Joining Marcus on the podcast this week is Clint Salisbury. Clint is the Regional Director in Michigan for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The guys kick things off talking about Clint's path that brought him to RMEF and why he always looked at this type of position as a dream job. From there, they spend the rest of the conversation discussing elk in Michigan. Clint gives a good history on the elk herd and how conservation work has been able to restore it to the healthiest that it has been in sometime, if not ever. Drawing an elk tag in Michigan is something most will never get to experience given that only roughly 300 tags are given out each year depending on herd numbers. However, in recent years, those hunters have posted an 80% success rate and with that a part of history in Michigan. Harvesting an elk in Michigan for most is a dream hunt and with the tireless work that volunteers are doing hopefully more get that chance to fulfill that dream.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast we chat with a fairly well known Pennsylvania Native, Cory Gulvas.  For those who do not know, Cory killed the number 2 typical whitetail with his recurve during the 2020 hunting season in Pennsylvania.  Cory is extremely humble and believes there was a lot of luck behind that success story.  However, we believe that luck is something that follows those who prepare well, and Cory is someone who spends countless hours preparing for the upcoming deer season.

We start part one of the conversation by breaking down the progression of Cory's interest in big woods whitetail hunting, going from a compound to a recurve, shed hunting, and his philosophy behind the pursuit of his quarry.  One big lesson to take away in his message, is that the hunt is not about the kill.  In fact, he said he does not overly enjoy killing animals although it is part of the hunt.  Rather, he cherishes the road you take to get there and would rather pursue a mature buck and come home empty handed than kill a younger buck just to fill a tag.  We also chat about calling deer in big woods, shed hunting, and a few other pieces of strategy.  It will leave you ready for more, so be ready for part two next week!

Simply add the state and game animal and you get the sorted information you need, to take to the field.

Kris Chain also offers Season Report for $15 annually, and you can give it a try for free for 2 weeks

https://seasonreport.com/

Kris was able to harvest a bear last year, so Nick takes the opportunity to dive a bit deeper on bear meat. Its richness and moist texture makes bear meat a true eating experience. Kris describes the closest equivalent as a pork like texture, yet fully wild and it's own. Nick got very intrigued as if the bear boudin sausage could be a thing, Kris seemed very excited about the idea. Summer time also seems to be a great time to make a mess of tacos. Kris unpacks his venison or wild boar tacos. His go to is ground meat over shredded. Kris kept it straight forward by seasoning, and browning the meat, but finishes off by adding a ladle of stock to keep the meat moist and add a slight sausiness to the taco meat.

And what goes into establishing a food plot that will attract deer?

This week on The Average Conservationist Podcast, Marcus sits down with Justin Madron. Justin is the owner and founder of 2% Certified Farther Afield Design. The guys cover a lot of ground during their conversation ranging from childhood memories to voting lines and grouse hunting. Growing up in a rural area of West Virginia, the outdoors is all that Justin had to keep himself occupied and from that a love for wild places grew. Justin gives some good examples of how his company is using geospatial data to help a number of different companies and nonprofits alike to further their mission along with explaining the difference between what Farther Afield does and how someone like goHUNT is using their mapping system. This is a great conversation from start to finish!

This week on the Ohio Outdoors podcast, the guys are ready to Send It with the guys down at GoWild!!  Leading up to the first ever Send it Slam, Brayden from GoWild joins us to talk about the event.  Lots of good information about the event as well as what to expect.  Sure to be a good time!

The meat of todays show comes from a sit down the guys had with Wes Adams from SciotoMade in Columbus Ohio.  Wes is an Ohio native that started a store where he designs and produces shirts, hats, wallets, bags, and other unique items.  Much of the inspiration behind his products comes from his love of fly fishing and the outdoors.  Wes is an avid conservationist and devotes a lot of his time to helping clean up rivers and other outdoor areas.

Your hosts have been busy breaking arrows and trying to figure out how archery works prior to the Send it Slam and Archery Hike.  There’s not much more to say about that.

