American Beech Good or Bad for our Deer

Big Game

Whitetail

In this podcast, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) discuss American beech and the benefit on the landscapes. Tim explains the general benefits of beech in the markets today. Can you have too many beech trees on your property, Tim explains.  Jon and Tim discuss our forest today and what has happened over the years that have made certain properties most inclined to have American beech and minimal diversity.

Tim discusses what to do when most of your property has been degraded and the remaining trees, like beech, remain. Tim discusses other tree varieties and those that stump sprout, providing value for our deer herd. Tim discusses beech bark disease, and how to identify it. Jon discusses the benefit of beech on the landscapes and how he has seen the use by deer and other mammals. Jon discusses the importance of beech, nut production and an increase in utilization by bears and in increase in bear populations accordingly.

Tim discusses what not to do when it comes to managing your forest, and what species he wants for economic purposes and for deer. Jon discusses the importance of having diversity and why he prefers to have beech on his property in pockets, managing for specific trees. Tim explains what trees to leave on the landscape and how he approaches beech trees that are tolerant of beech bark disease. Tim goes into detail on how to evaluate your forest and handle beech brush and what equipment he uses to remove beech. Tim discusses hack and squirt methods and what tree species he prefers to kill on the landscape. Tim explains when is the best time to cut diseased beech trees.

Fishing
Strategy

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk about our recent fishing trip to North Carolina with Jason from Timber Ninja Outdoors. We made a quick dash to North Carolina, arriving at the campsite at night where a whole can of worms was opened. Did we mention that it was wet? Rain, treacherous waters, and bears? made for a REALLY interesting trip, listen in to see just how crazy it was!

The river really threw it all at it on this quick trip. It beat us up both mentally and physically but we toughed it out and everyone had some success. We learned the ins and outs of where the fish wanted to strike at, even if it wasn’t always convenient for us to hit those spots. This trip was definitely a doozy but Jason invited us back, next time for a longer trip, and we’ll definitely be going back!

Make sure to keep logging these episodes and listen in next week for some cool rewards with our friends over at Gunbroker.com.

Lincoln Rohn, owner of Packer Maxx, came into the studio this week on Michigan Wild. Nate and Lincoln talk about Lincoln’s passion for deer hunting which started in the late 80’s. Ultimately his passion for deer hunting led him to be the owner of Packer Maxx. Packer Maxx was a company that Lincoln purchased after using the product for a handful of years on his family’s property. A tool that has been key to increasing his habitat and deer quality for years as well. Lincoln gives a good breakdown of all the different products at Packer Maxx and the uses for them. He also owns Five 2 Outdoors, a food plot seed company. So his local shop in West Michigan is really a one stop shop for all food plot needs. Nate explains how he has been there and finds great value in the opportunity to see and feel a product before purchasing. The podcasts ends with lots of whitetail talk, including the great fall Lincoln had last year. Some big whitetails hit the dirt. If you are looking to aid in your food plat game make sure to look to Packer Maxx and Five 2 Outdoors.

Grizzly Attack with Dr. Bradley Johnson

Big Game

Public Land

Dr. Bradley Johnson and his three friends embark on an annual adventure into the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. The signs at the trailhead caution folks to “Be Bear Aware”, yet in the past, Brad and his cohorts have had only one encounter with a Black Bear. Despite the low odds of an attack, they arm themselves with bear spray.

During the final stretch of the 8 mile hike to their chosen camp site, Brad is anxious to get there and pushes forward, separating him from the rest of the crew. As he begins to crest the final summit, he spots not one, but two Grizzly Bears no more than 30 yards away. Before Brad can formulate a plan to distance himself, he can quickly see they are both in a full charge. As he scrambles to remove the safety of the bear spray, a lesson learned from childhood prompts him to make his next move. A move that very well played a role in saving his life.

As the rest of the story unfolds, it can only be explained as a series of miracles. Brad gives credit to the strength and wisdom that GOD gave to all of those involved in ensuring his survival. This gripping story will have you on the edge of your seat.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles of Wisconsin about their 2023 hunt plans and "shooter" standards.

Chances are, the 2023 deer season is going to look a little different than previous years for Josh and Pierce. This means full plates and less time to hunt. With this in mind, the guys chat about their hunting plans for the fall, what their personal goals are for a "shooter" buck, and they even call their shot, choosing the date and location they believe they'll find success. Mobster Memories: Tales of the Tommy Gun, Colt 1911, & Other Mob Favorites

Firearms
Big Game

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about guns that have connections … to the mob and organized crime. If you love the mobster scene and the classic mob movies, find out which of these guns you can take home to own yourself from GunBroker.com! What are some of the best mob movies of all time?

