[UNCENSORED] - The Slowest Float Trip Ever

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Public Land

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk all about the upcoming deer season, it’s definitely crunch time. Brayden talks about moving trail cameras to new spots to hopefully catch some real big mature whitetails coming through to hopefully pattern before season opener. Jacob speaks on not having sighted his bow even though season is right around the corner. Any of you guys wait until the last moment to get your bow dialed in?

We then dive into Dan’s upcoming draw hunt at land between the lakes. We talked about the kit for his trip, what he plans to take, and his plan on camping in his truck. He talks about checking OnX for his draw to see what his zone looks like; map wise he thinks it looks phenomenal. Dan and Brayden go into learning thermals for hunting and just how complicated it is but if done correctly can absolutely pay off. Dan mentions going scouting soon for his hunt, because he learned the hard way that scouting off of map images isn’t always what you expect it’s going to be!

Jacob speaks on his recent trip to Toccoa River in Georgia that he cannot recommend enough for a fun fishing trip. He fished both the upper and lower parts of Lake Blue Ridge catching some nice trout while wading in abnormally shallow water that he couldn’t quite figure out why the fish were hanging out in it. The next day he goes on a float trip with a group of guys, and it was absolutely painfully slow. Pro-tip make sure you float when the dam is turned on to make the trip go at a decent speed.

Wrapping up the episode Dan updates us on his upcoming total eclipse plans for next year after searching high and low for a reasonable AirBnB. His awesome plans include being on a kayak in the middle of the lake for the eclipse, talk about an awesome experience! If you ever want to engage in a long conversation with Dan just make sure you bring up the eclipse!

Over the last couple of years, new opportunities to chase velvet bucks have opened up for southern hunters. One of the earliest is found in the great state of Tennessee. Each year, hunters have the chance to hunt velvet bucks in August on private lands with archery tackle or on some select public lands within Tennessee's CWD unit. While the conditions are anything but pleasant, unpressured deer with a more layed-back August temperament make the hunt worth while.

In this episode of the Southern Way Hunting Podcast, Josh talks with Taylor Philpot and Justin Grogan of Revive Outdoors about their TN velvet hunt success. Both guys were able to fill their tags with velvet bucks, but that's where the similarities in their stories end. For this episode, Taylor shares the story of how his three year public land velvet pursuit came to an end with a beautiful Tennessee bucks.

Big Game

The guys are at it again this week with a sit down with Mike of Drone Deer Recovery. Mike has taken his knowledge and passion for drones and technology to the next level to aide hunters in finding dead and wounded deer.  This conversation is a great one, and another tool that we as hunters in Ohio can have in our tool belts to help locate a deer after the hunt if need be.  Mike’s company is growing and new operators are all over the state ready to help you if in need.

The guys are busy with life, so not much to report from their time in the woods this week. Andrew did do some scouting of a new property, and having a little success on the cameras.  Paul has been under the weather for a couple days so not much happening with him.
Around the state, the hunting seasons continue to open.  September 9th opens up the first days of archery hunting in the DSA! Be on the look out for a new invasive insect problem, the zigzag elm saw fly.  Turkey research happening in the state, as well as Hocking Hills ranked #1 top tourists spots in Ohio!

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

What’s in your Kill Kit?

Big Game
Bowhunting

Whitetail

On this Episode of Huntavore, September is here and the final push to season opener for whitetails is here upon us. Nick walks through his archery equipment and how he checks the condition of very vital gear. Later he breaks down the contents of a recovery bag and his own kill kit for making life easier and cleaner when bringing home the harvest. Lots of good tasks to add to your to do list on this episode of Huntavore.

Nick starts out with a run through of his archery setup; saddle, sticks, platform, bow, & arrow. Getting the stand pieces organized, and essential parts checked for damage or wear is a priority at the moment. Only real change this year is switching to a framed pack. He purchased the F1 Mainframe with two batwing pouches. While it’s not been tested in the whitetail woods, the pack served Nick very well chasing elk. Light and study, modular and expandable, Nick hopes for more stability than his frameless pack.

