This week on Limbhanger, we're talking about when and where might be your best bet when it comes to booking an outfitted turkey hunt. This is important especially when it comes to chasing the 49 state Super Slam. While the majority of our conversations are focused on public land hunting, there are absolutely some scenarios and states where you may want to consider an outfitter, and some that it would be necessary.

Adam gets the opportunity to do some of these hunts through his job and recently came back from a trip to South Texas hunting Rio gobblers. Joey booked an outfitted hunt with Jay Scott for his Goulds hunt in Mexico. As the guys talk through their experiences, they break down some of the good and bad when it comes to this style of hunting.

Good Friday and Easter weekend is a time to slow down and celebrate.  It's easy to be caught up in the chaos of everyday life and be consumed by personal goals.  This is especially true for us as bowhunters and outdoorsmen and women who desire to take our pursuits to the next level.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we have a conversation with Merle Fredericks from Christian Bowhunters of America and discuss things in a bigger picture.  Merle digs into the details revolving around the question, "what does Good Friday mean to you?"

Merle's life has been comparable to most - a husband and a father working as a police officer in New York, and a love for bowhunting.  His passion for chasing whitetails with a stick and string is no different than anyone else.  But Merle sheds light on truth greater than this pursuit, and shares witness to us beyond the world of hunting.  Be open minded as you listen to Merle's message as a leader of Christian Bowhunters of America.  Happy Easter!

A few episodes ago on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we each drafted a team of hunters in a mock "Fantasy Draft". One of Parker's picks was a fella named Brett Mashburn. Brett is joining us this week to talk about his extremely aggressive public land hunting style. Brett puts a ton of emphasis on pre/post season scouting when it comes to finding a buck's bedroom. In this episode, he'll explain his scouting and what he's looking for. While Brett definitely values the scouting, accessing the spot is another area of emphasis. According to Brett, when the homework is done and the access is flawless, his style of hunting has led to more opportunities at mature whitetails and overall more encounters with bucks.

This week the guys cover Andrew’s recent trip to the Missouri and Oklahoma. While on the trip, Andrew was able to take advantage of a night of coyote hunting with the boys from the Missouri Woods and Water podcast.  Nate, Andy, and Micah took him out and showed him a good time in the Show Me State. They spent the entire night out running around using thermal optics and calls to bring the coyotes to the table.

The majority of the show covers the Oklahoma extravaganza, where John Hudspeth from the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, Nick Otto from the Huntavore podcast, and Dan Mathews from the Nomadic Outdoorsman podcast took a crack at some hogs. Dan struck first, but they all had some down by the end of the night.  Another late-night session with a lot of opportunities. Key take home about hogs: THEY ARE TOUGH.

Around the state some news of interest includes updates at the Delaware Wildlife shooting area, New K-9’s on the job, Walleye fishing in the state, and more.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 167 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Cody Jenkins from the Whitetail Legacy Podcast!  This was a podcast I have been looking forward to recording for quite some time and it did not disappoint.  Cody has been recording podcasts for over 6 years and has killed some big bucks and that is exactly what we discuss in this week's episode!

When we kick off this podcast we chat about Cody himself and how he has been able to be consistent recording episodes but also getting it done in the woods.  You really hear from Cody how important family is to him and what fun he is having getting his children into hunting.  We discuss other topics from improving yourself to be better in and out of the woods physically and mentally, current stages in preparing for next season! This was really fun to hear how Cody is finding big deer and the easiest ways to kill them!

Cody also shares how he uses trail cameras, hunting stories from this past season, breaking down a property for scouting, and much more!  We also talk about perfect hunting setups and what exactly Cody is looking for when he sets up on a killable buck. Cody touched upon the current state of trail cameras and the excitement of taking his kids out next season for hunting.

Josh's turkey hunting road trip (dare we call it a Turkey Tour!?) begins in less than two weeks! Having added an Iowa tag to the list, Josh reached out to the host of the Nine Finger Chronicles Podcast Dan Johnson to talk about planning for out of state hunting trips and what to expect for Iowa.

Dan is no stranger to out of state trips. Each year, Dan hunts a handful of states, including some longer trips out west. With his experience, Dan has a pretty dialed in approach to planning and prepping for hunting trips. So Josh picks Dan's brain about making preparations. The guys also discuss what Josh can expect for an Iowa turkey hunt as far as getting on birds and encountering hunting pressure goes. Josh and Dan also get into scouting for deer on Iowa public land. The sheer amount of sign found in Iowa can be tough for a nonresident to decipher when scouting for whitetails. So Dan shares some advice for helping Josh get started planning his potential 2024 or 2025 Iowa deer hunt.

