This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast the guys have on fellow Missourian Anthony Peoples to tell the story of an absolute beast whitetail he was able to take down a few weeks ago.  Anthony has known this deer for several years, and after some close calls and some heartbreaking series of events, he was able to put a lethal shot on this deer using his Black Widow traditional bow.  We are thankful Anthony came on to tell this awesome story.  Congrats man!

This week on the Michigan Wild Podcast, Marcus sits down with Pat Casey. Pat was born and raised in the upper peninsula of Michigan and has been an avid outdoorsman his entire life. Today, the guys get to talking about the tradition of deer camp and everything that comes with it. Deer Camp is something most of us Michigan residents grew up around, but mostly it was during rifle season; today the guys talk about archery deer camp and some recent experiences Pat shared with other hunters  both from Michigan and out of state. Marcus and Pat recap Pat's last two weekends of hunting around the state as well as his elk hunt from September. Welcome to Deer Camp!

We have another two-parter this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. First, John takes us through his weekend hunting adventure where a last minute change of plans landed him on a brand new piece of public land that might just be a hidden gem. John talks about how and why he chose the spot, what he looked for in a stand site, and how a deer ended up 8 yards from the base of his tree! This is definitely a spot he will be back to in the future.

In the second half of the show, John welcomes back returning guest Taylor Jones. Taylor is a man on a mission. So far that mission has included two great early season bucks, including a Kansas velvet buck. Taylor talks about how water played a big roll in his success this year because of the dry conditions, and how he has learned how important entry and exit routes are. Taylor and John also have a little bonus conversation about getting your significant other into hunting, and things to do or not do.

Pennsylvania is one of the few states that does not allow baiting or the use of hounds for hunting black bears.  With the extreme diversity in habitat across this state, harvesting one with a bow can be a difficult task.  However, with the season expansion and increase in bear population, archers taking the field in pursuit of these bruins have slightly better odds then they may have historically.  Regardless, scouting and developing a hunting strategy is still not a walk in the park!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Todd Bromley.  Todd is the editor of Crossbow Magazine and lifelong Pennsylvania hunter.  For the past 11 seasons, Todd has transitioned from compound to using solely his crossbow each fall.  We begin by diving into a bowhunting philosophy and ethics conversation, regardless of the weapon being vertical or horizontal.  Next we chat about Todd's recent fascination - black bears.  In 2015, Todd killed the 15th largest bear in the state at the time, and has since found himself scouting and hunting hard each fall.  He shares some tips for finding food in the types of habitat he typically hunts, and also finding sign in some out of the ordinary ways.  We also discuss a little bit of whitetail deer hunting strategy, specifically how he uses trail cameras to be successful.  We close by discussing some of the testing he has done with heavy crossbow bolts weighing in over 600 grains with 200 grain fixed blade broadheads.  Bear season begins October 15th, and this episode should fire you up!

Opening week of archery deer season has come and gone, even for folks with October 1st openers. As we drift into the middle of the month, we enter into what many have dubbed the “October lull.” Countless articles have been written that explain the October lull. The deer supposedly hole up in their beds from before first light until well after the end of legal shooting hours. Mature bucks shift to completely nocturnal patterns. The only hope we have is the sweet action of the pre-rut. Might as well stay home and watch football. Sounds about right?

The only problem with the October lull theory is that it simply isn’t supported by the evidence. GPS collar studies have consistently shown that buck activity increases as October rolls on. And there are lots of guys who are out tagging big bucks in high-pressured areas in the heart of October. So what are we to make of the October lull?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson of the Nine Finger Chronicles to get his unfiltered opinion on the October lull. Dan shares his thoughts on where the theory came from, what the average hunter should make of it, and what guys should do if they want to be on deer in the month of October. For many of us, being a butcher is not our full time job.  We might break down an animal 1,2,3 times during the year if we are lucky.  Each year we find ourselves making the decision of taking the animal to a processor or doing it in the garage ourselves.  This week the guys have the honor of talking with Nick Otto, the Huntavore, and discussing how to break down deer.  Nick’s passion for all things cutting, cooking, and culinary shows in discussion of the topics.  He goes through the basics of what you can do in the field to help set yourself up for success at the butcher.  The guys also cover the basics of breaking down an animal, specifically a whitetail deer, and how to get the most of your meat.

Paul is recovering from sinus surgery, but doing well!  Andrew’s quest to fill the freezer before the rut continues, and he’s on the board with number 2.  Of course nothing happens as expected, so the story of the “missed” doe, and the follow up/week later doe comes to an end.

