We have a really good one this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Lindsay Thomas Jr. is the chief communications officer for the National Deer Association and joins John to talk about a recent article he wrote about "rutcations" and if they are actually effective. Lindsay, like many others including John, had never been able to take a true rutcation until his work situation changed in 2021. After two seasons of taking a full week off of work to do nothing but hunt during the rut, Lindsay made a few observations that any whitetail deer hunter should pay attention to. He observed that factors such as inconsistent winds and added human intrusion might hurt hunters more than most realize, even during the peak of breeding season.

On top of the rutcation observations, Lindsay and John discuss a few other things that greatly affect hunters in the sooner state. One bright spot in the conversation comes when Lindsay talks about a few statistics that he recently learned about Oklahomas deer herd. These statistics are quite encouraging after all the recent talk about laws and regulations and other worrisome topics. Most will be encouraged to learn that the state of whitetail deer hunting in Oklahoma is far better than most realize.

There is a little bad news in this episode however. Be sure to stick around till the end, when John asks Lindsay about a recent research study done on wild hogs. Lindsay discusses the study and how to everyone's surprise, they have found that wild hog populations are growing at an even faster rate than previously thought. The age at which sows can begin breeding is staggering, and so is the survival rate of piglets!

Food plots... all the rage just a few years ago, there is perhaps no other deer hunting tool that promises as much for the hunter as a food plot. But there is probably no other deer hunting tool that leaves more hunters frustrated, shaking their fists at the sky, and disappointed with the results. What if I told you there's a better way of planting food plots? One that is cheaper, easier, better for the environment and the critters that live on your ground, and will likely help you avoid many of the pitfalls of some food plotting methods?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Dr. Grant Woods about using the Release Process for better food plots, increased soil health, and bigger deer. Dr. Woods has been working on the Release Process and has perfected his methods as well as the blends he likes to use for his area. And while all the details and equipment may seem intimidating, this episode provides a step by step process to help you get started with the Release Process, even if you don't have heavy equipment. Enjoy!

This week you are blessed to have Paul and Andrew discuss a few topics from around the state and the industry. To start the guys recap the opening weekend around the state of Ohio, in regards to turkey harvests.  There were 4,078 birds harvested on the opening weekend around Ohio which is up from 2022 and the 3 year average. Great job people!!

The guys talk about their trip to the woods last weekend, that was unsuccessful, and very wet, but still a good time in the woods nonetheless. Looking forward to more nice days ahead and hopefully a gobblin Tom or two!

The meat of the show this week comes from an interview that Paul did with our friends at the Okayest Hunter.  Paul misspoke and the evil social media world decided to descend on him like a swarm of locusts.  Keep in mind, that we aren’t perfect, no body is, so chill out a little bit.  Good talk and discussion about Turkeys isn’t supposed to lead to world war 3.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 170 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Tom Kubiniec, president and CEO of Secure It Gun Storage.  This was such an awesome podcast to record with Tom.  Tom resides just upstate New York where Secure It runs its daily operations.  This episode was unlike any other that I have done in the past.  Tom brings a lot of knowledge and experience to this conversation about not letting the fear of failure hold you back from accomplishing a goal.

Kicking the episode off Tom explains a little bit about himself, and shares great stories and experiences along the way.  From being a professional guitarist and having health issues that forced him out, to then learning sales and starting a few different companies.   We discussed how he went from his previous work into what Secure It is today.  This was an interesting take since the US military needed a problem solved and Tom was able to innovate and simplify.  We discussed what challenges he faced during this time period and how he overcame them.  From there he transitioned into commercial sales where now the everyday consumer can benefit from Secure It products.  We wrap things up talking about hunting up in New York and getting kids involved.

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 169 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Thomas Mlsna from The Untamed Ambition!  This was such an awesome podcast to record with Thomas.  I first heard Thomas on the Exodus Outdoor Podcast and knew I wanted to pick his brain on whitetail. Throughout this episode you will hear the drive, knowledge and passion Thomas really puts into whitetails, coaching, consulting and his company the Untamed Ambition.  We cover specific hunting tactics and share some stories we all can relate and learn from!

Kicking the episode off Thomas explains a little bit about himself, but doesn’t waste any time getting right into whitetail strategies. Thomas breaks down the 4 key elements that are simple but extremely effective when it comes to hunting big whitetails. From getting pieces of the puzzle together, to executing a specific plan to hunt the buck you’re after and mistakes we as hunters can avoid come next season, Thomas covers it!

Thomas also breaks down how to be more intentional with your camera setup, using your historical data in an effective way and really breakdown an area to be set up in the right location!  Again, I can’t wait to go back and listen to this episode because I learned so much while recording.  I hope you get a lot out of this one as well!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Repeat guest to the show, this week Mark Wiley is getting us that twas the night before Christmas feel good mood going with a discussion of the Ohio turkey scene.  Mark works as the state upland bird biologist, and has spent his career studying and monitoring the birds of Ohio.  With Turkey season opening in just a few short hours, Mark was gracious enough to answer some lingering questions about the current status of the flock in Ohio.

