No Lowballers

Military Must-Haves for Us Nonmilitants

Firearms

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild sponsored by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about modern military firearms that have recently become available for civilians.

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild sponsored by GunBroker.com, we kick off our brand-new show with Logan Metesh of High Caliber History and Allen Forkner from GunBroker.com in the No Lowballers Podcast. We give a small taste of what’s to come and why you’re not going to want to miss this show each week.

Today we’re talking about modern military firearms with a few favorites that are now available for purchase by the general public on GunBroker.com. We chat about how some firearms were brought to the public from the military, along with some that first came from civilians to the military. How do these military-grade guns make their way into the civilian market?

The SIG Sauer MCX-Spear is all the hotness these days. We have a first-hand look at the SIG-MCX rifle. Most models on the market come with a two-position gas valve with a small number that made it out with the single, self-regulating value and two barrels to shoot the 5.56 and 300 Blackout rounds. There’s a heap of these rifles available for a great obtainable price right now if you’re interested! You can scoop one up through winning an auction or through a straight sale.

Is there a shift from small calibers in high-capacity magazines toward larger rounds in smaller frames? What are some of the differences between offensive versus defensive weapons?

Along those lines, we also brought out a SIG Sauer M17 pistol. Prices are all over the place on these but civilians are finding them. This is a popular surplus gun. We get into what exactly that means to be a military surplus item. How close are the models issued to the military to those available to civilians? We also learn about the naming convention behind SIG and other military firearm manufacturers. What makes a gun collectable and what does GunBroker.com do for the firearm collector community. If you want to learn about the history of your surplus firearm, there is a way to find it … listen in to find out how!

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

The No Lowballers podcast is a brand new joint venture between GoWild and GunBroker.com to explore the history and heritage of firearms. We hope to expose you to the vintage guns of the golden age along with newer, modern guns, specialty items, and a few other odd balls along the way. Jump in and come along for the ride!

The show launches every Thursday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.

Though it's hot and buggy, the summer is a great time to get boots on the the ground for some deer scouting. The woods are thick and green, but there is still much that can be discerned this time of year, such as preferred bedding, food sources that will be prime come opening day of deer season, and what bucks are hanging around the areas you hunt. One guy that scouts hard during the summer and has a solid strategy for hanging trail cameras is Brian Dombrowski of Wisconsin. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Brian about Brian's summer scouting and trail cam strategy and what Brian does to consistently get on big publi land bucks.

The Huntavore

Harvest Preservation & Wild Hogs w/ Jesse Griffiths

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Jesse Griffiths; Author, Restaurant owner, and champion of local eating.  This episode jumps right into seasonal food preparation, and of course we pick the brain of the author who wrote The Hog Book on how Nick can keep enjoying his wild hogs.  A lot to harvest and hold onto on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick had the pleasure of digitally sitting down with Jesse to talk about seasonal foods and Wild Hogs.  In Texas, seasonality is key.  When it’s in season and growing, take advantage.  When the season is over and the heat of summer comes, those precious produce or proteins will be drying up.  He talks about his restaurant, Dai Due and how when farmers are producing, that is the time to bring in the great produce, and then to spread the love, preserving that bounty is key.  Pickling, drying, freezing, you name it.  Meat is similar in that Jesse’s menu will adapt to what the rancher has available.  That nose to tail doesn’t have to stay in the house, but nose to tail can extend to the entire community.  To finish up, Nick does want to talk wild pigs.  Jesse explains like it that pigs are so variable from one pig to the next, and even season to season.  No water, limited food and graze, the product at that point will be gamey. When the rains come and forage blossoms, that’s when hogs can be their tastiest.

We are following up with part two of our conversation with Sherwood Schoch this week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman.  We picked up from last week with the continued development and material first used in Jennings bows.  Using trial and error they began to revolutionize the archery industry we know today.  One of the four authors on the National Archery Association manual is Sherwood - and he also played a large role establishing archery in the olympics.

With the connections Sherwood made in his career, you can imagine the stories and people he met along the way.  Stories with Fred Bear at Grouse Haven Lodge, and meeting celebrities like Ted Nugent and Ted Williams.  We cover it all in this episode, with the living archery legend, Sherwood Schoch.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 180 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Tethrd’s own Greg Godfrey!! Over the last 6+ years of diving down the YouTube rabbit hole of hunting videos, there was one that I personally followed because of some great DIY videos.  The individual that was putting out these great videos was none other than Greg Godfrey on his G2 outdoors channel.  From spray painting your sticks to building the ultimate truck camping experience Greg had a video for it.  Greg is also the Co-Ownder of Tethrd.  I have spent a good deal of time with Greg and have learned a lot and continue to learn from him.  This episode we get into some really great information when it comes to preparing for your season RIGHT NOW! So, if you are gearing up for your out of state trip currently you will want to listen in to hear the good, the bad and ugly from Greg!

