This week the guys had the privilege to talk with Janis Putelis, of MeatEater. Many of you know Janis for his adventures with Steve Rinella and his clever remarks, but it didn’t start at the top. This discussion is more about how Janis got to where he is now. Janis discusses his younger days of working on ranches in Colorado, to time in Alaska, Utah, and eventually Montana.

Paul’s been traveling the world again for work but gearing up for deer season. Andrew was able to take an afternoon in the DSA at KillDeer plains to hang out in the tree. Nothing happening, but it was nice to get back into the woods and work out the kinks.

Deer archery season opens across the entire state of Ohio on September 24. Don’t forget to check out the OHLAP program for new properties across the state. There is a public rule shearing on 9/14/22 at 7pm at the District office at 1500 Dublin Rd Columbus OH. Keep an eye out for EHD as we move closer to the first frost. Also be on the look out for the spotted lantern fly in trees near your home and in the woods. This bug is another invasive one that can cause major damage to our woodlands. Report any findings to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Have a great week!!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Byron Horton of the Whitetail Experience podcast is back for a pre-season hunting BS Session. The guys kick off the episode by discussing the gear that they will be using for their upcoming bowhunts and if it is new, or if it is equipment that they have used previously. This includes boots, treestands and saddles, archery equipment, and if they modify their equipment or not.

The conversation then turns to the hunts the two have planned this year. Byron has a brand new baby at home and Dan will be coaching his kids soccer teams and they discuss the obstacles that may keep them from spending time in the tree. The two also discuss brownie points and the communication with their wives.

The guys finish up the episode by talking about the farms that they will be hunting and what the trophy quality looks like based on trail camera data and previous years experience. If you are in a long term relationship and have kids, this is a very relatable episode.

2022 Nebraska Hunt Breakdown

Big Game
Bowhunting

Whitetail

John is back from his early season Nebraka whitetail hunt, and he is ready to break down what he learned this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. It was a quick trip over a long weekend full of car trouble, getting stopped by land owners, learning a heck of a lot about whitetails, and having a blast doing it all. Everyone has heard that whitetail deer are "creatures of edge" and over Labor Day weekend John really got to learn what that meant. The mixture of crop fields, CRP, and timbered creeks gave ample opportunity to see how deer use different terrain features and vegetation types to their advantage. John also learned that not all soybeans are created equal, or have the same appeal to deer.

One of the best surprises of the trip though, was how easy it ended up being to gain access to private land. It definitely helped having a local inside man to speak on John's behalf, but over all most of the people John interacted with were happy to help or at least give some knowledge. John left his house with 110 acres to hunt, and driving home he now has access to over 1,300 acres for future trips! So even though he came home with a giant pot of tag soup, the trip was far from a waste, and the knowledge he gained on this out of state trip will absolutely help him bag more bucks back on his home turf.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick digitally sits down with Rick Casey, CEO of CHARD Products. Rick has a passion for wildgame, growing up in the U.P. of Michigan, Rick has fond memories of bringing in deer to the family garage and working together to create the amazing dishes of his yesteryears, like his grandma’s potato sausage. Rick also goes into how hunting and venison has impacted the design of his products, helping them be more effective for the hunter’s kitchen. If meat means more to you than just a fuel source, then this is your episode. Settle on in for a nostalgia filled episode of Huntavore.

Rick Casey is a problem solver. He sees products and notices changes that can be made to make them better. He has turned this trait into successful businesses. So when Rick had the chance to improve meat processing equipment, he fell back on his upbringing. Holidays in the U.P. , cutting venison with his family. What worked? What did he wish was changed back then? How could I improve the process of bringing wild game to my family’s table? Through this Rick has improved many of his CHARD Products.

https://linktr.ee/chardproducts

In our chat, Rick was so open about how much food means to him. Taking the time to not only sell a product hunters could use and be content with mediocre, Rick had to tinker and think about how he used poorly designed products before, and fix those quirks. Even if it was widen the legs to make it more stable, or using steel gears instead of plastic for a more robust build. These are changes that can help hunters step up their processing game. Ricks idea of making processing and cooking your wildgame is what he called closing the circle. So much effort is given preparing, executing, and finishing the hunt. Why stop there?

