BBQ Chat with Cowboy Kev & Mikey K

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by a couple of BBQ pitmasters, Cowboy Kev and Mikey K.  Both of these guys live for the live fire pit and the low and slow lifestyle.  You can find these guys at the pit or on their own podcast, BBQ Chat.  Nick tries to take advantage of their expertise by having them give him some pointers when cooking large cuts of pork.  If you plan on putting something on the pit this weekend, Mikey and Kev will have you thinking about your process.  WIth the memorial holiday coming fast we need to get ourselves in the spirit of low and slow, on this episode of Huntavore.

Cowboy Kev hails from Connecticut and runs Wilee BBQ while Mikey is based out of the Chicagoland area and heads up Man Meat BBQ, yet is poised to head south sometime soon.  These two share a passion for barbecue.  These two take on challenges that normal home cooks don’t take on, cooking for huge crowds and serving amazing bbq.  These guys gave me some great pointers when cooking up pork butts and picnics.  First, that butts trump picnics because of their meat content and shreadability.  Picnics have more bone and do not shread as easily. Which makes them good candidates for chopped pork instead of shredded. Second, don’t forget to season after the shredding or chop because the outside got all the seasoning, 85% of the internal pork won’t be seasoned. Mikey Kay says for a special punch, add all the juices back in after the shred or chop. cowboy Kev does his whole hogs upside down with a skin facing the heat. Skin does a great job of keeping things in or out, essentially creating a bathtub for flavor all the juices render and can’t run off the meat.  You can find these guys, and their show @bbqchat on Instagram.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Jake Ehlinger (Habitat Solutions 360) discuss food plots, property management, design, maintenance, and new property layout techniques. Jake explains his no till, food source options and how to reshape your property based on the neighborhood. Jake discusses his neighborhood and how to approach changes on a yearly basis. Jake's adaptive management style and his ability to be consistent and grow more tonnage per acre, allows him to pull in more deer and be less susceptible to over browse.

Jake discusses his current food plot regime, and breaks down why this is the better late season food plot option when trying to manage a larger deer herd. Jake details his property layout and how deer congregate on his property when he creates “green plots” and how his food plots will outcompete other options like soybeans. Jake discusses a combination of soybeans and corn and what ratio he plants each in to get maximum results. Jake provides an option for annual plants and other options you have for late season food.

Jake explains his neighborhood situation and what his neighbors are doing from a harvest to food perspective and how this impacts his property. Jake discusses the importance of his observation treestand  and how you can observe much more through your own eyes as compared to trail cameras.  Jake explains how trail systems he lays out will lead deer through his property for better hunting opportunities. Jon discusses the importance of observation data and why we should not ignore this information when evaluating deer movement. Jake explains his observation data and how bucks use cover and how deer move based on densities and wind direction.  Jake explains how deer can avoid trail cameras and sometimes our reliance on trail cameras can be fraught with lack of or misinformation. Jon and Jake discuss how deer are individualistic and how data from trail cameras and observation lead to more information on deer behavior. Jon explains a strategy to pull a mature buck onto your property and the bits of information he relies on to ensure deer are going have increased interest in a property.

Jake discusses changes over time and how he handles the maintenance and improvement side of his property as succession occurs. Jon explains what we need to consider as we are making changes on our property as we go through seral stages over time. Jake explains a recent change he has made to his property to ensure deer utilization is high. Jake discusses normal maintenance and specific changes that may be needed to ensure bedding areas remain permanent fixtures in a deer’s movement.  Jake explains how to cut a focal area on his property through creating walls of cover, travel corridors, open and closed areas in the best locations. Jake continues to improve his and his client’s properties through these detailed methods of cutting and how he emphasizes diversity on the landscape.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 174 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and the 2022 Bowhunting League PA Big Buck winner Taylor Fleischer.  In this specific episode Taylor shares some of the little things that have helped him be successful the last few years, but specifically last year on the buck he was after for the last 3 years. Taylor shares the little things that can be overlooked by hunters and how to improve on what you’re already doing.

Kicking this episode off we dive into Taylors hunting roots from when he was a young teenager.  This was a great kickoff discussion because at a  young age Taylor got the bowhunting bug and from there has worked endlessly to continue his pursuit to perfection.  This aspect I believe most hunters want to accomplish and achieve but know the process is a long fun and frustrating journey.  We discussed how some hunting experiences shaped who he is as a hunter now. The lessons learned from his past season Pope & Young buck that he plans to build upon.  Then we get into the nitty-gritty of the little things that have helped Taylor the last few seasons.  From his organization of trail cam photos, reading/understanding deer movement and behavior. We wrap up our discussion talking about how he manages his property in central PA and the challenges he faces with hunting it and hunting where he currently resides.

Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Public Land

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re continuing our talks about turkey hunting. This time, Dan, Chris, and Jacob got out on a public piece. They heard some gobbles and had a nice setup but ran into some issues with other hunters. They finished the day with some scouting and got a great lead for where to set up next time. We talk about etiquette when hunting turkeys on public land and how to handle other groups in the woods. Sometimes it’s better to have a chat and work together. How do you adapt and adjust when Plan A falls apart? We swap a few stories of the good, bag, and ugly on this troublesome topic. We also discuss some of the key differences between hunting public and private land.

Brayden got out again and hunted an area he’s seen turkeys with lots of good sign. They were getting into their setup and then he realized he forgot one major item at home! They changed plans and managed to bring in a bird in the end, but didn’t punch the tag. They set up under a widowmaker and had a lively chance encounter with a woodpecker. How effective is scratching and scraping for bringing in turkeys?

Derek mentions a hot tip for where to find turkeys late-morning/mid-day after other hunters have been pushing them around. He got out and heard a lot of birds talking in the trees. It’s a tough spot to get in and set up but he made it work. He got a group to come in, they made a ton of noise but ended up getting hung up. He talks through the decision-making process and how to handle a multi-bird situation. He’s still struggling with something from that hunt … is it better to move slowly and quietly when a bird is close or move so quick it won’t have time to understand what’s happening? He also gives a good bit of advice for how to end a hunt on a high note, even when it doesn’t finish with a flop.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from t12he Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, we stretch beyond the limits of our own borders and talk to Andrew Muntz of Ohio. Andrew is one of the hosts of the Ohio Outdoors podcast, and he chats with John about a few differences between hunting in the north versus the south. Andrew lives and hunts in Ohio, but has also hunted deep traditional northern states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. Another advantage Andrew brings to the conversation is that he was just down at John's place in Oklahoma hunting hogs about 2 months ago, so he is familiar with how hunting goes in the south as well.

The guys cover seval topics including land parcel size, season structures, hot and cold weather effects, and even talk about different hunting strategies like deer drives. In 2022 Andrew killed a nice buck hunting two different parcels of land that totalled only 8 acres! He also talks about how Ohio does not have a modern rifle season. If you want to gun hunt, you can choose between a shotgun, muzzleloader, or straight wall cartridge such as the 350 legend. Overall, it is a great conversation about how different regulations work and affect different states and varying population densities of both humans and wildlife. Check out this episode, and be sure to check out Andrew and Paul over on the 02 podcast also on the Sportsmens Empire Podcast Network!

This week's episode we head south to chat with fellow Sportsmen's Empire Network contributor John Hudspeth from the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast.  You may be wondering how does a guy from Oklahoma relate to Pennsylvania?  First, he is a fantastic guy that anybody would want as a hunting partner, second, he is a hard working family man that can relate to balancing priorities in life of Faith, Family, and Whitetails, and third, he knows how to consistently connect on mature bucks with a few certain tactics.

We start the episode off by diving into John's 2022-23 hunting season and the 2 dandy bucks he harvested this season.  From here the conversation transitions to how and why he chooses his access and stand locations.  John hunts his family ranch which is an operating cattle farm.  While the ranch is 1000+ acres, around 90% is grassland and pasture, leaving John with "huntable" ground comparable in size to what many may see in PA.  John also uses feeders in his strategy (legal in OK).  While many think this is "cheating," Mitch and John both attest to the difficulties of mature bucks daylighting at these locations.  The guys dive into how using this valuable tool can orient better stand placement, promote daylight movement, and allow opportunity for the best bucks in the neighborhood.  They also discuss the value of elevated tower blinds on private land, especially when hunting near food sources.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 173 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by my good friend Aaron Hepler.  Aaron has been on the podcast a few different times already but the topics on today’s episode we haven’t really explored.  What we wanted to accomplish in this week's episode was to discuss how we can become more efficient hunters this upcoming year.  I think we honestly just scratched the surface and will be completing another episode or episodes to build on this. This is a really easy podcast to listen to and some of my favorites to complete when a good friend is on and we just chat hunting.

