What We Like & Dislike From Alabama's New Turkey Regs

Turkey

Big Game

On this week's episode of Southern Ground Hunting, a few of us had a chat about turkey season being just around the corner. As the season approaches, we've been brushing up on our understanding of the new regulations that will be in affect this season in Alabama. We're joined by our friend Devin Duncan of Virginia for this episode. While Devin isn't an Alabama resident, he has spent some time turkey hunting here. In fact, in the 2020 season he was able to kill 4 public land gobblers in 5 1/2 days of hunting. Even in his success, he had some self reflection to do as he says "I just felt kind of guilty for killing that many turkeys". We thought he would be a great voice on the topic as a non-resident, and we even squeeze a few tactics out of him. Parker gets to chime in on the public land resident perspective, while Luke carries the private land resident side of the conversation.

Ice Fishing Essentials with Sean McVeigh

Big Game
Fishing
Conservation

On today's podcast we have a little change of pace. One of my friends, Sean McVeigh recently took up ice fishing, which has been something I've done now for a couple decades. Being so new and not really being sure of all the ins and outs, Sean and I had talked quite a bit about how to get started. This included defining what the bare necessities are and what the pros and cons are for various levels of equipment. Ice fishing is another one of those things where it seems like you can spend as much or as little as you want, but there are definitely certain areas you don't want to skimp out on. We recorded this episode in the hopes that anyone else new to ice fishing might have a resource to look into and be able to help guide their decision making process for choosing rods, augers, line, reels, shelters, and electronics.

Turkey

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks hunting buddies Zach Hopper and Sam Maedke all about turkey hunting. Dan shares that he thinks turkey hunting is overrated as Zach and Sam share about their obsessions and successes during turkey season.

Zach has been hunting and fishing since he was 5 years old. Now at 23 he works as the head of marketing for Buck Gardner Calls and is obsessed with waterfowl and turkey hunting. He has a bachelors degree in marketing from Ole Miss and lives in north Mississippi. Zach started waterfowl hunting over 10 years ago and it quickly became his passion. Over the last 10 years he has traveled more and more and hunting new places but still loves to hunt his duck lease in the Mississippi Delta.

Sam is not only a multi-time state champion duck and goose caller, he is also Dan’s cousin and played a huge role in Dan getting into the sport. Sam lives in Two Rivers WI where he is part of N.E.W. Outdoors. Sam is currently helping revamp the goose call line at Buck Gardner Calls where he and Dan both serve as Expert Staff Members. Sam spends his free time scouting or getting his friends and family out into the field.

Scott talks about his hunts so far, as well as what he has up ahead. We discuss Paul’s inability to use a mouth call, Andrew’s ability to make noise but it sounds nothing like a turkey, and Scott’s amazing ability to whisper sweet nothings to gobblers across the country.

Paul and Andrew are deep in the throws of life. Paul took the “purple coat Mafia” out for a little adventure over the weekend, while Andrew worked to clean up the yard. Comment periods for the upcoming rules changes are open in Ohio, and the new fishing regulation book is out for 2022-2023.

Missouri Woods & Water - Coyote Series - Hunting With Lights With The Night Crew

Big Game
Predator Hunting
Public Land

For the second week of our coyote series, the Missouri Woods & Water podcast has Chris Robinson with the Night Crew on to talk about hunting coyotes utilizing lights.

First, Chris gets into how he got into hunting coyotes and the history of their show and the evolution of the different light types they have used has gone. The Night Crew is very successful using white lights hunting, but Chris talks about how that isn't necessarily what might be best for each hunter and how it really depends on what light color gives each individual hunter the best view of the coyote more than it is what is told to them. He gives great pointers on how to use lights as sort of a curtain for the shooters so the dogs can't see what is going on behind the light. We also talk about how lights are a great tool to use in conjunction with thermals and it's not really an "either or" type of thing. And, as always, we go down a few rabbit holes like Chris' favorite rifle calibers, rounds, etc. This is another great episode showing new night hunters another option that is certainly more affordable than thermals. Thanks for listening!

How to Build Hunting Access on Your Property

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In this podcast Todd Shippee from Empire Land Management and Jon Teater from Whitetail Landscapes explore some of the best hunting access techniques for land managers. Todd discusses what he has been working on at his client’s properties. Todd dives into some provisional strategies for hunting access. Sometimes the best hunting hack can be a temporary consideration of planting various plants to see how deer react before going full bore into implementation. Jon suggests thinking about these decisions over time and thoroughly evaluating your options.

