This week on the Ohio Outdoors podcast, the guys continue their discussion with Dr. Ed Ashby.

Dr. Ashby begins discussing his 12 factors for arrow penetration. The science in this episode is over the hosts heads, but hopefully you can learn a thing or two. A lot of the information presented is common knowledge, but Dr. Ashby puts it all into one list for simplicity. This is part 2 of the series, and will cover the first 6 factors of the list.

Island Paul is back and better than ever. A week of vacation and he’s ready to roll. Both guys have been out tuning arrows and getting things ready. Andrew’s fighting his target panic with a hinge release, but really might just need some Xanax. The hunting season is fast approaching, with just about 60 days left until Deer Archery around the state. The state fair begins this week from July 27- August 7. Lottery hunt applications are due July 31!!!

To date Travis has harvested two bulls and the desire he has for chasing elk is unmatched. Dan and Travis discuss everything from fishing the gulf to transitioning from southern deer to elk in the mountains.

In this podcast Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Ryan Audet (Client) discuss the journey of owning and transforming a hunting property. Ryan is a recent client located in Vermont that has gone through the consulting and implementation process with Jon, and his journey and know-how has allowed him to transform multiple properties he manages. Jon and Ryan discuss the importance of having a vision and being empowered to make changes.

Jon discusses the importance of long- or short-term objectives and setting goals that work toward an overall vision. Ryan discusses his ideas and philosophy and why he decided to hire a consultant. Jon explains why consulting is important to setting the stage to lay out a proper plan that will support goals. Ryan explains how he benefited from the onsite consulting and implementation work, and how he has taken the strategies and established his “Deer Lense” to make his small and large property turn into better future hunting property.

Jon discusses the empowerment mindset and how that will lead you down the road to push yourself to make changes to your property. Jon and Ryan discuss the tools required, Ryan’s mindset and how hard work and applying it to the property has already helped. Ryan explains what changes he has seen as a result of making changes to his properties.

Jon explains his Deer Lense and how to transform and level up food plots, timber and fields.  Jon and Ryan explain specific strategies for both small and large hunting properties. Ryan and Jon discuss the importance of social hubs on the landscape. Jon explains how to create better bedding areas. Jon demystifies the ideas around inside versus outside hunting properties. Jon explains doe and buck bedding and why many hunters are unsure if there truly is a difference.  Jon explains how YouTube related information can be more of a problem in establishing true principles to property management and design.

If you haven't spent any time listening to Bronson Strickland about the research that himself and the rest of the Mississippi State University Deer Lab crew has completed, you're missing out. This episode is no different. Dan gets in to a great line of questioning about deer behavior. The guy discuss everything from how does choose buck to mate with, does a bucks aggression level impact his ability to breed if he is a smaller antlered and smaller bodied buck, and other general deer behavior questions.

The second half of the episode is dedicated predicting deer movement and behavior. Dan talks with Bronson about hunting apps that claim to predict deer movement and whether or not that data can be trusted. This is a very insightful episode the will leave you thinking about deer behavior and comparing it to experiences you have had while hunting. Enjoy!

We have a very exciting and much requested topic this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Returning guests Jonny Griffin and Josh Garroutte both join the show for a public land whitetail roundtable. John asks the questions, and Jonny and Josh answer from their unique and different perspectives. Jonny is more of the traditional treestand hunter, while Josh has been making a name for himself in the open country ground hunting game. So no matter how you choose to chase whitetails, we have an answer for you on this episode.

Topics covered include where to start hunting, how to use trail camera data, buck bedding and how it plays into your strategy, wind, and terrain just to name a few. Along the way all three gentlemen drop plenty of tips and tricks from using online maps to cheaper feed for your feeders. To end the discussion, Jonny and Josh both help John with some potential hunting strategies for his upcoming early season Nebraska velvet hunt. The boys truly cover it all in this episode!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan interviews the other half of Drury Outdoors, Terry Drury, about his life as an outdoorsman. Terry talks about growing up in small town Missouri small game hunting with a group of his friends. This eventually set the foundation for more hunting opportunities in the world of turkey and whitetails. Terry shares memories of his father and mother and even when he was a young man and how life today is much different than the "old days". The guys talk about Terry's family, his grandchildren, and the impact they have had on his life.

