Josh's Snowy Day Iowa Longbeard

Big Game
Turkey
Whitetail
Public Land
Strategy

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh and Pierce discuss the ups, downs, and eventual success of Josh's recent Iowa turkey hunt.

Josh had a Period A tag for Wisconsin this year, and as luck would have it, some season 2 tags in Iowa were available that just so happened to be good for April 14-18. So Josh scooped up an Iowa tag anticipating a pretty vanilla hunt in the land of the giants. But the hunt was totally not what Josh expected.

Josh faced intense hunting pressure, wild weather, and stubborn property line birds, but was eventually able to accomplish his long standing goal of killing a turkey in the snow. Tune in to hear the full story and how Josh rolled with the punches to make it happen!

Habitat

In this podcast, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) discuss what to consider when buying hunting land. Tim explains how to think differently about your forest and what trees might be most meaningful from a wildlife or economic standpoint. Tim and Jon discuss site indexes and the benefit to timber.  Tim provides resources that help evaluate property quality and gives an idea where the best location is for food plots. Tim discusses GIS and how to evaluate changes in the forest and what areas have the potential for future timber. Tim discusses the importance of doing remote analysis on properties before stepping foot to do the legwork. Tim and Jon explain diversity on these properties and Tim identifies the type of property he would purchase.

Tim explains the importance of access for equipment and hunting. Tim discusses how to manage property and what he would choose if he had an option of field or timber. Both contributors assess property in increments and steps, explaining important criteria to valuing property. Tim explains the importance of thinking through the money and time elements of a property before purchase, and not pushing land buying budget without thinking about improvements. Also, Tim explains why smaller properties might be a better option for buyers. Jon discusses the importance of solar radiation and how it influences deer movement and forest stands. Tim and Jon discuss the benefits of water sources on the property, how to utilize water as a friend and increase deer usage in specific areas. Jon discusses drought proofing your property and how you can improve elements of your property to be more productive. Tim breaks down and provides clients options to consider when weighing timber improvements but not losing focus on hunting.  Jon explains how to break down and evaluate a field and improve it with different ways to better support deer utilization.

John is back in the mobile studio this week bringing you a pre summer check list. Before long it is going to get hot and dry, so there are a few things every game manager needs to get done before that time gets here. From tree stands to trail cameras, no matter if you hunt public or private, many of these things will apply to you.

After the to-do list, John also shares some stories from his Sportsmens Empire hog hunt from a few weekends ago. Fellow podcasters came from Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri to hunt hogs in southeast Oklahoma. Many of the guys had never even seen a hog, much less hunted them, so it was a lot of fun for John to take them around and turn them loose on some wild hogs.

Fishing

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re talking fishing once again. This time, Jacob took his family and went up into the Smokey Mountains to chase trout. If you’ve never been to Gatlinburg, you are missing out, especially if you have kids. There’s a private fish hatchery with lots of opportunities to catch some nice fish, and right in downtown Gatlinburg. Jacob’s youngest son catches a monster rainbow. The only thing better than catching them yourself is watching kids reel ‘em in. Find out what makes Gatlinburg an underrated fishing destination and learn how Brayden got his start on a fly rod in Gatlinburg as well.

Brayden went to a Luke Combs concert and had a comical run in with some backwards hat-wearing Instagram cowboys … find out how he saved their day. There were several other up-and-coming country music stars on stage and everyone put on a great show. He’s getting ready for turkey hunting season and trying to get some birds on camera.

Arica grabbed some concert tickets for a special Christmas show. She went camping with her family and went looking for morel mushrooms but didn’t find any. Is it really spring camping without a tornado warning? They decided to pack it up and get to safety. They dodged it but there was an F3/F4 tornado that touched down just north of them. We talk about how much camping has changed since the pandemic. She’s getting ready for another camping adventure and is getting help from the guys about which bass baits to bring along.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is joined by Michigan bowhunter Jack Ruthruff to talk about hunting in the mitten. Jack lives in an area in Michigan that has heavier than normal hunting pressure on both private and public land. Jack explains that an excellent buck for that section of the state would be a 115-120" 3 year old buck, and that is his goal every year. In recent years, Jack has lost access to private ground due to owner ship change thus forcing him to focus more on public land. While scouting, before he broke his leg, he located a thick and nasty bedding area that runs parallel with a marsh leading up to a destination food source. Jack believes that with the right access paired with the right time of year, he will able get the job done a target caliber buck.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch sits down with Jason Miller from JMiller Custom Calls.  You're in for a good ol' fashion B.S. session swapping stories and pulling takeaways for the upcoming season.  Jason is a diehard turkey hunter who continues a streak since the 90s of filling a tag in the Keystone state.  Jason is extremely persistent, scouting constantly.  Nearly every morning leading up to opening day and throughout the season Jason is up watching and listening to what the birds are doing in his area.  Then, the plan is simple - be aggressive and get as close as possible without spooking!

