On this episode of The Western Rookie Podcast, Dan and Brian have Ryan Stieg on to talk about getting more tags each season.

Ryan grew up in the flat land like both Dan and Brian, but like the hosts, caught the western bug during college and started piecing together how to get out west as much as possible. Ryan has had incredible success with North Dakota’s second chance draw to get rifle Whitetail Buck tags in underrated units while building points and using his bow tag to chase Mule Deer each fall in the badlands. Ryan has taken this same strategy to Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado to show it is possible to have success on Elk, Mule Deer, and Antelope with easier-to-draw tags if you’re willing to put in the work.

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast the guys get to talk with the host of The Huntavore podcast, Nick Otto about the fun world of deer jerky.  All deer hunters know that deer jerky is the most popular venison meal/snack out there.  But what makes deer jerky so good and can you step up your jerky game, or maybe you are just starting the process of making jerky.  If so, this is the show for you.  We talk about using muscle meat versus using ground venison and the benefits and limitations of both.  We get into Nick's favorite way to dehydrate deer jerky as well.  He breaks down the usage of a smoker, oven, dehydrator, etc. and what he likes and dislikes about each method.  Nick also talks about the usage of cure and some of his favorite ways to prepare deer jerky.  Enjoy the show!

Rain is falling, temperatures are rising, and the days are getting long. All of these things can only mean one thing, spring is here! This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is going all in on spring turkeys. Fellow Sportsmens Empire podcaster and National Wild Turkey Federation employee Paul Campbell joins John this week to talk about the excitement of chasing spring gobblers. The passion Paul has for these birds is more than evident as he and John cover a wide variety of topics surrounding one of America's favorite game birds.

Paul and John share one thing in common, neither of them are any good at using a mouth call, one of the most popular turkey calls on the market. Paul does a great job of discussing mouth call alternatives, and why you might use one over the other. The guys also talk about locator calls and when a certain one might be appropriate. Paul and John talk a little bit about the different habitat types that turkeys live in, and how different calling turkeys in deep timber is compared to the open plains. Over all, this is one of the best darn turkey talks the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast has ever had.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick calls up Andrew Muntz and Paul Campbell of the Ohio Outdoors Podcast.  This duo is a great pairing, Andrew, being a whitetail guy and Paul, a Turkey fanatic.  Nick does a fly by on how their 2023 seasons went and their follow up celebration meal, that may surprise you.  In addition Nick gets into the details of what each of the guys would bring to the Emperor’s Table, where Paul does a culinary flex on his Turkey dish.  All this and a bunch of fun on this episode of Huntavore.

Andrew and Paul are hosts of the Ohio Outdoors Podcast, and Paul being the host of How to Hunt Turkeys, both airing on Sportsmens Empire.  Andrew is an accomplished bowhunter who loves nothing better than chasing whitetails.  Paul, is a turkey guy through and through, and with the help from Andrew, got back into chasing deer.  Both guys were successful this year in the deer woods.  Andrew went through many ups and downs, close encounters and near misses that made for an epic tale of getting his Thanksgiving buck.  For his celebration meal, Andrew went beyond just utilizing, and donated that buck to Farmers & Hunters feeding the Hungry.  Paul was able to harvest 3 deer in 18 minutes giving him a load of venison right now.  His go to was backstrap done up in the smoker, paired with a hand chopped chimichurri.  Now to the Emperor's Table, Paul goes for the fences with a Citrus Brined Smoked Wild Turkey,  and Andrew submits another fried walleye submission, using his wife’s breading mix and Paul’s tartar sauce.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan kicks off his Whitetail Habitat Improvement Series with hunting property consultant Tom Peplinski. Tom breaks down his "Thick and Thin" approach to improving his hunting properties. Tom talks about first setting short and long term goals. As of two years ago Prime Archery has a look to their bows that set them apart from everyone else. Their quad-cam design was one of the big reasons their bows became popular with the serious bowhunters. That's why it was such a big surprise to the entire archery industry when they came out with a two cam system. On this episode, Dan talks with Chief Engineer, Nate Grace, about what that transition looked like and how it led to their new CORE Cam System on the new REVEX series lineup.

