Southern Ground - Public & Private Land Turkeys, Turkey Hunting with a Recurve with guest Taylor Johnson

Big Game
Whitetail
Turkey

This week's episode of the Southern Ground Hunting podcast is all over the place. We sat down with no agenda, just a good conversation about turkey hunting. Taylor Johnson (@outdoorsvolunteer) joins the chat after having a "day for the record books", as he called it. The fun part of this convo is that everyone in the chat has killed a turkey within the last 7 days. Taylor, Parker, Adam, and Luke all share their hunts from the week, with a heavy emphasis on Luke's longbeard with a RECURVE bow.

How to Hunt Deer

Deer Hunting Lessons from the Trout Stream

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In recent years, many in the hunting industry have promoted a hardcore, laser focused, guerrilla warfare style of whitetail hunting. While there’s a lot to be said for this king of intensity, many folks would be well served by a healthy dose of diversification in their outdoor pursuits. Whether you’re hiking, foraging, fishing, hunting small game, or enjoying some other kind of outdoor recreation, the skills gained and honed in other activities can help you become a better deer hunter.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles, head guide with Good Chance Fly Fishing, about what trout fishing can teach you about deer hunting. Pierce is a multidimensional outdoorsman who love chasing whitetails, turkeys, and trout with fly gear. Pierce’s diversity has contributed greatly to his success in the field. This episode covers a wide variety of topics from access, to stage hunting to quality equipment. No matter your skill level as a deer hunter or fishermen, there’s something in this episode for you!

While on a recent family vacation, Josh had the opportunity to visit the Woodhaven Custom Calls facility in Alabama. Though turkey season is in full swing, owner and founder of Woodhaven Custom Calls Mike Pentecost was kind enough to take some time to record an episode. Mike is not only a fantastic turkey hunter, but he’s also a salt of the earth kind of guy. He’s a man who’s driven by his faith, a strong work ethic, and a passion for wild turkeys, and that certainly comes through in this episode!

In this episode, the guys talk about how turkey hunting and the hunting industry have changed over the years, how Mike grew his business from a basement side hustle to a national icon, and the current state of turkey populations and hunting regulations in Alabama. If you haven’t checked out Woodhaven calls already, head over to woodhavencustomcalls.com to see their whole lineup. In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Mark Haslam (Southeast Whitetail) discuss how to improve pine plantations. Mark’s expertise and management strategy to improve loblolly or longleaf pine stands can drastically improve overall deer interest and hunting. Mark and Jon discuss balancing wildlife enhancements and cash flow from a farm, and finding a balance. Mark and John discuss diversity and Mark gives examples of how his property provides much benefit to his deer herd. Mark details his checkerboard approach to handling pine harvests and controlled burns across the farm. Mark explains how hinge cutting hasn’t worked and why. Mark provides recommendations on how to get the most out of every inch of your property and simple, effective ways to manage trees during the growth stage to ensure deer and turkey will remain interested in an area.

Mark discusses changes that can be made on almost any property that will benefit turkeys. Mark and Jon both discuss improvements related to deer and turkey and how to approach habitat improvement with both species. Mark concludes with his number one turkey habitat improvement technique that will get results and how to balance income on your farm.

Turkey Calling Strategy With Scott Wilper

Big Game
Turkey
Strategy

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast, Nate and Andy have friend Scott Wilper on to talk about some turkey calling strategy. First, we get into Scott's travels this year at calling competitions like him competing at the National Wild Turkey Federation convention grand national calling championships. He gives some cool background on how competitions go. Next, Scott gets into how he likes to call in gobblers. He goes through hen calling like plain yelps, excited yelps, cutting, and purring and clucking and how you can use those to have a conversation with a gobbler and get him into range. He also goes into the art of reading a gobbler and how he responds to your calling sequences and how patience versus overcalling can be the reason you get him to come all the way in. Another thing to consider is how using owl, crow, and coyote (in the evenings) calling can help you locate gobblers where using turkey calls might not work as well. We also coined us a new term for Scott. When guys get Doug Flutied in the elk woods, the turkey equivalent of that is now called getting Scott Wilpered!!! As always, Scott is a great listen and a wealth of knowledge in this field. Hopefully our listeners are going to be out in the turkey woods soon using some of these strategies to their advantage. Happy hunting folks!

