String Jumping and Arrow speed, Ranch Fairy and Darrel Barnette

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Gear

On today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett sits down with Troy Fowler (aka the Ranch Fairy) and Darrel Barnette, who some of you may have also seen on either the Ranch Fairy channel or watching the Hunting Public. Garrett put together a string jump timeframe dataset corresponding to arrow speed and time of flight for discussion. The data was derived entirely on video footage Garrett had from deer shot at inside of 30 yards, but mostly inside of 20. Much of the string jumping debate seems to revolve around longer shots and whether or not speed is irrelevant compared to how fast deer can react. But rarely do you hear people talk about the relationship for close range shots. The group discusses that topic and also some of the longer range unknowns. There's not really any agenda pushing in this episode. It's just open dialogue discussing a data set, how it might apply to your own decision making, what limitations are there, and what type of additional questions we still have and data we'd like to collect and analyze to continue to learn.

Does Your Hunting Property Need a Tune-Up?

Deer season is winding down for many if not most, and it's time to sit back and reflect on our season. Did you get the buck you were after? Did you see the deer numbers you thought you should be seeing? Did the deer use your property in predictable ways? Were you able to access your hunting locations without bumping deer? All of these questions may reveal that our season could have been better from a deer hunting perspective. So what if you're unhappy with how your season went? If that's you, it just might be time for a hunting property tune-up.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about evaluating your hunting property and when it might be time to call in a consultant. Sam has year of experience with on-site whitetail hunting property consultation and provides top-tier habitat and hunting plans to his clients. Over the years, Sam has learned what works to attract and hold deer, and to influence their movement across your hunting property. Whether you just bought a new property, lease ground that you can manipulate, or have hunted the same 40 acres for decades, Sam can help take your deer hunting to the next level. Tune in to hear how Sam evaluates his hunting season, how he scouts his property once the season is over, and how he designs hunting properties to provide excellent hunting for his clients.

This week the guys sit down to talk about the real life wild west show that Paul and Andrew participated in the past weekend.  As you all know, Paul loves the birds.  Turkey, waterfowl, doves, you name it, he loves hunting them.  Paul’s self admitted lack of white tail deer interest is alarming to Andrew, but comes with a few years of drought.  Well folks, that drought is over.  And when it rains, it pours.

Paul gives a play by play of what turned out to be a very productive morning at Killbuck Marsh on a controlled hunt.  Paul’s morning turned more into target practice than hunting, but the freezer has been filled!  The morning started with some frustrations, but as soon as the sun was up, those frustrations faded away, and quickly.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 151 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Brandon Miller of The Everyday Outdoorsmen.  Brandon is a great individual and we love to have him on the podcast.  Make sure to check out his previous episodes with us from last year.  This episode we dive into late season topics.  Start out with catching up on life, then talk about his strategy when it comes to the late season.  Brandon will hunt late season here in PA as well as in Maryland. To go along with the tactic side of late season hunting, we discussed a few must-have pieces of gear when heading out during this time as well.  We wrap everything up with plans for hunting the last weekend of rifle in PA up in the big woods and keeping that positive mindset to just enjoy being in the outdoors.

Be sure to check Brandon and the crew of The Everyday Outdoorsmen out on YouTube! They put out great videos, really relatable guys and fun to watch do their thing in the woods.  For myself I ended up getting sick towards the end of the week and I was able to get out on Saturday and was able to fill a doe tag here in PA! Finally! With the season beginning to wrap up in PA and other states, let us know what kind of episodes you are interested in hearing and if you had success this past year hit us up and come on the show to share your story!

3 Year Quest For A Big Buck Falls Short

Public Land

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Josh Profitt about a 3 year search for a big public land buck. Josh talks about an unassuming piece of public land that had very low deer numbers and that held not one, but two, big antlered bucks. One of these bucks, given the name "Bones", caught the attention of Josh and one of his hunting buddies. At this point the game was on and the two of them started to scout, learn, and dissect the 500 acres this buck called home. There was a reason this buck felt comfortable on this piece of public, the cover was thick and almost impossible to access, so trail cameras played a huge role in learning this bucks annual pattern.

Over the three quest for "Bones", Josh had to overcome several obstacles like increased pressure when the word got out about this buck, even resulting in the loss of a couple friendships. This is an amazing episode that doesn't turn out the way you think it would.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Kenny Kane (Generations Forestry) discuss forest management strategies and land improvement. Kenny breaks down his hunting season and his success and failures. Kenny explains a trip out of state and his success on a big Colorado elk.

Kenny details the significance of a forest management plan and how to consider short and long term options. Kenny explains problems that persist on a client property and how to attack complications to ensure goals are met. Forest management techniques and changes allow for the opportunity to increase and improve habitat for deer and other wildlife. Kenny explains mistakes that landowners make that can be remedied and options to improve a woodlot. Jon and Kenny discuss how to break down a property into zones. Kenny describes prescriptions to support changes that will make a forest setting more productive for deer and deer hunting. Jon and Kenny discuss bad decisions regarding logging that hinder a property and how money sometimes impacts our decisions too much.

