Bowhunting

This week Mark covers his 18 years of real estate land sales, along with the ins and outs of buying land.  How to navigate agents and find someone that will add value to your investment.  There has been an influx of new land agents and branded brokerages over the past 10 years.  Some are knowledgeable and others are posing as specialists without experience.

Land is one of the best investments you can make.  Build a legacy and grow trees to support ownership.  Whether you have representation or purchase without an agent, there are many factors to consider.  Land only appreciates and the value is only what someone is willing to pay.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are joined once again by Jason Goe from Final Stand YouTube channel.  Previously Jason discussed hunting Sika deer in Maryland, this week we unpack the rest of Jason's successful fall of 2023.  Jason was able to harvest a mountain whitetail with a bow, a fall gobbler, and his first Pennsylvania black bear.  In addition to PA and MD Sika deer, he tagged two whitetail bucks with a bow in MD during the archery season.  Talk about a season to remember!

We breakdown the timeline and story behind each of these hunts.  Throughout this episode, you'll notice two things consistently - passion for being in the woods and attention to detail.  Jason maximizes his scouting trips as much as possible which paid great rewards this fall.  This is especially apparent in the story of his PA whitetail he harvested on a new piece of public mountain land the first year he stepped foot in it!  We cap off discussing the spring 2024 turkey season where Jason plans to hunt MD and PA, with hopes of completing the PA Grand Slam and continuing his streak of harvesting a PA spring gobbler since the early 2000s.

Ruminations From The Spring Hearing with Alec Bekkers

Conservation
Whitetail

Public Land

Every April the Wisconsin DNR releases a questionnaire to the public to ask for public input regarding conservation-related issues that are on the radar looking towards the future. The in-person Spring Hearings are then held by each district's Conservation Congress, where citizens can ask questions, and make their opinions known about issues that matter to them. It's an incredible opportunity for regular people like you and I to provide input, and an even better opportunity for outdoorsmen and conservationists to help further initiatives towards positive change. Some of the questions also make you think pretty hard.

This week, Pierce sits down with Wisconsin BHA Board member, Alec Bekkers, to discuss a few of the Hearing questions that stuck out to them the most, and more importantly, what some of them mean for conservation, public land access, and hunter/angler rights and opportunities.  The guys cover a little bit of everything including: trout regulations, wake boats, panfish limits, technology in the outdoors, houndsmen advocacy, and most importantly, that outdoorsmen need to do a better job of showing up, making their voices heard, and fighting for hunter rights. It's a thought-provoking conversation that's just the tip of the iceberg. You can go find the spring hearing questionnaire on the DNR website, and join Backcountry Hunters & Anglers at https://www.backcountryhunters.org/join

Travis discusses other ways to develop plants and ideas around developing better plants that have higher survival. Jon and Travis explain the benefit of using fabric to reduce weed competition and

Travis explains his new property and activities around enhancing each area and ways to make changes on a new hunting property. Travis details current federal programs, and improvements surrounding upland birds, Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), and row tree planting. Travis breaks down his new property and areas that are problematic and plants like cattails, and limitations related to the WRP program that are impactful. Travis details the steps of adding fruit trees, food plots, tree plantings. Travis discusses removing cottonwood trees and cattails. Travis discusses turning a property around that has very few deer.

Travis goes through the steps of removing cottonwood, and why it's necessary to reduce species that over compete other preferred plants. Travis explains mistakes he has made with removing trees and what chemicals work best when removing certain tree species. Travis discusses designing a property around fire and how if its not done properly it can limit your ability to maintain a property. Travis discusses wetlands, the importance of removing non-preferred plants to support an increase in duck interest and feeding. Jon discusses beaver areas and the related benefits after these animals disband these areas. Travis explains the importance of emergent wetlands and overlooked plants in these areas. A Texas Turkey Tale

Turkey
Bowhunting
Strategy

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John heads west to chase Rio Grande turkeys with his long bow! This was John's first turkey hunt of the year, but knocking the dust off would prove to be difficult with how much water was on the ground. John had an odd combination of wet muddy ground and hot 90 degree temperatures that made finding turkeys difficult. After putting several miles on the side by side, the first evening proved to be uneventful.

The scouting mission was not a complete failure though. Two other hunters had been on the property for three days before John got there, and while scouting he found a big section of the property that they had not been able to access due to the deep mud. That is the area John chose to focus on the following morning, and he found himself surrounded by gobbles with daylight breaking!

