The Ruth Brothers joined Nate on Michigan Wild this week. Jeremiah and Treyton joined Nate in Wyoming for a spring black bear hunt in 2023. It was a great camp and they all three shot bears and have kept in touch since then. Nate dives right in wanting a season update and hearing the story of Treyton's buck. Which leads into the grind of a season Jeremiah had and how he stayed persistent even through harsh conditions.

The Ruth Brothers also make a point of traveling out of state every year and sometimes multiple states. This past year they had successful bear, turkey, elk and pheasant hunts. Throughout the episode they break each hunt down and share the stories of their success.

Over a great episode about family getting outside and sharing their passion for the outdoors. They also encourage people to give it a shot and have realistic expectations when they do go. They started small with Turkey hunts and have been hooked ever since.

John is back this week with another great episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. This week, John takes a little stroll down memory lane to look back at another amazing year in the great outdoors. From chasing turkeys with a bow in Nebraska to hang and hunts after giant Iowa Whitetails, it was a year he will not soon forget. Though he ended the season with a few tags still in his pocket, John had a great year on his old stomping grounds in Oklahoma. It's hard to complain about a year that involves tagging two mature bucks totalling almost 300 inches of antler.

After a look to the past, John then turns his attention to the future. He has been keeping an upcoming fall hunt a secret for quite some time, but it is now time to let the cat out of the bag. John plans to shift his focus in a slightly different direction in 2024, and a direction he has been pulled in for quite some time. All these plans and more are revealed in this episode so be sure to listen up!

How to Make Sure You Buy THE RIGHT Hunting Property

If you're a deer hunter, you've likely dreamed of buying your very own hunting property. A place where you can have total control over what is done to the property, a place to bring family and friends, a place to kill big bucks, a place to simply call your own. But sometimes, land ownership isn't all it's cracked up to be. The hunting on a given property may fall short of our expectations. We may have forces beyond our control that hamper our enjoyment of the property. Owning ground may prove to be more of a nightmare than a dream. So what should you do to make sure it's your dream that becomes a reality, and not your nightmare?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about buying a piece of hunting land. Sam is a habitat consultant and real estate agent in Wisconsin. The guys cover all the ins and outs of finding land that's right for you.

The guys talk about looking for specific terrain features, the impact of food sources and feed trees, intersecting trails, planning access routes, and how to take advantage of scouting in the snow. Another great episode, full of great information from  two hunters who take bowhunting very seriously.

Outdoors In Color with Joseph Jones

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Joseph Jones, the creator of the youtube channel Outdoors in Color. Joseph has gone about capturing his passions for both the outdoors, being a sportsman, and also being a father. Our talk has Joseph getting into why he captures his hunts on video, he replays a recent epic hunt for black bear, and how he enjoys bringing new members into the hunting fraternity. Per usual we end in the kitchen, where he breaks down his shareable meat treat and date night dish. A whole lot of fun on this episode of Huntavore.

Joseph Jones resides in North Carolina. He is in a great spot to be an outdoorsman. Literally a couple hours from the mountains, or a couple hours in the other direction to the ocean. Joe talks about his achievements in 2023. One he’s really proud of, is his oldest son getting his first unassisted deer. Being taught by his father, and now passing his knowledge to his boys is pretty cool. His channel reflects that feeling as well. Outdoors in Color is partially about he and his kids, sharing memories and at the same time, showing how accessible hunting can be. Going on the cheap, with big box store gear is still a great way to get out there. Joe is a real champion of being able to get started on their first adventures. He makes it a goal to meet new people and take them hunting, and at the sametime, go out on a limb himself and seek people who will take him on new adventures. His recent fall adventure was going on a black bear hunt, where he ends up 5 yards from the Bear, in thick reeds! We finish out talking about how jerky is his go-to meat treat to share, and braised shanks for date night.

Walther Firearms Manufacturing

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re in Fort Smith, Arkansas, at the Walther headquarters talking about new and upcoming products to look forward to from Walther Firearms. We start out talking about the Walther PDP, the PDP was built as a performance duty pistol. Walther set out to fix every complaint possible from user feedback on the PPQ to make the PDP a robust duty and competitive firearm. Cody from Walther talks about their approach to launching the PDP, instead of a slow rollout Walther launched five different models of the PDP at one time with multiple build options for each. This resulted in the PDP being the most successful launch for Walther. Tune in to this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all about the Walther PDP.

Next up, we dive into the PDP F-Series. The PDP F-Series was aimed directly at the female customer and law enforcement agents. Engineered completely for women, Walther changed quite a few things to make the ergonomics better for the female shooter. Reduced trigger reach, reduced slide force, and reduced grip circumference really made the F-Series a perfect option for the female shooter. Walther struck gold with the F-Series with the 3.5” version being one of their top sellers this past year. Listen in to hear all about the process of how the PDP F-Series came to be!

