How to Capitalize on the Rut with Tony Peterson - From the Vault

Big Game

Public Land

Aaaahhhh, sweet November is upon us! The rut will soon cure our every woe, and whitetail bucks will throw caution to the wind and run circles around our stands just waiting for us to take a shot at them… right? While the rut can be the best of the year to arrow a mature buck, this is no time to take it easy. In fact, increased buck movement should motivate whitetail hunters to work even harder to make sure they’re in the right place at the right time.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Tony Peterson about how Tony approaches hunting the rut. For Tony, scouting is critical as he wants to put himself in a high odds spot that gives him the confidence that a buck he’s after will swing through. The guys discuss what kinds of things Tony focuses on during the rut, how much things like buck sign and hunting pressure play into his strategy, and why it’s crucial to keep moving if you’re not on the action. Enjoy!

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan sits down with Nick Queen to recap the final few days of their Wisconsin archery hunt and the events since.

Dan and Nick hunted together for several days on a public island in Dan’s home state of Wisconsin. The two found amazing deer sign and experienced extreme rutting activity for an early October hunt. After several encounters with mature bucks, the pair decided it was time to go all in as they pursued a public land giant. This episode relives the final days on the island and the rollercoaster of a journey that they have experienced since.

The rollercoaster of life keeps rolling right along for Paul and Andrew.  This week Paul actually spent the time in the woods looking for bambi, while Andrew continues to ride the struggle bus of life.  Paul did not have any luck but was able to take advantage of an OHLAP property to have some good encounters with our white tailed friends.

This weeks show covers hunting white tail deer with Gregg Farrell of First Lite. Gregg has been with First Lite for a long time and really helped develop and bring to market a lot of the gear we use day in and day out in the white tail woods.

Good luck as you get out in the woods, and enjoy the upcoming few weeks, because the most wonderful time of the year is upon us!

The Science Behind Concealment

Big Game

Does your camo pattern REALLY matter? The old timers were killing deer in blue jeans. Tons of deer have fallen to the cheapest thing on the shelf at Wally World or hand-me-down faded out Mossy Oak. Guys in the north rock red and black plaid against the snow white backdrop. So it stands to reason that camo is overrated, right? Right?!

While camo doesn't kill deer and isn't essential for being a successful hunter, quality camo CAN keep you concealed and comfortable, meaning more hours in the field. But what all goes into high quality camo? In this episode of The Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with Ev Tarrell and Jamie Dykman of Code of Silence about the science behind their camo. Enjoy!

No Lowballers - Silencers: How They Work, Their History & How To Make Them Last

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking silencers and their development throughout the years. Allen dives right into how the original silencer was created and where the inspiration for them came from. He goes into just exactly how a silencer makes a firearm quieter and the science behind it. Jacob brings up the applications of hunting with a silencer. From whitetail or even hog hunting, a silencer opens up a ton of different options for you to hunt, with an added bonus – it’s way better on your ears in the long run. Check out this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all about how silencers have changed the way a large majority of people hunt today.

We talk about the materials that a suppressor is made from now compared to originally. From stainless steel, which could’ve probably been used as a boat anchor, to now being made mostly with titanium or other lightweight materials, the weight on the end of your rifle has dropped dramatically with a silencer attached. We go over how they are manufactured including some that are even 3D printed today. Many of us are looking forward to seeing if manufacturers start making firearms with silencers built in versus having to buy a separate one to put on afterwards. With many other countries actually requiring silencers at ranges, we’re all very interested to see if the U.S. will ever follow suit.

Closing out, we talk maintenance and lifespan for suppressors. Allen goes over how many people are led wrong when it comes to the lifespan side of that. Many of them can last long enough for you to pass down to your children, if taken care of and cleaned correctly. Speaking of cleaning, Allen goes in depth on how he cleans his personally, but highly recommends you follow your manufacturers recommendation for cleaning. He also goes in depth on what silencers you can purchase currently on GunBroker.com, with thousands of listings you should be able to find whatever it is you’re looking for!