Kicking this episode off, Greg shares how effort really plays a role in his everyday life.  I asked him an unorthodox first question and I couldn’t agree more with his answer and I believe a lot of you will relate to it.  From here we get into the real good stuff about planning right now for the upcoming season.  What this looks like and how you can avoid making some simple mistakes before you leave and while on your hunt.  We discussed some hunting stories and how it is not always about the kill on the hunt, but rather the individuals you share camp with that make the trip.  We get into tactics when you are on these trips that will help you be ready for the opportunity and we wrap up the last few minutes of this episode with sharing the new products that Tethrd just released like the LockDown saddle, Fold & Go and the Scorpion.  Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Bowhunting

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, guest Bryan Meyering shares the story of his 2022 Michigan buck. Bryan wasn't a serious hunter, but in 2018 he picked up a crossbow and headed back in to the timber to chase a good buck that showed up on his in-laws property. Then, in 2020 Bryan decided to pick up a "big boy bow" and start shooting compound again. This past year a 150" Michigan monster show up on trail camera and seemed to be running the same pattern every week. He did his research and found out what wind he needed to access the trail this buck was using. The stage was set, but the upcoming youth season made him nervous knowing that the landowner had a couple kids hunting the property. The youth season past, and the buck was still on the same routine. Check this video out for the rest of the story!

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Ben Harrison of the Bowhunting League is back and he brought along some friends. If you haven't heard of the Bow Hunting league, it is a family friendly nationwide bow hunting competition that is completely free to enter. The main reason it remains free is due to the help of great sponsors like the ones that joined in on this episode. Ryan Stricklin of Native Ground Land Co. and Bren Chapman of Okie Land Bow Hunters archery shop are two of the Oklahoma based sponsors of the league, and they joined Ben and John to talk about all the ins and outs of the competition.

Oklahoma has held its own in the competition over the years. Last year Oklahoma was second in entries, and multiple Oklahoma Teams finished towards the top of the leaderboard. While it is called a competition, the league is much more about camaraderie and bringing folks together rather than tearing them apart. If you don't have access to prime hunting ground, don't worry. There are all kinds of prizes to be won, some as easily as just signing up! Did we mention it's free?

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk with Alex McKay all about the ins and outs of Maine lobster fishing. We cover his story about how he began lobster fishing and his journey from then until now. The guys also do some talking about an upcoming fishing trip, if they can pull it all together, and hopefully Alex gets to join in while he’s here!

Alex tells us all about Maine lobster fishing. He covers any and everything about lobsters! From what it’s like to be on a lobster boat fishing in the brutal cold of Maine to what time of year the lobsters taste the best! He talks about the legal requirements to be able to catch lobsters in Maine and what lobsters you can and cannot keep. Alex warns the guys just how dangerous the seas can be, both in itself and other territorial fishermen. He also spends some time talking about upcoming protections for right whales and how some of that may change the way lobster fishing is done.

Of course we then pivot to food; how can you talk about lobsters without talking about lobster rolls?! However, absolutely do not mention cream cheese when it comes to a lobster roll! Alex describes to the guys his perfect lobster roll, and even invites them up to Maine to personally craft one for them!

Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. Not only do they influence how deer move across the landscape, but hunting with thermals in mind can be the difference between you watching as a white tails bound off through the timber or you getting a chip shot at your target. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. Eric hunts the hill country of southwestern WI, so he is no stranger to thermals, how they impact your hunting setups, and how deer use them to their advantage. Tune in to learn how to capitalize on thermals where you hunt!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 180 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Jake Vernon!! Jake resides in PA, but had a really unique upbringing when it came to hunting.  Growing up Jake traveled a lot to Kentucky to hunt whitetail, then had the opportunity to live in Montana.  This is where Jake seemed to really sharpen his skills as a whitetail hunter.  In this specific episode Jake and I cover a variety of topics and stories. To go along with this episode, please head over to our website www.antlerupoutdoors.com and on our In the Field page, Jake has an article written for you all.  So, listen to today’s episode and head over there to read his piece.