Closing out, we talk about the powerhouse of manufacturing Walther headquarters here is in the U.S. While the German heritage is still extremely important to Walther, they realize how important it is to have manufacturing here in the states to allow for products to reach consumers in a timelier manner. Dan speaks high praise of the manufacturing process that he watched while touring the Walther facility. Allen chimed in about how he was surprised to see the finishing being done in- house, which really gives Walther start-to-finish, complete oversight of the quality control that goes out the door to consumers. Allen closes it out with a rundown of some of the Walther firearms that he’s seen lately on GunBroker.com!

Detailed Bedding Area Creation and Timber Cutting Schemes

Bowhunting
Habitat
Whitetail

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by founder of Whitetail Landscapes, Jon Teater.  Jon hails from Tully, New York and consults with landowners throughout the country, primarily targeting the northeast.  Jon is extremely detail oriented - more than many consults you may have seen on YouTube or listen to on other podcasts.  This is one of the many things that sets him apart from others within the industry.  His attention to deer habits and their tendencies in terrain and hunting pressure dictate how he improves the layout and habitat of a hunting property.

We discuss many different philosophies of property layout and hunting strategies throughout a property.  We compare some other well known people's consulting strategies and recommendations, and then break down how different doesn't mean it's wrong.  Instead, it is a direct result of the environment and experiences with which that consultant lives and works in.  From here we discuss how Jon approaches cutting a bedding area.  This includes concepts such as "walls of cover" and segmenting deer with diversity.  Even if you are not a private landowner or hunter, there is a lot to unpack in this conversation revolving around mature bucks and how deer relate to their surroundings.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Colin Koskinen (Legendary Habitat) discuss  hunting season and complications that exist when hunting highly pressured ground. Colin details his soils, tree species and vegetation types that are in Michigan and how he breaks down this property. Colin explains mapping land and where big bucks exist. Colin discusses the benefit of succession and the combination of old field and young forest settings.

Colin discusses holding deer on small properties, busting through a buck age class ceiling, and working with neighbors and other hunters to be more successful. Colin explains his approach to tying hunting pressure to habitat improvements. Colin discusses buck and general deer bedding locations and how they use terrain features to advantage themselves. Colin explains the benefits of terrain and Jon explains how terrain can establish interest, bedding and movement.

Colin explains the importance of travel corridors and the significance of connecting deer in one location from the other. Colin discusses how to cut and add improvements in travel corridors to ensure deer are more resident and able to socialize and allow for better hunting opportunities. Colin discusses goals for his small property and how that aligns with each feature he is trying to amplify for interest and movement.

Colin explains how to build layers into a hunting property and what plant he uses to establish ideal conditions for deer to use and travel in preferred areas. Jon and Colin discuss water resources, vernal pools, natural springs, and the benefits of these areas on properties. Colin discusses non-native plants in wet areas and options to consider to remove these plants (i.e. reed canary grass). Colin and Jon discuss replacement plants for non-natives for higher deer interest.   Colin discusses bedding and stacking deer across a property to increase the hunting opportunities.

Colin discusses walls of cover for deer, hinge cutting and an example of how to apply walls of cover for hunting reasons. Colin explains how to cut walls in bedding areas versus locations around bedding areas.  Colin and Jon explain buying land, deficiencies on hunting properties and how to be smart with your buying decisions. Today’s show opens up with Derek telling an interesting story about his grandfather’s bass tracker boat. After his grandfather’s passing his uncle ended up with his boat in Maryland. Fast forward a few years later and a movie studio was looking for this exact type of boat for their movie! You won’t believe what movie it is, make sure to listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear what movie the boat ended up in!

Up next Brayden dives into his recent weekend hunting. Thinking his season was over the weekend before he ended up being free for one more go at it. Armed with a crossbow in hand, which he definitely checked to make sure it’s set this time after his previous trip with the bow. He set out and found a nice tree to sit by for his hunt. He apparently was in squirrel city, every direction he looked it was squirrel, squirrel, squirrel! Brayden waited for a while and eventually had a couple deer swing through by him. Tune in to hear what happened while he was on this hunt.

Closing out Derek talks about his hunt in Ohio for ducks. They drove up to hunt some public land timber, but an unfortunate timing of a massive cold front made these hunting plans difficult. A quick pivot had to happen so they headed to some private dry hunting to chase after some geese. They had decent numbers in the area but ended up just having to run traffic.