The contributor’s breakdown flat, hilly and mountainous terrain differences as it relates to access. Jon breaks down how he uses saddles for hunting access and key techniques to eliminate deer interest in certain terrain settings. Todd discusses how deer may feel too confined when we develop trails, and this can put deer off from traveling down locations we prefer. Both discuss how some techniques can create more predator opportunities. Todd explains some very simple and effective tips to get in and out of the treestands that allow for more hunting success.

Both contributors’ breakdown key plants that support hunting access, and how to create layering across the property. Todd and Jon talk about how to get deer closer to their treestands while considering access. Jon explains buffering zones and how certain plants allow him to create effective access. Todd and Jon provide more permanent established practices (i.e. berms, ditches) to help support hunting access. A new concept like introducing berms or other features may create more usable, huntable space across the landscape. Todd ends with some very key access tips, and both contributors explain a hunting hack that you can use on your property and at remote hunting camps in the big woods

Wisconsin Sportsman - How to Build Your Turkey Hunting Playbook with Scott Ellis

Big Game

Turkey

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with turkey calling extraordinaire and four time Grand National Calling Champion Scott Ellis about building a turkey hunting playbook. Each hunt and each gobbler is different, so it’s important to have a bank of plays to run no matter the scenario. The deeper your playbook is, the greater your chances of being successful on stubborn longbeards. Scott and Josh discuss a few ways to help you build out your playbook and fill more turkey tags this spring.

Scott is a turkey calling champion, author, and host of Hunt Quest. He’s also an accomplished hunter. Cutting his teeth hunting Osceolas in Florida, Scott travels each year chasing Toms across the country and has completed two single season Grand Slams and two Royal Slams.

In this episode, Scott mentions that he wants to be remembered as the guy who shared his knowledge of turkey hunting with the masses and help others be more successful. Toward that end, Scott has produced lots of tools to help you become a better turkey caller including his DVDs, Mouth Call Magic 1 & 2, and his app, Turkey Tech which is available in the App Store and Google Play. The turkey tech app features how-to videos featuring Scott using both friction and mouth calls, live turkey recordings, and a recording feature that allows you to record your own calling and compare that to the calls of wild turkeys.

With one buck in the freezer and another tag in his pocket, Dwayne began searching for a larger buck to help his teams standing in the Bowhunting League competition. With his teammates both getting nice bucks of their own, Dwayne had the most room for an upgrade. Food Plot Overload

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On last week’s episode, we began to prep everyone about the reality of food plotting challenges in 2022. The herbicides we typically use may be in short supply and expensive, and fertilizer won’t be much different. Mitch mentioned that planting a summer cover crop as a “green manure,” which will release nutrients mined by plant roots to the soil’s surface when terminated, as being a viable option. This is not a new concept to agriculture, but it’s begun to gain more traction in the food plot community. With that, this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman is going to branch off into a bit more detail about green manure in food plots with Tad Dalgewicz.

Tad is a spokesman for the Whitetail Institute and does seminars throughout the east coast. He has an intensive background in agriculture, and between his part time farming and food plotting history has nearly 30 years of experience. He discusses a new product released by the Whitetail Institute called “Revive” and how this product along with a green manure planting system can be utilized. Tad is one of those guys that when you chat with him, it’s plain to see he has intense passion for food plots and managing soils in a sustainable way. Tad is no stranger to relating his food plotting to quality hunting, and has taken numerous wall-hangers in Pennsylvania. With that passion, be prepared for Tad to go on some tangents about food plotting, property management, hunting strategy and more! You may find some of the information in this episode to be a little over your head if you are new to food plots. But rest assured that the information from Tad’s mind is quality mixed with quantity!

How Zach Ferenbaugh Uses Maps To Scout For Deer

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

On this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public about map scouting for whitetails. Map scouting has become an indispensable tool for serious whitetail hunters. Mapping apps allow you to dissect aerial and topo imagery to locate potential bedding areas, feeding areas, and travel routes the deer prefer. Until you actually put boots on the ground, it’s all just an educated guess. But being an effective map scouter can make you far more efficient when off season scouting or when actively hunting.