And since both guys are dads, the conversation eventually devolves into ranting about  kids, the woes of working from home during spring break, and Dan's new children's book, "The Volcano Dad." Enjoy!

There are several important and pressing issues concerning hunting and wildlife in Oklahoma right now, and on this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, we try to lay out exactly what those concerns are. Michael Arnette is one of many who has reached out to John in the last few weeks, and he does a great job of laying out some of the proposed legislation and how it might affect the sportsmen and women of Oklahoma and beyond. If you have been on social media at all recently, you have probably seen articles about airbows, velvet seasons, trail camera bans, and much much more.

Michael and John do their best to weed through some of the proposed bills, and what it could mean for both hunters and wildlife. The guys talk about how other states have handled some of these topics, and how it has affected them. Some of what is said in this episode is certainly opinion, but much of it is factual and taken directly from bills that are currently in circulation in the state legislature. It is growing more important every day for people to get involved with what happens in politics, no matter what side of the isle you fall on. If the people who love to hunt and fish don't stand up for their rights, there are not many others to do it for them!

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Jacob and Derek start the show by talking about the early spring temperature swings and how they make for some tricky fishing. Derek was fishing deep and slow trying to dig up some largemouths. He tried several different baits– find out which ones got some strikes. Jacob mentions the biggest factors that affect bass action this time of year. Dan Johnson says he does a little fishing as well and visits the Mississippi River pools every spring. He also drops his favorite fish species and how he likes to fish for them. The guys come to an agreement about the hardest-fighting fish.

We also have a candid conversation about the rising influence of solid color hunting apparel products: Is there a shift away from camouflage patterns? We ask some tough questions that really get into the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be a successful whitetail deer hunter and suggest that your camo pattern may not be as important as you might think. Dan mentions what he feels is the biggest thing to do to kill more deer. We banter over the other factors such as noise and light reflection that might be more important in hunting apparel. We discuss other important considerations for choosing hunting clothing such as durability and comfort and talk about why proper base layers mean all the difference. We mention a few brands we like and a few we don’t. We also mention how and when camo became associated with hunting.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are proud to announce a new partnership with Radix Hunting!  Our guest is none other than the founder and owner of Radix, Clifford Martin.  Clifford is originally from Southeastern Pennsylvania, but has been blessed with the opportunity to move to Iowa and live out his dream.  In the time he has spent hunting the midwest, he has been able to hone in and consistently connect with big mature whitetails.  During that time, he has learned how to fine tune his approach and mindset when pursuing top caliber bucks.  Even with all his success, you still won't find a more humble individual who continually says he is a student of the whitetail, learning almost daily.

We gain some background knowledge of Clifford and harass him a little on how he convinced his wife to move to the whitetail capital of the world!  Then we transition into his stewardship of the whitetail, learning their behavior and some of the consistencies he gravitates towards.  We address the question, "what does it look like to be an aggressive hunter?" and how his patience has improved throughout his hunting career.  Last, we dive into his most valued tool - trail cameras.  Clifford mentions multiple times that he feels "cameras don't lie" and his need for quality video to collect as much information as possible.  Quality was a driving factor in producing Radix trail cameras, check them out for yourself!

To finish off this conversation Ricky spoke about his whitetail season and how his first year in the saddle went!  We talked about goals and improvements we are looking to make for this upcoming year including mobile hunting, future plans for Vapor Trail rests and a podcast! This was a great chat with Ricky and I hope you enjoy this fun episode!

Duane and Brian met last fall in Montana while chasing bugles with bows. Duane and his brother were camping nearby, and the guys talked almost daily between glassing spots and bonfire chats. Duane and his group helped Brian and Brian’s brother out of a tricky spot while in Montana and they have stayed in touch throughout the off season. Hear how Duane structured his life and his family to be able to hunt as much as he wants, why he never wants to ride a horse again, and how he adapts season to season and gets in on bulls.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Dan begins the show with some breaking news about a man who was imprisoned for beating someone to death with a moose antler. If you had to defend yourself with big game antler, which animal would you pick from? Brayden and Phil went shed antler hunting in a place that has been producing giant bucks. Find out how they used trail cam footage to know where to look for sheds. We also talked about several reasons why deer sheds are so hard to find. Dan has some unique coffee-drinking preferences.

