Nine Finger Chronicles

All Things Deer Conservation with Brian Murphy

Conservation

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with the former CEO of the Quality Deer Management Association, now the National Deer Association.

Brian talks about the birth of the QDMA and the struggles he faced while growing the conservation organization. He discusses how QDMA slowly started to gain traction and their membership started to grow throughout the years. One of the struggles that Brian had to deal with was the lack of interest from Hunting Celebrities, Social Media Influencers, and even companies within the hunting space when asked to participate in conservation events or simply use their platform to spread their message. Now on the other side of the isle, Brian is working with HuntStand as their Director of Conservation and their conservation partners like Delta Waterfowl and National Wild Turkey Federation. This is an awesome conversation about the past, present, and future of conservation. Enjoy!

Trout Fishing and Habitat Work

Big Game

Habitat

On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John takes the microphone all to himself to tell stories and update listeners on some exciting news he got this week. Over the weekend, John fulfilled a bucket list adventure at the Blue River public fishing and hunting area managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Not only did he catch his first Oklahoma trout, but also managed to make a giant fool of himself, and get distracted by some deer sign along the way.

After wrapping up the story of his fishing adventure, John shares two big deliveries that showed up at the ranch this week. One of them is going to make his upcoming deer seasons much more comfortable, and the other is an old friend that is going to help take his habitat work to the next level! John goes into detail about some exciting habitat work he has planned in the upcoming weeks, and how he now hopes to get more work done than he could have ever dreamed of.

E-Scouting & Having A Cool Wife Lead To Big Bucks

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Byron Horton about how e-scouting and having a cool wife can both lead to more time in the woods hunting and scouting. The guys kick off the episode by talking about the rollercoaster of life and how adding more kids to the family typically means less time hunting, unless you have a cool wife. The cooler your wife is, the more time you will be spending in the tree stand. Fun conversation!

Then, after a ton of BS, Dan and Byron get in to a detailed discussion about e-scouting and what they both look for in a potential hunting setup. The impact of different types of satellite imagery, contour lines, vegetation, and validating your e-scouting by putting boots on the ground are all topics of discussion in this episode. Listen closely and you walk away rom this episode with a ton of great episode. Enjoy!

Fly Fishing for Mountain Stream Native Trout

Big Game

Whitetail

With spring approaching we have new ways of shaking cabin fever out! This week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with John Kolb. John is the founder of the Suffering Outdoors YouTube channel which showcases outdoor adventures in the Northeast, especially around his home in northern Pennsylvania. Even though John is a diehard whitetail hunter and can often be found wandering in large tracts of public land, he still enjoys spending this time of year fly fishing.

Opening day of trout season in Pennsylvania is nearly a state holiday itself with thousands of anglers lining the recently stocked creek edges. However, the length of streams stocked is a fraction to the 80,000+ miles of streams throughout the Keystone State. There is more opportunity to catch native trout then most would think. John enjoys the challenge of tying his own flies and casting his fly rod into pools that are sometimes smaller than a half ton pickup truck. Everything about this type of fishing is a challenge – sometimes hiking long distances, wary fish, narrow windows to maneuver a fly rod, and John adds an additional element with a camera! Make sure you tune into some of John’s fly-fishing videos that you will find informational and entertaining. While you are at it, you just might find yourself scrolling through the reels of deer hunting videos.

Doing Whatever It Takes To Kill The Gobbler

Big Game
Turkey
Whitetail

Thanks for choosing to listen to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. These days, it seems that hunters can not see eye to eye on just about anything. Turkey hunters may be the worst when it comes to arguing about the method of hunting wild turkeys. One guy shoots his TSS loads at 50, while another guy thinks that if the bird doesn't come in to 20 yards then the bird won. You've got people who think decoys are cheating, and others who wouldn't step foot into the woods without one. The arguments are endless. This week we're chatting with Zach Lucas about some of these methods and discussing our outlook on what method is the "right" method. You'll learn quickly that we don't believe there's a right or wrong answer. Zach goes through some of these methods and recaps hunts where he's used each of them to kill the gobbler he was hunting. We're there to kill the bird!