Terry also shares some fun stories from the early days of Drury Outdoors about how his brother Mark and himself used to get in heated arguments when things didn't go right while hunting. He explains his evolution as a hunter and how is very calculated and patient when making deer hunting strategy decisions.

I'll be honest, recording this episode was a blast and I would have to rank interview in the top 20 for sure. Enjoy!

Rethinking Bow Sights - Adjustable Red Dot

Gear

Bowhunters across the country have dusted off the bows to get dialed in for the upcoming archery season. Summer archery practice is a vital part of fall hunting success. If you’re like many bowhunters, there are parts of your gear you’re considering swapping out for one reason or another. One piece of gear Josh recently swapped out is his sight. The old peep and pin setup provided a cluttered sight picture, didn’t perform well in low light, and required a somewhat unnatural feel when aiming. Enter the Adjustable Red Dot sight.

The Adjustable Red Dot sight system provides faster target acquisition, easily adjusts for yardage, and eliminates the need for a peep altogether. For Josh, it’s just made shooting fun again! You have to see the difference to fully understand it. And once you shoot one, you’ll never want to go back. Check them out at www.adjustablereddot.com.

When this episode drops, there are only 71 days remaining before Pennsylvania's statewide archery season opens.  Season preparation is in full swing for many diehards and the anticipation is creeping up.  That also means the time of year is approaching when sportsmen and women are spending less time at home with family.  How do you handle the balance between your outdoor passion and family time?

On this week's episode we chat with Josh Raley, a fellow Sportsmen's Empire contributor for the Wisconsin Sportsman and How to Hunt Deer Podcasts.  Josh faces the same dilemma's as anyone. He is a husband, a father, and a faithful follower of the Lord, but also crazy about chasing whitetail deer and turkeys whenever humanly possible.  Josh shares with us some of his journey which led him to where he is now and how those learning experiences have molded him into the hunter, father, husband, and believer that he is today.  There is a lot left to be said from Josh, as he is no stranger to chasing whitetails across the country and we look forward to having him back for more deer hunting conversations!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jerry Rude about loosing a piece of hunting property forcing him to ask permission on new ground. He was happy with what he found. Jerry explains that just a couple months before the season started he lost a property that he had been hunting for several years. This led him to looking for property closer to home. What started as an e-scouting mission, led him to knock on a door of of a property that had some potential. He was surprised when the land owner told him "yes". Well, it was all too good to be true, that particular property was over run with pressure most months of the year.

This forced him to go back to the drawing board and once again he started digital scouting. He located a property that looked pretty good. After a couple weeks of trying to get a hold of the land owner, he finally got him on the phone and permission was granted. At first, the property didn't produce much action and Jerry was worried that he would have to start over. But, after a couple of trail camera card pulls and some sightings from the stand Jerry realized that he landed in the middle of a honey-hole.

Armed with a culinary background, she launched the handle @wild_and_foraged, sharing recipes and her adventures. They talk about a shared pastime of disc golf, attempting bottom round burnt ends, and making a seasonal berry sauce that will elevate any steak dinner. Be ready to up your summer game with this episode of Huntavore.

Rikki Folger is an accomplished chef who has worked in Napa, California and now in Colorado. While also being a Somalia, someone who is trained in wine tasting, she also creates whole dishes in the kitchen. Nick, however, skips over all that and dives into a shared recreational game between them, disc golf. Lots of parallels between disc and ball golf, but one area that disc has focused on, is playing among the established habitat. For Nick, his foraging game has greatly improved, because of bad throws into the woods. Rikki turns her attention to improving Nick’s attempt on venison burnt ends. Immediate issue was the marbling and fat contact of the bottom round. The smoking and keeping the moisture in was achieved, but the crust and char was not up to par. Rikki offered to increase the surface area when broiling. Now one of the best parts of summer are the seasonal fruits that ripe for the picking. Rikki takes an already beautiful piece of grilled venison steak and adds a berry sauce. She chose blueberry as a sweet and tart sauce that would elevate a simple steak into fine dining.