Check out timetogowild.com to find out more about Send it Slam on July 9th!

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with New Mexico mule deer fanatic Marcus Placencia about the challenges of hunting mature mule deer in the deserts of the southwest.

Marcus is a lifelong New Mexico resident that is obsessed with mule deer hunting. Marcus has been chasing animals in “the land of enchantment” since he was 8 years old. His first kill was a cow elk with his bow at age 12 and he’s been hooked on bow hunting ever since. Marcus has recently expanded his mule deer hunting into Arizona and is hopeful to start drawing tags and chasing bucks in many more states. Dan and Marcus discuss the vast differences between hunting whitetails in the midwest and chasing mule deer in the southwest. Dan and Marcus discuss possible hunt swaps between Missouri and New Mexico.

In this podcast Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the importance of understory vegetation management. Tim details a recent client visit and understory strategy he employs to help improve deer use. Tim explains the importance of light and how to manage that across the varying levels of forest infrastructure. Both contributors discuss plants deer eat.

Tim and Jon discuss the process of evaluating the understory and the best perspective to allow the correct amount of light to the forest floor to improve cover and food. Tim discusses his method to evaluate the density of trees and the proper technique to ensure that landowners understand how to look past the number of trees per acre. Jon provides some suggestive basal area measurements that may be helpful for significant understory improvement and regeneration. Tim explains the concerns he dealt with on a client visit and how the client is shifting his focus to improving overstory and understory plants.

Tim explains what to do first before cutting any trees. Both contributors discuss plant use and replacement and the benefits to deer or other animals. Tim discusses the impact of legacy effects from deer and how that can alter the resulting forest. Jon discusses strategy to increase understory value for deer. Tim explains a concept called timber pimping and how not to be taken advantage by someone that may want to devalue your timber.

Summer is a great time to get kids outdoors. The weather is nice, there’s a ton of opportunities, and you don’t have the pressure that comes with tagging a big buck or longbeard. Getting your kids outdoors is extremely rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. Often times, it will seem like a sacrifice to do all the work that comes with bringing kids along. But the investment is well worth it! And with a little planning, patience, and creativity, you can make an investment in them that will pay dividends far into the future.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Max Kulick, an avid outdoorsman who is truly committed to getting his kids outside. Max is an opportunistic hunter, fisherman, forager, and gardener, taking advantage of all that the seasons of Wisconsin allow. He and his wife do a great job of getting their kiddos outside and fostering their connection to the earth and their food. In this episode, the guys talk deer and turkey hunting, plans for the upcoming season, and of course, all that goes into sharing our outdoor heritage with the next generation. Enjoy!

Affordable Once In A Lifetime Hunts

Big Game
Whitetail
Bowhunting

Eric Bonicelli had never done any western big game hunting before he moved to New Mexico. Once he got settled in, he realized he had landed in a sportsman's paradise and immediately began taking advantage of it. He drew a once in a lifetime oryx tag, a barbary sheep tag, an elk tag in one of the state's most coveted units, and several deer tags. New Mexico is one of the few states that does not have a preference point system, and Eric says that is exactly why hunters should be looking into hunting in New Mexico. Sure you may go your entire life without drawing an elk tag in the famous Gila Mountains, but you might also draw it the very first time you try!

If you think this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is only about a single state though, you are greatly mistaken. Eric has also found some amazing international hunts that are much more affordable than most people think. And he throws in some tips and things to watch out for that can raise the price if you aren't careful. He has hunted rivers flowing with ducks in Nicaragua, and bruised his shoulder shooting doves in Argentina, both of which cost him less than a guided midwestern whitetail hunt! If you have a once and a lifetime type hunt on your bucket list, this episode might just help you make that hunt become a reality.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch dives into some season preparation with a bit more philosophy than direct strategy.  As June slips away into the heat of summer, time to prepare for the upcoming archery season is also fading.  Work has taken a significant chunk of Mitch's time but he still managed to help out and share the latest status of food plots at his hunting locations to prepare for this fall.  In addition, he discusses the off-season practice routine he uses to build muscle memory and hone his shot execution this fall.