How K.C. Smith Uses Maps to Scout for Deer

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with K.C. Smith about how K.C. uses maps to scout for deer in the more open terrain west of the Mississippi. Map scouting can be a challenge in more open regions. As K.C. explains in this episode, areas often provide better cover and forage than what it appears to provide on the map. This means relating boots-on-the-ground scouting to map scouting is extremely vital.

K.C. is often working with unfamiliar territory and limited time. This means he needs to maximize his use of maps to find deer fast. Using Nebraska as a case study, K.C. breaks down his map scouting process from conception to kill. The guys also cover lots of other topics like finding quality food sources, picking the right glassing point, and how deer relate to terrain in more open territory. Tune and hone your map scouting skills from a seasoned pro!

Big Game

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with long range shooting enthusiast and Gunwerks salesman, Pake Taylor. Pake and Dan discuss all aspects of long range shooting systems.

Pake grew up in eastern Washington on a cattle ranch that gave him the ability to spend a solid chunk of his time outdoors. He started chasing birds and small game the moment his folks kicked him loose with his first BB gun, and the obsession has only grown expennationaly from there! On a regular year Pake will chase animals ranging in sizes from doves up to elk and everything else in between them from northern Washington to Wyoming where he lives. Where there's smoke there is a fire and his fire is deeply rooted into long range shooting and it only seems to grow with every confirmed hit. Gunwerks says they teach some to shoot out well past 1,000 yards but, most importantly that style of shooting leads to making a shot at 800 yards a slam dunk. Pake states, "Joining one of the various shooting leagues (PRS or NRL) is an awesome way to get time beyond a gun in unstable shooting positions while under stress. The best part is that it's an absolute blast to be a part of!" Gunwerks is strongly hunting oriented but has multiple options for crossover rifles for competition rifles and ELR rifles. They have a passion for providing the best materials for their fans and customers to continuously push the envelope for the modern day hunter and shooter!

This week, the guys have their longest episode to date. First off we start by talking with Tony from the open season outdoor show. This weekend March 17-20 is the Open Season Outdoor show in Columbus at the Ohio Expo Center. Tony gives a run down of speakers, special guests, vendors and more. Beat that cabin fever and get out to the show!

The main course for this week’s episode is the discussion with Mike Tonkovich and Lindsay Thomas Jr. Mike gives the insight from the Ohio Department of Wildlife and Lindsay gives the perspective from a national level of the current state of whitetail deer around the state and country. The guys cover many topics from harvests numbers, regulations, CWD and more. The CWD talk is a good discussion of different perspectives and thoughts. Bottom line, there is a lot of research still to do.

The guys have just been doing standard Dad stuff. Paul tip toed around Niagara Falls, while Andrew played lumber jack in the yard. Both are gearing up their turkey calls, and pissing their wives off in the process!

How to Design Your Forest for Deer

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In this podcast Tim Russell from Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services discusses how to attack and design your forest for deer. Understanding and recognizing the state of our forests and how to approach a forest stand with various tactics allows for an opportunity to meet our goals. One of those goals is increasing a variety of plants providing more forage for deer. Understanding the tree species that survive well in shade, intermediate shade or full sunlight explain much about the site and how trees have coevolved. Considering and establishing strategies to allow certain tree species to dominate our landscape through management and manipulation may allow for more vegetation for wildlife. Also, consider the resources on the landscapes based on the tree species, layout, and the features juxtaposed create options for those designing their hunting properties. As trees reach maturity and eventual die-off, which rarely happens nowadays, few gaps in the canopy occur and considering disturbances on the landscape are paramount to changing management units to allow for improvement in habitat for various species.

Jon Teater, Whitetail Landscapes, and Tim consider the status of the landscape across many properties and what tactics they are using afield to promote both even (one distinct tree age class) and uneven aged stands (several tree age classes) on the properties they are working with. Both contributors discuss how to avoid mistakes of cutting certain trees hurting your landscape and creating more options to maximize value on the property. Evaluating the trees, volume and quality, and recognizing that landowners should do something to achieve goals. The contributors consider the most popular options for forest stands: don’t do anything, forest stand improvement, temporary opening, regeneration cuttings.