Kicking this episode off, Jake introduces his interesting upbringing when it came to whitetail hunting.  This was a story unlike any that I have heard so far.  I really enjoyed Jake sharing his story and then talking about his experience getting his son into the outdoors and particularly archery.  Following this discussion Jake shares some stories about the time he lived in Montana and the tactics they used to hunt whitetail and how these strategies have evolved for him over the years.  Jake and I shared a similar story when we hit our early 20’s in that we got back into bowhunting. From there Jake discusses how the last few years he has been successful in an unorthodox way.  When listening to Jake you just hear how much he just loves hunting whitetail and isn’t afraid to be different. For example, Jake does not spend a ton of time scouting during the “post-season” time frame, but rather uses the rifle season to hunt but scout for next year's bow season as well.  Throwing this strategy on top of his preferred method of archery, Jake just simply grinds to be the best hunter and archer he can be.  We wrap things up discussing goals, build upon your experience in the woods and upcoming plans for this year.  Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Iowa Hunting Expectations

Big Game
Bowhunting

Strategy

After waiting seven years, John finally drew a coveted Iowa bow tag. Now what?? This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by the Sportsmens Empire Emperor himself, Mr Dan Johnson. Being born and raised in Iowa, Dan knows a thing or two about the big bodied big racked bucks that call the Hawkeye state home. This episode is not as much about hunting strategy as it is Iowa specific details that an out of state hunter like John should know. After waiting years to accumulate enough points to draw one of the state's best units, John wants to make sure he stacks as many advantages as he can.

One of the main topics the guys cover is simply what caliber of buck John should expect to encounter. While most think there is a 200" deer behind every tree in Iowa, Dan makes it clear that that is not the case. There is however, on average a much higher caliber of deer and especially if you are on private land which John hopes to be hunting. The guys also cover expected weather conditions, if a saddle is worth it, terrain features vs deer sign, and much more. If you have ever hunted Iowa, or plan to one day do it, be sure to listen to this episode.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk with Paul Campbell from the 02 Podcast about every and anything turkey hunting related. He spent the majority of his season on the road chasing the thunder with some of his most memorable moments in the Everglades of southern Florida–it was HOT! Pro-tip: Don’t forget your Thermacell! He packed on the miles in pursuit of a Sunshine State public land Osceola, even after finding an unpromising sight at his camp site. He then transferred over to some private land for a completely different style of hunting hoping for success … find out if he finds it or not! Lots of firsts for Paul on his trip as well as plenty of excitement. Listen in to find out why he says he’d love to go back.

We also cover public hunting perception and how the atmosphere is changing. How do we get more people outdoors and hunting? Paul gives some great advice on how he thinks we can change the perception of anti-hunting and how we should showcase hunting vs how it currently gets displayed on social media. What do you think outdoorsmen can do to help promote the hunting industry in a positive light? Paul goes on to talk about getting to speak to a conservation science class in Ohio. We talk about just how important it is to bring that curriculum into both high school and grad school levels of education as the numbers of hunters declines. Bass fishing teams and national archery leagues are really making a positive impact in that space but how else could we get kids involved?

We pivot to discuss just how stupid a whitetail can be during turkey season. Literally they'll walk right up to your lap! Also, Paul tells a story about how he comes to a whitetail’s rescue; the second time's the charm, right? Lots of fishing gear is dropping on the GoWild platform soon, as well as some collaborative stuff with gunbroker.com. It's going to be an exciting summer!

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last several years, you know about saddle hunting. While saddle hunting has been around for a long time, the resurgence in its popularity recently had many asking the question, Is saddle hunting just a fad? While it's not for everyone,  most deer hunters could benefit tremendously from having a tree saddle as another tool in the belt. They're undoubtedly lighter, quieter, and some argue safer than a tree stand. And for many, they can also make you a more effective and efficient hunter.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Jason Redd from Timber Ninja Outdoors about deer hunting and Timber Ninja Gear. Timber Ninja came on the market with the industry's first carbon fiber sticks. Now they've rounded out their offerings with saddles, accessories, and a lot of new cool stuff that's getting ready to launch. On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Charmaine Leath, an outdoorswoman whose passion for the outdoors led her to make a name for herself in the outdoor industry and has allowed her to hunt and fish all over the world.

Charmaine is based out of Southwest Colorado but hunts and fishes worldwide. She grew up in a small oilfield town in New Mexico, spending most of her childhood with horses and in the outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping. After graduating she moved around the country working as a medical aesthetician and fiddled with photography. She would make yearly tips home to hunt and fish with her dad but ended up settling down in a small country town in Colorado in her late 20s which is when she really dove deep into making her outdoor dreams come true.

Charmaine didn’t come from money and didn’t have an “in” in the outdoor industry. Despite not having a connection she dove in feet first. She already had an eye and love for photography and she wanted to partner and represent companies whose passion and desire she could align with and whose gear and values matched hers. Her first partnership was with SKRE Gear and from there she continued to grow in the outdoors gaining more brands, sponsorships, traveling and hunting more and working expos and events.

This week's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast covers a topic John has been wanting to talk about for quite some time. Greg Willis runs US Hunts, a website that helps hunters find leases for deer, waterfowl, varmints, bears, and more. Greg has been helping connect hunters with land owners for many years now, but has recently upped his game and his outreach. US hunts is a simple to use website, which can filter what a person is looking for, much like any other online shopping.

