Driven for Big Whitetails and Big Purpose

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy
Habitat

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are joined by Brad Hruska from Driven Purpose Outdoors.  Brad is a hard working school teacher with a desire to hunt like the rest of us.  Brad is particularly fond of pursuing big whitetails in PA, OH, and anywhere else he can grab a tag.  He is also kind enough to take us with him by filming and sharing his hunts.  But his reason for sharing his hunts are slightly different than you may be used to.

Filming your hunts is work, and hard work like this can be a way to provide income.  With something as ego driven as hunting, it can also be a way of promotion and status in the hunting media.  Brad's focus is promoting the glory of his hunts to God.  Brad's faith in Jesus Christ has led him to using hunting and filming as a ministry tool.  Brad and Mitch discuss the journey of this ministry, and the battles we face as hunters who are also husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons.  Being relationship driven amidst a self seeking interest like bowhunting is difficult, but through the grace of the Lord, Brad has been able to experience and share some cool stuff!  What better way to celebrate this time of year? Merry Christmas!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is joined by A.J. Lewis of Ohio to talk about his passion for bowhunting whitetails. A.J. and Dan kick off the episode by chatting about his job and how it has led him to live in two really good whitetail states, Kansas and Ohio. While A.J. was living in Kansas he took advantage of buying their lifetime hunting license. Now, living in Ohio, A.J. can skip the non-resident applications process and hunt in Kansas every year. Next, A.J. talks about about 3 major adjustments he made to his bowhunting strategy that led him to more encounters with mature bucks. Conversation includes, access routes, less time in the woods is better than more, and of course getting ultra mobile with a saddle. Another fun episode with a serious  hunter who has a full time job, family, and limited time to hunt... ENJOY!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Rocky Burrus (SA Farm Management Service) discuss next level habitat and hunting techniques that allow you to kill the biggest bucks in your area. Rocky discusses off season work and opportunities he creates to improve properties and gain access to new land.

Rocky provides secrets and intimate details on what separates the properties he improves for habitat. Rocky explains how to best work with neighbors and what information he provides to ensure neighbors are considering his technical approach to managing for larger bucks. Rocky and Jon discuss the examples of why and when to pass deer and how the mindset to get to the next age class requires building a property and the deer quality.

Rocky details hunting less and sometimes the best advice is to not hunt your property for several years to build deer interest. Jon explains the concept of building a bank account for deer to improve the property from a long-term standpoint. Rocky details the strategy to harvest a single deer with multiple years of intel and why he doesn’t rely on apps to help support his decision to hunt an individual deer. Rocky and Jon explain client mistakes and be more aware of your decision making process to improve your property to ensure it benefits your deer.

Nick Otto of the Huntavore podcast joins John this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Nick made the long trip from Michigan to Oklahoma last spring to help John with his wild hog problem and try to debunk a few of the myths around cooking wild hog. After the hunt, Nick butchered the hogs into larger primal cuts to take back home and work his magic. It wasn't long before he was sending John photos of beautiful pork that would rival anything you can buy in a grocery store.

Thick cut pork chops, bacon, cured hams, and whole smoked pigs just to name a few of the cuts he tried, and all of them turned out great. Nick also kept track of the size and sex of the hog just to make sure there wasn't any added bias in the results. If you have ever been interested in doing something with all those wild hogs other than throwing them in the ditch, you really need to check out this episode!

Today’s show opens up with Brad talking about finding all your Christmas needs for the gun enthusiast in your life over at GunBroker.com! We talk about firearms and hunting related items we’ve received for Christmas throughout the years and Brad tells us a story about a firearm related Christmas tradition. Brad then dives into his recent hunting trip out to his urban hunting spot. He went out for a morning hunt that didn’t pan out besides seeing a doe so he decided to move his stand to a different spot on the property. Make sure to listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all about our weekend hunting!

Next up Dan tells us about his quota hunt at Taylorsville Lake. He saw a few does early but didn’t see a deer that he wanted to take while he was there. He ran into another public hunter who he had an interesting interaction with that had laid out some of the same places as him that he wanted to hunt, so they compared scouting notes and both found a good place to hunt! He bounced around a few spots but unfortunately kept running into non-hunters on this public property that ruined a few really nice potential spots.

