Jonny Griffin joins the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week to talk about his company Hype Outdoors. Hype Outdoors is about pretty much anything that gets you excited outdoors, from hunting to rock climbing. Jonny's true passion though is definitely big whitetails. Jonny and John start things off talking about filming your hunts and all the work that goes into it, especially self filming. Jonny walks us through a morning in the life of a self filmed hunter, from waking up hours earlier to slowing down to film all the small things that make a big difference in the long run.

Jonny is also involved with Quest Hunt Co. and is helping bring the deer hunting competition to Oklahoma. The contest is made up of two person teams that compete for prizes at the end of the season. Lastly, the two just talk a little deer hunting. Jonny talks about what he looks for in a stand site, and how he scouts public land. Jonny puts a lot of time in on OnX and Google Earth before ever stepping foot in the field, and contributes a lot of his success to that method. If you are looking for a reason to get excited for the upcoming deer season, this episode will do that and more!

On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Kris Chain. A Hunter, Gardener, and Educator from Virginia. Kris took it upon himself to create a personalized digital almanac that sorts info and links for game species, growing seasons, foraging dates all at your fingertips. Kris lays out how this tool can save you loads of time preparing your hunts or gardens. We also get into some bear meat talk, as Nick has yet to get his hands on some. The guys finish up with street tacos and what would Kris’ final meal request be. All this and more on the next episode of Huntavore.

Nick digitally sits down with Kris Chain, creator of Season Report. A personalized digital almanac that brings your desired hunting, gardening, fishing, and foraging information to a one stop platform. Want to add an out of state hunt, for a different species? Simply add the state and game animal and you get the sorted information you need, to take to the field.

Kris Chain also offers Season Report for $15 annually, and you can give it a try for free for 2 weeks

https://seasonreport.com/

Kris was able to harvest a bear last year, so Nick takes the opportunity to dive a bit deeper on bear meat. Its richness and moist texture makes bear meat a true eating experience. Kris describes the closest equivalent as a pork like texture, yet fully wild and it's own. Nick got very intrigued as if the bear boudin sausage could be a thing, Kris seemed very excited about the idea. Summer time also seems to be a great time to make a mess of tacos. Kris unpacks his venison or wild boar tacos. His go to is ground meat over shredded. Kris kept it straight forward by seasoning, and browning the meat, but finishes off by adding a ladle of stock to keep the meat moist and add a slight sausiness to the taco meat.

Making Outdoor Wishes Come True

It can be so easy to be consumed by your passion in the outdoors.  Whether you're after a Pope and Young, going on a cross country turkey hunting tour, or logging hundreds of hours casting a line, it can become quite infectious.  But at the end of the day, why do we do what we do?  For one, our own self ambition can drive us to chase thrill and adventure.  However at the end of the day, there is much more to this passion than that.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Jarrod Renninger of the One Wish Foundation.  This is a true non-profit organization that takes children with life altering conditions on the outdoor adventure of their dreams.  Jarrod is someone who loves the pursuit of big game like many others.  However, he has found a passion for sharing with those who are less fortunate.  Join and listen as Jarrod shares how this all began, and where he envisions it to go in the future.  You'll hear some truly heartwarming stories that will leave you with a reality check in your own life and outdoor passion.  If you would like to contribute to the One Wish Foundation, or you know a family who should be considered, visit https://onewishfoundation.org/owf/.

With hunting season only a couple months away, it’s time to start thinking about food plots. Some hunters believe they’re the ticket to tagging mature bucks each fall. Others avoid them, supposing daylight sightings of bucks are few and far between on food plots. What role should they play in your hunting strategy? And what goes into establishing a food plot that will attract deer?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Jon Teater of Whitetail Landscapes about establishing food plots on your hunting ground. Jon is an absolute wealth of knowledge when is comes to habitat and managing your ground for whitetails. Each year, he helps landowners design their properties to attract and hold big bucks. In this episode, Jon talks about the importance of soil health, minimizing hunting pressure on food plots, and shares tons of tips on food plot design and planting.

This is a good contrast to the episodes I posted with Steve Sherk since the terrain is different. However, you'll still see similar tendencies in many cases for what deer are doing throughout the summer months and how to capitalize and maximize your intel. We talk about boots-on-the-ground scouting versus minimizing intrusion, running trail cameras, where to place them, how often to check them, whether it's better to cluster them or spread them way out, mock scrapes, glassing, and even how to start to transition some of the intel into early season plans.

The conversation revolves around what the main differences are between products that are just "good enough" verses superior products with added functionality. Sometimes the differences can be great and sometimes the difference can be as objective as personal preference. The guys discuss if price reflects quality, where a product is manufactured, and specific products like bows, boots, treestands, and archery accessories. Dan and Marcus discuss the vast differences between hunting whitetails in the midwest and chasing mule deer in the southwest. Tim details a recent client visit and understory strategy he employs to help improve deer use. Tim explains the importance of light and how to manage that across the varying levels of forest infrastructure. Both contributors discuss plants deer eat.