We're going way south to Florida this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. Parker is joined by Ricky Bullard & Spencer Ford to talk about their processes to finding public land bucks in Florida every year. Did you know that some parts of Florida open up for deer season in late July, and parts of Florida don't close until late February? That means a deer hunter could hunt 2/3 of the year and never leave his home state! Ricky and Spencer took advantage of the late season rut just last week in mid February, and both killed great public land bucks. In this episode you'll hear the story of these two late season bucks, and the strategy used to get them in range.

Hunting is about the adventure and the path you take to reach your destination; having a big set of antlers is just a bonus!  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we sit down with DJ Hoshauer and discuss his eventful 2022 archery season.  DJ is a family man that loves sports and loves hunting.  He does everything in his power to set himself up for success each fall - not only from a scouting and physical preparation end, but also as a father, husband, and employee.

The bucks are finally starting to drop those antlers and that means one thing: IT'S SHED SEASON!!!

Whether you are one of those chomping at the bit to get out to find the first bone to hit the ground or you count sheds as a happy accident while post-season scouting, there're no doubt everyone loves to find shed antlers! But what can we REALLY learn from them? Are sheds good for more than just man cave decor?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Dwayne Jones of Shed Season about converting shed finds to fall deer hunting strategy. Jimmy always wanted to film his hunts and have his own show but when life got in the way those dreams started to fade, that’s when he finally decided to go all in and create Country Traditions. He started posting to YouTube for his friends and family to follow along with his life and the rest is history! This episode is full of stories from chasing whitetail to watching rednecks do dumb stuff in the mud.

In today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett lays out a short and sweet planning method to help you scout efficiently as we get closer to early spring and prime-time for most post season scouting. It's key to remember what the main focus is for post-season scouting, what you can learn, but also what you can't. Then use the amount of available time combined with goals to methodically pre-plan routes and loops and adjust as necessary. It's an easier method to ensure you gather the most amount of good intel in the time you have available.

Andy is probably most know for starting Ross Archery, his music, and a 10 year run hosting one of the most popular hunting shows on the Outdoor Channel. On top of that, and owns several companies outside of the hunting industry including a patriotic brand American Rebel.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 161 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Tennessee native Hayden Ferrari.  This episode was a fun discussion to have with Hayden because I was able to hear the passion and drive that Hayden has to become a more well rounded hunter.  Although growing up in TN, Hayden has a bunch of ties to PA!  

To start this episode off we chat about the relationship between bowhunting and sports and how that has helped the two of us when it comes to doing whatever it takes to be a better hunter, archer and what it takes to tackle adversity.  We follow that up with what are some key attributes that have elevated his skills as a hunter.  From making adjustments from past seasons, becoming more proficient in reading maps, scouting and getting outside his comfort zone.

Hayden had a fun and successful hunting season in 2022.  He breaks down his strategy that led to his success as well as his buck story.  One new thing Hayden tried this past season was going out of state for a whitetail hunt.  He shares his experience of scouting before the season in KS, to not pulling that tag and then ultimately just doing an over the counter MO hunt.  We wrap this episode up talking about some of Haydens favorite gear that he enjoyed using this past season!   Enjoy this fun episode!

While turkey hunters in many states ring their hands about the future of the wild turkey in their states, Wisconsin turkey hunters have a lot to be thankful for. Once extirpated from Wisconsin, the wild turkey is an incredible testament to the impact sound conservation practices and volunteer organizations like the National Wild Turkey Federation can have for the game animals we love. As a turkey hunter, it's important to understand where we are, where we cam from, and where we're going in the future if we want to pass down the pursuits we love so much to the next generation.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Jared Van Hees(Habitat Podcast) discuss his property ownership journey. Jared explains his first land purchase, buying small acreage and what he considered essential for buying land. Jared discusses his work and effort on this small acreage and what areas he focused most on. Jared identifies the importance of food plots, screening, timber stand improvement, logging, native warm season grasses, tree planting, waterholes, water tubs, mock scrapes and tree plantings.

