How to Capitalize on the Rut with Tony Peterson

Aaaahhhh, sweet November is upon us! The rut will soon cure our every woe, and whitetail bucks will throw caution to the wind and run circles around our stands just waiting for us to take a shot at them… right? While the rut can be the best of the year to arrow a mature buck, this is no time to take it easy. In fact, increased buck movement should motivate whitetail hunters to work even harder to make sure they’re in the right place at the right time.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Tony Peterson about how Tony approaches hunting the rut. For Tony, scouting is critical as he wants to put himself in a high odds spot that gives him the confidence that a buck he’s after will swing through. The guys discuss what kinds of things Tony focuses on during the rut, how much things like buck sign and hunting pressure play into his strategy, and why it’s crucial to keep moving if you’re not on the action. Enjoy!

Turkey

The first time Mitch heard Paul Campbell from the Ohio Outdoors (O2) podcast say the words, "the month of October belongs to turkeys," he thought Paul needed to be checked into a mental hospital!  However, after chatting with Paul and Brett Barry on this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, there may be some merit to those words after all!  Both Brett and Paul think about turkeys the way many guys think about whitetails and have a fall turkey hunting tour planned out each season.  If you've never hunted turkeys in the fall, it's a whole different story compared to spring!

Both guys begin by sharing their infatuation for turkeys, and Brett leads into his introduction to using dogs during the fall season.  He touches briefly on developing a dog for turkey hunting and the gear needed, then immediately dives into the strategy behind scouting, busting up flocks, and calling in turkeys during the fall hunting season.  Most turkey hunters think about hunting in spring when gobblers are fired up during breeding season.  But during the fall, finding food and security cover is key, just like hunting whitetails.  Brett and Paul are loaded with tips and tricks to being a more successful turkey hunter, especially during the fall when birds' behavior is a little more difficult to manipulate!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 144 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by NJ native Greg Litzinger. For those of you that know or have heard Greg on other podcasts know how much time and effort Greg puts into scouting and hunting.  Greg has been successful for a very long time and when he speaks on a topic he makes it extremely relatable.  This specific episode we dive into topics regarding the pre-rut phase.  More specifically what sign he is looking for, his camera strategy and how/what develops a gameplan around what the sign and trail cameras are telling him.  The main goal for Greg this year is to get back to his roots to find the freshest of fresh buck sign. If that sign is not there, keep moving forward until he finds what you need.

Greg also dives into saving specific hunting locations for this specific time frame of the year, finding food sources, hunting mornings or evenings, scrape setups, having the killer mentality and how to avoid/overcome obstacles.  A TON of great information here and we hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week with Ryan Glitsky! Best of luck out there and Antler Up!

It’s been a busy week around the state of Ohio.  Paul and Andrew have both spent time out in the woods.  Paul recaps his first time out hunting turkeys with dogs in northeast Ohio, as well as some time in the tree.  Andrew’s got his 3rd doe in the freezer.  Like always there’s always more to the story, and although this time the shot placement was perfect, the deer had some… well… interesting shall we call them boobies?

News around the state is very active. We discuss the NWTF’s work in Ohio, Deer Harvest totals, Scary stories, Littering and more.

Have a great week and good luck to those getting out into the great Outdoors of Ohio!

Oklahoma Archery Antelope Hunting

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast John finally gets to talk about a topic he has been trying to cover since he started the show, Oklahoma Antelope hunting! Antelope are one of the hidden species in Oklahoma that many don't realize are here, much less that there is a hunting season for them. Josh Barnthouse started applying for one of the coveted controlled hunt rifle tags several years ago, and it was then that he learned Oklahoma offered an over the counter archery option. He and a buddy set out with a goal of harvesting a speed goat with a bow, which is no easy task in any state or circumstance.

Josh walks us through his three years of chasing antelope in the pancake flat Oklahoma panhandle. He started on one of the few public areas that offered hunting opportunities, but after putting in some time and miles, was eventually able to gain some private land permission. Josh talks about the different strategies he and his buddy and most recently his wife have implemented over the last few years. They have done it all, from sitting over water holes to spot and stalk, and even decoys. Josh talks about what he has learned, what worked and what didn't, and how anyone could take advantage of this unique opportunity.

The Huntavore

Foraging Delicious with Alan Bergo

Cooking
Public Land

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Forager, chef, and writer, Alan Bergo.  Alan has honed his craft of foraging plants, mushrooms, roots, and even everyday garden vegetable plants to bring added flavors, textures, and excitement that only wild edibles can.  Alan was recently on the show, Chef vs Wild, where culinary experts make beautiful dishes out of the forage they find.  Together, the two unpack foraging for novices, dive into some specific plants that hold hidden flavor, breakdown the process for creating a mushroom/wildgame chowder, and learn some culinary techniques for creamy soups, and taking the sting out of needles.  Get ready for an information packed episode of Huntavore.