The Huntavore

Naked Turkey Schnitzel

Big Game
Cooking
Turkey

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick opens with a poem “So God Made a Farmer '' to memorialize his late Grandfather. David Otto was called home after 96 years, he was a great Grandfather , husband, steam engine enthusiast, farmer. Switching gears, Nick breaks down naked turkey schnitzel. How unbreaded turkey steaks can be flavorful, moist, and an easy addition to any menu, with the use of a marinade. All this and some heavy thoughts on this episode of Huntavore

After a week-long camping trip with his family, and some sobering news of his grandfather’s passing, Nick has a lot on his mind. Driving down to Kentucky from Michigan made plenty of time for podcast catch-up and reflection. A new show from former guest, Kate Kavenaugh called The Ground Work Podcast, got Nick thinking and unpacking how death is as natural as life. How death can reverberate well past the life and into the lives of those around it. Ok, enough of the heavy stuff.

Nick then switches gears and explores naked turkey schnitzel. A fork tender piece of turkey breast, not breaded, yet loaded with flavor. Starting with a lobe of turkey breast, pulling the skin, and cross cutting the grain about a ½ inch to ¾ inch thick. Following the same as you would with traditional schnitzel, tenderizing the cut steak. Basically, beating the meat flat with a meat mallet, cast iron pan, or a needle perforator. This creates first the fork tender part of the steak, and second, avenues for a marinade to penetrate fully. Nick goes through 3 of his favorite marinades. Easiest would be store bought Zesty Italian Dressing. The other two are whipped up at home, each imparting 3 basic elements: an acid, an oil, and herbs/spices. Lime Chili Ginger uses olive oil, lime zest and juice, grated ginger, and chili flake. Shredded cilantro is always good for a freshness element. Lemon Pepper uses the same olive oil, with a dab of Dijon mustard, Lemon zest and juice, and cracked black pepper. Again a parsley or cilantro for freshness is a good add on. All three marinades will only require 30 to 45 minutes to work on the meat. Any longer and the steak begins to break down. Keep it in as long as you would like, but just be watchful. Now to the grill where a direct sear for color and moved to indirect heat to finish. You want full done but not dried out.

Calling and Decoying Turkeys with NWTF's Bobby Armstrong

Big Game

Bowhunting

This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is the first of two episodes with Oklahomas chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. In part one John is joined by guest Bobby Armstrong. Bobby lives in western Oklahoma and is the "Save the Hunt Coordinator" for the state, and also serves on the Oklahoma state board of directors for the NWTF. This weeks topic is mostly about hunting, with a little bit of biology and conservation thrown in at the end.

Bobby started his turkey hunting journey in Arkansas, and talks about how back in the 80's a successful hunt might be as little as seeing a turkey track or hearing a lone gobble. One thing about him is that he truly relishes todays hunting opportunities, and even with what a lot of people are calling down years, he reminds us that we are still very blessed. John and Bobby start small with beginner calls and basic noises and cadences people should be able to make before going into the woods. The two work their way up to calling in birds and how different situations need different approaches, and also tackle decoys and the ups and downs that come with them. John tells a story of the all too common gobblers hanging up on a fence, and Bobby gives his two cents on what he would do in that situation. Towards the end John asks Bobby's opinion on shooting jakes, and how the overall population in the state is doing.

Big Game

Without a doubt one of the greatest aspects of hunting is the camaraderie among fellow hunters. It’s not uncommon for friendships to immediately form after the first time you meet someone and share hunting knowledge and experience. Those in the hunting community are almost always quick to help other hunters hone their skill. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we catch up with a bowhunter who has been helping thousands of fellow archers through his YouTube channel, Average Jack Archery.