Jared discusses actions he first wishes he took to improve his 15 acres. From failure to success, Jared describes the things he would do over again to improve his property. Jared identifies actions that help him excel on his property and shoots three big bucks. Jared provides tactics to improve and direct movement for deer on a property.

Jared breaks down small acreage compared to large parcels and how he goes about getting more social activity on his property. Jared discusses setting up mock scrapes, to include location, tree type and special techniques to improve and concentrate movement. The third and final instalment of the "what did you learn" series drops this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. John is joined by Josh Garroutte to once again break down their 2022 hunting seasons and figure out what they can learn to make their future hunts better. This was a great episode to have Josh on, as he did a lot of learning during his 2022 deer season. A typical November finds Josh chasing whitetails on the ground in states like Kansas or Iowa, but since he didn't draw a tag in either of those states, he spent the entire month right here in Oklahoma chasing bucks in the mountains.

After growing accustomed to a more spot and stalk form of hunting over the last few years, 2022 had Josh going back to the basics and more traditional styles of whitetail hunting. He spent time studying scrapes and licking branches, diving deep into herd health with protein feeds and minerals, and working on his shooting form mid season. John also threw in a few lessons of his own, like why you SHOULD NOT hunt your best spot, why you should hunt for yourself, and how he found himself once again learning that trail cameras don't always tell the whole story.

Welcome to episode 1 of the Limbhanger Turkey Hunting Podcast. We're glad you're here! Spring is coming soon and there's not much worse than going into opening day without a gameplan or at the very least having knowledge of a gobbler in the area you hunt. We're joined by Jonathan Boheme (aka Catman) to talk about how he prepares for turkey season through pre-season scouting. 

Catman has earned the right to talk on the subject, as he consistently finds success on public land turkeys within the first few days of the season in his home state of Tennessee. Pre-season turkey scouting has allowed him to keep tabs on turkeys in their winter flocks, and follow them as they start to separate closer to spring, leading to a lot more success early in the season. 

This podcast is packed full of laughs.  From missing a deer 4 times with a muzzeloader to hunting in a minivan.  We discuss the upcoming shed and scouting season with all the dead heads that are going to be found.  We then move on to the fact Dave can't score a deer to save his life.

We discuss crazy steve's cult house.  Dave also loses a deer to another hunter.  We bounce over to some scary stories hunting small game on public land.  We wrap up with a story of a horse in the woods and a game warden run in.   

Regardless of the task at hand, preparation and planning is a gateway for success.  Too often in the world of food plots folks try to put the cart before the horse.  Seed blends, food plot shape, planting methods, herbicides, all of these things are important but need to be addressed after the basics. One of the things that drives Mitch crazy is the amount of bad and/or misinterpreted information in the food plot world.  Many food plotters have a lack of understanding as it relates to fertility and properly preparing soil for successful plant growth.  Before you go purchase the next miracle juice or throw-and-grow mix, do the one thing that is cheap and yet provides the most information for getting started: TAKE A SOIL SAMPLE!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch invites his boss Eric Rosenbaum to walk us through the basics in food plot planning.  Eric is the owner and Senior Agronomist of Rosetree Consulting, a private agronomic consulting company that works with farms all throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and partly in Maryland and New Jersey.  A large part of the job entails making cost effective decisions with growers that maximize plant yield and profitability.  Nearly all of this begins with proper soil preparation!  Eric walks us through the basics of how to pull a soil test, where to send it, how to interpret results, how to address deficiencies in a cost effective but also efficient way (especially with minimal equipment), and more.  Lack of planning typically yields poor food plot results.  Pull your samples now, and plan ahead to achieve maximum plant quantity and quality.  Don't overlook the basics!

Listen to any deer hunting podcast this time of year, including this one, and you're sure to hear lots of advice on post season scouting, covering a lot of ground, and continuing the grind you only thought ended the with the close of deer season. But for many of us, time is limited. Sure, we KNOW we should get out, but after a season of hunting hard, it's time to get back to work, back to being a dad, back to being a husband. In reality, bowhunting is a pretty selfish thing that takes us away from many of our responsibilities for an extended period of time. When the season closes, for many, it's time to catch up on all the things we've been neglecting. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't TRY to get some winter whitetail chores knocked off the list.

