Wisconsin Walleye Tactics with Bryce Becker

Fishing
Strategy

Although the calendar may not reflect Spring being close, the forecast certainly does and for many anglers that means one thing:  Walleyes! This week, Pierce sits down with Southeastern Wisconsin native, and avid walleye angler, Bryce Becker to talk about everything you need to know to target these famously finicky fish!

Bryce grew up in Waukesha County and has been targeting walleye with his grandfather for about as long as he can remember. Throughout that time, he honed and perfected his tactics to consistently catch these low-light "gravel snakes" everywhere from his local rivers in the southern part of the state, clear on up to the famous lakes of the Northwoods. In this episode, Bryce breaks down how walleyes see, when they are most active, what they feed on, the best habitat and conditions for targeting these fish, and so much more! Whether you're a lifelong walleye angler like Bryce or a total walleye novice like Pierce, you're going to learn something in this episode to help get you on fish this spring!

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John takes some time to cover a wide variety of topics that have been on his mind. First up are a few exciting events coming up that any outdoor enthusiast should be attending. After that, John digs into the 2023-24 deer harvest numbers published by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservations, and a new thought he has on why this deer season seemed a little odd. John also discusses some turkey harvest numbers and why he is optimistic about this upcoming spring season.

After nerding out on some numbers, John goes over a recent news article he came across about how wild hogs may be good for the environment. While hogs have their place, John is afraid this particular article had a hidden agenda in its midst. To round things off John touches on a few other topics like using forestry mulchers on hunting properties, preference points, and planning ahead for this upcoming hunting season.

The Local Legend or the World's Worst Bowhunter Adam Miller joined Michigan Wild this week. Adam and Nate had a great conversation going over Adam's season, some mobile hunting gear, how the World's Worst Bowhunter came to be and why he insists on hunting with his trad bow for Michigan's gun opener.

Adam did end up finding success this season in Kansas and in typical fashion for Adam it was a rodeo and got a little western. Since Adam is very involved in mobile hunting gear, Nate took the opportunity to ask him for some insight on some products. It's a great time to be in the market for gear because there are a plethora of options out there. Overall a great episode with lots of laughs and funny stories and some flat out bad luck.

Thanks Adam for joining Michigan Wild. Go follow Bowhunter Chronicles to learn more and give his podcast a listen. It's filled with awesome guests and tons of real world experiences.

The Gunfather

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by Louie Tuminaro, aka The Gunfather. Starting out Logan dives into the background of Louie’s restoration business, which you can see in episodes of the Outdoor Channel series, The Gunfather. Starting out on his show, Louie did a ton of Colt restorations, enough to the point that it caught the attention of Colt which has led them to being an Authorized Colt Service and Restoration Center! Louie gives us a rundown of what exactly they do under “restoration,” his biggest priority is doing the right service for people even if that means turning down a restoration on a beautiful firearm because it would be better suited left in the condition sent to him. Make sure to listen in to this episode Presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about Louie and The Gunfather: Restorations!

Next up, Louie dives into the process of restoring a gun to right-off-the-line, brand new condition! He covers the entire process from sanding in the right direction, to sourcing the parts that takes the firearm back to day one condition. We have a discussion on where he sources parts, why he sources the original parts, and how much of a difference it makes doing a complete date period restoration. We discuss the values of firearms such as the Colt 1911 in different states, including modified and completely restored. You may be surprised at just how much the values vary depending on what state the firearm is in at the time. Louie nails the values directly on the head with how they differ from one to the other.

Closing out, we discuss using laser engraving during restoration. Logan cringed a bit when he first saw a laser engraver going on a firearm restoration, however Louie discusses how his business uses them versus using roll marks to restore the firearm. Louie emphasizes how he and his business really pour their all into the restorations they do, with the customer’s happiness being the absolute end goal. This is not an episode you’re going to want to miss!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by PA hunter Howie Miller.  Howie works his tail off in and out of the field to make the most of his time in the woods.  Howie reflects on the 2023 grind of a season where he played cat and mouse with a dandy buck throughout the fall.  Howie lives in the southern half of the state, but chooses to hunt as much as possible around his camp in the northern portion of PA.  This creates challenges when hunting deer that are not resident to your living quarters.

Howie wrapped his tag around a stud buck during the first week of the Pennsylvania rifle season.  Thrilled to no end, we reflect on the story, successes, and lessons learned throughout a satisfying fall.  Lastly, we discuss a new journey which began late last summer; managing a newly purchased property.  Howie has as much enjoyment working in his own dirt as he does scouting public land.  We discuss the new challenges and goals he has moving forward into the next season.  Thanks for tuning in!