Kill bags can range from full kits in the deep wilderness, to a sealable freezer bag with a few essentials. Preparing for success can make the recovery process a whole heck of a lot easier.

My whitetail kill kit:

All fits in Quart sealable freezer bag; 3’ x 3’ folded plastic sheet or contractors bag, Gallon sealable freezer bag, Gloves, 2 blue shop towel sheets, A folding replaceable blade knife, Length of paracord.

Tossed in the pack pocket: Fixed blade, bull nosed gut hook knife,Hoof shackles/ drag rope

Elk or deep woods add ons:

Bigger ground cover, Honing stone/steel or sharpener, Another knife, Bone saw, Game bags, A bit more length of paracord

Items to consider:

Butt out II, Roll of TP, Game Cart/electric bike saddle bags, Meat hauler pack

007’s Pistol’s Past & Dirty Harry’s Dirty Little Secrets

Big Game
Firearms
Gear

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about real pop culture firearms such as the Walther PPK and the Smith & Wesson Model 29. We start the episode off diving into the history of the Walther PPK and how it made its way into the James Bond films. Logan delves into the history of the PPK and how it’s dated back to the early 1930s before being used by Germans in WWII, some of these early models had a requirement for the magazine to be serialized and match the gun’s serial number. Logan has a magazine that is serialized and is always looking to be able to pair that magazine to its original gun. We talk on how we got introduced to the Walther PPK through Bond, while iconic to the movies almost all of us have stronger memories of using it playing 007 Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. How were you introduced to the Walther PPK?

Next up, maybe one of, if not if THE most iconic movie guns…Dirty Harry’s Smith & Wesson Model 29. Smith & Wesson were in a bad spot with the Model 29, almost completely scraping it from their lineup until the success of Dirty Harry pushed it to the forefront of the spotlight, causing national backorder for many years. Brad asked about the value of firearm memorabilia from movies comparing both real firearms and prop guns. While credible proof of them being used in a movie carries value, the real firearms generally carry a much heftier price tag. Logan tells his story of how he’s tied to Dirty Harry’s Model 29, and you guys will absolutely not believe it, make sure you listen in to hear his cool story.

We end the episode with Dan talking about the two most iconic movies from his childhood. He starts a conversation about how the impracticality of a gun in a movie makes it more memorable to people who watch. Logan retouches on a previous episode about the takedown lever action rifle from John Wick 4, Mad Pig Customs reached out and set the record straight on if it’s a real gun or a fantasy gun. Make sure to listen through the end of the podcast to see the answer on this awesome gun.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles deer hunting podcast, Dan catches up with Jeremy Dinsmore of the Antler Up podcast to discuss the results of his recent out of state scouting mission. The guys kick off the episode the only way then know how, by an in-depth conversation about college football and the realignment of conferences. Then Dan asks Jeremy a couple really dumb questions about his last name and how it reminds him of beef stew. Finally, the guys get in to the meat and potatoes of the episode and talk about Jeremy's recent scouting trip to Ohio looking for places to hunt on public property. Jeremy explains what he found, when he plans on going back to hunt, what he thinks his access routes will be, and how wind and thermals will impact all of his hunting decisions. This is an excellent episode where two serious hunters break down a piece of property and talk about the strategy Jeremy plans to use on this upcoming hunt.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - A Grain Farmer's Perspective on Whitetails

Big Game

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we are taking a slightly different course. With deer season right around the corner, we've been focused on preparation. From strategies to harvest your target, to meat preparation, we've got you covered for this fall. But everything revolves around filling an antlered deer tag these days. What about antlerless deer? Are enough being harvested in your area?

This week's guest is Dustin Kieffer from Mark M Kieffer and Son. Dustin is a third generation grain farmer in central Pennsylvania, farming around 3200 acres. After a quick back story on the operation, we dive into a controversial topic - too many deer. This episode does not have any motive or suggestion to the problem. It's simply to provide you the listener, a different perspective in the community. We discuss the changes in deer pressure over the previous decades, and how this operation is adjusting it's farming practices to the ever growing deer population in this region of the state.  We as deer hunters are not the only ones who appreciate deer. Some people depend on us harvesting them for their income!

