In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about how military technology impacted the way we hunt today. In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about how military technology impacted the way the modern outdoorsman hunts today. We dive in with an integral part of the hunting industry: optics. Allen starts with Leupold, who at one point in time was the largest provider of small arms optics for the US Military. He tells us about the differences between optics that are military spec and optics that are consumer based with some military features. Logan spends some time talking about the Nydar Model 47 Shotgun sight, which is based on a military aviation sight, that was scaled down for shotguns. Next, Allen speaks on military bolt-action surplus rifles that were modified into hunting rifles. These guns were very inexpensive, which led to hundreds of thousands of these guns being sporterized. This conversation led us to Logan sharing a book from 1963, called “How to Convert Military Rifles” or in Logan’s words “How to Destroy a Military Firearm.” These books covered multiple different makes and models of military rifles and every step on how to convert them to a deer gun. Have you ever run across one of these sporterized rifles? We’d love to know if so! Brad brings up the modern sporting rifle field and how the AR-15 is a modern take on sporterizing a military rifle. From small game all the way to big game, the AR-15 has become a staple in the outdoor industry. Offering a ton of customization options and versatility, the AR-15 style rifle has boomed in the outdoors with many companies offering options specifically built for game and ready for consumers to take the woods. We end with a conversation on the first recruits in the Revolutionary War being men who grew up hunting. Brad speaks on how the Lewis & Clark Expedition looked specifically for rugged outdoorsmen and how those skillsets later converted well over to military. Allen ends up going through some amazing options for modern sporting rifles available on GunBroker.com If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!! The No Lowballers podcast is a brand new joint venture between GoWild and GunBroker.com to explore the history and heritage of firearms. We hope to expose you to the vintage guns of the golden age along with newer, modern

guns, specialty items, and a few other odd balls along the way. Jump in and come along for the ride! The show launches every Thursday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.

On this week's episode I was joined by Mr. Kansas Jon Landwehr!  Jon resides in Kansas where over the last three years he has killed TWO 200+ deer and one 170+! This year Jon, Tyler Wilbur and Angelo Giannoi are going to be traveling all over the country filming their hunts for their brand Legacy Pursuit.  We get to hear what Jon has planned and all the stories, lessons and strategies Jon used killing his 3 giant KS bucks!!

We begin this episode by getting an introduction to Jon and hear how he learned the ins and outs to hunting Kansas from a very young age.  From Jon’s description of where he hunts, it is completely different from what I grew up hunting and hunting to this day.  So hearing his style and the strategy for how he hunts these giant whitetails was something I had to hear.   Following this up, we get into breaking down the stories, and the main takeaways for killing his past three bucks.  Two of them shared a similar story in that they were taken early, compared to the one last year Jon had to really grind the year out to finally catch up to him.  In between these stories we hear Jon talk about the buck that he and his son were after and what ultimately led to him not getting a chance at this public land buck.  We wrap things up hearing about Jon’s upcoming plans and what is in store for Legacy Pursuit…..So, tune in and listen to some stories and a fun conversation with Jon!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

This week the guys sit down to discuss what they have been up to.  Paul’s deer season may have come to a screeching halt with one swing of the bat. Learn about how Paul’s homerun may have put him on the IR for the near future.  Both guys spent some time shooting prior to Paul’s injury, as the season quickly approaches.  Reminder that the start of the 2023 seasons is right around the corner with September 1 kicking off some of the first opportunites for small game and such.

The meat and potatoes comes from a great conversation with elite archer Chris Jay.  Chris has worked with the guys over at Working Class Bow Hunter, as well as many other top notch archers in the industry. He’s spent years in and around the archery scene as was nice enough to come on and give some pointers to the guys.  Hopefully you can find some insight that is valuable for you this year in the woods.

Real Hand Cannons, Flintlocks, & Weird Gun Words

Firearms
Strategy

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about handgun history and even let a few weird gun words fly!

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about hand guns including their history and the evolution to today’s gun. Alan jumps right in with a history of hand cannons! Early hand cannons emerged in the 14th century with a flower vase design that necked down smaller. Originally designed for use with arrows, which did not work well, they evolved to anything that hurt being loaded such as: gravel, chain, or nails.

Logan goes through the timeline of early hand guns. Starting with Hand Cannons that were extremely uncontrollable and inefficient. Much of early handguns was trial and error to see what worked or didn’t work. The next evolution was Matchlock which is a very simple design but with a constant lit match it was an extremely limited design. Some of the Matchlock downfalls included being put out by rain, potentially catching your own coat on fire, or even worse – showing the enemies exactly where you are!