Alan Bergo is a talented chef that started on possibly one of the lowest rungs of cuisine, fast food and climbed up to very esteemed kitchens, where week to week the menu changed, flexing the creative capacity of these chefs to bring exciting new tastes to their customers.  The lifestyle of a cooking staff is easily one that is fast paced, pressure filled, where execution of the dish every time is expected.  Alan appreciated the challenge, and the chance to create with all kinds of ingredients, but like any industry that works its personnel hard,  the limits of staying are short.  Alan chose to walk away from the restaurant, but not from food.  Now Alan is on a venture to forage all he can, play with these flavors, and create food that is exciting.

For novice foragers, Alan described his time working with wild mushrooms in the kitchen long before he found any in the wild.  When it came time to find the mushrooms himself, it wasn't a mystery to key because he had past experience.  As beginners, familiarize with the goal item and that will help.

Alan hits us with some amazing kitchen tips.  First is if you have dehydrated your chicken of the woods,  they will become woody and fibrous.  However, simmering them in water or stock will extract that amazing flavor.  After the simmering, you can discard the mushrooms themselves but make sure to use that beautiful flavored broth.  The second tip comes about when Alan is describing the process to make a creamy soup.  Create a kneaded rue, equal parts flour and butter, worked into a dough.  Now when it comes time to thicken the chowder, simply cut off what you need, stir into the broth.  It gives a smooth texture because of the butter already being mixed with the flour, and allows it to thicken more if needed.

Our foraging talk takes us to a plant that I have always tried to avoid coming in contact with and that is the stinging nettle.  Alan explains his theory on how the plant puts so much into protection with the sharp glasslike hairs that the actual plant itself is tender, mild in flavor, and delicious.  By cooking or crushing the leaves, the stinging hairs are broken leaving am amazing green to add to the plate.  Alan suggests as a first go, steam the leaves for roughly 5 minutes, add some butter, a flaky salt, and a squeeze of lemon.  Another use of a common plant as an edible are Shagbark Hickory Nuts.  Shagbark nuts have a thinner shell, making them perfect for making hickory nut milk.  Alan’s quick description is after washing the nuts, and giving a quick crack, all the shells and nut meat go into a spice grinder, vitamix, blender, or food processor.  When you have achieved a powder, add the powder in a pot with twice its volume in water.  Bring to simmer.  The shells begin to sink and the meat begins to float and flavor the water with pecan scent.  He strains off the top and will puree smooth.  Alan will reduce it a bit and cook it into a custard which sounds amazing.  My own trial is to try this hickory milk as a coffee creamer.

There are tons of fantastic deer hunters across the entire country.  Each and every one of them has a unique set of tactics they bring to the table.  Usually they are developed specific to the regions they hunt most.  Deer density, hunting pressure, food sources and more all affect the strategy of targeting mature whitetails.  While there are many great hunters who can relate these components well in agricultural settings, finding people that consistently find success in big woods public land can be difficult.  The few that do are definitely grinders!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch has a conversation with none other than Johnny Stewart.  Johnny is from western PA and has hunted whitetails across the country, but still finds himself fascinated with northeastern big woods.  Many of you have probably listened to Johnny on other shows and know his intricate level of detail when scouting and hunting mature deer.  This episode is not much different, but we break down the hunting season from archery through late season flintlock and how Johnny works through some of the basics.  Enjoy!

In today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett breaks down clothing for the rut. The rut entails two major considerations - wild ranges of potential temperature and weather along with sitting all day. In just the last couple of years in the upper midwest, temperatures have ranged from as warm as 70 degrees to below zero. True all day sits don't give much of an opportunity to recharge your metabolism throughout the day, meaning that it's easy to feel like your clothing warmth is underperforming if you don't plan correctly.

Garrett covers keeping your feet dry and warm, choosing appropriate base layers, layers worn into the woods, and layers packed in along with accessories to keep hands and head warm and dry. For the purposes of the rut, Garrett's general plan and recommendation has shifted somewhat over the years from being more efficient while packing to being more functional while in the tree while making minimal compromises.

Perry explains how he broke down an unknown big buck that was a recent addition to one of the Drury Farms. Perry discusses hunting small farms and how to build bullet proof access, even passing through food plots and how the strategy created the perfect opportunity for an early season kill.

Perry breaks down the property that allowed him to kill his target buck. Perry explains the food plot layout, and seed type and how that attracted deer into key areas to make the blind location ideal for an early season kill. Perry details bedding areas and how the cover adjacent to the food plot created ideal conditions. Perry explains waterholes, and where they are laid out. Perry and Jon discuss food plots and scrape trees and how they support deer movement toward hunting locations. Perry details how they take photos of the deer they are after and where trail cameras are located in and around specific areas.