Returning guest Shane Loney joins Michigan WIld to recap the last 7 days of bowhunting with Nate. Shane does give a quick recap of his season so far which consisted of passing a couple 3.5 year old deer along with some tough hunts. Shane did have 2 successful doe kills already this fall and broke down each hunt. Nate then shares how the week started in a similar fashion for him and how he quickly adjusted. That adjustment paid off when he ended up killing a buck October 22, 2023.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch is joined by friends and hunting partners Mark Lesher, Mike Lesher, and Jason Miller.  The four have a round table BS session revolving around their New Jersey hunting trip that took place Oct 9-14.  The area was new to everyone so we first discussed the scouting trips from late summer into fall.  The terrain and habitat type was much different than other areas the group has bear hunted in the past, so it was a unique learning experience.  From here we dove into the events of the week of hunting, totalling over 30 bear sightings, two bears and one buck killed.  A lot was learned on this trip - and we can't wait for next year!

While he may have left us thinking that none of us know how to fish, he let us know it was a much needed break from touring and interviewing after releasing his most recent album Family Ties. Dan dives into his recent scouting trip preparing for his hunt at Land Between the Lakes. His crazy trail camera experiences have continued over the past week. He put some good miles on his boots going to check his camera, maybe even an extra mile that he didn’t have to put in. He decided to hang a second camera, but the camera woes hit again. Pro-tip - don’t trust Amazon branded batteries. Listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all the possible things that can go wrong when checking your trail camera!

Next up Brayden goes into his recent weekend public hunting for whitetail. Complete with an awesome set of oaks to hunt, perfect wind, perfect weather, it was building up to be an awesome morning in the woods. Unfortunately, the morning hunt didn’t go as planned, but he and Phil had another plan to hopefully induce some success. They headed to an old tree orchard with perfect lanes, taking it slowly looking for deer. His first time ever hunting for whitetail on the ground produced some heart pounding moments. Make sure to tune in to see exactly how it all panned out.

Closing out Brad talks about his recent weekend deer hunting. He had his slowest day yet, and still managed to see seven deer! Deer after deer after deer showed up on his afternoon sit. A few small bucks showed up with a few does including a real nice six-point that is going to be a stud in a few years. He held tight and then even his target buck showed up, make sure you listen in to see how crazy his evening got! You definitely won’t want to miss this one.

Tony Hill with Find it Fred joins Michigan Wild this week. In this episode Nate and Tony get into some hound talk, which includes chasing bears and tracking whitetails. Tony grew up in a family of hunters and was always outdoors at a young age. He tagged along with his older brothers and dad chasing rabbits with his beagles and whitetails up north at their deer camp. About 5 years ago Tony decided to get into deer tracking and then soon after he got more hounds for chasing bears, coons, and coyotes.

Through this episode the guys cover hunting bears with Tony's dogs and all the dedication it takes to have a successful pack. It's a challenge Tony loves and the reward of seeing a bear in a tree and his dog's work is worth the effort. Nate and Tony finish the podcast talking about deer tracking with his hound Fred. Nate has first hand experience seeing Fred work and really appreciates having Tony as a reliable resource to help recover deer.

Overall a great episode between buddies who both have a passion for whitetails and watching their dogs work in the field.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan chats with Michigan hunter Brock Wingo about a special draw hunt he went on this year. Each year the state of Michigan allows hunters an opportunity to hunt a in a nature preserve in a special regulation lottery. Brock explains that he drew to hunt the first 7 days of the archery season. He talks about the preparation that went in to this hunt, the importance of e-scouting, getting information from other hunters who hunted this property, and what happened when he ran in to other hunters in the locations that he wanted to set up in.

Because of his work schedule, he was only able to hunt 4 out of the the 7 days as well as sacrificing some of his time to look for a buck that another hunter shot. Luckily, Brock was able to locate a huge rub line that led in to an isolated bedding island in the middle of a swamp. With a couple close calls, and attacking the deer from the ground, Brock shares the story of this special hunt.

Trench Warfare – Weapons of WW1

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re covering anything and everything in trench warfare. First up on the slate? The big guns – artillery. Artillery was used mainly to bust up troops bunkered down in trenches. As the design of trenches evolved so did the artillery, during WW1 the proximity fuse was refined for artillery to pepper the troops below with shrapnel. Artillery was used in conjunction with trench mortars which were lobbed super high to hopefully come down in the trenches and rain down molten hot shrapnel directly inside. Shrapnel from artillery and mortars was absolutely devastating on the battlefield, causing all sorts of flesh tearing, bone crushing wounds.

