Nate does a solo episode on Michigan Wild this week to recap his last 7 days of bowhunting. Once again this week was filled with its share of drama. Lightning struck twice, 5 days apart, on another mature buck Jake. Nate's son Henry named this deer this summer and is a deer Nate had history with last fall. By October 10th Nate had sent 2 arrows at target bucks and didn't seal the deal. To hear the story of Jake and how the story didn't have a storybook ending once again this week give it a listen.

Using Historical Data to Hone in on Big Bucks with Brandon Barlow

Big Game
Bowhunting

Public Land

Ever feel like you're just behind the action? Like you're always just a few days behind, hunting last weekend's sign when the deer seem to have moved on? Or maybe you've fallen into the trap of following trail camera photos from this year and you're often too late to the party? Situations like these are why many hunters are beginning to rely more and more on historical data. Using historical data to tracks certain bucks' seasonal patterns or when certain areas seem to switch on every season has garnered a good bit of attention in the last few years. And there's one good reason for this: it works! But it only works if you gather, analyze, and track the right data in the right way and then ACT when the time is right.

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with Brandon Barlow about using historical data to hone in on big bucks! Brandon has lots of experience tracking specific bucks and specific areas and has been able to consistently capitalize on his intel when the time is right. In fact this season, he nearly called his shot and was able to take a public land stud in September.

In this episode, the guys discuss Brandon's overall approach to historical data, how he uses both SD and cell cameras, how mock scrapes play into his strategy, and how he times his hunts to make sure he's there when the buck he's after finally shows. This is a FANTASTIC episode for anyone looking to take their hunting strartegy to the next level. Enjoy!

Famous Firearm Flops

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re talking famous firearm flops! Guns that had huge potential to change the industry, but just could never gain the steam. We start off with the Colt Model 1855 Revolving Rifle, which was a super interesting concept, but design flaws kept it from really taking off. One of the biggest problems was cased ammunition not being invented yet, as well as manufacturing issues straight from the factory. Now, remade with a modern take in the Heritage Rancher Carbine, these guns have gained some popularity and there’s still one common problem, no one knows how to hold them when shooting!

Next up, we delve into the 1960s, The Great Space Race! Astronauts, rockets, and Gyrojet Rocket Pistols! A rocket fuel powered firearm that was extremely complex and awesome, but just too early for its time. Arguably one of the best names for a handgun ever, it was hammer fired, but the hammer was in front of the cartridge that then drove it into the firing pin. The downside is that you didn’t get your maximum velocity until the bullet was downrange.

The Remington Model R51 had an absolute fantastic lead up to its launch, tons of good content and marketing hype that really made this gun a must have, but there was a downside? The gun was subpar at best. Different from the original R51, it was unfortunately a complete flop for Remington, who swiftly buried any evidence of its existence under the rug. A great conversation piece in firearm history, however, they can be picked up for a fantastic deal on GunBroker.com.

Closing out, we talk about the Heckler & Koch G11. Caseless ammunition has stumped manufacturers for years and with the H&K G11, it was no exception. Ahead of its time, with a large failure to launch these guns are extremely hard to find, however other caseless ammunition does sometimes pop up on GunBroker.com. Still to this day the caseless ammunition has not been figured out or mastered, hopefully one day in the future! Allen goes over some of the examples of these guns and ammunition you can find today on GunBroker.com.

The October Lull: Fact or Fiction?

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

Opening day is in the rear view and for many, early season aspirations have turned to broken dreams. Now the deer movement seems to have dried up in all of our tried and true spots. What happened? Is this the (cue the ominous music) OCTOBER LULL?! Well, yes and no. Studies Show that deer movement increases throughout the month of October with no decrease. But the experience of many hunters is that deer sightings by mid October have slowed to a trickle. What's going on here?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn, Jake Hendrickson, and Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about the dreaded (or nonexistent) October Lull. The guys talk about what goes into hunters' perception of a lull in deer movement and how they would adjust to target a mature buck during the middle of October.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch sits down with Aaron Hepler for a whitetail hunting B.S. session.  Aaron is a diehard bowhunter and family man.  He spends countless hours in the offseason scouting and running cameras on public land in the big woods.  Camera data is excellent, but it becomes easy to rely on obtaining a picture first before having the confidence to hunt a spot.  Instead of reacting to a camera after a picture is taken, Aaron talks about being proactive using annual trail camera data.  This means taking historical information from cameras and hunter observation and hunting that specific window of time when things are heating up.  All that and much more.  Be ahead of the deer and don't be chasing!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 194 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and good friend of mine, Chris Weist!  Over the last couple of years Chris has really dialed in his hunting strategies that has led to more encounters and more success.  Chris for example was successful last year killing 4 bucks in 3 different states all with different tactics! As hunters, we try our best to put in the work to scout and make up the best gameplan we can to find success.  Well, sit back and enjoy this episode as Chris shares tactics, stories and scenarios that will help you this season!

