On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by PA's very own Average Jack Archery - Nate Sellers.  A lot has transpired since Nate's last appearance on the show.  Nate has transitioned into the outdoor industry full time between his pro shop and also working for Huntworth gear.  We discuss this new journey and what his next goals are; one of which is being more competitive in target archery.

We discuss the growth and lack thereof in the sport of archery.  There was a time many local clubs had high levels of competitive archers.  Today many are barely holding on; what happened?  Those people who have stuck around have found themselves with the greatest archery technology to ever exist.  This has shortened the gap to proficiency and increased the level of competition that's still present.  We discuss what separates a good shooter from a great shooter.  Last, we discuss involving new shooters and getting folks started on a good note with a bow in hand.  This is an all around dynamite archery episode - get your bow and shoot in this nice weather!

Oklahoma Outdoors - Traditional Bowhunting

Bowhunting

Gear

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast John hosts traditional bowhunter Nathan Lattimer. Nathan grew up hunting with a compound bow, killing his first deer at only 12 years old. After years of hunting and taking several nice bucks, he began to feel some of the challenge slipping away. Looking to shake things up, he gave his compound bow to his son and picked up a Bear recurve and never looked back. Nathan doesn't claim to be an expert at traditional archery, but his journey into hunting and being successful with his recurve is a great story of determination.

John and Nathan start out by talking about some of the obvious differences between compound and traditional hunting. Next, Nathan talks about his mindset going into the woods. John asks about his "standards" and if they changed after limiting himself to trad gear. John then asks Nathan to talk about some of the things he has learned that would translate back to hunting with a compound if he were to switch again for some reason.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman, Dan talks with Aaron Olson from Next Step outdoors about his progression as a hunter and to hear how the 2023 season turned out.

Growing up in the picturesque landscapes of Northern Michigan, Aaron Olsen discovered a love for the great outdoors early on. At the age of 12, he began bowhunting whitetail deer, honing his skills and building a deep connection with nature. During his college years, Aaron dedicated much of his time to playing college basketball, immersing himself in the sport. However, post-college, he reignited his passion for deer hunting, taking it to new levels of enthusiasm.

In 2017, Aaron took a significant step by founding the "Next Step Outdoors" YouTube channel. This platform became his canvas to share the knowledge he gained over the years, aiming to assist fellow hunting enthusiasts and expedite their learning curve. Just over a year ago, fueled by a strong desire to live his passion, Aaron made the courageous decision to leave his full-time corporate job and fully commit to building the channel. Since then, he's been on an exciting journey, traveling the country in pursuit of his hunting dreams and sharing the thrill of the chase with a growing community of like-minded individuals.

Harvesting a bear within a lifetime in Pennsylvania is an accomplishment by most hunter's standards.  However, doing so in regularity degrades the theory many say to a person's success - luck.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Ryan Hausman.  Ryan has harvested a bear the last five years in a row with rifle, muzzleloader, and archery equipment.  One of his bears topped out at 615 lbs field dressed!

This episode revolves all around Ryan's stories and experiences.  There is nothing lacking from the entertainment department in this episode.  Some of the situations Ryan has found himself have turned into a rodeo.  But there is also a lot to take away and use within your own bear hunting schemes.  Patience, thoroughly scan thick cover, and place yourself where there is abundant food to name a few.  Hopefully Ryan's experience harvesting five bears helps you harvest one for yourself!  Check out the article that was written after Ryan harvested bear number five.

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Roger Samson (REP-Canada) discuss improved warm season grass varieties that are available to habitat managers.  Roger explains his experience and natural grasses. Roger goes over the history of Switchgrass and other varieties like Cave in Rock and Blackwell. Roger details the original focus of switchgrass and benefits of cattle, mining locations, reclamation, mulching, and biofuels.

Roger explains the evolution of switchgrass, prior switchgrass problems such as slow emergence, morphology, seedling vigor, etc. Roger worked to solve these issues, taking 30 years to establish a breeding program that created taller, erect, and quick emergence grasses. Roger and Jon discuss wildlife uses and the benefits to our soil, and soil habitat.

Roger explains the advanced developed varieties of switchgrass, RC Big Rock and RC Tecumseh, and the benefits compared to prior varieties. Roger explains the differences in physical characteristics and the purpose behind each, and what varieties would be adapted to specific site conditions (rain, heat, etc.).  Jon and Roger dialogue about developing plants that can stand taller, more erect, and withstand ice and snow loads.

Roger discusses new planting methods and a new variety of big bluestem variety that will soon be in the market. Roger details specifics on plant spacing and why solid seeding stands may not be the best option. Roger discusses options for planting that provides ideal spacing for ground birds (turkey).

