UNCENSORED by GoWild

End of Turkey Season Finale and Weighted Walleye Cheaters

Bird
Big Game
Turkey
Fishing

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we wrapped up our turkey hunting season. Arica got out again. She did some yelping, scouted around, had some hens come in, and heard a few gobbles. She tried to work the hens wondering if they would get the gobblers to follow. How do deer and turkey use different senses? How important is a locator call for finding longbeards? Why do turkeys shock gobble?

Brayden and Phil got back out on their private piece. They had some birds on camera and gave it one final shot. They fooled with some hens but didn’t find any toms. They also went back to the public property they’ve been hunting and tried to strike something up. They got some gobbles and put the stalk on. Have you ever heard a turkey double gobble? They got set up and had one come in full strut but had an unfortunate mishap … find out what happened!

The guys are planning a walleye fishing trip to Lake Erie along with attending the Walleye Festival. We swap some tips for catching walleye. Catching them takes a little bit of finesse, some technical knowledge, and of course, a little luck and experience. We also talk about the weighted walleye cheaters. Do you think their consequences were enough for their actions?

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

What to know about CWD

Big Game

Whitetail

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John discusses the discovery of the first CWD positive whitetail in Oklahoma. It did not come as much of a surprise to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, as every state surrounding Oklahoma has had a positive Chronic Wasting Disease case in recent years. So what happens now?

This episode is not a scientific evaluation of CWD and its future effects of the Oklahoma deer herd. Instead, this episode is simply meant to inform listeners about what has happened in the past, what is happening in the present, and to prepare Oklahoma sportsmen and women for the future. It's not time to hit the panic button just yet! John discusses the history of CWD in Oklahoma, the recent case that has been confirmed, and a few precautions the wildlife department is putting into place. There will definitely be another episode in the near future with someone who is far more informed than John, but he felt that this news was important enough to be addressed immediately.

On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined again by David Rabe, a California native who takes everything to the next level.  His recreation is extreme, his hunts are for the biggest and the best, and his harvested wild game gets prepared with only herbs and spices that elevate his kill, not clog it with a bunch of additives.  Come along as Nick and Dave catch up on what has happened in the past year, How Kairos is the perfect rub to use on heavily valued harvests, explains the idea of perfect moment, perfect place, and the meaning of Kairos, and finally finishes up with some incredible dish ideas.  It's all come this moment and this time on this episode of Huntavore.

David Rabe is no stranger to the spice game.  David first launched Wilde Seasonings a few years back.  David sought out some partners to grow his brand and get high quality seasonings to home cooks and hunters who want only the best for what they are preparing.  Jiving with the term Kairos; the right critical moment, opportune timing.  Dave has relaunched his original blends along with others to try and cover as many proteins as possible.  Dave is also an accomplished hunter who strategizes the points game in the west.  On the spectrum of meat hunter to horn hunter, Dave is on the far edge of looking for mature animals in highly sought after units.  Which is part of the reason why Dave has spent so much time on these seasonings.  Not every season will bring back a trophy animal, so when he does, it gets the absolute best treatment possible.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Josh Plummer and Devon McDonald about their passion for the outdoors and the reasons that they can’t stay out of the woods.

Josh Plummer grew up in the cornfields of Indiana as an avid outdoorsman. After high school, he attended Purdue University before joining the Marine Corps. He retired in 2019 after seven deployments and currently lives in North Carolina where he is finishing law school at Wake Forest.

Now, he spends every chance he gets hunting and camping with his wife and family. In addition to hunting, Josh is passionate about Veterans Advocacy and the role that hunting plays in helping veterans heal and connect with each other. To help spread that message, Josh and Devon recently started Reasons Hunting to share their passion and talk about the many reasons why we hunt.

Devon McDonald grew up hunting the fence rows and woods of central Indiana. After high school he graduated from Indiana University before joining the US Army. After the Army, Devon attended law school and earned his law degree in 2012.

Devon still lives in Indiana where he spends every minute he can in the outdoors camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting. He is also passionate about Veteran Advocacy, especially veteran suicide prevention and how the outdoors can help veterans overcome adversity. Devon co-founded Reasons Hunting along with Josh to help spread the message of how hunting has helped them as well as to share all the fun that hunting and outdoors have to offer.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 176 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Chad Sylvester of Exodus Outdoor Gear.  This was a great conversation with Chad and one that I haven’t had on the podcast before.  This isn’t like the last time Chad was on where we dove deep into whitetail strategy.  This time around we dive deep into life and how we can be better individuals.

