Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach Foundation

Big Game

Whitetail

We have a very special episode on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week. Tim Slavin runs the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach Foundation and joins John to talk about the great acts of service they provide. The foundation is celebrating their fifteenth anniversary this year, and their mission is to "provide disabled, chronically and terminally ill individuals the opportunity to enjoy the heritage of outdoor sporting activities." Tim and his volunteers have 16 hunters signed up for their spring turkey hunt coming up this April, and have two deer hunts planned for the fall.

Tims passion for this project shines through as he talks about the hunts and opportunities they are able to offer. Those opportunities take a lot of work though, and the organization is always looking for more volunteers. Tim talks about who is eligible for their hunts, and what they are looking for in volunteers. Even if you are not an experienced hunter, they are always needing folks to help around camp to cook, clean, and organize. If you don't feel comfortable being a guide, and cleaning isn't your thing, they are more than happy to accept financial help as well. They are a 501 c3 non-profit organization, and you can learn more by listening to this podcast, or check out their facebook and website at oklahomaoutdooroutreach.org

On this episode of Huntavore, the Emperor’s Table continues to fill up as the Missouri Woods & Water hosts, Nathan, Micha, and Andy join Nick for a fantastic chat.  We talk about celebration meals, including Nathan enjoying venison steak with his boy.  Things go sideways as Nick loses power, but the gang finishes with their submission to the Emperor's Table.  Join us for a great episode of Huntavore.

On today’s episode Nick is joined by the whole crew from Missouri Woods & Water Podcast, Nathan, Micha, and Andy.  These guys are always looking to hang out together, or find a way to be outdoors.  The guys like to chase coyotes as much as deer, yet cautious of putting one on a grill or smoker.  However, Micha has a love for red meat; beef and venison alike.  Something he prides himself in is his smoked beef tongue.  A very underused cut, yet surprises a lot of naysayers  with a wonder flavor that isn't off putting.  To finish, the three present their submissions to the Emperor’s Table, adding to the wonderful bounty.  Check these guys out at the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast on Sportsmen’s Empire.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Dan begins the show with some breaking news about a man who was imprisoned for beating someone to death with a moose antler. If you had to defend yourself with big game antler, which animal would you pick from? Brayden and Phil went shed antler hunting in a place that has been producing giant bucks. Find out how they used trail cam footage to know where to look for sheds. We also talked about several reasons why deer sheds are so hard to find. Dan has some unique coffee-drinking preferences.

The guys talk about their recent trout fishing trip: Find out why Dan didn’t make it. They met up with some GoWild members and had a good time. We share a must-visit location for anyone fishing in Kentucky or looking to try out fly fishing and want to catch some tasty trout. Jacob mentions what makes this time of year his dream time for fishing. He also mentions one thing to watch out for with your fly line and how to get some help from a buddy with a net. Jacob goes into battle after a brute.

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Strategy

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with fellow podcaster Brian Krebs about budgeting and saving for hunting equipment purchases. Brian and Dan talks about the "buy once, cry once" purchasing method where you are more than likely to spend a larger sum of money upfront in order to gain a product that lasts a long time. Then, once you have all of the equipment you need, essentially there is no cost to hunting outside of tags and licenses. Unless you are a true gear junkie who buy hunting gear every season no matter what.

Brian talks about how he pulls money directly out of every paycheck in to a specific account he sets aside for hunting gear. This allows him to know exactly how much money he has to play with every year. The guys also talk about how and where to look for deals and discounts. Fun episode you will be sure to enjoy!

Nick is a self proclaimed "Meat Hunter" and Dan's goal every year is to put down the oldest and biggest antlered buck as possible. Given the two different approaches to hunting, the guys have an intelligent conversation and how both types of hunters can live under the same roof. This is a fun episode, be sure to share!

Back by popular demand, Josh and Pierce chat for part 2 of the Hot Topics series. This week, they discuss the recent ban of trail cameras on public land in Kansas and the hunting fitness movement.

The Kansas trail camera movement my be the beginning of a slippery slope for midwestern deer hunters. What's most interesting about this decision might be less about WHAT was done in Kansas and more about WHY the decision was made. Is this a good move? Let us know what you think!