We begin this episode by hearing Chris share the importance of post season scouting that helps guide his decisions for the upcoming season.  He uses his time scouting to get an understanding of the woods and how the deer in that area specifically use the terrain.  Chris keeps tabs on the data he collects during the post season and during the season, especially when it comes to trail cameras.  This allows him to map out where and when to hunt.  We discuss the critical component of access and plans for hunting specific spots this fall.  You will hear a ton of information when it comes to scrapes! Strategies, stories and scenarios will be shared that I hope a lot of you will be able to relate to and be able to implement this upcoming month! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

This episode of Michigan Wild is a recap of the last seven days of hunting. To kick off the first week Drew Hasler, once again joins Nate, and they both go over their week of hunting. Drew had a few high quality hunts even with the adversity he faced after opening night. He stayed strategic and ended up seeing a potential shooter and had a new target buck show up on cam this week.

Nate's week was very eventful and he had some great hunts. He saw 2 target bucks enter one of his food plots on a hang and hunt Thursday night. Nate dives into the hunt he had that evening and why he felt Thursday was the night. Unfortunately it ended with an epic fail... a swing and a miss.

Both Drew and Nate are looking forward to this upcoming week and are optimistic for getting on their target deer.

Situational Tactics for Pressured Early Season Bucks with Josh Honeycutt

For many, deer season has been in for a couple of weeks and that means one thing: the deer know they're being hunted. It doesn't take long for those bucks that were consistent all summer in our food plots or feeders to pattern us and shift their behavior. Combine this with fresh acorns on the ground and you've got a recipe for a hunting strategy disaster. Unless you adapt, that is.

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with outdoor writer Josh Honeycutt about adapting one's hunting strategy once the pressure is on and daylight sightings begin to dwindle. If there's one big takeaway from this episode, it's that all hunting strategy is situational. There is no silver bullet. But this episode will help you adapt to many of the situations you'll encounter this fall. Enjoy!

It's your state's archery opener. You make the long hike back to a secluded spot where you never run into people. You know there's a big buck in the area, and that you have a good chance of running into him if you play your cards right. As you ascend the tree, you all of a sudden hear someone yelling to you. Your heart sinks as you realize there's another hunter already setup 50 yards from your tree. What do you do ?

This, and many situations like it, happen all the time when hunting land that we don't control. The ability to adapt and overcome is essential for success on pressured land. But being adaptable is a skill that is honed, not one that necessarily comes easy. We talk about the history of the .357, how it was created, and how every other cartridge today is still measured up to it, especially in the law enforcement world. Smith & Wesson get a lot of their inspiration from ammunition partners who approach them with a cool new round looking for a firearm to match it, with the 30 Super Carry being a recent example of this.

Next up Mike shows us a Smith & Wesson Model 39. After a failed attempt with the Model 1913, Smith & Wesson pivoted and came out the gate strong with the Model 39. The Model 39 was the first 9mm pistol built in America. The Model 39 was the single stack variant with Smith & Wesson quickly producing a double stack variant in the Model 59. Although never officially adopted, the Model 39 does have some military history in a suppressed version dubbed “The Hushpuppy.” With a suppressor and a slide lock, it completely took the innovation of a double stack semi auto away turning it into a single shot but it was almost one of the quietest handguns ever made. While not as popular in the collecting world as revolvers from Smith & Wesson, Model 39’s have slowly started to build a collectible following with prices rising on the market on GunBroker.com. Vince has noticed a trend in the “nostalgia bump” with many people requesting these style guns remanufactured in today’s market as new.

Closing out, we cover a really exciting topic for Smith & Wesson. After almost 160 years in Springfield, Massachusetts, Smith & Wesson has relocated to Maryville, TN. While an extremely tough decision, Smith & Wesson did their research to make sure the new location ticked all their boxes for just where exactly they wanted to be. With the grand opening party coming up this Saturday, October 7th, 2023, they sold out all their tickets in less than a day. Distribution, plastics, assembly, and front office are all moving to Maryville with some manufacturing processes remaining in Springfield, where there is generational talent at the revolver and 1911 level for Smith & Wesson. The maiden guns coming out of Maryville should start rolling off the line at the end of October. With over 600,000 square feet of state of the art space that is laid out for maximum efficiency, Smith & Wesson absolutely cannot wait to start their engines in their new space.