Tim and Jon discuss specific examples and techniques for working with oak and aspen stands. How to coppice trees and example layouts that allow landowners the option to help wildlife flourish on the landscape. Tim and Jon evaluate various prescriptions that lead landowners down the path of finding success and in some cases making money all at the same time. Both contributors suggest that keeping the forest stand in a state of production, controlling invasive species, and thinking about how to balance long and short-term financial returns will be a weighted decision on the landowner. The podcast ends with a good example of how to take a prescription and apply it to ensure that you can rehabilitate the property for wildlife, particularly for deer.

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Jordan Donohoo and Justin Renard from Hunts For Heroes Outfitters about their organization and how their Texas public land hog hunt is going so far.

Hunts for Heroes Outfitters is an organization dedicated to getting service members, first responders and their families involved in outdoor activities. Justin and Jordan have been hosting a public land hog hunt in Texas for several years and a whitetail deer hunt in Kentucky. They plan to expand to several states and species all with the goal of building relationships and growing a community of servicemen and women that love the outdoors. Texas offers a wide variety of hunting and fishing opportunities and holds few restrictions on feral hogs. The estimate of feral hogs in Texas is currently around 2.6 million and Richland Creek WMA offers a season where non-residents can hunt feral hogs for 5 days for under $100. Justin served 10 years in the US Army and Jordan has served in both volunteer and professional capacities doing search and rescue for local departments.

Trad Bows & Underused Turkey Cuts with Emrah Oruc

Big Game
Cooking
Turkey

On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick spontaneously calls up Emrah O of Bowhunting Soul Podcast to chat about trad bows, chasing turkeys, and how to get as much usage out of your harvested bird. Nick has strung up his long bow after a good long while and wanted to get some tuning tips. Trying to not blow our brains with information, Emrah gives some places to start, like brace height, and getting a correct spined arrow. Nick wanted to move into turkey dishes that utilizes underused cuts of the bird, and how plucking your whole bird can help. Emrah adds even more ideas outside of just meat, but using parts in your equipment to chase the next bird. If you want to get the most of your turkey this year, than tune into this episode of Huntavore

Emrah Oruc is the host and creator of Bowhunting Soul. A podcast and youtube channel dedicated to the soul of archery, using traditional equipment. So starting out this episode, Nick quickly jumps into talking about traditional archery. Running an archery unit for his 3rd and 4th graders using compound bows, kids have had their first bite of the archery bug, slinging some arrows. As a bit of a show and tell, Nick strung up his long bow and sent a few shots down range. Emrah reminds everyone that with traditional equipment, as you get more basic, you begin inputting more and more of the archer behind the bow. Not to say that its all trial and error, but my zero’d in setup could be way off for Emrah.

Nick transitioned into talking turkey. With Wild Turkey seasons opening up soon, hunters are eagerly awaiting the next species to chase. Emrah explains his reasoning for going mobile and using a ghillie suit instead of a popup blind. Going light and fast does increase your chances of getting spotted. Emrah explains that he has gone 0/3 on birds, but with each attempt he got closer and closer to putting the pieces together. Nick is making a bold prediction that Emrah connects on a bird this year.

Now onto using your harvested bird. Emrah talks about actually making fletchings for arrows from the flight feathers, and creating a bone call for your slate from the wing bones. Even if you don't have a plan yet for your bird, Nick does talk about upping your ROI by plucking your bird instead of skinning. The skin can better protect the flesh in the freezer, and what little fat the bird has is under the skin, a natural flavor and moisture improvement. Braising and stewing wings and salvaged necks create amazing stock. Nick took the opportunity to make french onion soup from wings and necks. Overall easily done without much effort. For the drums and thighs, Nick also used his sous vide wand in great application. Adding ⅛ cup of oil or butter, some herbs, salt and pepper and a thigh to a bag and letting it cook at 155F for 36 hours (yes, 36 hours) delivers an amazing tender meat, with all the beautiful turkey flavor, without the dryness folks experience. A quick broil in the oven to brown the skin and serve either whole or shredded. That's another way to capture the beautiful dark meat from your bird.