Terry Kilmer is a 22 year old from Northwestern Wisconsin. For Terry, hunting has always been a big part of his life. He was blessed to have a dad who took him hunting and taught him much of what he knows about the outdoors. One of Terry’s main goals is to be able to excite and inspire the younger generation about hunting the way so many in the hunting community did for him.  Terry hopes that he can teach and share hunting through social platforms and content creation. Dan and Terry talk all about hunting stories and adventures from the past few years.

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by our good friend AJ Iaquinta from Knights of the Apex!  It is always a great conversation when we get a chance to catch up with AJ and just chat about life!  This episode is filled with various topics that include dad life, influencers, outfitters and getting the chance to meet Jocko.

AJ has been running Knights of the Apex over the last 3+ years where he does a phenomenal job with creating content surrounding gear!  We do get into his thoughts on this year's bows and how they stack up.  We also hear how he put in more time and effort in hunting his current state of Florida and what challenges he faced.  Early in the hunting season, AJ made the trip to hunt Illinois with some awesome hunters like Beau Martonik and Ryan Haines.  This chat led us to talking about his experience hunting at various outfitters and hit takeaways from those experiences.  

Like I mentioned earlier, it is always a great time talking with AJ and we look forward to the conversations!  I am looking forward to seeing what AJ has in store for Knights of the Apex this year because each year he keeps on killing it and I have a ton of respect for him!  Enjoy this fun episode!

Fellow outdoor podcaster and whitetail hunting nut, Beau Martonik joins Dan this week for a fun B.S. Session. Like Dan, Beau has been podcasting for several year and has been able to talk with some of the best deer hunters from across the entire country. On top of that, Beau himself is an experienced big woods bowhunter who throws a ton of time and energy into scouting each year. Marcus is a Native to Michigan and has a heart for the outdoors.  Marcus tells us about his shortened deer season this year because of a job change, and some of his favorite “average” hunter experiences.  Some of which were captured on trail cameras.  A very cool snapshot of him at full draw on a buck, and then a series of photos we can all relate to; early triumph, sobering realization, and defeat.  Wildgame wise, Marcus finds himself in the basic, unadulterated camp.  Live fire from a grill or smoker, salt, pepper, garlic.  He lets the animal dictate the flavor, rather than try something to fancy that could overpower the taste.  His culinary practice is also in that basic category so keeping things simple and uncomplicated helps him create wonderful meals for his friends and family.

Marcus’ contribution to the Emperor’s Table is Fried Walleye.  A midwest staple fish; white, flaky meat, mild flavor.  Heating oil in a cast iron skillet, going for the shallow fry, Marcus is a wet batter guy, cutting his whole fillets into thirds, coating in a batter that uses a citrus flavored light beer.  Nick adds a tip, by cutting your fillets on a bias, 45 degree angle, to get more surface area and get more crunch.  To take his humble offering to the next level, Marcus says to turn those fried pieces into amazing tacos.  Cabbage slaw, wetted down with crema, lime, and any seasoning that fits your fancy.  Make sure to stop by and grab a listen to Marcus on the Average Conservationist and Michigan Wild Podcasts, both on Sportsmen’s Empire.

In 2019 Dane Whitsett made the decision to go mobile in his approach to bowhunting whitetails. In his very first hunt of that season he saw more in a single sit than he ever had hunting from the field edges. During that hunt he had an encounter with a beautiful 8 point buck he named Ohio, and from that point on it was Ohio or bust. Unfortunately, a neighboring hunter was able to get a lethal shot on Ohio and was gracious enough to share the news with Dane. Did Dane give up, nope!

Later on that season sticking with his mobile hunting strategy he was able to sneak in to a pocket of timber that was holding a lot of deer. Many of the best hunters in the country would agree with the statement, "you kill your bucks in the off season."  Time spent this time of year scouting and analyzing trail camera data are valuable tools to put the pieces of the puzzle together during fall. This is especially true in areas with rugged, vast terrain which generally speaking hold lower deer densities; typical of the big woods in Pennsylvania.  Here, the time investment may be quite a bit larger than most would think in this setting, depending where you set your goals!  

