Planning a Great Fishing Trip

Fishing
Public Land
Strategy

June is here and hopefully by now that means you've already dusted off the rods, reels, and tackle boxes, greased up the axles on the boat trailer and charged up the batteries. If you haven't we need to have a serious talk, and if you have, what did you forget on that first trip of the year? What did you have to pop into a bait shop for? What could you have just simply done better? As fun as they can be, fishing trips can also be a source of nightmares if not done properly. That's why this week, we're talking all about how to plan and prepare for a fishing trip!

This week, Andrew Wolfe returns to the show after a big tournament up in Door County and Pierce is also coming off of a fishing trip not too far away from where Andrew was. After a week of chasing big smallies, the guys thought it would be a good idea to share their tips on how they prepare for a fishing trip. In this episode, the guys break down how they choose a place to go whether it be based off of a species, area, skill they hope to hone, or historic body of water, and then break down how they use their resources to figure out what the fish are doing before they go. Then the guys talk about gear essentials, what they never leave home without, what's overrated, and finally, how they prepare mentally for a trip. This episode is a fun one with plenty of entertaining tangents, but even more good info. Enjoy!

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore is joined by guest Ty Forbes out of Massachusetts. In this episode, join Jeremy and Ty for an in-depth conversation on hunting strategies and personal growth. Ty opens up about the profound impact that reconnecting with his father has had on his hunting journey and life. The episode delves into how observing and learning from experienced mentors have been instrumental to Ty’s success.

Listeners will gain valuable tips on securing permission to hunt on private properties, especially in suburban areas. Ty shares his aggressive hunting strategies, such as locating bedding areas and making bold moves in the field. He emphasizes the importance of respecting other hunters’ territories to foster a cooperative hunting community.

Ty also highlights the critical role of early scouting and setup, particularly during January and February, to prepare for a successful deer hunting season. He discusses the importance of identifying prime locations by looking for deer sign, freshening scrapes, and pinpointing bedding areas. Ty’s advice on moving slowly and quietly to avoid spooking deer and the importance of taking calculated risks for greater success is invaluable.

Beyond the technical aspects of hunting, Ty and Jeremy celebrate the joy of creating memories and enjoying the experience, regardless of the size of the deer harvested. This episode is for hunters of all levels, blending practical advice with the deeper, more personal aspects of the hunting tradition.

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Ty on today's episode of the Antler Up Podcast.

Both Mitch and Jason harvested a turkey in PA on the first two days of the season. From there, each of them were able to travel all throughout the state of PA and find more turkeys. We discuss how the location, hunting pressures, and time of season all influenced the decisions made during the hunt. The guys refer to some of the different turkey calls that Jason makes used in these hunts. Jason's calls have played a major role in the success in these hunts. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John kicks things off with an exciting announcement he has been keeping secret for almost a year now. After the big unveiling, John moves on to one of the most exciting parts about spring, spring food plots! It was a busy weekend at the ranch as John planted all three of his spring plots for a total of around 5.5 acres. As usual, things didn't go as planned when the local seed store was completely sold out of soybeans which had been his first choice after having such success with them last year. But some quick research and a few questions led him to buying a nice mix comprised of two varieties of cowpeas, millet, soybeans, and okra.

John also ventured into some new territory and planted his very first alfalfa plot. In an area that saw a lot of browse pressure last year, John decided to switch things up and see if alfalfa could outgrow the deers stomachs. He also increased the size of that plot by almost 4 times! Follow along as John walks the listener through his step by step process and points out what he did right and several things he did wrong.

While he was gone, Corey joined the fund-raising ranks with his involvement in a charity called Wags for Kids.  His plan involves raising money for deserving kids needing therapy dogs and such and it produced the idea of a coonhound stud dog auction.   Thirty owners agreed to provide stud service on social media to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to the benefit.  The plan is working great and the boys talk about that in this episode which naturally leads into a much broader discussion of the ins and outs of running a stud dog in today’s tree dog market.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by returning guest Bryan Hale of Elk County Outfitters.  One notable trait of Bryan - the man is a grinder.  He works tirelessly to maintain success at Elk County Outfitters for clients and his team.  So how does Bryan stay sane throughout this process?  That's the beauty of hunting - it's a much greater endeavor than killing.  Comradery and fellowship bring greater reward in the end.

As hunters, it can be very easy to stress ourselves out to fill a tag and meet a certain expectation.  This added stress only takes away from our experience and removes us from the present.  We dive into this topic as it relates to PA elk hunting, then shift to discussing the tag lottery system, and of course some awesome 2023 hunting stories.  Hopefully if you're not applying for PA elk, this episode sways you in the right direction!  Even if it doesn't, it definitely makes you think about slowing down and enjoying the process of hunting!

As quickly as it arrived, turkey season is almost gone! These six weeks never seem to last long enough, even though it might seem like time is dragging when you find yourself sitting in a silent woods, just praying to hear a gobble in your direction. Hopefully none of you found yourselves in that situation (for long at least) this spring, but with one week left to go, it's a sprint to the finish in the turkey woods.

This week, Pierce is joined for a second time by Drew Schleim, host of The Predator Podcast, and although Drew is a big time coyote killer, no turkey is safe from him either! The guys share stories from this spring including an hours-old story of Pierce tagging a bird with minutes to go in his hunt, and Drew helping others fill their tags while also filling multiple tags of his own here in Wisconsin and also South Dakota! Drew shares some stories and lessons learned from his time in South Dakota, how he managed to kill his first two Merriam's turkeys, and also shares some fantastic tips for punching a late season tag here in the badger state. It's a great conversation that will leave you itching to get out in the turkey woods one last time!

Steve perfects certain aspects of the slope that will drive interest throughout the summer. Steve discusses travel corridors and pinch points and the importance during summer scouting.

Steve discusses urinating in scrapes and what he prefers when setting up a mock location. Steve explains the importance of having noticeable scrapes and enhancing the visual aspect of scrapes.

Steve and Jon discuss how deer disperse and understand how deer move around as they transition to hardened antlers. Steve explains the importance of finding low pressure locations and locations that have high interspersion indexes with better habitat.

On this week's episode Mitch is joined by good friend and hunting partner Earl Thomas.  Earl is one of the most passionate turkey hunters Mitch knows, and annually sets out to hunt in multiple states on what has been dubbed the "Redneck Turkey Tour."  Earl has been fortunate to tag a handful of gobblers already this spring and still has a few hunts left.

Every hunter's experiences lead them to hypothesize and act a certain way while pursuing game.  This has led to many coffee shop conversations such as, does weather impact turkey gobbling?  What about the barometer?  Are we hunting spring gobblers in Pennsylvania too late?  While we don't directly answer those questions, Earl's experience is food for thought.  Turkeys are wild animals, and their brains are much different from humans - they are "finicky" birds!  We may never figure out what makes them do what they do, but persistence and determination go a long way.  This is one of the many reasons why Earl is sending pictures of him with turkeys at any given point throughout March, April, or May.  Enjoy the perspective and experience from this wise ol' bird!