A lot of news around the great state of Ohio.  Hocking Hills state lodge is open, state wide pheasant release is coming soon, new fishing regulations and more.  The state wide deer harvest as of 10/13/22 is 13,009, with 4739 being antlered deer, 8270 being antlerless, and Coshocton county has regained its reign as the king county at 535 deer. 

We would be remised if we didn’t discuss the moronic stories out of Ohio as well.  We dive into the walleye tournament scandal, and the Ohio hunting lease scandal as well.  We aren’t lawyers, just average spectators, but C’mon man!

PJ starts the conversation off with sharing his success story already from this season where he filled his DE on a velvet buck and how he has been able to find success there the last couple of years. Both share what food sources they key in on and what they do when that source dries up.

We are off and running this deer season! This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast we are joined by successful bowhunter Jesse Edwards who tagged a slammer of a buck on Opening day. This is one of those episodes that is both entertaining and educational. Jesse picked up a 50 acre property part way through the 2021 deer season, and quickly found that this little piece had a lot to offer. Jesse spent all off season prepping his lease for this particular buck, and all that hard work paid off on opening day of the 2022 archery season. Not only do Jesse and John relive the hunt, but also the months of work and preparation that went into a single hunt that ended with Jesse bagging the buck of a lifetime!

Rob's boy gets excited about bringing the meal to the table, and explaining the dish. Dad is training him for good service. Nick’s tribe of 3 are eager to help at the cutting table. Lots of proper knife skills being learned, and practiced.

This week on the Michigan Wild Podcast, Marcus is riding solo to recap his early season whitetail hunts. He talks about the property that he is hunting, how long he's been hunting it and what his first two sits have yielded. Marcus gives a brief history on his success on the property in previous years along with some moves he's made this year that he doesn't typically condone. The early season can be some of the best times to hunt during the year if you're lucky enough to still catch deer in some summer patterns, or it can just be the early stages of a long drawn out season. Either way, getting back into the woods is always a good thing and continuing to increase your knowledge of whitetail and their movements helps. There's a lot of season ahead, so keep grinding wherever you're at!

Welcome to Deer Camp!

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with the boss man himself, the man behind Sportsmen's Empire, Mr. Dan Johnson.  We converse over our current life routine including family life with children and slowly lead into hunting season.  Dan discusses the recent changes in hunting properties he is experiencing from losing one of his main properties and having to pull his gear off the land without getting shot at!  Dan talks about his pursuit in finding a shooter around his home in Iowa, but also shares his philosophy when it comes to out of state hunts.

In recent years there has been an excellent push to get people outdoors and enjoy deer hunting on public land.  However, there is still an overwhelming amount of "deer shaming", pressuring people that they have to shoot the absolute biggest buck, as if they are inferior if they do not.  Dan compares his philosophy of targeting mature bucks close to home versus shooting something on an out of state trip that just makes him happy.  How does a guy from Iowa relate to people in Pennsylvania and the Northeast?  Dan is an individual that does what he wants without the influence of what other people think.  Most importantly, he flat out loves bowhunting.  There is a ton of philosophy and a touch of strategy in this week's episode!

Hunting pressure. Studies have shown it very quickly changes the way whitetails behave and move across the landscape. It can lead to deer-less sits and frustrating hunting for the hunter who wants to use the same old access routes to hunt the same old stands. But for those who are willing to get creative and put in the work, hunting pressure from yourself and others can actually help your hunting, if you can understand and capitalize on how deer patterns change when the pressure heats up.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about adjusting to hunting pressure. Sometimes the adjustments one needs to make are major. Sometimes they’re more subtle. But one thing is sure, if you hunt the entire season with the same strategy and in the same locations you hunted on opening day, the odds of you having regular encounters with deer are very slim. Tune in to learn how Dan makes adjustments to stay on deer despite, and sometimes because of, hunting pressure.

On today's episode, Garrett talks about bowhunting in the month of October, which has become his favorite month overall to hunt in the Midwest. September can be nice because of the mild weather and of cover to help hide you in the tree. Bed to food patterns can be easy to identify, and deer can be less on edge. And of course November can also be incredible, though the second half of that month is usually the heaviest hunting pressure of the entire year with the various gun seasons, so often the best rut hunting is isolated, it can be very cold, and you can still put in long hours and slow days waiting for that one key flurry of activity. 