Nate Sellers is a humble English teacher from Northcentral Pennsylvania with a passion for teaching – not just in the classroom but also at the archery shop. Over the past decade, Nate has been producing videos to help a diverse crowd of archers from beginner bowhunters to advanced target shooters. The guys discuss the evolution of Average Jack Archery and how a YouTube channel turned into a new bow shop which Nate is opening in July of 2022. As expected, we discuss archery hunting gear including arrow set up for whitetail hunting and shooting under pressure. Nate shares his experience this past fall of arrowing his largest whitetail to date in Indiana and we chat about how his Midwest hunting strategy relates to hunting back in Pennsylvania. If you’ve followed Nate and Average Jack Archery to any capacity, you can bet Nate will have advice for you in this episode.

Is Social Media Really Ruining Public Land Turkey Hunting?

Big Game
Turkey
Whitetail

We're going deep this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast as we discuss the elephant in the room. The question "Is social media really ruining public land hunting?" We've heard it talked about on different platforms in recent months, but as turkey seasons open up across the country, you can't deny that some of the turkey hunting gold mines of past years have turned into a circus. Our guest, Joey Bell, talks about his home state of Tennessee and some of the issues he believes have affected a once great turkey hunting state.

The truth is, hunting facebook groups have absolutely contributed to the amount of pressure we're seeing right now in these public hunting areas. "Not looking for your honey holes, but could someone tell me a good wma to hunt in _____ state?" Does that sound familiar? It seems innocent and it probably is, but broadcasting it to a group with 13,000 members is probably not a great idea. Join us on this hot button issue that many states are currently facing right now. We don't know all of the answers, but we do have opinions. Enjoy!

How to Become a Better Deer Hunter by Hunting Turkeys

Big Game

Whitetail

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Zach Ferenbaugh of The Hunting Public about how spring turkey hunting can make you a better deer hunter. Zach and the rest of the THP crew spend each spring on the THP Turkey Tour, traveling state to state hunting turkeys in lots different landscapes. Much of what they learn each spring while chasing longbeards serves them well each fall, when it’s time to chase whitetails again.

Spring turkey hunting can benefit the avid whitetail hunter in many ways. Everyone knows that spring, especially early spring, can be a great time to scout for last season’s deer sign. But the payoff doesn’t stop there. Turkeys have a lot to teach us about calling animals, fooling an animals senses, the right time to make moves, and how to get off an ethical shot in the moment of truth. Tune in to up your fall deer hunting game by chasing toms this spring.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discusses his recent travels to clients and most importantly the mindset you should have to succeed with changing your property for the better. The concepts suggested will displace non-native plants with healthy natural, native plants that will lead to more opportunities to attract and hold deer on your property. Jon’s process and recommendations to changing a property for good leads to legacy benefits that will increase hunting for the long run.

Jon’s unique method to evaluate properties and pushing listeners to the next steps of evoking change will ensure you have the best plants on the landscape; this will ultimately get you further than you anticipated and the net benefit should be more deer, turkeys, insects, birds and other small mammals. Jon explains problems he experiences with clients and his own property, and solutions that will allow you to manage plants that create interference. Jon discusses specific plants that hold individuals back from transforming their deer habitat into something special.

Jon breaks down the top five non-native plants that can be destructive to your habitat and provides a multitude of plants that can replace them. Jon suggests ways to remove plants and the harm that comes from leaving them on the landscape. For example, Japanese barberry and related tick populations can be problematic to human health. Jon explains steps that will improve the landscape when non-native plants are present and a big takeaway that will allow you to plan, make changes, and succeed!

This weeks episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is one of the more random ones, but its because this weeks guest is such an avid outdoorsmen that we had to cover a little bit of it all. Bransen Shelton of Three Rivers Outdoors is a man of many parts. He enjoys bird hunting with his dogs, shed hunting, deer hunting, trapping, photography, and his most recent venture of coon hunting. It was just to hard to pick one topic so John and Bransen just touched on all of them.

