Public Land

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again solo talking about the backend of the rut and what strategy he would use as the chaos of the rut starts to come to an end. Dan talks about continuing to locate and hunt where doe groups are the most active, taking time from actual hunting to do a half or full day of scouting, and thinking outside of the box to put yourself in the best position for the last couple weeks of the rut. Dan also talks about what he would do if he was hunting in a state that has a gun season during the rut. If you are struggling this might be a good time to take a small break to refresh then get back in the woods and finish the season strong before the deer go back to a nocturnal bed to feed pattern.

Iowa Tag Soup

Big Game
Bowhunting

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John breaks down his 8 day rutcation, including the Texas rifle opener and 6 full days in Iowa. There was no shortage of bucks in Iowa, in fact John had over 25 different bucks in bow range over the course of 6 days. Finding "the" buck however was definitely a challenge. John gave it everything he had but ended up coming home without filling a tag. That doesn't necessarily mean that his Iowa season is closed though...

John talks about some of the major differences between hunting the midwest and his traditional stomping grounds further south. He was shocked at how similar the breakdown of land was, with your usual ag fields, pockets of timber, and timber lined creeks. One thing that presented a major challenge though was the steeper more rugged terrain that made the wind extremely unpredictable. John was constantly moving and making micro adjustments to his set up, trying to put the wind in his advantage. He did see some really nice bucks, and is counting down the days till his return.

Today’s show opens with Dan’s scouting trip for his upcoming hunt on Land Between the Lakes. He started out telling us his first experience ever hearing an elk bugle, what would’ve been a perfect moment kind of got ruined a bit, you’ll have to listen in to see how! On his scouting trip he ran into a few new trail cameras on the part of the public he has been drawn to hunt on, unfortunately he’s going to have more competition than he would’ve liked! Brayden then dives into his recent weekend out public land hunting. He got in the stand super early with a nice overcast so it was completely dark, next thing he knows he looks up and here comes a small twinkle of light through the woods. The next thing he knows there’s two headlights coming through the woods and eventually make their way almost all the way to his tree. He flashed his light for a while until eventually they turned and made their way to a different spot. The morning progressed slowly until his hunt started to heat up a bit. Make sure to listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear the action from his hunt!

Closing out Brayden gives us a rundown on a mysterious blue truck that’s been parked at a public hunting spot parking lot for weeks. Thinking someone maybe left the truck there, things take a very interesting turn when they are loading up the truck ready to go. This whole area has been weird since he started hunting the area, make sure to listen in to just how crazy it is.

The Huntavore

Your Tomahawks are Dull

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is #sorrynotsorry for calling out your freshly cut venison tomahawk steaks.  Like our popped polo collars from highschool, the cut needs an update.  First Nick walks through some best practices to get a proper Tomahawk on the plate.  Then he offers his update to the cut by taking advantage of the colder season to make it into a crusted roast that will be sure to elevate your hard earned wildgame.  Get ready to sharpen up that tomahawk on this episode of Huntavore.

Maybe Nick is leaning on a bit of click-bait on the subject,  Tomahawk style steaks gained popularity in the early 2000’s after a restaurant in New York began serving the cut.  Since then it's been a huge boom by BBQer’s and grillers.  Wasn’t long before the wildgame boys jumped in with cutting their own from deer and elk.  Couple tips when cutting your own are; leave as a larger 4-5 rib roast, and cut portions after resting,  clean the bones completely of meat and tissue; during roast and sear, wrap the bone in foil to keep brilliant white.  In Nick’s opinion the updated version is kept as a roast, and crusts the outside.  After quickly searing the meat and resting, use dijon mustard as a binder and apply your crust mixture before finishing in a slow oven.  A crust mix Nick used was; pistachios, panko bread crumbs, parmesan, salt, and pepper.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan recaps the second part of his rut vacation and sharing his bowhunting success. Dan talks about how he was at an emotional low coming after not killing his #1 buck the previous week. After taking some time to recover and letting his farm rebound after the pressure he put on it, it was time to get back in the tree and give it another try. Dan talks about how the standing corn played a role in how the deer were moving through the property. Dan breaks down the plan he wanted to implement for the second half of the rut knowing that many of the mature bucks were locked down with does, and anticipating a big rare wind shift. The rest, they say, is history!

