A Kentucky Boy's Pennsylvania Elk Hunting Experience

Elk
Strategy
Whitetail

Hunting elk east of the Mississippi River is arguably one of the greatest conservation success stories in North America.  While the herds seen today in Pennsylvania are actually Rocky Mountain Elk transferred from western states, it's still a thrill to see and hear this species roam the state.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch and Robby chat with Jacob Coons about his recent elk hunting trip to the Keystone State.

Jacob is driven to the challenge of hard-earned DIY hunting for western game but is also allured by the unique hunting opportunity for elk in eastern states.  He drew a late season bull tag for the 2021-2022 season and was fortunate to connect with the trophy of a lifetime.  Jacob shares with us all of his homework to prepare for this tag and what he learned throughout the entire experience.  You will likely learn something about elk hunting PA you never knew, as Jacob's attention to detail is superb!

This is going to be the last episode of our Turkey series for 2022 on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. We've really enjoyed talking about what Adam calls "The most glorious winged creature God put on the earth". This week we're going to close out with the final chapter of Parker's single season slam, as he chases merriams turkeys in Wyoming & Nebraska. It's long been said that a hunter is only as good as how he responds in the face of adversity. Typically, the merriams is one of the easier sub-species of wild turkey to hunt. However, this trip was going to prove to be a tough one. Listen along as Parker shares the story of this western turkey hunt!

Wisconsin Turkey Double

Public Land
Turkey
Strategy

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett talks about his recent weekend trip to hunt public land in WI in which he shot two birds on back to back mornings. For the first bird, terrain layout and tree type played a massive role in the setup, because the bird appeared to be roosting in a place where his most likely travel after fly-down was likely to be in one specific direction. The second bird required a bit more trial and error to try and locate and roost, but the set up was driven more by prior experience hunting that area than it was strictly looking at the map. Garrett also talks about the opportunities for over-the-counter late season tags in WI and choosing between smaller areas with higher turkey populations versus larger areas with lower turkey densities.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down a hunting scenario with a listener who found single buck bed while scouting public land. The guys get in to an in-depth strategy discussion about how todays guest plans on hunting this bed. In this strategy session they also break down the food sources, where to set up an ambush point in his bed to feed pattern, and how to access that ambush point. They also iron out the details about the best time of year to put this plan in to motion and if he feels he will have a higher success rate on a morning or evening hunt. Whitetail

In this podcast Kenny Kane (Generations Forestry) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the blending of forest management practices and wildlife improvement. Both small and large properties landowners are challenged with managing their properties and balancing optimized deer habitat with sustainable timber management. In this podcast Kenny and Jon breakdown how to process these topics and the contemplated areas we need to assess to get the best prescription possible. Issues related to high graded forest are discussed as many landowners experience the pitfalls with mismanaged timber from the past. Kenny explains the best techniques when you are dealing with cleaning up and restoring areas that are high graded.

Kenny’s process of evaluating forested areas from understanding the concerns to making decisions will help landowners feel empowered to think ahead and begin to build a superb deer hunting property. Jon and Kenny provide rules of thumb and techniques to make informed decisions as landowners undergo the transformation of building their hunting property and deciding what trees to cut or leave. Kenny explains the impacts certain landowners may experience when markets for certain timber are not in demand. Jon provides a recommendation of what to do next when you are trying to understand market demands.

Kenny explains how to balance quality and poor timber situations and how to look toward the future. Jon explains his techniques for timber stand improvement. Kenny provides a major takeaway on how to invest in your property and what species we sometimes overlook when we are thinking about wildlife. Kenny and Jon discuss the benefits of improvement and the short and long term thinking that can get landowners in a better position for the future.

For many, the question “How do I go about buying hunting land?” is a daily occurrence. Most outdoorsmen and women dream of owning their own little piece of paradise to hunt, fish, and enjoy the great outdoors. But what if you’ve purchased land, and the dream isn’t so dreamy anymore? What if the commute has become too much? What if the property taxes are just more than you want to pay? What if you want to upsize or just find an all around better property? How should you approach selling your land?

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh is joined by Al Wisnefski of Land & Legacy Group about selling land. Al has been selling property for almost a decade, and he has helped many landowners through the difficult decision to sell their property. While not everyone is looking to sell their land right now, this episode is a great conversation for all those interested in rural real estate. Al shares his entire process from beginning to end. If you’re looking to sell, Al lays out all the things you need to consider as you bring your land to market. If you’re hoping to buy land one day, this conversation will help you know what all is going through the sellers mind. No matter who you are, you’ll learn something from this one!