In this episode, Ricky and Hollywood have a chat with Sam Soholt of Public Land Tees and the main topic of conversation is Conservation.

Sam and his brother Josh have dedicated much of their lives to conserving wildlife, as well as preserving the tradition of the hunt. Instead of reinventing the wheel, they started a campaign to raise conservation funds known as “Stamp It Forward”. The campaign has contributed to the purchase of thousands of Federal Duck Stamps, infusing tens of thousands of dollars into Wetland Conservation. Of those dollars, 98% by law, must be used for Wetland Conservation.

As Sam mentions, “What’s good for the bird, is good for the herd”. Wetland conservation provides habitat for over 700 different species of animals, including small and big game. This year, they have stepped it up a notch with the 100 Mile Duck Ruck. Sam will hike 100 miles, through the Prairie Pothole region, in an attempt to earn the funds pledged for the campaign. Sam is swinging for the fences to raise $100,000! Head over to publiclandtees.com/duckruck to participate. Link will also be in our bio.

We open the episode with Dan talking all about his upcoming plans for the 2024 total solar eclipse. He talks all in detail about his first time experiencing a total eclipse and just how amazing it was. Listen in to hear his favorite parts about it. He gives some pointers on finding out the perfect spots on where to experience this for yourself and how he believes everyone needs to experience it at least once in their life.

Next up Derek tells all about his recent trip to Tennessee to scout for bears and fish! While bear scouting he found an absolute gem of a fishing spot that yielded an awesome time catching small mouths. Judging by the map this spot is rarely ever fished and he could definitely tell by how they reacted. The fishing was good enough that next year he’s already planning a two-day float trip down the river. He also spends some time talking about the tooth data of his bear he harvested in Colorado last year. Super interesting information on the average age of bears that were harvested in Colorado last season.

Closing out this episode Jacob talks about the trip with Craig Arnold the winner of the GoWild x Federal Ammunition sweepstakes and their weekend with Jim Gilliland. Talking about an eye opening experience learning tons of information, Jacob definitely has some easier ways to sight in his rifle this season! We live in a technology driven world these days, so why not use that technology to our advantage? Rhett Acker of Oklahoma Drone Recovery Company joins John on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week to talk about how drones could help you recover more deer. Rhett was well prepared for this episode and brought a lot of knowledge to the table. Not just about recovering deer, but also animal behavior, and even more importantly the laws surrounding recovering animals with drone and thermal technology.

One thing John wanted to be sure to cover in this episode, is the advantages and disadvantages of both tracking dogs and drones when it comes to recovering downed game. Rhett actually sought out dog owners to learn from them and get their take on the subject as well. Whether you are pro or anti more technology in hunting, this is an important episode to listen to. While there are certainly advantages to using tools like drones in the outdoors, there is definitely an open door for them to be used in the wrong way and Rhett does a great job of covering that topic as well.

The challenges of hunting the early season have led many to overthink what's actually pretty simple. Notice I didn't say it's easy. It can be really, really tough. But it is simple. Despite his shoulder pain, Dan has a lot to look forward to now that he has confirmation that his #1 hit list buck from last year is back and even bigger than last year.

Lastly, Dan talks about his experience touring one of the best whitetail farms in the country. He explains how much time, energy, money, and passion goes in to managing deer on that working farm. Very interesting and eye opening experience.

No Lowballers

Cold War Weapons Are Hot

Firearms

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about Russian Cold War Weapons!

If one of us disappears by the end of the show, you know why. We open up with a discussion about how exactly to pronounce Makarov, pretty sure we still don’t have it down yet! Logan and Allen go into a discussion of the origin of the Makarov. From the ammo to the firearm itself, the Makarov has a super interesting background. With an extremely long shelf life from 1951 until present, the Makarov has been a staple in Russia and other communist countries. Dan asks a question about manufacturers of Makarovs specifically during the Cold War, the motto was if the government says you make Makarovs...you make Makarovs.