Closing out Jacob tells us a quick story about finding a nice whitetail buck dead at a city park in Louisville while he was trail running. All the way back on the trail he spots a large group of vultures so naturally he goes to investigate what they’re back in there for. He then stumbles across a very nice whitetail buck that had been dead for a few days. It was a really nice mature 8-point buck that anyone would’ve been happy to take!

He discusses how it was a right of passage when he finally was able to go hunting, and how he felt a part of something bigger.

Fast forward to present day Rod and Nate are able to reflect on the major differences in Michigan hunting. They both have first hand experience with hunting a more balanced deer herd along with seeing a higher class of bucks to chase each fall in the mitten. On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking with Cody from Walther, Dan Hood from GoWild, and Caleb from Commando Bond all about Walther and their connection to James Bond. We open up with Caleb telling us about his new book he is curating that tells the entire history of James Bond. This book will be a one stop shop for all things Bond, covering history from the novels all the way through cinema. His book will feature interviews with Bond authors, conversations with the brand behind Bond’s tools, and have real world stories that are tied to the Bond firearms. Make sure to tune into this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all about it and all about Bond’s history with the Walther PPK.

Next up Cody dives into Walther’s perspective of the PPK being the “James Bond Gun”. Obviously one of the most recognizable firearms in cinema history it makes Cody’s job in marketing a little bit easier for sure. He credits the success of the Bond franchise as one of the main reasons the PPK has had the shelf life longevity that it’s had so far. We also dive into other firearms that James Bond has carried through the years including some of the firearms associated with Bond in novels. During the 1980’s after an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Princess Anne when her bodyguard carried a PPK that unfortunately jammed, the Bond novels started seeing a mix of different firearms. We went through an FN 1910, a few HK models, and then on to the ASP 9MM for 15 novels. We speed up to the 1990’s with the first American, Raymond Benson, writing for the James Bond novels. In his eyes the PPK was always attached to Bond and within the first chapter of Benson’s first book the PPK was back in the hands of Bond where it belongs!

Closing out we talk the most recent bond films and how they incorporate the PPK into the scenes. Caleb tells us his absolute favorite scene possibly ever in a Bond film that incorporates the PPK in the most perfect way possible! Everyone was a beginner at some point in their bowhunting career.  Some of us had an advantage with experienced mentors, others learned from the school of hard knocks.  This week's episode we are joined by listener Tyler Murray.  Tyler grew up hunting with his family, but took on the journey of bowhunting whitetails by himself at 16 years old.  He navigated television and the internet like many of us do trying to learn and consume deer hunting knowledge and entertainment.  Each year has led to Tyler being more and more successful.

We navigate Tyler's rollercoaster bowhunting journey, from starting out bowhunting his rifle stands, to being relentless scouting and mobile hunting.  This season Tyler connected on a dandy buck in archery season with minimal hunting time available.  We discuss how Tyler chose his set-ups wisely to allow for quality sits on limited time.  Tyler shares the emotions experienced after all the pieces fell into place for this great buck.  It's an episode which both novice and experienced bowhunters can appreciate!  Tyler has worked hard to accomplish his goals - many of us can relate!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 203 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by my good friend Aaron Hepler from PA.  Aaron had an eventful 2023 hunting season that had a ton of ups and downs in it.  From having a bunch of encounters with bucks, clipping a buck, to being at full draw and having another hunter walk in to spook the deer while at full draw and to finally filling his buck tag opening morning of the rifle season.  Aaron shares it all during this episode!

We led things off by talking about what Aaron would rate this past season.  Aaron shares how much pressure he saw and what he believes it did to the deer in the spots he hunted. From there we get into the obstacles he faced and we actually discuss a little bit about my success this year.  One key topic that I enjoyed talking with Aaron about was finding balance during the season.  I think this is a critical aspect that might not be shared as much as it should.   Again, we get into these topics and a whole lot more in this episode!  Stay safe in the woods and enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

This week on Michigan Wild Nate goes through some data to see what the difference is between Michigan and other states he hunted this fall.  Nate does believe Michigan can compete with the other midwest states with high quality hunts. However there are some challenges Michigan faces after looking at some of the data.  High hunter numbers along with a skewed buck to do harvest are some of the glaring differences Michigan hunters face.