Perry and Jon provide numerous trips and tricks to get deer closer to hunting locations. Perry details Wade Robinson big buck kill and notes Mark Drury’s large buck harvest.

We have another two-parter this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. First, John takes us through his weekend hunting adventure where a last minute change of plans landed him on a brand new piece of public land that might just be a hidden gem. John talks about how and why he chose the spot, what he looked for in a stand site, and how a deer ended up 8 yards from the base of his tree! This is definitely a spot he will be back to in the future.

In the second half of the show, John welcomes back returning guest Taylor Jones. Taylor is a man on a mission. So far that mission has included two great early season bucks, including a Kansas velvet buck. Taylor talks about how water played a big roll in his success this year because of the dry conditions, and how he has learned how important entry and exit routes are. Taylor and John also have a little bonus conversation about getting your significant other into hunting, and things to do or not do.

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with Brian Murphy of HuntStand about the new upgrades that come with the Pro Whitetail update. Brian runs through all of the following updates.

  • Whitetail Activity Forecast - Obtain scientifically-based predictions of hourly whitetail movements at the county or even-subcounty level with HuntStand’s 7-day Whitetail Activity Forecast. Our proprietary model is informed by decades of research by North America’s top deer biologists and incorporates more than a dozen variables with thousands of possible data interactions to provide hunters with the most accurate hour-by-hour predictions of deer movement during the upcoming 7-day period.
  • Whitetail Habitat Map Layer - Using decades of observational data combined with advanced satellite measurements and artificial intelligence, HuntStand’s exclusive Whitetail Habitat Map displays an area’s suitability for whitetails at a granular monthly level. Perfect for e-scouting and prioritizing new areas to hunt.
  • Nationwide Whitetail Rut Map Layer - HuntStand’s Nationwide Rut Map details the peak two-week rut period throughout 98% of the whitetail’s range in the United States in an easy-to-use color-coded map layer. Data is included for over 4,240 counties, parishes and other geographic designations with information gathered directly from state wildlife agencies and whitetail biologists.
  • National Aerial Imagery Layer - High resolution aerial imagery from the USDA Farm Services Agency, often more detailed and up to date than other available aerial imagery layers. This layer is updated every 1-2 years on a state-by-state basis as part of the National Agricultural Imagery Program.
  • Monthly Satellite Imagery Layer - Not available in any other mobile app, HuntStand’s Monthly Satellite layer provides monthly satellite images, as well as several years of historical data.  It’s a perfect way to see recent timber clear-cuts, agricultural activity/changes, flooding, fires and burns or snow and ice cover and is pivotal to understanding the current habitat conditions of a potential hunt area.
  • Crop History Layer - Annual crop data across the continental United States showcasing 134 different crops at a granular level.  A useful scouting tool, especially in agricultural areas.

Archery Hunting PA Bears and Bucks w/ Todd Bromley

Bear

Pennsylvania is one of the few states that does not allow baiting or the use of hounds for hunting black bears.  With the extreme diversity in habitat across this state, harvesting one with a bow can be a difficult task.  However, with the season expansion and increase in bear population, archers taking the field in pursuit of these bruins have slightly better odds then they may have historically.  Regardless, scouting and developing a hunting strategy is still not a walk in the park!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Todd Bromley.  Todd is the editor of Crossbow Magazine and lifelong Pennsylvania hunter.  For the past 11 seasons, Todd has transitioned from compound to using solely his crossbow each fall.  We begin by diving into a bowhunting philosophy and ethics conversation, regardless of the weapon being vertical or horizontal.  Next we chat about Todd's recent fascination - black bears.  In 2015, Todd killed the 15th largest bear in the state at the time, and has since found himself scouting and hunting hard each fall.  He shares some tips for finding food in the types of habitat he typically hunts, and also finding sign in some out of the ordinary ways.  We also discuss a little bit of whitetail deer hunting strategy, specifically how he uses trail cameras to be successful.  We close by discussing some of the testing he has done with heavy crossbow bolts weighing in over 600 grains with 200 grain fixed blade broadheads.  Bear season begins October 15th, and this episode should fire you up!

How to Hunt the "October Lull"

Big Game
Bowhunting
Public Land

Whitetail

Opening week of archery deer season has come and gone, even for folks with October 1st openers. As we drift into the middle of the month, we enter into what many have dubbed the “October lull.” Countless articles have been written that explain the October lull. The deer supposedly hole up in their beds from before first light until well after the end of legal shooting hours. Mature bucks shift to completely nocturnal patterns. The only hope we have is the sweet action of the pre-rut. Might as well stay home and watch football. Sounds about right?