Spring is right around the corner, and that means food plot time. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Steve, Andy, and Kenton of Plot Dr for an in depth lesson on how to get more out of your food plots. Steve is the owner of TIP Inc out of Wisconsin, a large agriculture company and the parent company of Plot Dr. Andy and Kenton are agronomists that help develop and teach people about the different Plot Dr products. The three take their knowledge of big ag, and shrink it into a more user friendly food plot size.

If you are used to hearing surface level food plot topics like what seed to plant to bring in more deer and when to plant it, this is not what this conversation is about. This podcast takes a deep dive into improving your soil, getting your ph right, when and how to use lime and/or calcium, and how all of this plays a part into a better and healthier deer herd. Steve, Andy, and Kenton work with people every day to improve their soils, crops, and food plots, so put your thinking cap on and listen as they discuss the entire Plot Dr line and how it can help you and your deer.

Bad Luck & Strategy Change Leads To A Booner

Big Game

Whitetail

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jim LaRose of New York about how the tides of bad luck shifted in his favor when shot a 170" whitetail buck. Jim kicks off the episode by breaking down the terrain of the properties he hunts and how he has seen the overall deer population decrease over the last several years. This has led to Jim making a strategy change with him moving his treestands off of the field edges and deeper in to the blocks of timber where the deer bed.

Before the 2021 started Jim had 3 bucks on his hit list that he was going to chase. On opening day one of the bucks was hit by a car, and a couple weeks later he let an arrow go on a buck that that they called in a dog tracker to help recover, but they never did. Feeling down and out, he let the rest of the archery season slip away. But, on opening day of the firearm season he connected on a giant buck that he had 3 years of history... with a pistol!

Excellent episode, enjoy!

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Plant Diversity and Hunt Strategy w/ Steve Chilcote

Big Game

Whitetail

On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we conclude the second half of our interview with Land and Timber Consultant, Steve Chilcote. In part one, Steve shares his background of forestry and land consulting which leads into topics of browse, cover, and invasive species management. In part two, Steve concludes his thoughts on a few more invasive species he typically finds on properties and the necessary measures to correct them. As plant communities transition with removal of invasives, Steve stresses that there needs to be quality plants that fill in the newly created space – otherwise invasives will reinhabit. Typically, the native seed bank has stored seeds for decades that only needed sunlight and reduced competition to flourish.

In some cases, adding conifer trees for improved cover or screening is possible for landscapes that lack this habitat feature. Steve breaks down the how, what, and where of conifer adding and management on some client properties. Lastly, Steve concludes with hunting tips and strategy for private landowners looking to shoot for the stars and harvest the most mature deer in the neighborhood. All the practices and techniques discussed throughout part one and two of this interview are conservation oriented at the core – it’s an added bonus when they allow better hunting opportunity!

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks hunting buddies Zach Hopper and Sam Maedke all about turkey hunting. Dan shares that he thinks turkey hunting is overrated as Zach and Sam share about their obsessions and successes during turkey season.

Zach has been hunting and fishing since he was 5 years old. Now at 23 he works as the head of marketing for Buck Gardner Calls and is obsessed with waterfowl and turkey hunting. He has a bachelors degree in marketing from Ole Miss and lives in north Mississippi. Zach started waterfowl hunting over 10 years ago and it quickly became his passion. Over the last 10 years he has traveled more and more and hunting new places but still loves to hunt his duck lease in the Mississippi Delta.