October seems to blend the best of both months. Dressing for the weather is very manageable. Deer movement can be average to very good, and it steadily improves over the course of the month. Deer movement is also much more predictable than November, both from a bedding perspective as well as year-over-year repeatability. The cover has been knocked down a bit since September which improves shooting lanes, but not so much so that the trees you're hunting out of are barren. Hunting pressure usually isn't too bad either. So in this episode Garrett covers eight tips to keep in mind to help making October hunting successful.

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan is once again joined by Josh Raley to discuss a hand full of hunting accessories that are often overlooked but are very important. Dan and Josh share their thoughts about hunting accessories like screw-in hooks, bow holders, and bow ropes. On this week's episode I was joined by NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams.  This is the second time Kips has been on the podcast and I always enjoy catching up with him. Kip is a PA resident and we chat about gearing up for this hunting season, especially right now. Kip has two kids and with my daughter Norah coming out with me this year I asked Kip how to help make hunting fun for kids. After that we dove into how 2022 forecasts and the struggles of 2021. From how deer communicate, finding bedding, using buck sign to cash in on a buck early in the season. The last piece Kip dived into is controlling your emotion in the heat of the moment and the practice to better your skills for that one opportunity.

If you listened to last week’s show, you know that knowing where the arrow hit the deer is important. This week Andrew sits down with Brett Morris of Blue River Bowhunting to discuss filming your hunts. Andrew’s always been to concerned with hauling more gear into the woods and really wanted to figure out how hard it could be to film a hunt. Brett gives the 101,201, and 301 level courses on how to capture your hunt. It can be as complicated or simple as you want it to be, but hear about some of his tips and tricks to record that hunt.

Special guests of the week David Brown and Gage Hall come on to discuss their inductions into the O2 Deer Camp. David killed an insanely cool looking whitetail buck on the east side of Ohio, while Gage got it done on his first ever compound kill in Northwest Ohio. Both stories bring to light the beauty of the hunt for these two Ohio Outdoorsmen. Congratulations gentlemen!

Paul has been traveling for work, and didn’t have much to report from the woods. Andrew’s head game continues, this week after missing a doe at 15 yards. This time the only thing injured was Andrew’s ego, so that’s a plus. The biggest highlight of the woods this week was being able to try out First Lite’s new transfer pack. This bag ROCKS! To kick off Org Month on the podcast, from the National Deer Association, Marcus welcomes in Nick Pinizzotto. Nick opens things up by giving a bit about his background and what brought him to NDA. The guys talk about similar hunting traditions in PA and MI, along with what makes the whitetail deer so special. Nick breaks down some of the different programs NDA has to offer for getting new deer hunters in the woods and his favorite part about those events. The two also spend a small amount of time on the merger between QDMA and the Deer Alliance. Wisconsin's archery deer season has been in for a couple of weeks now. Hunting is getting tougher as deer begin to shift to different food sources as well shift to thicker, more remote cover due to hunting pressure. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh and Pierce recount their hunts so far this season, including their most recent hunt together at Pierce's place. The 2022 Oklahoma hunting season is underway! To celebrate, we have a very special guest this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Director J.D. Strong joins John to talk about all things big game. Right out of the gate the two tackle one of the big issues creeping up on Oklahoma and surrounding states, chronic wasting disease aka CWD. JD outlines what the state is doing to combat a potential spread of the disease, and also talks about some best practices for people to implement to help keep our deer herd safe.

After the CWD talk, the conversation takes a much more light hearted turn. The guys talk about the state's two elk herds and how the state tries to manage them on both private and public land. Black bears are also a topic of conversation and JD discusses the growth of Oklahomas population and why the state manages the hunting seasons the way that they do.

You can't talk about Oklahoma big game without spending some time on white tail deer. John asks the controversial "one buck vs two buck" question and JD offers some very insightful responses. JD also talks about the states mule deer population and how it can be challenging to manage such a small and varying herd on the edge of its natural range.

There's really no good description to describe this episode. Let's just say that the first 40 minutes are fun but useless. Then, the last 20 minutest the guys discuss hunting in the first 3 weeks of October and the strategy that accompany this time of year. Topics in this episode include Tony and Dan's first cars, the last time they got angry, early season cold fronts, the weight of trail camera data, and the stupid ass moon phase. On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with Josh Raley in a full blown hunting gear B.S. Session. The guys talk about self filming cameras like Tactacam, they discuss their thoughts and opinions on e-bikes, and then Dan ask Josh about different products that he can use both while hunting in the south as well in the northern states like Wisconsin. Just another great BS Session amongst serious hunters.