Every year, Zach and the rest of the THP crew travel the country chasing deer, turkeys, and other game in new and unique places. Their intense travel schedule means that they rely heavily on map scouting both in and out of season. It also means they have gotten really good at recognizing those terrain and habitat features that deer tend to gravitate to, no matter the region they’re hunting. In this episode, Zach shares some of the things that are consistent when it comes to map scouting no matter where he hunts. The next few episodes of the How to Hunt Deer podcast will explore map scouting different terrain types in greater detail, and how you might approach map scouting a little different depending on where you hunt.

On this episode of the Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Colorado mule deer fanatic Joel Crisman. Joel is a self taught western hunter that is passionate about chasing monster mule deer in Eastern Colorado. Dan and Joel talk about strategies for finding, stalking and

Joel’s outdoor journey started in Iowa fishing for catfish and hunting small game and birds as a kid. After graduating HS he left Iowa to go to college at the University of Southern California on a football scholarship which then led him to play in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Joel has always had a fascination with hunting the West for elk and mule deer, but it wasn’t until he moved to Colorado in 2001 that he started chasing his hunting dreams. “Colorado has just about everything that a person could wish for”. He immediately started hunting elk, waterfowl and upland birds. In 2002 he got his first pointing lab named CJ and his first bow. He started hunting the eastern plains of Colorado for mule deer. Joel had 20 seasons of failures and near misses. After learning from his mistakes and investing in better equipment he has now connected with a number of very large mule deer. “After a number of years I honed my skills. I learned how to glass, judge size, stalk etc. I have killed a number of large mule deer. Now I will pick 1 or 2 bucks a year that I chase with my bow”. Joel is also a part time deer/antelope guide for his buddy Jim Hubbard at Eastern Colorado Outdoors. Besides chasing mule deer he also archery hunts for elk, bear and antelope in Colorado.

In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Jeff Pritzl about what can be learned from harvest statistics and hunter trends from the 2021-2022 whitetail deer hunting season. Jeff is the Deer Program Specialist for the State of Wisconsin. Each year, the DNR puts out reports based on harvest data and randomized hunter surveys. The DNR is currently compiling this information for release in March. Early indications point to good harvest numbers despite a slower opening weekend, low numbers of hunting accidents, and some interesting trends regarding hunters’ harvest decisions.

Overall, the last three years have been atypical for Wisconsin deer hunting. While there may be some conclusions to be drawn from the data, it’s simply too early to suggest meaningful trends based on the last three seasons. In this episode, Josh and Jeff discuss what can be learned from the data, how the state gauges hunter experience, and how YOU can get involved at the local level with County Deer Advisory Councils.

Whitetail

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by The Intrepid Eater, Adam Berkelmans. Adam is a self taught cook who has a passion for wildgame, growing and foraging, and making amazing dishes out of both. Together, these guys chat about some deep topics related to self-sustainability, responsible meat-eating, and finish up on a fun way to serve wild game, in sushi rolls. All this and more on the next episode of Huntavore.

Adam Berkelmans hails from Ontario, Canada. He took his passion of hunting, fishing, and foraging and mixed it with love of cooking. Taking on the title of Intrepid Eater, Adam shares that with a little creativity, some self taught practice, and an adventurous spirit, wild game can be just about any dish that you desire.

Adam leads the discussion on an idea of responsible meat-eating. The thought is, if you only eat the most desirable cuts without the rest of the animal, then the waste and discarded parts would surpass what is taken. Head to tail eating of animals, not only provides a wealth of nutrients, but also stretches the use of that animal. Both Nick and Adam agree that if we are going to spread this idea, it has to be done by sharing recipes, encouraging others to try new things, wagging a finger and telling someone to keep their livers without first creating motivation would be not good.

On a lighter note, Nick asks about wildgame sushi. Adam has made several variations of what closely resembles Kimbap (Gimbap) , a Korean version of sushi, but with cooked and pickled items, rather than raw, in traditional sushi. The Crappie and Chips rolls he made was to stretch the use of one fish. Being notorious for not freezing well, Adam didn’t want to freeze the fish, but fried in a tempaura batter, followed up with fried potatoes and rolled it all in sticky medium grain rice and sushi seaweed paper. No special equipment is needed. Adam does have a bamboo sushi roll pad, but Nick plans to use a placemat. Use your inner McGyver to achieve the task. Want something else? Nick and Adam brainstorm that ground can be used as long as it’s cooked first as a burger patty, and slow braised meat can be placed in a line that holds itself together.