We kick things off talking about the Thompson Submachine Gun a.k.a. The Tommy Gun. Is the Tommy Gun the quintessential gangster gun?? Did you know the background of this story starts near Louisville? Kentucky certainly has several more ties to the mob era–find out what other connections those are! Host Logan from High Caliber History recounts the exciting story of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, an event that made the Tommy Gun famous. Also be sure to check out The Mob Museum in Las Vegas to learn more about this and other historic events that shaped American history. Why did the military have no interest in this firearm when they first considered it?

Next, we’re talking about some of the handguns that have been associated with mobsters but also have had their place in the military, like the Colt 1911. Logan mentions a recognizable name in the firearm industry who has a highly unusual, ultra-modified 1911. Allen talks about why mobsters were able to out-gun police and law enforcement. We also take a hands-on look at the Smith & Wesson Military & Police .38 Special, a revolver that eventually went on to become the Smith & Wesson Model 10. We also peeked at a Colt 1903 Hammerless .32ACP. These calibers seem small by our standards today, but in their prime they brought plenty of knockdown power. Brad makes a great point about why both mobsters and military soldiers enjoyed these pocket pistols.

We also talked about the game-changing National Firearms Act of 1934 and how that shaped firearm purchases for the future. This is when the federal government started to place restrictions, and more came with the Gun Control Act of 1968 and then the Hughes Amendment in 1986.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!!

The No Lowballers podcast is a brand new joint venture between GoWild and GunBroker.com to explore the history and heritage of firearms. We hope to expose you to the vintage guns of the golden age along with newer, modern guns, specialty items, and a few other odd balls along the way. Jump in and come along for the ride!

Welcome to the 100th episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman!  It's hard to believe it's been 2 years already since the beginning of this show.  Thank you all for your support!  On this week's episode, Mitch is joined by 3 guests he has personal connection to - his father Jeff Shirk, and his two grandfathers Raymond Shirk and Kenny Mengel.  Mitch grew up hunting with these three, harvesting his first deer with them, and hearing all the stories of their hunting experiences at each of their deer camps.

We begin by telling the stories of how each camp began, one of which started out of an old school bus!  We share many stories including first deer, first bucks, first bears, camp comradery, family fun, and more.  You'll get to hear their perspective how deer hunting has changed over the last 65+ years for better or worse.  Stories of changing deer populations, changing hunting dynamics, but all centered around deer camp and those annual traditions that make Pennsylvania hunting heritage strong.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 184 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by a good friend of mine Josh Kirchner.  Josh, known as the Dialed in Hunter on his social media accounts, has made a name for himself in the hunting world over the last decade with his hard work and determination.  Josh was a guest on the podcast all the way back on episode 11!  It is awesome to have him on again and catch up with the record button hit.  Within this episode we get into a fun conversation that will not only apply to western hunters getting ready to leave to hopefully fill a tag in the short couple weeks, but also whitetail hunters.  Some key topics we discussed in this podcast are how the goal to be more consistent started his Dialed in Hunter endeavor, his insanely successful 2022 season, going beyond e-scouting, planning on what, where and when to hunt specific states and thinking outside the box on a bow hunt.

We get an introduction to Josh  and how his love for the outdoors really came about.  Moving from NY and hunting AZ with his father.  From here we get into starting his writing career and how getting into this specific space is a difficult one.  From there we dove into some great stories from this past season where Josh was extremely successful.  It seemed like no matter where Josh was hunting or what animal it didn’t take long from him to notch his tag.  Then we get into what Josh does to go beyond just looking at the map and how he leveled up his game when it comes to e-scouting. Following this discussion we get into an article that Josh wrote for GoHunt and how no matter what species you are hunting or where you are located you will get something out of this topic, I promise.

Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

We speak on our ideas to structure the show better, especially with more highlights on what items the contestants take.

Brayden spends some time talking about a recent camping trip, which was a muddy mess! The fishing was a little to be desired but the trip definitely turned out good for scouting. Brayden learned some lessons while trying to fish the currents in Driftwood River, when all along there was an oasis right around the corner!