Listeners gain valuable tips on how deer adapt to pressure, often seeking refuge in unexpected areas, showcasing the adaptability of these elusive creatures.

The episode delves into advanced hunting strategies, exploring topics like thermal hubs and buck bedding, with a special focus on the growing trend of thermal hubs in recent years. Greg sheds light on the significance of late October setups and how a well-informed approach to scouting during this period can significantly boost hunting success.

Greg emphasizes the importance of prioritizing principles over tactics, explaining how applying fundamental principles to individual situations yields superior results. The conversation also takes a philosophical turn as Greg encourages hunters to savor the experience, emphasizing the limited opportunities one has in the pursuit of their passion.

This episode is not just a guide to improving hunting skills but also an exploration of the joy and fulfillment found in the pursuit of whitetails, with valuable insights from a seasoned habitat consultant and realtor.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan interviews upstate New York resident Justin Taylor about the difference between hunting ag ground and big woods deer. Justin explains that hunting big woods bucks is not easy and takes a certain skill set to get within shooting range of a big buck. In northern New York, Justin tells us that 130 class buck is a big deal. Back in the late 1800's homesteaders planted apple trees near their homes, now, when scouting for places to hunt, Justin looks for these old homesteads and the apple trees that remain. The guys also break down big woods deer behavior, how they move through the terrain, and of course food sources.

In the BS portion of this episode, the guys share their thoughts abut the direction we are going with hunting, and how hunting is becoming a pay to play activity. Greed for big horns, and more acres per hunter resulting in over populated public, are causing many of us to struggle finding access for our hunting future. Enjoy and share!

Movie Firearms with Larry Zanoff

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by Larry Zanoff from Independent Studio Services to talk all about movie firearms! Opening up, Larry gives us a history of Independent Studio Services, which is the largest prop house in North America, and most likely in the world, with that also including the largest armory of firearms. One of the largest industries for them has moved towards video games, ISS provides scans of firearms and also the sounds for each firearm. While firearms are a huge portion of ISS, they are indeed a full-service prop house that reaches worldwide. Make sure to tune in to this episode presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about Independent Studio Services and what services they provide to the media industry!

Next up, Logan asks about recent movies or work that ISS firearms were showcased in. Larry gives a run down on some of the TV shows and movies that ISS has provided firearms for, including huge titles like the Marvel Universe! During a typical year, ISS will provide 75 -80% of the firearms for the media industry. Dan asks how it works if a firearm or firearm accessory is banned in a country and needs to be used for filming in the country. In that case they will use rubber and replica firearms to get the shots needed. Larry also tells us his history of how he became an armorer for Independent Studio Services and got involved doing what he does now.

Closing out we talk about how armorers interact with actors on the set of films. The armorer is always there during the scenes and is supposed to be the first person on set after cut has been called to remove the firearm from the actor. Larry talks about how important it is to build an early rapport with the actors so that everything flows smoothly on set. Logan also asks what the most difficult firearm to convert to fire blanks would be. Larry tells us the most difficult ones to make fire blanks are long recoil firearms. Larry’s goal is to try to keep the gun as close to real as possible so that on screen it all looks seamless. Be sure to listen in to this episode to hear all about movie firearms and Independent Studio Services involvement in the industry!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes), discusses a hat giveaway this week from Whitetail Company. If you want to get in on the giveaway, please email me jon@whitetaillandscapes.com. This week Greg Berndtson (Berndtson Timber Management) and Jon talk forestry, logging, and deer. Greg is a forester and logger, and provides his background and management tactics that are intended to evolve properties as we know it. Greg explains the equipment he uses afield to manage his jobs to ensure he can perform and work is done efficiently.

Jon discusses ecological restoration, low grade timber and goal setting. Greg explains how to approach valuing timber and future potential. Greg explains what is good versus bad timber and what tree species we may want to keep or get rid of your property. Greg talks about diversity and what species in his region are considered low grade and explains the market option for low grade. Greg talks about steering the forest in a healthy direction and what you can do as a landowner.

Greg explains the human dynamic of property management, evaluating a property and why our forests need good work to ensure that commercial harvest creates better quality down the road. Greg explains the step-by-step process to changing the forest, and how he approaches the understory and overstory of our woodlots to improve areas for silviculture purposes. Greg mentions the legacy impacts of deer browse and harm it creates to better quality habitat that most are trying to develop.

