The Transition from Snow Geese to Turkeys

Big Game
Bowhunting
Conservation

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks to Holt Watson, an avid outdoorsman that loves chasing snow geese from the Great Lakes down to the waterfowl Mecca known as Arkansas.

Holt grew up in the St. Croix river Valley fishing for walleyes on the St. Croix river as well as various lakes in MN and WI. His passion for things like chasing whitetail and ducks quickly grew and he eventually started guiding snow goose hunts in Arkansas and has done so for the past 10 years. Holt just finished his snow goose season and is looking forward to the impending turkey season to kick off. When Holt isn’t chasing waterfowl his day job picks back up as a heavy equipment operator. He is currently engaged and has wisely set the date of the wedding for June (no hunting seasons). Dan gives Holt an opportunity to turn him into a die hard turkey hunter. Let’s see how it goes!

Oklahoma Outdoors - Shed dogs, Controlled Burns, and Everything Outdoors

Big Game
Coon Hunting
Dogs

This weeks episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is one of the more random ones, but its because this weeks guest is such an avid outdoorsmen that we had to cover a little bit of it all. Bransen Shelton of Three Rivers Outdoors is a man of many parts. He enjoys bird hunting with his dogs, shed hunting, deer hunting, trapping, photography, and his most recent venture of coon hunting. It was just to hard to pick one topic so John and Bransen just touched on all of them.

The two kicked it off with some shed hunting talk, and Bransen talks about how much he has learned about deer and their travel behavior after getting more into shed hunting with his dogs. He also says it is easier to train a dog to shed hunt than most people believe. The guys also discuss Johns recent burn at his property, and Bransens upcoming burn on his own property and the prep that goes into it. Bransen also tells the story of his nice 160" class whitetail he took off his own 50 acre place and the improvements he is making in order to make it a yearly thing. Bear hunting and the Oklahoma quail population are a couple more of the random discussions covered in this episode, and to hear the rest of them you're just going to have to listen to this episode!

Pennsylvania Woodsman

Micro-Managing Small Hunting Farms

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

How many of you can relate to hunting small tracts of property? What about a micro-parcel of 10 acres of less? The vast majority of deer hunters with access to private land can relate to this type of parcel, especially those that are chopped up in the Northeast. While a Whitetail deer’s home range is significantly larger than the confinement of a micro-parcel, there is more that can be done in the off-season to improve the quality of hunting then most would think. However, in addition to hard work, it takes a more methodical approach, and sometimes outside-of-the-box creativity to achieve these goals.

This week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we have Phil Holcombe share his experiences from the school of hard knocks. Phil is a Pennsylvania native that is no stranger to hunting vast chunks of big woods public land as well as his own property of less than 10 acres. We begin by understanding a little bit about his property and how he evaluates the qualities and setbacks of a micro-tract. Phil explains how it’s important to “work with the grain” rather than against it – meaning take the qualities of the property and use them to your advantage. The core of his principles mirror strategy on public land, but reducing the scale accordingly. He also shares the importance of strategic stand location and access to allow the perception of zero hunting pressure. There must be a balance of attraction and “huntability” – all the attraction in the world will not yield the results desired if the local herd is spooked every time you step foot on the property. Whether you have a small property, or you’re pounding public ground, anyone can take away strategy from this episode!

Sooner or later, every deer hunter wants to find a way to share the experiences they have in the field with others. No Room For Jealousy In Turkey Hunting

Big Game

Whitetail

We've got a heck of a turkey conversation this week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast! Adam Crews takes some time to share with us the story of his public land gobbler from opening weekend in the Florida swamps, and Matt Reaves shares his opening week successful father/son hunt in Alabama. They guys discuss some in depth tactics that went into the success.

As the episode closes, the crew gives a challenge to turkey hunters everywhere. Stop being jealous! There's no room for that in turkey hunting whatsoever. Sure, we can be competitive. It's a driving factor for men to enjoy the challenge. However, jealousy will kill your hunt and leave you in a bad state of mind. Go out and just enjoy the hunt. It's not about pulling the trigger and never should be, so take advantage of the opportunity that God has given you to enjoy creation up close.

While icing down his balls, Dan was looking at all of the deer he has killed over the years. He talks about trends he noticed as to where there deer were spending most of their time during that pre-rut timeframe, and that just because it's November doesn't mean that it's the run. Dan feels that many apply rut hunting tactics during the pre-rut period and that may result in additional pressure to the deer population. This is a really good episode, especially if you ware interested in getting a vasectomy.