Brayden had an almost scary experience but managed to recover before things got too hairy. Dan covers some of his favorite gear to have while fishing, even if some of his modifications are questionable! This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, it's time for John to set the calendar for his 2023 hunting season. So tune in to see when John plans to be where, and what he expects to accomplish at all of his destinations.

It is going to be a busy fall for John. Nebraska velvet bucks, prime Iowa rut hunts, west Texas brush country, and good ol Oklahoma ranch land are all on the docket for 2023. Trying to fit all these states into a single hunting season is the issue. On top of a family and a full time job, John has his work cut out for him. He's not afraid of the challenge however, and is even trying to find a way to throw a south east Oklahoma bear hunt in the mix as well!

Vortex Week - Alaska Blacktail Hunt

We continue Vortex Week with an amazing story about a group of guys who headed to Alaska for a once in a lifetime blacktail hunt. Mark, Sawyer, and Eric share the story of how the trip was planned, the logistic behind the trip like what gear they needed to take, how much of food to take, and where they planned to get their water from. It didn't take long for the guys to locate both deer and bear and put a game plan together for the upcoming days. But the hunt wasn't easy, the guys battle extremely wet conditions and fog for most of the hunt but were still able to find success.

For most of us, Alaska seems like an impossible place to hunt, but the guys mention that the tags were over the counter and and for the most part affordable. The travel costs however were a little bit of a different story. This is both an entertaining and educational episode, about one of my dream hunts. Be sure to check out vortexoptics.com for all of your optic needs.

The Retro Resurgence: These Guns are Making a Comeback

Big Game
Firearms

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about old favorite firearms that are making a big comeback. Find out why this is occurring and who the big players are in this space. We kick things off talking about revolvers. Find out why Allen loves the Kimber K6. He also talks about the Taurus T.O.R.O Revolvers, the world’s first-ever optic-ready revolvers! Henry also introduced a very unique revolver as well.

Lever-action rifles are also seeing a resurgence–find out what’s driving this momentum! Aside from levers in their classic form, there’s a growing market for tactical-style lever guns. Dan talks a bit about his affinity for these new-style weapons and mentions the Internet Movie Firearms Database. If you’ve ever wondered what firearm they’re using in your favorite flick, check it out! And believe it or not, there have been take-down lever guns in the past.

Why exactly are lever guns and revolvers making a comeback? Is it romance, social media memes, simplicity, personality, ammunition improvements, generational influences, market niches, modern technology, Hollywood, history, trends, throwbacks, magazine restrictions, or something else?? No matter what motivates you, there is certainly a little something for everyone in this niche market. Head to GunBroker.com to start shopping around and find your flavor!

What about these new optic-ready revolvers and lever guns; is there a rising interest because the technology in optics has finally caught up? What influence have the advancements in ammunition quality, availability, and performance allowed these older armament types to make a big comeback? We asked Allen and Logan what they’d like to see along with what their predictions are.

We also touched on newer guns that are getting vintage aesthetics. Allen also lets us know a few rarities and oddities that closed on GunBroker in the last week … don’t miss his list!

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick has been placed on injured reserve for a few days due to a procedure.  While he's icing up, Rob Chippone joins the show to share some tricks or moves when frying fish and cooking whole piglets.  Rob is a big fan of the sous vide and we brainstorm how using that can prepare all kinds of meat for an outdoor intactactive barbecue.  Join us on an inspiring chat, on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is recovering from his vasectomy, which after an attack from kidney stones last fall, was a total cakewalk.  Rob joins in from his new home is South Carolina, where the guys talk a bit about fishing.  Rob likens being a sportsmen to jujitsu as in, the martial art has belts that show your progression, and how it’s about understand over who you beat.  Same goes for hunting and fish.  You earn your stripes not for the particular size of deer, but for what you know.  Conversation also jumps onto fried fish, and the many ways I can change up the same old same.  Think about Coconut Perch, I know right.  On top of that, the guys talk about how sous vide is not a one trick pony.  And Nick dreams about a Shish kabob around a smokeless fire ring.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 183 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by the big guy Chris Weist!  Chris is located in South Central PA, and had a crazy year last year connecting on 4 bucks in 3 different states!  When I listened to Chris on other podcasts I knew I needed to get him on the show to discuss some whitetail stuff.  This episode wraps up the mini series I did for the month of July, in what our guests are doing now to lead up to the season.  Chris was able to get ahead in the game so to speak, so it was interesting to hear how he tackles scouting multiple states for the quest to continue his whitetail success for this upcoming season.

