As many of you know, the whitetail deer can live just about anywhere. In certain parts of North America, especially in heavy residential areas, the deer population is grossly out of control. On this episode of the Nine Finger chronicles, Dan talks with two bowhunters from Pennsylvania about their organization that helps keep the deer population in check. The guys talk about the how the tags are allocated, the population of deer in the areas they hunt, and how they get permission from private property owners to hunt their properties. Another very interesting episode about how people throughout this country find access and hunt deer. Enjoy!

Midseason Update with Charles Admire

Charles Admire joins John this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast for a little midseason update. Charles was on right before the opening of archery season to talk about some of his plans for the upcoming year and a few bucks he was hoping to catch up with. Half way through the season he and John were both able to harvest one of their target bucks, with Charles taking a personal best!

Charles talks about how Texas's antler restrictions have really helped the age class on their property, and how the last two years they have seen a big bump in older age class deer. Those older age class bucks have generally also sported larger headgear, which led to Charles being able to shoot his biggest buck to date. The buck managed to elude him during archery season, but a well timed cold front brought some opening day of rifle season success!

Crazy Deer Adventures!

Big Game
Bowhunting

Strategy

Today’s show opens with Arica’s recent hunting expenditures. It’s been a little slow go but on a recent hunt for the first time ever she heard a buck grunting coming through the woods. Heart pounding excitement kicked in as she heard him coming closer through the woods. A doe walked right past her so she’s super excited waiting on this buck to come right through where the doe did. The buck grunting edges closer through the woods and finally comes to light – unfortunately it’s a button buck!! She sat for a while longer when she heard some more rustling coming through the woods, make sure to tune into this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com!

Next up Brayden talks about his recent hunting trip with Phil on a private farm that really just wants them to take some deer off of it. After tree hopping for a while he finally got settled in when not long after he got a text from Phil that a buck was coming across the field. Brayden drug some Tink’s 69 on the way in and Phil’s buck came in right on a line following the trail. Phil let an arrow fly on this buck and got a good blood trail to start with. Unfortunately, it started to dry up as the trail went on, all the way up to a neighboring property. He let it set overnight and after connecting with the land owner next door he continued his search but unfortunately came up empty handed.

Jacob covers a whole week of outdoor stories that he’s had the pleasure to collect here lately. His first story goes in depth of him chasing whitetail during bow season. The absolute perfect scenario comes to fruition with a really nice 8-point working a scrape line directly up to him. He drew back and…you’ll have to tune in to this episode to hear exactly what happened! He also spent some time in North Carolina on a fishing trip at Deep Creek in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. They had some awesome success starting with a nice brown trout and a few smaller ones as well. Fishing clear water creeks, he got some awesome fishing knocked out on this trip with some real trophy fish being reeled in. Circling back to whitetail he goes over his exciting weekend back chasing whitetail during rifle opener.

Closing out Derek dives into his recent hunting expenditures chasing whitetail. He let a really solid buck walk on opening day that he’s hoping he doesn’t regret later in the season. He gives a great description of his hunting spot to set the scene on just how close he let this deer walk for a second time a few days later! After spending some time watching a small forky chasing a doe back and forth a real nice buck makes his appearance. Make sure to tune in to this episode to hear how his hunt turned out!

Fishing in November?

Fishing

Last episode of November on Michigan Wild this week. An episode all about fishing rivers for steelhead with Shane Rodenburg. Shane has dove into river fishing the last 4 years and is absolutely torn up with it. Nate being an avid hunter is still slightly perplexed why someone would purposely target fish instead of whitetails this time of year.

However the more time Nate spends talking with people who have a passion for fishing the more enlightened he gets. Nate and Shane discuss the many parallels there are between chasing river fish along with whitetails throughout the fall. Scouting and having an adequate amount of time are some important factors that allow guys to be successful at a high level.

You can follow Shane along at misteelheader on Instagram.

There's still a lot of season left. But for many of us, the passing of the rut means it's time to return to the real world. Work, family, holidays, and all those obligations we neglected in October and early November now demand our attention and we simply can't spend the time in the woods like we did earlier in the year. The season isn't over, but it's a great time to reflect on what you've learned, and how you've grown as a deer hunter.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about lessons learned the hard way from their rutcations. Tune in to hear what they got right, what they got wrong, and what they plan to change moving forward.