Removing Predators for Better Turkey and Deer Hunting

Turkey
Predator Hunting
Trapping

As we reach the halfway point of spring turkey season there are generally two separate conversations that emerge.  Either the success of a textbook turkey hunt, or a tangent about turkey populations being off.  If you find yourself in the latter half, pay attention!  This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Mike Dreibelbis about his journey into trapping nest raiders and fawn nabbers.  Mike found his passion for trapping later in his hunting career and began to hone his craft of targeting coyotes and nuisance predators.

Fur prices continue to fluctuate and the days of making money on a trap line are nearly over.  As the quality of habitat increases across the country for better deer and turkey hunting, naturally predator species will respond in a positive way.  Unless you're a diehard trapper yourself, it's possible that the increase in predators has an impact on the turkey (or deer) hunting in your neighborhood.  Mike's journey of learning to master this art is filled with a ton of knowledge that you may be able to apply in your area.  Hopefully this will fire you up to run a trapline this fall for future hunting, or consider inviting a trapper to come and help you out!

In this podcast Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the significance of chestnut trees and their benefit to wildlife. Tim details the history and science of chestnuts and how the landscape has changed as a result of the blight.  Previously, chestnuts provided an economic and wildlife benefit that is important to our country and is now missed with the current whitetail deer herd. The value of the chestnut tree is something we have sometimes forgotten and can be a game changer on the landscape. Listen to the podcast to further understand the benefits and how this tree can benefit your deer herd.

Jon discusses his secrets to designing a property with chestnut trees in mind. Tim discusses the benefits of chestnuts versus acorns; the answer may surprise you!  Jon asks Tim about planting non-native chestnuts and the impact on the landscape. Both contributors discuss the type of chestnuts (native, non-native, hybrid and transgenic) and the benefits of each and how certain organizations are working toward supporting a transgenic tree on the landscape.  Jon discusses simple options to planting and how he approaches chestnuts and deer.

Tim discusses the best options going forward for those wanting to plant chestnut trees on their property, specifically the American chestnut. Tim and Jon break down the key factors for choosing chestnuts, and how to manage them on the landscape. Other important information and specifics as it relates to preferred soil type, environments and what not to do with chestnuts is explained in the podcast.

Jake utilizes a chainsaw, backpack blower and walk behind brush cutter to ensure his detailed plans are implemented and result led to success.

Jake and Jon discuss the most overlooked details that create failures when setting up a hunting property. On the properties Jake supports he explains how he setups travel corridors and how dealing with mother nature can be the most difficult impediment, limiting success of any work and improvements. Jake gets into the details on specific trail sizes, the shape and how layouts should look to enhance a hunting property.

Jake explains some of the key differences he experiences on his clients’ properties and Jon details some tricks he uses to help individuals work on portions of their property at a faster pace. Jake gives his secrets to figuring out bedding areas and exactly how he lays them out for the best utilization. This episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast is part two of Josh’s conversation with his dad, Brian. Brian grew up hunting the U.P. of Michigan in a traditional Northwoods deer camp. In the late 90s, Brian moved to Alabama. Eventually, he and Josh started hunting in Alabama and joined a hunting club.

While hunting clubs can provide a very positive experience, often times politics, secrecy, and competition can drown out camaraderie. In this episode, the guys discuss hunting in a traditional Alabama hunting camp and the transition to hunting the little slice of heaven Brian now calls home.

On the Missouri Woods & Water podcast this week, Nate and Micah get the chance to talk with Troy Goeckeritz about his show Hunt Warz. If you don't already know what it is, Hunt Warz is a show getting ready to start its 3rd season where the participants in it are drawn to compete with each other in each respective hunt.

When someone applies for Hunt Warz, they have a chance at winning one of fourteen different possible hunts for this season that includes everything someone might need from tags to gear. Hunters are given all the tools they need to succeed once drawn, which is another really cool aspect of this show. Chasing Everything with Dan Mathews

Whitetail
Big Game

On this episode of the Huntavore, Nick is joined by fellow Sportsman’s Empire Podcaster, Dan Mathews. Dan is the Host of the Nomadic Outdoorsman and Western Rookies. Together Nick and Dan talk about chasing everything. Rather than casting a deep net into one species, Dan casts a wide net to explore as many outdoor opportunities as possible. They cover hogs from a helicopter. Why is meat so important in your household?, and how Mountain Goat might not be on the top of Dan’s list to chase. This and much more on this episode of Huntavore.

