly your bow. So we gotta try to see what we can do about getting you some of those products on your bow so you can get some content while you're out there, because that would be pretty cool. But I'm super excited about that opportunity for you and just to kind of see what comes out of that. you yourself, you've got a lot of talent when it comes to, you you've got a good eye for photography and all that. And then also your buddy that you told me who's going out there with you, you know, I checking out some of his stuff. So there's gonna be a lot of really cool content coming out of that.
Excited to see it.
Joshua Hubbs (36:33.741)
Yeah, I'm excited. I can't wait to share it with everybody.
Ricky Brule (36:36.184)
Yeah. And speaking of ATA, now you're going to be joining us there this year. How are you feeling about that?
Joshua Hubbs (36:44.924)
I'm excited. That's one of the things too that I've been, I've always looked at it online and I'm like, you know, I want to go out there, I want to go out there. And then yeah, you reached out to me and you're like, hey, do want to come out to ATA? And I was like, yeah. Like, I'm going make some time, I'm going be out there. It's been one of those things, one of those events that I want to get to, kind of like the Western Hunna Expo and all that. It's just, I've never had the time. And now I finally in a position where I got the time. I'm like, yeah, absolutely. I'll be there.
Ricky Brule (36:53.552)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (37:09.508)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's great. I'm glad you're able to make it work out. You know, we always like to try to, you know, bring some people in, you know, to experience it see what it's like. And then at the same time, you know, we want somebody who's familiar with our products and who's used them in the past. So yeah, it's going to be a good time. We'll have, there's going to be eight of us out there. And then we're also, well, there's going be nine technically, because now we've got Damon Wolf for All 4 One. He's going to come out for a couple of days too. So, you know,
Joshua Hubbs (37:27.644)
.
Thank you. Yeah.
Ricky Brule (37:39.502)
between you and him, helping us get some content and all that kind of stuff. It'll be a really good time. You'll get to rub elbows with a lot of other archers and a lot of like-minded people. All the conversations we have outside the show is where all the magic happens, honestly. You know what I mean? You go out to dinner. You have a couple of drinks and just have some fun. So it's definitely going to be a blast and excited to actually finally meet you in person and shake your hand too. So that's going to be a good time.
Joshua Hubbs (38:08.19)
Absolutely, yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
Ricky Brule (38:11.15)
Yeah. Awesome. Well, that is the end of that portion of the episode. So we're going to move on to the shiny object. so I'll just, so basically I'm going to cut out that little chunk that I just said there, but I'll just do another quick little countdown. I'll jump into the second intro and then you can answer the question and then we'll move on. So this is awesome. It's going great. Thanks, man.
Joshua Hubbs (38:20.913)
Yeah.
Joshua Hubbs (38:36.391)
Right on.
Ricky Brule (38:40.944)
All right, and here we go. in three, two, one. Welcome to the range everybody. I'm your host, Ricky Brule, and this is our segment of Shiny Objects. If you didn't get a chance, make sure you head back to the previous episode where we have a conversation with Josh Hubs. He's a brand ambassador, digital creator, photographer, videographer in the outdoor space. He's an archer, and he's just out there. He's really getting at it. He's got some really cool stories about...
Joshua Hubbs (39:01.589)
.
Ricky Brule (39:09.626)
you know, when he was younger and kind of his origin story about how he got into bow hunting. And then also we talked a lot about an upcoming hunt that he's got coming up in 2025. So make sure you head back to that and give that a listen. The shiny object doesn't have to be an object. can be an upcoming adventure, a new path in life, a book, a song, you name it. It's your shiny object. So Josh, what is your current shiny object man?
Joshua Hubbs (39:25.145)
Honestly, I mean it's kind of a toss-up between two things one's kind of a hunt that's coming up and the other one is a piece of gear and I think the piece of gear I just want to talk about is For me, I'm a photographer videographer in the outdoor space and
I get asked questions all the time of the gear that I'm using and what to use. And for people just starting out, they're like, hey, if I could just buy the best setup to get me out there. When it comes to camera bodies, there's a wide range there. You can honestly can't really go wrong with either Canon or Sony. But Tamron just came out with a lens. It's a 35 to 150 f2 to 2.8.
that lens I think is gonna be a lens that is going to be probably the best all around lens for anybody looking to get into it or anybody in the space already. From rifle hunting to bow hunting in a stand, that 35 millimeter to 150 millimeter focal range is amazing. And with F2 to 2.8, you're gonna get some really crisp clean shots in there and it will perform pretty well in low light conditions.