Roger discusses the cost variances of switchgrass versus other options like miscanthus, specifically miscanthus giganteus. Roger explains the performance variances versus miscanthus and the morphology as compared to other non-native plants. Roger details all the benefits of switchgrass why these next generation varieties outcompete other grass types. One thing that makes Oklahoma so unique is its wide variety of game animals. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John talks with Keith Hagen of Southern Plains Taxidermy about hunting Oklahoma mule deer. Keith grew up hunting whitetails like most of us, but after spending some time chasing mule deer in western Oklahoma and Texas, they have become a huge part of his yearly hunting routine. Keith strictly hunts mule deer with a bow, making it all the more challenging.

Keith and John go over some of the differences in mule deer behavior, and the differences in hunting them versus whitetails. Keith talks about his equipment and what he thinks is important for specifically hunting Oklahoma mule deer as opposed to states further west. Keith also uses his experience as a taxidermist to give some pointers on field care for your trophy if you plan to get it mounted, and some good and bad strategies for getting your animal out in the sandy brush country of the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Bowhunting

This week's episode on Michigan Wild is with David (DJ) Riley. David is the co-host of The Fall Podcast with Arron Bleise and he loves chasing whitetails with his bow. Even though David and Nate both love targeting big mature whitetails they explain how they are more than just big buck killers. Not being complacent and striving to become better bowhunters transitions to hunting higher age class deer. However David has an all or nothing approach and realizes how much effort it takes each year. David does find success through scouting, being mobile in the fall, and always being a student of the game.

Overall a top notch episode with an even better guest!

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman is quite a bit different from normal.  Mitch rides solo and just talks about life during the winter months.  To cut it truthfully, February sucks.  Not a lot is happening if you're a deer hunter, and the reality is most of us do not have the ability to devote a lot of time to hunting, considering the months of neglect other things in life get while hunting season goes throughout fall.

Most shows are doing a great job of keeping the fire lit for the upcoming season.  Mitch envies them, because for many it's everything we have to keep scraping by sanely this time of year!   Mitch reflects on how the Pennsylvania Woodsman began, and discusses the difficulty and frustration experienced along the way.  That begs the question, why is it here and where is it going?  Don't worry, this episode isn't all doom and gloom.  Just the reality that sometimes things get hard!  So if February has been tough on you, you're not alone.

On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by Kevin Reese of Pulsar and Jeff Murray from Sightmark. We open the episode diving into thermal optics and the explosion in the outdoor scene over the last few years. A huge push came from predator hunting videos skyrocketing in popularity on YouTube, Instagram, and other venues. Predator and hog hunting gave outdoorsmen a way to utilize their year long hunting leases by giving hunters something to do during the off-season plus a way to keep the predator population in control. Make sure to tune into this episode presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about thermal optics from the view of Kevin and Jeff!

Closing out we dive into how much thermal optics have changed over the years. It wasn’t that long ago when thermal optics used to weigh more than your firearm did. Today’s thermal technology has shrunk dramatically which allows thermal hunters to be way more mobile than in days past. We discuss the difference between digital night vision and thermal, with Kevin’s opinion that almost everyone who tries thermal never wants to go back! While thermal and night vision alone are not cheap to get into, one of the good things is most of the optics if you invest in a good product truly do hold their value for when you want to upgrade in the future. On today’s show with GunBroker.com, we’re at SHOT Show joined by Louie Tuminaro, aka The Gunfather. Starting out Logan dives into the background of Louie’s restoration business, which you can see in episodes of the Outdoor Channel series, The Gunfather. Starting out on his show, Louie did a ton of Colt restorations, enough to the point that it caught the attention of Colt which has led them to being an Authorized Colt Service and Restoration Center! Louie gives us a rundown of what exactly they do under “restoration,” his biggest priority is doing the right service for people even if that means turning down a restoration on a beautiful firearm because it would be better suited left in the condition sent to him. Make sure to listen in to this episode Presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about Louie and The Gunfather: Restorations!

Next up, Louie dives into the process of restoring a gun to right-off-the-line, brand new condition! He covers the entire process from sanding in the right direction, to sourcing the parts that takes the firearm back to day one condition. We have a discussion on where he sources parts, why he sources the original parts, and how much of a difference it makes doing a complete date period restoration. We discuss the values of firearms such as the Colt 1911 in different states, including modified and completely restored. You may be surprised at just how much the values vary depending on what state the firearm is in at the time. Louie nails the values directly on the head with how they differ from one to the other.