Dan Mathews hails from Southern Missouri and grew up in Wisconsin. His drive for exploring the outdoors and passion for adventure has Dan hunting as much as he possibly can. Rather than wait for a particular season to open, Dan is always in search of the next season that opens, no matter the species. Dan finds that he gets an appreciation for more than just antler size, or body weight, but shares in the excitement of trying something completely new and experiencing hunting cultures across the whole United States.

Dan was recently on a helicopter hunt for feral hogs in Texas. Like a boy playing soldier, Dan unpacks the fun of using high tech firearms out the side of a flying helicopter. Nick pokes at some questions about how Dan feels about the advantage he had with the use of technology and if the excitement of fair chase was gone. His response reflected what ranchers and farmers were saying. These hogs have been doing untold amounts of damage to crops and to other wildlife, and even with these efforts of eradication, the hog numbers continue to bounce back to the point where the environment wouldn't support them. The ethics talk may include the hogs, but at the same time, ethics around wildlife and healthy habitats needs to include hog eradication.

These conversations lead into what meat means to Dan. Is it just food or is it something more? Dan’s freezer is a cornucopia of different animals he’s harvested. Each package offers a renewed experience of the hunt and memories about the event. Also the appreciation of knowing where food comes from. When he asks his daughter where meat comes from, the answer isn't the store or butcher’s shop. It's from hunting.

Whitetail

We have a double header this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Roy Potter is the owner of Woods County Whitetails in western Oklahoma and this week he joins John to talk about the wonderful hunting accommodations his outfit has to offer. From a literal 5 star chef and comfortable lodge, to the sprawling private ranch with comfortable blinds, food plots, and feeders, Woods County Whitetails is your one stop shop for top notch whitetail hunting. "You're going to see a lot of deer" is Roys promise to his guest, and they have taken some really nice bucks over the years also.

Part two of this episode is another project of Roys that was spawned out of his outfitting business, and that is the Okie Hides blinds. Roy had trouble finding the right blind that could stand up to the elements western Oklahoma could throw at them, while also being comfortable and having all the features he was looking for. Eventually Roy took it upon himself, and he and his team set out to make the perfect blind for their needs. What they came up with is a large elevated blind with a pitched roof and windows in all the right places. So check out this episode and their website to learn all about Woods County Whitetails and Okie Hides blinds.

On today's episode, Garrett dives into his plan for filling a traditional tag this year, along with the detailed steps to build confidence along the way. In the past, Garrett has hunted with a traditional bow and even built a bow to hunt with. However, due to confidence and repeatability issues had largely kept it just "for fun" the past couple of years. But that doesn't have to be the case. There are many fantastic resources and training tools available to the modern archer, and there is no reason you can't build yourself up to the point where you have total control and confidence in your shot, despite the weapon of choice. In addition to talking through and reviewing some of those tools, Garrett also talks about the focus areas and how they'll change over the next several months leading up to the season.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with a major league lineup of guests from America’s Dairyland. Paul Wagner, Shaun Ridder and Erik Tasker join Dan to talk about everything from bass fishing and whitetail deer hunting to playing in the MLB and winning CMA Broadcast awards.

Paul Wagner is a current sports radio host and former Milwaukee Brewers & Pittsburg Pirates Pitcher. He may be the old guy in the crew but "Wags" has hunted a lot of the midwest and calls the western Milwaukee suburbs home. Wags hunts deer and turkey and loves chasing Muskie on the Chippewa flowage.

Shaun Ridder is the guy that makes it all happen. First and foremost a fisherman, he entered his first kayak fishing tourney this year and has recently been converted to bowhunting. He’s a lover of all things outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Ridder is the “techy” person of the trio. He is also attempting to take his first turkey with a bow this year.

Erik Tasker is a guy who didn't get his hunting license until he was 21. That didn’t slow him down at all though. For the past 15 years he has been a diehard bowhunter. Tasker also loves joining the orange army for the annual gun deer hunt and chasing after bass from a kayak. He got his passion from his dad and uncles that have hunted the same public land in Eau Claire county for 45 years.

Corn, Soybean, and No-till Food Plots

Habitat

Even though snow and cold weather has set planting back in the northeast slightly, planting season is right around the corner. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we are discussing all things summer food plots. First, we touch base on last minute clover establishment and maintenance before diving into the main topic of corn and soybean planting. Like hunting, food plots are a combination of science and art. We begin chatting about all things technical such as planting populations, weed management, soil preparation, fertility, even wide row corn with inner-seeded greens. Even with all the correct tools and preparation, we still have to ask the question, “do you really need corn and soybeans?” This leads us to a philosophical conversation about tuning your food plot programs to your surrounding neighborhood, property size, and local deer density.