With this insane passion for turkey hunting, Jason has begun cutting his own mouth calls.  What started out as a hobby to pass the time simply to fine tune the sound he likes, has now turned into selling these calls for a little more turkey hunting opportunity.  Jason discusses this journey and relates back to many of the experiences he has had since beginning this call making journey.  Jason's passion is contagious - you should be ready to chase those thunder chickens after this episode!  You can reach out to Jason for more information on his turkey calls through Instagram @jmillercustomcalls. #radixhunting #huntworth #vitalizeseed

Repeat guest to the show, this week Mark Wiley is getting us that twas the night before Christmas feel good mood going with a discussion of the Ohio turkey scene.  Mark works as the state upland bird biologist, and has spent his career studying and monitoring the birds of Ohio.  With Turkey season opening in just a few short hours, Mark was gracious enough to answer some lingering questions about the current status of the flock in Ohio.

Paul is returning from another southern turkey trip, but this time empty handed.  He was lucky enough to spend sometime in Alabama with Mike Pentecost and others chasing birds through the hills.  Andrew did spend a night out in the fields watching for coyotes, but was unsuccessful on that front.  However, he was able to catch sight of a bobcat moseying through the fields.  Dan Johnson killed a turkey. Nothing else to see here.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 169 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Thomas Mlsna from The Untamed Ambition!  This was such an awesome podcast to record with Thomas.  I first heard Thomas on the Exodus Outdoor Podcast and knew I wanted to pick his brain on whitetail. Throughout this episode you will hear the drive, knowledge and passion Thomas really puts into whitetails, coaching, consulting and his company the Untamed Ambition.  We cover specific hunting tactics and share some stories we all can relate and learn from!

Kicking the episode off Thomas explains a little bit about himself, but doesn’t waste any time getting right into whitetail strategies. Thomas breaks down the 4 key elements that are simple but extremely effective when it comes to hunting big whitetails. From getting pieces of the puzzle together, to executing a specific plan to hunt the buck you’re after and mistakes we as hunters can avoid come next season, Thomas covers it!

Thomas also breaks down how to be more intentional with your camera setup, using your historical data in an effective way and really breakdown an area to be set up in the right location!  Again, I can’t wait to go back and listen to this episode because I learned so much while recording.  I hope you get a lot out of this one as well!

John had a heck of a trip to Nebraska to visit his sister and chase Merriam turkeys. On this week's uncut episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John talks about the many times he got caught by gobblers with his pants down, multiple close calls, and how distracting all the deer sign was. It is almost hard to believe he didn't fill his tag after situations like walking up on birds midday, turkeys gobbling when he didn't have his bow, and even calling a long beard to 10 steps! He really has nothing to blame but himself.

Even after all the mishaps, it was still an incredible trip. He got to do a lot of scouting for both turkeys and deer, and got permission on yet another property for this fall. John also got to see the effects of EHD for himself, finding multiple deadheads while walking around scouting. It is truly incredible how diverse whitetails and turkeys are and all the places they can thrive, even when it seems the cards are stacked against them.

Deer hunting or turkey hunting, what's your favorite? For many of us, deer hunting is our first love. There's nothing like a crisp November morning in the stand, blind, or saddle to get the blood flowing. But for the hunter looking to broaden his horizons, there are tons of opportunities out there. Hunting has a variety of emotions relating to its mixture of being both a science and an art.  Many relate their hunting passion to their career choices.  But is passion the true metric for career decision?  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Eric Lance from the HuntScience Podcast.  Eric is a biologist that consults with landowners privately and also is an associate biology professor.  Eric talks about how his passion for wildlife first drove his interest towards becoming a hunter - not the other way around.  Eric's career experience is a great testimony to learning the influence of our strengths and weaknesses before applying them in our own careers.

This allows us to transition into discussing the current projects Eric is working on.  Eric is well rounded in land, big game, small game, and waterfowl management.  He discusses the nesting success project he is doing with migratory birds and cites numerous examples of sound wildlife management through his own experiences.  Understanding carrying capacity, population dynamics, and the habitat requirements of a species is necessary to interpret data and make decisions.  It also is essential to understand what the most limiting factors are for a species - such as habitat loss.  Tune in to better understand how certain management practices Eric uses have a positive impact on the game species you love!

Beau’s passion for all things outdoors comes full circle with his spring scouting for deer, that helps in his pursuit of mountain birds.  We talk some tactics, but more about the history of turkey hunting in his family.  His grandfather’s turkey calls, and what it’s like hunting birds in the big mountains of PA.