Sam is not only a multi-time state champion duck and goose caller, he is also Dan’s cousin and played a huge role in Dan getting into the sport. Sam lives in Two Rivers WI where he is part of N.E.W. Outdoors. Sam is currently helping revamp the goose call line at Buck Gardner Calls where he and Dan both serve as Expert Staff Members. Ice Fishing Essentials with Sean McVeigh

Big Game
Fishing
Conservation

On today's podcast we have a little change of pace. One of my friends, Sean McVeigh recently took up ice fishing, which has been something I've done now for a couple decades. Being so new and not really being sure of all the ins and outs, Sean and I had talked quite a bit about how to get started. This included defining what the bare necessities are and what the pros and cons are for various levels of equipment. Ice fishing is another one of those things where it seems like you can spend as much or as little as you want, but there are definitely certain areas you don't want to skimp out on. We recorded this episode in the hopes that anyone else new to ice fishing might have a resource to look into and be able to help guide their decision making process for choosing rods, augers, line, reels, shelters, and electronics.

On this week's episode of Southern Ground Hunting, a few of us had a chat about turkey season being just around the corner. As the season approaches, we've been brushing up on our understanding of the new regulations that will be in affect this season in Alabama. We're joined by our friend Devin Duncan of Virginia for this episode. While Devin isn't an Alabama resident, he has spent some time turkey hunting here. In fact, in the 2020 season he was able to kill 4 public land gobblers in 5 1/2 days of hunting. Even in his success, he had some self reflection to do as he says "I just felt kind of guilty for killing that many turkeys". We thought he would be a great voice on the topic as a non-resident, and we even squeeze a few tactics out of him. Parker gets to chime in on the public land resident perspective, while Luke carries the private land resident side of the conversation.

Big Game

Whitetail

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, I catch up with Greg Litzinger to hear what he keys in on when map scouting for deer in the big woods and salt marshes of New Jersey. Greg, aka the Bowhunting Fiend, hunts highly pressured public land in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. All the competition means Greg needs every edge he can get to seal the deal on big bucks. Map scouting is one of the tools Greg uses to get himself away from the hunting pressure and on the deer.

While map scouting is a common tool for big buck killers, everyone has a little different technique and approach depending on their hunting style and the terrain they hunt. For Greg, map scouting is a year round endeavor. During the hunting season, the map serves as a starting point for Greg. He’ll then use it to scout his way in and set up and hunt over freshest sign. In this episode, Greg shares how he uses maps to find the kinds of properties he’s looking for, the specific features that he keys in on, what would make him write a property off, and his top advice to help the average hunter kill more deer.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with turkey calling extraordinaire and four time Grand National Calling Champion Scott Ellis about building a turkey hunting playbook. Each hunt and each gobbler is different, so it’s important to have a bank of plays to run no matter the scenario. The deeper your playbook is, the greater your chances of being successful on stubborn longbeards. Scott and Josh discuss a few ways to help you build out your playbook and fill more turkey tags this spring.

Scott is a turkey calling champion, author, and host of Hunt Quest. He’s also an accomplished hunter. Cutting his teeth hunting Osceolas in Florida, Scott travels each year chasing Toms across the country and has completed two single season Grand Slams and two Royal Slams.

In this episode, Scott mentions that he wants to be remembered as the guy who shared his knowledge of turkey hunting with the masses and help others be more successful. Toward that end, Scott has produced lots of tools to help you become a better turkey caller including his DVDs, Mouth Call Magic 1 & 2, and his app, Turkey Tech which is available in the App Store and Google Play. The turkey tech app features how-to videos featuring Scott using both friction and mouth calls, live turkey recordings, and a recording feature that allows you to record your own calling and compare that to the calls of wild turkeys.

Whitetail

In this podcast Todd Shippee from Empire Land Management and Jon Teater from Whitetail Landscapes explore some of the best hunting access techniques for land managers. Todd discusses what he has been working on at his client’s properties. Todd dives into some provisional strategies for hunting access. Sometimes the best hunting hack can be a temporary consideration of planting various plants to see how deer react before going full bore into implementation. Jon suggests thinking about these decisions over time and thoroughly evaluating your options.

The contributor’s breakdown flat, hilly and mountainous terrain differences as it relates to access. Jon breaks down how he uses saddles for hunting access and key techniques to eliminate deer interest in certain terrain settings. Todd discusses how deer may feel too confined when we develop trails, and this can put deer off from traveling down locations we prefer. Both discuss how some techniques can create more predator opportunities. Todd explains some very simple and effective tips to get in and out of the treestands that allow for more hunting success.