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Beau Martonik.  Host of the East Meets West Hunt Podcast, Beau is a diehard mountain buck hunter from Northern Pennsylvania.  Beau shares his experiences pursuing mountain bucks and how he uses cameras over a duration of a few seasons not to just find bucks, but also to fine tune his approach and timing when hunting these areas.  We discuss "soaking" and clustering cameras, a 3-year timeframe of data intel prior to investing hunting time, off season scouting and how to prevent making a pattern in your travels, interpreting trail camera data, and in-season scouting to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  Lastly, Beau emphasizes that we all have a different style and level of enjoyment for hunting, and that it's important to mold our own style of preparation that fits our lifestyle and schedule. 

Deer hunting success in the fall of 2023 starts NOW! Many of the best hunters out there have one thing in common: they scout more than they hunt. Now is the perfect time to get a jump start on your scouting for the year. The woods are as open as they will be, much of the sign from this past fall is still visible, and if you're fortunate enough to have snow, deer trails and beds will stick out like a sore thumb. This is also the lowest risk time to scout. No need to worry about spooking deer onto your neighbors property, running a buck out of his core area, or ruining your next hunt with pressure. The deer have all year to forget about your intrusion! With that said, many are tempted to move on to other outdoor pursuits this time of year, and that's great. But make sure to set aside some time for what is likely the BEST time of year to really break down the areas you hunt and learn how the deer use them.

On today's podcast Garrett speaks with guest Rendell Erik. He's been on the podcast now a few times to talk about scouting and hunt recaps. Based in Iowa, much of his focus is on finding and targeting the biggest and oldest bucks that he can find across a variety of public land pieces that he keeps tabs on. Today's episode is a little different. It's more about calling audibles, dealing with challenges, trying to make the best decisions on the fly as possible when plans A, B, and C blow up. Often Rendell Erik fills his tag earlier in the season before the rut kicks into full gear. This year, after sacrificing some of his season to scout and hunt with a good mutual friend of ours who had drawn a non-resident tag, he had to dig deep and hunt throughout the rut and even into the later gun seasons. He also saw more pressure this year than in years past, and had dry conditions and crop rotations that made early season patterns less repeatable than normal. This is an insightful episode because because it looks at how you can take a good mental approach and take the right actions when things aren't going your way.

This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we're joined by a couple of our favorite creators in the space right now. This week the guys had the opportunity to head East to Harrisburg PA to spend a couple days at the Great American Outdoor Show.  While in attendance, they spent a lot of time at the GoWild booth visiting with GoWild Members, discussing gear, and meeting new people.  The time was well spent with new friends made and a few new things learned.

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Josh Raley from the How to Hunt Deer Podcast and the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast.  Both of these podcasts air on the Sportsmen’s Empire on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Josh was a great guest to have on our show and we really enjoyed this chat!  We dove down some gear rabbit holes in this one.  So, if you are into that type of stuff, I believe you will enjoy this one!

Josh was able to attend his first ATA show this past January and he shared with us some of the items that he really liked from the show and then some gear that he really enjoyed using this past hunting season.  We then discuss how things are really evolving when it comes to hunting gear.  Really pushing the limits for maximizing how efficient our bows are, the mobile gear we use and everything else. This was a fun topic to chat about because everyone is going to use different gear for all aspects I just mentioned.  So, it was great to hear what Josh’s and Dimitri’s take was on the trends of hunting gear and where it is heading.

Todd explains the lifecycle of grouse and how they choose habitat types to survive on the landscape. Todd explains habitat options and preferences that will overlap with deer preferences and related habitat. Todd considers ruffed grouse as an indicator species of diverse forest settings.

Jon explains the importance of grouse to deer and Todd goes into detail on how grouse habitat changes over the year. Todd details grouse foraging, nesting, brooding and courting areas and how to set those up on your local property. Todd explains why grouse are so sensitive to specific cover and the relative home ranges for grouse. Todd discusses the importance of both open and closed canopy settings and how they relate to nesting.
