Gear

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Deals Series on The Hunting Gear Podcast, Camron talks with Mike from HECS to discuss one of the most unique hunting products on the market.  HECS makes hunting clothing that is designed to block your bioelectric signature, which helps keep you concealed from animals.

Mike is the owner and founder of HECS and does an amazing job explaining how animals use electromagnetic patterns to aid in their survival, and how HECS prevents them from being able to detect a human's bioelectric signature.  This is one product that I'll have to put to the test this season!

How to Plan a Western Hunt

Bowhunting

Elk

On this episode of GOHUNT’s  Western Rookie Podcast, Brian shares how to plan a western hunt by walking through an example mule deer hunt step-by-step!

Hunting the west can be a little confusing, especially for first time western big game hunters – each state has a different tag application process, you’ll find some people saying an area is great while others say it’s the worst place ever, and even once you do pick a unit you still have to find a place to actually hunt and make a game plan. In this episode, Brian breaks down planning a rifle mule deer hunt step by step from picking a state all the way to picking an opening day glassing point and hunting plan. If you are just getting into western hunting, this is the episode for you!

A Pre Hog Hunt Podcast

Strategy

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by fellow Sportsmens Empire podcast hosts Nick Otto and Nate Rozeveld. This podcast was recorded as Nick and Nate were driving down from Michigan to Oklahoma for a few days of exciting hog hunting action. The Michiganders were loaded down with firepower and coolers and ready to take on whatever may come their way. Nick was able to come down and hunt with John in 2023, but this was Nate's first trip down to hunt hogs.

The guys talk about some of the stereotypes around hogs like the crazy population numbers and how tough the animals are. They also have a discussion about different firearms and calibers that are used to hunt wild pigs. Nick voices his goal of changing the negative perception hogs have at the dinner table, and vows to change the minds of Oklahomas and others about what a great gift these tasty creatures can be if taken advantage of.

Don't forget to check out Nick (The Huntavore) and Nates (Michigan WIld) podcasts also available on the Sportsmens Empire Podcast Network!

Gone To The Dogs - Hot Stove Vol. 4

Dogs

The boys are baking their bones by the stove again in this episode that covers everything from cross-bred bulldogs to the UKC Tournament of Champions.

Steve is on the road for a couple of weeks to New Jersey for family time and some fly fishing.  The only dogs he’ll see is the daughter’s hound/pit bull mix and the family Dachshund Louie who accompanies Ella everywhere.  But the combined efforts of Ma Bell and Al Gore provide the opportunity to keep Gone To The Dogs on schedule while on the long and winding road.

The boys discuss the format, breed breakdowns and the ambiance that makes the TOC the premier coonhound event that it is, an event that boasts a purse of $250,000 distributed among winners at the finals held on the weekend following the airing of this episode.  The overall winner captures $50 grand!  Who would have thunk it?

Things get interesting, even humorous, when the boys throw another chunk in the stove to discuss recent posts on the Coon Hunting Conversations Facebook group page.  Moving stud dogs around the country, deep-and-lonely dogs being born that way or manmade and what is seemingly causing smaller heads in some coonhounds.  It’s all here and as the cliched phrase admonishes, “You won’t want to miss this one.”  Heck, we don’t want you to miss any of them.   Give that log a little more air, son.

This week Mark discusses how many Toms can be taken off your land to maintain a sustainable population.  Even if you are not doing much land management, you probably would like an opportunity to kill a bird annually.  Over harvesting is the fast track for a declining population.

Right now, the South has heated turkey issues in every state.  Some hunters are openly against data collected from biologists and researchers while others are pushing for new regulations to better conserve the game bird for future generations.  Something has to give and there are many parallels with whitetail conservation changes in the 1980s and 90s.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan chats with Zach Gregory of Michigan about his love for hunting public land. Zach talks about growing up in a family that only hunted during "deer camp". It just so happened that "deer camp" never resulted in any deer, it was more or less a social event. Over the course of 15 years Zach had never shot a deer during "deer camp". So one season he had enough and decided to start hunting public. The first season he went to hunt public with a ladder stand , and although he tagged out, his gut told him there was something more.  As many of you know and depending on where you live, hunting public land comes with its own set of challenges. This is Zach's story, ENJOY & SHARE!

