Hunting Leases with U.S. Hunts

Big Game
Whitetail
Turkey

This week's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast covers a topic John has been wanting to talk about for quite some time. Greg Willis runs US Hunts, a website that helps hunters find leases for deer, waterfowl, varmints, bears, and more. Greg has been helping connect hunters with land owners for many years now, but has recently upped his game and his outreach. US hunts is a simple to use website, which can filter what a person is looking for, much like any other online shopping.

Greg and John obviously talk about Gregs business, but they also cover many topics that are good for anyone looking to lease land should know. Obviously everyone wants to kill giant deer, but there are other things to consider as well like neighbors, water, food, accessibility for both hunting and other recreational uses, and don't forget about the land owner themself. The guys also talk about the advantages to leasing over owning. Such as being able to hunt multiple areas, or being able to simply pick up and go if something were to happen to the quality of the game a person is pursuing.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with his wife, professional counselor Tiffany Raley, about how spouses can spend more time hunting and less time arguing about it.

Whitetail

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Josh Isely about his adventures hunting what most would consider once in a lifetime animals.

Josh is a regular 8-5 engineer with a grown son. He grew up in a small town in southern Wisconsin, worked on his grandparents farm and in his mother's bar. He was an athlete but always loved to be in the woods and on the water. He grew up admiring the mule deer and antelope on the wall in his grandfather’s basement and knew that he wanted to expand his hunting one day. He took his first trip to WY in 2009 which sparked a love for new hunting adventures and helped him make lifestyle changes that would allow him to travel the world in pursuit of big game. On this episode Dan and Josh discuss the ins and outs of expedition hunting and what it takes to break outside the “norm” of hunting your home state.

The Huntavore

Carnitas on a Tailgate & Surprise Freezer Defrost

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, we join Nick after a series of events, both awesome and not so awesome.  First, he was humbled by an article entitled Roast What You Kill, and is reflecting on his thoughts.  Second, in preparation for a bachelor party, Nick prepared Carnitas, and Venison Barbacoa to be slung out as blackstone tacos on a tailgate.  Finally, Nick was again humbled by a wall of water and ice coming from his freezer.  All sorts of ups and downs on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is solo on this episode, and reflects on an article by Greg Morse.  Expanding on the Proverbs 12:27, Nick is noticing areas where he has gotten worn down and lazy.  In the examples it doesn't just point to hunters not roasting their game, but points to areas where we as men have lost motivation and slacked.  The Beautiful thing is we can alway get back up, and get better.

Link: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/roast-what-you-kill

Next is what we were waiting for, and that is the Carnitas and Venison barbacoa on a tailgate.  Nick turned out almost 60 of these tasty birra tacos using the cooking liquid from the barbacoa.  Simple add ons like cheese, onion, cilantro, and a chipotle drizzle sauce make these babies a home run.

Last is a reminder to us all who eat out of the freezer.  Ajar doors are an ever present danger.  Be vigilant and have fail safes for these meat safes.  Nick talks about his quick plan to move the still frozen solid bounty, but also discard the thawed door items.  He also lays out the plan to be proactive about protecting that door.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 178 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Mike Lindahl from Domain Outdoor.  Mike was on the podcast two springs ago talking about how to improve your land and his company Domain Outdoor.  However, this episode Mike and I had an enjoyable conversation where we were able to just catch up! Last time we saw each other was at the 2022 ATA show and throughout the year we always keep tabs on what each other is up to.  So, we decided to catch up over a podcast for you all to enjoy!

Kicking this episode off, Mike lets us know what is happening with work and how much Domain is growing.  One aspect that really caught my attention in this discussion is how individuals over the last few years have turned their land habitat management into a year round process.  This is obviously great for Mike and Domain, but I love to hear how much he and his crew are still able to help individuals out with creating the best property they can.  From here I know Mike is a big golfer so we quickly share some golf stories and then discuss his best season to date!  Mike killed his biggest whitetail this past season with some great friends in Kentucky and a great buck in Wisconsin with his family.  Hearing the traditions he has with his friends and family in Wisconsin reminds me of what a lot of us hunters have here in PA.  Mike also shares his excitement for the Alaska caribou hunt that is on the horizon for this upcoming season! I really enjoyed this episode and having the opportunity to catch up with Mike! . Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

When turkey season comes to a close, many outdoorsmen and women hang the camo in the closet and prepare for the long summer off season. Bransen Shelton had other plans this year though. He and a few buddies loaded up the truck and headed west for a spring bear hunt. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Bransen joins John to talk about the insane amount of time and work it took to bring down a DIY public land bear.