Conventional whitetail wisdom espouses a few basic tenets for early season hunting: find where the deer bed, find where they eat, and don’t hunt mornings. While hunting mornings in the early season is very different than, say, November 5th, early season morning hunts can still be very productive. In this episode, guest Mark Haslam shares the strategies he’s used to kill mature bucks in the morning during the early season four years running, including his most recent South Carolina velvet brute.

Mark Haslam is a deer hunter and land manager from Georgia who spends most of his hunting time in South Carolina. Mark runs southeastwhitetail.com, hosts the Southeast Whitetail podcast, and writes for Wired to Hunt on Meateater. He was also named the 2020 National Deer Association Deer Manager of the Year hunts and manages his family farm in South Carolina. Mark knows his stuff, and his tactics for early season hunting can be effective no matter where you hunt.

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 137 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Rick Brule from Vapor Trail and Stokerized! Rick has been with Vapor Trail for over 10 years and he shares a little bit about himself and their companies. Rick talks about his upcoming Boundary Waters hunt and all the details regarding what he will be going after and when!  We asked Ricke about his whitetail hunting situation for this upcoming season and it was really interesting to hear the way Rick hunts the metro Minnesota areas. Right after that Rick dives into two different Pope and Young buck stories! Then we wrap things up by talking about some whitetail calling strategies and experiences.

To start things off in the podcast Rick briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with Vapor Trail and Stokerized.  Vapor Trail has been extremely busy this past year not only with products but with building their own pro shop in Minnesota!  Rick shares some information regarding their shop and what people in the area can expect when they go there! From actually selling products, hanging out, 40 yard range and Techno Hunt! Rick follows this up by talking about his upcoming season which includes a 2 week canoe trip in the Boundary Waters!  This is where he drew a limited bear tag but plans to fish, hunt whitetails and birds!  Really interesting to hear how he plans on attacking this trip and makes you want to go for the ride!  Following this conversation up we dove right into his two Pope & Young whitetail buck stories.  Both stories happen during the middle of November and hearing how he was able to overcome a bad shot on the biggest buck yet to date.  To finish off the episode Rick shares how his improved calling techniques has led to him getting more deer encounters and what he is doing. Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

Wisconsin’s archery deer season is a little more than two weeks away! As you wrap up all your last minute prep, be sure to make brushing up on the rules and regulations a normal part of your preseason ritual. Every year, outdoorsmen receive warnings and citations for issues that could have been easily avoided. Toward that end, this week’s guest is Matt Koshollek, Conservation Warden for Dane County in Southern Wisconsin.

Matt is a lifelong outdoorsman and spends much of his time enjoying the natural resources that Wisconsin has to offer. In this episode, Josh and Matt cover a day in the life of a Conservation Warden, dealing with drunk bears, and some common (easily avoidable) wildlife violations Matt encounters. Enjoy!

When you think outdoors/deer hunting podcasts, a couple of the OG’s, Mark Kenyon and Dan Johnson, sat down with the guys to talk deer hunting.  The conversation starts with a little history lesson in the Wired to Hunt legacy, with Dallas and a young Mark. Paul and Andrew then take to the escouting world, and attempt to run down a location with Mark and Dan.  Poor Mark and Dan had to work hard to deal with a couple of incompetent hunters. The conversation was a good one with more to come in the future.