Sushi in itself is a full course in meal prep and presentation. All the elements are cut and sliced, raw ingredients cooked or pickled, and assembled so everything is square and can be sliced. Not the most efficient method, but for bringing some fun to the party, wildgame sushi is the perfect party meal. You can find Adam on Instagram @the.intrepid.eater or his website; intrepideater.com.

Cody started guiding with his dad on their family ranch when he was just 12 years old. He was quickly immersed into the world of giant whitetails, guiding axis deer hunts and encountering exotic big game animals. When Cody isn’t guiding for a 20,000 acre operation in Sonora Texas his day to day work consists of running an exotic animal and cattle outfit and maintaining a ranch in Harper. He made a name for himself as the youngest pro staffer for Texas Trophy Hunters Association and has competed in several ASA shoots. He has also become a well known TikTok personality with his bright pearl snap shirts, mustache that rivals Burt Reynolds’ and long flowing locks of hair. This is an awesome BS session for anyone that is interested in Texas and the hunting opportunities that the “Don’t Mess With” state has to offer.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Food Plot Prep with Herbicides, Fertilizer, and Clover Management

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

With warmer temperatures approaching, cabin fever is beginning to wear off. Spring will be here before we know it, and too often food plot planters stall to prepare for planting and maintaining their fields. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch shares detailed information for clover plot management, as well as weed control and fertility concerns everyone may face in 2022. To start, proper clover plot establishment and management is not always well addressed. Due to this, many spring planted clover plots fail due to the lack of context. Soils need to be properly prepared with no established weeds, and most importantly, need to be planted earlier than most would think. In addition, knowing what herbicide you can use on clover and the appropriate times is equally as important for maintaining longevity in established plots. Prepare for note taking!

The forecast of glyphosate herbicide availability in spring is uncertain, and the supply that is available may be significantly more expensive than normal. These challenges may lead to alternative measures. Mitch dives into his plans for how he will address last year’s fall planted plots with significantly less, or no glyphosate applied, and also without using tillage. This will require biological controls that choke out weed competition. Finally, Mitch scratches the surface on how fertility can be built overtime with little to no commercial fertilizer, as 2022 will prove to have abnormally high fertilizer prices. Plan now, and success will come in fall!

Southern Ground - Mountain Food Plots, Topography & Mature Buck Behavior with David Miller

Big Game
Turkey
Whitetail

This week on Southern Ground Hunting we're talking with David Miller of West Virginia. We don't get the opportunity to talk about land management too often. Public land hunting really doesn't give a hunter the opportunity to do much in terms of land management. However, this week we're changing it up and covering David Miller's strategies for whitetail land management in mountain country.

The southeast is scattered with hills and hollers, with parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North & South Carolina having legitimate mountains. One thing that landowners in these areas continuously talk about is the lack of ability to really cultivate those properties to grow giant whitetails. Whether it's bad soil, lack of sunlight, or just difficult to get planting equipment in there, there's a lot of reasons for this. This results in lack of nutrients and creates very nomadic deer movement. You may get mature bucks passing through, but they're going to be on the move. David tells us about the things he does to ensure that a buck has everything they need year round to live on his properties, and it's easier than you might think!

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett discusses six benefits of spring scouting but also six pitfalls of spring scouting. It's never a bad idea to get out in the woods and cover some ground in early spring before the woods green up. But there is a risk to putting too much stock into certain aspects of what you learn. In years past, Garrett had chosen to hunt areas almost entirely off of intel gained in the off-season, which can be fine during certain times of the year, but could be wasting time in others without paying attention to additional contextual clues.

You're probably on at least one form of social media. Instagram, Facebook, and now Tic Tok receive our attention at least one time of day. Whether you're waiting on a flight to take off, taking a dump, or ignoring your kids, many of us take to scrolling to see what's going on in the world. As hunters and outdoorsmen we often follow some of favorite content providers, influencers, TV Shows, and hunting brands to check out their latest hunting trips, new shows, or new products they're launching. But, have you ever noticed what they're not posting? I'll follow that up with a another question.

