Where are We Going: Arrows, TAC & More

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy
Public Land

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, Jim D’Agostino and I dive into a laid-back conversation about archery, upcoming events, and the importance of just having fun with the process. We talk about how shooting outdoors provides better practice than indoor ranges, the competitive madness of Total Archery Challenge (TAC) registration, and the logistics of planning an event—from Airbnb setups to coordinating schedules. Beyond the logistics, we break down how different arrows serve different purposes, and how tinkering with arrow setups can lead to noticeable performance improvements. Whether it's weight distribution, smaller veins for wind resistance, or finding the right balance between speed and penetration, there’s always something new to learn in archery.

But this episode isn’t just about gear—it’s about the experience and friendships built through archery. We discuss how community events like TAC bring people together, why spending time shooting bows is therapeutic, and how the archery community continues to evolve. We’re looking forward to more gear discussions in future episodes, but for now, this one’s all about keeping things light, having fun, and remembering not to take life too seriously. Tune in for a relaxed, gear-filled conversation that’ll get you pumped for your next shoot!

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Jim! Stay tuned, stay safe, and Antler Up!

Pennsylvania Woodsman

Adjusting Strategy to a Tiny Deer Hunting Property

Habitat
Whitetail
Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch is hashing out a plan in his mind to improve one of his small hunting properties.  As usual, it starts with a vision and leads to lots of work.  After finding some success in the past on a 2 acre archery hunting property, new ideas have come into mind to make it better.  While hunting the property over the years, the deer have taught Mitch how to better manipulate his hunting strategy.  This involves changing a food plot shape and size, moving a stand location, modifying deer trails, and improving the cover and bedding.  These changes may not create large improvements, but we'll take anything possible in the hunter's favor.  And as always, these changes are catered to hopefully hunting the property smarter.  That means concentrating on specific times of year with good winds and fool-proof access!  Hopefully you can relate to some of these changes for your hunting season.

There are tradeoffs when shooting a fixed blade broadhead with slighter blood trails and lesser wound channels. But fixed blade broadheads are known for handling bone, remaining durable, and solid penetration. Can mechanical broadheads bust through a mature buck shoulder? And, if so, how do well do mechanical broadheads survive the "trauma" of hitting a shoulder? In today's episode, Jacob shares the results from his recent field test where he shot the 125 grain versions of the Beast broadhead, a Rage Hypodermic broadhead, a Sevr 2.0 broadhead, and a T2 broadhead into 4 separate mature buck shoulders. The results were interesting. Thanks for listening. Find Hunt Detail on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/hunt_detail/ or YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HuntDetail

The Neighbor Shot my 200in Buck

Bowhunting

On this episode of Michigan Wild we are coming in from the Chilli Buck Lounge over at The Fall Podcast's studio. Nate was able to sit down with Arron Bliese and Russ Papke and dive into the final chapter of a 200+ inch buck. (Mr Krabs) This was a deer Nate had some history with and actually named the deer when he was 2.5 years old in 2021. Nate even sent an arrow at Mr Krabs in 2023. Unfortunately for Nate, Russ didn't miss this fall. He closed the chapter on Mr Krabs and shot an absolute mega giant!

Russ's story for how his fall played out is wild. The ups and downs Russ went through leading up to the moment he saw the deer does bring life into perspective. Life is unpredictable, much like November, and fortunately for Russ he listened to his wife and still spent some time in the woods. Shooting a 200+ inch buck in Michigan is incredible, it's a testament to hunters passing (or missing) deer and striving for a higher age structure across the landscape.

In today's episode I have my good buddy Adam Weaver on. Adam is one of the best turkey hunters I know. I've been turkey hunting with Adam for a little over 4 years and he has taught me a ton about turkey behavior, calling and turkey hunting in general. Today Adam and I discussed a multitude of things. We talk a lot about pre-season scouting and what that looks like for him. We discuss locating gobblers, "figuring out what they're doing" in the week leading up to the season, habitat types and types of sign to look for and much more. The main focus of today's episode is a brief overview on tactics. We talk about once you locate that gobbler on opening day, what you actually have to do to close the deal. Adam talks about calling conservatively and utilizing woodsmanship to attain success rather than hammering on a box call or mouth call.. and what that looks like for him. Overall an awesome episode about turkey hunting, and I hope you all take something away from this. Thanks for listening!

Tips & Tricks for Switchgrass and Annual Screen Establishment

Whitetail
Habitat
Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is back in his element consulting on crops.  This week's crop is a hot topic in the wildlife habitat and management world - switchgrass.  Switchgrass use has grown in popularity for habitat improvement as well as food plot screening.  While it's extremely effective when established, it's slightly more difficult to get started when compared to your fast growing annual food plots.  Mitch breaks down a few details and experiences he has had that hopefully you can implement into your switchgrass planting.

In addition to switchgrass, the use of annual screening such as egyptian wheat has increased.  While it's simpler to establish than switchgrass, there are a few things to consider when planting to ensure maximum potential.  In both crops, Mitch breaks down weed management, seed bed preparation, and timing of planting.  You'll hear information about herbicides that can be effective while aiding in your establishment, as well as the timing when they should be applied.  Start planning your successful plantings now - shooting from the hip this spring may result in frustration!

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, I sit down with Tom Fleisher (@PhillyBurbsBowHunter) to talk about the challenges and rewards of suburban hunting in Pennsylvania. Tom shares how his early hunting experiences shaped his passion for the sport and how Pennsylvania’s 5C area offers unique opportunities for deer hunters. We dive into the importance of strategic planning, patience, and responsible deer management in urban and suburban settings, where shot placement and ethical hunting are critical. Tom also highlights the value of building relationships with property owners, navigating new state game lands, and fostering a sense of community through his Philly Burbs Bow Hunters page.

Beyond hunting strategy, we discuss the role of technology—like cell cameras, which can be both an asset and a distraction—along with how harsh winters impact deer movement. Tom also shares insights on hunting gear, from the benefits of heavy arrows for better penetration to the importance of constant tinkering for improved performance. If you’re interested in suburban hunting, refining your setup, or just looking to hear great hunting stories, this episode is packed with valuable insights!

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Tom Fleisher! Stay tuned, stay safe, and Antler Up!