He headed in and took a separate route than he normally would, when all of a sudden he started getting a no oil warning on his car! He made a quick loop back downhill but lost power on the way, so he had no other choice but to start downhill on foot! Make sure to tune in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear how this all panned out for him!

Next up Brayden dives into a new expenditure for himself – guiding a hunt! His uncle expressed some interest in hunting with him this season so he took him out for a nice evening rifle hunt overlooking a field into the woods. They got set up in their spot and the action started quickly with a buck cruising through the woods next to them, however they didn’t get enough of a view for a shot. Rain moved in on them so they decided to ease on out and they saw a ton of buck sign on the way out. Rub, after rub, after rub! They use the rain to cover them walking out and ease out slowly, when all of a sudden there’s a buck 15 yards from them! Tune in to hear how this encounter turned out!

Closing out Jacob gives a run down on his season so far which has been a bit of a bust including two misses by him that should’ve been a good buck down! He planned his recent weekend out hoping to turn his season around and have a little more luck! Early morning right after sunrise a couple of does came behind him and then circled back down the tree line. His plan was to swap spots after a little bit of time goes by, so he gets up and starts walking to the next spot when all of a sudden a buck comes out of the tree line! Unfortunately, he was caught completely out in the open with the sun shining right on him!! What do you guys think happens next?

Black Rifles & Green Eyes | Night Vision History & Evolution

Whitetail
Strategy

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking black rifles and green eyes, otherwise known as night vision. We start out talking about the first true generation of night vision – the starlight scope. Usually used in special purpose missions, they looked like a giant spotlight and mounted generally on an M1 Carbine. Thankfully, we’ve made huge advancements through today’s 3rd generation night vision. Make sure to listen in to this episode brought to you by GunBroker.com, to hear an in-depth conversation on night vision and thermal optics!

Next, we dive into night vision hunting which has skyrocketed in popularity for game like wild hogs. Make sure you check into your local game laws however, because this isn’t legal everywhere and there are some rules you need to make sure you follow. We also dive into the difference between green and white phosphor, which have major differences between them. White phosphor provides a large jump in optics with visuals being way more crisp compared to green phosphor. We also discuss the differences between night vision and thermal optics. Night vision optics absolutely cannot be used during the daytime due to how they process light, but thermals absolutely can be used during the daytime. However, your image will certainly not have as much clarity on your targets if the temperature differences aren’t as high like during the nighttime. A huge use case for thermal optics is in the recovery of game animals. Thermal optics provide terrific blood tracking capabilities that can help provide trackers with fantastic recovery efforts, including seeing the downed animal.

One of the downfalls of night vision is that depth perception gets thrown off quickly. However, with that being said, a lot of that can be trained out with serious training time and as always, it’s way better to have night vision if your enemies do not! Closing out, Allen dives into the different options for night vision at GunBroker.com. He covers a multitude of different options from the cheap end to however much you’d like to spend, there are options out there for you whether you want to outfit your helmet or your firearm.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 202 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by two PA brothers Andrew and Doug Huegel. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with these guys.  Andrew owns Huegel Taxidermy out of Lebanon & Lancaster County.  Doug on the other hand owns Huegel Design Co. where he does logo design, branding and illustrations.  Both are extremely talented individuals and avid hunters.  We have a fun conversation about building their brands, and growing as hunters!

We led things off by talking about how Andrew and Doug got into hunting since they had a unique experience with it.  We get some fun hunting conversations going and one that I found interesting was hearing from Andrew about when business picks up for him at his taxidermy.  He shares how he correlates the success with weather, etc.  Doug shares the improvements that he has made regarding his mobile set up and trying to get his first PA buck this year. Again, we get into these topics and a whole lot more in this episode!  Stay safe in the woods and enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch chats with John Royer from Leatherwood Outdoors.  This YouTube channel is one of the original channel's you could find Pennsylvania hunting content before many people were doing it.  We dive into John's evolution of flintlock hunting and how he took on the challenge gaining proficiency with this weapon.  Many call this gun the "flinch-lock" due to people's reaction to the pan powder flash.  Overcoming this obstacle was a huge gain in John's accuracy.