When a guy stops by your booth at a trade show and asks if you like big buck stories, you have to assume he has a few. That's exactly what happened with Andrew Mack a few weeks ago, and he did not disappoint. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John and Andrew have a good ol fashion storytelling conversation. Andrew starts things off with a western Oklahoma spot and stalk rifle hunt from 2021 where he calls in a nice heavy horned buck.

John and Andrew jump down a few rabbit holes between stories also. Andrew talks about calling deer and how he feels you almost can't over call. They talk about how Kansas genetics got into southeast Oklahoma deer. They also talk about one of Oklahomas controlled traditional archery hunts, and how it is even more challenging that it appears. Within that discussion they get into buck to doe ratios and the list goes on. All in all this is an episode that has a little bit for everyone.

Cameron goes through most of the things the average person needs to know when they are thinking about building an AR. From things like barrels, barrel lengths, triggers, uppers, lowers, handguards, stocks; you name it and Cameron talks about it. After discussing AR builds, Cameron and the guys get into suppressors. We discuss things like the stigma suppressors have had over time, the benefits of them, and the process of how to purchase a suppressor. Today's show is packed full of great information. In this episode, Jon Teater of Whitetail Landscapes discusses with Steve Sherk of Sherk’s Guide Service the process of finding big buck sheds. Jon discusses his recent shed find folly. Steve and Jon discuss how to hunt sheds, versus just find sheds, especially in the big woods.

Shed hunting can be just as rewarding for some hunters and targeting a specific buck and their sheds can lead to excellent data for the following year. Steve discusses mistakes that shed hunters make and Jon identifies specific habitat features that support winter preferences to help attract deer to the areas we can hunt. Jon explains how a client has gone from no sheds to over a dozen based on the strategies that he employs on his property.

Steve discusses timing of antler casting and how the winter can dictate a good or bad shed season. Jon explains why deer drop their antlers. Unexpectedly, Steve explains that tough winters lead to better shed hunting. Listen in to all the shed tips and tricks Steve and Jon use to be successful. Steve and Jon end with a future saga and give insight into upcoming podcasts where Steve will be breaking down his target deer for next year.

Anatomy Eats with Dr Jonathan Reisman

Big Game
Cooking
Whitetail

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick contacted Dr. Jonathan Reisman, an ER doctor, physicians writer, and author of the recent book, The Unseen Body. Jon shares his unique perspective on the connection between food and anatomy that began on the first day of medical school, in a cadaver lab. Together Nick and Jon talk about the inspection of animals in a kosher slaughterhouse, why are lungs illegal to sell and serve in the US, Jon’s Anatomy Eats dinners where he makes connections from what's on the plate to the living organ inside ourselves, and how Nick and Jon share a questionable practice at acquiring protein. To unpack all this, stay tuned to this episode of Huntavore.

Nick happened to switch over to public radio on his way home one evening where he came across an interview with Jonathan Reisman, a physician who is also the author of the recent book, The Unseen Body. In addition, Jonathan during his first year in medical school, became interested in food through his anatomy courses. In fact he had a professor that would make correlations between specific muscles of human anatomy that would match specific cuts butchered from an animal. His studies lead Jonathan on a search to discover dishes made of organs and parts of the body that function to keep us alive. In his search, one method other than visiting slaughterhouses was to take up hunting himself. Like a lot of people who didn't grow up around hunting, he had a steep learning curve to become successful. He also shared that he would pick up roadkill for his other hobbies or bow making and tanning hides, and happened across a very fresh kill and seized the opportunity to harvest some meat (I tip my buzzard hat to you, sir). Nick was interested in Jonathan’s time in the Kosher slaughterhouse with the shochets or essentially the Jewish meat inspectors that qualify meat to be “clean”. One of their processes was to inspect the lungs for scars from pneumonia. This inspection opens up some practices we as hunters can take, as we are field dressing, using that opportunity to not only be the first to witness the opening of a wild animal, but to even examine the health and life of the animal by inspecting the organs.

How Micheal Perry Uses Maps to Scout for Deer

Big Game

Public Land

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Alabama big buck killing machine Michael Perry. Michael has had great success killing above average deer on heavily pressured public land in unforgiving terrain. Just last season he was fortunate enough to connect on the current Alabama muzzleloader record, a 195 6/8” bruiser. To what does Michael owe his success? Scouting, scouting, and scouting.