Kicking this episode off we dive into my turkey success stories.  We discussed how taking what I’ve learned in the turkey woods this spring can help me out come fall for whitetail.  Following that we get into what we can do to become a more efficient hunter.  From trail cameras, prepping your gear now, shooting your bow and a heck of a lot more.  One aspect that we touched upon was scouting and how important it is to have confidence in yourself completing your scouting missions.  From speed scouting, creating predetermined tracks on your map, to what sign to look for when setting your cameras for specific times of the year, Aaron covers it in this episode.  We end on two different topics being which cameras we have had the most luck with and how persistence has helped us in the woods. Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Cole Cannon of Buckventures hops on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week. Cole is the chief producer and editor for Buckventures, and he and John have a really cool chat about what it's like to be involved with a major outdoor television show. Before they jump into the ins and outs of the television world, Cole tells a quick story about a really nice buck he was able to take last December with his bow in Kansas. Having picked up the farm after hunting season had already begun, Cole and his boss and host of the show Jeff Danker were left with the cards they had been dealt by the previous land owner. Even with the deck stacked against them, Cole was still able to take a really nice Kansas whitetail buck.

After the story, John and Cole get into the hunting industry a little bit. Cole talks about how an internship led into a full time position, and eventually to him being the producer and editor of a major television show. Cole shares what makes the job so enjoyable and how it really is an amazing opportunity. It's not all fun and games, but the good tends to outweigh the bad. Cole also gives a few tips to anyone who may have a similar dream, and some advice on how to maybe get your foot in the door.

A Trio of Turkey Hunting & Scouting Tales

Big Game

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re still talking turkey hunting. Brad got out and tried something new to start the hunt. He talks about a few of the choices he made, for better or for worse. He took a chance but it didn’t quite come together.

Jacob, Dan, and Chris hit a WMA. They set their sights on a pretty remote spot and found out there’s a reason why hunters don’t get back into those areas. They did a bunch of scouting and found a few birds but weren’t being stealthy enough and got busted. They left the area knowing where the birds are and will be coming back.

Brayden got out with his uncle and some buddies too. They got a longbeard to shock gobble on the roost but then he went silent. They got some intel on a few other toms and quickly shifted gears. They planned an ambush and got in between several birds. They brought one in but made one critical mistake … find out what it was to avoid it on your next hunt! After that they decided to chase the other group of birds. They made a move and give a hot tip for keeping gobblers interested. Their sneak paid off and they took a shot, but it was a little too far. It was a great hunt nonetheless. What’s better: killing birds or the chase? We also talk about how much better turkeys can see and hear than we can.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch chat's with Matt Dale from Dale Outdoors.  Mitch opens by recapping his exciting week of turkey hunting and filling his second tag at the end of week one with a bow!  If you listened to last week's episode of Mitch's opening day gobbler, he talked about using the "whine" call.  He first heard this call explained on one of Matt's youtube videos.  We begin our conversation by diving into this call - what it is, how and when to use it, and its context for hunting situations.

We continue down the rabbit hole of keeping realism in your turkey calling.  This includes using "wheel-wheel's", "do-it do-it's", gobbler yelping, and more.  We discuss the value of volume and cadence in calls, especially in everyone's favorite yelping scenario.  How does a spring turkey hunter yelp sound vs. how does a real hen yelp sound?  Last, Matt recaps a hunt for a bird he called "Quirky", which took 7 hunts until he connected by pulling out an old secret weapon.  This is dynamite turkey hunting information to keep you fired up midway through the season!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 172 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by fellow Pennsylvania native Travis Melochick.  Travis and I grew up in the same area in NEPA. Travis runs the Anthracite Antler Addict content page.  Take it from the name, Travis cut his teeth growing up chasing bucks in the mountains of the coal region.  No easy task, but Travis continues to put in the work and reps the rewards.  One aspect that Travis and I both believe in when it comes to hunting is the non-stop passion for learning, growing and developing as a hunter.  I think you all will enjoy this week's episode because Travis and I cover a few different topics relating to the whitetail woods.

Kicking this episode off we get an introduction on how Travis began tackling the tough terrain of the coal region.  Then we transition to stories and lessons learned from this past hunting season.  We discussed what Travis keys in on during his scouting missions, how he specifically prioritizes the pieces he plans to hunt.  Loved this specific discussion.  Then we get into scrape talk, deer calling, scouting for future hunts, hunting in specific elevations and of course some trail cam talk.   I believe you will take a lot away from this episode and I look forward to spending some time with Travis this summer when scouting! Also, check out our website under the “In the Field” tab for an article Travis wrote! It is a great one for any level hunter! Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Travis Harmon (Creative Habitat) discuss the current state of the weather and why you are not behind if you have not started preparing for or developing a meadow or wildflowers mix on the landscape. Travis discusses the ideal time to seed plants to achieve success this time of year. Travis explains the importance of chemicals and burning. Travis identifies why it's extremely important to reduce weed competition early to support our warm season plantings.