Greg and John obviously talk about Gregs business, but they also cover many topics that are good for anyone looking to lease land should know. Obviously everyone wants to kill giant deer, but there are other things to consider as well like neighbors, water, food, accessibility for both hunting and other recreational uses, and don't forget about the land owner themself. The guys also talk about the advantages to leasing over owning. Such as being able to hunt multiple areas, or being able to simply pick up and go if something were to happen to the quality of the game a person is pursuing.

On this episode of Huntavore, we join Nick after a series of events, both awesome and not so awesome.  First, he was humbled by an article entitled Roast What You Kill, and is reflecting on his thoughts.  Second, in preparation for a bachelor party, Nick prepared Carnitas, and Venison Barbacoa to be slung out as blackstone tacos on a tailgate.  Finally, Nick was again humbled by a wall of water and ice coming from his freezer.  All sorts of ups and downs on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is solo on this episode, and reflects on an article by Greg Morse.  Expanding on the Proverbs 12:27, Nick is noticing areas where he has gotten worn down and lazy.  In the examples it doesn't just point to hunters not roasting their game, but points to areas where we as men have lost motivation and slacked.  The Beautiful thing is we can alway get back up, and get better.

Link: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/roast-what-you-kill

Next is what we were waiting for, and that is the Carnitas and Venison barbacoa on a tailgate.  Nick turned out almost 60 of these tasty birra tacos using the cooking liquid from the barbacoa.  Simple add ons like cheese, onion, cilantro, and a chipotle drizzle sauce make these babies a home run.

Last is a reminder to us all who eat out of the freezer.  Ajar doors are an ever present danger.  Be vigilant and have fail safes for these meat safes.  Nick talks about his quick plan to move the still frozen solid bounty, but also discard the thawed door items.  He also lays out the plan to be proactive about protecting that door.

Timber Rattlesnake Hunting Knowledge Dump

Predator Hunting

Strategy

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we have a treat for you reptile fans!  We were joined by John Hebenthal who is a rattlesnake hunting phanatic!  John loves the outdoors and all creatures that walk it... or slither it!  He takes passion learning as much as he possibly can about wildlife, and sharing his knowledge with those who are willing to listen.

We begin by learning how this fascination began followed by his journey rattlesnake hunting.  Along the way you'll find that John is not afraid to open some books, scan the internet, read peer-reviewed research, and collaborate with experienced snake enthusiasts.  John has soaked in rattlesnake knowledge like a sponge!  We discuss tools of the trade, safety, biology of rattlesnakes, seasonal habits and patterns, map scouting for snakes, and much more!

Vantage Point Archery, Ohio BHA, and more!

Whitetail

Big Game

This week Andrew sits down with the team from Vantage Point Archery, VPA, to discuss what this broadhead company has going on in the hunting market.  VPA is based out of Fort Wayne Indiana, so just next-door.  This company has been around since 2009, with all American made steel broadheads.  They offer a variety of single bevel, two blade, and three blade broadheads perfect for big game hunting.  The conversation stems around tuning up for the upcoming season, how to choose a broadhead, and proper maintenance techniques.

The guys also got to sit down with Henry Distad of the Ohio Back Country Hunters and Anglers.  Henry gives a quick run-down of all the MANY things happening at BHA and their summer event, Muster in the Marsh, from July 21-23 in Conneut Ohio.  Check out their website musterinthemarsh.com for more information, but it sounds like an awesome event is ahead!

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Best Season to Date w/ Mike Lindahl

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 178 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Mike Lindahl from Domain Outdoor.  Mike was on the podcast two springs ago talking about how to improve your land and his company Domain Outdoor.  However, this episode Mike and I had an enjoyable conversation where we were able to just catch up! Last time we saw each other was at the 2022 ATA show and throughout the year we always keep tabs on what each other is up to.  So, we decided to catch up over a podcast for you all to enjoy!

Kicking this episode off, Mike lets us know what is happening with work and how much Domain is growing.  One aspect that really caught my attention in this discussion is how individuals over the last few years have turned their land habitat management into a year round process.  This is obviously great for Mike and Domain, but I love to hear how much he and his crew are still able to help individuals out with creating the best property they can.  From here I know Mike is a big golfer so we quickly share some golf stories and then discuss his best season to date!  Mike killed his biggest whitetail this past season with some great friends in Kentucky and a great buck in Wisconsin with his family.  Hearing the traditions he has with his friends and family in Wisconsin reminds me of what a lot of us hunters have here in PA.  Mike also shares his excitement for the Alaska caribou hunt that is on the horizon for this upcoming season! I really enjoyed this episode and having the opportunity to catch up with Mike! . Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!