Food Plot Fertility: Choose Amendments Wisely

Bowhunting
Whitetail

Habitat

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch continues his food plot planning conversation from the previous week.  Mitch's career as a full time agronomist has him assisting in row crop management across eastern Pennsylvania.  This includes making soil fertility decisions to maximize crop yield and farm profitability.  The planning that occurs on farm operations translates to our food plotting - plan ahead for success and use the correct tools for the job at hand.

One of the most frustrating things Mitch comes across in the world of food plotting is the array of recommendations produced by food plot companies to consumers.  Often, the products and practices recommended may not be appropriate for your specific food plot scenario.  What's worse is the lack of context behind a recommendation that leads to overspending, and never properly addressing soil needs for quality food plots.  Mitch addresses a basic soil test, and provides information behind lime and fertilizer.  The motto behind this episode, "Just because the product bag has a big buck on it, doesn't mean it's the right product for your soil!"

In this episode co-hosts Steve Fielder and Corey Gruver are joined by coon hunter, trainer and handler Mark Miller of Taylorsville, North Carolina.   Miller recently completed the Holy Grail of coon hunting, the United Kennel Club Grand Nite Champion title with a Plott dog co-owned by Steve and himself, Bear Pen Fever.

The trio drill down into Fever’s success story discussing the young hound’s progression from a five-month-old puppy to reaching the pinnacle in competition hunting at less than two and one-half years old.

Corey leads the interview leaving few stones unturned in terms of exactly what’s involved in achieving the Grand Nite Champion and other UKC titles.  Fever currently holds titles in Field Trials, Water Races, Nite Hunting, Hunt Tests and Bench Showing in UKC as well as Nite Hunting in Professional Kennel Club events.   The expense, the determination, the challenges and the setbacks are all fair game.  Of particular interest to listeners will be the reasons a confirmed, highly successful Treeing Walker fancier would embark on the arduous journey with a Plott of all available breeds.  Steve wades the murky waters of why Plott hunters may be more prone to breed to dogs in their own backyards.   You expect dog talk at its finest on the Gone To The Dogs Podcast and there’s plenty to enjoy in this episode.

Dan and Austin have hunted a variety of species together over the years but the two sit down to discuss their current plans as well as the items they haven’t checked off the list for their trip to Alaska this fall. Alaska is at the top of both Dan and Austin’s bucket list and tho they are both excited, the prospect of hunting Alaska’s backcountry can be intimidating. With most of the trip planned, Dan and Austin share their expectations for the hunt as well as the hesitations with both predators and preparedness.

Navigating Land Consultants

Bowhunting

Strategy

Hiring the right land and wildlife consultant can make a monumental impact on your property.  But if you make a bad hire, you may end up with detrimental ideas and waste of funds.  There is quite a bit of parody in the space and you should do your homework to secure the right fit for your specific needs.  Who has real experience in your region and who is simply regurgitating buzz words from social media.

Should you hire a national consultant or stay localized?  Land, just like any form of real estate, will be the largest purchase for most people and it should be treated like an investment.  I cover many ways to secure someone that will be most suitable for your goals.  Just because a consultant has name recognition, doesn't mean that they won't "phone in" a canned report which I have personally seen.

Freezer Inventory and Consolidation

Big Game

In this episode of Huntavore, Nick is on a wild ride of life, work, and family. Spring Break is around the corner, and plans to put more pork away is coming up fast. For many of us who have spring hunts and future bounty to store, consolidating and organizing our freezers is a must. Is it by species, or is it muscle specific? How to handle odd shaped cuts? Can I make accessing specific pieces easier? These are all questions that are covered on this episode of Huntavore.

After a winter’s worth of rummaging, Nick’s freezers are in disarray. Needing some organization and some consolidation as his bounty is between 3 freezers. To the average hunter this may not be the most fun topic, but to anyone who puts multiple animals up each year, having a system to organize your wildgame is pretty important. Nick is also going to be adding more wild pork so bringing inventory from 3 freezers into 2 is needed to make room. Full freezers are cold freezers, being more efficient at keeping temps low and in turn keeping meat frozen solid. Batch cooking is also a great way to put odd cuts like shanks and shoulders into uniform packaging. Nick made a large batch of barbacoa and carnitas just to freeze into vac bags. Nothing is better than a thaw cook and serve meal with wild game.