On this episode of Michigan Wild returning guest Brandon Travis and Nate recap the 5th week of the season. This week was the start of Brandon's bow camp down in Indiana and also the same week Nate's camp headed down to Illinois. Brandon has past hunting experience on this property along with good history of how bucks act during the rut. He breaks down each day and the mindset he had as he arrived on the property.

Brandon eventually settles on an awesome rut funnel that the deer were using and he had the stereo typical rut hunts that every bowhunter dreams about. Paired with the determination to sit all day and go to an area that the deer wanted to be in eventually led to success on the last day of his hunt.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Jason Say from Wired Outdoors.  Jason is a born and raised Pennsylvania hunter that works hard each and every season to fill his buck tag.  We begin by discussing how the content in which he produces over time has changed.  His goal is to make the most relatable content possible to his viewers.  The things you see him do on his show are things many PA hunters can accomplish with a little sweat equity.

Last year in 2022, Jason had an emotional rollercoaster hunt for a deer that was a gross Boone and Crockett buck.  His strategy for this deer was not much different than his others - hunt smart and as often as possible.  However, the grind for this buck was like nothing he had ever experienced.  After over 70 sits for this deer, he was able to wrap his tag around it during PA rifle season.  You can see everything on the Wired Outdoors YouTube channel and be sure to check out All In: A Deer Hunting Documentary - a story for a magnificent PA whitetail.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 200 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and straight up awesome hunter Chad Snader.  I am thrilled to finally have Chad on the podcast!  This is literally like 3 years in the making.  A few years back I was trying to possibly do the mid-season episodes, and asked Chad to come on.  Plans fell through, but we have kept tabs on each other and over these 3 seasons or so I have watched Chad knock buck after buck down, turkey after turkey and this year he had one helluva week in October. So, we discussed his success from this specific week where he notched his PA bear tag, fall turkey tag and buck tag!

Chad and I have a good conversation during this hour where we get an introduction to who he is, what has helped Chad become more consistent with his success over the years and more.  I found Chad to be extremely relatable and I believe you will as well.  Just another great hunter from the state of PA that puts in the work and enjoys himself out in the outdoors.  I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family.  Stay safe in the woods this upcoming rifle season here in PA!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again solo talking about the backend of the rut and what strategy he would use as the chaos of the rut starts to come to an end. Dan talks about continuing to locate and hunt where doe groups are the most active, taking time from actual hunting to do a half or full day of scouting, and thinking outside of the box to put yourself in the best position for the last couple weeks of the rut. Dan also talks about what he would do if he was hunting in a state that has a gun season during the rut. If you are struggling this might be a good time to take a small break to refresh then get back in the woods and finish the season strong before the deer go back to a nocturnal bed to feed pattern.

He started out telling us his first experience ever hearing an elk bugle, what would’ve been a perfect moment kind of got ruined a bit, you’ll have to listen in to see how! On his scouting trip he ran into a few new trail cameras on the part of the public he has been drawn to hunt on, unfortunately he’s going to have more competition than he would’ve liked! Brayden then dives into his recent weekend out public land hunting. He got in the stand super early with a nice overcast so it was completely dark, next thing he knows he looks up and here comes a small twinkle of light through the woods. The next thing he knows there’s two headlights coming through the woods and eventually make their way almost all the way to his tree. He flashed his light for a while until eventually they turned and made their way to a different spot. The morning progressed slowly until his hunt started to heat up a bit. Make sure to listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear the action from his hunt!

Closing out Brayden gives us a rundown on a mysterious blue truck that’s been parked at a public hunting spot parking lot for weeks. Thinking someone maybe left the truck there, things take a very interesting turn when they are loading up the truck ready to go. This whole area has been weird since he started hunting the area, make sure to listen in to just how crazy it is.

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John breaks down his 8 day rutcation, including the Texas rifle opener and 6 full days in Iowa. There was no shortage of bucks in Iowa, in fact John had over 25 different bucks in bow range over the course of 6 days. Finding "the" buck however was definitely a challenge. John gave it everything he had but ended up coming home without filling a tag. That doesn't necessarily mean that his Iowa season is closed though...