We get an introduction to Chris and how his postseason panned out for him.  From turkey hunting & scouting in MD, gaining access to a new property in WV, scouting his camp in OH and continuing widening the net here in PA, we hear Chris get into his plans and more.  One of the areas that Chris is focusing heavily on is improving his trad bow skills, because this year he is all in on this style of hunting.  So, when it comes to the mental preparation and technique stuff Chris walks us through his training scenarios. Following this discussion, we get into the good stuff.  We hear how he is fine tuning, connecting the dots, wind mapping in older and new areas.  Setting his expectations for summer cameras, how he strategizes specific scrapes and what he is specifically looking for in scrapes.  If you are a continued listener to the podcast you know I love this stuff. We hear stories from specific hunts and a whole lot more from Chris during this episode!

Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Ryan Glitsky.  Ryan is a diehard bowhunter native to PA who spends a ton of time in the offseason scouting and learning.  Our conversation is all over the place revolving around whitetail deer and scouting during summer.  We run down many rabbit holes discussing camera locations, mock scrapes, funnels, and learning from them during a difficult time of year to read sign.  This episode should have you fired up for fall!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Eric Lance (Hunt Science Podcast) discuss the upcoming next several months and how they both approach their hunting properties. Jon and Eric discuss the top activity you can do this time of year to prepare yourself for hunting season. Eric explains the activity levels on his property and how he establishes routine happenings that do not dissuade his deer.

Eric discusses the methods of collecting data on deer to include GPS collaring and related information that can benefit our hunting. Eric and Jon discuss thermal drone imagery and how important using tools like this can be to enhancing our knowledge of deer’s whereabouts. Eric discusses fawn recruitment and techniques to evaluate survival at birth and otherwise.

Jon explains how to shrink deer movement on your property. Eric explains why not to focus on deer home ranges, but focusing solely on habitat is one of the more important facets that you as a land manager can control. Eric discusses things that GPS or telemetry studies do not tell us, such as how our deer behave in  social groups. Jon explains a theory that will enhance your understanding of deer movement and why summer and winter food is critical to enticing deer onto your property.  Eric supports the idea that spring and summer food is critical to our deer and how we need to support our deer through stress periods, improving the quality of our deer throughout the following years. Eric explains the impact of predators on the landscapes. Eric provides a surprising bit of rationale on why predator control may not be on the top of your list when it comes to deer populations and survival.

Live from the Total Archery Challenge at Terry Peak South Dakota, Ricky has a chat with his good buddy Rick Hanson.

If you’ve ever attended a Total Archery Challenge event, you have most likely rubbed elbows with the likes of Rick Hanson. His contagious laugh can be heard across the mountain as a sure sign that Rick is having a good time. Whether it’s with old time friends, or someone he just met, Rick is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Rick is an inspiration to many as he set out to hike what he coined the Crow Peak 100 in 2020. Rick, among many of his supporters, was determined to summit Crow Peak, nestled into the Black Hills of South Dakota, 100 times in a single season. Without a doubt, he pulled it off. That’s nearly 700 total miles with a combined elevation gain of 156,800 feet of elevation! In 2023, Rick also completed 6 major Black Hills summits, approx 35 miles, in a single day.

Ricky and Rick (Rick 2.0) discuss how they first got to know each other through a business that Ricky was a part of in 2010, called Pimp My Bow. They first met at a 3D archery shoot, Bowcast at the Bird, at Snowbird Ski Resort in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. After a day of shooting, it was clear that they would long be friends. Rick 2.0 dive into how simply amazing it is, that a bow can bring so many people together, to share in laughter and joy.

Rick Hanson is the curator of a social media following known as @projectrick. He discusses the purpose of this movement, along with its clever tagline,“Don’t Die Rusty”. Project Rick provides a daily dose of positivity through his eyes, which rarely miss a sunrise, and his words of encouragement have transformed many lives.

Hunting & Trapping in the Great Depression

Firearms
Big Game
Bird
Whitetail

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about several iconic firearms of the Great Depression era that have long been admired in the hunting industry. We start by visiting what hunting was like during the Great Depression era. Have you seen Teddy Roosevelt’s “Big Stick” Royal Grand Double rifle? The one he used to kill elephants, rhinoceros, and other big game in Africa? Find out where you can go see it on display in Louisville, Kentucky. Roosevelt worked really hard to preserve public lands and protect hunting for future generations. He was behind important hunting regulations such as the Lacey Act of 1900 and the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906. During this time, market hunting turned into subsistence hunting and the North American Model of Conservation was established.

