Wing and Tail Boys

Opening Day

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Public Land
Strategy

The Wing and Tail Boys are back with their 6th episode to break down what their typical day in the woods looks like, starting with the night-before-preparation. They begin the episode with a shoutout to their friend Kevin Creeley who found success in his opening weekend hunt. With his harvest, he’s on the board with the first leg of the #TriStateTrifecta down. Congrats big dawg!! The boys then go on to discuss what their last week has looked like leading up to New Jersey’s opening weekend. Chris is finishing up wrapping his gear in cloth tape to help silence it up. Angelo is primed and ready to try out some new gear upgrades including his first hunt with a camera.

After the hosts catch you up on their week past, they start to break down what a typical day of hunting looks like starting with the physical and mental prep the night prior. Chris follows a very rigid scent-control regiment including the use of scent detergents, scent covers, and ozone generators. Angelo on the other hand doesn’t utilize any scent control at all. Instead, he prefers to use the wind to his advantage when both hanging a stand and spot-and-stalking. What they both agree on, however, is the mental preparation leading into the hunt. The boys go on to break down their entire process including the walk in, scouting, changing up the plan, climbing, hanging their sets, and setting up their cameras.

Angelo and Chris continue to discuss some things they like to do in the stand to pass the time as the hours progress. Chris touches on how he uses the camera as a tool in the tree both to remain occupied as well as a tool to see what’s going on without having to use his eyes. The boys also talk about the camaraderie of hunting and different ways to share the moment. For most of us, the people you first call from the tree are the most important to you whether it be your mother or father, brother or sister, or your husband or wife. Lastly, the Boys make sure to give a BIG shoutout to their wives for their support.

Alaska Recap

Bowhunting

Moose

Predator Hunting

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman, Dan and his hunting buddies do a full breakdown of the last 11 days pursuing moose, caribou, bear and wolves in Alaska’s interior.

Dan along with several buddies attempted to tackle their first ever interior hunt in Alaska for almost 2 weeks. This episode is full of day to day encounters with animals they had never seen before. Between fresh wolf tracks following them out of an abandoned mining trail to getting checked by Alaskan Fish and Game agents and even a perceived grizzly charge this episode is all about their crazy trip and the opportunities they never thought would happen. Dan, Austin and Jason have been hunting together for several years but when they decided to take on one of the most sought after hunts in North America they had no idea what to expect or what they’d be getting into. Between being surrounded by the 40 Mile Caribou herd and hanging out on the side of the road watching the Northern Lights dancing overhead this will be a trip they never forget. With a few tags still in their pockets the question isn’t if they will be back but how soon they will make it happen again.

A long awaited and much anticipated episode this week as John prepares to head north to Kansas to chase open plains whitetails with his muzzleloaders. John starts the episode off by talking about more local things like the deer he is seeing on the ranch and an exciting new property he picked up in Texas. After running cameras for several weeks, the outlook is not looking great so far, and if he had to choose a spot to hunt tomorrow, he would probably find himself hunting public ground.

After the local stuff, John goes outbound and talks about his upcoming trip to Kansas, which if you are listening to this episode when it comes out, he is already there. John discusses his camp set up, his scouting, and what he expects to encounter. John did not have a chance to make a scouting trip over the summer, so he is going in completely blind. Though he did not get to put boots on the ground, he has spent countless hours e-scouting ever since he put in for the tag back in April. He feels confident that with a little gravel under the tire and some dirt under his boots, he can find a spot to take down a big bodied Kansas buck.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are back with part 2 of our conversation with Cole Seitzinger in what we are calling a "Dream Season".  If you missed last week, Cole shares his 2023 PA P&Y buck kill and the obstacles experienced along the way.  It was 8 days later Cole was able to lay hands on his target 150 class buck in the Prairie State.  However, the theme of overcoming obstacles remains in place!

Despite initial setbacks and doubts, Cole's wife encouraged him to go on his Illinois hunt after a 12-year hiatus, arriving a day late due to family obligations.  Cole bounced around the farm until landing in a tree that proved to be successful.  Initially, the wind kept him from hunting his primary target location.  The tree he picked was a good distance away but allowed him to observe from a distance.  The power of November had his target buck on his feet, which just happened to cruise by his tree in bow range mid-morning. Lots of lessons learned from stand selection and shot placement, to tracking, trusting your instincts, and sharing memories made in the field.

In this the first of the 2024 Autumn Oaks recordings, Steve is joined by Texan Sid Underwood and by Land of Lincoln coon hunter Doug Crawley.  The conversations were recorded live in media center of the Kuhlman Center, headquarters for the Event Where History Is Made.

Underwood had the distinction of being the last Bench Show Judge to judge Autumn Oaks in its entirety as a single judge.  The event now employs two judges and as many rings in the three-day event.   The old friends discuss many aspects of Autumn Oaks, of coon hunting in the State of Texas and their association as co-employees of the Field Operations Department of UKC when Steve was there.

Crawley set a milestone in the UKC World Coonhound Championship that can never be replicated.  His Treeing Walker Coonhound Crawley’s Louise became the first-ever female hound to win the UKC World Nite Hunt Championship.  Louise accomplished the feat in 1989, thirty-five years ago.  Steve and Doug take a nostalgic trip back to Montgomery City, Missouri, then headquarters of John and Linda Wick’s Wick Outdoor Works supply business, including accounts of the hunt that took place in the midst of a hurricane.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick calls up good friend Nate Roseveld of the Michigan Wild Podcast.  Nate recently dug in deep to the new Michigan deer hunting regulations on one of his episodes, and Nick wanted to get a better understanding.  From the looks of things, the DNR is in need of some meat hunters.  Does are up, harvests are down, its time we fill those freezers once again, on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick and Nate Roosevelt discuss the upcoming hunting season in Michigan and the recent changes in legislation regarding deer hunting. They talk about the importance of shooting does to manage the deer population and the challenges of getting hunters to embrace doe harvest. They also touch on the concerns about the National Resources Commission making decisions that could impact the deer herd and the need for hunters to adapt to these changes. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for education, communication, and collaboration among hunters to ensure the sustainability of the deer population. In this conversation, Nate and Nick discuss the importance of shooting does in deer hunting. They emphasize the need to make killing does cool again and encourage young hunters to start with shooting does. They also discuss the challenges of managing the deer population, including the impact of CWD and the need for testing before donating deer meat. The conversation concludes with a discussion about their recent pig hunting trip and plans for cooking and sharing the wild pork.

Takeaways:

  • Shooting does is important for managing the deer population and maintaining a healthy balance.
  • There is a need for education and communication to encourage hunters to embrace doe harvest.
  • The National Resources Commission has the power to make decisions that impact the deer herd, and hunters need to adapt to these changes.
  • Collaboration among hunters is crucial for the sustainability of the deer population and the future of hunting. Encouraging young hunters to start with shooting does can help them learn and appreciate the importance of managing the deer population.
  • Killing does is just as important and meaningful as shooting bucks, and it can contribute to the overall health of the deer herd.
  • Testing for CWD and the challenges of donating deer meat can create obstacles in managing the deer population.
  • Pig hunting can be a fun and effective way to control the pig population and provide a bounty of wild pork.
  • Taking advantage of opportunities to hunt and harvest does can help address the overpopulation of deer in certain areas.