Wild Hunting & Poaching Stories With 2 Game Wardens

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking hunting and conservation. Both Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles have backgrounds in serving as a game warden in some point of their lives. We start out this episode diving into poaching. Rick goes into the game warden side of things which includes a conversation on how and what deer decoys they could use to potentially attract a poacher. You may be surprised at the style of decoy they have to use! We talk hunting accidents in different types of hunting for different game, with many of those being firearm related. Make sure to listen in to this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear us dive into how to avoid putting yourself in one of these situations.

Up next, Rick dives into a poaching story from his time in rural Pennsylvania. Having to make a quick stop off the road, he pulls next to a barn that had multiple whitetail hanging. A little while later after a stakeout, he had some fast action that led to an arrest. You have to listen to how crazy this story is. Chris also gives us one of his most memorable cases, when a guy shot fourteen turkeys during spring turkey season. A multi-state investigation led to this guy landing himself in some major hot water!

Closing out, Chris talks about the parts of the job that are gratifying versus the parts of the job that really weigh on you after multiple years as a game warden. A lot of it may not always be black and white even though that’s how it’s presented most of the time. Chris gives an excellent example on this episode, make sure to listen to this fantastic story of his. Listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear Brad dive into some of the topics he covered during his time on the podcast with Matt Rinella.

Brad talks about the power of social media in the outdoor industry. While it can definitely be shown in an unfavorable light he believes social media plays a huge role in educating non-hunters about hunting. Anti-hunting groups have become experts in social media and using it against the hunting industry oftentimes leading the general population wrong by using catchy content to sway uninformed people their direction. We talk about how we can get people into hunting without having to post grip and grin photos after a successful hunt. How do you guys feel about social media use when related to hunting? Working for Bucks

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

Cort Travis is back on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week with another great story. Some of you may remember Cort as the Oklahoma State University student who killed a 200" buck a few years ago. While this one wasn't quite that good, he is still a heck of a buck and has a heck of a story to go with it. And while two big whitetails are great, the bigger lesson in this episode is that no matter your financial situation, with a little hard work, you too can have a chance at some great hunting opportunities.

Cort's first buck came after getting permission to hunt some land owned by his landlord, and this second buck came from that same property. Being a college student, and now freshly out of college and trying to make a living in this crazy world, Cort didn't have a lot of extra cash laying around to pay for a lease. Instead of giving up or just not hunting however, Cort rolled up his sleeves and made a deal with the land owner to work around the property in exchange for hunting rights. Doing odd jobs and helping work cattle has earned Cort the right to hunt a great property and harvest two fantastic whitetail deer.

On this week's Deer Season Special bonus episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by long time friend Travis Bailey.  Mitch and Travis grew up hunting deer and small game together.  We take a trip down memory lane and revisit the story of a buck Travis harvested in 2013 after following along for 3 seasons.  Travis shares that the first two years of trail camera inventory felt like he was hunting a ghost.  He had one late season encounter with the buck in year 1, but chose to pass as the deer had shed one of his antlers.

The story ramps up when in year 3 the camera inventory drastically picks up, as the amount of daylight images increased providing hope.  After harvesting the buck, Mitch and Travis discuss what it was like for each of them to achieve a high level hunting goal of killing a big mature buck of this caliber.  While another deer this size may happen again in the future, the areas we hunt in Pennsylvania don't have this class animal behind every tree each season.  The guys discuss recalibrating their hunting goals and expectations.  This includes a change in hunting scenery, as Travis shares a new passion of hunting bucks on the public land mountains near his home.  This story is one for the record books, enjoy!

This week’s episode is with a couple Ohioans who have experienced their first ever archery deer success this year.  Philip and Peyton share their experiences and how everything came together to help fill the freezer and decorate the wall early this year.  Philip has been archery hunting for a few years, and the stars hadn’t aligned until this year.  Peyton got his first verticle bow buck in the bag this year, with help from big brother.  Both have some great stories to share and provide inspiration for all of us this fall in the woods.