The two kicked it off with some shed hunting talk, and Bransen talks about how much he has learned about deer and their travel behavior after getting more into shed hunting with his dogs. He also says it is easier to train a dog to shed hunt than most people believe. The guys also discuss Johns recent burn at his property, and Bransens upcoming burn on his own property and the prep that goes into it. Bransen also tells the story of his nice 160" class whitetail he took off his own 50 acre place and the improvements he is making in order to make it a yearly thing. Bear hunting and the Oklahoma quail population are a couple more of the random discussions covered in this episode, and to hear the rest of them you're just going to have to listen to this episode!

His passion for things like chasing whitetail and ducks quickly grew and he eventually started guiding snow goose hunts in Arkansas and has done so for the past 10 years. Holt just finished his snow goose season and is looking forward to the impending turkey season to kick off. When Holt isn’t chasing waterfowl his day job picks back up as a heavy equipment operator. He is currently engaged and has wisely set the date of the wedding for June (no hunting seasons). Dan gives Holt an opportunity to turn him into a die hard turkey hunter. Let’s see how it goes!

Micro-Managing Small Hunting Farms

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

How many of you can relate to hunting small tracts of property? What about a micro-parcel of 10 acres of less? The vast majority of deer hunters with access to private land can relate to this type of parcel, especially those that are chopped up in the Northeast. While a Whitetail deer’s home range is significantly larger than the confinement of a micro-parcel, there is more that can be done in the off-season to improve the quality of hunting then most would think. However, in addition to hard work, it takes a more methodical approach, and sometimes outside-of-the-box creativity to achieve these goals.

This week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we have Phil Holcombe share his experiences from the school of hard knocks. Phil is a Pennsylvania native that is no stranger to hunting vast chunks of big woods public land as well as his own property of less than 10 acres. We begin by understanding a little bit about his property and how he evaluates the qualities and setbacks of a micro-tract. Phil explains how it’s important to “work with the grain” rather than against it – meaning take the qualities of the property and use them to your advantage. The core of his principles mirror strategy on public land, but reducing the scale accordingly. He also shares the importance of strategic stand location and access to allow the perception of zero hunting pressure. There must be a balance of attraction and “huntability” – all the attraction in the world will not yield the results desired if the local herd is spooked every time you step foot on the property. Whether you have a small property, or you’re pounding public ground, anyone can take away strategy from this episode!

No Room For Jealousy In Turkey Hunting

Big Game

Whitetail

We've got a heck of a turkey conversation this week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast! Adam Crews takes some time to share with us the story of his public land gobbler from opening weekend in the Florida swamps, and Matt Reaves shares his opening week successful father/son hunt in Alabama. They guys discuss some in depth tactics that went into the success.

As the episode closes, the crew gives a challenge to turkey hunters everywhere. Stop being jealous! There's no room for that in turkey hunting whatsoever. Sure, we can be competitive. It's a driving factor for men to enjoy the challenge. However, jealousy will kill your hunt and leave you in a bad state of mind. Go out and just enjoy the hunt. It's not about pulling the trigger and never should be, so take advantage of the opportunity that God has given you to enjoy creation up close.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles deer hunting podcast, Dan recaps his recent vasectomy and talks about early November and the pre-rut timeframe. To kick off the episode Dan takes you step by step through the vasectomy process, where he encountered the pain and what it felt like to have his newly cut scrotum jumped on by two of his children.

While icing down his balls, Dan was looking at all of the deer he has killed over the years. He talks about trends he noticed as to where there deer were spending most of their time during that pre-rut timeframe, and that just because it's November doesn't mean that it's the run. Dan feels that many apply rut hunting tactics during the pre-rut period and that may result in additional pressure to the deer population. This is a really good episode, especially if you ware interested in getting a vasectomy.

Shed hunting can be just as rewarding for some hunters and targeting a specific buck and their sheds can lead to excellent data for the following year. Steve discusses mistakes that shed hunters make and Jon identifies specific habitat features that support winter preferences to help attract deer to the areas we can hunt. Jon explains how a client has gone from no sheds to over a dozen based on the strategies that he employs on his property.