Both contributors’ breakdown key plants that support hunting access, and how to create layering across the property. Todd and Jon talk about how to get deer closer to their treestands while considering access. Jon explains buffering zones and how certain plants allow him to create effective access. Todd and Jon provide more permanent established practices (i.e. berms, ditches) to help support hunting access. A new concept like introducing berms or other features may create more usable, huntable space across the landscape. Todd ends with some very key access tips, and both contributors explain a hunting hack that you can use on your property and at remote hunting camps in the big woods

For the second week of our coyote series, the Missouri Woods & Water podcast has Chris Robinson with the Night Crew on to talk about hunting coyotes utilizing lights.

First, Chris gets into how he got into hunting coyotes and the history of their show and the evolution of the different light types they have used has gone. The Night Crew is very successful using white lights hunting, but Chris talks about how that isn't necessarily what might be best for each hunter and how it really depends on what light color gives each individual hunter the best view of the coyote more than it is what is told to them. He gives great pointers on how to use lights as sort of a curtain for the shooters so the dogs can't see what is going on behind the light. We also talk about how lights are a great tool to use in conjunction with thermals and it's not really an "either or" type of thing. And, as always, we go down a few rabbit holes like Chris' favorite rifle calibers, rounds, etc. This is another great episode showing new night hunters another option that is certainly more affordable than thermals. Thanks for listening!

With one buck in the freezer and another tag in his pocket, Dwayne began searching for a larger buck to help his teams standing in the Bowhunting League competition. With his teammates both getting nice bucks of their own, Dwayne had the most room for an upgrade. On last week’s episode, we began to prep everyone about the reality of food plotting challenges in 2022. The herbicides we typically use may be in short supply and expensive, and fertilizer won’t be much different. Mitch mentioned that planting a summer cover crop as a “green manure,” which will release nutrients mined by plant roots to the soil’s surface when terminated, as being a viable option. This is not a new concept to agriculture, but it’s begun to gain more traction in the food plot community. With that, this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman is going to branch off into a bit more detail about green manure in food plots with Tad Dalgewicz.

Tad is a spokesman for the Whitetail Institute and does seminars throughout the east coast. He has an intensive background in agriculture, and between his part time farming and food plotting history has nearly 30 years of experience. He discusses a new product released by the Whitetail Institute called “Revive” and how this product along with a green manure planting system can be utilized. Tad is one of those guys that when you chat with him, it’s plain to see he has intense passion for food plots and managing soils in a sustainable way. Tad is no stranger to relating his food plotting to quality hunting, and has taken numerous wall-hangers in Pennsylvania. With that passion, be prepared for Tad to go on some tangents about food plotting, property management, hunting strategy and more! You may find some of the information in this episode to be a little over your head if you are new to food plots. But rest assured that the information from Tad’s mind is quality mixed with quantity!

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Colorado mule deer fanatic Joel Crisman. Joel is a self taught western hunter that is passionate about chasing monster mule deer in Eastern Colorado. Dan and Joel talk about strategies for finding, stalking and

Joel’s outdoor journey started in Iowa fishing for catfish and hunting small game and birds as a kid. After graduating HS he left Iowa to go to college at the University of Southern California on a football scholarship which then led him to play in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Joel has always had a fascination with hunting the West for elk and mule deer, but it wasn’t until he moved to Colorado in 2001 that he started chasing his hunting dreams. “Colorado has just about everything that a person could wish for”. He immediately started hunting elk, waterfowl and upland birds. In 2002 he got his first pointing lab named CJ and his first bow. He started hunting the eastern plains of Colorado for mule deer. Joel had 20 seasons of failures and near misses. After learning from his mistakes and investing in better equipment he has now connected with a number of very large mule deer. “After a number of years I honed my skills. I learned how to glass, judge size, stalk etc. I have killed a number of large mule deer. Now I will pick 1 or 2 bucks a year that I chase with my bow”. Joel is also a part time deer/antelope guide for his buddy Jim Hubbard at Eastern Colorado Outdoors. Besides chasing mule deer he also archery hunts for elk, bear and antelope in Colorado.