Greg and Jon discuss forest health and looking at individual trees to determine what trees we want to keep on the landscape. Greg provides a formula on general and specific tree species to consider when making decisions to cut or leave. Greg explains the volume (in tonnage) that he would consider reasonable for considering a low-grade timber job. Greg the benefits of his business for clients and what doing good forestry means to him. Greg and Jon end with discussions around building a better property around an equation of smart timber management, resulting in better deer and deer habitat.

Today’s show opens up with Brad talking about an interesting topic he read about before hopping on the podcast today. The topic is about merchant codes, and how states like California and New York are potentially looking at tracking them for firearm retailers so they can track that you bought a firearm. The problem with this is with retailers like Bass Pro, it would be almost impossible to track whether you bought a firearm or an item like a boat when using merchant codes, so it would be an incredibly hard thing to do. Make sure to tune in to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear our conversation about it and let us know what your opinion on it would be!

Next up Jacob talks about his recent weekend out trail racing. It was a super cool experience with this trail running event allowing people to bring their dogs with them, he did a seven mile run and finished with a little gas left so he definitely wants to tackle a longer run next time! Arica spent some time outdoors with her son and found a really nice spot to fish in! We also discuss the upcoming turkey season and everyone’s plans to hopefully get after one. Closing out Dan talks about his new bow for this upcoming season and his planned weekend to watch the total solar eclipse coming up soon!

If the term "hard work pays off" was ever to describe an individual, it might just be talking about Bryson Ziegler. Bryson joins the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week to talk about his awesome 2023 season which saw two great mature bucks hit the ground. The first buck Bryson took broke all the rules of big buck hunting. He killed the 7.5 year old on a morning hunt in the middle of the "October lull". If that isn't impressive enough, Bryson then took an even larger buck on a small permission property. He didn't just fool this buck once. After missing the buck with his fathers recurve, he put in the work to relocate the bruiser and again got him within bow range and made it count.

Ahhh... Shed season is upon us!!!! Wait, are you really that excited for shed season? A quick glance at social media would suggest that if you aren't shed hunting, you're REALLY missing out. But for those of us without primo ground and a boatload of late season food, a shed hunt often produces little more than a walk in the woods and sore feet. It's likely that for MOST deer hunters, you'd be better off using this time for other activities that may actually help your hunting next fall because, in all honesty, shed hunting kinda sucks...

Leupold & John Snodgrass

Gear

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by John Snodgrass from Leupold and Kyle Lamb with Viking Tactics. We start out with Logan asking about how the tactical and hunting world are tied together now? John dives into the fact that the Leupold Mark 4 is designed to be able to jump out of a plane with or grab out of a Humvee and still be dialed in, so naturally that transitioned into hunters being interested in some of the same technology. We discuss the difference in Mil dot from the Army and Marines, the biggest difference? The Marine’s version had to be crayon friendly! The good thing is everything now is completely the same, that way everything is user friendly across the board. Listen in to this episode Presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about Leupold’s involvement in the Mil dot system and the military throughout the years.

Next up, we dive into long range shooting and how it’s changed over the years. While the firearms themselves have not changed that much over the years, optics absolutely have. Nowadays long range shots in the 600-yard range that used to be highly celebrated and among the more elite few is really a standard shot for a lot of people who practice long range now. A huge improvement now is locking zero dials on scopes. A huge problem throughout history would be trying to dial back after dialing for a further range shot. Logan discusses with Kyle the optics and weapons from the Battle of Mogadishu and his history with different optics during his time serving in the armed forces. Kyle gives us a history on the optics he used throughout his lifetime and some of the pros and cons of the different optics he used during those time periods.

Closing out, John gives us an in depth background of Leupold’s history. All the way back to the very beginning with creating surveying equipment, the founder of Leupold ended up getting into the scope business during 1947 after he himself fell victim of a fogged scope during a hunt, which led to him saying he could create a better scope himself! Make sure to tune into this episode to hear all about Leupold.