Although they don’t have a traditional home/work dynamic, planning time away from the family can still be challenging.

Walther Firearms History

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re exploring the history of Walther Firearms. We start all the way back at the beginning with a nice history lesson on how Walther came to be. We discuss Walther’s history in Germany, the firearms that Walther started with, and the opening of the United States location. We discuss the WA 2000, which is a super cool gun that Walther still gets questioned about today and why they still don't make it. It was a crazy-hard gun to make, but due to popularity in video games it has a pretty big cult following. We also talk about the Walther P38 and what it means for the history of Walther. Designed during WWII to replace the Luger P08 that was expensive to produce, the P38 skyrocketed into popularity. Arguably the most iconic gun Walther made besides the PPK, the P38 is easily recognizable in firearms history.

Closing out we talk about ergonomics and how Walther really kick started the importance of it when they launched the P99. Cody tells us about an amazing example of a P99, the Walther P99 La Chase Deluxe Special Edition. An absolute beautiful example of a P99, it was an awesome example of taking a polymer framed gun and upping the quality to the next level. The P99 is in the “Final Edition” phase now, this year will be the last year for the P99 so make sure to head over to GunBroker.com to pick one up today!

Winter Deer Hunting Counseling Session

As we close the '23 deer season everything is still fresh in our minds.  It's difficult not to begin planning our trips and goals for the 2024 season right now!  Regardless of whether we accomplished our goals or have room for improvement until next year, thorough planning prepares the way for success.  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch chats with good friend Andrew Muntz from the O2 podcast.  The boys reflect on their 2023 deer season, including Muntz's Drummond Island buck and his trip over to PA deer camp with Mitch (spoiler alert- he missed a buck!).

The conversation goes from 2023 reflection into 2024 planning - and becomes more of a counseling session for Mitch than a series of detailed strategies.  The guys discuss their attempts to resolve personal conflicts such as: enjoying peaceful time in the field, not allowing inches of antler to gauge a season, valuing time with friends and family, prioritizing family and responsibility over deer hunting, and much more.  Mitch is battling the path to take for his next hunting goal - how can you be successful with limited time?  It might not be the sexiest deer hunting conversation, but it sure is as real as it gets and comes from the heart.

Which Hunting Saddle Should I Choose?

Good news! There are a lot options for hunters that want to get more mobile...and most of what you want can be purchased "direct to consumer". Bad news! The sheer volume of information can be overwhelming...and it's difficult to know where to start or what exactly you want or don't want in a saddle. Sure, there are guys doing reviews on one saddle at a time or even a couple...but what about the broader product category? On this episode, Jacob does a high level walkthrough of his findings as he virtually examined 14 different saddles from 14 different saddle companies. Examining the pricing, design, features, and components of the "signature" saddle from each of the these companies allowed him to learn what he might purchase as his own upgrade.

It's a new year! Whether you're a new year's resolutioner or not, this is a time that most people are taking inventory and looking ahead at what they hope to accomplish in the next twelve months. For outdoorsmen and women, that often involves making plans to take a hunting/fishing trip or two, which can turn into quite the task if you don't have some practice.

In this episode, Pierce and Josh take a deep dive into their planning processes and unpack what all goes on behind the scenes that might not make it into the episodes you all hear. The guys talk about how they choose what kind of a hunt they want, how they pick locations to avoid crowds, taking care of the people around you, what their goals are for 2024, and so much more!

Today’s show opens up with Brad diving into his recent ground hunting adventures. He saw 8 deer in a couple hours but unfortunately most of them were outside of bow range. The odd thing is the two small bucks were fighting in January, which is definitely odd for this part of the country! He thought about making a stalk on them while they were tied up but decided not to make the push. The deer are showing back up to the property now but very sporadically, with the season winding down he’s on the clock to put a deer on the ground this season. We then swap over to Brayden who tells us all about an interesting deer trip. He went back to a stand where he killed a couple deer earlier this season. With an injured shoulder he decided to use Phil’s crossbow to make this bow hunt a little easier for him. With a very deery morning deer activity was almost assured. Mid-morning a nice buck shows up and starts coming his way, make sure to listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear what happens with this buck!

Closing out we go over the unlucky breaks we’ve all had this year. While a few of us have redeemed ourselves over bad shots we’re quickly running out of time for the rest of us to put a deer on the ground before the season is over! Make sure to listen in to the next few weeks to see what happens with the crew and if we manage to get a few more deer on the ground!

This episode of Michigan Wild is with returning guest Drew Hasler. He had quite the season and had a few major updates since the last episode he was on. Drew ended up killing his first out of state public land buck this fall. His success stemmed from spending time scouting before the hunt and relying on past experiences to pick the right tree. Drew also had the mindset of not leaving deer to find new deer and was rewarded after his second sit in this particular area.

