Many of you know Travis "T-Bone" Turner from his hunting show the Bone Collector. Within the last couple year Travis has had to endure some life altering health issues resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Dan and Travis walk through those health issues and how they have have undoubtedly affected both his personal life and career. You might think that someone in his position might start feeling sorry for themselves, and he admittedly had some bad days, but as you will hear he has an awesome support group and has kept a positive state of mind.

And what would a conversation with a passionate deer hunter and land manager be without a dive in to the upcoming season and what his plans are now that he will have to think a little harder on how and where he hunts. This is another great episode with a passionate deer hunter who just loves the game he chases, the land they live one, and overall zest for life.

Today we're recapping our hot, miserable trip to hunt the Tennessee Velvet Hunt. Parker's joined by Jacob Emery, Taylor Philpot, Clay Harper & Jeremy Freeman to discuss the weekends events. This was truly an incredible experience from finding out the buck exists, making a game plan with a group of like-minded hunters, and then ultimately pulling the trigger on a true world class whitetail. Unlike most hunting stories, this isn't just an individual person who got to enjoy the experience. Instead, it's a team of people who were able to successfully pull of a "team hunt" in some incredibly harsh conditions.

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public! Zach needs no introduction into the show and we got right into it from the start!  This was a really fun conversation with Zach because I had the opportunity to hang out with Zach this past July at a Tethrd Teach-N-Train Tour event in Iowa.  It was awesome to see him interact with people that attended the event and we had the chance to catch up afterwards.  Some of the topics in today’s episode were from that conversation and I knew I wanted Zach to come on and dive deeper into those for the listeners and have him pick up where he left off!

To start things off in the podcast Zach mentions briefly what his first hunt is going to be and where!  This then caused us to go down a rabbit hole of what gear adjustments he either already has made or will make for that trip and the rest of the season.  Those of you that have followed the podcast know I love talking to individuals about their gear!  After this topic Zach shares how his whitetail scouting philosophy has evolved over the last few years and what his objectives are!  I loved this part because Zach shares how to read sign correctly to hunt THAT sign NOW and not being married to a specific spot. He really goes deep into this topic and I personally took a lot away from this part and I believe you will too!  It truly was great to get this information out.  Some stories were shared as well that go along with this topic.  We wrap up the podcast with chatting about how to manage your mentality during the hunting season.  We all know those down times come during the season and Zach shares his thoughts on it and what he does to keep that positive mindset going during the season!   This was a total blast to record and I hope you like it!  Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! When you think outdoors/deer hunting podcasts, a couple of the OG’s, Mark Kenyon and Dan Johnson, sat down with the guys to talk deer hunting.  The conversation starts with a little history lesson in the Wired to Hunt legacy, with Dallas and a young Mark. Paul and Andrew then take to the escouting world, and attempt to run down a location with Mark and Dan.  Poor Mark and Dan had to work hard to deal with a couple of incompetent hunters. The conversation was a good one with more to come in the future.

Paul and Andrew have had a busy past week.  Andrew’s recovering from his knee operation, but back in the saddle soon.  Paul is gearing up for his opening days of duck hunting season.  Both guys spent some time at Vance’s over the weekend at the Tethrd teach and train event.  The event was spectacular and very well done.  News around the state covers the new Cadet class, status of Indian Lake’s unwanted vegetation, and a new H2Ohio initiative in Montgomery County.  Paul pokes a sleeping bear when he tries to draw out Andrew’s political feelings.  Let it be know that this will never become a political show!  Enjoy!

One thing most people just don't realize about Oklahoma is how diverse it is. Today's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast highlights one of the lesser known habitats in Oklahoma, the mountains that dominate the South Eastern portion of the state. Michael Harrell grew up in those mountains, and today hosts a successful hunting show called Surrender Outdoors. On this week's episode, Michael and John discuss all the challenges a person faces when trying to hunt the big mature whitetails that call this area home. Many people are drawn to this area for the rugged landscape and large bucks that dwell within it, but Michael assures anyone interested that it is not for the faint of heart!