Gone To The Dogs – With MULTIPURPOSE Hounds

Dogs
Strategy

Spring has sprung across the podcast sphere and the boys have moved the Gone To The Dogs operation to the front porch where the air is fresh and the conversation flows a little more freely.

This episode will be Corey’s last for awhile as he and his wife Kayla welcome their second child, another girl, into the Gruver household.  It could happen at any time. It’s an exciting time for sure and one that will demand a little more of Corey’s attention than usual.  He’ll rejoin the show as soon as things settle down a bit over there in Greenville, PA.

In this parting episode, the discussion moves to the winners of the UKC Tournament of Champions briefly before plunging headlong into the interesting realm of multi-purpose hounds.  The boys explore every conceivable application of the term from competition versus pleasure dogs to targeting multi-species with the same breed and virtually everything in between.  Imagine a dog that you can leave the porch and with which you can catch anything from a gray squirrel to a big ole stinking bear before the sun sets and turn around and hunt nocturnal furbearers with until the first gray streaks of dawn!  Now that’s what we’re talkin’ about!  Pull up a rocker.  Things are finna start.

This week Mark covers what you can be doing right now to prep and scout deer for early season and rut hunting.  Changes on the landscape, food plots and agriculture crops should be assessed to determine how deer will use them this year.  Especially, when you can identify "deer magnet" sites that other hunters will overlook.  Like a clear cut.

Mature bucks are hiding out in tight core areas.  Locate now to help reduce pressure during mid to late summer.  Bucks will remain in these core areas up until the pre-rut.  Locating pregnant doe group bedding now will improve your rut hunting.

On this episode I have a great conversation about an incredible run of three turkeys in three hunts on one piece of property, but there is a fun twist. This is not your typical super managed farm nor is it in a dynamite area, it's just a humble premission piece. We dive deep into why you need to get more permissions and how to do that. Topics include: bowhinting turkeys, gaining and keeping hunting permission, call and setup strategy, being able to focus on the goal rather than the work and why it's absolutely worth it to work on getting new places to hunt.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch chats with Jared Van Hees.  Jared is the host of the Habitat Podcast, and he and Mitch discuss the journey of the show as well as Jared's land purchasing and managing.  Jared has acquired more knowledge in this time than most will in a lifetime through hard work and networking from a diverse group of habitat managers.  As we reflect back on this process, we discuss a few obstacles that folks newer to the world of habitat management may face.

Goal orientation is of utmost importance. In fact, being oddly specific with goals will help guide the land purchasing and managing journey the best.  Oftentimes, having someone to help you along the way without the emotion of a large land purchase is well worth the investment.  They can also steer you away from bad decisions that can change the course of a property for a lifetime, such as timber cutting.  Managing timber harvests with professionals is extremely important for your habitat and hunting goals, as well as financial income for a property.  We navigate this discussion through Jared's current view of his two newest properties in Michigan - one of the most relatable deer hunting states to Pennsylvania!

We have a very important episode this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. At the end of march, the governor of Oklahoma signed the "License Modernization Act."  This legislation drastically changes the current license structure for the state and is set to go into effect this summer. This act combines current licenses, simplifies many, and raises some costs. One change that is sure to strike up some hot conversations is how the non resident deer license has almost doubled! John walks through the act and talks about the good and the bad of what is about to take place.

This episode isn't all legislative talk however. John also talks about his recent hog hunt with the boys from up north. Two Michiganders and one Ohio native make the trek to Oklahoma to help John and his family with their hog problem, and do a pretty dang good job of it!

Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Hunting Forums, Netflix, you name it! Across all platforms somebody's got something to say, a bone to pick, or a cool picture to remind you why their gear is better than whatever you've got, and your way of doing things isn't great. It wears on a person after a while and sometimes can make it tough to figure out which way is up.

That's the core focus of this week's episode as Pierce sits down with his good buddy, Gus Merwin, to take a step back and do a little analysis of hunting culture and the messages we're sent by outdoor brands, and more importantly, that we're sending to each other. Gus is a Wisconsin native and avid outdoorsman, now working in the marketing space. The guys discuss allegiances to brands, the messages various marketing campaigns send to us, impacts of social media on outdoor trends and schools of thought, and how those can be a really good thing, or maybe a bad thing. The core message of their chat is that we're all in this together, not everything is better or worse than the next thing, and we should all do our part to be conscious of who, how, and what we represent as members of the outdoor community. Enjoy!