Mature mountain bucks in the northeast can be an extremely difficult quarry to encounter in the first place. But connecting on one with a stick bow inside 20 yards is a whole new level of difficulty!

Regardless of the type of vertical bow in hand, archery is a mental game. It's easy to develop bad habits that require practice schemes to break them. Cory shares with us that he has experienced target panic to such a degree, that during one particular season he hoped he would not see a shooter within range due to his lack of confidence behind the bow. Pauls’ shot on an Elk at 130 yards, put him into a drawing for a new bow, and the lucky SOB won! The music, festivities, and shooting were an awesome event for the whole family! Joining Marcus on the podcast this week is Clint Salisbury. Clint is the Regional Director in Michigan for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The guys kick things off talking about Clint's path that brought him to RMEF and why he always looked at this type of position as a dream job. From there, they spend the rest of the conversation discussing elk in Michigan. Clint gives a good history on the elk herd and how conservation work has been able to restore it to the healthiest that it has been in sometime, if not ever. Drawing an elk tag in Michigan is something most will never get to experience given that only roughly 300 tags are given out each year depending on herd numbers. However, in recent years, those hunters have posted an 80% success rate and with that a part of history in Michigan. Harvesting an elk in Michigan for most is a dream hunt and with the tireless work that volunteers are doing hopefully more get that chance to fulfill that dream.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast we chat with a fairly well known Pennsylvania Native, Cory Gulvas.  For those who do not know, Cory killed the number 2 typical whitetail with his recurve during the 2020 hunting season in Pennsylvania.  Cory is extremely humble and believes there was a lot of luck behind that success story.  However, we believe that luck is something that follows those who prepare well, and Cory is someone who spends countless hours preparing for the upcoming deer season.

We start part one of the conversation by breaking down the progression of Cory's interest in big woods whitetail hunting, going from a compound to a recurve, shed hunting, and his philosophy behind the pursuit of his quarry.  One big lesson to take away in his message, is that the hunt is not about the kill.  In fact, he said he does not overly enjoy killing animals although it is part of the hunt.  Rather, he cherishes the road you take to get there and would rather pursue a mature buck and come home empty handed than kill a younger buck just to fill a tag.  We also chat about calling deer in big woods, shed hunting, and a few other pieces of strategy.  It will leave you ready for more, so be ready for part two next week!

A personalized digital almanac that brings your desired hunting, gardening, fishing, and foraging information to a one stop platform. Want to add an out of state hunt, for a different species? Simply add the state and game animal and you get the sorted information you need, to take to the field.

Kris Chain also offers Season Report for $15 annually, and you can give it a try for free for 2 weeks

https://seasonreport.com/

Kris was able to harvest a bear last year, so Nick takes the opportunity to dive a bit deeper on bear meat. Its richness and moist texture makes bear meat a true eating experience. Kris describes the closest equivalent as a pork like texture, yet fully wild and it's own. Nick got very intrigued as if the bear boudin sausage could be a thing, Kris seemed very excited about the idea. Summer time also seems to be a great time to make a mess of tacos. Kris unpacks his venison or wild boar tacos. His go to is ground meat over shredded. Kris kept it straight forward by seasoning, and browning the meat, but finishes off by adding a ladle of stock to keep the meat moist and add a slight sausiness to the taco meat.

It can be so easy to be consumed by your passion in the outdoors.  Whether you're after a Pope and Young, going on a cross country turkey hunting tour, or logging hundreds of hours casting a line, it can become quite infectious.  But at the end of the day, why do we do what we do?  For one, our own self ambition can drive us to chase thrill and adventure.  However at the end of the day, there is much more to this passion than that.

This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Jarrod Renninger of the One Wish Foundation.  This is a true non-profit organization that takes children with life altering conditions on the outdoor adventure of their dreams.  Jarrod is someone who loves the pursuit of big game like many others.  However, he has found a passion for sharing with those who are less fortunate.  Join and listen as Jarrod shares how this all began, and where he envisions it to go in the future.  You'll hear some truly heartwarming stories that will leave you with a reality check in your own life and outdoor passion.  If you would like to contribute to the One Wish Foundation, or you know a family who should be considered, visit https://onewishfoundation.org/owf/.
