Early Season Hunting Tactics, Setups, and Strategy

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Steve Sherk (Sherk’s Guide Service) discuss hunting plans and setups for early season. Steve dives into his process and plans for the next several weeks before clients arrive. Jon explains his plans and when he anticipates having a shot at one of his target deer.  Jon explains fawn recruitment on his own property and how the habitat is expected to benefit his fall hunting.

Steve discusses the data he has collected over the past five years and what key weather factors he believes primarily impacts deer movement. Jon and Steve both discuss the number one external factor that impacts overall movement. Steve discusses how cold weather impacts deer at different times of the year, and how some weather fronts may reduce movement in the areas he hunts. Jon discusses what he has observed on private lands and what he believes negatively impacts deer movement.

Steve discusses the details of his early season plans, more specifically where he hunts and the habitat he prefers. Steve doesn’t have the traditional bed to feeding patterns, which creates a different strategy he believes advantages him in the big woods. Steve discusses the locations he believes provide the best hunting and bedding. Steve explains early vs late season bedding. Jon and Steve discuss the value of high-quality food and how this pertains to deer interest.

Steve explains more about his hit list deer and how he plans on targeting them. Steve details his mobile setup preferences vs fixed treestands. Steve explains how close he gets to bedding areas and why his tactics have changed over the past few years. Steve ends with detailing the significance of the sign he pays attention to and how that relates to deer movement and interest.

Have you ever asked yourself if your camo pattern really makes a difference? Or wondered how much hunting pressure is too much? This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast has been building all off season long. John is constantly learning about whitetails and their behavior, habits, and how they move about the landscape. This week, John teaches a crash course in everything he has been learning over the last several months, and how it can be used in hunting scenarios. He has read, listened, and watched countless hours of information from experts all across the country such as the MSU Deerlab and other biologists. The bulk of this episode is about science and research backed data outlining some of the most important things he has learned about how deer see, travel, and react to hunting pressure. John takes these lessons, and applies them to how it can help you be more successful this deer season.

After the deer behavior 201 course, John also throws out some good reminders for folks to keep in mind heading into the fall. Tips like not wasting your time chasing unkillable bucks or not getting hung up on summer trail camera photos. As fall quickly approaches the time has finally come! This is the last episode before Oklahomas bow season opens up, so what better time to talk deer hunting!

The Harsh Reality for EVERY BOWHUNTER

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

It's that time of year when all the stars begin to align, the weather is cooling down, and it's finally go-time.  You've waited all year long for this, and you're going to do everything in your power to spend the maximum amount of time in the field.  How many times do you tell yourself that this task or event can wait until after hunting season?  It's so easy to get caught up in the mindset that hunting season is priority because there is only a fixed amount of time you're able to hunt each calendar year.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into some personal dilemmas he is having balancing his everyday life and the desire to hunt hunt hunt!  The conversation is more open ended and philosophical then direct.  He shares with us his learning curve being a father and husband while also trying to chase his passion in the whitetail woods.  Mitch is open with everyone about how he really struggles keeping his priorities focused during the hunting season and not allowing himself to put his family and loved ones behind hunting.  Time management can be difficult in life, especially when you have other responsibilities that force you from doing the things you want to do.  Even though hunting has so many positive attributes, the harsh reality is it can become a selfish endeavor with ugly consequences if you're not careful.  If this is something you battle, hopefully this episode lets you know that you're not alone!  Good luck to everyone this fall!

Out of state trips for whitetails has soared in popularity over the last couple of years. More than ever, folks are heading to whitetail destination states in search of bigger bucks, better hunting, or just new experiences. But the entire process can be daunting! When out of state, you often have just a few days to learn the place, get on deer, and tag your buck. Because of this, many are held back simply by the fear of failure.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Brian Dombrowski of Wisconsin. Brian is a highly mobile public land hunter who’s had tremendous success of the last decade of making trips for velvet bucks. Brian shares his scouting strategy for short out of state hunts, how he chooses an area to target, how his standards are different when out of state, the gear he uses, and of course the story of his recent successful hunt that ended with a beautiful velvet buck. We have our first success story of the year this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast! Returning guest Chris Hammond (episode 74) joins us again on the show to talk about his early season Kentucky velvet buck. Chris was invited out to Kentucky by a fellow professional archer and was blessed to hunt a very lightly hunted and secluded farm. This episode timed out well with John recently returning from his own early season hunt, so the two were able to bounce new experiences off of each other.