Steve discusses timing of antler casting and how the winter can dictate a good or bad shed season. Jon explains why deer drop their antlers. Unexpectedly, Steve explains that tough winters lead to better shed hunting. Listen in to all the shed tips and tricks Steve and Jon use to be successful. Steve and Jon end with a future saga and give insight into upcoming podcasts where Steve will be breaking down his target deer for next year.

Anatomy Eats with Dr Jonathan Reisman

Big Game
Cooking
Whitetail

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick contacted Dr. Jonathan Reisman, an ER doctor, physicians writer, and author of the recent book, The Unseen Body. Jon shares his unique perspective on the connection between food and anatomy that began on the first day of medical school, in a cadaver lab. Together Nick and Jon talk about the inspection of animals in a kosher slaughterhouse, why are lungs illegal to sell and serve in the US, Jon’s Anatomy Eats dinners where he makes connections from what's on the plate to the living organ inside ourselves, and how Nick and Jon share a questionable practice at acquiring protein. To unpack all this, stay tuned to this episode of Huntavore.

Nick happened to switch over to public radio on his way home one evening where he came across an interview with Jonathan Reisman, a physician who is also the author of the recent book, The Unseen Body. In addition, Jonathan during his first year in medical school, became interested in food through his anatomy courses. In fact he had a professor that would make correlations between specific muscles of human anatomy that would match specific cuts butchered from an animal. His studies lead Jonathan on a search to discover dishes made of organs and parts of the body that function to keep us alive. In his search, one method other than visiting slaughterhouses was to take up hunting himself. Like a lot of people who didn't grow up around hunting, he had a steep learning curve to become successful. He also shared that he would pick up roadkill for his other hobbies or bow making and tanning hides, and happened across a very fresh kill and seized the opportunity to harvest some meat (I tip my buzzard hat to you, sir). Nick was interested in Jonathan’s time in the Kosher slaughterhouse with the shochets or essentially the Jewish meat inspectors that qualify meat to be “clean”. One of their processes was to inspect the lungs for scars from pneumonia. This inspection opens up some practices we as hunters can take, as we are field dressing, using that opportunity to not only be the first to witness the opening of a wild animal, but to even examine the health and life of the animal by inspecting the organs.

Public Land

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Alabama big buck killing machine Michael Perry. Michael has had great success killing above average deer on heavily pressured public land in unforgiving terrain. Just last season he was fortunate enough to connect on the current Alabama muzzleloader record, a 195 6/8” bruiser. To what does Michael owe his success? Scouting, scouting, and scouting.

Michael’s approach to using maps to scout for whitetails is quite different than many others today. Rather than starting with a map and picking likely whitetail hotspots, Michael picks hard to reach sections of his favorite public spots and puts boots on the ground. Once he finds promising sign, then the maps come out as he begins to ask, Why is that deer here? While this may sound more like an old school approach to using mapping apps, Michael’s success shows it can hold its own as a tried and true method.

Turkey

Declining turkey populations across much of the U.S. have caused many to sound the alarm. Thankfully, turkey populations in the state of Wisconsin are still very strong. But how can we keep them that way? Is there anything we can do now to avoid seeing the decline other states have experienced?

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Dr. Grant Woods of Growing Deer about the causes of turkey population decline and how land managers can help right the ship. Grant is a biologist with decades of experience managing land to create healthy habitat for deer, turkeys, and other critters. Grant’s southern Missouri property, dubbed the Proving Grounds, had very few turkeys on it when he purchased it. Today, the place is an absolute turkey Mecca. Supplementing Deer With Mineral

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast, Nate and Micah talk with Dave Wheeler, the owner of Lucky Buck mineral about deer supplementing. Dave gets into how his agricultural background as it relates to herd health helped him be better prepared when he decided to make a new transition into deer supplements. Dave designed his deer supplement formula much like he did for his stock herds. We get into things like what is important for deer to have at certain times of the year, different minerals Dave believes are beneficial for deer, how controlling intake is very important, and much more. Dave also talks about his product, Lucky Buck, and how to use it throughout the year. We appreciate Dave coming on and giving us some great insight on this topic!
