October Bow Hunting Tips

Big Game
Bowhunting
Public Land
Strategy
Whitetail

On today's episode, Garrett talks about bowhunting in the month of October, which has become his favorite month overall to hunt in the Midwest. September can be nice because of the mild weather and of cover to help hide you in the tree. Bed to food patterns can be easy to identify, and deer can be less on edge. And of course November can also be incredible, though the second half of that month is usually the heaviest hunting pressure of the entire year with the various gun seasons, so often the best rut hunting is isolated, it can be very cold, and you can still put in long hours and slow days waiting for that one key flurry of activity.

October seems to blend the best of both months. Dressing for the weather is very manageable. Deer movement can be average to very good, and it steadily improves over the course of the month. Deer movement is also much more predictable than November, both from a bedding perspective as well as year-over-year repeatability. The cover has been knocked down a bit since September which improves shooting lanes, but not so much so that the trees you're hunting out of are barren. Hunting pressure usually isn't too bad either. So in this episode Garrett covers eight tips to keep in mind to help making October hunting successful.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh and Pierce recount their hunts so far this season, including their most recent hunt together at Pierce's place. Then the guys get into the important stuff, like whether Pierce should have shot the buck he passed last week. For Josh, that deer was a shooter all day, every day. Filming your Hunts with Brett Morris of Blue River Bowhunting

If you listened to last week’s show, you know that knowing where the arrow hit the deer is important. This week Andrew sits down with Brett Morris of Blue River Bowhunting to discuss filming your hunts. Andrew’s always been to concerned with hauling more gear into the woods and really wanted to figure out how hard it could be to film a hunt. Brett gives the 101,201, and 301 level courses on how to capture your hunt. It can be as complicated or simple as you want it to be, but hear about some of his tips and tricks to record that hunt.

Special guests of the week David Brown and Gage Hall come on to discuss their inductions into the O2 Deer Camp. David killed an insanely cool looking whitetail buck on the east side of Ohio, while Gage got it done on his first ever compound kill in Northwest Ohio. Both stories bring to light the beauty of the hunt for these two Ohio Outdoorsmen. Congratulations gentlemen!

Paul has been traveling for work, and didn’t have much to report from the woods. Andrew’s head game continues, this week after missing a doe at 15 yards. This time the only thing injured was Andrew’s ego, so that’s a plus. The biggest highlight of the woods this week was being able to try out First Lite’s new transfer pack. This bag ROCKS! If you are looking, or even if you aren’t looking, for a new bag to take to the whitetail woods, this is the first place to look.

Keep up the good work in the woods and good luck to those heading out this week. COLD weather in the forecast!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 141 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams.  This is the second time Kips has been on the podcast and I always enjoy catching up with him. Kip is a PA resident and we chat about gearing up for this hunting season, especially right now. Kip has two kids and with my daughter Norah coming out with me this year I asked Kip how to help make hunting fun for kids. After that we dove into how 2022 forecasts and the struggles of 2021. From how deer communicate, finding bedding, using buck sign to cash in on a buck early in the season. The last piece Kip dived into is controlling your emotion in the heat of the moment and the practice to better your skills for that one opportunity.

Kip does a ton of awesome content for NDA! From written content, guest speaking to making great educational videos. Kip is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to whitetails. Be sure to check his content out over at www.deerassociation.com. Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

The 2022 Oklahoma hunting season is underway! To celebrate, we have a very special guest this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Director J.D. Strong joins John to talk about all things big game. Right out of the gate the two tackle one of the big issues creeping up on Oklahoma and surrounding states, chronic wasting disease aka CWD. JD outlines what the state is doing to combat a potential spread of the disease, and also talks about some best practices for people to implement to help keep our deer herd safe.

After the CWD talk, the conversation takes a much more light hearted turn. The guys talk about the state's two elk herds and how the state tries to manage them on both private and public land. Black bears are also a topic of conversation and JD discusses the growth of Oklahomas population and why the state manages the hunting seasons the way that they do.

You can't talk about Oklahoma big game without spending some time on white tail deer. John asks the controversial "one buck vs two buck" question and JD offers some very insightful responses. JD also talks about the states mule deer population and how it can be challenging to manage such a small and varying herd on the edge of its natural range.