Michael and John cover a lot of the usual hunting topics, but from a mountain whitetail perspective. It's pretty hard to grow a foodplot on rocks, and with such drastic elevation changes, thermals often trump wind. John and many Oklahomans have the headache of dealing with hogs, but have you ever tried to keep a black bear off your bait pile? This episode is as unique as the terrain it covers, and Michael does a great job of teaching people what he has learned in his many years of hunting this remote and beautiful landscape!

Pressure Cooker of Emotions

On this episode of Huntavore, pressure builds as season openers draw near, and Nick is presented with an opportunity to hunt elk in Montana.  The combination of exciting new experiences along with adventure in a brand new environment builds a pressure of anxiousness, nervousness and excitement.  Speaking of pressure, One of Nick’s tasks this week is to turn heavily worked venison cuts into easy bags of shredded goodness that can help with midweek meal prep.  Seal up those valves, pressure is about to build on this episode of Huntavore.

With 13 days left (at the time of this recording) before a group a hunting buddies and myself head out to Montana.  This will be a lot of firsts for me; first hunt out of state, first hunt for elk, first hunt from a truck/backpack.  Even with all the preparations and training, and conditioning I feel the pressure of the unknown.  It’s an exciting pressure, thrill of adventure, yet the daunting thoughts of what’s next, and what should I expect are ever present.  (Side note). After I recorded this, a practice session with the bow helped my anxiety.

Along with returning safely, I’m ok with either outcome; no elk, amazing backpacking trip, or we get elk and bring home glorious meat.

Now to bring things back around to meat.  One of Nick’s tasks is to prepare a batch of shredded venison that can be used in the months ahead.  Loading up the instapot and seasoning with salt, pepper, and garlic will produce a great tasting base shredded veni, for a whole number of dishes. Vac these into 1lb bags and back to the freezer.  Because they are cooked and packed with the drippings makes for a quick warm up final add of seasoning toward whatever you want to make.

A dish that I will do in my enameled dutch oven will be Hank’s Veni Barbacoa, recipe here:

Whitetail

We’re now coming to the end of August. Food plots are planted, stands are hung, and the cameras are in the field doing their work. Are you forgetting anything? One often overlooked part of deer hunting is access. Many hunters pay little to no attention to how they access their properties or their stands, figuring the quickest way from point A to point B is a straight-line. But bullet proof access, or at least really good access, is one of the most critical things when it comes to upping your odds of taking a mature buck.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Dan Johnson about accessing difficult properties and stand locations. Dan hunts on permission properties in Iowa that are often difficult to access without alerting deer. Add to this that these properties often receive pressure from other hunters taking the easy way in and out, and you quickly realize just how intentional Dan needs to be with his access. Dan covers creative access means like bikes and boats, using terrain to your advantage, and how he plans to stay undetected on a new piece of ground he just gained permission on this year.

While Shane has hunted a ton of different public hunting properties over the years, in the past two years he's begun a focus to try and learn a new, large piece with the intent to build a library of information and continue to focus on it for years to come. It's somewhat similar to what I've done on a couple properties. So the episode focuses mainly on the multiyear strategy to learn as much as you can each year while also having realistic expectations about what can be achieved each step of the way. We cover summer scouting, spring scouting, trail cameras, talking with other local hunters, focusing on rut vs bed hunting, the fall shift, and more.

We also touch on some of the tracking data collected from over 150 deer recoveries with Shane's dog Callie. Shane and a friend of his had distilled the information down to determine what factors for broadhead and shot style led to the highest chance of recovery along with what some of the key findings were for order of operations with grid searching.

Zach had a lot of success in the woods from age 11-14 and then football started and hunting got pushed aside. Zach and his buddies tried to get every bit of hunting in while they weren’t on the field but it was limited to Saturday and Sunday after games. Now that Zach is in college he decided to quit football to give himself more time to go hunting.  Zach and Dan discuss the transition from sports to the outdoors and the preparation that is going into Zach’s first western hunt.

Last weekend John had the honor of leading a session at the National Wild Turkey Federation's deer conference in Oklahoma City. The conference was intended to help bring in and educate new hunters from across the state, and the turnout was very encouraging for the future of hunting! John decided why stop at only those who could attend though, so this week's episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast is all about gear. John will be going over all the essential gear a person needs to get out in the woods and confidently harvest a deer. For the non beginner listeners, this episode still has something for you. After John goes through the essentials, he runs down his entire gear list for the upcoming season. Bow, rifle, broadheads, binoculars, knife, treestands, popup blinds, and everything in between, he talks about why he bought it and if he would buy it again.