Cast Iron Myths with Kyle Seip

Big Game
Cooking

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick tries to get to the bottom of a few cast iron myths that have been circulating around the internet.  Smooth vs rough finish, expensive vs cheap, and folks still think using soap is ok.  Kyle puts these myths to bed along with a ton of info about our favorite cookware.  So preheat that skillet, and let the facts cook on this episode of Huntavore.

Kyle Seip has been around cast iron and metals most of his life.  Now he finds and restores vintage cast pieces both as a hobby and side business.  Kyle talks briefly about his process in using electrolysis on gunked up pans, and how a simple oven clean feature can help you start over on a damaged seasoning.  He Al breaks into several questions about cast iron and how in the long run, cast iron is far superior to any new modern material. The whole conversation is a great informative piece on care and use of your current and future cast iron pieces.

October is finally here! Many whitetail hunters have a love-hate relationship with October, especially the first few weeks of the month. With the frenzy of the rut still a few weeks off, if you haven't done your homework, mature buck sightings can be few and far between. And there are few guys out there who put in the work to get on bucks quite like Ryan Glitsky.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh & Pierce talk with Ryan Glitsky about Ryan's process for getting on BIG bucks. Ryan primarily hunts big woods mountain bucks in PA, and he does it at a very high level. This week, Josh and Pierce get to quiz Ryan on his approach on everything from in season scouting to trail cam strategy to when to stay put and when to make a move during the rut. This episode is FULL of good info that just might help you get on deer instead of simply watching squirrels. Enjoy!

Early Season Black Bear Scouting and Hunting

Big Game
Bear
Predator Hunting
Public Land
Strategy

Bear seasons are opening throughout parts of the Northeast; New York just finished an early bear season in parts of the state, New Jersey opens Oct. 9 and Pennsylvania on Oct. 14.  When food is in abundance, your chances are the greatest to run into bears.  But even with fall bear seasons and a multitude of food sources, your statistical chance of killing a bear in PA each year is less than 2%.  How do you begin to tackle such a feat with an animal in such low numbers relative to whitetail deer?

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch has New Jersey native Jay Lyon back on the podcast.  Jay is a diehard bear hunter that has been successful consistently throughout the northeast harvesting bear as a solo hunter using a multitude of tactics.  Jay talks about how important it is to cast a large net scouting and not be afraid to put miles on boot leather to find the key components of a good bear hunt.  It's simple (or so it seems), find food, find cover, find bears.  What's tricky is not missing out on the hottest food source on a day-to-day basis.  This means in season scouting and good knowledge of the land, thinking one step ahead on what food becomes available during the fall.  Hunt hard, and scout harder; you'll have a better chance then you realize!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 193 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Tony Peterson!  It is always a great time to catch up with Tony over an episode.  It is no secret that Tony is a BIG fan of hunting early season whitetail. There are many factors that come into play for Tony and we get into this discussion on what to key in on to have success during the early season timeframe!

We begin this episode by hearing Tony share some fun upcoming hunts he has in store with his daughters and some specific goals that he hopes they can achieve together this season.  Speaking of goals, Tony has a specific goal for himself and that is killing a buck in some cattail slews with the muzzleloader.  Life lessons about hunting get discussed, separating the stress of producing and just enjoying the hunt and more! When the season begins to wear you down and beat you up, Tony shares some things that can get yourself right again and off the struggle bus.  The main meat and potatoes is hunting early October and the rules to finding success NOW! In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we talk all about you guessed it..hunting season! We open up with Jacob highlighting just exactly where he was when bucks started showing up on his trail cameras..spoiler alert..he wasn’t in the stand! We talk about whether or not cows have an effect on which way the deer come into a spot or if they just don’t care at all. What do you guys think? For Jacob it seems that the does do not seem to mind but the bucks seem to only want to come from that direction when the cows aren’t there. Jacob brainstorms on if he should possibly hang a second setup or move depending on where the cows may be but as we all do during bow season he worries that if he moves they’ll come right underneath the other tree!

Next up Brayden dives into his recent trip taking a youth out for youth weekend. They headed out to a private farm that he’s done some scouting on and climbed in a blind in a primo spot. Setup next to a couple soybean fields but with unfavorable wind they hoped for the best. Listen in to see what kind of luck they had! Brayden loves taking youth out hunting and really believes it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do as an outdoorsman although he does have a few spots that are off limits for the newbies!

Derek talks about not shooting the first buck he sees in Kentucky, with only one buck tag he’d like to draw his season out. However, he has been kept pretty busy lately with waterfowl, bear, and whitetail in other states that may change for this season. He talks about his upcoming bear and deer hunt in Tennessee that he has been scouting for all summer long. He’s going to do a few local hunts first to work all the kinks out before he heads south to hunt.

