GoHunt Bonus Series: Nevada Big Game Applications

Bowhunting
Public Land

Big Game

In this GOHUNT Bonus Episode of The Western Rookie podcast, Brian Krebs dives deep into Nevada’s all-species applications ahead of the May 7th deadline. From record-book antelope to some of the toughest elk and sheep tags in the West, this breakdown covers the ins and outs of Nevada’s unique point system, trophy potential, and why this state is both a dream and a grind for Western hunters.

Key Takeaways:

  • Application Deadline: May 7, 2025 at 11:00 PM PT for all species
  • Draw System: Nevada uses a squared bonus point system with a true random draw, meaning you always have a chance
  • Mule Deer: Herds have declined from 240,000 in 1988 to ~68,000 today, but Nevada still boasts some of the highest antler quality in the West
  • Elk Tags: Trophy caliber bulls (350–380"+) exist, but non-resident draw odds remain below 1% even with max points
  • Antelope: Excellent trophy potential and high harvest success, especially for archery tags; good long-term state for pronghorn hunters
  • Sheep & Goat Tags: Nevada offers the most Desert Bighorn Sheep tags in the country, but draw odds are true lottery-ticket level—<1% even with 30+ points

Conclusion:Nevada remains one of the best trophy states in the West, but success demands a long-term mindset. While some tags may feel out of reach, the state’s fair and random draw system gives every applicant a shot—if you play the game wisely.

Some notable pros of hunting with your friends are that it makes you a better Hunter. It helps you learn how to hide better. It helps you understand what you need to work on. I also talk about how it's easier to take the low points of turkey hunting and it makes the high points much better. Not to mention it's easier to see with two sets of eyes and to hear with two sets of ears and we all know the old quote. Two heads are better than one!

Hunt Slowly During Spring Gobbler Season

Bird

Public Land
Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is riding solo sharing some turkey hunting experiences.  Most turkey hunters would agree that chasing gobbling turkeys and calling aggressive to a red hot gobbler is hard to beat.  However, the amount of times throughout a season that happens can be on the low end.  In reality, turkeys are creatures of habit that are seeking refuge from predators, feeding, and breeding is mixed in throughout the spring.  Patience is a virtue in the spring woods at times!

Mitch shares two different hunting experiences from the past and draws his learning points from them.  While there are no concrete rules in hunting strategy and the words "always" or "never" don't come into play, Mitch's "style" of turkey hunting was molded by his own learning experiences.  He shares his style in slowing down, listening, planning moves accordingly, calling softly, and being patient to hunt a gobbler later in the morning or even on another day of season.  Lastly, he chats about a few other overlooked benefits of hunting slowly, ones you don't want to miss!

GoHunt Bonus Series: Utah Once In A Lifetime Applications

Big Game
Strategy
Public Land

In this GOHUNT Bonus Episode of The Western Rookie podcast, Brian Krebs wraps up the Utah all-species mini-series with a breakdown of Utah’s antelope and once-in-a-lifetime species applications. From archery pronghorn tags to bison, bighorn, and mountain goats, this episode covers all the lesser-known—but high-reward—opportunities Utah has to offer. Whether you're deep into the point game or just building a strategy, this is your final reminder before the April 24th deadline.

Key Takeaways:

  • Application Deadline: April 24, 2025 at 11:00 PM MT
  • Antelope Tags: Archery, muzzleloader, and rifle tags available with success rates up to 96% for rifle hunts
  • Trophy Potential: Slightly declining but 80" bucks still possible in several units
  • Moose, Goat & Bison: Most hunts have 80–100% success rates for permit holders; DIY options exist but access can be challenging
  • Non-Resident Advantage: Can apply for all once-in-a-lifetime species (residents must choose one)
  • Point Strategy Tip: Utah’s 365-day hunting license lets you apply across two years if timed right
  • Bonus Point Draw: 50% of tags to highest point holders, 50% in a weighted random—you always have a shot

Conclusion:

Utah isn’t just about deer and elk—antelope, sheep, goats, and bison offer rare and exciting hunts you won’t find many other places. The low cost to add these species to your application makes it a no-brainer, especially if you’re already applying for big game.

On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate and Robert McIntyre dive into a conversation recapping Robert's whitetail season and his first couple days of Turkey season. Robert finished his past fall punching his 3rd and final tag on an out of state buck with his bow. That marked 3 straight years tagging a late season buck with his bow. The season was a grind, but going back to his roots was key to his success. Like chasing whitetails, turkey hunting is another passion for Robert and this season was no different. He had a wild opening day filled with birds and drama. That did not deter him and that persistence was awarded the following morning when he unexpectedly doubled up.

Wrapping up the episode some turkey gear is discussed. The guys talk about the gear used and some recommendations for the newer hunter. Both guys agree that you can get into turkey hunting on an affordable budget and can have a fun successful hunt with limited equipment.