In my opinion, that's gonna be one of the lenses that if anybody comes to me and asks me, I would highly recommend that lens. Just bite the bullet, make the purchase on that lens, and that would probably be your best all-around lens.
Ricky Brule (41:01.484)
Hmm. Hmm. That's cool. Yeah. I'll have to maybe look into getting one of those just, you know, cause I always, I mean, I'm sure most photographers can relate, you know, just like having to switch out all the time and messing around with all that kind of stuff, you know, anything you can do to increase your workflow. So that's pretty cool. And you, we were talking about a little bit earlier and you'd said you, were driving back home from New Mexico and which is like, what an eight hour drive or something like that. And then you have.
Joshua Hubbs (41:29.195)
Yeah, it's eight hours.
Ricky Brule (41:30.368)
Yeah, and you happen to see that somebody, what an hour and a half or something back behind you was selling it. So you whip the truck around and went and grabbed it.
Joshua Hubbs (41:38.944)
Yeah, yeah, it's honestly I like, but if you can eliminate how many times you guys are rotating through lenses just because of dust and dirt out there and when you're hunting or filming, having a lens that's telephoto that can do everything, that's awesome. And a 35, I mean, you get those close personal interactions, 150, you can get those further shots. So yeah, it was like, it was a no brainer. It was one of those lenses I've had my eye on for a while. And when since it came out, have a few buddies that use it right now.
and everything I've heard from it is like, this is a lens, and then I got it and I was messing with it. As soon as I got home, I was messing with it, and yeah, it's gonna be a workhorse, and yeah, if anybody asked me, that would be what I would say. If you want one lens to do it all, I would start with that lens.
Ricky Brule (42:25.366)
That's awesome. And so what camera body are you current? you have a specific manufacturer that you go with or do you have a couple of
Joshua Hubbs (42:33.248)
Yeah, so I pretty much strictly film on Sony right now. If I'm filming videos, I like to film on the Sony a7S III. It just has a better ISO, and for people who don't know ISO, it basically is like artificial light that it allows you to bring in so that it brightens up the photo. So it has a better range in that form and can take better low light photos and videos. And then my photo body that I use is an a7IV.
Ricky Brule (42:42.837)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (43:02.102)
I use it for video as well, but I use them because they're very similar in button functionality and kind of feel and shape. The only difference is one of them's more strictly, the A7S III takes only a 12 megapixel photo, but is killer on the video side. The A7IV takes like a 30 megapixel photo, I believe, and it's pretty good on the video side. It's not as good, but it's pretty good.
Ricky Brule (43:03.478)
Mmm.
Ricky Brule (43:22.668)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (43:27.412)
Mm-hmm, right on. That's awesome. What was the other, you said you got a trip coming up. Did we already talk about that trip?
Joshua Hubbs (43:34.304)
Yeah, it's that New Zealand trip and it's just one of those hunts that I just got lucky. I won a hunt off of an Instagram giveaway. mean, hey, you guys never know, so always throw your name out there. That's what I tell my buddies. Like, if you throw 100 names out there, one might stick. throw it out there. But yeah, it's a bucket list ton of mine that I'm gonna be able to check off. I'm gonna be chasing red stag with a bow in New Zealand. And yeah, I'm so stoked about that.
Ricky Brule (43:49.27)
Mm-hmm.
Ricky Brule (44:01.508)
Yeah, and again if anybody wants more details on that hunt we talked about it in the previous episodes So make sure you get back over there and give that a listen So yeah, man, that's really cool. Those are some those some awesome shiny objects. I've While we were sitting here talking, so I've got this really cool view like I've got all this natural lighting coming in so it's awesome I don't have to bring in any artificial light or whatever But I get I get this I get I get to look out and I can see when the when the UPS truck comes driving up
And, I've got the new 20, 25 bow from prime coming and it's actually supposed to be here today. And so I'm just like, eagerly watching outside for the, for the UPS truck to pull in and come walking out the back with that, you know, with that bowl box. And, so I don't, I don't, I'm not sure if it's going to show up UPS or it be FedEx or something like that, but we'll be here today. So I'm super excited about that to do that unboxing and check out that new bow.
