Pennsylvania Woodsman

Black Bear Knowledge with the State Biologist

Bear
Conservation
Strategy

Black bears are one of the most intriguing animals in North America due to their high level of intellect.  Across the nation the most popular way of bear hunting is by baiting or with hounds.  There are a number of states that do not allow these forms of bear hunting, resulting in the ultimate chess match between man and beast.  In Western states, however; the landscape and topography allow for spot and stalk situations as well as long range shooting.  Arguably the most difficult place in the country to harvest a black bear is Pennsylvania and the surrounding Northeastern states which do not allow baiting or hounds.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Robby and Mitchell chat with Pennsylvania Black Bear biologist Emily Carrollo.  As Pennsylvania's bear seasons continue to modify based on data and research, Emily shares some of the data management associated with making hunting season decisions.  In addition to addressing public concern, we dive into food and cover habits typically associated in fall and how the age and sex of a bear may influence its home range.  This episode is not only informative about the species but has plenty of hunting strategy ques to pull from.

I owe each and every one of you a huge "THANK YOU" for taking time out of your day to listen to the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast. This is the 700th episode and I can't believe how far we have take this experiment. What started off as a dude in a closet who just wanted to talk about hunting to now hundreds of fellow hunters, wildlife experts, and hunting personalities providing a mix of education and entertainment, I simply didn't imagine it would have ever gone this far. Huge shout to those who have helped me along the way, my wife and kids being the inspiration behind all of it.

On this 700th episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is joined by fellow deer hunter and mental health expert Kevin Martone. Kevin and I talk about everything from how to deal with negative energy and how that can affect not only your mental health but the positivity of those around you. We discuss the stress of being a man and the benefit of not only "toughing out " the stress in your life, but how to find an outlet for that stress when it become too much of a burden. Honestly, I used this episode as a bit of a therapy session and use my life as an example in the line of questioning.

Excellent episode and I hope you enjoy!

On today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Steve Sherk is on as the guest. Steve guides deer hunters in the vast national forest land of Pennsylvania and gathers annual observational data from a huge multitude of trail cameras in addition to visual sightings from boots on the ground scouting year round and hunts in the fall. Steve and Garrett finally met in person for the first time recently at a Spartan Forge retreat. With summer right around the corner, Garrett asks Steve about scouting and trail camera tactics specific to the summer months. Steve doesn't have agriculture around in the areas he hunts, but the deer do have other summer food sources which are heavy draws in the summer months leading up into the early fall. They discuss those food sources, where and how to place cameras for inventory, how far a buck might shift from summer to fall, whether or not to dive into the bedding areas and fall hunt locations, how Steve sets up his cameras and whether he does any protection for ants or bears, how often to check cameras, observational sits, and what to do if you get a single picture of a new big buck and want to take the next steps to honing in your search and learning more about his patterns going into the fall.

How to Hunt Deer

Choosing the Right Tree Stand

Strategy
Gear
Whitetail
Bowhunting

Most whitetail hunters today, especially archery hunters, hunt from a tree stand of some sort. The days of nailing 2x4s to a tree and calling it good are behind us as deer hunters have rightly become a more safety conscious bunch. There are a ton of commercially available options today, but they aren’t all created equal. When choosing a tree stand, a little research and thought goes a long way toward making sure you’re happy with whatever purchase you make. The last thing you need is to find out on opening day that you hate your stand or you chose the wrong kind for your style of hunting. Tree stands are like shoes, you’ve got to pick the one that fits, is comfortable for you, and that’s built for the scenario for which you’ll be using it.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh gives a rundown of the various types of tree stands. Each type of stand has strengths and drawbacks, and there is no one stand that’s perfect for everyone. Josh covers some of the things that should inform your decision when choosing the stand that’s right for you. And here’s a little spoiler: you shouldn’t make your decision based on a hunting personality’s preferred style or brand, nor should you base your decision on a company’s marketing. When it comes to tree stands, the decision isn’t black and white. There’s a ton of gray area. This episode will help you navigate the decision of what stand is right for you.

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by new friend and guide Les Standstipher. Les and his son Keaton own and operate S&S Guide Service in the Lake Eufaula area, as well as fish the Crappie Masters National Trail. A unique aspect to this week's episode, is that John and his wife Mackenzie got to fish with Les prior to them recording this episode. So instead of just asking questions over the phone, Les got to teach John first hand. Now that John has a better grasp on the subject, his questions can be much more targeted and educational for the listeners.