Blood Trailing Wounded Deer w/ Otto and Otis

Big Game
Bowhunting

Dogs

Pennsylvania began allowing hunters to recover wounded big game with dogs during the 2018 season.  While we always aspire to place shots that require short track jobs, it's only part of hunting to make a bad shot.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we sit down with bowhunter and blood tracker Otto Shick.  Otto is a humble farmer from Southeast Pennsylvania that has been bowhunting his entire life and helping people find their deer with his dog Otis since it has been legal.  With all this comes a substantial amount of knowledge regarding tracking and what to do after the shot.

Patience is an attribute that seldom goes unrewarded.  So why is it so difficult for many people to be patient after they release an arrow?  Frankly, it's easier said than done when you're dealing with adrenaline and excitement.  Without discipline, it can quickly ruin your recovery experience.  Slow down and ask yourself things such as, where do I think I hit?  How did the deer react? Where was the last place I saw it run?  What time did I shoot?  Otto shares with us what to do on specific shot situations, the amount of time to wait before tracking, how to mark the trail as you go, and what to do when you lose blood and decide to call someone with a dog.  When in doubt, back out, they say.  Not only is this true for allowing enough time for the animal to expire, it's also true for dog tracking.  Grid searching can hinder a dog's ability to follow up efficiently by molesting the track's scent profile.  If you need help with a track this fall or would like more information about blood tracking with dogs, go to www.unitedbloodtrackers.org.

This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we're talking about how to increase your chances for having early season buck encounters. We've heard plenty of guests, like Warren Womack, talk about finding hot feed trees. While that's still important for finding deer in general, it doesn't always result in finding bucks. What we've found is the hot feed tree that is secluded in a thick area can often be the first available food source inside a buck's core area. How do you know if it is? RUBS, that's how.

In this episode, Parker is sharing an encounter with a buck in Tennessee from this week. How he found the spot and what the buck ended up doing is a scenario that we've seen play out time and time again during early season. Even going so far as to say that statistically in this scenario, having an encounter with the buck laying down the sign might be as high as 50-60%.

Over the last couple of years, hunting public land whitetails has become cool again. Thanks to the success of many YouTubers, hunters are taking to public land in huge numbers. Despite the increase of pressure, however, lots of folks are still finding consistent success. What's their secret?

During the offseason, Michael wrote a book entitled, Deer Hunting Secrets to Taking Mature Bucks on Public Lands, which is full of deer hunting stories and many of Michael's hunting tactics. Ryan’s dad didn’t want it easy, and he got exactly what he was looking for on his hunt! To start things off in the podcast Steve shares what to focus on coming into the early season and how bedding plays a major role in this.  Follow this up by chatting about shifting cameras, and when he doesn’t shift cameras because he doesn’t want to disturb specific buck areas.  A question came up about not only how Steve tracks buck shifting areas, but does as well and his philosophy on shooting a doe early or not.  Then Steve shares his strategy regarding the three C’s (Cover, Cold Fronts & Cameras).  It was awesome to hear some techniques and stories regarding the three C’s.  Then the meat and potatoes of the podcast Steve breaks down how he would hunt each time frame of the big woods and ties in his trail cam data study for this period.  So much great info in this episode and Part 2 of Buck School with Steve as a freaking blast! Together they tell their reactions to a week of super highs and deep woes; close enounters, and hellacious climbs, and what helped them to have really good success as greenhorn western elk hunters. Not a lot of animals died, but a couple get real close, on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is joined by good friend, Brock Dean. Brock, AKA: The Former PLW, public land warrior. Brock and Nick along with two other buds, headed to Montana. They took their chance on a DIY archery hunt with General Elk tags. The week-long hint started with a 24 hour straight through drive. After hitting their campsite and prepping their gear, the 4 some made their first novice move and climbed straight up a face of the mountain without really understanding what their objective was. To their surprise they did happen to hear elk bugles, which gave them some confidence, and started their plan for the next day. Nick and Brock both agreed that our heads were in the right place, while maybe our bodies were not. Very positive going in, knew that the “slog” was worth the effort, continual planning and making audibles kept putting the guys in spots to catch elk. In fact, the group finding a closed ATV trail helped in getting up the mountain and to areas that otherwise would be out of their reach. While even the trail was in bad shape, it was better than thick timber and no switchbacks.

