On this episode of The Western Rookie Brian and Dan are joined by Chris O’Neal, a big game hunter and shed hunting enthusiast from Wyoming.

Chris grew up in South Dakota pheasant hunting from a young age. As he got older his girlfriend’s dad introduced him to big game hunting for whitetail deer & antelope. Chris’s passion for big game hunting grew the more he learned. He decided to level up his hunts and bought a bow.  On his birthday in 2012 he was able to kill his biggest buck, a 177” monster. Present day Chris lives in Wyoming and loves to shed hunt and chase bulls. He devoted himself to learning everything he could about elk hunting and made it a mission to kill a bull elk. He had no idea what was in store for him on his first season hunting the west. This episode shares those stories and so much more.

Come along with the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast as John travels back in time and educates his younger self. This episode is the lone ranger version of the what did you learn series John has been doing the last few weeks, but instead of just looking at the 2022 season, John goes back even further. John highlights some of his "ah ha" moments from his 18 years of chasing whitetails, where he started from ground zero and learned most of the knowledge he has now from the school of hard knocks.

John tells the story of when he first learned how important wind and scent control were when chasing a creature who literally lives and dies by its nose. Many of these topics have been covered at one point or another, but this episode compiles them into a single list, and deep dives into each area. Some of these topics are great for young or newer hunters, while others are more directed at the advanced listeners. No matter your skill level, the topics in this episode are great to keep in mind, and all of them are things John wishes he would have learned 18 years ago.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick launches a new ongoing series, the Emperor’s Table.  A pseudo-ideal event where creators of the Sportsmen’s Empire are invited to share their go-to sharable wild game meals.  First entry on the menu is given to us by Marcus Ewing, host of the Average Conservationist and Michigan Wild podcasts.  Conversation revolves around “average” moments in the field, taking advantage of the outdoors in the winter, and Marcus lays out his rendition of a classic party pleaser, and angler’s go-to that will for sure go over well.  Pull up a seat to the Emperor’s Table on this episode of Huntavore.

Marcus is a Native to Michigan and has a heart for the outdoors.  Marcus tells us about his shortened deer season this year because of a job change, and some of his favorite “average” hunter experiences.  Some of which were captured on trail cameras.  A very cool snapshot of him at full draw on a buck, and then a series of photos we can all relate to; early triumph, sobering realization, and defeat.  Wildgame wise, Marcus finds himself in the basic, unadulterated camp.  Live fire from a grill or smoker, salt, pepper, garlic.  He lets the animal dictate the flavor, rather than try something to fancy that could overpower the taste.  His culinary practice is also in that basic category so keeping things simple and uncomplicated helps him create wonderful meals for his friends and family.

Marcus’ contribution to the Emperor’s Table is Fried Walleye.  A midwest staple fish; white, flaky meat, mild flavor.  Heating oil in a cast iron skillet, going for the shallow fry, Marcus is a wet batter guy, cutting his whole fillets into thirds, coating in a batter that uses a citrus flavored light beer.  Nick adds a tip, by cutting your fillets on a bias, 45 degree angle, to get more surface area and get more crunch.  To take his humble offering to the next level, Marcus says to turn those fried pieces into amazing tacos.  Cabbage slaw, wetted down with crema, lime, and any seasoning that fits your fancy.  Make sure to stop by and grab a listen to Marcus on the Average Conservationist and Michigan Wild Podcasts, both on Sportsmen’s Empire.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, the gang argues over the difference between country music and country radio and asks what makes up a country song … it’s usually something about boots, beer, woods, and mama right? The team also addresses two very important questions: 1) Do you take the chance of eating gas station breakfast before a hunt? And 2) What’s the worst part about planning a kid’s birthday party?

Bryaden goes on his first duck hunt with Derek and the guys recap the exciting two-day, late season public land hunt. Brayden jinxed it as Derek’s bag limit prediction was right on the money. Other hunt high points include talking about the trouble of properly identifying waterfowl on-the-wing and where you go when you “gotta go” wearing waders in the duck blind. They also talk about some duck hunting etiquette and share some tips and tactics that are sure to help you on your next hunt.

In other news, the GoWild Camo hoodies are now available at: GoWild The Hidden Hoodie Limited Edition (timetogowild.com). We also want to get your feedback on the longer podcast episode format: Feel free to rate and review with your comments!