Lastly, we discuss shot ethics on game and knowing the limits of yourself and your equipment.  Information overload is a real issue for beginners in the outdoors.  While there is a ton of fantastic information available to get people started, it can be easy to take things out of context and have poor experiences.  One such example is shot placement and how that relates between species and the arrow set-ups you use.  This is where philosophy takes over, and even if you're a seasoned veteran we challenge you to reevaluate your shot process and be accountable for every arrow you release!.

It’s officially summer. It’s hot, the woods are thick, and the water is calling your name. But for the die-hard whitetail hunter, the work never stops. It’s time to get boots on the ground for some summer scouting. While fighting ticks, thick vegetation and a three-digit heat index may not sound like a lot of fun, summer scouting can set you up for success this fall, especially if you’re covering unfamiliar ground.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Warbritton from The Hunting Public about how he approaches summer scouting. Aaron and the rest of the THP crew literally make a living by taking big bucks in limited time on highly pressured public land. And as you’ll learn from this episode, a lot of their success can be attributed to scouting, specifically, summer scouting. Aaron doesn’t put as much stock into some of the typical summer scouting tactics like glassing ag fields. Instead, he prefers to jump right into the thick of it and try to find where the bucks are bedding, or will be bedding com hunting season. Tune in to hear how Aaron uses summer scouting to put him and the rest of the THP crew on big bucks come the fall.

Man, we made it!  Triple Digits, the century mark, a milestone where podcasters find that their little project has now become something greater.  On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick celebrates getting to this point, then relieves the amazing weekend up north at Total Archery Challenge; the friends, the fun shots, and the food.  Smoked Shot Shells  were a surprise hit, so we break down this little meat treat.  Nick also hit the foraging gold mine of Golden Oyster Mushrooms.  So I invite you, pour a glass, and celebrate with Nick, on this 100th episode of Huntavore.

First, Nick needs to thank a small village for their involvement in Huntavore.  His wife and kids, Former co-host Dustin, huge encourager Peggy Kline, Dan Johnson and the entire Sportsman’s Empire, all the amazing guests and listeners.  Thank you all.

Total Archery Challenge, Crystal Mountain Michigan was a huge hit.  Like any big event, some hiccups were there, but our experience wasn’t tarnished.  Shooting two days, 4 courses, hiking plenty of miles and floors, making what at first looked like impossible shots.  What a wonderful way to practice long range archery.  One of the dishes that we made was Smoked Shot Shells

Here is the link:

Nick also stumbled upon a stump loaded with Golden Oyster Mushrooms.  His culinary drive was salivating.  First objective was to preserve the bounty.  First was sauté and freeze.  Second was full dehydration.  Incredible how much water is actually in mushrooms, they dried down to almost nothing.

Fishing

This week John and his guest tackle one of the most requested topics of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Bowfishing! Bowfishing started gaining popularity in the late 80's and early 90's, but really took off in the 2000's. Casey Minshew is well known in the trinity river bowfishing circles, and his specialty is large alligator gar. Casey has been called on and acted as a guide by biologist conducting research, and even had the pleasure of taking Tim Wells on an adventure. Though he is highly regarded and respected, he does little guiding and mostly just enjoys bowfishing and the challenges of finding and hauling in giant gar.

On this episode Casey and John spend a little time talking about the gear you need for bowfishing and how it differs from traditional archery equipment. They then spend a little time talking about the difference between bowfishing at night versus the day, and how to locate and shoot fish at night. Then comes Casey's favorite topic, finding and shooting huge alligator gar. Not only does he talk strategy, he also gives a lot of general information about alligator gar and their behavior and habits. If you have ever been interested in bowfishing, you will definitely want to check out this episode. Every time Casey puts his boat in the water, his goal is to find a 7 foot fish!