Michael’s approach to using maps to scout for whitetails is quite different than many others today. Rather than starting with a map and picking likely whitetail hotspots, Michael picks hard to reach sections of his favorite public spots and puts boots on the ground. Once he finds promising sign, then the maps come out as he begins to ask, Why is that deer here? While this may sound more like an old school approach to using mapping apps, Michael’s success shows it can hold its own as a tried and true method.

He's got a goal of hitting the 300 mile mark this season, and at the time this episode drops, he's already pretty close to if not over 100. Instead of spending large amounts of time on ultra vast landscapes, Rendell Erik casts a net over dozens of smaller properties to keep tabs on. In this podcast, we discuss what he looks for, how he stays efficient, how he qualifies a public property that's worth coming back to, and how he's thinking about the overall fall plan during the process. The episode starts off with recent intel gathered on a river bottom property; however, specific examples are given in multiple terrain types along with how successful hunts and observations relate to learning the land in the off season.

Declining turkey populations across much of the U.S. have caused many to sound the alarm. Thankfully, turkey populations in the state of Wisconsin are still very strong. But how can we keep them that way? Is there anything we can do now to avoid seeing the decline other states have experienced?

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Dr. Grant Woods of Growing Deer about the causes of turkey population decline and how land managers can help right the ship. Grant is a biologist with decades of experience managing land to create healthy habitat for deer, turkeys, and other critters. Grant’s southern Missouri property, dubbed the Proving Grounds, had very few turkeys on it when he purchased it. Today, the place is an absolute turkey Mecca. Intensive habitat management and predator population control have played a huge role in Grant’s success.

During the conversation, Josh and Grant discuss predator population control, forestry practices, modern farming practices, and all sorts of other things that impact turkey populations and specifically poult survival. If you’re passionate about wild turkeys and want to see them thrive, then tune into this episode for a little Turkey Management 101 with Dr. Grant Woods.

Fly Fishing for Mountain Stream Native Trout

Big Game

Whitetail

With spring approaching we have new ways of shaking cabin fever out! This week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with John Kolb. John is the founder of the Suffering Outdoors YouTube channel which showcases outdoor adventures in the Northeast, especially around his home in northern Pennsylvania. Even though John is a diehard whitetail hunter and can often be found wandering in large tracts of public land, he still enjoys spending this time of year fly fishing.

Opening day of trout season in Pennsylvania is nearly a state holiday itself with thousands of anglers lining the recently stocked creek edges. However, the length of streams stocked is a fraction to the 80,000+ miles of streams throughout the Keystone State. There is more opportunity to catch native trout then most would think. John enjoys the challenge of tying his own flies and casting his fly rod into pools that are sometimes smaller than a half ton pickup truck. Everything about this type of fishing is a challenge – sometimes hiking long distances, wary fish, narrow windows to maneuver a fly rod, and John adds an additional element with a camera! Make sure you tune into some of John’s fly-fishing videos that you will find informational and entertaining. While you are at it, you just might find yourself scrolling through the reels of deer hunting videos.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with K.C. Smith about how K.C. uses maps to scout for deer in the more open terrain west of the Mississippi. Map scouting can be a challenge in more open regions. As K.C. explains in this episode, areas often provide better cover and forage than what it appears to provide on the map. This means relating boots-on-the-ground scouting to map scouting is extremely vital.

K.C. is often working with unfamiliar territory and limited time. This means he needs to maximize his use of maps to find deer fast. Using Nebraska as a case study, K.C. breaks down his map scouting process from conception to kill. The guys also cover lots of other topics like finding quality food sources, picking the right glassing point, and how deer relate to terrain in more open territory. Thanks for choosing to listen to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. These days, it seems that hunters can not see eye to eye on just about anything. Turkey hunters may be the worst when it comes to arguing about the method of hunting wild turkeys. One guy shoots his TSS loads at 50, while another guy thinks that if the bird doesn't come in to 20 yards then the bird won. You've got people who think decoys are cheating, and others who wouldn't step foot into the woods without one. The arguments are endless. This week we're chatting with Zach Lucas about some of these methods and discussing our outlook on what method is the "right" method. You'll learn quickly that we don't believe there's a right or wrong answer. Zach goes through some of these methods and recaps hunts where he's used each of them to kill the gobbler he was hunting. We're there to kill the bird!

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with long range shooting enthusiast and Gunwerks salesman, Pake Taylor. Pake and Dan discuss all aspects of long range shooting systems.