A Deer Hunters "Ah Ha" Moment

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy
Public Land

In 2019 Dane Whitsett made the decision to go mobile in his approach to bowhunting whitetails. In his very first hunt of that season he saw more in a single sit than he ever had hunting from the field edges. During that hunt he had an encounter with a beautiful 8 point buck he named Ohio, and from that point on it was Ohio or bust. Unfortunately, a neighboring hunter was able to get a lethal shot on Ohio and was gracious enough to share the news with Dane. Did Dane give up, nope!

Later on that season sticking with his mobile hunting strategy he was able to sneak in to a pocket of timber that was holding a lot of deer. From the ground Dane had an encounter with an absolutely huge buck that was chasing a doe. Does Dane capitalize? Listen to this episode to see if he he has a long drag or sad walk back to his truck. Trail Cameras & Off-Season Scouting Mountain Bucks w/ Beau Martonik

Many of the best hunters in the country would agree with the statement, "you kill your bucks in the off season."  Time spent this time of year scouting and analyzing trail camera data are valuable tools to put the pieces of the puzzle together during fall. This is especially true in areas with rugged, vast terrain which generally speaking hold lower deer densities; typical of the big woods in Pennsylvania.  Here, the time investment may be quite a bit larger than most would think in this setting, depending where you set your goals!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Beau Martonik.  Host of the East Meets West Hunt Podcast, Beau is a diehard mountain buck hunter from Northern Pennsylvania.  Beau shares his experiences pursuing mountain bucks and how he uses cameras over a duration of a few seasons not to just find bucks, but also to fine tune his approach and timing when hunting these areas.  We discuss "soaking" and clustering cameras, a 3-year timeframe of data intel prior to investing hunting time, off season scouting and how to prevent making a pattern in your travels, interpreting trail camera data, and in-season scouting to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  Lastly, Beau emphasizes that we all have a different style and level of enjoyment for hunting, and that it's important to mold our own style of preparation that fits our lifestyle and schedule.

How Aaron Hepler Tackles Post-Season Scouting

Big Game

Bowhunting
Public Land
Strategy

Deer hunting success in the fall of 2023 starts NOW! Many of the best hunters out there have one thing in common: they scout more than they hunt. Now is the perfect time to get a jump start on your scouting for the year. The woods are as open as they will be, much of the sign from this past fall is still visible, and if you're fortunate enough to have snow, deer trails and beds will stick out like a sore thumb. This is also the lowest risk time to scout. No need to worry about spooking deer onto your neighbors property, running a buck out of his core area, or ruining your next hunt with pressure. The deer have all year to forget about your intrusion! With that said, many are tempted to move on to other outdoor pursuits this time of year, and that's great. But make sure to set aside some time for what is likely the BEST time of year to really break down the areas you hunt and learn how the deer use them.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler about his approach to post-season scouting. Aaron is a serious public land deer hunter from Pennsylvania. He consistently gets on above average deer for his area despite intense hunting pressure. One thing that makes him so successful is his commitment to scouting. As you'll hear in this episode, for Aaron, post-season scouting begins as soon as his buck tag is full. Tune in to hear how he fine tunes his understanding of the areas he's familiar with, how he locates and breaks down new areas, and how he begins to formulate a plan for the next hunting season. Enjoy!

Calling In-Season Audibles with Rendell Erik

On today's podcast Garrett speaks with guest Rendell Erik. He's been on the podcast now a few times to talk about scouting and hunt recaps. Based in Iowa, much of his focus is on finding and targeting the biggest and oldest bucks that he can find across a variety of public land pieces that he keeps tabs on. Today's episode is a little different. It's more about calling audibles, dealing with challenges, trying to make the best decisions on the fly as possible when plans A, B, and C blow up. Often Rendell Erik fills his tag earlier in the season before the rut kicks into full gear. This year, after sacrificing some of his season to scout and hunt with a good mutual friend of ours who had drawn a non-resident tag, he had to dig deep and hunt throughout the rut and even into the later gun seasons. He also saw more pressure this year than in years past, and had dry conditions and crop rotations that made early season patterns less repeatable than normal. This is an insightful episode because because it looks at how you can take a good mental approach and take the right actions when things aren't going your way.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 159 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Josh Raley from the How to Hunt Deer Podcast and the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast.  Both of these podcasts air on the Sportsmen’s Empire on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Josh was a great guest to have on our show and we really enjoyed this chat!  We dove down some gear rabbit holes in this one.  So, if you are into that type of stuff, I believe you will enjoy this one!