John talks about some of the major differences between hunting the midwest and his traditional stomping grounds further south. He was shocked at how similar the breakdown of land was, with your usual ag fields, pockets of timber, and timber lined creeks. One thing that presented a major challenge though was the steeper more rugged terrain that made the wind extremely unpredictable. John was constantly moving and making micro adjustments to his set up, trying to put the wind in his advantage. He did see some really nice bucks, and is counting down the days till his return.

Your Tomahawks are Dull

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is #sorrynotsorry for calling out your freshly cut venison tomahawk steaks.  Like our popped polo collars from highschool, the cut needs an update.  First Nick walks through some best practices to get a proper Tomahawk on the plate.  Then he offers his update to the cut by taking advantage of the colder season to make it into a crusted roast that will be sure to elevate your hard earned wildgame.  Get ready to sharpen up that tomahawk on this episode of Huntavore.

Maybe Nick is leaning on a bit of click-bait on the subject,  Tomahawk style steaks gained popularity in the early 2000’s after a restaurant in New York began serving the cut.  Since then it's been a huge boom by BBQer’s and grillers.  Wasn’t long before the wildgame boys jumped in with cutting their own from deer and elk.  Couple tips when cutting your own are; leave as a larger 4-5 rib roast, and cut portions after resting,  clean the bones completely of meat and tissue; during roast and sear, wrap the bone in foil to keep brilliant white.  In Nick’s opinion the updated version is kept as a roast, and crusts the outside.  After quickly searing the meat and resting, use dijon mustard as a binder and apply your crust mixture before finishing in a slow oven.  A crust mix Nick used was; pistachios, panko bread crumbs, parmesan, salt, and pepper.

Wild Hunting & Poaching Stories With 2 Game Wardens

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking hunting and conservation. Both Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles have backgrounds in serving as a game warden in some point of their lives. We start out this episode diving into poaching. Rick goes into the game warden side of things which includes a conversation on how and what deer decoys they could use to potentially attract a poacher. You may be surprised at the style of decoy they have to use! We talk hunting accidents in different types of hunting for different game, with many of those being firearm related. Make sure to listen in to this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear us dive into how to avoid putting yourself in one of these situations.

Up next, Rick dives into a poaching story from his time in rural Pennsylvania. Having to make a quick stop off the road, he pulls next to a barn that had multiple whitetail hanging. A little while later after a stakeout, he had some fast action that led to an arrest. You have to listen to how crazy this story is. Chris also gives us one of his most memorable cases, when a guy shot fourteen turkeys during spring turkey season. A multi-state investigation led to this guy landing himself in some major hot water!

Closing out, Chris talks about the parts of the job that are gratifying versus the parts of the job that really weigh on you after multiple years as a game warden. A lot of it may not always be black and white even though that’s how it’s presented most of the time. Chris gives an excellent example on this episode, make sure to listen to this fantastic story of his. Allen gives us the rundown on hunting rifle sales on GunBroker.com with most bolt action rifles moving super quick, but if you need that last minute new hunting rifle, head over to GunBroker.com to pick yours up today!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan recaps the second part of his rut vacation and sharing his bowhunting success. Dan talks about how he was at an emotional low coming after not killing his #1 buck the previous week. After taking some time to recover and letting his farm rebound after the pressure he put on it, it was time to get back in the tree and give it another try. Dan talks about how the standing corn played a role in how the deer were moving through the property. Dan breaks down the plan he wanted to implement for the second half of the rut knowing that many of the mature bucks were locked down with does, and anticipating a big rare wind shift. The rest, they say, is history!

Working for Bucks

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

Cort Travis is back on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week with another great story. Some of you may remember Cort as the Oklahoma State University student who killed a 200" buck a few years ago. While this one wasn't quite that good, he is still a heck of a buck and has a heck of a story to go with it. And while two big whitetails are great, the bigger lesson in this episode is that no matter your financial situation, with a little hard work, you too can have a chance at some great hunting opportunities.

Cort's first buck came after getting permission to hunt some land owned by his landlord, and this second buck came from that same property. Being a college student, and now freshly out of college and trying to make a living in this crazy world, Cort didn't have a lot of extra cash laying around to pay for a lease. Instead of giving up or just not hunting however, Cort rolled up his sleeves and made a deal with the land owner to work around the property in exchange for hunting rights. Doing odd jobs and helping work cattle has earned Cort the right to hunt a great property and harvest two fantastic whitetail deer.