Then we pivot to the Stechkin APS, a select-fire machine pistol, by your fourth shot you’re sending lead at passing planes! The Stechkin had a very short shelf life, mostly due to the complete impracticality of them specifically in military scenarios, albeit they are super fun guns to shoot. While you can still find a Stechkin today, they are nowhere near as widely available as the Makarov, with many bringing a very large premium.

We spend some time talking movies and how the bad guys always have the Russian firearms! Spoiler alert, if the good guy pulls out a Makarov, chances are he won’t be the good guy for long. Do you know of a movie where the good guy carried a Makarov? Another movie easter egg proves that we may have some double agents at the table, listen in to see how we know who it is!

Allen gives us a run down on Russian surplus guns available on GunBroker.com and how the market is changing due to parts kits being harder to source.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 188 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Byron Horton from The Whitetail Experience.  Byron is a guest that I am extremely excited to have on the show! I have been watching Bryon’s YouTube videos the last few years and tune into his podcast whenever he drops them right here on the Sportmen’s Empire! This is one of those episodes where you name it, we talked about it when it comes to hunting whitetails! From the struggles of last season, mobile gear, the pay to play, self-filming and getting the last minute pieces together for this upcoming season, we talked about it!

We begin this episode by hearing Byron discuss some of the struggles he encountered last season and if there are any goals heading into this upcoming year.  We dive into some early season hunts that can be possible for Byron and the struggles with hunting during the early season.  We get into what Byron is doing right now to make sure everything is good to go for the year and what steps are needed to dial in your setup with all the gear before the year begins.  We also get into self-filming talk and this was really great to hear because I believe Byron does a hell of a job with the camera and telling a story through the lens.  If you haven’t had the chance to watch any of his videos, this evening go to YouTube and check them out! Some freaking awesome hunts! Byron also shares information regarding his Uncut series which is also on his YouTube channel…..So, tune in and listen to some stories and a fun conversation with Byron and make sure to follow along with what he is doing over at The Whitetail Experience!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsmen, Mitch starts off with an update on season preparation.  Nothing like waiting until the last minute to get stands, plots, and more ready for opening day!  Habitat management and private land hunting strategy are something Mitch enjoys deeply, and these recent projects got him fired up; prompting a little bit of philosophical argument between private land and public land hunting.  At the end of the day, do what you love!

The main course of this episode Mitch is joined by Nick Otto, host of the Huntavore podcast on Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network.  Prior to marriage and kids, Mitch used to butcher deer within 1-2 days of harvesting during early season when the weather was warm.  Now, it takes a bit more planning to accommodate processing into daily life.  Processors are always an option, but if you enjoy doing it yourself and want to save some coin, this episode may help you out!  Nick discusses the proper measures to take after the shot during the early season.  We navigate field dressing, skinning, quartering, cleaning, aging, temperature, and more.  Lastly, if you do not have a walk-in cooler, Nick provides some excellent tips on how to turn household appliances into a poor man's deer cooler, buying you time to process!  This is a fantastic episode for quality table fare!

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Eric Hansen (Just Hunt Club) discuss Box Blinds and why they are a primary consideration for hunters. Eric explains how he started with man-made box blinds and why he has changed to manufactured build blinds.  Eric explains his style of hunting and the benefit of hunting blinds and how manufactured blinds have made hard to hunt areas much easier.

Eric explains why he prefers wooden platforms versus metal stands. Eric identifies the height of his blinds and Jon discusses why box blinds within food plots, like corn, may not be the best option for hunters. Eric discusses using terrain and vegetation to create cover around a blind and how to create movement patterns that move deer more efficiently toward and past blinds.

