Hey everyone, welcome to episode 152  of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Jim D’Agostino.  Jim is a part of our team of Antler Up and we couldn’t wait to have him on the podcast to chat about his recent success during the last weekend of the PA rifle season.  Jim shares his story on the mountain buck and what a team effort the whole weekend trip is!  This was Jim’s second trip with our friends from Pertnear Outdoors out of NY for this hunt and Jim wanted this year to be a lot different than last year's trip.  He took the last half year to get himself in better shape and he mentions how that helped him when it came to pulling the trigger.  We discussed his 2022 season takeaways and how that will lead into this spring/summer preparation already.

With Jim wrapping up the 2022 season with this buck, he plans on getting ready for the indoor season this year.  We will be doing a future episode where he finds the benefits of keeping yourself in “archery” shape.  In the meantime, if you are looking for a new set of arrows or need some bow work done and live in the eastern part of PA then be sure to check out Jim’s Keystone Precision Archery page! With the season beginning to wrap up in PA and other states, let us know what kind of episodes you are interested in hearing and if you had success this past year hit us up and come on the show to share your story!

Best of luck out there and Antler Up!

On this week’s episode, the guys sit down to talk with Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners in Ohio.  Greg brings his past years of deer hunting to Ohio to work with the Whitetail Partner consulting service.  Greg’s passion for white tails is evident in his work with designing and helping land owners with their hunting properties. Greg is a Michigan native, who gives his insight on how to utilize different land features from swamps to ag fields, and everything in-between. Greg also has the ability to use drone technology for mapping properties and utilizing new technology to take your property to the next level.

Paul was privy to a trip out west in the past week, where he got to do some special workouts with our friend Brayden from GoWild as well as the crew from Mountain Tough.  More info to come from Mountain Tough, but as we get closer to the New Year, now is a GREAT time to start thinking about healthy life style choices.

Andrew spent a lot of time the past week cleaning up his deer skull which is now hanging proudly in the living room. The guys are wrapping up the year and gearing up for the holidays.  Deer numbers from the extended gun weekend are in, and King Coshocton continues to reign supreme. Not sure if there are really any deer left out there, but congrats to them for continuing to bring deer to the freezers. Some Walleye and Perch hatch numbers are in as well.  Central basin yellow perch numbers are still down, but the Western Basin is well above average for Walleye and Perch.

This week we have a much needed change of pace on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Josh Taylor joins John to talk about the line of products he and his partner Morgan offer at Oklahoma Fowl Company. Based out of Oklahoma City, OFC offer a line of blind accessories to make the lives of waterfowlers both more organized and safer. From shell holders to magnetic gun rest, the products offered by OFC are designed and battle tested by hard core duck hunters. Wether you hunt from a boat, layout blind, A-frame, or homemade blind, OFC has a product to make your hunt more organized, and more enjoyable.

One of those hard core product testers is Josh himself, who has been chasing ducks and geese from Nebraska to Texas for years. After Josh runs us through the different OFC products, he and John talk hunting and it becomes very obvious that Josh has spent some time over a decoy spread. Josh gives a crash corse on hunting geese which is something John has done very little of in his life. The guys talk decoy spreads, blinds, and the difference between calling lesser and greater Canadian geese. Deer season may be ending soon, but there is still plenty of time to get out there and hunt some waterfowl!

On this episode of Huntavore, the chat goes beyond the meat and dives into the extras: organs, bones, hides, venison tallow even.  Nick is joined by Canadian guide, wild edibles connoisseur, and all around culinary adventurer, Stevie_funfur.  Together they pick over the pieces that are usually an afterthought when processing venison.  Which organs are they keeping and how does Steve prepare his for the kitchen, how stock and broth are both super important, and some possible avenues for  deer tallow.  Time for us to pick over what's left and glean some tasty tidbits on this episode of Huntavore.

Steve is a guide, wild edibles teacher, and all around cool dude who loves to play with his food.  From forage to gardens, Steve is adding to his diet and taking less away from the grocery store and the established food system.  Nick sought out Stevie after following along with his instagram stories of aging his whitetail doe in the far north, actually using a space heater and blankets to keep her from freezing solid.  On top of that, he was keeping the hide, scraping and salting to give to a craftsman who could turn it into leather.  First being a super cool idea, Nick also wanted to turn the conversation into using those under-used bits that get lost in the whole process of getting a deer in the freezer. Organs and items from the gut pile and how that can be a very intimidating aspect of hunting.  Liver and kidneys were the focus.  Broth and stock was also a great chat because of all the value it provides as a dish base and a powerful way to intake nutrients.  Lastly the guys chat about the assumed bad flavored venison tallow.  While it has an amino acid that makes the fat coat the mouth, it can be used for a whole number of crafts and uses.  For more info on Steve, follow along with him on his instagram @stevie_funfur