The group also found themselves at the top of bowl with little to no access, other than from the top. This became a sweet spot and location of several very close encounters. One being a huge bull in the timber, another being a spike bull feet from Nick, and finally the dramatic tale of Brock taking an uphill shot on a nice bull that ultimately ended unsuccessful. Overall with what they had accomplished, the adventure of it all, lessons learned, and how close they were to animals, they deemed this a successful trip. Let’s just call it, unfinished business.

Have you ever asked yourself if your camo pattern really makes a difference? Or wondered how much hunting pressure is too much? This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast has been building all off season long. John is constantly learning about whitetails and their behavior, habits, and how they move about the landscape. This week, John teaches a crash course in everything he has been learning over the last several months, and how it can be used in hunting scenarios. He has read, listened, and watched countless hours of information from experts all across the country such as the MSU Deerlab and other biologists. The bulk of this episode is about science and research backed data outlining some of the most important things he has learned about how deer see, travel, and react to hunting pressure. John takes these lessons, and applies them to how it can help you be more successful this deer season.

After the deer behavior 201 course, John also throws out some good reminders for folks to keep in mind heading into the fall. Tips like not wasting your time chasing unkillable bucks or not getting hung up on summer trail camera photos. As fall quickly approaches the time has finally come! This is the last episode before Oklahomas bow season opens up, so what better time to talk deer hunting!

The Harsh Reality for EVERY BOWHUNTER

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

It's that time of year when all the stars begin to align, the weather is cooling down, and it's finally go-time.  You've waited all year long for this, and you're going to do everything in your power to spend the maximum amount of time in the field.  How many times do you tell yourself that this task or event can wait until after hunting season?  It's so easy to get caught up in the mindset that hunting season is priority because there is only a fixed amount of time you're able to hunt each calendar year.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into some personal dilemmas he is having balancing his everyday life and the desire to hunt hunt hunt!  The conversation is more open ended and philosophical then direct.  He shares with us his learning curve being a father and husband while also trying to chase his passion in the whitetail woods.  Mitch is open with everyone about how he really struggles keeping his priorities focused during the hunting season and not allowing himself to put his family and loved ones behind hunting.  Time management can be difficult in life, especially when you have other responsibilities that force you from doing the things you want to do.  Even though hunting has so many positive attributes, the harsh reality is it can become a selfish endeavor with ugly consequences if you're not careful.  If this is something you battle, hopefully this episode lets you know that you're not alone!  Good luck to everyone this fall!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 139 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Matt Wiswesser from Venator Human Performance and Nodens Outdoors.  With the season fast approaching for PA and a lot of states already kicking off, Matt shares some strength training and mindset strategies to keep you ready and prepared for your hunts.  Matt is Nodens Outdoors Chief of Operation and shares some awesome things they have going on for helping Veterans through bowhunting, the outdoors and performance this upcoming season.  Matt is a hunter from northern New Jersey and shares his experience hunting private and public land.  Ultimately we have a fun bs conversation about improving your own self as a hunter and as an individual.

To start things off in the podcast Matt briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with his own company Venator Human Performance and Nodens Outdoors.  Matt is going to be doing some pretty awesome stuff this fall for Veterans where he and the Nodens Outdoors crew will be going to VA during Veterans Days weekend for a bowhunting camp.  Matt’s background is in exercise science and shares the importance of specificity training for what you do.  For example, the three of us are saddle hunters so we share some important keep training techniques when it comes to getting into “saddle shape.”  Within this discussion two key words came to mind and we touched upon them and those words were “discipline” and “stress.”  We talk about how we need to work towards gaining discipline and decreasing our stress.  Overall, this episode we hope fires you up to set some goals for this upcoming season to improve in all facets in your life.  Be a better hunter, be better physically, mentally and as an overall individual.  Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! We have our first success story of the year this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast! Returning guest Chris Hammond (episode 74) joins us again on the show to talk about his early season Kentucky velvet buck. Chris was invited out to Kentucky by a fellow professional archer and was blessed to hunt a very lightly hunted and secluded farm. This episode timed out well with John recently returning from his own early season hunt, so the two were able to bounce new experiences off of each other.