Next up, we get up close and personal. You guessed it, bayonets. A common misconception on bayonets is that they’re just a giant knife, but they are not made for that at all. They can somewhat take an edge but the type of steel they are made from is more designed for thrusting and penetrating through body armor. While still holding a place on the battlefield today, it seems that it has migrated more towards being a traditional piece, with a much more diminished role. Post-WW1, standard bayonet size has shrunk dramatically. Starting at a 16” blade standard issue in WW1 all the way down to a 10” blade in modern warfare. The shrinkage in blade size caused many of these to be ground down to a 10” blade, which created a very large subset of collecting in bayonets with original Model 1905s still in their 16” configuration quite rare to see!

Closing out our episode we dive into “Trench Shotguns.” If you’re shopping for a WW1 shotgun on GunBroker.com, you may want to listen in to this episode beforehand. On the flip side of that, if you’re a seller of a Model 12 or 1897 we apologize ahead of time! A long standing belief of WW1 shotguns were that they were used as a “trench broom” to go through and clear trenches of enemies, but due to new research it seems that the primary use of WW1 shotguns was actually rear guard duty for guarding prisoners in camps. Allen goes into the top Model 12s and 1897 shotguns from the WW1 era sold on GunBroker.com and the price range that they went for recently.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 195 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and a damn good hunter, Ryan Glitsky!  Over the last couple of years Ryan has really put himself out there when it comes to being one of the hardest working hunters.  Between putting the miles on scouting and hunting, Ryan sure has a lot to offer when it comes to advice.  We didn’t waste any time in this episode as Ryan shares what you need to be doing right now in the woods to be successful!

We begin this episode by hearing Ryan share the importance of pre-season and in-season scouting that helps guide his decisions for the where and when to hunt.  Ryan shares trends that he has observed over the past few seasons between trail cam data and time on stand that will help you right now during this week in October.  Ryan discusses what he does when it comes to hunting mature and cautious bucks and a whole lot more! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Skip Sligh (Iowa Whitetail) discuss technical hunting strategies around building better hunting locations. Skip explains the reality of Iowa whitetails, deer hunting, and explains what permits him to have success on his own farm and those that hunt with him. Skip details the specifics on locations he hunts and how to improve a property for better bulletproof setups.

Skip discusses entry and exit, and when it is too risky to hunt certain areas. Skip explains the basics, but essentials, to getting into a hunting area. Skip explains how he has made consistent access points that relate to his daily chores and other work on the farm. Skip discusses the features he creates or natural topographies to his hunting location that he uses during his hunts.

Skip explains his specific farm and how neighboring pressure can disrupt plans to hunt a specific deer. Jon explains his tactics on a particular deer and how he decides to go after a mature buck. Skip details how he plans on hunting a mature buck in mid-October and why he shifts his odds with multiple setups. Skip explains how to shrink a deer’s core range and make landscape improvements to ensure hunting becomes easier.

Skip and Jon discuss introducing children to hunting, teaching success in different ways to our kids, and giving youth the chance to make their own way in the woods. Skip explains why children do not fully appreciate large antlered deer and his goals with his own son. Skip ends with when he is hunting and how he plans on killing a 7.5-year-old mature buck.

Jon and Skip both talk about success stories this season so far and what we can do as hunters to continue to perpetuate success in our communities.

The late season junkie tags one early! This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John tells the story of his early season archery buck he named Stone. John is not a big early season hunter. In fact, he has repeatedly preached how early season is not a good time to hunt for the majority of people out there. But, leave it to mother nature and a buck named stone to make a fool out of him. With drought like conditions, a major storm, and a buck who held on to his summer pattern a little too long, things worked in John's favor only 5 days into the 2023 deer season.

In this episode, John talks about the off season scouting and habitat work that laid the groundwork for his October hunt. With the dynamic of his neighbors changing, John has had to rethink his habitat and property layout. Those changes and a lot of hard work in the spring payed off with a solid buck at 18 yards on October 5th! By far the earliest in the season John has ever tagged a mature buck, or any whitetail for that matter.