Jacob asks an important question about effective range of early hand guns. Allen and Logan bring up the multitude of scenarios that play into that question. Are you shooting nails or chain? Everything out of a hand-cannon would have different effective distances but overall the consensus is if within conversational distance it would be much like the modern hand gun.

We speak on the purpose of early handguns. On the battlefield hand-cannons were more to spook cavalry vs actual effectiveness. When speaking of the wheellock, generally it was more of a boutique “Bar B Q” gun. Owned mostly by very wealthy individuals who had these custom built more as a conversational piece. They were extremely inefficient to shoot, imagine shooting a 2x4!

Next, we’re talking about the flintlock! Allen speaks of some of the flintlocks you can find on Gunbroker.com along with their price ranges. Allen tells us all about the different options for early hand guns. Flintlocks, Wheellocks, Matchlocks, and even Hand Cannons are available at a wide price range depending where you’d like to start your collection. He speaks on the Germanic Wheellock which was the sweet spot of them being produced.

We close the episode with all sorts of weird gun words. Touch-holes?? Nipples?? What are some of your favorite weird gun words?

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!!

October is fast approaching and on this episode of Michigan Wild Nate and Drew Hasler talk about the upcoming season. This is an introduction podcast for Drew to understand his tactics and passion for bowhunting whitetails in Michigan.

They both share a lease in Illinois and are excited for the upcoming fall. Having similar mindsets with how they bowhunt out of state and in their home state of Michigan makes for great conversation.

Drew also has had great success targeting bucks in early October in Michigan. He breaks down the mindset with striking early and setting up his property for that success. That success stemmed from a mindset change and not being afraid of some sweat equity thru habitat improvements.

Bowhunting at a high level is something Drew has done for multiple years and look forward to more episodes with him on Michigan Wild.

It's an action packed show this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast! John starts things off with a bold prediction for this year's deer season you are going to want to hear. After that, Oklahoma State University Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management Assistant Professor Colter Chitwood joins the show to talk about a few research projects he is involved with around the state of Oklahoma and beyond. The first topic the guys discuss is a research project following pronghorn in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Colter and his team have been collaring and tracking pronghorn to learn more about their home ranges, fawn recruitment, and most importantly, whether or not the population is declining or not.

After a nice long chat about pronghorn, Colter talks about another similar research project on wild turkeys. It is no secret that numbers appear to be declining across much of the country and especially in the southeastern United States, and Colter sheds some light on a few reasons why a decline may be taking place, and some practical things hunters and conservationists can do to have a positive impact on those populations.

And just because why the heck not, John and Colter finish the episode off with some good old wolf talk. Colter is fortunate enough to work on a grey wolf population study on Prince of Wales Island off the coast of Alaska. John talks a little bit about his experience with wolves in the north west while in college, and the guys talk about how sometimes the biggest obstacle in managing a species is just how cute they are.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Derek talks all about his recent TN trip public hunting for black bears. He packed on the miles scouting, and eventually found the ideal spot for a bear! Did you know that bears eat yellow jackets? All signs point to yes! Miles on the boots and a little electronic help from the NextDoor app and he had all the signs on where to go!

Do whitetails hate bears? Derek speaks on his trip and how he saw deer signs everywhere he saw signs of bears. His hypothesis is that there’s so few bears compared to deer that they don’t really bother each other. Would you think the bear population would deter whitetail from certain places?

We talk about public hunting and who gets the worm when hunting public land. If you put in the miles your chances of success definitely seem to grow exponentially. Make sure you check OnX, nothing worse than putting the miles in only to realize there’s private land close to where you hiked into!

Hunting season starts just next month for many in the whitetail's range. Stands are being hung, velvet pics are rolling in, and hit lists are being built. Unless you hunt large parcels of primo whitetail ground, you might think that being able to target and hunt specific bucks just isn't a possibility on your property. Well Nate Thomas from the Missouri Woods & Water podcast has been successful doing just that for a number of years on the small parcels he hunts. Though the deer aren't necessarily living on Nate's farms, he's still found a way to build his season around targeting top tier bucks. In this episode, Nate lays out his process for locating, building a plan, and executing when it counts on big bucks.

Machine Gun History, Part I

Big Game
Firearms

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about machine guns including their history and how we got to modern machine guns. Logan gets right into it and dispels a big myth: The Gatling gun is not a machine gun! This helps us define what a machine gun is and what it isn’t. When did the world’s first fully automatic machine gun come out and who invented it? It came out at a pivotal time and completely changed modern warfare. Find out where you can go view some of the earliest machine guns.