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by Donald Trump Jr. and Mike Schoby of Field Ethos and Brett Vorhees from Taurus. We open up with Brett Vorhees talking about getting bit by the African Safari hunting bug. Logan asks the group what’s the best advice for someone's first time safari hunt. The group consensus was to not take a checklist with you for what game you want to chase. The reasoning behind this is because when you get there you may be surprised at some of the game you would like to go after! Make sure to listen in to this episode Presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about African Safari hunting! Next up, Logan asks Brett what exciting items Taurus has coming to the hunting world. Brett’s first thought was the Taurus Expedition rifle, which is a new Taurus bolt action hunting rifle. He also talks about their Raging Hunter revolver which goes all the way up to a .500 Magnum! Mike Schoby brags about the quality production at Taurus and how their state of the art facility was a surprise for him when he first visited! Trump Jr. tells all about how Brett Vorhees is an actual gun guy. There’s a ton of firearm company CEO’s who aren’t gun enthusiasts, or hunting enthusiasts, so it was a breath of fresh air when Brett gave Field Ethos the green light to give a no holds barred review of Taurus. Logan asks about Field Ethos Magazine and how it got started. Donald Trump Jr. said that Field Ethos was born out of a need to break the mold of outdoor media. With a lack of real conversations being had about hunting, they saw a void that needed to be filled. Mike Schoby says that one of the best things about Field Ethos is their honesty, even some companies that are paying Field Ethos as part of their partnership. Mike believes that it’s one of the most important parts of what makes Field Ethos stand out in today’s world of outdoor media. Closing out, Logan asks a tough question – if you could own one gun, what gun would it be? With an almost impossible question to answer for the crew, he then delves into what firearms everyone learned to shoot. The crew talks about their favorite guns, grail guns, and guns that they would love to get their hands on if they could. Tune in to the full episode to hear all about it! Discussing Wisconsin's Proposed Doe Harvest Ban With Paul Annear

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Public Land

It's no secret that Wisconsin has a rich history of deer hunting. Images of flannel and orange clad hunters standing around a buck pole with thick northern forest in the background still come to mind when anyone says they're headed to deer camp. Unfortunately, that image is becoming less and less of a reality in recent years as the North woods of Wisconsin simply aren't what they once were for deer hunting. So much, in fact, that the state legislation has recently proposed to prohibit the harvest of does in the Northern Forest Region.

This probably isn't the first time you've heard about this since the bill was proposed, but you probably don't have all the information about it either. If that's the case, you're in the right place as this week, Pierce sits down with outdoor writer and author, Paul Annear to discuss the complexities of deer management in Wisconsin and the context surrounding this recently proposed bill.  Paul has been writing for publications like Legendary Whitetails, Midwest Whitetail, Deer & Deer Hunting, and countless others since 2014, and is one of the most well-rounded and knowledgeable voices in the Whitetail space. The guys cover what things led to so much decline in the northern deer herd, the constraints the DNR must operate within due to the state's political landscape, opposite struggles in the Southern half of the state, and much more.

If one thing is certain, it's that Wisconsin is an unbelievably unique and difficult state to manage deer in, and the betterment of deer management rests on the shoulders of outdoorsmen and women making their voices heard to provide input on best practices. Go follow along with Paul's awesome writing @pannear on Instagram or by searching "Paul Annear" to find more of his articles!

Jon explains how to manage bedding areas and how to influence interest by deer, comfort, and wind manipulation. Jared Vanhees with Habitat Podcast joined Nate this week on Michigan Wild. Jared is also one of the owners of Vitalize seed. Nate used vitalize seed in 3 separate plots this fall and overall has been thoroughly impressed with it. Having Jared on to talk about vitalize and shine some light on the company was something Nate had been looking forward to this off season.

Jared started the Habitat Podcast 6 years ago and has worked hard at helping fellow hunters become better land managers. Jared also offers land consulting and has had the opportunity to walk multiple properties in Michigan, giving him the ability to see where property is lacking. Cover, cover, cover!

The conversation does pivot to the overall health of the whitetail deer herd in Michigan. Especially with the doe problem Michigan faces. They each share some of their opinions on change and the start up of the DMI (Deer Management Initiative).

Overall both guys are concerned with the direction herd management is going and do not want the opportunity to be taken away from hunters.

Thanks Jared for hopping on and continuing to educate hunters so it can benefit a resource we all enjoy!

Sandhill Crane Hunting

Strategy

We hit something a little different this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, sandhill crane hunting! John's good buddy Charles just returned from a bucket list hunt and one that John was quite jealous of. Sandhill cranes are present in large numbers in western Oklahoma and Texas, and as Charles will discuss in this episode, make for a fun and engaging hunt. The "ribeye of the sky" are not as easy as you might think to hunt, and possess a keen eye for anything out of the ordinary.

Charles and his buddies were able to hunt cranes and geese on this trip, which makes for a great comparison of the two species and helps people relate to something they may be a little more familiar with. Charles talks about the strategy they used, the decoy set ups, the size shells, and the hides the group used to put a 14 man limit on the ground one day, and a stack of geese the next. If a crane hunt isn't already on your list, it definitely will be after this episode!