Josh was able to attend his first ATA show this past January and he shared with us some of the items that he really liked from the show and then some gear that he really enjoyed using this past hunting season.  We then discuss how things are really evolving when it comes to hunting gear.  Really pushing the limits for maximizing how efficient our bows are, the mobile gear we use and everything else. This was a fun topic to chat about because everyone is going to use different gear for all aspects I just mentioned.  So, it was great to hear what Josh’s and Dimitri’s take was on the trends of hunting gear and where it is heading.

We wrap up the episode having Josh talk about his success during this past hunting season and what all went into that.  From there we get into some postseason strategy as well.  I  hope you enjoyed this episode and if you are heading to the GAOS make sure to stop by the Tethrd booth on the weekend to say hi!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John continues his "what did you learn" series with returning guest Tyrell Roy. Tyrell is one of those under the radar killers, who constantly harvests mature whitetail bucks with his bow year after year. Tyrell is fortunate to hunt some fantastic whitetail country in north west Oklahoma, and every year fills most of, if not all of his tags with his bow. So it only makes sense that he is a great candidate for the what did you learn series.

Tyrell and John take turns talking about the ups and down of their seasons, and what they learned along the way. Tyrell takes us to his DIY elk hunt in Colorado, and his once in a hundred lifetimes moose encounter! Ever had a rutting moose drool on your chest while trying to stomp you into the ground? Well Tyrell has, and he does a great job of bringing you along for the action. John talks about gaining access on private ground out of state, and Tyrell recalls his brief stint with target panic, even after years of success harvesting bucks with his bow. The guys also talk about not getting ahead of yourself on opening day, how you should never stop scouting, and how important it is to take does if you love hunting whitetail deer in the great state of Oklahoma. This is a great episode looking back at the 2022 season, and once again is meant to encourage you the listener to reflect back on what you learned this past season.

This is another interesting episode that is a different point of view from someone in our hunting community. A lot to think about.

It's also important that we as members of this hunting community open our ears and listen to each other even if we may disagree. Because at the end of the day, being divisive is the worst thing that can happen to this fragile way of life. Enjoy!

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler about his stellar fall when he was able to tag his first elk and a great public land whitetail in Pennsylvania.

Aaron is a diehard public land hunter. He shares his knowledge and experience of chasing public land whitetails on a couple of different outlets including Truth from the Stand and Exodus Outdoor Gear blogs. But he doesn’t just write about it. The proof is in the pudding, and Aaron is incredibly consistent in getting on above average deer on public ground. Last September, Aaron put his skill to the test hunting elk in Colorado and was able to tag a great bull just a few hours into the hunt. A few weeks later, Aaron was also able to take an awesome PA public land buck. Check out this episode to hear how it all went down!

This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we're talking to Jake Lishen about how to make a game plan on southern public land bucks when deer are entering into the post rut phase. For many of us, it's easy to decide to hunt deer like it's the rut when you're within a few weeks of the peak. Especially when you're on an out of state hunt. What Jake talks about is how him and his buddies analyzed the sign on their trip to Alabama, determined it was in fact later than peak rut in that area, and started inching closer and closer to a mature buck based on his sign alone.

In this convo, Parker and Jake just have a candid conversation breaking down what Jake did to play the odds in this hunt. January in Alabama can be a great time to be in the woods and it sounds like Jake and his friends had a heck of a time enjoying it!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 158 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Carl Kossuth from Tethrd. Carl is the Chief Designer for Tethrd.  This was a fun one to record because out of all the relationships that I have been blessed with since we’ve started this journey Carl is one that happened spontaneously.  We actually quickly mention that in this episode, but we also dive into when Carl got the bug to shoot with the longbow and his passion for that.  This was a fun conversation because we haven’t explored that yet on the podcast.  After relistening to it, I just might have to fiddle around with one this spring!