As this show releases we are in the heart of the rut!!!  Time should be good in the woods, and be patient if it hasn’t come together yet this year.  The guys will be back with more up to date reports of what they have seen next week.  Good luck as you get out in the deer (and turkey) woods!

Frontiersmen & Flintlocks

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking the frontier time period and the firearms that belong to it. When we talk frontier time period a lot of us think about flintlock rifles. Absolutely beautiful pieces of history and surprisingly efficient, even though most people would think otherwise. We talk with Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles – we start in with how Rick actually makes flintlocks, and how that has influenced the way he hunts. He goes in depth about his journey that led him into the love of creating flintlocks. Rick shares with us some really nice examples of flintlocks that he has built himself, so make sure you tune into this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to see the beautiful examples he brought with him.

Chris brings up the style or school of each long rifle we have on today’s show. The architecture is one key example on how to figure out what school these guns belong to as well as the maker’s signature being on the barrel flat. The style of the gun is a huge factor in finding out where they were created or even where the lineage of the owner came from.

We then delve into hunting with flintlocks. Rick tells the group about Pennsylvania Flintlock only deer season which runs for a two-week span. Most at the table today has at one point in time hunted with a flintlock and Rick tells the group that for the past thirty or so years he has specifically hunted with flintlocks. Chris goes in depth telling about not only hunting with a flintlock, but hunting with a flintlock and a dog. He’s very involved with period hunting and has spent some time using flintlocks with mountain cur dogs. Some of the earliest depictions of flintlocks are drawn with dog chasing game during the hunt.

In closing, Rick goes through the process of creating a flintlock. He delves into how he does the process from cutting the blank wood to hand engraving the finish. He spends countless hours building these beautiful examples of flintlocks. Check him out over at Gobbler Knob Long Rifles to see some of his beautiful work. Make sure you tune in to this episode and listen to his expertise on flintlocks.

Today’s show opens with us talking about you guess it, hunting! Brayden delves into his recent weekend hunting a new parcel of public land. A brief scouting trip showed a few promising spots for his hunt around a real nice CRP field. He gets set up in an absolute sweet spot with fantastic views, looks around and notices something in the field next to him. Can you guess what it was? A cow – a very large group of cows. Apparently his scouting trip that was super promising was not a sign of deer beds and deer trails but it was entirely made by cows! Needless to say, the hunt was a little slow. The next day he heads out to another public spot hoping for a little more success. Listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to see how his second spot ended up!

Closing out Brad dives into his recent suburban tree farm hunting adventures. He’s been chasing a dandy of a buck, that if he shoots will be his best buck to date. He gets up in his stand and the movement starts early with a few small bucks cruising through by his setup. The next thing he knows, here comes his target buck! He hangs up a little far and dips out in the craziest way Brad’s ever seen. Brad assumed there was no way this deer was coming back but next thing he knows he’s right back within bow range. Greg and Mitch converse over numerous deer hunting stories and experiences.  Greg shares with us a hunt for a buck that took him into firearm season, and when faced with the opportunity to harvest the buck with a gun, chose to let him walk.  This was when he realized that bowhunting was truly at his core.  Greg talks about the various habitat and terrain types he has hunted.  While his heart is hunting in the mountains, Greg shares that one of his more recent challenges is hunting big bucks in the Pine Barrens.  When you spend as much time on public land as Greg, you also can have some unique encounters with people.  Greg has some bizarre interactions with the non-hunting community he shares.

On this episode of Huntavore, that time old topic of; what are you keeping from the gut pile comes up.  Nick employs the help of Poldi Weiland, a traditionalist foodie, homesteader, and host of the Year of Plenty Podcast.  Poldi gives some points in why adding organ meat into our everyday diet is worthwhile.  In addition, the guys open up about bone stock and its uses more than just soups and stews.  So get ready to dig a little deeper, and maybe keep an extra something from this episode of Huntavore.