Kicking this episode off, Chad talks about his upbringing and the life experiences he went through by working on his family farm at a young age.  We went from this experience, spending time with his grandfather a lot, who helped mold Chad for who he is today.  I think a lot of us will share similar stories like Chad.  Then we get into the older years when Chad was going through his college recruitment for football and playing at the next level.  This opportunity was unique for Chad because he was able to learn and grow from this and you will hear why and how.  We also get into building mental toughness, being “present” with our families and taking our health seriously.  Again, something totally different than what I have put out on the podcast before and I learned a lot from Chad over the years and he is a successful businessman and great friend.  I appreciate Chad for coming on and having this conversation with me. Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Corner Crossing

Public Land

This week on The Average Conservationist Podcast, Marcus breaks down the recent ruling in the Corner Crossing case in Wyoming. In short, the Corner Crossing case was a lawsuit filed against 4 hunters in Wyoming who accessed a piece of public land from another by using a ladder to cross at an intersection of 2 pieces of private land. Two separate suits were filed against the hunters, both criminal and civil, claiming that the hunters trespassed on private land by crossing the air space on the private land. In both cases, the judge ruled in favor of the hunters and has potentially set a precedent for not only Wyoming but other western states as well. Time will tell what this means for other states, but for now it was a victory for hunters.

Mitch and Chris discuss how maximizing your physical health has many benefits in the field during the fall season.

Men are extremely guilty of being a "know-it-all" or DIY for just about anything.  The reality is with anything in life, we all have strengths and weaknesses.  If you're a plumber, you may be able to turn a wrench but it may not make you a mechanic.  In Mitch's case, he may have played sports and followed programs in the past, but that doesn't make him an expert in physical fitness.  Getting help from a professional like Chris can help anyone reach their physical fitness goals.  Mitch and Chris discuss workouts, off season and in season health, eating habits and wild game, and catering a plan that fits with your goals and lifestyle.  Be sure to check Chris's podcast the Wild Nutrition Podcast wherever you get your podcasts!

Whitetail

It’s almost summer! It’s hot, the woods are thick, and the water is calling your name. But for the die-hard whitetail hunter, the work never stops. It’s time to get boots on the ground for some summer scouting! While fighting ticks, thick vegetation and a three-digit heat index may not sound like a lot of fun, summer scouting can set you up for success this fall, especially if you’re covering unfamiliar ground.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Warbritton from The Hunting Public about how he approaches summer scouting. Aaron and the rest of the THP crew literally make a living by taking big bucks in limited time on highly pressured public land. And as you’ll learn from this episode, a lot of their success can be attributed to scouting, specifically, summer scouting. Aaron doesn’t put as much stock into some of the typical summer scouting tactics like glassing ag fields. Instead, he prefers to jump right into the thick of it and try to find where the bucks are bedding, or will be bedding come hunting season. Tune in to hear how Aaron uses summer scouting to put him and the rest of the THP crew on big bucks in the fall.

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast we take a different look at getting ready for hunting out west.  People always talk about what gear to buy, map preparation and study, etc. but one thing that gets lost in the shuffle of getting yourself ready to go out west is the physical aspect of the trip.  Western hunting requires a different physical type of exertion and effort, so to help us tackle that topic, Nate and Micah get to talk with Kevin Guillen with Wilderness Athlete about just that.  Kevin gets into some things to do to prepare for your western trips, some of their supplements someone can use during that process, and ways to stay ready to go once you are on the mountain.  We even talk about some things that don't always have to be healthy in your pack.  One thing is for certain, if you were lucky enough to get a tag to hunt out west for the first time, now is the time to start getting your body right and ready.  Good luck!

Jon suggests working the entire landscape to optimize interest and taking soil samples in areas that are managed for deer. Mark explains the importance of perennial food plots in his routine. Mark and Jon discuss oats and their importance in food plot regimes.

This week the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is covering one of its most requested topics, Oklahoma public land whitetails. Joining John for this episode is Levi Mayfield, a motivated public land hunter who has cut his teeth in the woods of southeastern Oklahoma. Levi has designed his life around being in the outdoors, whether it's behind a camera or a bow. It is this time in the outdoors that has shaped him into the hunter he is today, and on this episode, he invites the listeners into the passenger seat and along for the ride.

John and Levi start from the 10,000 foot view of finding an area to start with, and eventually work their way down to picking the specific tree. Levi talks about how terrain plays a major role in his setups, and how sign like rubs and scrapes don't play into his setups as much as it does for most people. The guys discuss saddle hunting and being mobile, and the ways Levi approaches hunting public compared to private. He talks about how he’s been #messinwithsquatchbot (if you haven’t yet, be sure to check out our very own AI built to help you get the most from our platform). We talk a little bit about our turkey season and Chris mentions he does some traditional flintlock hunting. Several of us are currently reading “The Frontiersman” by Allen W. Eckert, and we compare how tough traditional hunters were and how soft the modern hunter has become. We also get into a few tidbits of classic American history, including a bunch about Daniel Boone and local Kentuckiana lore.