Chris is a great story teller, but the story is only half the episode this week. John and Chris also talk about several lessons they learned from hunting new states with different terrain and circumstances. Chris talks about hunting corn early season, which is not something people talk about a lot. The guys also talk about using ozone out in the field, and the things they have learned from using it for several years now. Last but certainly not least, Chris and John talk about Oklahomas CWD rules, and how it makes out of state hunting a little more challenging now that you can no longer bring whole deer from other states back into Oklahoma. They also discuss a few Oklahoma CWD thoughts as well, so listen in and feel free to give your thoughts on the subject on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast social media pages.

In-Season Scouting Tactics for the Early Season w/ Aaron Hepler

The excitement is palpable as archery hunters are taking the woods all around the country. There’s nothing quite like those first few crisp fall mornings, sneaking in close to bedding, or watching deer vacuum up white oak acorns as they pack on weight before the rut. While the early season is full of excitement, it can also be extremely challenging. Changing food sources, shifting home ranges and increased hunting pressure can make it tough to pin down exactly where the deer are right now. This is where in-season scouting comes in.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler. Aaron is a public land hunter from PA, and spends a lot of his time hunting in a big woods setting. In season scouting is pivotal for Aaron’s strategy, and is crucial for getting on deer in the early season. Aaron shares his general approach to in-season scouting, what kind of sign he’s looking for, when to stop vs. when to keep going, and his thought process on a couple real-world scenarios. If you want to increase your in-season scouting effectiveness (and, I mean, who doesn’t?), this episode is for you!

We always talk about pretty analytical hunting tactics on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. After all, we live in the deep south. Overthinking is a pretty common theme for deer hunters who consistently shoot bucks on public land down here. This week, however, we're going to talk about our main strategy going into the Kentucky opener...HUNT DUMB. We've been hunting this place for about 5 years now and without a doubt the people that always kill bucks are the ones hunting 100 yards from the road in the corner of a soybean field. It's almost comical to come back to camp covered in mud, blood & sweat from your hunt to find someone else at camp standing over a big buck, looking like they haven't even shed a drop of sweat. In this episode, you'll hear us recap the trip and talk about our strategy going into the hunt, as well as some changeups we made that resulted in a couple of dead deer and a great way to kick off the 2022 season!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 138 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Mitch Shirk from the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast.  Mitch resides in southeastern PA where he mainly hunts private land but as we discussed in this podcast Mitch shares his strategy for hunting public land as well.  The two of us get into a bunch of topics when it comes to whitetail hunting. We dive into key factors that a property needs to have to help manage deer, his approach to his past few hunting seasons, getting outside his comfort zone and his story on his 170” buck that was on a 2 acre wooded lot.  We wrap up the conversation by discussing what hunting PA means to us and his Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast on the Sportsmen’s Empire.

To start things off in the podcast Mich briefly introduces who he is and we spend the first 15 minutes just having a fun bs session.  We then start talking a little bit about how running our podcasts have helped us over the last few years.  Mitch shares his thoughts on what a property needs to help manage deer.  For this aspect Mitch shares the importance of entry and exit routes.  We discuss the plans for the upcoming 2022 season here in PA.  This was a fun discussion because we both have full time jobs and shared how we plan on not blowing up our main areas when we can hunt if the wind doesn’t allow it.  I think a lot of people can relate to this aspect of the discussion.  Mitch shared his strategies for hunting a specific buck vs a general buck/deer. I asked Mitch how he goes about limiting his mistakes on his own property, his best of 2020 season in which he shot a 170” and the struggles of 2021.  Mitch shares the importance of gaining knowledge and intel by getting boots on the ground and getting outside his comfort zone.  Wrapping this episode up we chat about what hunting PA means to us.  Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! On this episode of Huntavore, Nick digitally sits down with Rick Casey, CEO of CHARD Products. Rick has a passion for wildgame, growing up in the U.P. of Michigan, Rick has fond memories of bringing in deer to the family garage and working together to create the amazing dishes of his yesteryears, like his grandma’s potato sausage. Rick also goes into how hunting and venison has impacted the design of his products, helping them be more effective for the hunter’s kitchen. If meat means more to you than just a fuel source, then this is your episode. Settle on in for a nostalgia filled episode of Huntavore.

Rick Casey is a problem solver. He sees products and notices changes that can be made to make them better. He has turned this trait into successful businesses. So when Rick had the chance to improve meat processing equipment, he fell back on his upbringing. Holidays in the U.P. , cutting venison with his family. What worked? What did he wish was changed back then? How could I improve the process of bringing wild game to my family’s table? Through this Rick has improved many of his CHARD Products.

https://linktr.ee/chardproducts

In our chat, Rick was so open about how much food means to him. Taking the time to not only sell a product hunters could use and be content with mediocre, Rick had to tinker and think about how he used poorly designed products before, and fix those quirks. Even if it was widen the legs to make it more stable, or using steel gears instead of plastic for a more robust build. These are changes that can help hunters step up their processing game. Ricks idea of making processing and cooking your wildgame is what he called closing the circle. So much effort is given preparing, executing, and finishing the hunt. Why stop there?