One of these notable guns of the era is the Winchester 1894. We check one out in .30-.30 and learn why this lever action rifle became a popular big game hunting rifle by many Americans after the Army Calvary carried it. The Winchester 1894 then became available to the general population as an affordable and reliable firearm. Why is the .30-.30 such a popular caliber for whitetail deer hunting? The Winchester 1894 has also become a cherished possession that’s been handed down in families over the generations. What is it that just makes lever guns so cool?

Shotguns were also utilized during the Depression era but their popularity in America goes all the way back to the 1700s when smoothbore flintlocks were found throughout the colonies. When J.M. Browning came out with the Auto 5 (A5) in 1905, it completely changed the game as a repeating semi-automatic shotgun. Even how this gun came to market has a complicated and exciting story–find out how it all happened! There are so many different versions of the A5 out there now in many different gauges–head to gunbroker.com to see what’s available and find out which gauge is the most popular and why.

We also showcase the Winchester Model 70 that came out in 1936 during the Great Depression. This bolt-action rifle became an iconic gun and highly collectible in a variety of calibers and barrel lengths. There is a pile of these on GunBroker in a wide range of calibers and conditions. This rifle became the “Rifleman’s Rifle” and a true do-it-all rifle with a stunning aesthetic and function.

Finally, we talk a bit about the lifestyle of the hunter and trapper during the Great Depression era and why they used the firearms they did. What was the average wage? How much were pelts selling for? During this challenging economic period, hunting provided a means for individuals and families to obtain food and survive, supplementing the scarce resources available during the Depression era.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!!

Right now, much of the whitetail's range is experiencing pretty significant drought conditions. Whitetail destination states such as Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri are among the worst hit. This will certainly affect ag production, food plots, mast production, and even browse. If the drought continues into the fall, these conditions will create a difficult hunting season for many. But if you know how to adjust for drought conditions, you could be on your way to one of your best whitetail seasons yet.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about adjusting your habitat and hunting strategy for drought conditions. Sam shares how he adapts to drought conditions on his property, and how his scouting and hunting strategy will differ if the drought continues into hunting season. Enjoy!

This week on the show Andrew and Paul start off the second half of July in full whitetail mode.  Talking archery tuning, tactics, and some gear.  New partner to the show, Black Gate Hunting, is introduced with more information to come!  Paul and Andrew discuss events coming up around the state as well as some news.

Before the meat and potatoes of the show, the guys talk to Kirk from NW Pennsylvania to rehash some of the details about PA’s DMAP permits.  If you are considering hunting PA this year make sure not to miss that. And always refer to the state regulations book!

PA DMAP Info

The main focus of this weeks show comes from the chat Andrew had with Garrett Prahl, the DIY Sportsmen. Garrett is a very experienced hunter with many tips that he shares with us to help you in your July scouting.  Where to find beds, how to set up cameras, some tree knowledge and more.

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Why Diversity is King in Fall Food Plots

Big Game
Whitetail
Strategy
Bowhunting
Habitat

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we catch up with Al Tomechko from Vitalize Seed.  After discussing some big projects that took place during the off season at Al's place, we dive into Vitalize seed.  Vitalize uses a two-pass planting system with the summer mix called "Nitro-boost" and the fall mix called "Carbonload".  Al breaks down the plant species used in Carbonload and how they work together to provide the best food plot possible.

There are hundreds of different food plot blends on the market and thousands of different opinions.  Some would disagree that certain plant species cannot be mixed into the same blend.  However, with proper seed balance and ratio, diverse mixes can produce maximum tonnage that work together rather than compete.  Al follows soil biology principles when he and his team develop seed blends.  Diversity allows better nutrient exchange between plants, and wildlife can tell the difference.  Tune in to learn more about the "why" and "how" of Carbonload; you might want to consider planting it this year!

The Whitetail Checklist w/ Gregg Farrell

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 182 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by First Lite’s Whitetail Category Manager Gregg Farrell.  This is Gregg’s fourth time being a guest on the show, and with each appearance, I continue to learn every time he is on.  Gregg lives, breathes and sleeps all things whitetail.  I don’t know about you, but right now in the middle of July I am ready to be in full swing season mode.  Gregg and I kick things off in this episode catching up a little bit. Following that we dive right into what Gregg is doing and what he shares I believe is such a great perspective on how things have evolved for him when it comes to preparing for the whitetail season! So for this podcast episode we get Gregg’s preseason whitetail checklist covering what he is doing right now and the rest of the time leading up to the start of his whitetail season.