Another hot topic is that of fitness & hunting. Many "influencers" today give off the vibe that if you're not a bodybuilding marathon runner, then you can't be a good bowhunter. Have they gone to far? Does fitness REALLY matter for hunting whitetails?

Tune in to hear Josh and Pierce give their opinion. Then let them know on Instagram where they got it right, where they missed the mark, and what you want to hear them discuss next.

If there is one thing for certain, it is that no matter how hard we try to slow it down, time marches on. The same goes for Dick Brothers and his line of Charley Creek coonhounds. They keep marching on.

On this episode of Deep & Lonely Bryce sits down with veteran competition coonhunter, Dick Brothers, to discuss his impressive career in the sport. For more than 60 years Dick Brothers has been a competitor and breeder of coonhounds. Dick takes us down memory lane talking about his start with coonhounds, winning the 1994 United Kennel Club World Championship, and the stroke that tried to knock him down and how that event motivated him more than ever to get back in the woods.

Any given night of the week you can find Dick and his hounds deep in the woods of Indiana in hopes of treeing the next raccoon. Dick has been at this sport for several decades and has no plan of slowing down any time soon. Pull up those chaps and turn up the volume. It’s about to get deep.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch was privileged to speak with Dr. Grant Woods from Growing Deer TV.  If you've followed along with Dr. Woods for any length of time, you know how dedicated he has been to producing educational content through his channel.  With over 700 episodes of Growing Deer TV, the trials and research conducted at his farm "The Proving Grounds" are well documented.  Within this content is a journey of striving to provide high quality food plots through building healthy soil.

Food plot content has been taken to a crazy level in the media.  More people have dabbled in food plots than not, and there are more "professionals" now than ever before.  Like deer hunting, food plots can have an ego associated with the time, money, and blends growers put out.  Regardless of differing food plot blend preferences, we can all agree that good food plots start with good soil.  Dr. Woods shares with us how he has developed his food plot system to promote quality soil and highly efficient nutrient exchange.  We navigate the journey to the current day, and practices such as no-till and the learning curves associated with this management.  Dr. Woods addresses much of the confusion about the seed blends he uses and how each blend has a very specific purpose.  You'll learn how this system is allowing him to feed more wildlife with fewer input costs than ever before!

We have an awesome show as we celebrate number 150!  This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast we get to talk with Dustin Williams, owner of Habitat Works, about property planning.  We wanted to go through what it is like to have someone like Dustin come out to a property from the walk through all the way through the planning service, so we had Dustin come out to both Micah and Nate's hunting properties and do just that.  We do our best to explain each property, talk about what Dustin noticed during the property walkthroughs, and then go through his plan for each place.  We also talk about some general best practices that can relate to any property.  The next step after getting a plan in place is to start the work.  With the knowledge of Dustin's plan you can get to work yourself, or have him start the work as well.  One thing is for sure, if you are not actively working to improve your property, it's getting worse.  Dustin is a wealth of knowledge and we want to thank him for doing this very in depth show that required much more than just hitting the record button.  Give Dustin a call if you are looking to better your property in any way, he can get you on the right track.  Thanks for listening!

We kick things off by testing the tea bag coffee from Wildland Coffee and get into a chat about the various podcast styles and why we settled on the format that we did for this show. We’ve been friends with Dan for a while now; we like what he is doing and he likes what we are doing, so we decided to join forces–see what that’s going to look like moving forward. Is there another GoWild podcast in the works?

Dan questions what it really means to be an “expert” at something. He asks Brayden about his journey into becoming a fly angler and Brayden mentions his easiest and hardest parts of transitioning from bass fishing to fly fishing. Dan also talks about the challenge of having interviewed over 1,000 podcast guests and shares his experience from the recent Iowa Deer Classic tradeshow and what makes it one of the best. He recounts his glory days as a whitetail antler shed hunter and drops a bombshell bone-finding tip. He also gives us his no-fail, dummy-proof longbeard-flopping guide to killing turkeys.

Brayden set up his new rod and reel and is gearing up for a fly fishing trip with several GoWild members. He started with the Orvis Encounter rod/reel combo but is now scaling up to a DIY setup. Jacob paid off some of his marital debt to be able to join them on the trip! He also mentions his favorite flies to use this time of year.