While we’re on the subject of American history, we talked to Chris about hunting dogs. The settlers used dogs for everything from hunting big game to defending against attackers, but these hounds were a little different than the ones we see today. Chris also mentioned how some of the hound breeds were introduced to North America and developed over the decades.

Kicking this episode off, Duane discusses where the study is currently at and where it is heading.  This study originated 10 years ago and has a few more until they are finished with it.  It was interesting to hear Duane share how it has evolved over the years with technology that has helped them a ton with their findings and understandings.  Duane answers listener questions and elaborates on some myths whitetail hunters either swear by or not. Duane dives into some of the major factors that cause deer movement and the burning question of where deer go when the pressure rises. Turkey

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we start off very uncensored and share some of our silly nicknames … find out how Arica got herself some extra unwanted attention on a forum years ago. She went turkey hunting after spotting a few birds on her property. She slipped in and did some calling but the tom was henned up and wouldn’t break away … or so she thought. He came back on his own a little later on and she put the stalk on him but he got away from her again. She leaned on her calling and got him talking and then she set the call down. He gobbled a bunch but never came back in. She got one more chance and got close but may have spooked him.

Brayden and Phil have continued to get after it exploring a ton of ground but are having trouble getting a bird to commit. They’ve been finding birds but encountering some challenging scenarios. Dan Johnson is back on and gives some great advice for how/when you can get more aggressive when getting under roosted turkeys. We talk about some other late season tactics as the hunting gets tougher.

Jacob got out and got aggressive too but it backfired on him. He accidentally set up too close to roosted birds and had to make a move to spin around but got busted by two toms. He moved into another spot but this time ran into a deer and a turkey that scattered away hard. It was a tough way to end his season, but now he’s confident next year will be better because he knows where the birds are hanging out. We also tease out some ideas of how you might be able to work a bird that was scared away.

Arica found a deer fawn in her yard. This is pretty early so the team ponders the whole sequence of the rut and poses some thought provoking questions. How can trail cams help predict peak rut?

We close the show with some random silliness. What is Derby pie? We all share our favorite pie and ice cream flavors. We also banter about the relationship between pooping and coffee.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by a couple of BBQ pitmasters, Cowboy Kev and Mikey K.  Both of these guys live for the live fire pit and the low and slow lifestyle.  You can find these guys at the pit or on their own podcast, BBQ Chat.  Nick tries to take advantage of their expertise by having them give him some pointers when cooking large cuts of pork.  If you plan on putting something on the pit this weekend, Mikey and Kev will have you thinking about your process.  WIth the memorial holiday coming fast we need to get ourselves in the spirit of low and slow, on this episode of Huntavore.

Cowboy Kev hails from Connecticut and runs Wilee BBQ while Mikey is based out of the Chicagoland area and heads up Man Meat BBQ, yet is poised to head south sometime soon.  These two share a passion for barbecue.  These two take on challenges that normal home cooks don’t take on, cooking for huge crowds and serving amazing bbq.  These guys gave me some great pointers when cooking up pork butts and picnics.  First, that butts trump picnics because of their meat content and shreadability.  Picnics have more bone and do not shread as easily. Which makes them good candidates for chopped pork instead of shredded. Second, don’t forget to season after the shredding or chop because the outside got all the seasoning, 85% of the internal pork won’t be seasoned. Mikey Kay says for a special punch, add all the juices back in after the shred or chop. cowboy Kev does his whole hogs upside down with a skin facing the heat. Skin does a great job of keeping things in or out, essentially creating a bathtub for flavor all the juices render and can’t run off the meat.  You can find these guys, and their show @bbqchat on Instagram.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 174 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and the 2022 Bowhunting League PA Big Buck winner Taylor Fleischer.  In this specific episode Taylor shares some of the little things that have helped him be successful the last few years, but specifically last year on the buck he was after for the last 3 years. Taylor shares the little things that can be overlooked by hunters and how to improve on what you’re already doing.