How often do you see any content about conservation efforts or who to contact about anti-hunting legislation? From my experience, very minimal. In today's world just buying your tags isn't enough anymore. We ALL need to advocate for hunting and the outdoors, especially those with the biggest platforms and have the most "skin in the game". In my opinion this is should be mandatory. There are a lot of people out there working hard, I mean really hard, to protect the natural resource and the right we have to hunt them. Helping spread that message, could go a really long way.

This week is an important topic for all outdoor enthusiast in Ohio. Andrew was able to sit down and talk with Dr. Timothy McDermott of The Ohio State University, to discuss ticks in Ohio. Over the past couple decades, the number of species of ticks has increased to the current day known number of 5. Just a few years ago it was 1, then 2, and now 5! Each carries slightly different attributes, disease, and issues for outdoorsmen and women, as well as live stock, wildlife, and more.

Paul just got home from his week long trip to Nashville for the National Wild Turkey Federation conference. He recaps some of his favorite parts of the experience including the calling competitions, trade show, and more. While Paul was deep in the turkey life, Andrew continues to try and figure out how to use a mouth call, and patiently waits to get to the woods for some whitetail shed hunting. Next Level Mature Buck Hunting

Big Game
Bowhunting
Whitetail

In this episode, Jon Teater discusses with Steve Sherk of Sherk’s Guide Service how to break down a mature buck from start to finish. Steve has developed hunting tactics that work year in and out for him and his clients. Historical trail camera data and sticking with a deer through the years, and understanding his preferences ensures success down the road. Other topics such as how deer acclimate to changes, socially or otherwise, in their environments is critical to knowing where they will reside throughout the year and getting ahead of them during hunting season.

Developing a plan to harvest a mature deer is only as good as your ability to locate them, collect data and thoroughly evaluate their movements. Jon and Steve talk about summer and fall ranges, and how there are misnomers, especially when a hunting property is designed correctly. Of course, deer may change their movements and their general patterns at any time, so it's vital to evaluate a deer’s physical needs throughout the year.

Steve’s process and concept of clustering cameras and knowing a big buck’s behavior as they shift movement from early fall to breeding periods allows him to build a database of information that supports his hunting approach and ability to target mature deer. Steve is focused on big woods movement, but the strategies as discussed will apply to most locations. Steve explains that it is important to not get discouraged and hunters' agenda to hunt should be linked to when deer are consistently using areas. Further, understanding the whys behind deer movement is crucial. Steve ends with some great suggestions on how to break down a mature buck’s area and how he killed a giant Pennsylvania buck during the rut.

Wild Turkey Conservation with Dave Owens

Big Game

Conservation

In this week’s episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project about wild turkey conservation. Dave Owens is an avid turkey hunter known for his YouTube channel The Pinhoti Project, which documents his turkey hunts from Maine to Hawaii. While known for targeting longboards, often on public land, Dave has become a leading voice for wild turkey conservation.

For a time, wild turkey populations across the country were a massive success story of modern conservation practices. Unfortunately, many states have seen a decline in wild turkey populations over the last two decades. Before state agencies and hunters can begin to address declining populations, there are many questions that must be answered with sound research. Dave has used his platform to raise both awareness and funds for vital wild turkey research projects.

While many wild turkey research projects are currently in progress and many more are just getting off the ground, there are many things that the average Joe or Jane can do to help wild turkey populations in the short term. In this episode, Josh and Dave discuss the importance of holding ourselves and state agencies accountable, the responsibility turkey hunters have to advocate for wild turkeys and the places they all home, and how a mindset shift is necessary if the next generation is to enjoy the same opportunities to chase wild turkeys that we have today.

Are Your Deer Starving to Death?

Big Game

Whitetail

On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch has a conversation with Kip Adams. Kip is a biologist and the Chief Conservation Officer for the National Deer Association (NDA). Prior to Kip’s engagement with the Quality Deer Management Association and NDA, he was the deer project leader for New Hampshire Fish & Game Department. New Hampshire, as well as many other states in the northern portion of the whitetail deer’s home range, is not immune to severe winter weather having an impact on the local herd. Kip was involved in numerous surveys in New Hampshire monitoring winter areas as well as mortality.