In World War I we saw several of these early machine guns enter the playing field, including the Maxim MG0 used by the German army, the Lewis Gun used by American and British troops, and the Browning M1917 used by the United States. These early models were big and heavy and we’re definitely a crew-served weapon.

By World War II we started to see some advancements in technology and a few more machine guns hitting the battlefield, including the Browning M2 used by many nations and the MG42 introduced by Germany and feared by the Allies. We outline the differences between belt-fed, box-fed, and pan-fed guns and which ones were meant for anti-personnel and anti-material purposes. We then move into the Vietnam War era talking about the M60.

Over time, machine guns have become smaller, lighter, and more portable, but many of the attributes from the early foundational firearms are still utilized in today’s modern armaments. Allen jumps in to talk about the design of these different machine guns and how they would dissipate heat, either through water or air cooling, or swapping barrels. Logan mentions that many of these guns were adapted in the field over the years as servicemen figured out how to best use their weapons in innovative ways, like using them in aircraft. When aircraft went from being an observation tool to an offensive weapon, the machine guns went with them.

Jacob asks an important set of questions we all want to know: Can we own a machine gun, where do we find one, and what’s the expected purchase price to buy one? Logan outlines the legalities and what the process looks like. Allen then speaks to the popular machine guns selling on GunBroker.com along with their price ranges. The process is not as intimidating as you think, and while owning a machine gun is not cheap, it’s otherwise just a pile of paperwork and playing the waiting game on the federal government. Another way to get the machine gun look and feel is by picking up a belt-fed semi-automatic firearm, like the FN M249s. Allen jokes about the hardest part of owning a machine gun … tune in to find out what that is!

As usual, we close the episode by hearing from Allen on whatever weird, interesting, and obscure guns have sold on GunBroker this past week!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 185 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by a good friend of mine, Bryant Lyon from America’s Best Bowstrings.  I have known Bryant the last four years and we have a ton in common outside of the hunting world.  It was great catching up with him and also picking his brain on what is happening at ABB/Helix and how he is preparing for this upcoming hunting season. Bryant mainly hunts Ohio and has the opportunity to hunt some great land that starting right now he will begin to keep tabs on for this year. In this episode we dive into various topics covering glassing, handling the moment, overcoming the buck drought, what you should be doing now with your bowstrings and getting your broadheads tuned.

We get an introduction to Bryant and you will hear the two of us catch up about life, fitness and what we currently are doing right now preparing for this upcoming season.  Bryant shares how ABB is extremely busy right now and some new items they released to help us bowhunters.  To go along with the chat, Bryant shares some key technical attributes that ABB offers with their strings that I believe is overlooked when it comes to great arrow flight.  So, tune in and listen to some whitetail stories and a fun conversation with Bryant!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Trevor is a southwest Oklahoman who has a passion for whitetail deer and is fortunate enough to get to hunt elk on a consistent basis near the Wichita Mountains. While the terrain and some behavior varies, there are also several traits that seem to remain true no matter where you chase mature whitetails.

The second half of the episode focuses on the special and rare Oklahoma elk. Trevor is fortunate enough to have access to some amazing elk hunting opportunities that are hard to find. He talks about the different methods he has used to hunt them over the years, and how they have opened the doors to opportunities in the outdoor industry. Dr. Bradley Johnson and his three friends embark on an annual adventure into the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. The signs at the trailhead caution folks to “Be Bear Aware”, yet in the past, Brad and his cohorts have had only one encounter with a Black Bear. Despite the low odds of an attack, they arm themselves with bear spray.

During the final stretch of the 8 mile hike to their chosen camp site, Brad is anxious to get there and pushes forward, separating him from the rest of the crew. As he begins to crest the final summit, he spots not one, but two Grizzly Bears no more than 30 yards away. Before Brad can formulate a plan to distance himself, he can quickly see they are both in a full charge. As he scrambles to remove the safety of the bear spray, a lesson learned from childhood prompts him to make his next move. A move that very well played a role in saving his life.

As the rest of the story unfolds, it can only be explained as a series of miracles. Brad gives credit to the strength and wisdom that GOD gave to all of those involved in ensuring his survival. This gripping story will have you on the edge of your seat.

Mobster Memories: Tales of the Tommy Gun, Colt 1911, & Other Mob Favorites

Firearms
Big Game

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about guns that have connections … to the mob and organized crime. If you love the mobster scene and the classic mob movies, find out which of these guns you can take home to own yourself from GunBroker.com! What are some of the best mob movies of all time?