We discuss how filming these late season hunts requires a great deal of energy.  John will often do reenactment hunts where he dresses in 1700s attire and sneaks through the frontier in search of whitetails.  We discuss projectile efficiency on game down-range and also how to properly maintain a flintlock for consistent firing.  Practice, practice, practice, and you can be ready for the last chance of whitetail hunting the day after Christmas!

The 2% Buck

This is a very special episode for John, and one he wasn't sure he would ever get to record. On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John gets to tell the final chapter of an eight and a half year old deer affectionately known as... The 2% Buck. The story goes all the way back to 2017, when John got a trail camera picture of a beautiful clean 10 point 3 year old. Later that year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, he watched that buck work its way through a saddle and happily let him go, knowing he might turn into something special in the future. Little did he know at that moment that this very buck would drive him crazy for the next five years!

After years of obsessing and hunting the big 10 point, on the Saturday after thanksgiving, in the very spot he got that first trail camera picture 6 years before, John was able to catch up with the 2% buck. The name came by accident, when John jokingly gave himself only a 2% chance of killing the buck because of the fact he was so nocturnal and lived on land John did not have access to hunt. However, after years of habitat work and studying the deer, John was finally able to kill the monarch 6 years after first laying eyes on him.

Nate and his son Henry sit down on this Episode of Michigan Wild and talk about Henry's first buck. Henry is 7 years old and has been tagging along with Nate for years. Henry has always enjoyed helping with food plots and looking for sheds, so he has been no stranger to the hunting lifestyle. This spring going into summer Henry showed a desire for shooting his first buck. After getting comfortable shooting a firearm and feeling confident in himself Nate agreed he was ready to go hunting.

November 15th was Henry's first sit and he was faced with adversity right away. He had an opportunity on a buck, but unfortunately his shot was low and ended up wounding the deer. However Henry remained positive and stayed hunting. A few days later the buck did show back up on camera which confirmed that it wasn't a fatal hit. Then on Thanksgiving day all the hours on stand and patience paid off for Henry.

Today’s show opens with Dan diving into his recent camping and hunting trip to Land Between the Lakes. He has been scouting this place all Fall leading up to the opener of rifle season with quite a few really nice bucks on camera. He covers his entire trip including what deer he saw and why he passed on certain ones. He put some Tink’s Bombs out to hopefully attract a nice mature buck and immediately saw a few does, leading him to believe he was definitely in the right spot. Be sure to tune in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear exactly how his hunt came out.

Next up a little excitement, Arica gets a trail cam photo of a very nice buck while we were in the middle of filming this episode! She has quite a few nice bucks that she’s after this season but unfortunately this one cruised by while she wasn’t in the stand. She then dives into her recent hunting story about having a really nice buck come in while she’s on the stand – in bow range! You’ll have to listen in to hear what played out.!

Closing out Brayden dives into going out to deer camp with Tucker. The morning seemed to be full of deer movement with him hearing a good bit of shots on the public land bordering next to them. Tucker ended up having some success with a buck that he and Brayden then had to drag back out before cleaning because they didn’t want to ruin the area for the next day! He ended up going to a different spot the next day and enjoyed all the luxuries of a ladder stand that he hasn’t enjoyed in some while due to mostly bow hunting. He settled in nice and comfortable and before he knew it he could hear deer coming through the woods to him. He had some success very quickly, but you won’t believe how it turned out! The last trip out into the woods he saw a really nice buck that moved through a little too quickly, but thankfully went right over to Tucker and his dad, the buck was shot but the tracking job got a little complicated!

Deer Camp & Cut Night

Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick and his buddies have a standing tradition of a one night only deer camp at a cabin in the woods.  The night is as much about getting together as it is actually hunting for deer.  Hitting whitetail season hard in archery, the more social and less stressful feel of firearm season is a reprieve.  Along with a healthy dose of beer and booze, the food spread is always a winner.  This year, the archery killed deer hearts were marinated and seared for tacos.  New adds were bear sausage and backstrap from Mitchell Shirk, and wild boar bacon.  All were huge wins with the crew.  The second event was a needed cut night at Huntavore HQ.  5 does taken by the group, and lots of processing was needed.  Each guy had a set plan for how they wanted their deer done.  Some wanted more roasts and steaks, and others wanted mostly ground material for sticks and sausage.  I kept my deer back for cutting with my son, and more “fancy” cuts.  The experience of cut night is both an amazing night of fun and laughs, but also a bit of slip in quality of cutting.  It's a balancing act, you want to get the most out of the harvest, but you also want to harvest as much of the fun as possible.