Today’s show opens with us talking about gear searching on GunBroker.com. Dan daydreams about a new .30-.30 that he’s had his eyes on for a while. We talk about maintenance for our outdoor equipment for this upcoming hunting season, it can get pretty expensive quickly if you’re not careful! Brad talks about putting time in behind the bow in preparation for his upcoming hunting season, he had to swap out his sight but he’s still shooting pretty consistent groups out to 30 yards which is as far as he’ll be shooting on his hunting spot. Brad’s new hunting spot is a tree farm that has some positive outlook for this season, almost like clockwork every afternoon at 6:00 PM it’s a deer party! Brad’s first day in the stand was a super interesting one, deer were absolutely everywhere all evening. He ended up stuck in the stand having to wait until deer cleared out of his area, listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to see what showed up after he dropped his bow to the ground!

Next up Brayden goes into his weekend hunting the first cold front of the year. The temperatures were all over the place from sweating when arriving at the stand to cold by night. It seemed like the perfect recipe for a great evening of deer. The only caveat? The wind was all over the place which may have led to a slower evening of deer. Brayden’s new saddle setup caused him a little bit of a headache during the first sit this year but once he fine tunes his new setup it’s going to be super convenient for him, listen in to see what he changed on his setup this year. We talk about the best positions to sit in the tree saddle to be the most comfortable. We all have some interesting ways to get comfy but Dan’s may take the cake. He calls it the koala bear; you absolutely have to tune in to hear his description of this!

Closing out we talk about waterfowl hunting. Brayden and his crew were drawn for an absolute sweet duck hunting spot this year. We talk about just how different duck hunting is in different parts of the country and how everyone seems to hunt ducks a little differently. We talk about how waterfowl hunting is a different type of “fun” hunting. It’s often miserable when out in the woods but the good hunts always make good stories afterwards.

The October Lull: Fact or Fiction?

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

Opening day is in the rear view and for many, early season aspirations have turned to broken dreams. Now the deer movement seems to have dried up in all of our tried and true spots. What happened? Is this the (cue the ominous music) OCTOBER LULL?! Well, yes and no. Studies Show that deer movement increases throughout the month of October with no decrease. But the experience of many hunters is that deer sightings by mid October have slowed to a trickle. What's going on here?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn, Jake Hendrickson, and Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about the dreaded (or nonexistent) October Lull. The guys talk about what goes into hunters' perception of a lull in deer movement and how they would adjust to target a mature buck during the middle of October.

Famous Firearm Flops

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking famous firearm flops! Guns that had huge potential to change the industry, but just could never gain the steam. We start off with the Colt Model 1855 Revolving Rifle, which was a super interesting concept, but design flaws kept it from really taking off. One of the biggest problems was cased ammunition not being invented yet, as well as manufacturing issues straight from the factory. Now, remade with a modern take in the Heritage Rancher Carbine, these guns have gained some popularity and there’s still one common problem, no one knows how to hold them when shooting!

Next up, we delve into the 1960s, The Great Space Race! Astronauts, rockets, and Gyrojet Rocket Pistols! A rocket fuel powered firearm that was extremely complex and awesome, but just too early for its time. Arguably one of the best names for a handgun ever, it was hammer fired, but the hammer was in front of the cartridge that then drove it into the firing pin. The downside is that you didn’t get your maximum velocity until the bullet was downrange.

The Remington Model R51 had an absolute fantastic lead up to its launch, tons of good content and marketing hype that really made this gun a must have, but there was a downside? The gun was subpar at best. Different from the original R51, it was unfortunately a complete flop for Remington, who swiftly buried any evidence of its existence under the rug. A great conversation piece in firearm history, however, they can be picked up for a fantastic deal on GunBroker.com.

Closing out, we talk about the Heckler & Koch G11. Caseless ammunition has stumped manufacturers for years and with the H&K G11, it was no exception. Ahead of its time, with a large failure to launch these guns are extremely hard to find, however other caseless ammunition does sometimes pop up on GunBroker.com. Still to this day the caseless ammunition has not been figured out or mastered, hopefully one day in the future! Allen goes over some of the examples of these guns and ammunition you can find today on GunBroker.com.