For John's talk, he broke the gear into three categories: Essential, Recommended, and nice to have. John is a firm believer that gear should never be the reason a person chooses not to hunt, and most people probably don't need nearly as much gear as television shows or advertisements would lead them to believe. Are binoculars nice to have, sure, but are they really essential? Listen to this week's podcast to hear John's take on binoculars and loads of other gear.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are chatting with Phil Holcombe about the Pennsylvania Bowhunters Festival.  Phil is now the third generation leading with his team of volunteers to make this event happen annually.  It is the oldest gathering of bowhunters in the world!  It's an opportunity for fellowship, comradery, archery shooting, networking, and just pure bowhunting fun!

Phil shares with us some of the history of the festival as it began with his Grandfather and Great Uncles over 60 years ago in Forksville, PA.  One of the most memorable parts of this shoot is the novelty running deer shoot, and Phil discusses the engineering occured to develop this attractive target!  There are also numerous courses throughout the fairgrounds that make the event too big to handle in a single day. Not to mention the food and vendors that are present every year.  This event is held annually in September and is something that is fun for the whole family.  Tune in to hear all about it, and check out pabowhunters.com for more information about the event and how you can join this year!

Much of the content of this podcast, and many others, is focused on getting you a shot opportunity on a whitetail deer. But once you've taken the shot, what now? There's good news and bad news here. The bad news is, once the shot is fired, you can't control anything about the flight of your chosen projectile, the reaction of the animal, or the quality of the hit. The good news is, after the shot is fired, there are a lot of things you can make sure to execute perfectly to give you the best odds of recovering your deer.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Shane Simpson about what to do after the shot and how to blood trail your deer. Shane is an avid hunter, and each fall, he undertakes lots of tracks with his dog Callie. Over the years, Shane has learned a thing or two about about blood trailing deer, like what you should do immediately after the shot, best practices when it comes to taking up the trail, and when to call in the help of a dog to track your deer. This episode is packed with info that will help you be more successful this fall.

If you’re not familiar with Shane, go check out his Youtube channel, Shane Simpson Hunting, where you can find videos of him tracking with Callie, his deer hunts, and a ton of turkey hunting content as well.

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Missouri native Levi Rightnowar about his passion for chasing America’s number one big game animal.

Levi is an avid hunter that has had a passion for the outdoors for as long as he can remember. He killed his first deer at 6 years old and has harvested at least one every year since. Levi has been sitting in the woods with his dad since 3 years old which is where the addiction for whitetail started for him. Even during turkey season Levi finds himself looking at travel routes, pinch points, and bedding for deer while walking around. Levi had spent his entire life having only hunted public land with the exception of a few rifle hunts on his grandparents 60 acre farm. Levi is a plumber by trade and his busy schedule keeps him out of the woods throughout the week but he hardly ever misses a weekend. Levi’s family has a small cabin in the middle of 4,000 acres of public land. Rifle season is like a holiday for him and his family. Levi and his friends recently started JAK’D outdoors and an outdoor podcast called The Relatable Outdoorsmen. Dan and Levi talk about everything Missouri has to offer.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Skip Sligh, owner of the Iowa Whitetail forum. The guys discuss what makes Iowa a great deer hunting state. Skip gives his raw and unfiltered opinion about some of the deer hunting rules and regulations that allow the Iowa deer herd thrive and for bucks to get to a higher age class. On the opposite side, Skip talks about some of the proposed regulations that would more than likely be a detriment to the heard like the introduction of crossbow hunting, non-resident land owner tag allocation, and always present fight with law makers, lobbyists, and special interest groups.

Iowa is the mecca for big bucks and outstanding deer hunting, if we start to mess with that equation, things will change, and unless you are a land owner hunting access will become harder and harder. Not to mention the slide in deer herd. This is an excellent episode, that may be hard to swallow for some of you. Are you happy with the rules and regulations in your state?