The only problem with the October lull theory is that it simply isn’t supported by the evidence. GPS collar studies have consistently shown that buck activity increases as October rolls on. And there are lots of guys who are out tagging big bucks in high-pressured areas in the heart of October. So what are we to make of the October lull?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson of the Nine Finger Chronicles to get his unfiltered opinion on the October lull. Dan shares his thoughts on where the theory came from, what the average hunter should make of it, and what guys should do if they want to be on deer in the month of October. Spoiler alert, you should still go hunting!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with big buck killer, Lucas Cayko, about his early season success.

Lucas talks about knowing where this buck lived, knowing his daily pattern, and knowing one specific crossing that led to him being in the right location at the right time. Listen closely, there's some great information in this episode that may just help you this season. Enjoy!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 142 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by our good friends Tom Runscavage and PJ Matarazzo.  Both of these guys live in my old stomping ground of NEPA.  With it being early in the season both of these guys have had success filling tags and getting on deer and wanted to hear from them what they key in on this time of the year. PJ starts the conversation off with sharing his success story already from this season where he filled his DE on a velvet buck and how he has been able to find success there the last couple of years. Both share what food sources they key in on and what they do when that source dries up.

We just have a fun conversation between the 4 of us.  Dimitri shares his thoughts on his end of October OH hunt, who influences PJ and how he has taken traits from these hunters and how he has made his own style.  Some good stuff is in this episode! Tom shares what gear he is using and we discuss hunting in higher elevations, hunting the so-called “October Lull” and slowing down in the deer woods! Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

For many of us, being a butcher is not our full time job.  We might break down an animal 1,2,3 times during the year if we are lucky.  Each year we find ourselves making the decision of taking the animal to a processor or doing it in the garage ourselves.  This week the guys have the honor of talking with Nick Otto, the Huntavore, and discussing how to break down deer.  Nick’s passion for all things cutting, cooking, and culinary shows in discussion of the topics.  He goes through the basics of what you can do in the field to help set yourself up for success at the butcher.  The guys also cover the basics of breaking down an animal, specifically a whitetail deer, and how to get the most of your meat.

Paul is recovering from sinus surgery, but doing well!  Andrew’s quest to fill the freezer before the rut continues, and he’s on the board with number 2.  Of course nothing happens as expected, so the story of the “missed” doe, and the follow up/week later doe comes to an end.

A lot of news around the great state of Ohio.  Hocking Hills state lodge is open, state wide pheasant release is coming soon, new fishing regulations and more.  The state wide deer harvest as of 10/13/22 is 13,009, with 4739 being antlered deer, 8270 being antlerless, and Coshocton county has regained its reign as the king county at 535 deer.

We would be remised if we didn’t discuss the moronic stories out of Ohio as well.  We dive into the walleye tournament scandal, and the Ohio hunting lease scandal as well.  We aren’t lawyers, just average spectators, but C’mon man!

Have a great week and good luck to those getting out into the great Outdoors of Ohio!

The early season can be some of the best times to hunt during the year if you're lucky enough to still catch deer in some summer patterns, or it can just be the early stages of a long drawn out season. Either way, getting back into the woods is always a good thing and continuing to increase your knowledge of whitetail and their movements helps. How to Adjust to Hunting Pressure w/Dan Johnson

Whitetail

Hunting pressure. Studies have shown it very quickly changes the way whitetails behave and move across the landscape. It can lead to deer-less sits and frustrating hunting for the hunter who wants to use the same old access routes to hunt the same old stands. But for those who are willing to get creative and put in the work, hunting pressure from yourself and others can actually help your hunting, if you can understand and capitalize on how deer patterns change when the pressure heats up.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about adjusting to hunting pressure. Sometimes the adjustments one needs to make are major. Sometimes they’re more subtle. But one thing is sure, if you hunt the entire season with the same strategy and in the same locations you hunted on opening day, the odds of you having regular encounters with deer are very slim. Tune in to learn how Dan makes adjustments to stay on deer despite, and sometimes because of, hunting pressure.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with the boss man himself, the man behind Sportsmen's Empire, Mr. Dan Johnson.  We converse over our current life routine including family life with children and slowly lead into hunting season.  Dan discusses the recent changes in hunting properties he is experiencing from losing one of his main properties and having to pull his gear off the land without getting shot at!  Dan talks about his pursuit in finding a shooter around his home in Iowa, but also shares his philosophy when it comes to out of state hunts.

In recent years there has been an excellent push to get people outdoors and enjoy deer hunting on public land.  However, there is still an overwhelming amount of "deer shaming", pressuring people that they have to shoot the absolute biggest buck, as if they are inferior if they do not.  Dan compares his philosophy of targeting mature bucks close to home versus shooting something on an out of state trip that just makes him happy.  How does a guy from Iowa relate to people in Pennsylvania and the Northeast?  Dan is an individual that does what he wants without the influence of what other people think.  Most importantly, he flat out loves bowhunting.  There is a ton of philosophy and a touch of strategy in this week's episode!