Kenny goes through the entire process of analyzing a woodlot. Kenny details each item he considers with a client property, to include what species to remove. Kenny breaks down the option to remove trees, and what are some of the best treatment options to remove trees and brush. Kenny discusses chemical options and methods of hack and squirt, stump cutting, and basal bark spray.  Kenny explains how to remove specific tree species, and how to evaluate the understory and what steps are needed each year to make sure the property improves. Jon and Kenny discuss ways to improve the number of oaks on the landscape and evaluate strategies that will get the landowner ahead to produce more acorns and seedlings. Kenny explains methods to measure light and ensure enough light reaches the forest floor for regeneration. Jon and Kenny discuss balancing goals when thinking through each improvement, forest regeneration and what tree species should be maintained across the landscape for deer.

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast Nate & Andy get to talk with fellow Missourian Jake Kaullen about a 200+ inch deer he was able to punch his tag with this year.  Jake would have never even known this deer existed if he hadn't have just went hunting one time last season.  With no previous trail cam pictures of him and no one knowing of him, this deer was basically a ghost on the farm he hunts.  This season was more of the same.  Jake couldn't get confirmation of his existence until he was able to get one passing by series of pics on a trail cam he had placed.  Then the hunt was on and the rest was history.  Congratulations to Jake on a once in a lifetime deer.  This story is proof that the saying is true....."just go hunting" because nothing is going to happen if you don't.  Enjoy the show!

With gun season over in Oklahoma and most states across the country, hopefully that means freezers are getting full. Now that you have all that beautiful red meat, it's time to think about what to do with it. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Sportsmens Empire brother Nick Otto, aka the Huntavore, to talk about all things venison and cooking. This is an episode you are going to want to take notes on!

Nick is an adult onset hunter, meaning he started hunting a little later in his life. While a lot of people learn to hunt first and then cook, Nick is quite the opposite. Nick got into hunting because of the food it provides, so it just makes sense that he cares so much about the great quality wild game can have if you take care of it. Nick and John discuss some basic venison prep, and Nick shares a few recipes you probably won't find in your grandma's old cook book.

The caught Brett off guard and left him with only one small property to hunt that he usually saved for his kids. Luckily, one of Brett's good friends came through in a major way and let him his family farm. Instantly, Brett hung a couple trail cameras to see what was moving around on the property, little did he know a giant was already living there. The rest, they say, is history. Excellent episode!

Should Pennsylvania Reintroduce the American Marten?

Public Land

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are going back to the biology classroom.  We have a conversation with the state’s furbearer biologist: Thomas Keller.  Tom is a down to earth family man who enjoys hunting and trapping as much as the next guy in line.  When he reached out to us to share information about this potential reintroduction, skepticism was fairly high.  Is it really worth bringing another predator into this state?  Listen with an open mind and decide for yourself!

We discuss the road leading Tom into this position with the game commission and his passion for wildlife.  Next we dive into the background of the American Marten.  When was the Marten eradicated from Pennsylvania?  What are it’s feeding habits?  What is the preferred habitat?  Is the American Marten a threat to game populations such as turkeys and ruffed grouse?  What benefits does the American Marten have for the ecosystem?  Tom addresses all this and much more in our conversation.  The fear of the unknown is typically what breeds negativity, but after listening to Tom, you’ll have less to fear as a hunter and game species appreciator!

If you follow the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast on Instagram, you may already know what this title is about. This emotion packed episode is about John's 2022 Colorado elk hunt, which started off with a bang when his truck was stolen from the hotel parking lot on the first night of his trip. John had been looking forward to this hunt with his buddy Nathan Jasper for a year and a half, but everything got flipped upside down when he stopped for a night in Denver and car thieves stole his truck and everything inside.

After a very expensive trip to Cabelas, John still went on and followed through with the hunt, but his troubles were far from over. An early snow storm dumped 8-10 inches of snow, making travel around the lodge near impossible. Trying to roll with the punches, John and Nate dropped to lower elevation to try and find the elk the snow had pushed down. All they found down low were hunters and land locked pieces of public that were blocked off by private landowners. This trip turned into a life lesson about trials and perseverance, and they are some life lessons that John will not soon forget.

Nick is joined by Simon Majumdar, food writer, podcaster, and Food Network personality.  Simon has been around the world, tasting food, understanding where it comes from, and how things are prepared.  In fact food is the language of his family.  “What have you been eating?”  instead of the usual “how are you?”  Growing up in the United Kingdom,  Simon had the experience of enjoying several types of deer; muntjac, roe, and red stag to name a few.  Given the system of how game is managed over there, you can purchase some from your butcher or market.  Here in the US, it is a different story.  Simon shows a real appreciation for hunting and fishing, because it is an effective tool for managing the landscape, and a more personally important reason, the wonderful wild meat.