2022 Nebraska Hunt Breakdown

Big Game

Whitetail

John is back from his early season Nebraka whitetail hunt, and he is ready to break down what he learned this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. It was a quick trip over a long weekend full of car trouble, getting stopped by land owners, learning a heck of a lot about whitetails, and having a blast doing it all. Everyone has heard that whitetail deer are "creatures of edge" and over Labor Day weekend John really got to learn what that meant. The mixture of crop fields, CRP, and timbered creeks gave ample opportunity to see how deer use different terrain features and vegetation types to their advantage. John also learned that not all soybeans are created equal, or have the same appeal to deer.

One of the best surprises of the trip though, was how easy it ended up being to gain access to private land. It definitely helped having a local inside man to speak on John's behalf, but over all most of the people John interacted with were happy to help or at least give some knowledge. John left his house with 110 acres to hunt, and driving home he now has access to over 1,300 acres for future trips! So even though he came home with a giant pot of tag soup, the trip was far from a waste, and the knowledge he gained on this out of state trip will absolutely help him bag more bucks back on his home turf.

Conventional whitetail wisdom espouses a few basic tenets for early season hunting: find where the deer bed, find where they eat, and don’t hunt mornings. While hunting mornings in the early season is very different than, say, November 5th, early season morning hunts can still be very productive. In this episode, guest Mark Haslam shares the strategies he’s used to kill mature bucks in the morning during the early season four years running, including his most recent South Carolina velvet brute.

Mark Haslam is a deer hunter and land manager from Georgia who spends most of his hunting time in South Carolina. Mark runs southeastwhitetail.com, hosts the Southeast Whitetail podcast, and writes for Wired to Hunt on Meateater. He was also named the 2020 National Deer Association Deer Manager of the Year hunts and manages his family farm in South Carolina. Mark knows his stuff, and his tactics for early season hunting can be effective no matter where you hunt.

Rick has been with Vapor Trail for over 10 years and he shares a little bit about himself and their companies. Rick talks about his upcoming Boundary Waters hunt and all the details regarding what he will be going after and when!  We asked Ricke about his whitetail hunting situation for this upcoming season and it was really interesting to hear the way Rick hunts the metro Minnesota areas. Right after that Rick dives into two different Pope and Young buck stories! Then we wrap things up by talking about some whitetail calling strategies and experiences.

To start things off in the podcast Rick briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with Vapor Trail and Stokerized.  Vapor Trail has been extremely busy this past year not only with products but with building their own pro shop in Minnesota!  Rick shares some information regarding their shop and what people in the area can expect when they go there! From actually selling products, hanging out, 40 yard range and Techno Hunt! Rick follows this up by talking about his upcoming season which includes a 2 week canoe trip in the Boundary Waters!  This is where he drew a limited bear tag but plans to fish, hunt whitetails and birds!  Really interesting to hear how he plans on attacking this trip and makes you want to go for the ride!  Following this conversation up we dove right into his two Pope & Young whitetail buck stories.  Both stories happen during the middle of November and hearing how he was able to overcome a bad shot on the biggest buck yet to date.  To finish off the episode Rick shares how his improved calling techniques has led to him getting more deer encounters and what he is doing. Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

Travis explains annual and perennial plants that should be considered and how attractant they are to deer. Jon details some cover crop options that work well to attract deer while removing pressure off wildflowers. Travis explains the intense interest of deer in sunflower planted areas, and a trick he uses to reduce deer browse. Travis explains more on-site selection, where to start and ideal conditions to establish pollinator plantings. Travis identifies the time required to establish plantings and the related long term and short-term stance on plant selection. Travis explains the ideal times to establish plantings and consider competing plants, especially cool season grasses. Travis details the minimum equipment he uses and how he has shied away from expensive tools like a no till drill. September is here, which means deer season has arrived!  That includes the special regulations season in Pennsylvania including units 5C, 5D, and 2B.  It's a fantastic opportunity to get in the deer woods slightly before the rest of the state.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chatted with someone who has found repeated success on opening day during this early season.

Our guest Adam Pastrnak discusses his continued stewardship of the whitetail woods.  More of a self taught bow hunter, he is constantly consuming as much information as possible to help formulate a game plan during fall.  Through the school of hard knocks and trial and error, Adam has managed to come up with a system where he can connect on deer in the morning during early season.  We indulge into his learning curve and how he has evolved from stomping through brush to a more methodical approach in the whitetail woods.  It's a bow hunting conversation for anyone who is ready for opening day, wherever that may be!