Big Game

Whitetail

On this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public about map scouting for whitetails. Map scouting has become an indispensable tool for serious whitetail hunters. Mapping apps allow you to dissect aerial and topo imagery to locate potential bedding areas, feeding areas, and travel routes the deer prefer. Until you actually put boots on the ground, it’s all just an educated guess. But being an effective map scouter can make you far more efficient when off season scouting or when actively hunting.

Every year, Zach and the rest of the THP crew travel the country chasing deer, turkeys, and other game in new and unique places. Their intense travel schedule means that they rely heavily on map scouting both in and out of season. It also means they have gotten really good at recognizing those terrain and habitat features that deer tend to gravitate to, no matter the region they’re hunting. In this episode, Zach shares some of the things that are consistent when it comes to map scouting no matter where he hunts. The next few episodes of the How to Hunt Deer podcast will explore map scouting different terrain types in greater detail, and how you might approach map scouting a little different depending on where you hunt.

Jeff is the Deer Program Specialist for the State of Wisconsin. Each year, the DNR puts out reports based on harvest data and randomized hunter surveys. The DNR is currently compiling this information for release in March. Early indications point to good harvest numbers despite a slower opening weekend, low numbers of hunting accidents, and some interesting trends regarding hunters’ harvest decisions.

Overall, the last three years have been atypical for Wisconsin deer hunting. While there may be some conclusions to be drawn from the data, it’s simply too early to suggest meaningful trends based on the last three seasons. In this episode, Josh and Jeff discuss what can be learned from the data, how the state gauges hunter experience, and how YOU can get involved at the local level with County Deer Advisory Councils.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by The Intrepid Eater, Adam Berkelmans. Adam is a self taught cook who has a passion for wildgame, growing and foraging, and making amazing dishes out of both. Together, these guys chat about some deep topics related to self-sustainability, responsible meat-eating, and finish up on a fun way to serve wild game, in sushi rolls. All this and more on the next episode of Huntavore.

Adam Berkelmans hails from Ontario, Canada. He took his passion of hunting, fishing, and foraging and mixed it with love of cooking. Taking on the title of Intrepid Eater, Adam shares that with a little creativity, some self taught practice, and an adventurous spirit, wild game can be just about any dish that you desire.

Adam leads the discussion on an idea of responsible meat-eating. The thought is, if you only eat the most desirable cuts without the rest of the animal, then the waste and discarded parts would surpass what is taken. Head to tail eating of animals, not only provides a wealth of nutrients, but also stretches the use of that animal. Both Nick and Adam agree that if we are going to spread this idea, it has to be done by sharing recipes, encouraging others to try new things, wagging a finger and telling someone to keep their livers without first creating motivation would be not good.

On a lighter note, Nick asks about wildgame sushi. Adam has made several variations of what closely resembles Kimbap (Gimbap) , a Korean version of sushi, but with cooked and pickled items, rather than raw, in traditional sushi. The Crappie and Chips rolls he made was to stretch the use of one fish. Being notorious for not freezing well, Adam didn’t want to freeze the fish, but fried in a tempaura batter, followed up with fried potatoes and rolled it all in sticky medium grain rice and sushi seaweed paper. No special equipment is needed. Adam does have a bamboo sushi roll pad, but Nick plans to use a placemat. Use your inner McGyver to achieve the task. Want something else? Nick and Adam brainstorm that ground can be used as long as it’s cooked first as a burger patty, and slow braised meat can be placed in a line that holds itself together.

Sushi in itself is a full course in meal prep and presentation. All the elements are cut and sliced, raw ingredients cooked or pickled, and assembled so everything is square and can be sliced. Not the most efficient method, but for bringing some fun to the party, wildgame sushi is the perfect party meal. World Wide Dream Hunts

Big Game
Bowhunting
Conservation

Did you know there are African safaris that are more affordable than a trophy elk hunt? Mckenzie Sims of Hunterz Hub is this weeks guest on the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast. Mckenzie has been fortunate enough to hunt all types of game from across the world. Originally from Wyoming, he has hunted more common destinations like Africa and New Zealand, but has also ventured into less touristy corners of the globe like Russia and even Pakistan. Mckenzie loves hunting far away places, and has a passion for helping others experience these hunts that many consider out of their grasp.