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jarrod Carter of Illinois about two successful deer hunting seasons. Jarrod breaks down his last two archery season where he had the opportunity to chase a couple large whitetail bucks. The guys discuss the terrain these deer lived in and how they traveled across the landscape. The key to Jarrods success over the past tow years is from being able to understand trail camera pictures and the ability to pull useable information from them. This led to Jarrod identifying patterns in target buck movement, that led to him staying out of the property until he started to get daylight pictures, that led to him being in the right place at the right time with a big mature buck within shooting range. Deer Camp 2022 Hunt Recap

Big Game

Public Land

Most hunters have a polar reaction to the orange army and rifle season; you either love it or you hate it.  While the tactics and styles used in rifle season drastically vary compared to archery tackle, it is still an opportunity for hunters to share one commonality - enjoy creation and the pursuit of big game.  Mitch used to dread the 2 week firearm season as this meant added hunting pressure in his hunting area, complexity to archery hunting, and the remote possibility that a target buck could be harvested by someone else.  Over time though, he has realized that no one owns the deer we chase, and when one dies another takes its place.  So instead of allowing the opening of firearm season to dampen the enjoyment of deer hunting, Mitch embraces it with friends and family.

On this week's episode, Mitch sits down at the breakfast table on a rainy morning at the close of a successful 2-day group hunt at deer camp.  Joining him is long-time friend and hunting buddy, Clayton Good, as well as a new guest and familiar voice on the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network, Andrew Muntz from the Ohio Outdoors Podcast.  Also at the end we are greeted by Mitch's Father, Jeff, who decided to hop on and share his side of the hunt including the buck he shot during the last drive of day 2.  We share stories, explain drive set-up and strategy, and the failures and successes that occurred throughout the week.  This episode leaves us ready for next year!  Thanks for listening!

Recovering Deer with a Drone?! w/ Mike Yoder of Drone Deer Recovery

Big Game

If you've ever made a bad shot on a deer, or worse, wounded and lost a deer completely, you know you'd likely give anything in that moment to know what happened to the deer. If this hasn't happened to you yet, keep hunting, it eventually will. Blood trails dry up. Weather conditions might make blood trailing impossible. In these moments, hunters have a few options. They can grid search the area, which blows the area out and risks bumping a wounded deer. They can call in a dog, which can be hit or miss and again risks spooking the deer. Or, they can call in a drone. Wait, what?!

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Mike Yoder of Drone Deer Recovery about recovering wounded deer with the help of a drone. Mike is blazing a trail in a totally new, controversial, but certainly effective new realm of deer recovery. In this episode, Josh and Mike discuss the ethics of using a drone, how he got into this, and what Mike has learned about how wounded deer act. Whether you think recovering wounded deer with drones is the best thing since sliced bread or believe it should be outlawed, give this episode a listen to learn what it's all about.

On today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett sits down with Troy Fowler (aka the Ranch Fairy) and Darrel Barnette, who some of you may have also seen on either the Ranch Fairy channel or watching the Hunting Public. Garrett put together a string jump timeframe dataset corresponding to arrow speed and time of flight for discussion. The data was derived entirely on video footage Garrett had from deer shot at inside of 30 yards, but mostly inside of 20. Much of the string jumping debate seems to revolve around longer shots and whether or not speed is irrelevant compared to how fast deer can react. But rarely do you hear people talk about the relationship for close range shots. The group discusses that topic and also some of the longer range unknowns. There's not really any agenda pushing in this episode. It's just open dialogue discussing a data set, how it might apply to your own decision making, what limitations are there, and what type of additional questions we still have and data we'd like to collect and analyze to continue to learn.

Deer season is winding down for many if not most, and it's time to sit back and reflect on our season. Did you get the buck you were after? Did you see the deer numbers you thought you should be seeing? Did the deer use your property in predictable ways? Were you able to access your hunting locations without bumping deer? All of these questions may reveal that our season could have been better from a deer hunting perspective. So what if you're unhappy with how your season went? If that's you, it just might be time for a hunting property tune-up.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about evaluating your hunting property and when it might be time to call in a consultant. Sam has year of experience with on-site whitetail hunting property consultation and provides top-tier habitat and hunting plans to his clients. Over the years, Sam has learned what works to attract and hold deer, and to influence their movement across your hunting property. Whether you just bought a new property, lease ground that you can manipulate, or have hunted the same 40 acres for decades, Sam can help take your deer hunting to the next level. Tune in to hear how Sam evaluates his hunting season, how he scouts his property once the season is over, and how he designs hunting properties to provide excellent hunting for his clients.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Josh Profitt about a 3 year search for a big public land buck. Josh talks about an unassuming piece of public land that had very low deer numbers and that held not one, but two, big antlered bucks. One of these bucks, given the name "Bones", caught the attention of Josh and one of his hunting buddies. At this point the game was on and the two of them started to scout, learn, and dissect the 500 acres this buck called home. There was a reason this buck felt comfortable on this piece of public, the cover was thick and almost impossible to access, so trail cameras played a huge role in learning this bucks annual pattern.