For another first this past fall Drew was able to harvest his first big woods buck. This property is a place he has camp every year with a group of friends. It's usually very tough hunting with minimal buck sightings. However after some timber harvest and mild weather Drew was surprised to find a buck on the typical bed to feed pattern. Drew set forth and executed a plan on the last day of his hunt.

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about spies! We open up with Allen going over the International Spy Museum. He talks about technology that we use today in our everyday life that at one point was used by spies in military aspects. One of those examples is Bluetooth, which was an early spy communication and also used as a torpedo guidance system that we now use for things like talking on our phones in our cars or to connect your smartwatch to your phone. Logan dives into just how crazy the secrecy is within the espionage world and gives an incredible example of the DEER gun, which most intelligence agencies still deny its existence. Tune into this episode brought to you by GunBroker.com, to hear all about espionage and the world of spies!

We dive into the history of Wild Bill Donovan and how he’s linked to Ian Fleming, the author of James Bond novels. Ian Fleming was asked by Bill Donovan to put together a memo that then became the charter document for the OSS, the precursor to the CIA. There’s a rumor that as a thank you for the memo, Ian Fleming was gifted a Colt Police Positive that was chrome plated and engraved “For Special Services” by Bill Donovan but that gun has yet to be seen!

Closing out we go over our favorite bits of espionage history. The group has some interesting favorites, from using a civilian to take out your target, to trying to assassinate Fidel Castro by poisoning his beard. We also go over if everyone could only have one piece of spy gear, what would they choose to have? One heck of a great conversation on this episode of Huntavore.

So often in the Armed Forces, we hear about the strain on mental health. The obvious being combat and active fighting, yet the isolation and distance from loved ones can be daunting. I will be the first to acknowledge that I have no understanding of this. My guest Justin Spruiell does. He served as military police in several places, one in particular was Germany, where through a traumatic event, he found a way to get off base and fish some of the amazing rivers in Europe. Fast forward to now he works for BHA/AFI. Connecting veterans and active members with the outdoors in a recreational, mission oriented atmosphere. Deer season is winding down for many if not most, and it's time to sit back and reflect on our season. Did you get the buck you were after? Did you see the deer numbers you thought you should be seeing? Did the deer use your property in predictable ways? Were you able to access your hunting locations without bumping deer? All of these questions may reveal that our season could have been better from a deer hunting perspective. So what if you're unhappy with how your season went? If that's you, it just might be time for a hunting property tune-up.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about evaluating your hunting property and when it might be time to call in a consultant. Sam has year of experience with on-site whitetail hunting property consultation and provides top-tier habitat and hunting plans to his clients. Over the years, Sam has learned what works to attract and hold deer, and to influence their movement across your hunting property. Whether you just bought a new property, lease ground that you can manipulate, or have hunted the same 40 acres for decades, Sam can help take your deer hunting to the next level. Tune in to hear how Sam evaluates his hunting season, how he scouts his property once the season is over, and how he designs hunting properties to provide excellent hunting for his clients.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 206 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Dan Johnson! Dan is the founder of the Sportmen’s Empire that hosts not only the Antler Up Podcast but over 20 awesome podcasts.  Dan is also the owner of Full Sneak Gear which is a lifestyle clothing brand geared towards us hunters.  The other aspect of Dan that I find extremely relatable is that he is a  family man and a die hard bowhunter.  So, I wanted to have Dan on the show to discuss some current happenings in his life but also to hear his take on what it means and takes to be successful.  Tune in and enjoy this episode with the one and only Dan Johnson.

We led things off by talking about the frustration Dan and I have with that dang Elf we have to put out nightly before Christmas.  I am sure some of you will share in this laugh that we had.  Following this, Dan gets into it for what he believes has helped him be successful at hunting, running multiple businesses and winning the home life!  The key aspect of all three is discipline.  I couldn’t agree more with this statement, so no better way to kick off the first 2024 podcast than to hear how discipline can help you succeed in the new year!  Stay safe in the woods and enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Nate, Micah, and Andy have really invested time and money into the tools of the trade to coyote hunt throughout the calendar year.  The hunt dynamic compared to deer hunting is distinctly different in Nate's eyes, which is why he enjoys it so much.  We discuss tools of the trade: what are essential pieces of equipment, and what are the things that after using for a season you learned were a waste of money?  Nate shares a few exciting hunting experiences with us as well, which is a perfect way to begin the winter portion of predator hunting!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Skip Sligh (Iowa Whitetail) discuss Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Deer Health, Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), Baiting and Supplemental Feeding.  Skip discusses deer fertility, antler and body size and the benefits of supplemental feeding.  Skip is pro-supplemental feed and anti-baiting, specifically against feeding corn from a bait pile. Skip discusses his rationale and why this may be harmful to the overall health of our deer herd.