Poldi Weiland joins in from the great state of Montana.  Born German, Poldi has been back and forth a few times and has experience with hunting cultures both in the Old world and new. After a brief run through of German hunting culture, NIck notices some similarities of traditions held here in the states.  The guys then dig a bit deeper as Poldi explains how organ meat isn't a fad, but honest to goodness real food, for an everyday diet.  In Poldi’s case its more important to get it down than to fluff it up and fancify it.  Mixing it into ground, or even just taking small portions at face value is how he does it.  Bone broth has also been an interest of Nick’s  and Poldi explains the benefits of adding broth or stock to an afternoon drink instead of another coffee.  If you enjoy this conversation, please check out the Year of Plenty Podcast with Poldi Weiland.

National Firearms Act (NFA) & SUPPRESSORS

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking the National Firearms Act and suppressors. When suppressors were first created you could actually order them by mail or even create your own at home if you had the know-how. That sounds absolutely fantastic but, unfortunately, 1934 rolled around and in came sweeping regulations from the American government. While the publicly stated reason for the NFA was the mob, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Allen goes into the creation of the NFA with the case of the United States vs. Miller, which is where this all stemmed from. With the case being thrown out a few times, it slowly crept through the justice system. Listen in to this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear in depth exactly how the NFA came to be.

In this episode we talk more about suppressors and the government regulations behind them. One of those being the requirement for a Tax Stamp for EVERY suppressor that you purchase. Unfortunately, it is not a one-time fee. This amount has been the same since it was first initiated in 1934, which at that time was an astronomical amount of money. Attached to this is the wait time to get it back after it’s submitted, with many people having to wait 8-10 months, which drives some consumers away from trying to own a suppressor. This along with having to get your fingerprints done and sending in forms for every single suppressor you’d like to own, it really makes consumers jump through a ton of unnecessary hoops.

Closing out, we cover moving a suppressor to someone else if something were to happen to you. The real only true way to do this without having to go through the process again is to set up that person in a trust. We also cover the two major changes that happened after the NFA; the Gun Control Acts of 1968 and 1986. These completely changed the way firearms were purchased, with consumers no longer being able to purchase firearms through the mail. It also created a limited supply of machine guns, artificially inflating the cost. Make sure to listen to this episode to get a deep dive into the National Firearms Act and all the changes over the years. If you’d love to get your hands on firing a suppressor without having to purchase one yourself join us coming up soon at CANCON!

Rut Tactics and Pre Iowa Breakdown

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John uses his upcoming Iowa trip to talk about some key whitetail rut hunting strategies. John lists his four keys to being successful during the rut, and then goes through his week-long rutcation plans and talks about how he is going to use those four keys. This is John's first ever true rutcation. John has never hunted whitetails for more than three or four days at a time, but on this trip, John will have at least 6 straight days to chase big ol Iowa bruisers. Or at least he hopes! John breaks down the property he will be hunting a little bit and gives a rough breakdown of his daily plan. While John knows he will have some prime areas to hunt, he is still walking in completely blind, having never actually stepped foot on the property. Aerial scouting and conversations with the land owner are all he has to go on, which should make for a wild and exciting week!

Down In The Holler

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

Today’s show opens with us talking about wild game meat. We discuss what we all have stockpiled in our freezers and ways to extend the life of something like deer hearts in the refrigerator. We also dive into a hunter’s delicacy – spam and Vienna sausages. Dan goes into how to this day he still enjoys cooking spam with some of his meals. We’ve definitely had our fair share of these in the woods. Is spam a part of your go to kit when going for a long sit in the stand?

We also talk about our other ventures such as No Lowballers sponsored by Gunbroker.com. Over there we cover any and everything firearms. With many guests in the firearm industry, it’s a super informative and fun listen. Make sure you guys head over there and check it out, you can catch the audio version wherever you listen to podcast and catch the full video version on Youtube at www.youtube.com/gowildapp.

Closing out we talk about some of the cool new things we have coming at GoWild. One of the things we’ve launched is called Holler Commerce. Holler allows creators to create their own Shop which will allow creators to be supported by their audience purchasing directly from their shop. It removes some of the hoops and jumps that creators currently have to go through with “creator codes”. This will allow the creators to focus more on content while giving their listeners or fans a much easier way to support them through products that you guys are already going to purchase.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

The show launches every Monday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.