Brad celebrated his daughter’s birthday and spent the weekend elbow deep in unicorns and rainbows. Dan mentioned how he got his young daughter a cell phone–and why he instantly regretted it! We’ve got several parents on the show today and get into the strangest, craziest, and wildest things our kids are saying and doing. If we are to rise above the chatter, tell our own story and know how to defend our way of life we have to be intentional and intellectual. TL Jones has blessed the hound hunting community for years with his short yet precise speculative writings that make us think and reflect on ourselves and upon that which we love; hunting with hounds.

TL Jones is at least a fourth generation bear hunter from the mountains of East Tennessee. His grandfather Berry Tarlton is a notable bear hunter and breeder of plott dogs. Berry resided in the Houston Valley near Greenville, TN and his strain of bear dogs is known as Houston Valley Plotts. That lineage has been passed down in the family and now TL and his son Ben carry on the family legacy.

TL joins Chris on this episode to have a deep discussion about hunting, the perception of hunting with hounds and how Houndsmen can improve the often mischaracterization of the Houndsman and hunting with hounds.

Things get a little fiery this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. There are a couple key pieces of legislation in Oklahoma right now that could have huge impacts on the way people enjoy the state's natural resources. This is a hold nothing back episode where John takes on the hard topics around laws and regulations that the sportsmen and women of Oklahoma and beyond deal with on a daily basis. The podcast starts off with some of the usual hot topics. Should Oklahoma remain a 2 buck state or go to 1 buck tag? Are crossbows really having a negative impact on the quality of the deer herd?

If those topics don't get your water boiling, there's more. A bill to start an August velvet deer season has already passed the senate and moved to the house, and could go into effect as early as next year! Not enough you say? Did you know there are people pushing to get airbows legalized for archery season in Oklahoma? Have you seen trail cameras are now banned on public land in Kansas? Topics like these can no longer be ignored, and they are only becoming more common.

As you listen to this keep in mind that these are the opinions of just two hunters.

Dan gets in to a great conversation about how rules and regulations can be influenced by non-resident interest groups who are more interested in making money than conserving the natural resource. This is where hunters need to step with a united voice and let outside interest groups know that they have no business interfering with another states natural resource, especially if they are not communicating with that states Department Of Natural Resources. This is an interesting conversation that is meant to spark thought and conversation about how hunting rules and regulations are managed in your home state. Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. As many of us start transitioning into the true off-season, we find that whitetails are transitioning in their daily habits and routines as well. This week, the guys discuss their thoughts on what deer are doing now as we roll out of winter and into spring. While we may not be able to hunt them right now, it pays off to know what they're doing. This change in pattern is very similar to what we find deer doing during the time of season where it's not quite pre-rut, but it's also not really "early season" anymore.

This week we're talking with 3 hardcore public land turkey hunters: Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public, Adrian Wilson from Tethrd, & Brodie Swisher from Hunting Roots. There's nothing worse than getting set up on a gobbling turkey on public land, only to have the hunt ruined by some guy wailing on a box call. So how do you handle that situation? This week each guest shares with us their best and worst encounters with other hunters on public land. The hope is that we can all learn from these situations, and apply these basic hunting ethics ourselves.

When emotional attachment is present with a hunting property, it can become difficult to implement the correct habitat improvements without some guidance.  Trying to learn on your own is possible, but can also be costly.  It's not uncommon to install food plots, road systems, or implement logging, only to realize later the practice was placed in the wrong section of the property, or even implemented wrong.  It's overwhelming compiling habitat improvement recommendations, especially if you take into account multiple professional opinions.  If you're considering having a habitat specialist consult your property, it's important that you work with someone you trust and has strong communication skills to reach your desired goals.  .

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast, we chat with Josh Raley.  Josh is the host of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, and also a property consultant with Whitetail Partners in Georgia.  Josh has a wide range of deer hunting experience throughout the country and understands how to manipulate property in an advantageous manner.  We discuss setting goals and objectives for a property, assessing where the highest priorities lie for improvements, and dive into a host of habitat project topics.  Josh explains the misunderstood aspects of hinge cutting, hunting access, invasive species management, and other private land habitat strategy.  We wrap up discussing what we as landowners and managers can be doing right now to improve the landscape.  It's time for some sweat equity!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Albert Tomechko (Vitalize Seed) discuss the importance of soil health and an equation that will lead to bigger deer. Albert discusses the one-two system that they offer and why their seed strategy requires less inputs. Al discusses the most overlooked aspects of soil test, and why we need to think about certain seed mixes to optimize nutrient cycling.  Al and Jon discuss the mistakes of putting too much seed down and related nutrient tie up we sometimes fail to consider.