The Most Controversial Round – The 6.5 Creedmoor

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking one of the most controversial rounds out today – the 6.5 Creedmoor, with both Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles. No matter what side of the fence you sit on pertaining to the 6.5, we may make you mad by the end of this episode! Starting off, Allen goes into a little background on the 6.5, its creation, and how it got to where it is today. Out of the gate, the 6.5 was touted mostly as a long distance paper punching round, but not very much beyond that. Well, Hornady got their hands on it and flipped that stigma on its head. Listen in to this episode presented by GunBroker.com to hear our entire in-depth conversation on the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Up next, Logan dives into the 6.5 even being used for plains game over in Africa, to be clear, for the smaller plains game, definitely not most of the larger ones! We get into how people feel about taking elk with the 6.5, with the general consensus being that the .30 caliber cartridges still reign supreme there, however it is most definitely something that you can do. We go over long range shooting with one of the biggest caveats on the 6.5 being some people overlook shot placement because they believe the 6.5 is the magic round, which may be a large reason why the 6.5 receives so much criticism.

Closing out we go over everyone’s first rifle cartridge, with a few very interesting answers from the crew! We also debate how the 6.5 managed to blow up to be as popular as it is today. From launch, the 6.5 seemed to have the perfect storm for success, and in many ways it most certainly has been. We also go over some other rounds that may be the next sleeper round to blow up like the 6.5 Creedmoor. Do you think the 6.5 Creedmoor is just a fad or around for the long haul?

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh is flying solo to talk about a strategy he's found to be highly effective on pressured ground: hunting pressure funnels.

This strategy isn't flashy, takes a lot of legwork, and depends on lots of hunting pressure. But it sure seems to work! In fact, this has been Josh's primary strategy over the last four seasons, and his encounters with mature bucks have skyrocketed. Tune in to hear how he puts this simple but not easy strategy to work!

Gun season 2023 is now behind us. Whether you filled a tag during the gun season or not, you're likely asking the question, Now what? If you've still got a few bow tags in your pocket, your in luck! There's still plenty of time to chase whitetails in WI! But the bad news is you might have to work a little harder for them. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh and Pierce discuss hunting after the gun season pressure.

Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by friend Phil Holcombe.  Phil is a familiar voice on the show as well as a variety of others and for good reason - he is a well rounded deer hunter and outdoorsman.  From managing micro parcels of private land, to hunting big woods public, he loves deer hunting from the beginning to the end.  This show revolves all around rifle season deer hunting.  Phil discusses his strategies to get around pressure the first few days of season after some close calls in archery.  From here, he and Mitch discuss safe and successful deer drives.  This involves effective communication, leadership roles, set up strategies, and more!  Use some of these tips this year, you won't be disappointed!

Mind Over Matter w/ Mark Belles

Strategy

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 201 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native Mark Belles.  Mark is an avid hunter who loves whitetail and getting out for bear during the season.  Mark had a very quick season this year as far as whitetails are concerned.  By quick, I mean tagging out on his buck on the statewide opener back in September.  Mark is a friend of Tom Runscavage, who is a great friend of mine.  It was great to have the opportunity to speak with Mark and hear certain perspectives on deer and bear hunting and how important mindset plays a role in what we do in the woods.

This episode was originally going to be an episode for the Antler Up Report, however I decided to make this just a regular episode.  We led things off by talking about mindset and how important it is when it comes to hunting.  Over the past few seasons Mark has been pretty successful and he shares what he believes what has led to this success.  One key aspect that Mark brings up is exploring and just being in the woods.  I couldn’t agree more with this and I know it sounds ridiculously simple, but it also means putting in quality time and not just shooting for miles and overall time.  Following this we dive into Mark’s buck success story and a few other topics to finish out this episode!  Stay safe in the woods this upcoming rifle season here in PA!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!