That's what I'm gonna be using in North Dakota and actually and on that trip Almost everything on there is gonna be something brand new, you know, it's gonna have the proof site on there We're gonna have the new arrow rest that we're gonna launch at ATA on there I've got a new arrow that hasn't been released yet The bow hasn't been released yet. So It's gonna be pretty cool. So that's that's kind of my shiny object. Everybody already knows about it I've been beating that dead horse for a while here talking about this trip
Coming up to North Dakota, Yeah, pretty excited about that It is currently snowing right now, so I'm not super excited about that although if I was spending a lot of time in the woods and whitetail woods right now I probably would be just because you know better blood trails easier tracking and you know you can see the animals better, but But yeah, so that's that's what I got going on anyways, so
Joshua Hubbs (45:47.928)
I would say the best spot is gonna be Instagram. It's gonna be hubs14 right there on Instagram. Or you can reach out to me on Facebook.
Ricky Brule (45:56.807)
Alright, well folks. That brings us to the end of this episode. Josh, thanks again so much for your time today. I really appreciate it. Say where can people find you if they want to get in touch with you man?
Ricky Brule (46:18.868)
Cool, I actually wanna backpedal real quick here too, Josh, because there was a question that I meant to ask you earlier and I forgot to. And I might cut this chunk out and put it into the original episode. So whether it be bow hunting or photography or both together.
Joshua Hubbs (46:31.052)
Yeah.

What would be your best piece of advice for other archers out there, other aspiring photographers that are looking to do stuff in the outdoor space?
Joshua Hubbs (46:50.961)
As in getting involved with the outdoor space.
Ricky Brule (46:53.15)
Yeah, just anything that you can think of, whether it's hunting related or whether it's career related, something like that.
Joshua Hubbs (47:00.962)
would have to say it's a tough industry and the best thing to do is there's, I would say it's kind of like what I did. So to get back out a little bit there for myself is what I would say, everybody kind of sticks to the same thing. You can go on Instagram and you can kind of look at some profiles and you can see a lot of similarities where people are kind of copying other people. The best thing you can do is start watching YouTube videos, Start
looking at people that inspire you and get ideas from and kind of use it. I like to say, use them as a recipe, right? Everybody's got a recipe for what makes success for them, but you can take little bits and pieces and make your own recipe and make something that's unique to you so that you can stand out in the industry. And then just stay consistent at it. It never was just, hey, I'd like to shoot this product. Can I shoot this product for you guys?
Ricky Brule (47:42.772)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (47:58.249)
For you guys even, I shot your product on probably eight or nine of my bows before finally you guys were like, hey, you're always shooting our product. If you need something, let us know. And then we kind of started building a relationship that way. For me, it took several years, probably about eight years to get into the industry. And then from there, it's kind of, I would say it works into communication with everybody. Like if you can network.
That's key. So stay consistent, persistent on it. Don't give up right away. It's a tough industry. You're gonna have to work hard at it. Not everything's free and it doesn't happen right away. So just stay consistent, stay persistent. Find your own little niche. Get in there and make yourself stand out, make yourself unique. And then networking. Those three things I think are the key to just separating yourself from everybody else and then going from there. But yeah, definitely.
Ricky Brule (48:27.283)
Mm-hmm.
Joshua Hubbs (48:54.045)
stick with those three things and I think you could do awesome in the industry.
Ricky Brule (48:57.927)
Yeah. Yeah. I love that. That's a great piece of advice in it. And, and you're way ahead of the game at 27 years old with that knowledge. It's definitely something I wish I knew back when I was 27. You know what I mean? I'd probably be much further along than I am now. I don't have any regrets, so I don't mean to, you know, I don't mean to sound like that, but, yeah, I love that. That's great. Thank you for that.