Over the three quest for "Bones", Josh had to overcome several obstacles like increased pressure when the word got out about this buck, even resulting in the loss of a couple friendships. This is an amazing episode that doesn't turn out the way you think it would.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Brett Konan of Kansas of about losing his main hunting property but still shooting a big buck. Brett talks about how out of the blue, the land owner on one of the property he had been hunting for several years told him that someone from a different state made an offer to lease the property and that they accepted. The caught Brett off guard and left him with only one small property to hunt that he usually saved for his kids. Luckily, one of Brett's good friends came through in a major way and let him his family farm. Instantly, Brett hung a couple trail cameras to see what was moving around on the property, little did he know a giant was already living there. The rest, they say, is history. Excellent episode!

Should Pennsylvania Reintroduce the American Marten?

Public Land

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are going back to the biology classroom.  We have a conversation with the state’s furbearer biologist: Thomas Keller.  Tom is a down to earth family man who enjoys hunting and trapping as much as the next guy in line.  When he reached out to us to share information about this potential reintroduction, skepticism was fairly high.  Is it really worth bringing another predator into this state?  Listen with an open mind and decide for yourself!

We discuss the road leading Tom into this position with the game commission and his passion for wildlife.  Next we dive into the background of the American Marten.  When was the Marten eradicated from Pennsylvania?  What are it’s feeding habits?  What is the preferred habitat?  Is the American Marten a threat to game populations such as turkeys and ruffed grouse?  What benefits does the American Marten have for the ecosystem?  Tom addresses all this and much more in our conversation.  The fear of the unknown is typically what breeds negativity, but after listening to Tom, you’ll have less to fear as a hunter and game species appreciator!

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Hampton Honeycutt of Leise Motors about their eBikes and how they just might make you a more efficient hunter. Ebikes can help you go farther, faster, and quieter than previously possible. For the mobile, run and gun public land hunter, eBikes can provide an edge over the competition. For the private land hunter, eBikes can help you preserve your ground by providing a stealthier approach. In this episode, the guys cover the benefits of eBikes, some of their many uses, and how to get the most out of this new tool.

This week on the show, Andrew and Paul sit down to go over some of the finer details of their trip to Michigan, Paul’s gun hunting in Ohio, and Andrew’s trip to Pennsylvania. The Michigan trip was to Drummond island with some success, some tag soup, and a whole lot of Scary Terry. Scary Terry you ask? Listen to hear more about the 300 lb real life Yogi Bear that decided to visit camp each night!

Andrew took a couple days to go work some deer drives in Pennsylvania with network host Mitchell Shirk of the Pennsylvania Woodsmen Podcast. A great time was had by all, and a few great mountain bucks hit the ground. A true deer camp, with lots of stories, a couple beers, and new friends was the theme of that trip.

Around the state, we have deer gun season harvest numbers, grant money for conservation, and ODNR officers being recognized for heroic actions. Our days for deer season are on the decline, but a few more opportunities exist. If you have the opportunity to get out, good luck and stay safe!

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick has a bucket list chat with food writer and Food Network personality, Simon Majumdar.  Simon lays out some knowledge and history of venison, including how venison has been viewed in the UK and how it differs here in the US.  Discussions on Tikka Masala, using yogurt as a marinade, and a food game called Good, Better, Best featuring a winter favorite, Pot Roast.  Pour yourself a dark pint, and settle in on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is joined by Simon Majumdar, food writer, podcaster, and Food Network personality.  Simon has been around the world, tasting food, understanding where it comes from, and how things are prepared.  In fact food is the language of his family.  “What have you been eating?”  instead of the usual “how are you?”  Growing up in the United Kingdom,  Simon had the experience of enjoying several types of deer; muntjac, roe, and red stag to name a few.  Given the system of how game is managed over there, you can purchase some from your butcher or market.  Here in the US, it is a different story.  Simon shows a real appreciation for hunting and fishing, because it is an effective tool for managing the landscape, and a more personally important reason, the wonderful wild meat.

A large takeaway that Nick got from this discussion with Simon is that the US is quite narrow in the way venison is prepared versus how it is prepared in the UK and in Europe.  Steaks, Straps, and burger reign supreme in what comes out of processors today.  Simon is encouraged that North American hunters are beginning to venture out past the normal smoked backstrap and trying new dishes.  Tradition is important, and old dishes need to be made, but can we make room for new traditions to be made?

If you follow the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast on Instagram, you may already know what this title is about. This emotion packed episode is about John's 2022 Colorado elk hunt, which started off with a bang when his truck was stolen from the hotel parking lot on the first night of his trip. John had been looking forward to this hunt with his buddy Nathan Jasper for a year and a half, but everything got flipped upside down when he stopped for a night in Denver and car thieves stole his truck and everything inside.

After a very expensive trip to Cabelas, John still went on and followed through with the hunt, but his troubles were far from over. An early snow storm dumped 8-10 inches of snow, making travel around the lodge near impossible. Trying to roll with the punches, John and Nate dropped to lower elevation to try and find the elk the snow had pushed down. All they found down low were hunters and land locked pieces of public that were blocked off by private landowners. This trip turned into a life lesson about trials and perseverance, and they are some life lessons that John will not soon forget.