Pennsylvania began allowing hunters to recover wounded big game with dogs during the 2018 season.  While we always aspire to place shots that require short track jobs, it's only part of hunting to make a bad shot.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we sit down with bowhunter and blood tracker Otto Shick.  Otto is a humble farmer from Southeast Pennsylvania that has been bowhunting his entire life and helping people find their deer with his dog Otis since it has been legal.  With all this comes a substantial amount of knowledge regarding tracking and what to do after the shot.

Patience is an attribute that seldom goes unrewarded.  So why is it so difficult for many people to be patient after they release an arrow?  Frankly, it's easier said than done when you're dealing with adrenaline and excitement.  Without discipline, it can quickly ruin your recovery experience.  Slow down and ask yourself things such as, where do I think I hit?  How did the deer react? Where was the last place I saw it run?  What time did I shoot?  Otto shares with us what to do on specific shot situations, the amount of time to wait before tracking, how to mark the trail as you go, and what to do when you lose blood and decide to call someone with a dog.  When in doubt, back out, they say.  Not only is this true for allowing enough time for the animal to expire, it's also true for dog tracking.  Grid searching can hinder a dog's ability to follow up efficiently by molesting the track's scent profile.  If you need help with a track this fall or would like more information about blood tracking with dogs, go to www.unitedbloodtrackers.org.

This podcast Dave and Andy tell the epic story of their successfulelk hunt. A DIY bull is something special and Dave and Andy had a rough go for a few days but were able to connect late in the trip. They go over the gear they used on this DIY elk trip and some of the blown opportunities as well.

Over the last couple of years, hunting public land whitetails has become cool again. Thanks to the success of many YouTubers, hunters are taking to public land in huge numbers. While more hunters enjoying our public lands is a good thing, the increased pressure can make hunting public land a challenge. Despite the increase of pressure, however, lots of folks are still finding consistent success. What's their secret?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Michael Perry about his tactics for taking big bucks on public land. It took a while for Michael to find success on above average bucks on public land, but over the last several years he's been one of the most consistent public land hunters out there. Just last year, he shot what is now the Alabama state record muzzleloader buck, scoring nearly 196"! During the offseason, Michael wrote a book entitled, Deer Hunting Secrets to Taking Mature Bucks on Public Lands, which is full of deer hunting stories and many of Michael's hunting tactics. This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we're talking about how to increase your chances for having early season buck encounters. We've heard plenty of guests, like Warren Womack, talk about finding hot feed trees. While that's still important for finding deer in general, it doesn't always result in finding bucks. What we've found is the hot feed tree that is secluded in a thick area can often be the first available food source inside a buck's core area. How do you know if it is? RUBS, that's how. 

In this episode, Parker is sharing an encounter with a buck in Tennessee from this week. How he found the spot and what the buck ended up doing is a scenario that we've seen play out time and time again during early season. Even going so far as to say that statistically in this scenario, having an encounter with the buck laying down the sign might be as high as 50-60%. 

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Evan Trebilcock about his passion for the outdoors and exploring new opportunities.

Since he was just learning to walk, Evan was exposed to the great outdoors. Hailing from rural, upstate New York, his family has always taken advantage of the opportunity to harvest game from the land. From archery whitetail to chasing river walleyes, Evan is always outside pursuing something to take home for dinner.

His upbringing left Evan wanting to share the wonders of wild lands with other curious people. This led him to start a nonprofit mentorship organization with a close friend called Opportunity Outdoors. From indoctrinating first time deer hunters, to teaching himself to archery hunt for bull elk in the Rocky Mountains, Evan lives to push boundaries in the outdoors and bring others along for the ride.