Kicking this episode off we dive into Taylors hunting roots from when he was a young teenager.  This was a great kickoff discussion because at a  young age Taylor got the bowhunting bug and from there has worked endlessly to continue his pursuit to perfection.  This aspect I believe most hunters want to accomplish and achieve but know the process is a long fun and frustrating journey.  We discussed how some hunting experiences shaped who he is as a hunter now. The lessons learned from his past season Pope & Young buck that he plans to build upon.  Then we get into the nitty-gritty of the little things that have helped Taylor the last few seasons.  From his organization of trail cam photos, reading/understanding deer movement and behavior. We wrap up our discussion talking about how he manages his property in central PA and the challenges he faces with hunting it and hunting where he currently resides.

Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Jake's adaptive management style and his ability to be consistent and grow more tonnage per acre, allows him to pull in more deer and be less susceptible to over browse.

Jake discusses his current food plot regime, and breaks down why this is the better late season food plot option when trying to manage a larger deer herd. Jake details his property layout and how deer congregate on his property when he creates “green plots” and how his food plots will outcompete other options like soybeans. Jake discusses a combination of soybeans and corn and what ratio he plants each in to get maximum results. Jake provides an option for annual plants and other options you have for late season food.

Jake explains his neighborhood situation and what his neighbors are doing from a harvest to food perspective and how this impacts his property. Jake discusses the importance of his observation treestand  and how you can observe much more through your own eyes as compared to trail cameras.  Jake explains how trail systems he lays out will lead deer through his property for better hunting opportunities. Jon discusses the importance of observation data and why we should not ignore this information when evaluating deer movement. Jake explains his observation data and how bucks use cover and how deer move based on densities and wind direction.  Jake explains how deer can avoid trail cameras and sometimes our reliance on trail cameras can be fraught with lack of or misinformation. Jon and Jake discuss how deer are individualistic and how data from trail cameras and observation lead to more information on deer behavior. Jon explains a strategy to pull a mature buck onto your property and the bits of information he relies on to ensure deer are going have increased interest in a property.

Andrew lives and hunts in Ohio, but has also hunted deep traditional northern states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. Another advantage Andrew brings to the conversation is that he was just down at John's place in Oklahoma hunting hogs about 2 months ago, so he is familiar with how hunting goes in the south as well.

The guys cover seval topics including land parcel size, season structures, hot and cold weather effects, and even talk about different hunting strategies like deer drives. In 2022 Andrew killed a nice buck hunting two different parcels of land that totalled only 8 acres! He also talks about how Ohio does not have a modern rifle season. If you want to gun hunt, you can choose between a shotgun, muzzleloader, or straight wall cartridge such as the 350 legend. Overall, it is a great conversation about how different regulations work and affect different states and varying population densities of both humans and wildlife. In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re continuing our talks about turkey hunting. This time, Dan, Chris, and Jacob got out on a public piece. They heard some gobbles and had a nice setup but ran into some issues with other hunters. They finished the day with some scouting and got a great lead for where to set up next time. We talk about etiquette when hunting turkeys on public land and how to handle other groups in the woods. Sometimes it’s better to have a chat and work together. How do you adapt and adjust when Plan A falls apart? We swap a few stories of the good, bag, and ugly on this troublesome topic. We also discuss some of the key differences between hunting public and private land.

Brayden got out again and hunted an area he’s seen turkeys with lots of good sign. They were getting into their setup and then he realized he forgot one major item at home! They changed plans and managed to bring in a bird in the end, but didn’t punch the tag. They set up under a widowmaker and had a lively chance encounter with a woodpecker. How effective is scratching and scraping for bringing in turkeys?

Derek mentions a hot tip for where to find turkeys late-morning/mid-day after other hunters have been pushing them around. He got out and heard a lot of birds talking in the trees. It’s a tough spot to get in and set up but he made it work. He got a group to come in, they made a ton of noise but ended up getting hung up. He talks through the decision-making process and how to handle a multi-bird situation. He’s still struggling with something from that hunt … is it better to move slowly and quietly when a bird is close or move so quick it won’t have time to understand what’s happening? He also gives a good bit of advice for how to end a hunt on a high note, even when it doesn’t finish with a flop.

We start the episode off by diving into John's 2022-23 hunting season and the 2 dandy bucks he harvested this season.  From here the conversation transitions to how and why he chooses his access and stand locations.  John hunts his family ranch which is an operating cattle farm.  While the ranch is 1000+ acres, around 90% is grassland and pasture, leaving John with "huntable" ground comparable in size to what many may see in PA.  John also uses feeders in his strategy (legal in OK).  While many think this is "cheating," Mitch and John both attest to the difficulties of mature bucks daylighting at these locations.  The guys dive into how using this valuable tool can orient better stand placement, promote daylight movement, and allow opportunity for the best bucks in the neighborhood.  They also discuss the value of elevated tower blinds on private land, especially when hunting near food sources.