Eric identifies pros and cons of each type of manufactured blind and what attributes of each blind he uses that are beneficial. Eric explains why Redneck blinds are his predominant choice on his property and how he is excited to use their larger version. Eric explains crop rotations and how he uses corn and why interseeding into corn is very difficult for most. Therefore, it is important to think about food plot layout and food preferences.

Eric and Jon discuss deer hunting differences in locations they are familiar with and the safety benefits of hunting out of a box blind. Each contributor gets into various topics about taking kids hunting, as well as other styles of hunting and things they are focused on this upcoming season.

This episode timed out perfectly with John's upcoming trip to Nebraska as well, so the guys get together to talk about early season velvet hunts. This year Chris will be hunting Tennessee's early velvet season, Kentucky's early September season, and then he heads west to Wyoming with several of the Mathew's team shooters to chase mule deer.

John's only September hunt is his trip to Nebraska which he hopes to now make a yearly tradition. The guys talk about early season topics like hunting bed to food patterns, corn vs beans, water holes, and how terrible mosquitoes can be when hunting so early in the season. They take a little time to discuss Oklahomas proposed velvet season and the effect it could have on the state's hunters and deer herd.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk about the upcoming hunting season. We start off with Dan Johnson getting into a story about hostile horses that he deals with on a piece of property he hunts. These horses absolutely do not want to see Dan coming through. From messing with his truck, making tons of noise in the woods, all the way to even picking him up! Yes, you read that correctly! Listen in to see how a horse picked him up completely off the ground while he was trying to whitetail hunt!

Next up Brayden talks about getting out and scouting for this upcoming hunting season. He talks about the

logistics of how he’s figuring out where these big mature bucks are and where he can get to them on a chokepoint. With some real dandies on camera this season, he’s super excited to go after them! Dan and Brayden get into a talk about how helpful it is to pattern mature does that then help you pattern the mature bucks. Dan speaks adamantly about just how important this is and how many people do not take the time to do so. If you can pattern your mature does early season, it could potentially pay off huge dividends during the rut.

We end our episode with Derek telling all about his recent troubles getting his bow dialed in. Different sights, same issues! What do you think was causing his bow to shoot low every shot? Hunting season is just around the corner, make sure to subscribe to hear all our upcoming hunting content.

Fly fishing is really where Tony has settled over the years and shares different technics he uses throughout the year. Tony also goes into more detail of how he breaks down a river and how to do some river scouting. Which Nate realizes has similarities to breaking down a property for whitetails or other game animals.

Nate and his wife Ashley really hope to join Tony on a river this fall, and look forward to the adventure and the learning experience.

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about how military technology impacted the way we hunt today. In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking about how military technology impacted the way the modern outdoorsman hunts today. We dive in with an integral part of the hunting industry: optics. Allen starts with Leupold, who at one point in time was the largest provider of small arms optics for the US Military. He tells us about the differences between optics that are military spec and optics that are consumer based with some military features. Logan spends some time talking about the Nydar Model 47 Shotgun sight, which is based on a military aviation sight, that was scaled down for shotguns. Next, Allen speaks on military bolt-action surplus rifles that were modified into hunting rifles. These guns were very inexpensive, which led to hundreds of thousands of these guns being sporterized. This conversation led us to Logan sharing a book from 1963, called “How to Convert Military Rifles” or in Logan’s words “How to Destroy a Military Firearm.” These books covered multiple different makes and models of military rifles and every step on how to convert them to a deer gun. Have you ever run across one of these sporterized rifles? We’d love to know if so! Brad brings up the modern sporting rifle field and how the AR-15 is a modern take on sporterizing a military rifle. From small game all the way to big game, the AR-15 has become a staple in the outdoor industry. Offering a ton of customization options and versatility, the AR-15 style rifle has boomed in the outdoors with many companies offering options specifically built for game and ready for consumers to take the woods. We end with a conversation on the first recruits in the Revolutionary War being men who grew up hunting. Brad speaks on how the Lewis & Clark Expedition looked specifically for rugged outdoorsmen and how those skillsets later converted well over to military. Allen ends up going through some amazing options for modern sporting rifles available on GunBroker.com If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!! The No Lowballers podcast is a brand new joint venture between GoWild and GunBroker.com to explore the history and heritage of firearms. But if you're looking for an affordable, simple, lightweight option that will still provide top notch video and sound quality, TACTACAM's point of view cameras are your best bet. So in this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Zoe Phillips from TACTACAM about self filming hunts and TACTACAM's line of cameras.