Les brings all his knowledge from fishing tournaments and guiding to the table this week as he and John deep dive into the crappie fishing water. They cover Les's complete rod and reel setups for both guiding and tournaments, his crappie specific boat, and all the ins and outs of finding crappie. The two talk about water temperature, depth, and clarity and how the fish react to each. Les gives an explanation of livescope technology and how he uses it, as well as how it has completely changed how people fish for crappie. On this episode of The nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Brandon Adams about being the first and only person to ever kill Oklahoma’s 5 big game species in a single season.

Brandon was raised in the small town of Prague in central Oklahoma, where he could be found juggling farm responsibilities, playing sports in school, and hunting. Introduced into hunting by his father, Homer Adams, at an early age he honed his hunting skills by trial, error, and shooting competitive archery. Since his first deer at age 10, Brandon has harvested mature bucks and big game animals across the country. He is the first recorded hunter to tag all five big game species in his home state of Oklahoma, accomplishing this feat in one fall season, all on camera and all with archery equipment.

Being in the hunting industry since 2006 has taught Brandon many things about the art of filming outdoor adventures. His favorite part of the whole process is putting the hunts together and telling a story in post production. Along with having over 10 years of field production experience, he's also been producing and editing outdoor television shows since 2010 including Buckventures & Major League Bowhunter.

He married his wife, Brianne, in the spring of 2009, and have two beautiful daughters, Addison Rae and Brooke Kaylynn.

It’s hard to beat a beautiful spring morning in the Wisconsin Driftless! The turkeys are gobbling, the fish are biting, and the morels are popping! But even the most beautiful weather days in picturesque terrain can be a grind.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles of Good Chance Fly Fishing about their recent romp through Wisconsin’s Driftless area. While they were hoping to get a couple of longbeards on the ground, a sack full of morels, and sore arms from fighting fish, the day didn’t go exactly as planned. There was not a morel in sight and the gobblers were simply not interested in playing the game. But Josh and Pierce still had a blast and found redemption as they closed the day hauling in hungry Browns on a stereotypical Driftless cow pasture stream.

Jeremy Critchfield is the co-host of the Sportsman’s Channel Show MTN TOP Outdoors, and a wildgame chef.  With a lifetime of experience, Jeremy has made it his business to bring wildgame out of the shadows of being gamey, and into the true light of being real, wholesome, delicious food.  HuntChef even went to the lengths of trademarking #eatwhatyoukill.  Nick and Jeremy unpack that idea on how we as sportsmen have a 2 fold approach.  First is to show the public that we are here for food and meat as much as or even more than the killshot.  Second would be to ourselves.  We have a responsibility to get the most from our harvest, give thanks for the animal, and to share with others why we go to such lengths and why it's our personal passion to take our meat supply from the woods.

Jeremy gives us a challenge to take our turkey breast meat to the next level.  He suggests that by sheeting out a breast, using a sharp knife to butterfly out that piece of white meat, and add a stuffing of your choosing.  Roll the sheet back up and cook under a slow even heat.  Slice the meat cross the roll and serve a “pinwheel” looking serving of delicous whitemeat and stuffing.  Its called a roulade but Jeremy says its not difficult to prepare this crowd pleaser.  Jeremy has also put his expertise into a whole line of seasonings and rubs.  Check it out at: huntchef.com

Hunting elk east of the Mississippi River is arguably one of the greatest conservation success stories in North America.  While the herds seen today in Pennsylvania are actually Rocky Mountain Elk transferred from western states, it's still a thrill to see and hear this species roam the state.  On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch and Robby chat with Jacob Coons about his recent elk hunting trip to the Keystone State.

Jacob is driven to the challenge of hard-earned DIY hunting for western game but is also allured by the unique hunting opportunity for elk in eastern states.  He drew a late season bull tag for the 2021-2022 season and was fortunate to connect with the trophy of a lifetime.  Jacob shares with us all of his homework to prepare for this tag and what he learned throughout the entire experience.  You will likely learn something about elk hunting PA you never knew, as Jacob's attention to detail is superb!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down a hunting scenario with a listener who found single buck bed while scouting public land. The guys get in to an in-depth strategy discussion about how todays guest plans on hunting this bed. They talk about everything from what wind direction this buck feels most comfortable in, the terrain surrounding this bed, and how we think running water may impact the thermals in this area.

In this strategy session they also break down the food sources, where to set up an ambush point in his bed to feed pattern, and how to access that ambush point. They also iron out the details about the best time of year to put this plan in to motion and if he feels he will have a higher success rate on a morning or evening hunt. Again, this is an excellent episode where every detail is discussed in hopes of getting a shot on a mature whitetail buck.