Bransen had hunted the western mountains before, but never for spring bear. He talks about the intense grind the hunt required in order to be successful. Long days and lots of miles. Some days waking up before 4:30am and not going to bed till well after 11pm. He goes through some of the gear he used on the trip and how he was able to stay in the back country for so long. He also gets into the different hunting styles the group used throughout the week, and how he specifically went against some of the usual tactics a lot of people use.

UNCENSORED by GoWild

Bearded Hens, Bourbon Drawls, & Camping with Kids

Big Game
Turkey
Bowhunting

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we start off with some silliness and ask where our regional accents and drawls come from. How much does alcohol influence their appearances? What happens to your accent when you’re born and raised somewhere and then visit or move to another area … do you fake it or have you made it? How does age affect how it happens?

Derek went up to central Ohio to turkey hunt with our good buddy Paul Campbell of the O2 Podcast and How to Hunt Turkey Podcast. They hunted both private and public land, saw some birds, hunted a few different ways, and got real close to some toms … find out how they did. They follow two key tactics for killing birds: with your feet or with your seat. They also remind us that even if you’re calling and not hearing birds respond, they are still hearing you. How does vegetation affect hunting as the season progresses?

We also discuss how public land parcels are neglected and trashed by people. This may not be hunters or anglers doing it and it’s not the fault of the state wildlife agency; so who is creating these messes and what can we do about it?

Arica took her kids pond fishing and they got into some panfish. They’re planning a trip up to Michigan and are hoping to target pike, bass, and more. School gets out soon and they’ll be camping hard until the end of summer. Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire raises a great question about kids’ age and camping: how young is too young to take a big trip to somewhere like Yellowstone? At a young age, are they able to get around and will they even remember it? Can you train and condition kids to prepare for a big trip and long hikes?

Dan and Derek talk about the tags they’ve drawn already, are planning to draw, and hint at some of their fall hunting plans.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Welcome to the Limbhanger podcast! Turkey season is over and we don't want to talk about it. But this is a podcast, so we have to talk about it. The redeeming news is that Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project is joining us this week. It's hard to give Dave an introduction. Do you talk about his unmatched skillset of being a hunter? Or should you talk about his championship calling? He's really just one of the most genuine, down to earth people in the hunting industry, and it's an honor to have him joining us.

We're getting in the weeds this week as Dave gives us some insight into the things he's taken note of in his career as a travelling turkey hunter. Each spring, Dave travels across the country hunting turkeys. So who better to talk to about turkey populations, regulations that might need adjusted, or new regulations that might actually be working well? It seems to be commonplace for hunters to talk about a rise in pressure. Covid seemingly opened the flood gates and some people believe the spring turkey woods will never be the same due to increased pressure. What does Dave think about this? Well, rest assured you're going to hear this and a lot more this week. Thanks for listening!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 177 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native Tyler Wilbur.  Tyler and I had a fun conversation about a variety of whitetail topics.  These topics included his success this past year, how that will help him for this upcoming season, learning from Steve Sherk and how his scouting is evolving.  We cover some more topics that I believe will fire you up for this whitetail season! The main topic of this episode is don’t leave anything to chance.  Get out there and scout, prepare by shooting your bow, go over past intel and be ready for when that moment comes!

Kicking this episode off, Tyler introduces himself and what is currently in the works for him.  It was great to get a chance to hear Tyler’s story from learning from his father and now getting a chance to learn from Steve Sherk to hunt the big mountain bucks here in PA.  We get into what specifically Tyler is looking for when scouting and hunting.  We get into the importance of looking into the smaller details to set yourself up for success.  This past season was also a rollercoaster type season for Tyler in that he was after a real good mature buck and had his chance but ultimately missed his opportunity.  We chatted about how he didn’t let this back luck shot tear him down and instead come back from that and kill another great buck.  We get into a heck of a lot more in this episode and hope you enjoy this one!  I appreciate Tyler for coming on and having this conversation with me. Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Gaining Hunting Permission on New Ground w John Roach

Big Game

Bowhunting

Public Land

Let's face it, we all need to find access to more hunting land. Your grandma's back 40 could be sold by a family member that doesn't share your passion. One year, your cherished lease might not hold the deer or turkeys you're after. The geese may totally avoid that crop field you've had permission on for years and spend their mornings on the neighbor's field. That public piece you've put so many years into scouting could be gone overnight, sold off or leased up by private parties. Permission on new ground is the only way to guard against these risks. But for many, finding new hunting ground is intimidating.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with John Roach about how John gains hunting permission on new ground. John collects hunting permission like kids used to collect baseball cards. He works hard to find the right places, maintain landowner relationships, and ultimately secure hunting rights on tons of ground with plenty of other permission-asking competition. In this episode, John and Josh discuss how they go about choosing properties to ask permission on, what makes a property stand out, and how they go about gaining permission even when others have been turned away.