Travis explains more about seed germination, the importance of a sterile seed bed and managing the existing seed bank is essential as more broadleaf plants develop over time. Jon discusses the method of planting a pollinator blend versus a meadow and how they should be laid out. Why soil samples are not the top of the list of activities for Travis when he is creating his habitat layouts.

Travis and Jon discuss the use of herbicides and burning, and why discing is a bad idea to establish pollinator plantings. Travis explains the significance of moisture and timing of plantings to ensure plants take root and become well contacted with the soil. Travis explains the mix he would use to create habitat for bees and butterflies and attraction for deer. Travis details what seeds he would not plant in his blends. Jon discusses how to handle deer populations and their preferences as well as strategies to keep your deer away from specific areas.

Travis explains the minimal maintenance that is required to keep weeds at bay. Travis explains why mowing may be a better option than burning a wildflower area. Travis explains how wildflowers used in a hunting design can create separation from neighbors that may or may not align with hunting and harvest goals.  Travis suggests that listeners think more about transforming their yard and save money from less mowing.

Arica and her family went camping and had a better time without any tornado warnings. She reminds us how quickly prime camping spots get booked up. They set up a lemonade stand and were a huge hit at the campground. Starve Hollow State Recreation Area in Indiana comes highly recommended!

Jacob went turkey hunting and explored a large area to get a better handle on the terrain. He took a gamble and had some interactions with some gobblers … find out how it ended. Dan Johnson got back out and has been very pleased with what he’s seeing, with the turkey population making a comeback. He had a challenging morning but made the best of it and rolled a big one. He reminds us how beneficial it can be to call to and follow hens. We talk about the thrill of being so close to a gobbler and how the sound changes and has many more layers that you can feel. Have you had success backing off the call when the longbeard gets in close? What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen turkey do with a dead one on the ground? We also talk about a few non-traditional ways to kill a turkey.

We also announce the winner of the tricked-out Polaris Ranger UTV. In case you missed it, Cole Bishop of Illinois took it home. Thank you to everyone who participated, we appreciate your support!

Huntavore’s Hog Summary

Big Game
Cooking
Strategy

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick has had some time to ponder about his hog hunting trip, and gotten some pork cooked, so it is time to wrap up the saga on Oklahoma Wild Pigs.  Laying out a bit of the process he went through, Nick covers most of the after the shot details.  Gutting, hanging, the high drama hair torching, and chilling a couple hundred pounds of pork carcass.  Along with his own observations, Nick has taken the testimonies of Andrew and John on their experience of turning wild hogs into flavorful pork. A whole lot of reminiscing on this episode of Huntavore.

First off it seemed like a dream to be invited on a hunt for problem hogs.  John was an incredible host and a huge resource on getting within range of these pigs.  After the shots rang out, and Dan dropped our first catch of hogs, the work began.  First observation was how far forward, and low the vitals were.  The heart seemed as if it was pinned directly to the chest wall.  Second, how the skin and hair worked together to make a very tough and resilient protection from the Oklahoma elements that seemingly wanted to sting, stick, or prick you.  Next, these animals didn’t smell.  Now it was pretty dry, and cool.  But the notorious smell was not there.  On our trip we didn’t have a chiller but we did have running water and cool temps at night.  Hanging the animals in the nightly breeze was wonderful for getting the body heat down and drying the flesh.  Getting these pigs home was a matter of a mass of coolers, ice, and a solid 14 and half hours of driving.  But well worth the effort.  Butchering observations was again the beautiful lack of musk, even on my boar.  While it has a slight whiff of boar taint, it was very flavorful and delicious.  Cutting the meat with the fat was a dream, sharp cuts and clean separations.  Most important, in my mind, the taste.  Both the fat and meat are a wonderful pork flavor, where not a lot of the animal will be discarded.  I am honored that John, a man that has lived around pigs for his whole life, would say that I have the chance to change the narrative on hogs being not fit for eating.  Let’s count this as  the introduction to the long tale of elevating wild pork.

After that hunt, he joined up with the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach Foundation for a one of a kind turkey hunt with a 9 year old boy named Brock.

After heading home and getting back to work for a few days, John then headed to his buddies place in west Texas to once again try to get a Rio Grande turkey in shotgun distance. Unlike his other hunts, this one happened extremely fast! Though he had his gopro rolling, John would have loved to have had a camera man along on this hunt.