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick tells the tale of 4 fellow podcasters meeting in SE Oklahoma

coolers, the short 4 day adventure came with just as many stories, as it did pounds of meat. So
buckle up for some storytelling and maybe a few pointers on DIY pork processing on this
episode of Huntavore.

Three Northwoods boys; Nate Rozeveld, Andrew Muntz, and Nick Otto go on a hunting trip to
Oklahoma to hunt wild hogs. They join John Hudspeth of the Oklahoma Outdoorsman podcast
on his family ranch, where hogs have been causing issues. The hogs infiltrate the cattle
feeders, push calves off the feeders, root in open grass areas, and compete with deer for
feeders. The group goes on blind hunts and uses thermal scopes to track and shoot the hogs.
They successfully harvest several hogs, but also experience some missed shots and wounded
hogs. Overall, the trip is a mix of adventure, camaraderie, and the pursuit of turning unwanted
hogs into food.

The second half of the show focuses on the process of transporting and processing pigs after a
hunting trip. Discussing the equipment used, such as a Sawzall and boning knives, and the
steps taken to field dress and cool the pigs. Also talk about breaking down the pigs into quarters
and storing them in coolers with ice. Nick shares his plans for using the different cuts of meat,

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Travis Coulter of Kentucky shares a story about his father and a big velvet buck. The underlying topic of this episode is alcoholism and how it destroyed the life of a fellow hunter. Travis talks about going hunting with his father when he was a youngster until his drinking got so bad that his uncle had to step in and put him under his wing. Both Travis's uncle and father played their role building an outdoor foundation for Travis. Fast forward to 2019, alcohol finally caught up with his father and he suffered a major heart attack he was unable to recover from. The next year Travis bought a farm. And under a huge oak tree in the middle of an open field, Travis placed his fathers ashes along with a wooden cross.

2021 came and Travis decided to place an extension ladder in that oak tree that he planned to saddle hunt out of. On opening day, September 5th, Travis connected on a big velvet buck from that tree. He's convinced his father was there the whole time and helped him seal the deal on this buck!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Jake Ehlinger (Habitat Solutions 360) discuss burning, observation, landscape design, and deer socialization. Jake and Jon discuss working on a hunting property all the time and the approach to putting pressure on the property and the impact it has and the way to approach improvements all the time on the landscape.

Jake explains the importance of bedding areas, timber stand improvement, rotations of change, early succession, travel corridors, licking branches as he details his own property. Jake explains an observation treestand setup that has given him key information to witness how the deer use his property. Jake discusses how deer remain spaced out on a property and how he can identify individual deer and deer groups. Jake explains with his known setups and bedding areas how to create more predictable deer activity and travel throughout his property.

Jake explains the importance of cover and how food relates to cover and the ideal setup to ensure deer are using travel corridors across the property. Jake discusses how deer relate to each other and the relationships that are present every day that we need to be keen on to better understand deer usage. Jon explains cutting bedding areas to manipulate wind patterns for better movement. Jake explains how deer use wind to support movement and how that might change in pressured hunting areas.

Jake and Jon explain how to build bedding areas and how to stack more deer in bedding areas and develop better cover. Both have further discussions around equipment to build bedding areas. Jake explains observations around buck behavior, individual activities, breakup periods, and how mature deer act during the hunting season.

Jake and Jon discuss the importance of starting with building habitat as a foundation to make a change. Jake discusses the experience of hunting, hunting pressure, gun season, and how to account for hunting pressure when developing a hunting property. Jake explains changes on his personal hunting property that connects food plots and travel corridors.

"What Would You Do?" with Matt Streim

Turkey
Strategy
Public Land

Only one week to go! At long last, turkey season is nearly here and that means early mornings, the sweet smell of spring air, gobbling turkeys, and for many of us, a good bit of confusion to go along with it. Turkeys do weird things every year and many of us will find ourselves scratching our heads and texting a buddy for advice when the birds don't cooperate.

This week, we're hoping to save you a few of those texts as Pierce hops on the line with Matt Streim from Weathered Oaks Game Calls, to answer the age old question: "What would you do?" The guys kick things off by going over the various sounds that turkeys make, how they interpret them, and then run through a whole mess of scenarios that many of us will find ourselves in throughout the coming weeks, and break down how they'd set up, call, and think about each one. It's a fun episode with a lot of great tips that we're sure you'll be able to put to use this Spring.

Follow along with Matt's spring @weatheredoaksgamecalls on Facebook & Instagram, and visit www.weatheredoaksgamecalls.com to get one of his calls for yourself!