Pake grew up in eastern Washington on a cattle ranch that gave him the ability to spend a solid chunk of his time outdoors. He started chasing birds and small game the moment his folks kicked him loose with his first BB gun, and the obsession has only grown expennationaly from there! On a regular year Pake will chase animals ranging in sizes from doves up to elk and everything else in between them from northern Washington to Wyoming where he lives. Where there's smoke there is a fire and his fire is deeply rooted into long range shooting and it only seems to grow with every confirmed hit. Gunwerks says they teach some to shoot out well past 1,000 yards but, most importantly that style of shooting leads to making a shot at 800 yards a slam dunk. Pake states, "Joining one of the various shooting leagues (PRS or NRL) is an awesome way to get time beyond a gun in unstable shooting positions while under stress. The best part is that it's an absolute blast to be a part of!" Gunwerks is strongly hunting oriented but has multiple options for crossover rifles for competition rifles and ELR rifles. They have a passion for providing the best materials for their fans and customers to continuously push the envelope for the modern day hunter and shooter!

Whitetail Landscapes

How to Design Your Forest for Deer

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In this podcast Tim Russell from Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services discusses how to attack and design your forest for deer. Understanding and recognizing the state of our forests and how to approach a forest stand with various tactics allows for an opportunity to meet our goals. One of those goals is increasing a variety of plants providing more forage for deer. Understanding the tree species that survive well in shade, intermediate shade or full sunlight explain much about the site and how trees have coevolved. Considering and establishing strategies to allow certain tree species to dominate our landscape through management and manipulation may allow for more vegetation for wildlife. Also, consider the resources on the landscapes based on the tree species, layout, and the features juxtaposed create options for those designing their hunting properties. As trees reach maturity and eventual die-off, which rarely happens nowadays, few gaps in the canopy occur and considering disturbances on the landscape are paramount to changing management units to allow for improvement in habitat for various species.

Jon Teater, Whitetail Landscapes, and Tim consider the status of the landscape across many properties and what tactics they are using afield to promote both even (one distinct tree age class) and uneven aged stands (several tree age classes) on the properties they are working with. Both contributors discuss how to avoid mistakes of cutting certain trees hurting your landscape and creating more options to maximize value on the property. Evaluating the trees, volume and quality, and recognizing that landowners should do something to achieve goals. The contributors consider the most popular options for forest stands: don’t do anything, forest stand improvement, temporary opening, regeneration cuttings.

Tim and Jon discuss specific examples and techniques for working with oak and aspen stands. How to coppice trees and example layouts that allow landowners the option to help wildlife flourish on the landscape. Tim and Jon evaluate various prescriptions that lead landowners down the path of finding success and in some cases making money all at the same time. Both contributors suggest that keeping the forest stand in a state of production, controlling invasive species, and thinking about how to balance long and short-term financial returns will be a weighted decision on the landowner. The podcast ends with a good example of how to take a prescription and apply it to ensure that you can rehabilitate the property for wildlife, particularly for deer.

Trad Bows & Underused Turkey Cuts with Emrah Oruc

Big Game
Cooking
Turkey

On this Episode of Huntavore, Nick spontaneously calls up Emrah O of Bowhunting Soul Podcast to chat about trad bows, chasing turkeys, and how to get as much usage out of your harvested bird. Nick has strung up his long bow after a good long while and wanted to get some tuning tips. Trying to not blow our brains with information, Emrah gives some places to start, like brace height, and getting a correct spined arrow. Nick wanted to move into turkey dishes that utilizes underused cuts of the bird, and how plucking your whole bird can help. Emrah adds even more ideas outside of just meat, but using parts in your equipment to chase the next bird. If you want to get the most of your turkey this year, than tune into this episode of Huntavore

Emrah Oruc is the host and creator of Bowhunting Soul. A podcast and youtube channel dedicated to the soul of archery, using traditional equipment. So starting out this episode, Nick quickly jumps into talking about traditional archery. Running an archery unit for his 3rd and 4th graders using compound bows, kids have had their first bite of the archery bug, slinging some arrows. As a bit of a show and tell, Nick strung up his long bow and sent a few shots down range. Emrah reminds everyone that with traditional equipment, as you get more basic, you begin inputting more and more of the archer behind the bow. Not to say that its all trial and error, but my zero’d in setup could be way off for Emrah.