Real Hand Cannons, Flintlocks, & Weird Gun Words

Firearms
Strategy

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about handgun history and even let a few weird gun words fly!

In this week’s No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we’re talking all about hand guns including their history and the evolution to today’s gun. Alan jumps right in with a history of hand cannons! Early hand cannons emerged in the 14th century with a flower vase design that necked down smaller. Originally designed for use with arrows, which did not work well, they evolved to anything that hurt being loaded such as: gravel, chain, or nails.

Logan goes through the timeline of early hand guns. Starting with Hand Cannons that were extremely uncontrollable and inefficient. Much of early handguns was trial and error to see what worked or didn’t work. The next evolution was Matchlock which is a very simple design but with a constant lit match it was an extremely limited design. Some of the Matchlock downfalls included being put out by rain, potentially catching your own coat on fire, or even worse – showing the enemies exactly where you are!

Jacob asks an important question about effective range of early hand guns. Allen and Logan bring up the multitude of scenarios that play into that question. Are you shooting nails or chain? Everything out of a hand-cannon would have different effective distances but overall the consensus is if within conversational distance it would be much like the modern hand gun.

We speak on the purpose of early handguns. On the battlefield hand-cannons were more to spook cavalry vs actual effectiveness. When speaking of the wheellock, generally it was more of a boutique “Bar B Q” gun. Owned mostly by very wealthy individuals who had these custom built more as a conversational piece. They were extremely inefficient to shoot, imagine shooting a 2x4!

Next, we’re talking about the flintlock! Allen speaks of some of the flintlocks you can find on Gunbroker.com along with their price ranges. Allen tells us all about the different options for early hand guns. Flintlocks, Wheellocks, Matchlocks, and even Hand Cannons are available at a wide price range depending where you’d like to start your collection. He speaks on the Germanic Wheellock which was the sweet spot of them being produced.

We close the episode with all sorts of weird gun words. Touch-holes?? Nipples?? What are some of your favorite weird gun words?

If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rating and review!!

The No Lowballers podcast is a brand new joint venture between GoWild and GunBroker.com to explore the history and heritage of firearms. We hope to expose you to the vintage guns of the golden age along with newer, modern guns, specialty items, and a few other odd balls along the way. Jump in and come along for the ride!

On this week's episode I was joined by Jeff Cordero!  You may have seen Jeff on YouTube where he makes some really great content regarding archery and hunting but you may also have seen him working in the pit on the racetrack for the 24 car on the weekends.  Jeff and I had a really fun conversation about life, archery, hunting and more!

We begin this episode by getting an introduction to Jeff and hear how he is in the position he is with his job in the Nascar world.  This was a unique and refreshing conversation, which I am thrilled Jeff shared with us.  Following this up, we get into when Jeff picked up a bow and started hunting.  You can hear the passion and love he has for heading out west hunting elk, but also how much he enjoys hunting whitetails in North Carolina.  This past year Jeff was the 1st Phorm athlete winner of their outdoor challenge they held where he competed in archery and fitness activities and won $10,000!  We get caught up about that event, TAC events and where he will be hunting this upcoming year.  With his job schedule Jeff has some hard dates to go in and out of the field.  So, hearing how he plans these trips and prepares was awesome!  We wrap things up hearing the importance of learning to work on your own bow equipment or at the minimum learn to tie in a d-loop, etc.  I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I believe you will as well! Jeff is a good dude, who loves archery and hunting.  We seem to have a lot in common…..So, tune in and listen to some stories and a fun conversation with Jeff!  Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!