This week on the show Nate and Micah talk with returning guest Ren Witte about his 2021 season and his pursuit of a buck he nicknamed Tupac.  Usually hunting stories told are that of success, but Ren's pursuit of this buck last year had to be one of the biggest series of horrible events we have ever heard from one hunt, let alone an entire season's worth.  Ren had one thing after another go wrong as he tried pinning down this buck, and after one crazy or bad thing would happen to him and he was ready to move on to the next chapter, another bad thing would happen.  All of the things that happened to Ren during last season were all out of his control, and can make a hunter feel very discouraged and make hunting very aggravating, the exact opposite effect it's supposed to have on us hunters.  Ren's story is one that hopefully encourages the listener to keep a positive mindset and to just keep your head down and working, no matter how bad you think it may get.  Ren's year last year is proof that it can always be worse.  We want to thank Ren for coming on to talk about his horrid year in the pursuit of Tupac.  In the real hunting world it's not always rainbows and sunshine, sometimes it's just a big shit show.  Thanks for listening!

What to do with Roasts, Besides Roast

Cooking

Whitetail

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Greg Tubbs, co-host of Okayest Hunter and an avid venison consumer.  Together, they tackle a question Nick has been asked a lot lately; What do I do with these roasts, besides roast it? If this is you, prepare to put those large cuts to work for you, as we explore cooking methods that take you from low and slow to hot and fast, as the guys try to lay out some ideas that best serve the cut, and save it from a slow death of freezer burn.  Get ready to thaw out the big top round on this episode of Huntavore.

Greg Tubbs is co-host of Okayest Hunter Podcast, and a long time avid venison eater.  Greg grew up on the stuff along with everything his family hunted and fished.  Greg was a perfect candidate to join me on this discussion of “what to do with large roasting cuts”.  That’s easy, roast it.  However it’s not that simple.  Not all of us have the time or need that much roast all to once.  As seasons around the country prepare to open, freezers are being ransacked for the arrival of new meat.  Which brings us to using these large cuts.

Greg opens up with a rouladen, opening up the roast into a large flat sheet, spreading on a filling, rolling it back on itself and securing with string or toothpicks.  A slow cook and sear, followed by a slice across the grain has a fun pinwheel to serve.  If that doesn't wet the appetite with all the preparations, two easy routes would be to ground into burger or sliced thick, cross the grain for steaks.  Burgers and steak are easy for a Labor Day weekend along with a whole host of things to make throughout the winter.  One steak dish Nick’s like is a swiss steak recipe from his in-laws where instead of beef round comes venison bottom round.  Butterflied to make a double steak and tenderized (10” lodge skillet will do the trick).  Season with salt and pepper, get it browned on the outside, and let simmer in a pool of gravy or cream of mushroom soup.  Served alongside mashed potatoes and you got a rib sticker that will power you through those afternoon chores.  Next was several ideas where thin slices would be helpful; stir fry, philly cheese on a griddle, jerky.  If large cuts intimidate you, there is no shame in spreading it all out.  To close, Greg and Nick circle back to leaving the cuts whole.  A sunday roast is worth saving, and when made into pot roast cant be beat.  Pastrami or any type of brined/cured and smoked meat will please a hungry crowd and re-freeze quite well.

Today's whitetail hunters are becoming more and more mobile, and Out on a Limb is here to provide the gear folks need to make those split second moves as easy, quiet, and efficient as possible. Matt Garis joins the Oklahoma Outdoor Podcast this week to talk about their complete lineup of mobile gear and accessories. Matt and Out on a Limb started off making lightweight tree stands and climbing sticks, but have quickly made a name for themselves in the saddle hunting community with their rugged yet extremely light saddle platforms. All of Out on a Limbs products are machined and made right here in Oklahoma by passionate and experienced hunters, and if you get the opportunity to handle some of their products, the craftsmanship really shows. These stands and platforms are so lightweight it is almost an optical illusion when you pick them up, it just doesn't seem possible that they can be made out of metal.

After Matt and John finish the mobile gear talk, John dives into a little preseason hunt update. On his last trip out to the ranch he discovered the cows had destroyed everything, and he means everything. Luckily most of it was fairly easily fixed, and he got a little extra work done as well. He is preparing for his early season Nebraska hunt, and trying to finish up his preseason prep on the home place in Oklahoma.

In fact, there are some guys who seem to tag out on opening day, or close to it, with impressive consistency. What can we learn from guys like that?