Hopefully the coming dip in temperature makes the big deer move. We then pivot to Brad telling us about his recent podcasting experience with Matt Rinella. Him and Matt sit down to debate social media and its place in the hunting industry. One of the biggest discussions they had was over land usage in both private and public land. Listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear Brad dive into some of the topics he covered during his time on the podcast with Matt Rinella.

Brad talks about the power of social media in the outdoor industry. While it can definitely be shown in an unfavorable light he believes social media plays a huge role in educating non-hunters about hunting. Anti-hunting groups have become experts in social media and using it against the hunting industry oftentimes leading the general population wrong by using catchy content to sway uninformed people their direction. We talk about how we can get people into hunting without having to post grip and grin photos after a successful hunt. How do you guys feel about social media use when related to hunting? Make sure to check out this episode to listen to our conversation on keeping the hunting industry in good favor with the non-hunting public.

On this week's Deer Season Special bonus episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by long time friend Travis Bailey.  Mitch and Travis grew up hunting deer and small game together.  We take a trip down memory lane and revisit the story of a buck Travis harvested in 2013 after following along for 3 seasons.  Travis shares that the first two years of trail camera inventory felt like he was hunting a ghost.  He had one late season encounter with the buck in year 1, but chose to pass as the deer had shed one of his antlers.

The story ramps up when in year 3 the camera inventory drastically picks up, as the amount of daylight images increased providing hope.  After harvesting the buck, Mitch and Travis discuss what it was like for each of them to achieve a high level hunting goal of killing a big mature buck of this caliber.  While another deer this size may happen again in the future, the areas we hunt in Pennsylvania don't have this class animal behind every tree each season.  The guys discuss recalibrating their hunting goals and expectations.  This includes a change in hunting scenery, as Travis shares a new passion of hunting bucks on the public land mountains near his home.  This story is one for the record books, enjoy!

Frontiersmen & Flintlocks

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking the frontier time period and the firearms that belong to it. When we talk frontier time period a lot of us think about flintlock rifles. Absolutely beautiful pieces of history and surprisingly efficient, even though most people would think otherwise. We talk with Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles – we start in with how Rick actually makes flintlocks, and how that has influenced the way he hunts. He goes in depth about his journey that led him into the love of creating flintlocks. Rick shares with us some really nice examples of flintlocks that he has built himself, so make sure you tune into this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to see the beautiful examples he brought with him.

Chris brings up the style or school of each long rifle we have on today’s show. The architecture is one key example on how to figure out what school these guns belong to as well as the maker’s signature being on the barrel flat. The style of the gun is a huge factor in finding out where they were created or even where the lineage of the owner came from.

We then delve into hunting with flintlocks. Rick tells the group about Pennsylvania Flintlock only deer season which runs for a two-week span. Most at the table today has at one point in time hunted with a flintlock and Rick tells the group that for the past thirty or so years he has specifically hunted with flintlocks. Chris goes in depth telling about not only hunting with a flintlock, but hunting with a flintlock and a dog. He’s very involved with period hunting and has spent some time using flintlocks with mountain cur dogs. Some of the earliest depictions of flintlocks are drawn with dog chasing game during the hunt.

In closing, Rick goes through the process of creating a flintlock. He delves into how he does the process from cutting the blank wood to hand engraving the finish. He spends countless hours building these beautiful examples of flintlocks. Check him out over at Gobbler Knob Long Rifles to see some of his beautiful work. Michigan Wild

Corey Tart w/ Grand Ciel Lodge

Big Game
Bowhunting
Bird

This episode on Michigan Wild is with Cory Tart from South Dakota. Corey is with Grand Ciel Lodge and is an avid outdoorsman. Corey discusses how he got to where he is today which was a dream come true for him. It came with dedication, hard work and a willingness to leave Michigan.

Not only does Grand Ciel Lodge have great opportunities for Upland birds they also have whitetail and mule deer hunts. Even with an option to have an adventure hunt out of canvas tents.

Overall a great episode getting to know Corey and the opportunities he offers hunters. If you or anyone has had an interest to go on an out of state hunt chasing upland birds or whitetails give Corey a shout!
