Uncut: My 2023 Nebraska Turkey Trip

Big Game
Whitetail

Strategy

John had a heck of a trip to Nebraska to visit his sister and chase Merriam turkeys. On this week's uncut episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John talks about the many times he got caught by gobblers with his pants down, multiple close calls, and how distracting all the deer sign was. It is almost hard to believe he didn't fill his tag after situations like walking up on birds midday, turkeys gobbling when he didn't have his bow, and even calling a long beard to 10 steps! He really has nothing to blame but himself.

Even after all the mishaps, it was still an incredible trip. He got to do a lot of scouting for both turkeys and deer, and got permission on yet another property for this fall. John also got to see the effects of EHD for himself, finding multiple deadheads while walking around scouting. It is truly incredible how diverse whitetails and turkeys are and all the places they can thrive, even when it seems the cards are stacked against them.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re talking all things AI. We discuss several of the concerning questions such as what are the societal impacts, will we lose our jobs to AI, and will AI learn to code itself and take over humanity. The trouble is that we can no longer undo this thing and it’s here to stay. Which AI platform is the scariest one? Part of the problem with this now is that people already believe everything they see, how far will AI twist the truth? There is one silver lining amidst all this AI, tune in to find out what that is.

Now that we’ve terrorized you about the threat of AI, find out how we’re using it. If you’ve never utilized the “ask the community” feature in the GoWild App, this allows you to get answers to a specific question you have about a particular outdoor pursuit. We saw this as an opportunity to integrate our own version of AI, and have begun using and continually refining our own AI-inspired SquatchBot to help you get quick answers to your questions. SquatchBot is learning from the community and from previous posts along with scouring the internet for answers. Find out our goals for it, how it works, and what you can learn from it. We talk about one way specifically how he’s starting to really help members. There are some benefits from SquatchBot that GoWild members just can’t replicate, along with times when humans have the proper answer … and now you can have the best of both worlds!

Want to test him and try it for yourself, jump in the app and ask the community or send SquatchBot a DM!

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

Deer hunting or turkey hunting, what's your favorite? For many of us, deer hunting is our first love. There's nothing like a crisp November morning in the stand, blind, or saddle to get the blood flowing. But for the hunter looking to broaden his horizons, there are tons of opportunities out there. While there are a wide variety of species to chase come fall and winter, there aren't very many seasons open as the temps warm up and the days grow longer. Enter spring turkey hunting. An absolute blast in its own right, turkey hunting is certainly a different ballgame than hunting whitetails. But what if I told you the spring turkey hunting can also make you a better deer hunter?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh and Pierce discuss ways that hunting spring gobblers can help you be a better deer hunter next fall. The guys discuss gear, terrain features, strategy, and talk a little about their upcoming hunt for turkey in WI. Enjoy!

Hunting has a variety of emotions relating to its mixture of being both a science and an art.  Many relate their hunting passion to their career choices.  But is passion the true metric for career decision?  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Eric Lance from the HuntScience Podcast.  Eric is a biologist that consults with landowners privately and also is an associate biology professor.  Eric talks about how his passion for wildlife first drove his interest towards becoming a hunter - not the other way around.  Eric's career experience is a great testimony to learning the influence of our strengths and weaknesses before applying them in our own careers.

This allows us to transition into discussing the current projects Eric is working on.  Eric is well rounded in land, big game, small game, and waterfowl management.  He discusses the nesting success project he is doing with migratory birds and cites numerous examples of sound wildlife management through his own experiences.  Understanding carrying capacity, population dynamics, and the habitat requirements of a species is necessary to interpret data and make decisions.  It also is essential to understand what the most limiting factors are for a species - such as habitat loss.  Tune in to better understand how certain management practices Eric uses have a positive impact on the game species you love!

Paul is on the pursuit of another turkey, this time down in Alabama.  Looking forward to a recap of that hunt when he returns!  Andrew’s been hanging out with his neighbor Dolly (deer) that comes over to play with Champ (dog) on these beautiful sunny days.  One quick reminder, if you are outside, please be Tick smart!  Those jerks are out and about and with the mild winter, you will probably see more this year than in the past.

John Hudspeth, AKA “The Voice of Oklahoma” , coined by one of his listeners, invited Nick and the Sportsmen’s Empire crew to a hog hunt.  Biting at the chance, Nick wanted to have John on the show to lay out what was to be expected when chasing hogs.  John gives some details on how to approach hog hunting, like feel free to take off in the morning, since the pigs in his area tend to be active evening and night.  Also, pigs are heavily motivated by food this time of year.  Put out the best grub, you’ll find the pigs.  Speaking of grub, John lays out some great dishes to be presented at the Emperor’s table.  John and the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast can be found on Mondays on Sportsmen’s Empire Network.

Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire is our featured guest once again, this time to talk about many of the new proposed rules and regulations around hunting. Dan talks through some of the issues and lets us know what’s happening and why hunters should be concerned. He talks about companies hiring lobbyists to push new hunting laws for the companies to make money. He also poses some difficult questions, like should we have a firearm season on whitetails during the rut, what role do wildlife managers serve, and who is really making these laws. He mentions you should contact your local representatives to share your opinions whether you support or disapprove of any new bills. Another great resource for hunters to stay “in the know” is by joining and supporting Sportsman’s Alliance. Hunters, anglers, trappers, and outdoorspeople should equally get involved with their state wildlife management agency to voice their concerns and express their wishes.