The guys talk about their recent trout fishing trip: Find out why Dan didn’t make it. They met up with some GoWild members and had a good time. On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with fellow podcaster Brian Krebs about budgeting and saving for hunting equipment purchases. Brian and Dan talks about the "buy once, cry once" purchasing method where you are more than likely to spend a larger sum of money upfront in order to gain a product that lasts a long time. Then, once you have all of the equipment you need, essentially there is no cost to hunting outside of tags and licenses. Unless you are a true gear junkie who buy hunting gear every season no matter what.

Brian talks about how he pulls money directly out of every paycheck in to a specific account he sets aside for hunting gear. This allows him to know exactly how much money he has to play with every year. The guys also talk about how and where to look for deals and discounts. Fun episode you will be sure to enjoy!

The Kansas trail camera movement my be the beginning of a slippery slope for midwestern deer hunters. What's most interesting about this decision might be less about WHAT was done in Kansas and more about WHY the decision was made. Is this a good move? Let us know what you think!

Another hot topic is that of fitness & hunting. Many "influencers" today give off the vibe that if you're not a bodybuilding marathon runner, then you can't be a good bowhunter. Have they gone to far? Does fitness REALLY matter for hunting whitetails?

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch was privileged to speak with Dr. Grant Woods from Growing Deer TV.  If you've followed along with Dr. Woods for any length of time, you know how dedicated he has been to producing educational content through his channel.  With over 700 episodes of Growing Deer TV, the trials and research conducted at his farm "The Proving Grounds" are well documented.  Within this content is a journey of striving to provide high quality food plots through building healthy soil.

Food plot content has been taken to a crazy level in the media.  More people have dabbled in food plots than not, and there are more "professionals" now than ever before.  Like deer hunting, food plots can have an ego associated with the time, money, and blends growers put out.  Regardless of differing food plot blend preferences, we can all agree that good food plots start with good soil.  Dr. Woods shares with us how he has developed his food plot system to promote quality soil and highly efficient nutrient exchange.  We navigate the journey to the current day, and practices such as no-till and the learning curves associated with this management.  Dr. Woods addresses much of the confusion about the seed blends he uses and how each blend has a very specific purpose.  You'll learn how this system is allowing him to feed more wildlife with fewer input costs than ever before!

We’ve been friends with Dan for a while now; we like what he is doing and he likes what we are doing, so we decided to join forces–see what that’s going to look like moving forward. Is there another GoWild podcast in the works?

Dan questions what it really means to be an “expert” at something. He asks Brayden about his journey into becoming a fly angler and Brayden mentions his easiest and hardest parts of transitioning from bass fishing to fly fishing. Dan also talks about the challenge of having interviewed over 1,000 podcast guests and shares his experience from the recent Iowa Deer Classic tradeshow and what makes it one of the best. He recounts his glory days as a whitetail antler shed hunter and drops a bombshell bone-finding tip. He also gives us his no-fail, dummy-proof longbeard-flopping guide to killing turkeys.

Brayden set up his new rod and reel and is gearing up for a fly fishing trip with several GoWild members. He started with the Orvis Encounter rod/reel combo but is now scaling up to a DIY setup. Jacob paid off some of his marital debt to be able to join them on the trip! He also mentions his favorite flies to use this time of year.

Brad celebrated his daughter’s birthday and spent the weekend elbow deep in unicorns and rainbows. Dan mentioned how he got his young daughter a cell phone–and why he instantly regretted it! We’ve got several parents on the show today and get into the strangest, craziest, and wildest things our kids are saying and doing. This is a hold nothing back episode where John takes on the hard topics around laws and regulations that the sportsmen and women of Oklahoma and beyond deal with on a daily basis. The podcast starts off with some of the usual hot topics. Should Oklahoma remain a 2 buck state or go to 1 buck tag? Are crossbows really having a negative impact on the quality of the deer herd?

If those topics don't get your water boiling, there's more. A bill to start an August velvet deer season has already passed the senate and moved to the house, and could go into effect as early as next year! Not enough you say? Did you know there are people pushing to get airbows legalized for archery season in Oklahoma? Have you seen trail cameras are now banned on public land in Kansas? Topics like these can no longer be ignored, and they are only becoming more common.

As you listen to this keep in mind that these are the opinions of just two hunters.

Dan gets in to a great conversation about how rules and regulations can be influenced by non-resident interest groups who are more interested in making money than conserving the natural resource. This is where hunters need to step with a united voice and let outside interest groups know that they have no business interfering with another states natural resource, especially if they are not communicating with that states Department Of Natural Resources. This is an interesting conversation that is meant to spark thought and conversation about how hunting rules and regulations are managed in your home state.