On this episode of Huntavore, Jeff Benda joins us from North Dakota for a great conversation on Butchering animals for the freezer. We dive into two schools of thought, whole muscle vs pre-cut freezing. Nick and Jeff also go off on a few tangents about freezing cuts in a marinade for quicker meat to meal transition. The guys finish up on some soup ideas for warming you up in the dead of winter. Trying to shorten the time between deep freeze and delicious on this episode of Huntavore.

Jeff is a returning guest on the podcast. Hailing from North Dakota, wildgame is a passion of his. Versed in a whole number of species, Jeff has compiled a whole range of recipes, taking full advantage of the wild harvest. Nick asks how his past year has gone, and Jeff doesn’t disappoint. He was given a 24 hour window in Montana, and ends up putting down two deer, and is able to get them gutted and back home. A real testament to meat-hunters. The guys turn to two schools of thought; whole muscle vs pre-cut. Cutting whole cuts into steaks, or pre portioned packages is a great way to get to the meal quickly. However, you are locked into whatever pre-determined dish you were thinking of. Whole muscle is quicker at the butcher block and offers a variety of directions to prepare the cut, the flip side is that more work needs to happen coming out of the freezer. A balance of the two can offer the best of both worlds.

Jeff and Nick also discuss the idea, or packaging a pre-cut muscle or even a whole muscle in a marinade and then freezing it. Jeff says it should work, but maybe avoid citrus or anything very acidic. To finish out the episode, Nick asks Jeff about some soup ideas and again, Jeff doesn’t leave us wanting. A Venison Ravioli soup sounds tops a cold winter night.

On this "No Foreplay" episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is joined by Andy May to discuss the difference between target panic and buck fever. Andy shares his story about acquiring target panic several years ago and what he did to to get out of his archery slump. He talks about pin movement, jerking right before the shot, where to find information that will help you beat target panic, and different styles of shooting, AKA command vs surprise shooting.

Andy then moves on to "buck fever" He feels that buck fever is completely different that target panic and is completely normal for all hunters to go through. Andy suggest breathing in for 3 seconds, then exhaling for 3 seconds in order to slow down your heart-rate. Just another informative episode with an experienced hunter and archer. ENJOY & SHARE!

2nd Amendment Foundation

Firearms

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show talking with Adam Kraut the executive director of the Second Amendment Foundation. We open up with Logan asking Adam to give us a run down on some of the “wins” that correlate with the Second Amendment. He brings up Bruen and gives us an in-depth analysis on why this was such a huge win for the Second Amendment. One of the main focuses of Bruen is the right to bear arms outside of our homes. Although a big win, quite a few states and cities are still currently fighting the Bruen case. Be sure to listen to this episode presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about some recent wins for the Second Amendment across the United States.

Up next, Logan brings up how the Second Amendment Foundation is celebrating its 50-year anniversary this year. While it’s an amazing accomplishment that we all celebrate, it unfortunately means that they’ve been having to fight for firearms rights for the entire time. Adam gives us a history lesson on the Second Amendment Foundation, including the first years and how it became able to file lawsuits. Since the organization’s inception, it has been involved with over 260 cases fighting for Second Amendment rights with 58 active cases currently. The current lawsuit is to challenge the federal prohibition on medical marijuana users in Pennsylvania.

Allen brings up the Gun Rights Policy Conference. The main point is to get everyone involved in protecting Second Amendment rights together, to collaborate and work together to help keep the needle moving. If this is something you’re interested in, you can go to the 38th Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference this year in San Diego, California. Logan also brings up pistol braces and the current legal landscape. Adam gives us the rundown on pistol braces, so listen in to hear all about it!

This weeks show is an awesome one. The guys are joined by Rob Beckman who is working to petition the state of Ohio to allow rifles for deer hunting across the state. As many of you know, rifles are allowed for many other hunting activities, so what makes deer hunting with them so much different? Many of our neighboring states allow them, and Rob has some great knowledge and presents a very compelling case for why we in Ohio should be allowed to use traditional rifle cartridges.

Below is a link to a petition you can sign to join the movement for allowing rifles to be another tool in the Ohio hunters tool belt.