Eric discusses managing water in an easy to do manner that will amplify interests. Eric discusses the soil and the related plants that create preferences of ducks and deer.

Eric provides a layout and explanation of engineering of wetland areas for waterfowl. Eric details the benefit of duck ponds and explanation of what he prefers and how a small amount of water can go a long way. Jon and Eric discuss nesting areas and ideal cover for waterfowl and deer habitat. Eric suggests using artificial intelligence apps to evaluate plant life and consider the benefit of the respective plants to the animal that the landowner is trying to promote. Eric discusses managing existing vegetation (i.e. dogwoods) and how to promote those on the landscape.

Eric and Jon discuss hemorrhagic disease and suggest how to reduce these concerns on your property. Eric provides real life examples of how to think on a larger scale on disease and how to widen the habitat preferences to reduce populations around water resources. Eric explains why he does not use waterholes and why they may be unnecessary on your property. Jon explains the nutrient profile of plants and the difference in utilization in aquatic areas. Jon provides an aquatic plant that will provide excellent resources to deer on the landscape. Eric discusses the differences on why certain plants are eaten and a geospatial study on why deer may use certain areas over others.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we wrapped up our turkey hunting season. Arica got out again. She did some yelping, scouted around, had some hens come in, and heard a few gobbles. She tried to work the hens wondering if they would get the gobblers to follow. How do deer and turkey use different senses? How important is a locator call for finding longbeards? Why do turkeys shock gobble?

Brayden and Phil got back out on their private piece. They had some birds on camera and gave it one final shot. They fooled with some hens but didn’t find any toms. They also went back to the public property they’ve been hunting and tried to strike something up. They got some gobbles and put the stalk on. Have you ever heard a turkey double gobble? They got set up and had one come in full strut but had an unfortunate mishap … find out what happened!

The guys are planning a walleye fishing trip to Lake Erie along with attending the Walleye Festival. We swap some tips for catching walleye. Catching them takes a little bit of finesse, some technical knowledge, and of course, a little luck and experience. We also talk about the weighted walleye cheaters. Do you think their consequences were enough for their actions?

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John discusses the discovery of the first CWD positive whitetail in Oklahoma. It did not come as much of a surprise to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, as every state surrounding Oklahoma has had a positive Chronic Wasting Disease case in recent years. So what happens now?

This episode is not a scientific evaluation of CWD and its future effects of the Oklahoma deer herd. Instead, this episode is simply meant to inform listeners about what has happened in the past, what is happening in the present, and to prepare Oklahoma sportsmen and women for the future. It's not time to hit the panic button just yet! John discusses the history of CWD in Oklahoma, the recent case that has been confirmed, and a few precautions the wildlife department is putting into place. There will definitely be another episode in the near future with someone who is far more informed than John, but he felt that this news was important enough to be addressed immediately.

David Rabe is no stranger to the spice game.  David first launched Wilde Seasonings a few years back.  David sought out some partners to grow his brand and get high quality seasonings to home cooks and hunters who want only the best for what they are preparing.  Jiving with the term Kairos; the right critical moment, opportune timing.  Dave has relaunched his original blends along with others to try and cover as many proteins as possible.  Dave is also an accomplished hunter who strategizes the points game in the west.  On the spectrum of meat hunter to horn hunter, Dave is on the far edge of looking for mature animals in highly sought after units.  Which is part of the reason why Dave has spent so much time on these seasonings.  Not every season will bring back a trophy animal, so when he does, it gets the absolute best treatment possible.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Josh Plummer and Devon McDonald about their passion for the outdoors and the reasons that they can’t stay out of the woods.

Josh Plummer grew up in the cornfields of Indiana as an avid outdoorsman. After high school, he attended Purdue University before joining the Marine Corps. He retired in 2019 after seven deployments and currently lives in North Carolina where he is finishing law school at Wake Forest.

Now, he spends every chance he gets hunting and camping with his wife and family. In addition to hunting, Josh is passionate about Veterans Advocacy and the role that hunting plays in helping veterans heal and connect with each other. To help spread that message, Josh and Devon recently started Reasons Hunting to share their passion and talk about the many reasons why we hunt.

Devon McDonald grew up hunting the fence rows and woods of central Indiana. After high school he graduated from Indiana University before joining the US Army. After the Army, Devon attended law school and earned his law degree in 2012.