Tim and Jon discuss the process of evaluating the understory and the best perspective to allow the correct amount of light to the forest floor to improve cover and food. Tim discusses his method to evaluate the density of trees and the proper technique to ensure that landowners understand how to look past the number of trees per acre. Jon provides some suggestive basal area measurements that may be helpful for significant understory improvement and regeneration. Tim explains the concerns he dealt with on a client visit and how the client is shifting his focus to improving overstory and understory plants.

Tim explains what to do first before cutting any trees. Both contributors discuss plant use and replacement and the benefits to deer or other animals. Tim discusses the impact of legacy effects from deer and how that can alter the resulting forest. Jon discusses strategy to increase understory value for deer. Tim explains a concept called timber pimping and how not to be taken advantage by someone that may want to devalue your timber.

Summer is a great time to get kids outdoors. The weather is nice, there’s a ton of opportunities, and you don’t have the pressure that comes with tagging a big buck or longbeard. Getting your kids outdoors is extremely rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. Often times, it will seem like a sacrifice to do all the work that comes with bringing kids along. But the investment is well worth it! And with a little planning, patience, and creativity, you can make an investment in them that will pay dividends far into the future.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Max Kulick, an avid outdoorsman who is truly committed to getting his kids outside. Max is an opportunistic hunter, fisherman, forager, and gardener, taking advantage of all that the seasons of Wisconsin allow. He and his wife do a great job of getting their kiddos outside and fostering their connection to the earth and their food. In this episode, the guys talk deer and turkey hunting, plans for the upcoming season, and of course, all that goes into sharing our outdoor heritage with the next generation. Enjoy!

Affordable Once In A Lifetime Hunts

Big Game
Whitetail
Bowhunting

Eric Bonicelli had never done any western big game hunting before he moved to New Mexico. Once he got settled in, he realized he had landed in a sportsman's paradise and immediately began taking advantage of it. He drew a once in a lifetime oryx tag, a barbary sheep tag, an elk tag in one of the state's most coveted units, and several deer tags. New Mexico is one of the few states that does not have a preference point system, and Eric says that is exactly why hunters should be looking into hunting in New Mexico. Sure you may go your entire life without drawing an elk tag in the famous Gila Mountains, but you might also draw it the very first time you try!

If you think this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is only about a single state though, you are greatly mistaken. Eric has also found some amazing international hunts that are much more affordable than most people think. And he throws in some tips and things to watch out for that can raise the price if you aren't careful. He has hunted rivers flowing with ducks in Nicaragua, and bruised his shoulder shooting doves in Argentina, both of which cost him less than a guided midwestern whitetail hunt! If you have a once and a lifetime type hunt on your bucket list, this episode might just help you make that hunt become a reality.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Mitch dives into some season preparation with a bit more philosophy than direct strategy.  As June slips away into the heat of summer, time to prepare for the upcoming archery season is also fading.  Work has taken a significant chunk of Mitch's time but he still managed to help out and share the latest status of food plots at his hunting locations to prepare for this fall.  In addition, he discusses the off-season practice routine he uses to build muscle memory and hone his shot execution this fall.

Lastly, we discuss shot ethics on game and knowing the limits of yourself and your equipment.  Information overload is a real issue for beginners in the outdoors.  While there is a ton of fantastic information available to get people started, it can be easy to take things out of context and have poor experiences.  One such example is shot placement and how that relates between species and the arrow set-ups you use.  This is where philosophy takes over, and even if you're a seasoned veteran we challenge you to reevaluate your shot process and be accountable for every arrow you release!.

It’s officially summer. It’s hot, the woods are thick, and the water is calling your name. But for the die-hard whitetail hunter, the work never stops. It’s time to get boots on the ground for some summer scouting. While fighting ticks, thick vegetation and a three-digit heat index may not sound like a lot of fun, summer scouting can set you up for success this fall, especially if you’re covering unfamiliar ground.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Warbritton from The Hunting Public about how he approaches summer scouting. Aaron and the rest of the THP crew literally make a living by taking big bucks in limited time on highly pressured public land. And as you’ll learn from this episode, a lot of their success can be attributed to scouting, specifically, summer scouting. Aaron doesn’t put as much stock into some of the typical summer scouting tactics like glassing ag fields. Instead, he prefers to jump right into the thick of it and try to find where the bucks are bedding, or will be bedding com hunting season. Tune in to hear how Aaron uses summer scouting to put him and the rest of the THP crew on big bucks come the fall.

Man, we made it!  Triple Digits, the century mark, a milestone where podcasters find that their little project has now become something greater.  On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick celebrates getting to this point, then relieves the amazing weekend up north at Total Archery Challenge; the friends, the fun shots, and the food.  Smoked Shot Shells  were a surprise hit, so we break down this little meat treat.  Nick also hit the foraging gold mine of Golden Oyster Mushrooms.  So I invite you, pour a glass, and celebrate with Nick, on this 100th episode of Huntavore.