Paul and Andrew have had a busy past week.  Andrew’s recovering from his knee operation, but back in the saddle soon.  Paul is gearing up for his opening days of duck hunting season.  Both guys spent some time at Vance’s over the weekend at the Tethrd teach and train event.  The event was spectacular and very well done.  News around the state covers the new Cadet class, status of Indian Lake’s unwanted vegetation, and a new H2Ohio initiative in Montgomery County.  Paul pokes a sleeping bear when he tries to draw out Andrew’s political feelings.  Let it be know that this will never become a political show!  Enjoy!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public! Zach needs no introduction into the show and we got right into it from the start!  This was a really fun conversation with Zach because I had the opportunity to hang out with Zach this past July at a Tethrd Teach-N-Train Tour event in Iowa.  It was awesome to see him interact with people that attended the event and we had the chance to catch up afterwards.  Some of the topics in today’s episode were from that conversation and I knew I wanted Zach to come on and dive deeper into those for the listeners and have him pick up where he left off!

To start things off in the podcast Zach mentions briefly what his first hunt is going to be and where!  This then caused us to go down a rabbit hole of what gear adjustments he either already has made or will make for that trip and the rest of the season.  Those of you that have followed the podcast know I love talking to individuals about their gear!  After this topic Zach shares how his whitetail scouting philosophy has evolved over the last few years and what his objectives are!  I loved this part because Zach shares how to read sign correctly to hunt THAT sign NOW and not being married to a specific spot. He really goes deep into this topic and I personally took a lot away from this part and I believe you will too!  It truly was great to get this information out.  Some stories were shared as well that go along with this topic.  We wrap up the podcast with chatting about how to manage your mentality during the hunting season.  We all know those down times come during the season and Zach shares his thoughts on it and what he does to keep that positive mindset going during the season!   This was a total blast to record and I hope you like it!  Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! One thing most people just don't realize about Oklahoma is how diverse it is. Today's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast highlights one of the lesser known habitats in Oklahoma, the mountains that dominate the South Eastern portion of the state. Michael Harrell grew up in those mountains, and today hosts a successful hunting show called Surrender Outdoors. On this week's episode, Michael and John discuss all the challenges a person faces when trying to hunt the big mature whitetails that call this area home. Many people are drawn to this area for the rugged landscape and large bucks that dwell within it, but Michael assures anyone interested that it is not for the faint of heart!

Michael and John cover a lot of the usual hunting topics, but from a mountain whitetail perspective. It's pretty hard to grow a foodplot on rocks, and with such drastic elevation changes, thermals often trump wind. John and many Oklahomans have the headache of dealing with hogs, but have you ever tried to keep a black bear off your bait pile? This episode is as unique as the terrain it covers, and Michael does a great job of teaching people what he has learned in his many years of hunting this remote and beautiful landscape!

In this podcast Todd Shippee (Empire Land Management) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the significance of water, waterholes, drought and how to establish better tactics around deer hunting. Todd dives into the world of waterholes and Jon details the habitat side of water. Todd explains how to handle drought in your area and strategies surrounding food plots. Jon and Todd discuss the benefits of water and property layout, as well as nutritional demands of deer. Jon and Todd discuss the negatives of not buying property with water.

Jon discusses the volume of water required to support food plots and Todd provides examples of how he supplements crops that lack water because of weather. Jon and Todd compare vegetation and water resources and what becomes a priority to deer, especially during hunting season. Todd details where he considers putting ponds and waterholes on his client’s properties. Todd explains other reasons deer are drawn to water sources.

Todd suggests a certain type of waterhole that creates instantaneous and higher usage by deer. Todd discusses how to install a waterhole. Jon details locations he prefers to locate waterholes and why in the Eastern United States waterholes are not as big of a trend as in the Midwest or Western part of the country.  Todd explains how to maintain waterholes and tricks he uses that are simple. Todd discusses adding supplements to waterholes to support deer and other animals. Todd explains putting in wildlife scrapes and a planting strategy that will be highly attractive to deer.