In this episode we cover Carl’s successful 2022 season and what led to that success.  We dove down some in season scouting techniques that Carl really focuses on to put himself in the best position to kill a buck.  This episode also wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t discuss some gear.  Carl shared information regarding the new Tethrd Lockdown Saddle! I can’t wait to try this out myself at the GAOS in Harrisburg!  Hear also what Carl is most proud of when it comes to developing gear for Tetrhd. I hope you enjoy this episode and if you are heading to the GAOS make sure to stop by the Tethrd booth on the weekends to say hi!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

The white tail season is winding down to the final days, but predator season is ramping up.  This week the boys are joined by Micah, Nate, and Andy of the Missouri Woods & Water podcast.  These guys are outstanding hunters in general, but have found a special niche in the predator game in Missouri.  While spending time with them at the ATA show, the guys decided a coyote hunting 101 discussion might be a good one. These guys are PhD’s in predator hunting, but this introductory course, will get you headed in the right direction.

Around the state, not a lot going on.  Seasons are coming to the close and a new year ahead of us.  Paul continues to gear up for Turkey season.  The NWTF conference is nearing, so he’s practicing his strut.  Andrew spent the weekend grinding meat, and being scared shitless by the neighbor hood doe. Special guest, Mo, of the purple coat mafia joined the show (briefly) this week.

The guys will be out at the Great American Outdoor show in Harrisburg on February 6 and 7 in booth 412 spending time with the folks at GoWild.  Stop by and say hi!

Have a great week and be safe if you get out in the woods!

Small Game, Big Bounty with Jonah Curtis

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Jonah Curtis, an impressive gardener and small game aficionado.  They unpack a whole range of topics on a number of rabbit trails that eventually lead into squirrels, rabbits.  Discussions revolve around a mild taste and flavor,  How a few bag limits add up fast, simple easy preparations are sometimes the best, and Nick has the opportunity to try something completely new, raccoon.  Jonah gives some advice with cooking a ring tailed bandit.  Plenty of delicious tid bits on this episode of Huntavore.

Small game hunting is an absolute must this time of year.  Now that the rush and intensity of deer season is over, a walk in the woods with friends or family is a breath of fresh air.  And besides, it's time to get payback on those bushytails for acting like that huge buck behind you. Jonah lays out a couple of his favorite ways to use squirrel, fried and shredded.  He equates it bluegill with the pan fried, there are a hundred recipes, but fried squirrel done right is tops.  The second is braised and shredded.  The mild flavor makes it a great companion to dumplings and pot pies.  Rabbit is similar and boasts a larger bounty.  While Jonah farm raised his, a couple bag limits of rabbits would fill the freezer pretty quick.  Great way to diversify the freezer.  Nick had the opportunity to bag a large raccoon boar.  This has been on his list to take and try and that day has come.  The meat looks rich, and is covered in loads of fat.  Trimming the fat and glands helps in any off flavors, but Jonah gives a few tips when preparing your raccoon for a tasty treat.

The guys talked about how far is too far when doing a hang and hunt, and how far is not far enough. They discuss treestand height and shot angles, hunting out of enclosed blinds, and even some waterfowl talk about whether being hidden or having lots of decoys is more important. No matter what you chase, it's important to look back on the experiences you had and learn from them for the future. Once the hunt started, Garrett paired up with a marine corps vet to hunt with. They ended up killing deer on back-to-back-to-back evenings, and Garrett describes some of the hunts in more detail which were a combination of pre-sets, hang-and-hunts, and still hunting in the rain. Hear how even success brings challenges and how persevering leads to his success.  From struggling with shooting his bow, Cam was able to gain the confidence back and get the job done.  For the ND hunt, Cam shares what he needs to see from the field in order to go after a deer and how that totally changes when he goes to Iowa.  For just shy of two weeks, Cam’s Iowa story had me in total awe.  It is something that I believe every whitetail hunter dreams about one day when they have the chance to hunt Iowa and from this story it did not disappoint.  Cam wanted a specific experience, and Cam got it.

Exodus Outdoor Gear just released a brand new Rival cellular camera and they will be at the GAOS in Harrisburg in two weeks.  Get there early to snag one if you are interested and Cam also shares what he will be doing himself with some arrows at the show!