John and Mckenzie talk about some of the main hurdles that stand in peoples way from booking one of these dream hunts. They also talk about ways to navigate those hurdles, and make them less daunting. They discuss hunting Africa in quite a bit of detail since it is one of the more popular destinations, but Mckenzie also suggests some other destinations and game species that might interest someone looking for a more out of the ordinary experience. Also covered in the podcast are travel tips for taking a gun or bow abroad, and tips on how to get your trophies back to you in good condition.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Food Plot Prep with Herbicides, Fertilizer, and Clover Management

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

With warmer temperatures approaching, cabin fever is beginning to wear off. Spring will be here before we know it, and too often food plot planters stall to prepare for planting and maintaining their fields. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch shares detailed information for clover plot management, as well as weed control and fertility concerns everyone may face in 2022. To start, proper clover plot establishment and management is not always well addressed. Due to this, many spring planted clover plots fail due to the lack of context. Soils need to be properly prepared with no established weeds, and most importantly, need to be planted earlier than most would think. In addition, knowing what herbicide you can use on clover and the appropriate times is equally as important for maintaining longevity in established plots. Prepare for note taking!

The forecast of glyphosate herbicide availability in spring is uncertain, and the supply that is available may be significantly more expensive than normal. These challenges may lead to alternative measures. Mitch dives into his plans for how he will address last year’s fall planted plots with significantly less, or no glyphosate applied, and also without using tillage. This will require biological controls that choke out weed competition. Finally, Mitch scratches the surface on how fertility can be built overtime with little to no commercial fertilizer, as 2022 will prove to have abnormally high fertilizer prices. Plan now, and success will come in fall!

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Jon Peters and his daughter Gracie about getting future generations involved in outdoor activities. Gracie is a nine year old spitfire of an “outdoorsgirl”. She loves naming both her weapons and the animals that she pursues. Gracie decided a year ago that she wanted to hunt. Although her parents never thought it would last, it has quickly become her number one passion. Gracie has been covering her wall with mounts, her shelves with hog skulls and sharing stories from the field with her friends ever since. She is now a year older, has built two rifles, harvested two deer and a hog. She has been on several well known hunting media platforms and has big plans for the future. Grace hopes to connect with a buck this year, and is looking forward to starting archery. If you are interested in what hunting can mean to future generations, this episode is for you!

Benefits and Pitfalls of Spring Scouting

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett discusses six benefits of spring scouting but also six pitfalls of spring scouting. It's never a bad idea to get out in the woods and cover some ground in early spring before the woods green up. But there is a risk to putting too much stock into certain aspects of what you learn. In years past, Garrett had chosen to hunt areas almost entirely off of intel gained in the off-season, which can be fine during certain times of the year, but could be wasting time in others without paying attention to additional contextual clues.

Southern Ground - Mountain Food Plots, Topography & Mature Buck Behavior with David Miller

Big Game
Turkey
Whitetail

This week on Southern Ground Hunting we're talking with David Miller of West Virginia. We don't get the opportunity to talk about land management too often. Public land hunting really doesn't give a hunter the opportunity to do much in terms of land management. However, this week we're changing it up and covering David Miller's strategies for whitetail land management in mountain country.

The southeast is scattered with hills and hollers, with parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North & South Carolina having legitimate mountains. One thing that landowners in these areas continuously talk about is the lack of ability to really cultivate those properties to grow giant whitetails. Whether it's bad soil, lack of sunlight, or just difficult to get planting equipment in there, there's a lot of reasons for this. This results in lack of nutrients and creates very nomadic deer movement. You may get mature bucks passing through, but they're going to be on the move. David tells us about the things he does to ensure that a buck has everything they need year round to live on his properties, and it's easier than you might think!