In addition to the wealth of knowledge regarding whitetail biology, Kip is a Pennsylvania native who finds himself hunting property he manages in northern Pennsylvania. He can relate to the weather patterns in the Keystone state and how they may impact winter survival. Kip explains that providing winter food for deer is not a reactionary process – it takes planning ahead to manage plant communities accessible to the deer herd this time of year. However, as many landowners begin to hit the panic button during these harsh conditions, they will find themselves making the mistake of piling food. Commonly, corn piles and hay bales get places near wintering yards, and while this is intended to be a positive deed, it can result in disease, predation, and higher rates of mortality. Take notes, as this episode will have us back in the biology classroom!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan goes on a rant about hunting becoming a rich mans sport and his thoughts on post season scouting. "One this I have noticed in my area of the state is that as land owners get older and eventually pass away their children decide to sell the property, especially if it is a property with any agriculture on it and the family who it was passed down to have decided to not follow in the family footsteps. This opens the door up for someone who is not "local" to come in and purchase the land, then cash rent the farming, and either lease up the hunting rights or they themself hunt, and leads to displacement of local hunters, thus leading to less hunters. Just thinking outloud."

Then Dan breaks down what is is looking for when he heads out to the woods for his post season scouting sessions. Stem count on vegetation, floating trails, looking for old sign and if it is important, along with several other observations that play a huge role when scouting.

Buying land can be one of the most involved and complicated endeavors we go through as individuals and can be taxing and liberating all at the same time. In this discussion we get into the pitfalls and benefits of owning land. Anthony breakdowns what he’s doing on his land to improve it and his number one improvement he believes most should consider after purchasing property. Anthony is focused on maximizing his land and receiving a benefit hunting wise via logging. Anthony has taken it on himself to mark timber and layout a logging plan to include some enhancements that will increase deer interest over time.

If you are considering buying land or are fortunate to hunt on family property this episode discusses the thoughts, attitudes, and the concessions we sometimes must make in order to find a balance between meeting goals and keeping healthy relationships with family and friends. It’s important to be realistic and find success in our own ways and don’t forget that goals can be set but may need to be rethought in order to be achieved. Anthony and Jon discuss family and bringing children up with hunting and how they are approaching things differently from how they were taught.

Further, Anthony and Jon discuss working with neighbors; this include strategies you may consider that could help push your agenda in the locality. Understanding that we sometimes might deal with highly pressured ground, especially during gun season, can be a major detractor, but we must work through these frustrations and be keen on when the time is right to go after the deer we want to harvest. Anthony advocates that looking for other properties and evaluating areas that may be more aligned with your goals. Selling land may be a consideration for some, but Anthony is playing the long game on his properties and he hopes that his current and future improvements will help him meet his goals.

Something's Fishy

Big Game
Cooking
Fishing

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by the Editor in Chief of Harvesting Nature, Justin Townsend. Justin lived down in the keys and had his fair share of cooking and eating saltwater fish. Now he resides in Colorado and has to tune his craft to fresh water. Nick asks about fishcakes, fish dips, and is there anything we can do with freshwater roe? To finish out, Nick and Justin brainstorm a smoked salmon “Dockside” pie. Get ready for some fish talk on this episode of Huntavore.

Justin Townsend recently moved to his new home in Colorado. While not bringing a large amount of game meat in this year, he has been exploring and putting the pieces of the puzzle together on his new hunting territories. Coming from the Keys, Justin has a huge knowledge base when it comes to fish. Nick struck gold on the ice and was able to haul in a 26.5” northern pike. With all the excitement, Nick wanted to pick Justin’s brain on some possibilities for the fish. The guys touch on the idea of fish cakes. It’s not a fancy nor even exciting dish, but could offer a good way to use a filet that got a bit mangled due to novice pike butchery. Blitz the pike, egg as binder, mixed in with bread crumb and whatever herb and spice, popped into the oven, air fryer, or oil will make what was dodgy into delicious. The next topic was freshwater roe. Opening up the belly of my pike, I saw a large amount of roe. Knowing the energy that goes into producing eggs from poultry, it only seemed fitting to try and use the effort this fish put into making eggs into something delicious. Justin does warn about some of the dangers from parasites in freshwater fish, but also gives a great article about curing roe:

To round out the episode, Nick has an idea for a smoked salmon shepherd’s pie. However shepherd didn't seem right so it has been re-named dockside pie. Nick found some salmon filets in his freezer that needed to get used. Smoked salmon in itself is amazing, but making the meat candy into a dish sounds terrific. Keeping the filling simple, chopped onion, spinach, and salmon. Binding it all with a mild cheese sauce, and topping it with savory sweet potatoes makes a great wintertime belly filling meal.