Closing out the guys talk about the best way to get in and out of the woods. They go over the different ways they pack in and if they wear their saddle in or wait to put it on when they get to the tree. Long hikes coming up for Derek he’s trying to make his walk in as easy as possible. What ways do you guys get into the woods?

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Keith Hammer of Stratton Seed Company to talk about their wide variety of food plot blends and how to create successful food plots even in dry conditions. One of the things that drew John to Stratton Seed Company years ago, was that most of their seeds are grown and produced locally here in the south around Stuttgart, Arkansas. Their target customers range along the southeastern United States from Oklahoma and Texas across to Georgia and Alabama. The seeds and mixes they produce are designed for the soils and climates of the south, and not the typical midwestern whitetail hunters that so many products cater to.

Keith and John go through the lengthy product line that Stratton offers, but also dig a little deeper into specific food plot strategy. They talk about when folks in the south should plant as opposed to what most people in the midwest suggest, and Keith gives some tips for people trying to grow food plots in these drier than usual conditions Oklahoma and surrounding states have been experiencing. John also lets Keith talk about a subject that he has essentially no experience with due to his abundance of wild hogs, which is growing corn for deer. Over all, this is a great educational episode that you won't want to miss!

The OLDEST S&W Revolver In Existence & Smith & Wesson Founding

Firearms

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking with Mike Helms from Smith & Wesson about the history of the company and how it became the company it is today. We start out talking with Mike on the shadowy history of when Smith & Wesson was originally founded. A few different dates float around, but Mike gives us a good estimate on when he believes the company actually started.

Next up, Mike dives into the Smith & Wesson Model 1. We talk all about how it jump started the company into loads of success basically unheard of in the time period. Mike shows us an amazing example of an EARLY Model 1…you won’t even believe how low the serial number is on it!

We swap over to talk about early top-breaks by Smith & Wesson. Mike brought an awesome .38 single action example, that’s actually the first ever .38 caliber Smith & Wesson ever created. Nicknamed the Baby Russian because of its resemblance to the larger Model 3 Russian, the medium-framed S&W .38’s biggest difference to its big brother is a spur trigger compared to the traditional trigger on the Model 3. The Smith & Wesson .38 came equipped with an automatic extractor, with many arguing that this firearm is some of Smith & Wesson’s finest manufacturing ever.

After the top-breaks we get into hand-ejectors, which in layman’s terms is a regular revolver. Logan goes over an example of one in the Smith & Wesson Model 1896. This Model 1896 is unique because it doesn’t have a cylinder release button on the side, but instead has a pin you pull on the front of it. Mike goes into how the Model 1896 regressed in a sense, going from an automatic extractor to a hand-ejector. Logan and Allen talk about examples of the 1896 and other Smith & Wesson firearms that are listed on GunBroker.com and what you can expect to spend on examples of some of these.

Closing out, Mike shows us an example of a 2nd Issue Model 1, “The Fancy Gun." Not sure exactly where this example came from, it was shipped from the factory either to the mayor of Springfield, Emerson White, as a gift or if it was sold to Emerson White and he gave it to someone else as a gift. Mike also gives us a rundown of joining Smith & Wesson’s Collector Association and how they try to welcome everyone no matter what sort of collecting you’re into!

Elevating Conversations Around Hunting Culture and Conservation

Big Game
Bowhunting
Conservation
Whitetail
Bird

As an outdoorsman, why do you do what you do? Why do you care about the things you care about? Better yet, why should anyone else care about what you care about? Is the outdoor lifestyle, and all its accoutrements, one that's worth preserving, promoting, and even passing on? These questions, at their core, are worth wrestling with, and they inform the conversation on this week's episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh & Pierce talk with Robert Rosenberger about the intersection between mentorship, hunting, and conservation. Robert, with decades of experience engrossed in Wisconsin's outdoor culture, is a wealth of knowledge, wisdom gained by experience, and to top it all off, he's a salt of the earth kind of guy. This is very likely the richest and most profound episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman so far. We hope you enjoy!

Brandon Travis joins Michigan Wild this week with Nate for a great episode. Brandon just got back from a successful bear hunt in the UP. He was able to get an awesome black bear with his bow, all DIY.

Brandon is also a die hard bowhunter and has the opportunity to chase whitetails all fall. Like Nate, Brandon hunts public, private and out of state through the fall. Throughout the episode the guys talk about their mindset depending on where they are hunting, time of year, and past history.

Brandon has been filming and editing for Vital Shot Productions for many years. You can find some of his hunts and many others on Youtube, a few local channels in MI, and the Pursuit Channel.