Paul and Andrew are just working through lifes challenges. Both are coming upon their busiest times of the year in their professional lives, and of course Paul is like a kid counting down the days until Christmas, as turkey season approaches quickly! A few stories from around the state, and more on this weeks episode

Good luck out in the woods this week!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Brandy Adam. Brandy works for the National Rifle Association and plays a huge role in planning the Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg each year. We kick off with the prep work for the show. A lot has changed since the NRA has taken it over in 2014, and we would argue it's bigger and better than ever. From here, we learn a little bit more about Brandy's journey through the world of hunting and outdoor recreation.

Brandy did not grow up in a hunting family, and has grown from a borderline anti hunter to an extremely successful woman in the field. This part of the show provides a ton of perspective most men will typically never see. Guys, if you've wanted to get your wife or daughter involved in your passions, there is a lot to learn from this episode. Brandy not only hunts harder than some guys, she has a desire to help grow hunting and shooting sports in local clubs, and inspire other women to navigate the unique journey of being a female in the outdoor world.

This week we're phoning in from across the big river, as we talk with Iowa native, Kent Boucher! Now I know what you're thinking, isn't this the WISCONSIN Sportsman? Yes, it is, but Kent is too awesome of a guy, and possesses a wealth of knowledge too great to miss, and spoiler alert, this isn't the last you'll be hearing from him!

Kent hosts the First Gen Hunter Podcast, the Prairie Farm Podcast, and is the Production Manager of Hoksey Native Seeds. In this episode, Pierce and Kent have a great conversation on the importance  and countless benefits of prairies on our landscapes, and how the work Kent and his team are doing at Hoksey is impacting landscapes across the midwest. They also have a serious talk about land usage and the evolution and (in many cases) disappearance of family farms across much of America's heartland. Throughout this, they cover many of the struggles that farmers face in this current era, and shed some light on many misconceptions people hold about farming as a whole. After that, they dive into Kent's journey as a first-generation hunter, and how he has learned and begun his journey as an outdoorsman while raising and growing a family.

It's an absolutely fantastic conversation, that we think you will all learn a lot from. Be sure to go follow along with Kent's work and adventures @first.gen.hunter and @hokseynativeseeds , and listen to the awesome content he's putting out on The First Gen Hunter Podcast and The Prairie Farm Podcast on whatever platform you listen on!

Predator Hunting

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Will Gulsby (Auburn University/ Wild Turkey Science Podcast) discuss coyotes, land management, coyote removal, fawn recruitment, and predator-proofing a property. Will discusses coyote ecology, and the purpose these animals serve on the landscape. Will describes the biology of predators and how coyotes serve to the betterment of our landscape and how we sometimes paint a bad picture of their role. Will explains the historical relevance of predators and the evolution of coyotes as it pertains to their specific role in the wildlife community.

Will explains small predators, competition of food sources and the niche role coyotes can play in developed areas that have overpopulation of deer numbers, where fawn recruitment is high. Will introduces social carrying capacity and balancing deer numbers, hunting, and focuses on what many misinterpret as myths to the significance of coyotes. Will discusses coyotes’ diet, and the evolution of change as wolves have left the landscape. Will explains the variation in diets seasonally, and the misinterpretation of coyote kills based on scavenging verse predation. Will discusses primary winter diets and the transition to summer diets, specifically plant material. Will discusses scat surveys that he does with coyotes and how to better understand diets throughout each year and what scat reveals about a coyote.

Will discusses game birds (i.e. turkey) and the mortality that may persist on the landscape because of various predators. Will explains how difficult it is to evaluate predator kills, scavenging and the impact of coyotes on turkeys and the related population. Will and Jon discuss foxes, racoons and other predators on the landscape and the ecological roles. Will explains indiscriminate killing, if killing coyotes in small- or large-scale matters and if reproduction increases and what other factors like resident or nomadic, type animals are relevant to decisions to manage coyotes. Will explains compensatory immigration and how removing coyotes may be filled by other coyotes, with the potential to increase population. Will provides the scale and size of movements of coyotes and some coyotes can travel far greater than many would think.

Will discusses more on predator control programs, and factors that are relevant to assessing the impact of trapping and killing of coyotes. Will explains ideal conditions in trapping coyotes and efficiency in scale and size on the landscape. Will details annual verse occasional trapping and hunting. Will introduces the concept that habitat management is also a predator management tactic, and habitat impacts predation rates.

Jon and Will discuss habitat management and the tactics surrounding design options and how to look at properties on a large scale.  Will discusses a relevant study that details forest types and age classes that is relevant to fawn survival. Will dives deeper into landscape design philosophies and options to ensure that better habitat can exist supporting our resident deer herd. Will and Jon discuss fear ecology and the impact on deer. Will explains how this has been studied and deer behavior as it relates to predators.