Chris is a great story teller, but the story is only half the episode this week. John and Chris also talk about several lessons they learned from hunting new states with different terrain and circumstances. Chris talks about hunting corn early season, which is not something people talk about a lot. The guys also talk about using ozone out in the field, and the things they have learned from using it for several years now. Last but certainly not least, Chris and John talk about Oklahomas CWD rules, and how it makes out of state hunting a little more challenging now that you can no longer bring whole deer from other states back into Oklahoma. They also discuss a few Oklahoma CWD thoughts as well, so listen in and feel free to give your thoughts on the subject on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast social media pages.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 138 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Mitch Shirk from the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast.  Mitch resides in southeastern PA where he mainly hunts private land but as we discussed in this podcast Mitch shares his strategy for hunting public land as well.  The two of us get into a bunch of topics when it comes to whitetail hunting. We dive into key factors that a property needs to have to help manage deer, his approach to his past few hunting seasons, getting outside his comfort zone and his story on his 170” buck that was on a 2 acre wooded lot.  We wrap up the conversation by discussing what hunting PA means to us and his Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast on the Sportsmen’s Empire.

To start things off in the podcast Mich briefly introduces who he is and we spend the first 15 minutes just having a fun bs session.  We then start talking a little bit about how running our podcasts have helped us over the last few years.  Mitch shares his thoughts on what a property needs to help manage deer.  For this aspect Mitch shares the importance of entry and exit routes.  We discuss the plans for the upcoming 2022 season here in PA.  This was a fun discussion because we both have full time jobs and shared how we plan on not blowing up our main areas when we can hunt if the wind doesn’t allow it.  I think a lot of people can relate to this aspect of the discussion.  Mitch shared his strategies for hunting a specific buck vs a general buck/deer. I asked Mitch how he goes about limiting his mistakes on his own property, his best of 2020 season in which he shot a 170” and the struggles of 2021.  Mitch shares the importance of gaining knowledge and intel by getting boots on the ground and getting outside his comfort zone.  Wrapping this episode up we chat about what hunting PA means to us.  Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! We always talk about pretty analytical hunting tactics on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. After all, we live in the deep south. Overthinking is a pretty common theme for deer hunters who consistently shoot bucks on public land down here. This week, however, we're going to talk about our main strategy going into the Kentucky opener...HUNT DUMB. We've been hunting this place for about 5 years now and without a doubt the people that always kill bucks are the ones hunting 100 yards from the road in the corner of a soybean field. It's almost comical to come back to camp covered in mud, blood & sweat from your hunt to find someone else at camp standing over a big buck, looking like they haven't even shed a drop of sweat. In this episode, you'll hear us recap the trip and talk about our strategy going into the hunt, as well as some changeups we made that resulted in a couple of dead deer and a great way to kick off the 2022 season!

In-Season Scouting Tactics for the Early Season w/ Aaron Hepler

The excitement is palpable as archery hunters are taking the woods all around the country. There’s nothing quite like those first few crisp fall mornings, sneaking in close to bedding, or watching deer vacuum up white oak acorns as they pack on weight before the rut. While the early season is full of excitement, it can also be extremely challenging. Changing food sources, shifting home ranges and increased hunting pressure can make it tough to pin down exactly where the deer are right now. This is where in-season scouting comes in.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler. Aaron is a public land hunter from PA, and spends a lot of his time hunting in a big woods setting. In season scouting is pivotal for Aaron’s strategy, and is crucial for getting on deer in the early season. Aaron shares his general approach to in-season scouting, what kind of sign he’s looking for, when to stop vs. when to keep going, and his thought process on a couple real-world scenarios. If you want to increase your in-season scouting effectiveness (and, I mean, who doesn’t?), this episode is for you!

Mark explains agriculture food sources, food plots, and relative distances of hunting locations near these areas.