On this episode of Huntavore, pressure builds as season openers draw near, and Nick is presented with an opportunity to hunt elk in Montana.  The combination of exciting new experiences along with adventure in a brand new environment builds a pressure of anxiousness, nervousness and excitement.  Speaking of pressure, One of Nick’s tasks this week is to turn heavily worked venison cuts into easy bags of shredded goodness that can help with midweek meal prep.  Seal up those valves, pressure is about to build on this episode of Huntavore.

With 13 days left (at the time of this recording) before a group a hunting buddies and myself head out to Montana.  This will be a lot of firsts for me; first hunt out of state, first hunt for elk, first hunt from a truck/backpack.  Even with all the preparations and training, and conditioning I feel the pressure of the unknown.  It’s an exciting pressure, thrill of adventure, yet the daunting thoughts of what’s next, and what should I expect are ever present.  (Side note). After I recorded this, a practice session with the bow helped my anxiety.

Along with returning safely, I’m ok with either outcome; no elk, amazing backpacking trip, or we get elk and bring home glorious meat.

Now to bring things back around to meat.  One of Nick’s tasks is to prepare a batch of shredded venison that can be used in the months ahead.  Loading up the instapot and seasoning with salt, pepper, and garlic will produce a great tasting base shredded veni, for a whole number of dishes. Vac these into 1lb bags and back to the freezer.  Because they are cooked and packed with the drippings makes for a quick warm up final add of seasoning toward whatever you want to make.

A dish that I will do in my enameled dutch oven will be Hank’s Veni Barbacoa, recipe here:

How to Plan Your Hunting Access

Whitetail

We’re now coming to the end of August. Food plots are planted, stands are hung, and the cameras are in the field doing their work. Are you forgetting anything? One often overlooked part of deer hunting is access. Many hunters pay little to no attention to how they access their properties or their stands, figuring the quickest way from point A to point B is a straight-line. But bullet proof access, or at least really good access, is one of the most critical things when it comes to upping your odds of taking a mature buck.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about accessing difficult properties and stand locations. Dan hunts on permission properties in Iowa that are often difficult to access without alerting deer. Add to this that these properties often receive pressure from other hunters taking the easy way in and out, and you quickly realize just how intentional Dan needs to be with his access. Dan covers creative access means like bikes and boats, using terrain to your advantage, and how he plans to stay undetected on a new piece of ground he just gained permission on this year.

On today's podcast episode I have Shane Simpson on as a guest. While Shane has hunted a ton of different public hunting properties over the years, in the past two years he's begun a focus to try and learn a new, large piece with the intent to build a library of information and continue to focus on it for years to come. It's somewhat similar to what I've done on a couple properties. So the episode focuses mainly on the multiyear strategy to learn as much as you can each year while also having realistic expectations about what can be achieved each step of the way. We cover summer scouting, spring scouting, trail cameras, talking with other local hunters, focusing on rut vs bed hunting, the fall shift, and more.

We also touch on some of the tracking data collected from over 150 deer recoveries with Shane's dog Callie. Shane and a friend of his had distilled the information down to determine what factors for broadhead and shot style led to the highest chance of recovery along with what some of the key findings were for order of operations with grid searching.

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with Zach Schroeder, a Minnesota native who’s passion for playing football had to take a back seat to his love for the outdoors.

Zach is a 22 year old outdoorsman that grew up in the small town of Paynesville, MN. Zach has been hunting since he was 5 years old, it started with a bow for his birthday and then his first bb gun which he used to chase chipmunks with on his grandma's property.  Before long he started tagging along on deer, turkey and duck hunts with his dad. Zach had a lot of success in the woods from age 11-14 and then football started and hunting got pushed aside. Zach and his buddies tried to get every bit of hunting in while they weren’t on the field but it was limited to Saturday and Sunday after games. Now that Zach is in college he decided to quit football to give himself more time to go hunting.  Zach and Dan discuss the transition from sports to the outdoors and the preparation that is going into Zach’s first western hunt.