Al discusses soil and plant synergies, and why balancing carbon to nitrogen ratios are so critical to the microbial communities in our soil. Jon and Al discuss the when, why, and how to get a soil sample, to include the depth, location and reducing variables. Jon discusses using a roller crimper and balancing seeding techniques. Al discusses where he goes to get soil samples and thinks about soil from a full spectrum perspective to include mineral balancing. Al and Jon discuss thinking through crop sequencing and thinking through the next crop (i.e. corn).

Al and Jon explain what is important to consider in the fall and why carbon building is meaningful. Al discusses options to terminate cover crops in the springtime (i.e. crimper, chopper, etc.) Al discusses when he uses a heavy legume mix and what happens when we become too clover focused. Al and Jon discuss cattle and deer browse. Jon explains simple techniques to assess your soil and how compacted soils can be detrimental to food plots. Jon discusses a simple method to evaluate seed quality and how better-quality soils and plants lead to less disease.

Josh from a very young age knew he wanted to work within the hunting industry and mentions how Half-Rack started.  Really cool story regarding that and then he follows this up by telling hunting stories!  Josh maps out his typical year for planning for the next hunting season.  From right now, figuring out what hunts he will get to come fall, to getting his property in good shape with land management and of course getting lots of time behind the bow.

We get into other hunting strategies, and stories throughout the podcast!  I am really looking forward to having Josh on again in the future.  Really enjoyed speaking with him and would like to dive deeper into some stories that helped him become successful in and out of the woods!   Enjoy this fun episode!

He recently traveled to Utah from his home in Zimbabwe to work on a project with the Utah Houndsmen Association and Brigham Young University to collect data on mountain lions. He has been a strong voice and supporter of the anti poaching K9 teams in Africa that have made a huge impact on Rhino poaching. When you meet a man named "Bobcat" you better pay attention to what he has to say. On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Keith "Bobcat" Williams of A.M. Calls. Keith makes a unique type of turkey call that uses petrified wood in place of your typical slate or glass pot call. Not only is the call a beautiful piece of art, but it makes realistic turkey noises that you have to hear to believe. An added advantage to the petrified wood is that it dries quickly if it gets wet, so they can be a great option for those misty days or spring mornings of heavy dew. Keith and John discuss the whole line of A.M. Calls, including the adjustable striker Keith offers. The striker adjusts to give the calls different sounds, or simply retracted to fit in your pocket or vest easier.

In an unexpected bonus to this episode, Keith also talks about how predator numbers are affecting turkey numbers across the nation. Keith spent several years as a professional trapper (thus the nickname) back in the 80's, and talks about how the decline in fur prices also led to the decline of interest in trappers. Keith doesn't claim to be the best turkey hunter, but throughout the conversation his knowledge of woodsmanship really shines through, and you may just want to pay attention when ol Bobcat has something to say.

If you talk with 5 different food plotters, you'll likely hear 5 different recommendations for seed blends.  Like the truck we drive or the bow we shoot, many are just as passionate about their food plots.  It can be extremely difficult to determine what seed blend fits your hunting property and scenario, when 5 different experts may disagree with each other.  The reality is, there are so many variables to consider when choosing a food plot that it's rarely ever "wrong".

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we talk with Mike Lindahl from Domain Outdoors.  If you visit Domain's website, you'll notice an abnormal amount of different seed blends.  Each blend is designed for a slightly different purpose and scenario.  Mike shares his knowledge from getting started developing seed blends, choosing plant varieties that are favored throughout the whitetail's range, and then customizing for different property goals and objectives.  Mike shares 3 different property scenarios he is working with and how the food plots look slightly different from farm to farm.  Each plan is designed to cater towards Mike's hunting goals and the property's hunting strengths and/or weaknesses.  One thing Mike emphasizes is that it's perfectly adequate to tinker with a variety of blends on one farm in order to learn and fine tune for future hunting seasons.  If you're planning your food plots for 2023 currently, don't finalize before you listen to this episode!