A large takeaway that Nick got from this discussion with Simon is that the US is quite narrow in the way venison is prepared versus how it is prepared in the UK and in Europe.  Steaks, Straps, and burger reign supreme in what comes out of processors today.  Simon is encouraged that North American hunters are beginning to venture out past the normal smoked backstrap and trying new dishes.  Tradition is important, and old dishes need to be made, but can we make room for new traditions to be made?

Tristian explains his opinions about the lack of quality bucks in northern New York that he feels is directly correlated to the length of their rifle deer season. He talks about antler point restrictions, moving the gun season out of the rut, and reducing the number of buck tags allocated to residents. This is an excellent episode that hunters from several states can relate to. What are your thoughts on the state that you live in?

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett breaks down his archery hunt success out of state. This hunt was during a firearms season as well. That pressure did play a role in strategy, but so did timing in proximity to the peak breeding timeframe of the rut. Garrett describes the thought process and strategy going in, how that changed over the first several hours in the woods, what type of sign he found to trigger setting up in a tree right away, and the play-by-play of the hunt. In addition, some of the details related to the frontal shot were broken down in this episode.

For some of us Alabama folks, it's the rut and we're tired. Sometimes it's fun to get your mind off tactics for a week and just have a fun convo, and that's exactly what this is.

Some great stuff!  Aaron is from PA and had a killer of a year for 2022.  The man just GETS IT DONE!  Hit up CO for his first elk hunt this past year and tagged out on day 1!  Although PA it took him a few days, he still managed to get it done on a great mountain buck.  Aaron does a ton of scouting and running trail cameras, writing content for various hunting outlets, so I wanted to have Aaron on to talk about when the season is all said and done…what is on that to-do list and kind of a now what?  We break down things like checking your gear to ensure you are all good or need to replace items, getting trail cam data, boots on the ground and a ton more!  Thanks again everyone for the support and tuning in! With archery season beginning to wrap up in PA and other states, let us know what kind of episodes you are interested in hearing and if you had success this past year hit us up and come on the show to share your story!

As November comes to an end and rifle season fades away, many people consider the season done for. That very fact is one reason you should not give up yet! As John is off in Colorado chasing elk, he wants to make sure that you are not down in the dumps just yet. There is still over a month of deer season left and it can be some of the best hunting of the entire year. This may be a shorter episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, but it is a very important one.

John absolutely loves late season whitetail hunting. In fact, 5 of his last 7 Oklahoma bucks have come after December 22! This episode is meant to both educate and encourage folks to not give up. Late season can be one of the easiest and best times to pattern a mature buck. As hunting pressure goes down and bucks become slaves to their stomachs, punching your tag can be as predictable as a late season cold front.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are discussing current events happening in our neighboring state; New Jersey.  On November 15th, the state voted unanimously to reinstate a bear season from December 5-10th.  There has not been a bear hunt since 2020.  During that time frame, there has been an explosion in the bear population and a substantial increase in bear-human conflicts.  Joining us on the show this week is diehard bear hunter, Jay Lyon.

Jay grew up hunting in his home state of New Jersey and has found his greatest passion in black bears.  He is no stranger to hunting bears in the northeast as he has taken numerous bears in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and surrounding states.  After our introduction we dive right into the exciting opportunity unfolding in less than two weeks.  In addition, we address the concern of the anti-hunting agenda in the state of New Jersey and how that continues to spread.  Even if you do not plan to participate in this hunt, be a supporter of this conservation effort and a voice against the anti hunting community.  Don't assume this can't happen in your neighborhood!

The Orange Army has been in full force across the country! While the arrival of gun deer seasons is a welcomed event for deer hunters, the onset of gun hunting creates a major shift in the habits of local deer herds. The massive influx of hunters and the steady BOOM of firearms have deer more on edge than at any point of the hunting season so far. All this pressure has a significant impact on where deer, especially mature bucks, like to spend their time during daylight. They become much more reclusive, and much more difficult to pin down. So what should you do when you're still holding a tag when the deer seemingly go underground?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about finding bucks after the gun seasons have laid the pressure on thick. The guys discuss how deer respond to pressure, likely hotspots for deer concentrations, and how to go about putting boots on the ground to locate the pressured bucks you're after.

For real information that will help you afield next week, we also have Andrew Buck Michael from WSYX in Columbus.  Andrew is a long time Ohioian that spends a lot of time outside and knows the importance of an accurate forecast for those outdoor activities.  He gives us a run down of what the gun season should like, as well as the rest of the year.  He discusses thermals and a few other topics during the segment.