Using Historical Data to Hone in on Big Bucks with Brandon Barlow

Ever feel like you're just behind the action? Like you're always just a few days behind, hunting last weekend's sign when the deer seem to have moved on? Or maybe you've fallen into the trap of following trail camera photos from this year and you're often too late to the party? Situations like these are why many hunters are beginning to rely more and more on historical data. Using historical data to tracks certain bucks' seasonal patterns or when certain areas seem to switch on every season has garnered a good bit of attention in the last few years. And there's one good reason for this: it works! But it only works if you gather, analyze, and track the right data in the right way and then ACT when the time is right.

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with Brandon Barlow about using historical data to hone in on big bucks! Brandon has lots of experience tracking specific bucks and specific areas and has been able to consistently capitalize on his intel when the time is right. In fact this season, he nearly called his shot and was able to take a public land stud in September.

In this episode, the guys discuss Brandon's overall approach to historical data, how he uses both SD and cell cameras, how mock scrapes play into his strategy, and how he times his hunts to make sure he's there when the buck he's after finally shows. This is a FANTASTIC episode for anyone looking to take their hunting strartegy to the next level. Enjoy!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and good friend of mine, Chris Weist!  Over the last couple of years Chris has really dialed in his hunting strategies that has led to more encounters and more success.  Chris for example was successful last year killing 4 bucks in 3 different states all with different tactics! As hunters, we try our best to put in the work to scout and make up the best gameplan we can to find success.  Well, sit back and enjoy this episode as Chris shares tactics, stories and scenarios that will help you this season!

We begin this episode by hearing Chris share the importance of post season scouting that helps guide his decisions for the upcoming season.  He uses his time scouting to get an understanding of the woods and how the deer in that area specifically use the terrain.  Chris keeps tabs on the data he collects during the post season and during the season, especially when it comes to trail cameras.  This allows him to map out where and when to hunt.  We discuss the critical component of access and plans for hunting specific spots this fall.  You will hear a ton of information when it comes to scrapes! Strategies, stories and scenarios will be shared that I hope a lot of you will be able to relate to and be able to implement this upcoming month! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Today’s show dives into everything that could go wrong for bow season as bow season is opening. Jacob starts off by telling a range story of shooting his bow this past weekend. You guys won’t believe what he did with his bow at the range! Listen in to see exactly what he did and what you definitely want to avoid doing yourself. Brayden then goes into a bow fiasco of his own. After having his bow almost dialed in, an arrow rest change reset him to day 1 on the range. Dial into this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all the bow woes we’ve faced so far.

Next up Arica speaks on her recent interesting weekend and raves about Fit to Hunt’s bow strength program. Having some issues recently getting her bow back effectively she spent some time working out to help her bow strength. She’s seeing impressive results and has her bow dialed in with field points, now she’s working on broadhead accuracy. Hold on to your seats because we go off on a wild tangent about flat earth, warning systems, and if we’ll all be zombies by time this episode hits your ears.

Closing out Dan updates us on his Land Between the Lakes scouting trips for his upcoming hunt. He excitedly goes into details about checking his trail camera, you guys won’t believe what shows up on it! He checks out a new spot that looks super promising on an old logging road running atop a long ridge line. He has a perfect line of sight picked out and a hopeful way to keep other public hunters from coming into the area while he’s there. With good cell reception he’s already receiving photos that are promising. We also go over good practices for dragging out your deer this season safely. Make sure to keep hydrated, keep some calories in you, and take it nice and easy or better yet don’t forget the deer cart!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is solo and talks about his access route strategy, using thermals, and playing the wind. Dan breaks down how he access's some if his favorite stand locations in both "Big Woods" and "River Bottom". He explains in detail how he uses the terrain in his favor and not walking through areas that hold deer. Dan talks about his "90 degree" rule that he uses when reverse engineering his access routes and stand locations. Then, once in the stand, he discusses the importance of knowing the thermal drive and how that will react with the terrain and the predominate wind directions. This is a very detail oriented episode that you will be sure to enjoy.