The answer... he went mobile. This story, like many, involves not only a change in gear but a complete change in strategy. Join us as we break down his hunting journey. Enjoy and share!

Now is the time to be fine tuning your public hunting "spots", with the intent to increase your efficiency in the fall. How can one close the deal on a mature buck in October instead of waiting until November? With no green up yet to cover those scrapes, rubs, and beds, it is infinitely easier to identify areas of key deer movement and identify set ups that are closer to core mature buck areas. In this episode, Jacob shares what he found in his own efforts to find the spot within the spot in a public land big woods hunting area that has produced well for him in the past.

Happy Easter everyone! We hope you are able to enjoy time with family this week, and slow down to celebrate the gift we've received through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ's death. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodman, Mitch is gearing up for spring food plots, specifically clover. Clover is one of the most popular food plots in the world of whitetails, and now is the time to get them started on a positive note.

We begin with discussing frost seeding methods and timing - you may still have an opportunity to frost seed in the next few days! We discuss the proper timing for spring planting, weed management, herbicides and use rates, to mow or not to mow, seed blends, established clover maintenance and top dressing fertilizer. The first 30 days of establishment are crucial for longevity of clover stands. Get the basics right to enjoy a quality food plot this year!

GONE TO THE DOGS - HOT STOVE VOL. 3

Dogs

In this episode Steve and Corey put on their legislative caps and address a piece of current legislation in the State of Pennsylvania that portents big problems for the dog hunter.  The bill comes under the umbrella of anti-trespass legislation and provides exorbitant penalties for hunting dogs and their owners that find themselves afoul of the provisions of the bill, whether advertently or not.   The boys hash out the bill and provide information for hunters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere that want to let their voices be heard before the bill reaches the dangerous environs of the Senate floor.

The conversation takes on a more pleasant vibe as the boys cover the oldest and one of the most-popular breeds of trail and tree hounds, the American Black and Tan Coonhound.  The boys’ love for history is evident as they discuss early history, early founders and a long line of movers and shakers, human and canine, that have played such an important role in the breed’s seemingly timeless reign of popularity.   If you like black dogs, or if you just like to look back over the many years of our tree hound sport, this is a good one for you.  Them ole black dawgs!

This week, Pierce flies solo and breaks down the tactics he uses when guiding in the Driftess region, specifically when the trout are even spookier than usual! He talks through a trout's senses and what causes them to be so spooky under these conditions, what ideal conditions are, how to approach fish, how to build a stealthy leader, tips for casting success, what bugs are hatching and the flies you need in your box, and lots more in this week's episode! This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Tyrell Roy is back to talk about his Kansas public land whitetail adventure. Tyrell is a very accomplished whitetail hunter, and consistently kills mature bucks on his family farm and permission properties in northern Oklahoma. Like many of us whitetail nuts though, he was looking for the next challenge. He found all the challenge he could handle a little ways north on Kansas public land.

After not drawing a tag in 2022, Tyrell set his sights on 2023 and was determined to make it happen. After the buck he scouted all summer was taken by another hunter on opening day, it was back to square one with the season already under way. With Kansas's recent trail camera ban, Tyrell had no other way to scout than boots on the ground and dirt on the tires. It took all season, but after a tip from a friend he was able to make a play on a great whitetail buck. If you have ever wanted to chase western whitetails, this is an episode you need to hear!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch catches up with bowhunter Matt Beisswanger.  Mitch and Matt were able to connect at a local event recently leading to Matt coming on and sharing his 2023 hunting season  Matt was able to harvest 7 deer with his recurve bow, including two bucks - one in Pennsylvania and one in Illinois. In order to tell this story, we have to go back a few years... almost 20!

Matt progressed as a bowhunter throughout his life until he picked up traditional archery in 2006.  He enjoyed shooting and did some hunting with the Bear bow, but never dove fully into traditional archery.  Over nearly the next two decades Matt bounced back and forth between compound and recurve, and within the last 5 seasons has now been keeping the compound at home.  This journey leads us to the season build up, where Matt had four years of history with a 180"+ Illinois buck that fell on October 30th to Matt's recurve at twelve yards!  Regardless of size or weapon, Matt's message is the same - keep the hunt fun and chase the thrill!