Paul is on the pursuit of another turkey, this time down in Alabama.  Looking forward to a recap of that hunt when he returns!  Andrew’s been hanging out with his neighbor Dolly (deer) that comes over to play with Champ (dog) on these beautiful sunny days.  One quick reminder, if you are outside, please be Tick smart!  Those jerks are out and about and with the mild winter, you will probably see more this year than in the past.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

John Hudspeth, AKA “The Voice of Oklahoma” , coined by one of his listeners, invited Nick and the Sportsmen’s Empire crew to a hog hunt.  Biting at the chance, Nick wanted to have John on the show to lay out what was to be expected when chasing hogs.  John gives some details on how to approach hog hunting, like feel free to take off in the morning, since the pigs in his area tend to be active evening and night.  Also, pigs are heavily motivated by food this time of year.  Put out the best grub, you’ll find the pigs.  Speaking of grub, John lays out some great dishes to be presented at the Emperor’s table.  John and the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast can be found on Mondays on Sportsmen’s Empire Network.

Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire is our featured guest once again, this time to talk about many of the new proposed rules and regulations around hunting. Dan talks through some of the issues and lets us know what’s happening and why hunters should be concerned. He talks about companies hiring lobbyists to push new hunting laws for the companies to make money. He also poses some difficult questions, like should we have a firearm season on whitetails during the rut, what role do wildlife managers serve, and who is really making these laws. He mentions you should contact your local representatives to share your opinions whether you support or disapprove of any new bills. Another great resource for hunters to stay “in the know” is by joining and supporting Sportsman’s Alliance. Hunters, anglers, trappers, and outdoorspeople should equally get involved with their state wildlife management agency to voice their concerns and express their wishes.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 167 of the Antler Up Podcast!

When we kick off this podcast we chat about Cody himself and how he has been able to be consistent recording episodes but also getting it done in the woods.  You really hear from Cody how important family is to him and what fun he is having getting his children into hunting.  We discuss other topics from improving yourself to be better in and out of the woods physically and mentally, current stages in preparing for next season! This was really fun to hear how Cody is finding big deer and the easiest ways to kill them!

Cody also shares how he uses trail cameras, hunting stories from this past season, breaking down a property for scouting, and much more!  We also talk about perfect hunting setups and what exactly Cody is looking for when he sets up on a killable buck. Cody touched upon the current state of trail cameras and the excitement of taking his kids out next season for hunting.

With his experience, Dan has a pretty dialed in approach to planning and prepping for hunting trips. So Josh picks Dan's brain about making preparations. The guys also discuss what Josh can expect for an Iowa turkey hunt as far as getting on birds and encountering hunting pressure goes. Josh and Dan also get into scouting for deer on Iowa public land. The sheer amount of sign found in Iowa can be tough for a nonresident to decipher when scouting for whitetails. So Dan shares some advice for helping Josh get started planning his potential 2024 or 2025 Iowa deer hunt.

And since both guys are dads, the conversation eventually devolves into ranting about  kids, the woes of working from home during spring break, and Dan's new children's book, "The Volcano Dad." Enjoy!

Jacob mentions the biggest factors that affect bass action this time of year. Dan Johnson says he does a little fishing as well and visits the Mississippi River pools every spring. He also drops his favorite fish species and how he likes to fish for them. The guys come to an agreement about the hardest-fighting fish.

We also have a candid conversation about the rising influence of solid color hunting apparel products: Is there a shift away from camouflage patterns? We ask some tough questions that really get into the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be a successful whitetail deer hunter and suggest that your camo pattern may not be as important as you might think. Dan mentions what he feels is the biggest thing to do to kill more deer. We banter over the other factors such as noise and light reflection that might be more important in hunting apparel. We discuss other important considerations for choosing hunting clothing such as durability and comfort and talk about why proper base layers mean all the difference. There are several important and pressing issues concerning hunting and wildlife in Oklahoma right now, and on this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, we try to lay out exactly what those concerns are. Michael Arnette is one of many who has reached out to John in the last few weeks, and he does a great job of laying out some of the proposed legislation and how it might affect the sportsmen and women of Oklahoma and beyond. If you have been on social media at all recently, you have probably seen articles about airbows, velvet seasons, trail camera bans, and much much more.

Michael and John do their best to weed through some of the proposed bills, and what it could mean for both hunters and wildlife. The guys talk about how other states have handled some of these topics, and how it has affected them. Some of what is said in this episode is certainly opinion, but much of it is factual and taken directly from bills that are currently in circulation in the state legislature. It is growing more important every day for people to get involved with what happens in politics, no matter what side of the isle you fall on. If the people who love to hunt and fish don't stand up for their rights, there are not many others to do it for them!