Paul is returning from another southern turkey trip, but this time empty handed.  He was lucky enough to spend sometime in Alabama with Mike Pentecost and others chasing birds through the hills.  Andrew did spend a night out in the fields watching for coyotes, but was unsuccessful on that front.  However, he was able to catch sight of a bobcat moseying through the fields.  Dan Johnson killed a turkey. Nothing else to see here.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

John had a heck of a trip to Nebraska to visit his sister and chase Merriam turkeys. On this week's uncut episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John talks about the many times he got caught by gobblers with his pants down, multiple close calls, and how distracting all the deer sign was. It is almost hard to believe he didn't fill his tag after situations like walking up on birds midday, turkeys gobbling when he didn't have his bow, and even calling a long beard to 10 steps! He really has nothing to blame but himself.

Even after all the mishaps, it was still an incredible trip. He got to do a lot of scouting for both turkeys and deer, and got permission on yet another property for this fall. John also got to see the effects of EHD for himself, finding multiple deadheads while walking around scouting. It is truly incredible how diverse whitetails and turkeys are and all the places they can thrive, even when it seems the cards are stacked against them.

Matt discusses the leaders he is developing through various camps and teachings and how they experience life changes through turkey hunting that instils leadership.

Matt explains how the programs under the Light Foundation brings youth together, and shapes them from a career and education perspective and provides them responsibility for shooting firearms and holding one another accountable.  Introducing kids to adults associated with the program enhances the leadership experience and shapes them in the right ways to ensure a positive change is created.

Jon and Matt discuss the universal problem of distractions for kids and how post COVID views have changed our world and pushed a differing perspective on the children of today. Matt explains the best ways to get kids into the outdoors and how to break the ‘wall’ of electronic devices and games that are overtly distracting. Matt details the youth turkey hunt they offer and how you can create a similar experience on your own property.

Matt explains how kids can apply to the Light Foundation programs, which include hunting, fishing, outdoors, timber framing and leadership development. Matt provides details on how to support the Light Foundation and what opportunities the foundation can provide our communities. Matt ends with an idea that will change your relationship with your kids and how new environments will shape their future.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re talking all things AI. We discuss several of the concerning questions such as what are the societal impacts, will we lose our jobs to AI, and will AI learn to code itself and take over humanity. The trouble is that we can no longer undo this thing and it’s here to stay. Which AI platform is the scariest one? Part of the problem with this now is that people already believe everything they see, how far will AI twist the truth? There is one silver lining amidst all this AI, tune in to find out what that is.

Now that we’ve terrorized you about the threat of AI, find out how we’re using it. If you’ve never utilized the “ask the community” feature in the GoWild App, this allows you to get answers to a specific question you have about a particular outdoor pursuit. We saw this as an opportunity to integrate our own version of AI, and have begun using and continually refining our own AI-inspired SquatchBot to help you get quick answers to your questions. SquatchBot is learning from the community and from previous posts along with scouring the internet for answers. Find out our goals for it, how it works, and what you can learn from it. We talk about one way specifically how he’s starting to really help members. There are some benefits from SquatchBot that GoWild members just can’t replicate, along with times when humans have the proper answer … and now you can have the best of both worlds!

Hunting has a variety of emotions relating to its mixture of being both a science and an art.  Many relate their hunting passion to their career choices.  But is passion the true metric for career decision?  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Eric Lance from the HuntScience Podcast.  Eric is a biologist that consults with landowners privately and also is an associate biology professor.  Eric talks about how his passion for wildlife first drove his interest towards becoming a hunter - not the other way around.  Eric's career experience is a great testimony to learning the influence of our strengths and weaknesses before applying them in our own careers.

This allows us to transition into discussing the current projects Eric is working on.  Eric is well rounded in land, big game, small game, and waterfowl management.  He discusses the nesting success project he is doing with migratory birds and cites numerous examples of sound wildlife management through his own experiences.  Understanding carrying capacity, population dynamics, and the habitat requirements of a species is necessary to interpret data and make decisions.  It also is essential to understand what the most limiting factors are for a species - such as habitat loss.  Tune in to better understand how certain management practices Eric uses have a positive impact on the game species you love!

Deer hunting or turkey hunting, what's your favorite? For many of us, deer hunting is our first love. There's nothing like a crisp November morning in the stand, blind, or saddle to get the blood flowing. But for the hunter looking to broaden his horizons, there are tons of opportunities out there. While there are a wide variety of species to chase come fall and winter, there aren't very many seasons open as the temps warm up and the days grow longer. Enter spring turkey hunting. Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire is our featured guest once again, this time to talk about many of the new proposed rules and regulations around hunting. Dan talks through some of the issues and lets us know what’s happening and why hunters should be concerned. He talks about companies hiring lobbyists to push new hunting laws for the companies to make money. He also poses some difficult questions, like should we have a firearm season on whitetails during the rut, what role do wildlife managers serve, and who is really making these laws. He mentions you should contact your local representatives to share your opinions whether you support or disapprove of any new bills. Another great resource for hunters to stay “in the know” is by joining and supporting Sportsman’s Alliance. Hunters, anglers, trappers, and outdoorspeople should equally get involved with their state wildlife management agency to voice their concerns and express their wishes.