Nick transitioned into talking turkey. With Wild Turkey seasons opening up soon, hunters are eagerly awaiting the next species to chase. Emrah explains his reasoning for going mobile and using a ghillie suit instead of a popup blind. Going light and fast does increase your chances of getting spotted. Emrah explains that he has gone 0/3 on birds, but with each attempt he got closer and closer to putting the pieces together. Nick is making a bold prediction that Emrah connects on a bird this year.

Now onto using your harvested bird. Emrah talks about actually making fletchings for arrows from the flight feathers, and creating a bone call for your slate from the wing bones. Even if you don't have a plan yet for your bird, Nick does talk about upping your ROI by plucking your bird instead of skinning. The skin can better protect the flesh in the freezer, and what little fat the bird has is under the skin, a natural flavor and moisture improvement. Braising and stewing wings and salvaged necks create amazing stock. Nick took the opportunity to make french onion soup from wings and necks. Overall easily done without much effort. For the drums and thighs, Nick also used his sous vide wand in great application. Adding ⅛ cup of oil or butter, some herbs, salt and pepper and a thigh to a bag and letting it cook at 155F for 36 hours (yes, 36 hours) delivers an amazing tender meat, with all the beautiful turkey flavor, without the dryness folks experience. A quick broil in the oven to brown the skin and serve either whole or shredded. That's another way to capture the beautiful dark meat from your bird.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Plant Diversity and Hunt Strategy w/ Steve Chilcote

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we conclude the second half of our interview with Land and Timber Consultant, Steve Chilcote. In part one, Steve shares his background of forestry and land consulting which leads into topics of browse, cover, and invasive species management. In part two, Steve concludes his thoughts on a few more invasive species he typically finds on properties and the necessary measures to correct them. As plant communities transition with removal of invasives, Steve stresses that there needs to be quality plants that fill in the newly created space – otherwise invasives will reinhabit. Typically, the native seed bank has stored seeds for decades that only needed sunlight and reduced competition to flourish.

In some cases, adding conifer trees for improved cover or screening is possible for landscapes that lack this habitat feature. Steve breaks down the how, what, and where of conifer adding and management on some client properties. Lastly, Steve concludes with hunting tips and strategy for private landowners looking to shoot for the stars and harvest the most mature deer in the neighborhood. All the practices and techniques discussed throughout part one and two of this interview are conservation oriented at the core – it’s an added bonus when they allow better hunting opportunity!

Bad Luck & Strategy Change Leads To A Booner

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jim LaRose of New York about how the tides of bad luck shifted in his favor when shot a 170" whitetail buck. Jim kicks off the episode by breaking down the terrain of the properties he hunts and how he has seen the overall deer population decrease over the last several years. This has led to Jim making a strategy change with him moving his treestands off of the field edges and deeper in to the blocks of timber where the deer bed.

Before the 2021 started Jim had 3 bucks on his hit list that he was going to chase. On opening day one of the bucks was hit by a car, and a couple weeks later he let an arrow go on a buck that that they called in a dog tracker to help recover, but they never did. Feeling down and out, he let the rest of the archery season slip away. But, on opening day of the firearm season he connected on a giant buck that he had 3 years of history... with a pistol!

Excellent episode, enjoy!

How Greg Litzinger Uses Maps to Scout for Deer

Big Game
Public Land
Whitetail

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, I catch up with Greg Litzinger to hear what he keys in on when map scouting for deer in the big woods and salt marshes of New Jersey. Greg, aka the Bowhunting Fiend, hunts highly pressured public land in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. All the competition means Greg needs every edge he can get to seal the deal on big bucks. Map scouting is one of the tools Greg uses to get himself away from the hunting pressure and on the deer.

While map scouting is a common tool for big buck killers, everyone has a little different technique and approach depending on their hunting style and the terrain they hunt. For Greg, map scouting is a year round endeavor. During the hunting season, the map serves as a starting point for Greg. He’ll then use it to scout his way in and set up and hunt over freshest sign. In this episode, Greg shares how he uses maps to find the kinds of properties he’s looking for, the specific features that he keys in on, what would make him write a property off, and his top advice to help the average hunter kill more deer.

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with Mark Olis from Moultrie Mobile about their cellular trail cameras. Mark talks about the history of the Moultrie brand, how the founder of Moultrie Trail Cameras came up with the trail camera idea at a bear camp over a bait pile, and the functionality of the Moultrie Mobile app. Another great episode from a brand that has been a cornerstone of the hunting industry.