We kick things off talking about the Thompson Submachine Gun a.k.a. The Tommy Gun. Is the Tommy Gun the quintessential gangster gun?? Did you know the background of this story starts near Louisville? Kentucky certainly has several more ties to the mob era–find out what other connections those are! Host Logan from High Caliber History recounts the exciting story of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, an event that made the Tommy Gun famous. Also be sure to check out The Mob Museum in Las Vegas to learn more about this and other historic events that shaped American history. Why did the military have no interest in this firearm when they first considered it?

Next, we’re talking about some of the handguns that have been associated with mobsters but also have had their place in the military, like the Colt 1911. Logan mentions a recognizable name in the firearm industry who has a highly unusual, ultra-modified 1911. Allen talks about why mobsters were able to out-gun police and law enforcement. We also take a hands-on look at the Smith & Wesson Military & Police .38 Special, a revolver that eventually went on to become the Smith & Wesson Model 10. We also peeked at a Colt 1903 Hammerless .32ACP. These calibers seem small by our standards today, but in their prime they brought plenty of knockdown power. Brad makes a great point about why both mobsters and military soldiers enjoyed these pocket pistols.

We also talked about the game-changing National Firearms Act of 1934 and how that shaped firearm purchases for the future. This is when the federal government started to place restrictions, and more came with the Gun Control Act of 1968 and then the Hughes Amendment in 1986.

Jared talks about some of the reasoning behind this decline and what needs to be done to rebound.

But it's not all doom and gloom, the guys also discuss what's new from 2% For Conservation like the upcoming Conservation Day and and the new referral program they have rolled out.  If you want to lear more about 2% please visit fishandwildlife.org

The guys are back for another episode, leading closer and closer to the opener of the fall hunting seasons.  This week the guys recap their past week at home and in the field.  Paul is finishing up some… extended projects, while Andrew is fine tuning some set ups for the fall season.

The meat and potatoes comes from a 2 part episode.  Andrew talks with Craig from Hero To the line to discuss the program he has created.  Hero to the Line is an organization that helps veterans adopt Labrador puppies to become working dogs, and best friends.  They will be hosting an event in Bucyrus on August 26.  Visit Hero2theline.org for more information.

The other part of the show comes from our friend Mitch Shirk, aka the Pennsylvania Woodsman, aka Johnny Appleseed.  Mitch is a trained agronomist, and works day in and day out with farmers in the Keystone State.  He is on with the guys talking about fall food plots and some of the ins and outs of what you should be considering in order to bring in the big deer.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Dialing it in w/ Josh Kirchner

Big Game

Whitetail

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 184 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by a good friend of mine Josh Kirchner.  Josh, known as the Dialed in Hunter on his social media accounts, has made a name for himself in the hunting world over the last decade with his hard work and determination.  Josh was a guest on the podcast all the way back on episode 11!  It is awesome to have him on again and catch up with the record button hit.  Within this episode we get into a fun conversation that will not only apply to western hunters getting ready to leave to hopefully fill a tag in the short couple weeks, but also whitetail hunters.  Some key topics we discussed in this podcast are how the goal to be more consistent started his Dialed in Hunter endeavor, his insanely successful 2022 season, going beyond e-scouting, planning on what, where and when to hunt specific states and thinking outside the box on a bow hunt.

We get an introduction to Josh  and how his love for the outdoors really came about.  Moving from NY and hunting AZ with his father.  From here we get into starting his writing career and how getting into this specific space is a difficult one.  From there we dove into some great stories from this past season where Josh was extremely successful.  It seemed like no matter where Josh was hunting or what animal it didn’t take long from him to notch his tag.  Then we get into what Josh does to go beyond just looking at the map and how he leveled up his game when it comes to e-scouting. Following this discussion we get into an article that Josh wrote for GoHunt and how no matter what species you are hunting or where you are located you will get something out of this topic, I promise.

Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Welcome to the 100th episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman!  It's hard to believe it's been 2 years already since the beginning of this show.  Thank you all for your support!  On this week's episode, Mitch is joined by 3 guests he has personal connection to - his father Jeff Shirk, and his two grandfathers Raymond Shirk and Kenny Mengel.  Mitch grew up hunting with these three, harvesting his first deer with them, and hearing all the stories of their hunting experiences at each of their deer camps.

We begin by telling the stories of how each camp began, one of which started out of an old school bus!  We share many stories including first deer, first bucks, first bears, camp comradery, family fun, and more.  You'll get to hear their perspective how deer hunting has changed over the last 65+ years for better or worse.  Stories of changing deer populations, changing hunting dynamics, but all centered around deer camp and those annual traditions that make Pennsylvania hunting heritage strong.