Josh's turkey hunting road trip (dare we call it a Turkey Tour!?) begins in less than two weeks! Having added an Iowa tag to the list, Josh reached out to the host of the Nine Finger Chronicles Podcast Dan Johnson to talk about planning for out of state hunting trips and what to expect for Iowa.

Dan is no stranger to out of state trips. Each year, Dan hunts a handful of states, including some longer trips out west. With his experience, Dan has a pretty dialed in approach to planning and prepping for hunting trips. So Josh picks Dan's brain about making preparations. The guys also discuss what Josh can expect for an Iowa turkey hunt as far as getting on birds and encountering hunting pressure goes. Josh and Dan also get into scouting for deer on Iowa public land. The sheer amount of sign found in Iowa can be tough for a nonresident to decipher when scouting for whitetails. So Dan shares some advice for helping Josh get started planning his potential 2024 or 2025 Iowa deer hunt.

And since both guys are dads, the conversation eventually devolves into ranting about  kids, the woes of working from home during spring break, and Dan's new children's book, "The Volcano Dad." Enjoy!

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Jacob and Derek start the show by talking about the early spring temperature swings and how they make for some tricky fishing. Derek was fishing deep and slow trying to dig up some largemouths. He tried several different baits– find out which ones got some strikes. Jacob mentions the biggest factors that affect bass action this time of year. Dan Johnson says he does a little fishing as well and visits the Mississippi River pools every spring. He also drops his favorite fish species and how he likes to fish for them. The guys come to an agreement about the hardest-fighting fish.

We also have a candid conversation about the rising influence of solid color hunting apparel products: Is there a shift away from camouflage patterns? We ask some tough questions that really get into the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be a successful whitetail deer hunter and suggest that your camo pattern may not be as important as you might think. Dan mentions what he feels is the biggest thing to do to kill more deer. We banter over the other factors such as noise and light reflection that might be more important in hunting apparel. We discuss other important considerations for choosing hunting clothing such as durability and comfort and talk about why proper base layers mean all the difference. We mention a few brands we like and a few we don’t. We also mention how and when camo became associated with hunting.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. A Serious Legislation Conversation

There are several important and pressing issues concerning hunting and wildlife in Oklahoma right now, and on this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, we try to lay out exactly what those concerns are. Michael Arnette is one of many who has reached out to John in the last few weeks, and he does a great job of laying out some of the proposed legislation and how it might affect the sportsmen and women of Oklahoma and beyond. If you have been on social media at all recently, you have probably seen articles about airbows, velvet seasons, trail camera bans, and much much more.

Michael and John do their best to weed through some of the proposed bills, and what it could mean for both hunters and wildlife. The guys talk about how other states have handled some of these topics, and how it has affected them. Some of what is said in this episode is certainly opinion, but much of it is factual and taken directly from bills that are currently in circulation in the state legislature. It is growing more important every day for people to get involved with what happens in politics, no matter what side of the isle you fall on. If the people who love to hunt and fish don't stand up for their rights, there are not many others to do it for them!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are proud to announce a new partnership with Radix Hunting!  Our guest is none other than the founder and owner of Radix, Clifford Martin.  Clifford is originally from Southeastern Pennsylvania, but has been blessed with the opportunity to move to Iowa and live out his dream.  In the time he has spent hunting the midwest, he has been able to hone in and consistently connect with big mature whitetails.  During that time, he has learned how to fine tune his approach and mindset when pursuing top caliber bucks.  Even with all his success, you still won't find a more humble individual who continually says he is a student of the whitetail, learning almost daily.

We gain some background knowledge of Clifford and harass him a little on how he convinced his wife to move to the whitetail capital of the world!  Then we transition into his stewardship of the whitetail, learning their behavior and some of the consistencies he gravitates towards.  We address the question, "what does it look like to be an aggressive hunter?" and how his patience has improved throughout his hunting career.  Last, we dive into his most valued tool - trail cameras.  Clifford mentions multiple times that he feels "cameras don't lie" and his need for quality video to collect as much information as possible.  Quality was a driving factor in producing Radix trail cameras, check them out for yourself!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 166 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Rick Brule from Vapor Trail!  When Ricky was previously on the podcast he spoke about his upcoming Boundary Waters bear hunt.  For this episode we recap this specific hunt and the challenges it presented.

When it came to preparing for this hunt Ricky was all prepared and did his research.  However, since he was completing this hunt solo the weather played a factor in keeping him at camp for four days.  Being stuck at camp tested Ricky mentally and physically!  We discussed what he did during these 4 days and how he was able to still overcome challenges throughout his time there.  Ricky shared what these challenges were and what he did to overcome them.  To wrap up the story on this hunt Ricky discussed what he plans to do if he is able to draw this bear tag again in the future and what others can learn from his trip this past season.

To finish off this conversation Ricky spoke about his whitetail season and how his first year in the saddle went!  We talked about goals and improvements we are looking to make for this upcoming year including mobile hunting, future plans for Vapor Trail rests and a podcast! This was a great chat with Ricky and I hope you enjoy this fun episode!