Skip explains the biological and scientific detriments of corn and how to supplement feed the right way to ensure deer health is preserved. Skip explains his opinion on bait piles versus food plots. Skip details the timelines related to his food plots and how the food remains available to deer all season. Skip explains the most nutrient dense food source for deer. Jon discusses options to utilize baiting and what you can do to help yourself or limit your neighbors.

Skip discusses the areas of the north with large vast forests and describes the best practices to attract and feed deer. Jon discusses tree species and what deer want in various trees and shrubs. Jon explains an option that creates greater interest than soybeans for deer on the landscape.  Skip and Jon discuss the process of timber stand improvement, Skip describes how to set up your property and why certain setups allow you to hold mature bucks.

Season Recap w/ Eric Mckay

Bowhunting

Big Game

First Episode of Michigan Wild for 2024 is with Eric Mckay. Eric Mckay joins Nate this week recapping his 2023 fall. Eric had a stellar fall, he was able to shoot a bull elk and harvest 4 whitetail bucks between Michigan and Illinois. Eric has chased whitetails in Michigan for almost 25 years and has headed west for 12 seasons, so this fall reflected years of hard work and determination. He has learned how to strike when the time is right and stay persistent throughout the fall. He discusses some of his insights he has learned over the years that has led to having better hunts and ultimately more success. He no longer just volume hunts and isn't afraid to be mobile and try new things every year.

Even with a stellar fall it came with its fair share of adversity which Eric didn't shy away from. Having a few arrow deflections and wounding deer was something Eric used as fuel to tweak a few things in his craft. Something that Nate also can relate to and along with Eric hopes encourages fellow hunters to keep working through the adversity.

This Hunt Stinks!

Bowhunting

Today’s show opens up with Brad going over his recent weekend hunting. It’s been quite slow with only one older mature buck on camera, and hardly any deer moving during daylight hours! He decided to give a hunt a go anyway but unfortunately it was very slow, besides the fact that a whole bus load of squirrels decided to play tag around his stand. His biggest problem is that he has absolutely no cover at all in the tree he’s in, which has made his spot very difficult to hunt. He decided to bounce his stand around to a different spot to hopefully score a little meat before the end of season. Make sure to listen in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear all about his new approach to hunting this area.

Closing out we discuss smells in the deer woods. From your own scent drag, to sitting up right on top of a scrape on accident we talk everything deer pee. Dan has a hilarious story about smelling deer on a recent hunt, well what he thought was deer. You’ll never guess what he was actually smelling instead. Along this topic Jacob and Brad talk about going to tour the Tink’s factory where all their products are made, and let me tell you that trip absolutely stunk! Tune in to hear all about the fun times they had touring the Tink’s facility.

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Hunting and Family with My Wife Mackenzie

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

A fan favorite is back on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week. John's wife Mackenzie joins him this week to talk about hunting, family, kids, and the balance of it all. This episode was a hit last year, so John decided to double down and go for round two. John and Mackenzie start off by talking about how much more challenging this hunting season was now that their daughter Hallee is getting older and fully mobile. Hallee is at the age where she needs constant supervision and is always getting into things. So when John took off for the deer stand it put a lot more pressure on Mackenzie. On the other side of the coin, John felt that same pressure which made leaving much harder on him.

The hope of this episode is to help all couples out there know that they are not alone. Life balance is tough, no matter if it's hunting, work, or just the hustle of modern day society. John and Mackenzie have found that communication and expectations are monumental in retaining a healthy relationship during the fall, and honestly year around. They go through the things that have helped them communicate better and get through a fun, but challenging state of life. Even if you are young, single, and ready to mingle, this episode is packed full of good lessons for the future.

On this week's Deer Season Special Bonus episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by PA native Aaron Pasquarette.  Aaron films his hunts and has the Legendary Pursuits YouTube channel.  We discuss the journey of filming your own hunts, then dive into the topic at hand: late season deer hunting.  Aaron has been taking out-of-state trips with family and friends each season; last year and this year he was able to wrap a tag around bucks in New York.  Aaron shares the stories of those hunts and the dynamic of a group hunt.  We also discuss tracking deer, flintlock muzzleloader hunting, and how Aaron hopes to connect with a late season PA buck this year.

Thank you for tuning into these bonus episodes during 2023.  We appreciate your support and look forward to bringing more great content in 2024.  Happy New Year!