First, Nick needs to thank a small village for their involvement in Huntavore.  His wife and kids, Former co-host Dustin, huge encourager Peggy Kline, Dan Johnson and the entire Sportsman’s Empire, all the amazing guests and listeners.  Thank you all.

Total Archery Challenge, Crystal Mountain Michigan was a huge hit.  Like any big event, some hiccups were there, but our experience wasn’t tarnished.  Shooting two days, 4 courses, hiking plenty of miles and floors, making what at first looked like impossible shots.  What a wonderful way to practice long range archery.  One of the dishes that we made was Smoked Shot Shells

Here is the link:

https://youtu.be/4fkFNNJkb7g

Nick also stumbled upon a stump loaded with Golden Oyster Mushrooms.  His culinary drive was salivating.  First objective was to preserve the bounty.  First was sauté and freeze.  Second was full dehydration.  Incredible how much water is actually in mushrooms, they dried down to almost nothing.

Bowfishing for Giant Alligator Gar

Strategy

Fishing

This week John and his guest tackle one of the most requested topics of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Bowfishing! Bowfishing started gaining popularity in the late 80's and early 90's, but really took off in the 2000's. Casey Minshew is well known in the trinity river bowfishing circles, and his specialty is large alligator gar. Casey has been called on and acted as a guide by biologist conducting research, and even had the pleasure of taking Tim Wells on an adventure. Though he is highly regarded and respected, he does little guiding and mostly just enjoys bowfishing and the challenges of finding and hauling in giant gar.

On this episode Casey and John spend a little time talking about the gear you need for bowfishing and how it differs from traditional archery equipment. They then spend a little time talking about the difference between bowfishing at night versus the day, and how to locate and shoot fish at night. Then comes Casey's favorite topic, finding and shooting huge alligator gar. Not only does he talk strategy, he also gives a lot of general information about alligator gar and their behavior and habits. If you have ever been interested in bowfishing, you will definitely want to check out this episode. Every time Casey puts his boat in the water, his goal is to find a 7 foot fish!

Andrew didn't grow up in a hunting family, although his family didn’t hunt, they weren't opposed to the idea of it. In his early 20's Andrew started to get into hunting and it has quickly grown into one of his greatest passions. In mid 2021, Andrew and friend Paul Campbell started the O2 podcast, representing Ohio in the Sportsmen's empire. On this episode of The nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with fellow Sportsmen’s Empire podcaster and host of Southern Ground Hunting Parker McDonald about using waterways to access unpressured public land.

Parker grew up in the oil patch of West Texas, cutting his teeth on whitetail hunting the “Texas way”. After high school he moved to the deep south in Alabama, and never looked back. Hunting in the south can be challenging, but Parker has learned that with just a little bit of extra effort, you can see high volumes of success hunting southern whitetails on public land. Parker uses boats, kayaks and other means of water transportation to hunt areas of where he can get away from heavy hunting pressure. Dan and Parker discuss the benefits of hunting these areas as well as the tips, tricks and strategies for scouting and picking out the perfect spot. Parker started using these strategies 8 years ago and now takes the show on the road by putting it into practice on public land in multiple states.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with two guys that are doing as much as they can to grow the sport of archery at their local club.  Jonathan Henne and Justin Delong took over running archery shoots at the Shartlesville Rod and Gun Club in Berks County Pennsylvania, and have been growing ever since.  We discuss how they went from flinging arrows, to being pro-staff shooters at IBO tournaments, to building up their club and supporting archery locally.

In addition, Mitch and Robby discuss the ups and downs of target panic with their guests and how each one of them have combated their shooting dilemma.  We discuss training exercises, equipment setups, and shot process fundamentals that helped each of them improve their ability as shooters on target and in the hunting woods.  It's a fun episode to get you thinking about summer practice and preparation for archery season this fall!

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan is joined by the owner of Wild Edge, Andrew Walter, to discuss their lineup of mobile hunting gear. Andrew kicks off the episode by talking about how Wild Edge is the re-birth of an old product, the Step Ladder, and how gave it a second chance with the help of social media and the internet. The first two year of the company were pretty slow and he was second guessing himself if the company would ever take off. Then, with the help of an investor and a lot of hard work, this American made company started to take off.

Years later after the company started to stabilize, Andrew began to introduce the more products that fit in to the popular saddle hunting community. Multiple saddle hunting platforms, a comfortable saddle, and all of the saddle hunting accessories you could ever need, Andrew has made Wild Edge a true one-stop-shop for all of your mobile hunting needs.

Some topics include:

- Changing from a saddle back to a stand

- Getting into traditional archery

- New bows for the 2022 season

- Packs

- Arrow setups

- One Stick climbing method
