What Makes a Pennsylvania Elk Hunt Successful?

Bowhunting

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by returning guest Bryan Hale of Elk County Outfitters.  One notable trait of Bryan - the man is a grinder.  He works tirelessly to maintain success at Elk County Outfitters for clients and his team.  So how does Bryan stay sane throughout this process?  That's the beauty of hunting - it's a much greater endeavor than killing.  Comradery and fellowship bring greater reward in the end.

As hunters, it can be very easy to stress ourselves out to fill a tag and meet a certain expectation.  This added stress only takes away from our experience and removes us from the present.  We dive into this topic as it relates to PA elk hunting, then shift to discussing the tag lottery system, and of course some awesome 2023 hunting stories.  Hopefully if you're not applying for PA elk, this episode sways you in the right direction!  Even if it doesn't, it definitely makes you think about slowing down and enjoying the process of hunting!

As quickly as it arrived, turkey season is almost gone! These six weeks never seem to last long enough, even though it might seem like time is dragging when you find yourself sitting in a silent woods, just praying to hear a gobble in your direction. Hopefully none of you found yourselves in that situation (for long at least) this spring, but with one week left to go, it's a sprint to the finish in the turkey woods.

This week, Pierce is joined for a second time by Drew Schleim, host of The Predator Podcast, and although Drew is a big time coyote killer, no turkey is safe from him either! The guys share stories from this spring including an hours-old story of Pierce tagging a bird with minutes to go in his hunt, and Drew helping others fill their tags while also filling multiple tags of his own here in Wisconsin and also South Dakota! Drew shares some stories and lessons learned from his time in South Dakota, how he managed to kill his first two Merriam's turkeys, and also shares some fantastic tips for punching a late season tag here in the badger state. It's a great conversation that will leave you itching to get out in the turkey woods one last time!

On this week's episode Mitch is joined by good friend and hunting partner Earl Thomas.  Earl is one of the most passionate turkey hunters Mitch knows, and annually sets out to hunt in multiple states on what has been dubbed the "Redneck Turkey Tour."  Earl has been fortunate to tag a handful of gobblers already this spring and still has a few hunts left.

Every hunter's experiences lead them to hypothesize and act a certain way while pursuing game.  This has led to many coffee shop conversations such as, does weather impact turkey gobbling?  What about the barometer?  Are we hunting spring gobblers in Pennsylvania too late?  While we don't directly answer those questions, Earl's experience is food for thought.  Turkeys are wild animals, and their brains are much different from humans - they are "finicky" birds!  We may never figure out what makes them do what they do, but persistence and determination go a long way.  This is one of the many reasons why Earl is sending pictures of him with turkeys at any given point throughout March, April, or May.  Enjoy the perspective and experience from this wise ol' bird!

Outstanding Youth

Coon Hunting
Dogs
Strategy

When your dad’s the most successful Treeing Walker breeder in recent history with major money wins, World Championships and Hall of Fame inductions at every turn, it would appear that sharing the big stage, the limelight if you will, would be a long time coming in the shadow of dad Randy’s success.  When you have the attitude, work ethic and the respect for the game of a seventeen-year old Troy Smith, being recognized for your own achievements seems as natural as summer rain.

In this episode, Steve heads up to western Pennsylvania to hunt with Troy and Randy and to record Troy’s story.  The trip entailed two nights of hunting with a pair of Lone Pine yearlings, Lone Pine Phara at seventeen months and Lone Pine Phalse Profit at fourteen months.  A total of nine raccoons were seen on as many trees on the two-night hunt.  The second night was a short one as Steve respected the early departure time for his homebound flight.

This recording is worth your time for a number of reasons, especially if there are young hunters in your family or circle of friends.   It presents the opportunity to view the sport and what it holds for young ones that indeed will inherit it and carry it forward.  Refreshing is the word that comes to mind.

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast we get the chance to sit down with Stephanie & Andrew White. The Whites are avid hunters and farmers that both grew up with a love for the outdoors. That love has continued into them being full time farmers and avid hunters to this day. One thing that has come out of the love for those things is Stephanie's desire to write books that gave more of a voice to those communities, especially as it relates to children getting excited about them. Stephanie's newest book titled "The Hunt" is an awesome read for kids and parents alike. In today's show, we talk with the WHites about their background, go off on a few tangents and rabbit holes, and then talk about Stepahnies book journey, and even get into the hate from.......well.......haters. Thanks to the Whites for taking the time to come out and record and thanks for listening!

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is headed back to Nebraska to chase merriam's turkeys. John hunted Nebraska in the spring of 2023, but was so sidetracked by scouting for deer on the new landscape that he didn't take turkey hunting near as seriously as he should have. Heading into the trip this year though, John had a completely different mindset. He was determined to bring home a merriams, which would be his third of the four subspecies of wild turkey.