Last, we can’t help but discuss no-till food plots. To start, no-till food plots have many more advantages over conventional planting with tillage. However, there is a learning curve which requires a little more planning and management to be successful. No-till planting is not something that can be mastered overnight, but this episode can help prepare you for the long run! Every planting season is a new learning experience and an opportunity to provide better attraction for wildlife. Plus, it is one step closer to being in the tree this fall.

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks to 3 “brothers” from Wyoming about all the things they love to chase in their great state. Tanner Varndell, Chase Galley and Colton Jones join Dan to talk about everything from hunting antelope on the plains to chasing high country mule deer.

Chase has always dreamt of filming his hunts and to try and make it "big time". Recently Chase’s dreams have shifted to helping others chase their outdoor adventures. Chase loves to bow hunt elk, and feels that there’s nothing more exciting than hearing bulls bugle in the morning.

Tanner gets his kicks by chasing high-country mule deer. Whether he is the one making the stock or just watching the deer to see what they do, finding and locating the giant old grey ghosts of the alpines is like a drug to him.

Colton is the man behind the video and photography. Colton is an experienced filmmaker and photographer. He has traveled to Japan to compete in competitions and is an avid outdoorsman. Colton had always wanted to start hunting big game but it wasn’t until he met Tanner and Chase while working at Sportsman’s that he truly got hooked. Tanner, Chase and Colton hope that their passion for the outdoors helps others get the ambition to tie up their boots, throw on a pack and experience life in the outdoors.

Using Terrain Features to Get on Deer with Dan Johnson

In recent years, hunting terrain features has garnered tons of attention in the whitetail hunting world. Benches, saddles, draws, ridges, these words are often thrown around. But are we really capitalizing on them and how they influence the way whitetails flow through the properties we hunt?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh is joined by Dan Johnson, host of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, to talk all things terrain features. Terrain features play a key role in Dan’s hunting strategy whether he’s chasing whitetails at home or other big game out west. For Dan, the right terrain feature at the right time of year is just as, if not more important, than hunting fresh sign. In this episode Dan shares some of his favorite terrain features, how they play into his whitetail hunting strategy, and what to consider when hunting them. Enjoy!

Few places capture a deer hunter’s imagination quite like a northwoods deer camp. At deer camp, giant bucks may be every hunter’s dream, but the friendships are what really makes the experience.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh interviews his dad, Brian Sutton. Brian grew up hunting Jones camp in the U.P. of Michigan in the heyday of deer camp culture. Welcome to part two of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast mini series with the Oklahoma branch of the National Wild Turkey Federation. This week's guest is biologist Annie Farrell. Annie covers a large area including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska which means she has seen a little bit of everything. For the purpose of this episode however, John and Annie stick to mostly Oklahoma terrain and statistics.

The conversation starts off by going back in time a little bit, discussing turkeys as a native Oklahoma bird, their decline, and restocking efforts that have grown into the flocks we see today. From there the two cover topics all across the board including Rio grande vs Eastern subspecies and the habitat needed by each of them, polt survival, recent population declines, and what is being done about it. Annie also gives private land owners some things they can do to help more wild turkeys survive on the landscape.

Turkey

We open this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman with a quick message from Pastor Phil Thomas as we celebrate Good Friday and this Easter weekend. Afterwards, Mitch and Robby have a conversation with Matt Dale from Dale’s Outdoors. Matt has a YouTube channel dedicated solely to educating people to be better turkey hunters. Matt does not take the same approach as other hunting channels where kill content is the main priority, in fact, he does not have near the amount of hunting content as educational videos.

More often than not, educational content for hunting other big game species like whitetails and black bear revolve around finding food, sign, bedding, etc. Why is it that when spring turkey hunting comes into conversation, sign and food are often a secondary topic? Calling, decoys, and blind location strategies are usually discussed the most, and while they are important it is not the “end-all be-all.” Many spring gobbler hunters gauge the quality of the spring season by the amount of gobbling and the responsiveness to calling they encounter. According to Matt, however, more turkeys are killed by sheer patience. For more of Matt’s turkey hunting knowledge, check out Dale Outdoors on YouTube – any turkey hunter can learn something from this 300+ course level turkey hunting information!