Devon still lives in Indiana where he spends every minute he can in the outdoors camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting. He is also passionate about Veteran Advocacy, especially veteran suicide prevention and how the outdoors can help veterans overcome adversity. Devon co-founded Reasons Hunting along with Josh to help spread the message of how hunting has helped them as well as to share all the fun that hunting and outdoors have to offer.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 176 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Chad Sylvester of Exodus Outdoor Gear.  This was a great conversation with Chad and one that I haven’t had on the podcast before.  This isn’t like the last time Chad was on where we dove deep into whitetail strategy.  This time around we dive deep into life and how we can be better individuals.

Kicking this episode off, Chad talks about his upbringing and the life experiences he went through by working on his family farm at a young age.  We went from this experience, spending time with his grandfather a lot, who helped mold Chad for who he is today.  I think a lot of us will share similar stories like Chad.  Then we get into the older years when Chad was going through his college recruitment for football and playing at the next level.  This opportunity was unique for Chad because he was able to learn and grow from this and you will hear why and how.  We also get into building mental toughness, being “present” with our families and taking our health seriously.  Again, something totally different than what I have put out on the podcast before and I learned a lot from Chad over the years and he is a successful businessman and great friend.  I appreciate Chad for coming on and having this conversation with me. Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

This week on The Average Conservationist Podcast, Marcus breaks down the recent ruling in the Corner Crossing case in Wyoming. In short, the Corner Crossing case was a lawsuit filed against 4 hunters in Wyoming who accessed a piece of public land from another by using a ladder to cross at an intersection of 2 pieces of private land. Two separate suits were filed against the hunters, both criminal and civil, claiming that the hunters trespassed on private land by crossing the air space on the private land. In both cases, the judge ruled in favor of the hunters and has potentially set a precedent for not only Wyoming but other western states as well. Time will tell what this means for other states, but for now it was a victory for hunters.

It’s almost summer! It’s hot, the woods are thick, and the water is calling your name. But for the die-hard whitetail hunter, the work never stops. It’s time to get boots on the ground for some summer scouting! While fighting ticks, thick vegetation and a three-digit heat index may not sound like a lot of fun, summer scouting can set you up for success this fall, especially if you’re covering unfamiliar ground.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Warbritton from The Hunting Public about how he approaches summer scouting. Aaron and the rest of the THP crew literally make a living by taking big bucks in limited time on highly pressured public land. And as you’ll learn from this episode, a lot of their success can be attributed to scouting, specifically, summer scouting. Aaron doesn’t put as much stock into some of the typical summer scouting tactics like glassing ag fields. Instead, he prefers to jump right into the thick of it and try to find where the bucks are bedding, or will be bedding come hunting season. Tune in to hear how Aaron uses summer scouting to put him and the rest of the THP crew on big bucks in the fall.

We talk a little bit about our turkey season and Chris mentions he does some traditional flintlock hunting. Several of us are currently reading “The Frontiersman” by Allen W. We also get into a few tidbits of classic American history, including a bunch about Daniel Boone and local Kentuckiana lore.

While we’re on the subject of American history, we talked to Chris about hunting dogs. The settlers used dogs for everything from hunting big game to defending against attackers, but these hounds were a little different than the ones we see today. Chris also mentioned how some of the hound breeds were introduced to North America and developed over the decades.

On this BS Session episode, Dan catches up with Parker McDonald about his turkey season and upcoming fall hunts. The guys kick off the episode by discussing whether or not Texas is part of "The South" or do they just stand alone. Parker then talks about his success across multiple states hunting different species of wild turkey. Dan asks him if he found any good deer hunting spots while chasing turkeys. Just a great conversation between two outdoorsmen about hunting gobblers and big bucks. Enjoy and share!

Great conversation about their materials, who their demographic is, and why they feel they have some of the best gear in the industry.

2023 PA Spring Gobbler Finale - Lessons Learned

Big Game

Turkey
Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we welcome back Jason Miller from JMiller Custom Calls.  Jason and Mitch swap stories recapping their season.  If you've kept up with the recent turkey hunting episodes on the show, you know Mitch's season ended almost as quickly as it started, killing two birds in three hunts.  Jason's PA season began on the slow side, but rapidly caught up during the mid season when he punched both his tags in one week.  Jason is an experienced hunter punching a PA spring gobbler tag every year since 1994.  Learning experiences are within the hunting story and there is plenty to take away and use for yourself from this conversation.  Both Mitch and Jason made some mistakes this season, but ultimately the adjustments Jason made led him to some big gobblers!  Each bird they harvested this season was called in with Jason's custom mouth calls.  Be sure to check out JMiller Custom Calls at the links below, they are killer!

The guys had a heck of a time on this episode just reliving the hunt. This was the type of trip that absolutely felt like it fell into place about as perfect as you could ever ask for. We hope you have a great time reliving it with us.