When it comes to planning for the whitetail season, Gregg shares his upcoming plans for how he plans out his hunts.  Obviously being the First Lite Whitetail Category Manager has a huge role in this, Gregg still gets a lot of time to hunt his property in WI.  Following this discussion we dive into what the months of July and August look like.  From prioritizing non-hunting items, developing game plans by e-scouting and being able to get boots on the ground. Gregg makes sure by the time the season rolls around that all his gear is dialed in and ready to go.  Then when the season kicks off, he uses historical data and reads current sign to make a move.  A really fun chat with a good friend and again someone who just LOVES hunting whitetails.  Check it out and let us know what you think!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Whitetail

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Rocky Burrus (SA Farm Management Service) discuss how to build your hunting schedule now for the fall. Jon discusses a future habitat day on his property planned for next summer. Rocky explains why he enjoys cutting timber in the summer versus the winter. Rocky discusses his food plot layouts and how to reduce predators near or within your food plots.

Rocky explains how to evaluate trail cameras and hunting data on properties and the process he goes through to collect data and how to process this information for next year's hunting season. Rocky gives specific details on certain types of deer that he believes that you can capitalize on to have success this fall. Rocky explains the importance of annual deer patterns and how their routine movement can lead to a mature buck’s demise. Rocky explains a Tennessee giant buck that fell to an annual pattern that proves his point deer are sometimes more consistent than we realize.

Jon explains his thoughts on deer movement, his own property and why to evaluate changes on the landscape that will better facilitate more interest. Rocky explains a new project he will be working on and what he feels like will change his property next year. Rocky details an approach to working with your neighbors/farmers to benefit your property. Rocky provides a specific example of when to hunt a particular buck in his area. Jon and Rocky explain a measurement of success on a hunting property we tend to forget about when trying to develop a property.

Jon and Rocky discuss the regional differences and the importance of considering techniques that pertain to your area based on your deer herd, related hunting pressure and hunting capability.

Shooting Fish in a Barrel

Fishing
Bowhunting
Gear

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Jacob, Brayden, and Arica tell Chris all about their most recent bow fishing trip with Cajun Bowfishing. They had a LOT to learn about bowfishing because it turns out normal bow shooting doesn’t translate over very well. The trip was an absolute blast, after learning the ropes and a few hundred shots they started to see a little success. Of course, naturally it turned into a friendly competition … listen in to see who has bragging rights now that they’re back home.

The crew had a heart-pounding trip bowfishing these fish and while the fun factor is there they also touch on the other reason why this is such a good trip. What is the reason? Because of how invasive the carp have become here in the US. Carp have become a huge problem in many states, especially bad at Kentucky Lake. They cover exactly what wildlife management would like for you to do if you catch or shoot one.

They also did a little big-head carp fishing at night. The only downside to that?! Bugs! Arica was convinced that every bug in existence was around their boat!

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

Rabbit Hunting is Legit

Dogs
Big Game

Small game hunting has been a passion for Tyler Thompson his whole life. On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate and Tyler discuss that passion, along with how Tyler helped Nate get rejuvenated hunting small game. For years they have really enjoyed running rabbits with their beagles from January 1st into late March. This conversation goes into detail for finding the right terrain, which includes how to use digital and in season scouting. They also break down how access is gained on private ground and the effort it takes.  Then a small deep dive into some gear they use, and what it takes to get started.

Overall Nate and Tyler love small game hunting and encourage people to get outside and enjoy it themselves. Nate also looks forward to Tyler's journey this fall as he wants to get more serious about bowhunting whitetails.

A Message For Young Hunters

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John has a message for young hunters. This episode is meant for those boys and girls in the 15 to 20ish year old range, who are looking to get a little something more out of their outdoor experience. John tells a few stories of the adventures he used to have hunting on his grandpa's land when he was in high school, and how others can safely have some of those same experiences. Even if your family doesn't have a chunk of private ground there is still adventure to be had!

One of the main things John stresses in this episode is safety. Looking back at his youth, John put himself in a lot of dangerous situations that could have easily been prevented, especially with modern technology. He also talks about affordable gear, clothing, and other useful tips for young hunters who don't have a lot of spare cash laying around. Oklahoma has so many amazing outdoor opportunities, and most of them are fairly inexpensive and just waiting to be explored!