This trip brought plenty of challenges, and though John had no problem finding birds, getting one into shotgun range proved more challenging than he expected. Like many western animals, the merriams he was chasing seemed to have no predictable pattern. Simply traveling wherever the wind blew them on any particular day. After three long days and a few disappointments, John finally caught up to a small group of strutters on the last day. However, even with a long beard at fifteen yards, John found out it's never easy!

Coon Hunting

When host Steve Fielder was a young hunter attending coonhound events in Virginia and West Virginia, prior to his registry days, he often hunted with John Sturgill and Les Bolen.  The duo were coon hunting buddies and were a force to be reckoned with in competition and on the numerous pleasure-hunts our host enjoyed with them in those days.  Each man was noted then and now for having world class Plott Hounds.

Recently, Jamie Estep, who joins Sturgill and Bolen in this episode, designated the annual National Plott Hound Association’s West Virginia Plott Sectional the John Sturgill Tribute Hunt and Show.  Sturgill was honored throughout the recent three days of hunts, shows and bear events.  Estep invited Steve to judge the bench show on Friday, setting up the perfect opportunity for the friends to get together and recall old times.

This is a feel-good conversation centered upon hunting in the rugged West Virginia mountains with Plott dogs.  Estep recalls Sturgill and Bolen as role models for his own career which now includes the title of Field Representative for UKC and anchor for the YouTube video coverage of the popular Tournament of Champions for coonhounds.

Steve is betting you will really enjoy this one.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Tom Biebighauser (Wetland Restoration and Training) discuss the importance of wetlands and restoring our properties with better management tactics. Tom has developed highly successful and inexpensive techniques for restoring wetlands and streams that should last forever without maintenance. He cautions against using berms, dams, dikes, levees, weirs, diversions, pipes, pumps, water control structures, or wells that all require frequent and expensive maintenance. Having built over 1,400 dams he has since decommissioned over 300 dams and impoundments, restoring natural valleys in the process.

Tom explains the benefits of wetlands and wet areas for deer and how we can better utilize these areas to enhance our hunting properties. Tom explains the benefits to deer, why deer need wet areas and the health benefits to deer. Tom explains how to build a wetland, taking a soil test, and how deep you need to dig to understand the right amount of clay to get the areas to support all season water. Tom explains the importance of groundwater in certain areas to establish wetlands. Tom explains site selection for creating wetlands. Tom explains in many instances why creating channels, ditches are not necessary to maintain water within these wetland areas.

Tom details how to establish wetlands in dry areas to techniques that can support wetlands during droughts. Tom explains the rare species that come to wetlands and how to better the ecology and related predators within the food chain. Tom explains why plastic water holes are unhealthy and how these are impacting the areas so negative. Tom explains why midges and mosquitoes come to exist in wetlands and how to reduce the volume of certain insects on the landscapes.

Tom explains the benefit of building wetlands with woody debris. Also, using natural large boulders and other rocks to ensure there is diversity of structure in and around wetlands. Tom explains the benefits of planting trees in wetlands and how to manage cattails in these areas. Tom explains water fluctuations and how to reduce non-native plants in wetlands. Tom details native plants that are ideal in wet areas and benefit wildlife. Tom explains the method to create a technique of creating uneven ground establishing more diversity. Tom explains why dams do not work, flooding, muskrats, and beavers are the demise of dams. Tom explains the top plant that deer eat in wetlands.

The WWA's Public Land Restoration Initiative

Early mornings, cold fingertips, shots ringing out over the marsh, and a limit of ducks on the strap might feel like a lifetime away right now, but in the words of Wisconsin Waterfowl Association's Executive Director, Bruce Ross, "If you want birds in the sky in the fall, you have to put them on the ground in the spring by creating good habitat." The key point there is, "creating good habitat", and that's exactly what the WWA is setting out to do with the launch of their new Public Lands Restoration Initiative!

In partnership with the DNR, the WWA is setting out to help identify, evaluate, plan, and implement restoration on historic wetlands across the state that have been impacted by agricultural drainage and/or development, and this week, Pierce sits down with Bruce Ross to hear all about this new initiative, and how they plan to get it done. It's a fantastic conversation that will leave you searching for the sign up link to join WWA, as Bruce shares what the WWA is all about, what they're doing to help protect and restore wetlands, how they're going about educating hunters and non-hunters alike, and so much more. Whether you're a lifelong waterfowler or someone who's never even thought about it, this episode is for you. Go check out the WWA website to learn more about all the awesome work they're doing at wisducks.org, and mark your calendars for Saturday, August 24th to attend the Waterfowl Hunting  Expo in Oshkosh!