Wisconsin Turkey Double

Turkey
Strategy

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett talks about his recent weekend trip to hunt public land in WI in which he shot two birds on back to back mornings. For the first bird, terrain layout and tree type played a massive role in the setup, because the bird appeared to be roosting in a place where his most likely travel after fly-down was likely to be in one specific direction. The second bird required a bit more trial and error to try and locate and roost, but the set up was driven more by prior experience hunting that area than it was strictly looking at the map. Garrett also talks about the opportunities for over-the-counter late season tags in WI and choosing between smaller areas with higher turkey populations versus larger areas with lower turkey densities.

For many, the question “How do I go about buying hunting land?” is a daily occurrence. Most outdoorsmen and women dream of owning their own little piece of paradise to hunt, fish, and enjoy the great outdoors. But what if you’ve purchased land, and the dream isn’t so dreamy anymore? What if the commute has become too much? What if the property taxes are just more than you want to pay? What if you want to upsize or just find an all around better property? How should you approach selling your land?

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh is joined by Al Wisnefski of Land & Legacy Group about selling land. Al has been selling property for almost a decade, and he has helped many landowners through the difficult decision to sell their property. While not everyone is looking to sell their land right now, this episode is a great conversation for all those interested in rural real estate. Al shares his entire process from beginning to end. If you’re looking to sell, Al lays out all the things you need to consider as you bring your land to market. In this podcast Kenny Kane (Generations Forestry) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the blending of forest management practices and wildlife improvement. Both small and large properties landowners are challenged with managing their properties and balancing optimized deer habitat with sustainable timber management. In this podcast Kenny and Jon breakdown how to process these topics and the contemplated areas we need to assess to get the best prescription possible. Issues related to high graded forest are discussed as many landowners experience the pitfalls with mismanaged timber from the past. Kenny explains the best techniques when you are dealing with cleaning up and restoring areas that are high graded.

Kenny’s process of evaluating forested areas from understanding the concerns to making decisions will help landowners feel empowered to think ahead and begin to build a superb deer hunting property. Jon and Kenny provide rules of thumb and techniques to make informed decisions as landowners undergo the transformation of building their hunting property and deciding what trees to cut or leave. Kenny explains the impacts certain landowners may experience when markets for certain timber are not in demand. Jon provides a recommendation of what to do next when you are trying to understand market demands.

Kenny explains how to balance quality and poor timber situations and how to look toward the future. Jon explains his techniques for timber stand improvement. Kenny provides a major takeaway on how to invest in your property and what species we sometimes overlook when we are thinking about wildlife. Kenny and Jon discuss the benefits of improvement and the short and long term thinking that can get landowners in a better position for the future.

Removing Predators for Better Turkey and Deer Hunting

Turkey
Predator Hunting
Trapping

As we reach the halfway point of spring turkey season there are generally two separate conversations that emerge.  Either the success of a textbook turkey hunt, or a tangent about turkey populations being off.  If you find yourself in the latter half, pay attention!  This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Mike Dreibelbis about his journey into trapping nest raiders and fawn nabbers.  Mike found his passion for trapping later in his hunting career and began to hone his craft of targeting coyotes and nuisance predators.

Fur prices continue to fluctuate and the days of making money on a trap line are nearly over.  As the quality of habitat increases across the country for better deer and turkey hunting, naturally predator species will respond in a positive way.  Unless you're a diehard trapper yourself, it's possible that the increase in predators has an impact on the turkey (or deer) hunting in your neighborhood.  Mike's journey of learning to master this art is filled with a ton of knowledge that you may be able to apply in your area.  Hopefully this will fire you up to run a trapline this fall for future hunting, or consider inviting a trapper to come and help you out!

In this podcast Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the significance of chestnut trees and their benefit to wildlife. Tim details the history and science of chestnuts and how the landscape has changed as a result of the blight.  Previously, chestnuts provided an economic and wildlife benefit that is important to our country and is now missed with the current whitetail deer herd. The value of the chestnut tree is something we have sometimes forgotten and can be a game changer on the landscape. Listen to the podcast to further understand the benefits and how this tree can benefit your deer herd.

Jon discusses his secrets to designing a property with chestnut trees in mind. Tim discusses the benefits of chestnuts versus acorns; the answer may surprise you!  Jon asks Tim about planting non-native chestnuts and the impact on the landscape. Both contributors discuss the type of chestnuts (native, non-native, hybrid and transgenic) and the benefits of each and how certain organizations are working toward supporting a transgenic tree on the landscape.  Jon discusses simple options to planting and how he approaches chestnuts and deer.

Tim discusses the best options going forward for those wanting to plant chestnut trees on their property, specifically the American chestnut. Tim and Jon break down the key factors for choosing chestnuts, and how to manage them on the landscape. Other important information and specifics as it relates to preferred soil type, environments and what not to do with chestnuts is explained in the podcast.