With October just around the corner, many of us are excited to get in the treestand and start the process of locating big bucks. On this episode fo the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks about his October bowhunting strategy. He explains that he plans to hunt just for a couple of days in early October in order to get some climbing sticks up in some of the best locations on the new farm that he gained access to this summer. While he is there, he plans on checking his trail cameras in hopes of getting an idea of the caliber of deer that are running around on that farm.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick recalls his adventure for archery elk with his hunting buddy, Brock Dean. Together they tell their reactions to a week of super highs and deep woes; close enounters, and hellacious climbs, and what helped them to have really good success as greenhorn western elk hunters. Not a lot of animals died, but a couple get real close, on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick is joined by good friend, Brock Dean. Brock, AKA: The Former PLW, public land warrior. Brock and Nick along with two other buds, headed to Montana. They took their chance on a DIY archery hunt with General Elk tags. The week-long hint started with a 24 hour straight through drive. After hitting their campsite and prepping their gear, the 4 some made their first novice move and climbed straight up a face of the mountain without really understanding what their objective was. To their surprise they did happen to hear elk bugles, which gave them some confidence, and started their plan for the next day. Nick and Brock both agreed that our heads were in the right place, while maybe our bodies were not. Very positive going in, knew that the “slog” was worth the effort, continual planning and making audibles kept putting the guys in spots to catch elk. In fact, the group finding a closed ATV trail helped in getting up the mountain and to areas that otherwise would be out of their reach. While even the trail was in bad shape, it was better than thick timber and no switchbacks.

The group also found themselves at the top of bowl with little to no access, other than from the top. This became a sweet spot and location of several very close encounters. One being a huge bull in the timber, another being a spike bull feet from Nick, and finally the dramatic tale of Brock taking an uphill shot on a nice bull that ultimately ended unsuccessful. Overall with what they had accomplished, the adventure of it all, lessons learned, and how close they were to animals, they deemed this a successful trip. Let’s just call it, unfinished business.

This week on The Average Conservationist Podcast, Marcus is riding solo to give the listeners a bit of a reset before kicking off 'Org Month' in October. Marcus talks about what's to come during org month along with some of the guests that he'll be having on. With that, he also gets into a few different proposed bills that are out there, both good and bad for the conservation world and how you can help voice your opinions. The hope is that this episode will get you to start thinking about conservation from more of a policy side of things and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and get involved.

This week Paul and Andrew take time to recap their opening weekend adventures.  Paul spent some time with his son on public land.  Paul had his first official hunt in the saddle, figured out some of the intricacies of the mobile hunter.  No deer down for Paul, but he’s headed in the right direction.

Andrew’s weekend started off slow, but really picked up speed late Saturday afternoon.  Hunting an earn a buck property, he had multiple run ins with antlerless deer.  One deer is in the freezer, although not the largest deer, it qualifies for helping the deer management program, and the door is open for hunting for antlers on that property.  Andrew also discusses his hardship of losing a deer in the field as well.  Not an easy discussion, but it is a potential result when you hunt.

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Steve Sherk from Sherks Guide Service.  Steve resides in Western PA where he hunts the big woods of PA.  The last time Steve was on the podcast we had a ton of topics regarding buck hunting tactics.  Well round two is finally here after a year.  Steve wrapped up a two year trail cam data study which he shared on the Exodus Podcast with our friends Chad and Cam.  We get Steve to share hunting strategies for specific weeks, finding bucks after the shift and so much more!   We wrap up the conversation with Steve answering a few listener questions.  Thanks to Steve for coming on again and sharing a ton of great content!!

To start things off in the podcast Steve shares what to focus on coming into the early season and how bedding plays a major role in this.  Follow this up by chatting about shifting cameras, and when he doesn’t shift cameras because he doesn’t want to disturb specific buck areas.  A question came up about not only how Steve tracks buck shifting areas, but does as well and his philosophy on shooting a doe early or not.  Then Steve shares his strategy regarding the three C’s (Cover, Cold Fronts & Cameras).  It was awesome to hear some techniques and stories regarding the three C’s.  Then the meat and potatoes of the podcast Steve breaks down how he would hunt each time frame of the big woods and ties in his trail cam data study for this period.  So much great info in this episode and Part 2 of Buck School with Steve as a freaking blast! In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with his good buddy Ryan Denu about his father’s recent bear hunt in northern Wisconsin. Ryan is an avid outdoorsman who’s been hunting since he was a kid. While Ryan’s primary targets are deer and pheasants, bear hunting has held a special place in his heart since he first had the opportunity to experience it several years ago. Ryan accompanied his father on what will likely be his father’s only Wisconsin bear hunt due to the time it takes to acquire a coveted zone A tag. Ryan’s dad didn’t want it easy, and he got exactly what he was looking for on his hunt! He hunted for several days only to find out he and his hunting party had likely been tracking an infamous bear named Nike. Nike had a reputation for refusing to tree, standing his ground, and harming dogs. While Nike never treed, Ryan’s father was finally able to get a clean shot with the help of the hounds. This hunt is one he and Ryan will never forget, and makes for a story you won’t want to miss!