Closing out, we discuss using laser engraving during restoration. Logan cringed a bit when he first saw a laser engraver going on a firearm restoration, however Louie discusses how his business uses them versus using roll marks to restore the firearm. Louie emphasizes how he and his business really pour their all into the restorations they do, with the customer’s happiness being the absolute end goal. On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by James Zandstra of The Fair Chase Podcast.
This past fall, James went on an epic adventure, hunting a Moose in BC, Canada. On top of
that, determined to bring the whole moose back to his own freezer here in Michigan, all by
driving. While finding and shooting the moose was one way up the mountain, getting the prize
back home is the way down. If you are thinking about a bountiful long distance meat hunt, then
this is the episode for you. Lots of heavy hauling on this episode of Huntavore.
James shares his experience of hunting moose in British Columbia. He discusses the
preparations he made for the hunting season and the planning involved in going on a moose
hunt. James also talks about the challenges of transporting the moose meat back home and the
process of processing the moose. He shares an exciting encounter with a grizzly bear and
reflects on the overall hunt. James concludes by recommending future hunts and the joy of
sharing the moose meat with others. James discusses his experience making sausage from
deer meat and shares his recipe. He also talks about his love for charcuterie and recalls a
memorable podcast episode with a charcuterie board. James then mentions his involvement in
creating hunting memes and his use of a recurve bow.
Takeaways: Proper planning and preparation are essential for a successful hunting season.
Transporting and processing the meat after a hunt can be challenging but rewarding.
Encounters with wildlife, such as grizzly bears, add excitement and adventure to the hunting
experience. Sharing the meat with others is a fulfilling way to enjoy the fruits of a successful
hunt. Making sausage from wild game meat can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Charcuterie boards can be a creative and impressive way to showcase homemade cured
meats. Creating hunting memes can be a fun way to engage with the hunting community on

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by PA hunter Howie Miller.  Howie works his tail off in and out of the field to make the most of his time in the woods.  Howie reflects on the 2023 grind of a season where he played cat and mouse with a dandy buck throughout the fall.  Howie lives in the southern half of the state, but chooses to hunt as much as possible around his camp in the northern portion of PA.  This creates challenges when hunting deer that are not resident to your living quarters.

Howie wrapped his tag around a stud buck during the first week of the Pennsylvania rifle season.  Thrilled to no end, we reflect on the story, successes, and lessons learned throughout a satisfying fall.  Lastly, we discuss a new journey which began late last summer; managing a newly purchased property.  Howie has as much enjoyment working in his own dirt as he does scouting public land.  We discuss the new challenges and goals he has moving forward into the next season.  Thanks for tuning in!

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of habitat consulting and real estate for hunters with Greg, a seasoned professional who has made a name for himself by helping landowners transform their properties into prime hunting grounds. Greg's expertise extends beyond the conventional role of a realtor, as he actively engages in the design and enhancement of properties to meet the unique goals of his clients, particularly in the pursuit of whitetail deer.

Throughout the conversation, Greg shares his success stories and insights into the art of scouting, emphasizing the importance of considering factors such as timing, pressure, and postseason signs to decipher deer movement patterns. Listeners gain valuable tips on how deer adapt to pressure, often seeking refuge in unexpected areas, showcasing the adaptability of these elusive creatures.

The episode delves into advanced hunting strategies, exploring topics like thermal hubs and buck bedding, with a special focus on the growing trend of thermal hubs in recent years. Greg sheds light on the significance of late October setups and how a well-informed approach to scouting during this period can significantly boost hunting success.

Greg emphasizes the importance of prioritizing principles over tactics, explaining how applying fundamental principles to individual situations yields superior results. The conversation also takes a philosophical turn as Greg encourages hunters to savor the experience, emphasizing the limited opportunities one has in the pursuit of their passion.

This episode is not just a guide to improving hunting skills but also an exploration of the joy and fulfillment found in the pursuit of whitetails, with valuable insights from a seasoned habitat consultant and realtor.

The Difference Between Ag Ground & Big Woods Bucks

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan interviews upstate New York resident Justin Taylor about the difference between hunting ag ground and big woods deer. Justin explains that hunting big woods bucks is not easy and takes a certain skill set to get within shooting range of a big buck. In northern New York, Justin tells us that 130 class buck is a big deal. Back in the late 1800's homesteaders planted apple trees near their homes, now, when scouting for places to hunt, Justin looks for these old homesteads and the apple trees that remain. The guys also break down big woods deer behavior, how they move through the terrain, and of course food sources.

In the BS portion of this episode, the guys share their thoughts abut the direction we are going with hunting, and how hunting is becoming a pay to play activity. Greed for big horns, and more acres per hunter resulting in over populated public, are causing many of us to struggle finding access for our hunting future. Enjoy and share!
